Surigao del Norte is a province in

the Philippines located in the Caraga region

of Mindanao. Its capital is Surigao City.

The province consists of two major islands

Siargao and Bucas Grande in the Philippine Sea, and a small region at the northernmost tip of the island of Mindanao. This mainland portion borders Agusan del Norte, and Surigao del Sur to the south.

Surigao del Norte is the second northernmost of the Mindanao provinces and is an important transportation hub between Visayas and Mindanao. Numerous ferries cross the Surigao Stait between Surigao and the island ofLeyte carrying vehicles and passengers between Liloan in Southern Leyte and Surigao City.

LET’S GO TO FESTIVAL & EVENTS Siargao Invitational Game Fishing Tournament (Held every May 6-10- Renowned anglers from all over the world converge to join the biggest ever game-fishing in the country. This game-fishing tournament is the first ever in Mindanao.)

Siargao International Women’s Surfing Cup (Held every May 11-14- Women surfers all over the world gather to compete in this International event. Big cash prizes are at stake for the winners.)

Bonok-Bonok (This is a ritual dance which originated from the Mamanwas, the early settlers of Surigao.)

Surigao City is also known as “The City of Island Adventures” Surigao is the Surfing Capital of the Philippines Surigao del Norte was once a part of an old territory that existed in Northeastern Mindanao called ‘’Caraga’’ named after the people called ‘’ Calagans’’ who were believed to be of Visayan origin. They were the inhabitants of the province that time.

GETTING THERE

BY AIR: There are daily flights from Manila to Surigao City,the capital of the province.

BY LAND: There are several buses around Surigao City (Surigao del Norte) from Butuan,Davao,Liloan (Southern Leyte), and Manila via RORO.

By Sea: There is a pier two kilometers south of the plaza that serves ferry and RORO boats from Manila, Cebu, and Liloan (Leyte).

Siargao Island contains the largest mangrove forest reserves in Mindanao, at Del Carmen.[citation needed] Long stretches of wetlands indicate a potential for commercial seaweed ..propagation.

Is an island in the province of SurigaoThe island is contiguous with the municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte. Its area is 128 square kilometres (49 sq mi).

The island of Leyte is to its west, across Surigao Strait, and Mindanao is to its south. Its main island, Dinagat, is about 60 kilometres. (37 mi) from north to south.

MEET THE PEOPLE OF SURIGAO DEL NORTE MAMANWA TRIBE Immerse yourself in Surigao del Norte’s culture by meeting the Mamanwa tribe, one of the first settlers in Surigao. The Mamanwas live in Mat-i Tagbasingan, which is only 15 minutes away from the city.

This tribe is known for their Bonok-Bonok dance, which Drew experienced firsthand when the Mamanwas welcomed him in Surigao. The best time to visit is on September so you can participate in the Bonok-Bonok Festival. Street dances, floats, food, and inter-barangay competitions are some of the highlights of the event.

THE RHUM OF SURIGAO DEL NORTE Gigaquit rum, named after the town Guigaquit, is Surigao del Norte’s local alcohol made from nipa.

ENJOY THE WATERS! Did you know that the fourth largest lake in the Philippines is in Surigao del Norte?

Mainit Lake is more than 17,000 hectares and it spans the areas of the towns of Mainit and Algeria. If you want to catch a glimpse of the lake, you can rent a van for P2,500 to P3,500. Meanwhile, jeepney fares range from P8 to P10. You can also ride the habal-habal for a more localized experience.
