Cool opening for area farmers markets By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Spring may have sprung but it was hard to tell last Saturday morning as Goochland’s farmers markets opened for business. A brisk wind and cool temperatures held down turnout of both vendors and customers at the Goochland Farmers
Market at Goochland Courthouse. Market manager Moe Marchetti, who runs Breeze Hill Farm, said he didn’t bring any produce from his place. “We’re not ready,” he said, noting that this spring has been one of the coolest in years. Vendor Charlotte Johnson was firmly bundled up in a warm blanket as she displayed her tomato and pepper bed-
ding plants. “It’s our very first day,” said Johnson, a semi-tired pharmacist from Amelia who set up her booth with husband Tim. Asked where their cool weather crops were, Charlotte replied, “The dog ate my cabbage.” For photos from My Manakin Market in Centerville see page 6.
School buses bound for Randolph Elementary School were re-routed to Goochland Elementary School on the morning of May 1 after a report of a person with a firearm within a mile of Randolph was received. Randolph was put on lockdown, said Assistant Superintendent of Schools Peter M. Gretz. Goochland Sheriff T. James Agnew said his office received a call at 7:34 a.m. from the school system reporting a person dressed in camouflage carrying a rifle walking on Cardwell Road heading toward Route 6. “The schools did the right thing,” said Agnew, who said no one was located in the vicinity matching the description.
Agnew noted that it is spring gobbler season and that turkey hunters typically pursue their prey in the early morning hours. The Sheriff ’s Office notified the schools that it was safe to resume normal operations at 8:05 a.m. said Agnew. In a letter distributed to parents later in the day, Goochland School Superintendent James F. Lane said a cafeteria worker and two teachers noticed the man near the school and notified the school office. “While we did not feel students were in any kind of imminent danger, we did feel there was enough concern posed by this individual to increase the level of security of the school until the incident was investigated,” wrote Lane. Lane said later in the week he was happy with the collaboration with the Sheriff ’s Office and said most feedback from parents in the handling of the event had been positive.
