Goochland BOS approves Centerville McDonald’s store By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

The golden arches that mark a McDonald’s restaurant will soon be seen in Goochland now that the Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a store at Broadview Shopping Center in Centerville Village. Discussion centered mostly on the hours of operation and whether the business should be required to put up $10,000 that would be used for a possible traffic light at the intersection of Broad Street Road and St. Matthews Lane. Applicant Clay Grogan asked that the Planning Commission’s recommendation that hours be limited to

5 a.m. to 12 p.m. be reconsidered to allow the store to operate 24 hours a day if need be. “We would like to have this flexibility,” he said, while adding that customer demand would determine the actual store hours. “We’ve heard a lot of concerns about what we are trying to do,” said Grogan in his presentation to the Board. “And we have addressed many of those concerns,” he said. Grogan said bright colors had been toned down, a stone exterior similar to the nearby Food Lion would be used, an altered roof line and other measures had been adopted in response to concerns. see McDonald’s > page 3

McDonald’s will build a fast food restaurant at the corner of St. Matthews Road and Broad Street Road in Centerville, directly in front of the newly opened Goodwill Store.Goochland’s supervisors approved a conditional use permit for the project at its meeting last week.

A former chairman of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors will run as a Democrat for the 65th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in the Nov. 5 election. William E. Quarles Jr. said Sunday he will oppose Republican R. Lee Ware Jr. for the seat Ware has held since 1998. The 65th District includes all of Powhatan County and parts of Chesterfield, Fluvanna and Goochland counties. “You need to infuse your locality with new

views,” Quarles said on Monday. Quarles said Ware was out of touch on several issues, including women’s rights, healthcare, the environment and education. “Mr. Ware may feel entitled to this seat. But as much as he would have us believe otherwise, this isn’t his seat. It’s the people’s, and they deserve better,” Quarles said at a recent campaign stop. Quarles served two four-year terms on the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, serving as chairman for three years, including 2010 and 2011. He lost a re-election bid for a third term to Republican challenger Manuel Alvarez Jr. in 2011. Quarles made no secret of his interest in higher office, saying during his last campaign for supervisor that if he won it would be his last term on the board. Quarles grew up in Louisa and Goochland see Quarles > page 3
