Tenerife enjoys a high five with IAGTO

Year-round sunshine will be awaiting the visitors to Tenerife as the island plays host to the prestigious IAGTO Tenerife Golf Trophy (May 20-23, 2019). It’s the fifth hosting of the popular tournament, which has previously been staged in Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, Costa Blanca and Costa Calida and is regarded as one of the leading events on the golf tourism calendar. More than 90 tour operators from 29 countries will descend upon the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands to discover the many golf, cultural and historic experiences that Tenerife has to offer, as well as meeting with representatives from regional golf resorts, golf courses, hotels and inbound operators. Tenerife features nine courses and a wide variety of layouts: Buenavista and Real Club de Golf de Tenerife in the north, and Golf Costa Adeje, Abama, Las Americas, Golf del Sur, Amarilla, and Los Palos in the south. Tecina Golf is a 40-minute ferry ride from the mainland on the beautiful island of La Gomera. The accommodation options are also excellent and can meet the demands of any type of holiday and several top-class hotels are several taking part in the programme to showcase the destination even further. IAGTO spokesperson, Peter Walton, said: “Tenerife remains a superb destination for golfers throughout the year with its inviting climate. There is rich diversity among the golf courses and the accommodation options are second to none. I’m sure it will be a

fantastic event.” Tenerife Golf’s Carlos Beautell, said: “It’s a huge honour to host the IAGTO Tenerife Golf Trophy. We look forward to providing our customary warm welcome and we will be proud to show everyone the quality of our golf courses and the ongoing attraction of our island.” The event is just one of the highlights in a busy 2019 on the Tenerife golf calendar as it continues to promote the destination to UK and European golfers in partnership with leading UK agency Azalea. A pan-European group media trip will also take place in April with journalists from countries across the continent experiencing the special attraction of the popular island and the quality, value and depth of Tenerife golf. Average year-round temperatures of 23°c Tenerife provide the ideal climate to enjoy a relaxing golf break thanks to cooling trade winds; while - in contrast to almost everywhere else - golf and hotel rates are generally 20 per cent cheaper in the summer months. The island also offers 70km of beaches and a wide range of cultural highlights and activities both on and off the water, making it the ideal location for a golf break. Tenerife is served by two airports - Tenerife North and Tenerife South - and is barely a four-hour flight from the UK, and no more than a five-hour direct flight from most main European cities. Prince’s Golf Club offering free entry to historic junior event Prince’s Golf Club offering free entry to historic junior event Prince’s Golf Club in Sandwich Bay, Kent, is offering free entry into its prestigious Laddie Lucas Spoon junior open. The distinguished competition takes place on Wednesday 10th April 2019 at Prince’s and entry is open to all boys and girls aged between 8 to 13 years old on the day of the event. Laddie Lucas, whose father co-founded the club in 1906, was an avid patron of junior golf and set up the event more than 25 years ago. Junior golfers from around the country compete for the hickory-shafted Spoon; the club that Laddie used as a boy to win a competition with aged six and make a holein-one aged nine. Rob McGuirk, General Manager at Prince’s, commented: “The Laddie Lucas Spoon is an extremely important event to us

and is a big part of the history and legacy of Prince’s Golf Club. “By providing entry, free-of-charge, we aim to continue Laddie’s vision for this event as open to all, regardless of background, and played in the spirit of the rules and etiquette of the game.” Born at Prince’s, Laddie grew up playing at the club and went on to become a celebrated fighter pilot in the RAF, Conservative MP and successful businessman, as well as an excellent writer and highly talented golfer. Famously, Laddie was forced to make an emergency landing during World War 2 on the grounds of Prince’s after navigating his way home across the English Channel in a badly damaged Spitfire. Complimentary entry to the event, via a ballot, includes lunch and although primarily an 18-hole, scratch stableford competition, there are various handicap competitions and prizes to be won based on age. Discounted accommodation packages are also available for the event at The Lodge at Prince’s and in addition to the Laddie Lucas Spoon there is also an adult and junior pairs competition on Tuesday 9th April. He won the Nevada State Amateur as a 17-year-old, went to Purdue to help the Boilermakers win the Big 10 golf title in 1981 and on to the NCAA Tournament. AKE LAS VEGAS, Nev. – How do you resurrect a dead, awardwinning golf resort?

It’s not easy, but Reflection Bay Golf Club on the shores of Lake Las Vegas may be a one of the best examples. The real estate recession of 2008 nailed the opulent subdivision in Henderson, which included the fabulous Jack Nicklaus’ designed Reflection Bay, along with the private Nicklaus South Shore Golf Club, and The Falls designed by Tom Weiskopf. Reflection Bay and The Falls closed in 2009, but Paulson and Company, a conglomerate founded by American hedge fund manager John Paulson, reopened Reflection Bay in 2014. All the newest technology will be here, including indoor hitting bays with TrackMan, and two PGA Tour professionals to guide you on a journey to become the best you can be. Craig Barlow, a Henderson native, and Jim Gallagher are the two PGA Tour players who have been hired as teaching instructors. Barlow had a storied amateur career in Las Vegas winning every amateur title before turning professional in 1995. He made 170 cuts in PGA Tour events and has played in six U.S. Open Championships, one PGA Championship and one British Open. Barlow’s most heralded course record is a 63 at Cypress Point that is shared with Ben Hogan. Barlow states that his teaching philosophy is focused on proper set up, lack of tension, great rhythm in the swing and the realization that we shoot lower scores by increased focus on the “scoring areas of the game, 100 yards and in.” Gallagher grew up in Indiana and attended Ball State. His brother Jim and sister Jackie both played the professional tours. Jeff turned professional in 1987 where he won twice, on the then Ben Hogan Tour, the 1990 Cleveland Open and the 2000 Web.com Tour’s South Carolina Classic. He still competes on the PGA Champions Tour. “I hope The Lake Las Vegas Golf Academy will take, say, a very good

A 320acre man-made lake is the centerpiece of this high-end residential resort community.

Nicklaus designed this course out of the rugged desert and came up with an Oasis. When Nicklaus returned in 2014 he removed 12 bunkers and reshaped another dozen on the 7,184, par 72. Five holes stretch along a mile and a half of sunny shoreline, with greens connecting the hillside property of the luxurious Westin Lake Las Vegas. The 200-yard, par-3 eighth, which showcases a peninsula jutting out into Lake Las Vegas. addition, courtyard villas, Venetian-style waterfront homes, and luxury executive homes climb the hillsides. You can also dine in the clubhouse or outside patio seating. Weddings are also on the menu. Stay and play

Newly remodeled (2018) Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort provides the best option for your golf vacation that lends luxury accommodations -- 493 rooms and suites, two pools, multiple dining options and its own spa facility located just a pitching wedge from the golf course. Ask about the stay and play package. There’s a 90,000-square feet of indoor/outdoor meeting space and try the dining at Rick’s Cafe and Marssa. Lake Las Vegas offers multiple water sports activities and outdoor adventure options. Additionally, Lake Las Vegas is located just a short ride from the center of the Las Vegas “Strip” for those that want to experience the entertainment that Las Vegas has to offer. Perhaps the best is the solitude you get at Lake Las Vegas and starry nights. I’ve played most of the area golf courses and can say Reflection Bay is my personal favorite and it is very playable. Don’t miss it.

n 2014, Scott DeLong needed answers to two important questions before interviewing for the position of Head Golf Professional on the island of Anguilla. “I wasn’t familiar with the island, so I Googled to find out where it was. I was also eager to see what kind of golf course they had.” DeLong learned that Anguilla was the most northern of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean and was home to 33 spectacular beaches. He also discovered that CuisinArt Golf Course was not only owned and operated by CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa, his new course was designed by none other than Greg Norman. Upon arriving on Anguilla, DeLong was blown away to see that 15 of CuisinArt’s 18 championship golf holes featured water. Even better,

22 Golf Vacations • March 2019

from the CuisinArt clubhouse and restaurant balcony, DeLong was treated to amazing views of Anguilla, the Caribbean Sea, and the neighboring island of St. Martin. Hard to Beat With each passing year, Anguilla has gone from under the radar status to one of the most popular islands to vacation. Hardly a week goes by that DeLong doesn’t rub shoulders with an A-list celebrity, a sports superstar, or a visitor who is so blown away by Anguilla’s beauty that they invest in a second home on the island. As for golf, 2019 is a breakthrough year as the 7,000-yard 18-hole layout has seen a sizable cash infusion since recovering from Hurricane Irma in 2017. CuisinArt’s Director of Golf Operations Don Johnson was also given the green light for massive improvements that include a new irrigation system and converting to Better Billy Bunkers with imported silica sand. One of the main takeaways from the CuisinArt golf experience is the reminder that despite playing on a course with such magnificent views, there’s a feeling that you’re all by yourself. “This feeling of solitude is amazing. Norman purposely routed the course so you’re rarely along side another hole. When you combine the ocean views, the sounds of waves crashing, and our lush green Bermuda grass, CuisinArt is hard to beat,” DeLong said. Swept Away by Sea Views The visual action starts right from the 384-yard, Par 4, first tee box. On this lead hole, Norman sweeps golfers off their feet with a panoramic view of St. Martin. In you thought that was a fluke, the second hole offers brilliant ocean views while sharing a 16,000-square-foot green with the 10th hole. Depending on what month you’re playing, a golfer never knows what he or she might witness whenever sneaking a glimpse of the Caribbean Sea. In the winter season, neighboring St. Martin is famous for the mega-yachts that frequent the island, and in the month of March, everyone sets their calendars for the Heineken Regatta, the largest warm weather regatta in the world. At some point by the back nine, you realize that Anguilla’s trade winds typically have played an integral part in your round. Norman factored the island’s winds when he designed the course. On each hole, golfers should prepare for a slight mind game as to how to approach your tee shot based on whether the wind is at your back, in your face, or if there’s a cross wind.

Great Golf and Island Life Whereas much of Anguilla was punished by Hurricane Irma, CuisinArt Golf Club escaped relatively unscathed. “Most of our native trees are less than 20 feet tall, so they were able withstand Irma. What’s interesting is we’ve found new grasses that have popped up. Some of the sprouts have traveled as far as the island of Guadeloupe which is located 170 miles south of us,” DeLong said. The good news is Anguilla is almost totally revitalized since Irma. A great vantage point to daydream about island beaches or reminisce about your golf round is CuisinArt’s Santorini Restaurant. The whitewashed Mediterranean-style structure not only provides an awesome backdrop for CuisinArt’s Par 4, 430-yard finishing hole, it’s a perfect setting for

lunch or a refreshing cocktail. The elevated perch from the restaurant deck provides some of the best views in all of Anguilla. On this deck looking out on St. Martin, DeLong was asked what he finds special about his new home. “When I arrived, I knew very little about Anguilla, and I was single. Now, only four years later, I’m married with two children. On weekends I take my wife and children on picnics to secluded portions of the island. My family enjoys island life on some of the most beautiful beaches you could ever imagine. CuisinArt Golf Club and Anguilla, what’s not to love?” DeLong said with a smile. http://www.cuisinartresort.com/cuisinart-golf-club.html

Attractive Golf Options Abound For You And Your Golf Groups In 2019 26 Golf Vacations • March 2019 The Champion Course - No.3 PGA National

While most of the country sits in a deep freeze or is dealing with dormant course conditions, now is the perfect time to begin thinking about where you and your golf group should visit in 2019. Should you all head to a resort or course on your must-play lists? Maybe head out to a destination with multiple courses and a little bit of everything within its cozy confines or nearby? Or perhaps your group likes to discover gems in places not really known for golf. We’ve got you covered like a blanket of snow (or layers of clothing for those lucky enough to be playing golf this winter). Below is a list of golf destinations that you and your favorite foursome should explore this year.

Giants Ridge

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas

The Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo Resort & Villas is home to the iconic “Teeth of the Dog” course. Since opening in 1974, “Teeth” is widely recognized as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean and is continually ranked in the top 50 courses in the world. Pete Dye’s design hallmarks are all present: railroad ties, vast waste areas, peninsula greens and tees, hand-sculpted putting surfaces and a unique assortment of pot bunkers. The oceanfront holes --- affectionately dubbed “The Heaven 7” – are astoundingly beautiful, causing Dye to famously quip: “I created 11 holes and God created seven.” Teeth of the Dog

Set in the rugged beauty of the Mesabi Iron Range in upstate Minnesota, Giants Ridge boasts two layouts ranked among the best in the Gopher State. Designed by noted course architect Jeff Brauer, the aptly-named The Quarry is built on the site of a former sand quarry and iron ore mine. Dramatically raised tees and hazards forged from reclaimed and repurposed mine land set The Quarry apart from other courses, and why many publications list it as the top public course in Minnesota. As its name implies, The Legend offers flat-out legendary golf. Carved out of the Superior National Forest, The Legend is a true “northwoods” course featuring towering pines, giant fairways and majestic views of Wynne and Sabin Lakes. Brauer also designed The Legends, yet is a completely different experience from The Quarry, and one of the reasons why Giants Ridge is considered one of the state’s best golf destinations. Located an easy one-hour drive from Duluth and three hours from the Twin Cities, Giants Ridge offers overnight accommodations – from suites and villas to rustic and modern homes – perfect for golf groups and families. www.giantsridge.com

Destination Kohler Twenty-seven-hole Dye Fore joined Teeth of the Dog in 2002. Its three nines – Chavon, Marina and Lakes – are distinct. Chavon features seven holes running atop cliffs dropping 300 feet; Marina meanders down to a harbor ringed by restaurants and shops, and Lakes is artfully crafted across tumultuous terrain. Golf course architecture aficionados call Dye Fore “the most underrated course in the Caribbean.” Located in the interior of the property is the resort’s third Dye layout, The Links. The moderately hilly track with tall Bahia grass framing bunkers and undulating greens presents spectacular Caribbean views. Slightly over 7,000 yards from the back tees and playing to a slope of 126, The Links is considered one of the most-forgiving courses Dye has designed. The resort’s golf amenities are complemented by spacious hotel rooms, suites and luxury villas. Expertly prepared cuisine from around the world, a 370-slip Marina & Yacht Club, Polo & Equestrian Club, the La Terraza Tennis Center, 245-acre Shooting Club and Altos de Chavon – an artisan’s village modeled after a 16th century Mediterranean city – are other on-property highlights. www.casadecampo.com.do

Although Wisconsin doesn’t normally come to mind when thinking of Spring Break, a trip to Kohler can be an ideal way to kick off the 2019 golf season. Located one hour north of Milwaukee and two hours north of Chicago, Destination Kohler features four Pete Dye-designed courses across its Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run facilities. Whistling Straits’ The Straits will be the site of the 2020 Ryder Cup. Perennially ranked among the finest layouts in the world, The Straits has previously played host to three PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open. As the first resort course to host a domestic Ryder Cup in nearly 30 years, golfers of all skill levels will have an opportunity to play it before 24 of the world’s best come to town in September 2020. Stretching over two miles along the Lake Michigan shoreline, The Straits course features some of golf’s most-recognizable vistas. Ranked No. 4 in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses,” Dye’s time-honored trademark of visual intimidation keeps golfers on their toes. Players will need to bring their A-game to tackle the track that’s seen Vijay Singh, Martin Kaymer and Jason Day crowned as PGA Champions. Just inland of The Straits sits The Irish. By masterfully routing the

course through large dunes, Dye sculpted a little piece of Ireland in the Badger State. Named “Blind Man’s Bluff,” the 13th hole features a sunken green obscured by a large dune like the famous “Dell Hole” at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare. Both memorable and traditional, The Irish proves there is no need to purchase a plane ticket to the Emerald Isle to experience golf in the Old World. Set in a river basin formed by glacial runoff and a short drive from the charming town of Kohler sits The River and The Meadow Valleys courses at Blackwolf Run. The Meadow Valleys flows along the natural features of the surrounding terrain, winding through pastures and ravines. Tipping at 7,404 yards, The River is characterized by small landing areas, strategic bunkering and large undulating greens. It’s a classic risk / reward Dye design that GOLF Magazine has called “the nation’s finest public-access course of modern times.” Accommodations include the iconic American Club, the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in the Badger state, as well as the newly-renovated Inn on Woodlake, which works exceptionally well for buddies’ trips. www. Oglebay

The par-71 Arnold Palmer design is a modern links layout that takes advantage of the rolling terrain with strategically-placed bunkers, contemporary mounding and ample-size greens. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Jones Course is draped over the hills and dales of a former dairy farm, and hosted the West Virginia LPGA Classic for 11 years. PGA Golf Club

Ranked among the “Top 75 Golf Resorts in North America” by Golf Digest, PGA Golf Club is home to three breathtaking golf courses offering truly unique experiences. Start with the Wanamaker Course, named in honor of Rodman Wanamaker who inspired the birth of the PGA of America 100 years ago. Widely considered as one of the most picturesque layouts in Florida, legendary architect Tom Fazio designed a course that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Fairways routed around Oglebay

wetlands, over gentle hills and through native palmetto and sabal palms make for an unforgettable round of golf, while large bunkers guarding greens provide a risk-reward element that’s hard to find anywhere else in the Sunshine State. Then there is the Dye Course, which features some of the most elaborate bunkers east of the Mississippi. Designed by the mastermind himself, Pete Dye, and ranked in Florida’s top 20, it’s as beautiful as it is challenging. Deep pot bunkers, vast coquina waste areas and devilish greens treat guests to a wildly entertaining round of golf. Named after Samuel Ryder, the namesake and founder of the Ryder Cup, the Ryder Course recently completed a renovation project that enhanced the greens and surrounding areas. The layout meanders over rolling hills and through majestic pine trees, and several lakes and ponds line the fairways and guard the greens, requiring golfers to be sharp on tee shots and approaches. But rest easy, large landing areas make it a treat to play for all skill levels. In 2021, PGA Golf Club will host the PGA Professional Championship on the Wanamaker and Ryder Courses. The tournament, which will occur in the spring, will be comprised of players who advance from the 41 PGA Section Championships, along with past champions. All four rounds will be broadcast live on The Golf Channel. PGA Golf Club is located in Port St. Lucie, which is also the Spring Training home of the New York Mets. Throughout the year, the Mets’

Class A Advanced affiliate plays games just a few miles from the golf club. PGA Golf Club is less than a two-hour drive from Orlando and Miami – and under three hours from Tampa, Fort Myers and other Florida population centers. PGA Golf Club is conveniently located 50 minutes north of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), off Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie. PBI offers nearly 100 nonstop flights to more than 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada. www.pgavillage.com

PGA National

If you’re a fan of golf, you’re probably familiar with the famous “Bear Trap” on the celebrated Champion Course at South Florida’s PGA National Resort & Spa. Now is your chance to try and tame it. The legendary resort features 90 holes of exceptional golf and recently completed a “head-to-toe” renovation by Jack Nicklaus and his design team to the mighty Champion, host of the PGA TOUR’s wildly popular Honda Classic. PGA National features four added first-class layouts: The Palmer, The Fazio, The Squire and The Estate. Additionally, “on campus” are the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and David Pelz Scoring Game School for individual instruction and group clinics; Every Ball Counts – the world’s first science-based, statisticsdriven training system for golf improvement is offered at its off-site Estate Course; and Cool Club, its state-of-the-art PGA TOUR level club fitting facility.

Pinehurst #4 - 11th Hole

The resort’s 33,000-square-foot world-class Sports & Racquet Club features a wide array of fitness activities and classes, including pickleball and tennis on 18 Har-Tru tennis courts (11 lit for night play). Not to be missed is a visit to The Spa, which recently renovated its ladies lounge with sleek new furnishings, contemporary décor, steam rooms, saunas and indoor whirlpools. PGA National features exceptional dining options for all tastes including its chef-driven Ironwood Steak & Seafood restaurant. www.pgaresort.com/

Pinehurst No. 4

In 2017, Pinehurst hired world-renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse to build a 789-yard short course called, The Cradle. After this fun and inviting course opened to critical acclaim, the resort’s leadership brought Hanse, along with his partner Jim Wagner, back to reimagine the property’s course No. 4. Hanse equated re-designing No. 4 as a chance to “play in the sand,” as nothing in golf compares to the Sandhills region of North Carolina

and its underlying soil. His team set out to revive its original sandy, scrubby and rugged aesthetic by restoring the course back to its original landforms. They recreated the hole corridors, reconnected the elevations and restored natural features native to the region. With a gleaming lake as the centerpiece and natural ridgelines defining corridors, golfers are now treated to a brazen blend of sand, native wire grasses and wider fairways. Golfers of all skill levels will surely appreciate Pinehurst’s second rendezvous with Hanse, as both parties continuously set out to create an enjoyable, interesting and welcoming golf experience. Located just over an hour from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and within a half-day’s journey from many East Coast cities, Pinehurst is a surprisingly accessible property. With the many entertaining and unique additions that have been made to the property, including the brand-new Pinehurst Brewery, now more than ever it’s a golf oasis worthy of an annual pilgrimage. www.pinehurst.com

XXIO Prime Driver by Barry Lotz

X

XIO, pronounced ZEK-si-oh, is not only one of the bestselling drivers in Japan, but has gained a strong foothold in the States since its introduction about seven years ago. Ernie Els is the brand ambassador, and the” Big Easy’s” seemingly slow, but powerful swing encapsulates and aligns with the XXIO brand. Inbee Park also uses XXIO. The XXIO series has been number one in annual sales in Japan for 18 years since it first debuted. This 460cc niche driver is highly favored by the male baby boomer and fits, according to Chuck Thiry--VP of XXIO’s North America headquarters, almost all women. The driver performs exceptionally well for those golfers who really do swing slower (below 90 mph) and for Thiry, the phrase: “easy does it” translates into high-end sales for well-heeled golfers. I personally have gained between 10-15 yards with the XXIO Prime! Not only will you own one of the most expensive drivers on the market, but you will increase your distance with the XXIO Prime Driver. XXIO is renowned for their use of luxurious materials and quality products. This driver is, for lack of a better word, an awesome driver in many aspects, but specifically for a player with a moderate speed swing and an open checkbook. The 252- gram driver includes a 36-gram shaft and comes in a standard 46.5-inch length. The 460 cc Prime driver produces highlaunching shots that produce excellent distance and balls tend to fly straighter. The Prime is one of those few drivers that produces the sensation of swinging itself. This super feeling comes from the club’s special SP-1000 Graphite shaft. Additionally, the hosel has been shifted 2 millimeters closer and 2 degrees more upright creating a more rectangular appearance. The SP-900 shaft, aka the engine of the club, is a TORAYCA T1100G Carbon and NANOALLOY Resin shaft which allows the tip section to be extremely soft, which results in the clubhead being able to remain square just at the moment of impact. This effect is so powerful that it can reduce or even eliminate your slice after just one swing. The powerful Forged Super TIX Plus Winged Cup-face, with 8-2 titanium, is forged from exotic titanium and maraging steel. Married together, the face expands the size of the high COR (Coefficient of Restitution) area in the heel and toe for a wider sweet spot, where you can expect exemplary distance performance. Combined with the new Sole Channel Structure, which allows for better face flexibility at impact – especially in the lower face – the new XXIO Prime driver provides increased forgiveness to promote faster, more consistent ball speed. The 6-gram weight in the back of the sole

www.golfvacationsmag.com

helps lower the center of gravity which encourages a higher launch angle and more spin. The Prime is extremely light weight compared to other drivers. It imbues the user with the feeling of confidence at address, together with the feeling you are swinging faster and easier. Shots fly off the face, and as the golf pundits and coaches always say, lighter clubs are faster clubs. The driver is available in both a 10.5° and 11.5° in both a regular and stiff regular flex only. Currently, only right-handed models are available. For more details, visit: www.xxiousa.com
