Community planting day in Mitchell Shire
Mitchell Shire Council is holding a National Tree Day event on Sunday 30 July at the Seymour Resource Recovery Centre.
Council has been supporting National Tree Day since 2001, planting more than 94,000 native grasses, shrubs and trees on Council land and at local schools.
Nature was identified as a key theme in the Mitchell 2050 Community Vision, with the community setting a goal that “our natural reserves will be home to a rich ecological system supporting our important native flora and fauna.”
To assist in achieving these goals, Council is organising two activities:
• A tour of the new Seymour Resource Recovery Centre to see how waste gets sorted for reuse and recycling from 9.30am to 10am.
Planting around the dam at the Resource Recovery Centre to improve water quality and create a habitat for native wildlife from 10am to 12pm.
All community members are welcome to join the planting day at Seymour Resource Recovery Centre, 470 Seymour-Tooborac Road, Hilldene. Please bring suitable clothing, footwear, and a water bottle.
Strath Creek Landcare Group
This is a fund raising activity for Strath Creek Landcare Group who is contracted by Trust for Nature to plant trees on the property Aardvark. The trees are within covenanted areas of the property. The previous owners gifted the property to Trust for Nature.
Aim is to plant trees: What we need to do is dig a hole with a Hamilton Planter or mattock, plant a tree, protect with a weed mat, guards and stakes. The areas are low lying so no hill planting. Each planting site has been spot sprayed. The objective is to fulfill the wishes of the previous owners and increase the vegetation in the covenant sites, promoting wildlife and diversity plantings.
Afterwards we have a scrumptious BBQ and refreshments to celebrate the planting and promotion of covenanted sites on private property. A portable toilet is on site.
