Inni (Live DVD/CD)   Slated for release on 7 November, this live DVD and double CD is a must-have for fans of this ambient Icelandic act. Among other things, Inni holds a live filming of Sigur Rós’ 2008 concert in Alexandra Palace. Two tracks — “Ný Batterí” and “Festival” — have already been released for free download off of the band’s Website and music lovers will not be disappointed! 80 | NOV. 2011

What do you get if you subtract Liam Gallagher from Oasis? You get High Flying Birds — the first solo album from Noel Gallagher, and his edgy-yet-soft vocals have really been missed. The lead single, “The Dreams We Have As Children,” was first recorded four years ago and was then made available on iTunes two years later. Lyrically, it’s hard not to like this album and musically... it’s produced by the guy who worked with Oasis and that’s unmistakable. Release Date: 8 Nov. Reason to go listen to it: Because talent like Noel Gallagher’s doesn’t fade away, it simply matures and this album is the evidence.

Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. has found fame as “Common Sense” and now, simply “Common.” He’s had his fair share of controversy and once caused a feud with a popular West Coast rap group by criticizing where the rap and hip-hop-scene was going. This album sees Common’s return to his roots and, as Common says himself, he’s working towards creating “positive hip-hop,” and it sure has a good feel to it. You might want to check out the single, “Ghetto Dreams,” to see what I mean. Release Date: 22 Nov. Reason to go listen to it: Because this has that old school edge that’s hard to play at a low volume!

One of the things that captures this band for me, is their name. Have you ever wondered why, “Florence + the Machine”? Well it’s Florence Welch that collaborates with a variety of different musicians that give her the sound she’s looking for. This is her second studio album and for a UK independent act to break America successfully, Florence is sure choosing her machines very well! The album’s lead single, “What the Water Gave Me,” was released in August and has so far achieved chart success, while “Shake It Out” was released in late September and has already been named “Best New Track” by popular music webzine Pitchfork. Release Date: 1 Nov. Reason to go listen to it: It’s an album produced by Paul Epworth of Adele fame; we all know how well he’s done!

She was originally planning a re-release of last year’s album Loud with some new material but, subsequently, Rihanna decided that she had enough new stuff to do something totally different. Unsurprisingly for this songstress, she’s already topping the charts with the album’s first single, the Calvin Harris produced, “We Found Love.” The single sold like crazy upon being release; though this might have something to do with her being told to get off a farmer’s field while filming the music video — the farmer thought she wasn’t wearing enough clothing! Release Date: 21 Nov. Reason to go listen to it: Because if you liked her reggae-infused “Man Down” from Loud, you’ll find more songs like it on this album.

So, what should come first? Music or lyrics? According to Bradford James Cox, you don’t write lyrics in advance. Bradford’s a guitar buff and you can hear that throughout the track “Mona Lisa”; it has a distinctly haunting melodic appeal. Though this album may be described as “trippy,” it really is a good listen. Bradford describes his writing style as drifting off into a trance only to come out of it to find he has music! This album will take you into your own trance and you’ll love it. Even the title Parallax is a word that describes seeing things from different perspectives — it captures this album perfectly! Release Date: 8 Nov. Reason to go listen: Because it’s interesting music that challenges.
