Sky’s the Limit for Gonzaga Football By: Dela Adedze ‘17 Contributor Everyone doubted them. Opinions from reporters, local coaches, sports blogs, and others offered little hope. Dark clouds accompanied a flood of early predictions concerning the eventual outcome of a game under the Friday night lights against the nationally ranked DeMatha Stags. But the Eagles did not doubt. They were certain. From the beginning of the season Gonzaga Football had one acronym in mind: NEF. Now Embrace Finish. On the night of October 16th against the No. 2 team in the country in front of thousands watching in the stands and

on national television, they exceeded expectations and emerged victorious in convincing fashion. With incredible catches from Max Fisher (Who made ESPN’s Sportscenter Top Plays) and Jirhe Love, vital runs from Tyree Randolph protected by his strong offensive line, and defensive vigor from the likes of Joseph Zuccari and Nick “Box” McEvoy, the Eagles were able to defeat the Stags. One phrase that was continuously heard after their 24-17 win was “Shock the World.” This was repeated the following week as the Eagles secured a 32-13 win in Olney against the Good

Counsel Falcons. That evening, quarterback Sam Brown’s two touchdown passes and Mitchell Johns’ two interceptions led to their first 8-0 record in years. Set to face a stout Archbishop Carroll team on Senior Day and St. John’s as their final regular season game. anyone especially going into the playoffs. We have to take it one game at a time.” says junior defensive end Roger Mellado. It took months of endurance and dedication for this team to be on the verge of history. They’ve been questioned for a lack of size and strength. They’ve been doubted in the numbers game as critics have pointed to a handful of scholarship offers. But no one can doubt their will. The love that unifies the Eagles each week is reinforced by the crowd in purple. With high expectations late in the season, the sky’s the limit for Gonzaga football.
