GOULBURN RIVER & RANGES

The 9th Annual Shearing for Kids with Cancer Fundraising Day The 9th Annual Shearing for Kids with Cancer Fundraising Day once again met expectations as the shearing shed at Bill and Val Barlow’s property in Wanalta came to life. With 20 shearers taking turns to shear 550 sheep and twenty-five shed hands/ wool classers working together to keep the wool off the board, donating their day’s pay and time to support the charity event and help raise over $50,000. The event, which is very close to the hearts of the Rushworth and Nagambie communities, commenced in 2014 with a Fundraising Event to support 3-year-old Lori Perry and her family when Lori was diagnosed with cancer. Lori finished her treatment in 2015. However, the sentiment and support of the event has seen it continue year after year. In March this year, Lori's cancer returned, and she is again undergoing treatment. Event organizers Katrina and Bill Ogden have been the driving force of this shearing event, which is now also known for its Goods & Services Auction and Raffles and raising additional funds for charity with donations over the nine years exceeding $250,000. 100% of these funds have gone to My Room - Children's Cancer Charity, a volunteer-led organization that funds support for families, medical equipment, clinical care, research and trials.

My Room has only one paid employee;

$0.95 in every dollar raised goes directly into their programs

Their vision is a 100% cure rate for childhood cancers.

My Room - Children's Cancer Charity has supported Lori and the Perry Family in Lori's current cancer battle, providing a family home in Melbourne for the duration of her treatment, meaning that when she is not in hospital, Lori can be together with her sister, two brothers and parents while still being close to care. The house has allowed the Perry family to have precious family time together, provided a comfortable environment for Lori to rest and recover, allowed her to be discharged from hospital due to the proximity of care if needed and significantly reduced the amount of travel between Nagambie and Melbourne. The My Room Children's Cancer Charity does so many beautiful things for sick children and their families, and this year, they celebrated their 30th Birthday with a Gala Ball on Saturday, 26th August, at the Palladium at Crown with over 1500 guests in attendance. Lori, her sister Lani and Parents Caylee and Simon were guest speakers for the night, sharing their story of Lori's journey. When Lori was three, she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour. After a long, challenging fight, she was finally cancer-free. Eight years later, Lori and her family again face a massive battle. Lori was experiencing back pain that kept getting worse. Scans revealed that she had tumours on her spine, vertebrae and liver. As the room was captivated and touched by their journey, pledges began to come in, and coupled with Auction Items and raffles, $963,000 was raised during the evening, a record for the charity. The fundraising continues on Friday, September 29th, with the Annual Footy Show Grand Final Eve My Room Children's Cancer Telethon. The telethon will screen on Channel 9 and 9NOW from 7:30 pm. Lori is the face and voice of this year's campaign as we aim to top last year's $3.375m. Donations can be made on the night or via www. myroom.com.au
