Quality Golf, Value and Location, Make Daytona Beach A Rising Golf Destination Daytona Beach Area is Home to More Than 20 Courses and is Perfect for a Golf Trip

D

aytona Beach, Fla. – Mention Daytona Beach and people tend to think of NASCAR and one of America’s iconic beach destinations, but savvy golfers know the area has quietly emerged as one of Florida’s best buddies trips. The reasons for Daytona Beach’s increasing popularity with golfers are three-fold: the area is home to outstanding public courses, the value is tremendous, and the location ensures a good time on and off the course. Golf course options are a driving force behind every trip and the Daytona Beach area, home to more than 20 layouts and a short drive from many more, delivers on that account. LPGA International, home of the acclaimed Jones and Hills courses, is the area’s most high profile facility. LPGA International has challenged the world’s best women’s golfers - World Golf Hall of Famer Karrie Webb has celebrated a pair of victories on the Jones Course - and annually hosts collegiate national championships and the finals of the Symetra

Tour Qualifying School. Both the Jones and Hills courses are 4-star layouts, according to Golf Digest, but they are hardly alone in delivering an outstanding experience. Halifax Plantation, which plays through centuries-old live oak trees and is one of the area’s prettiest layouts, is another 4-star caliber design that has earned rave reviews from golfers. Spruce Creek Country Club is built around one of the world’s largest private airports, giving new meaning to the term “flyer,” on a layout that places a premium on playability and quality conditioning. Venetian Bay Golf Club is yet another 4-star layout that offers a diversity of challenges. Golfers play through tree-lined fairways on the opening nine before facing an open, links-style design after the turn. Enjoyable as Daytona Beach’s golf offerings are, the ability to pair them with accommodations for stay-and-play packages maximizes value and makes planning much

easier for group leaders. With nearly 30 different golf packages available, Daytona Beach has the ability to cater to any nearly type of trip. An integral part of any great buddies trip is what happens off the course, and few destinations in America can come close to matching Daytona Beach’s offerings, starting with 23 miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean beaches. Golfers can enjoy the thrill of a great round in the morning and the exhilaration of a guided tour around Daytona International Speedway, highlighted by the opportunity to experience the track’s 31-degree high bank corners for themselves. Throw-in scenic parks, deep-sea fishing, Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, world class dining and night life, among countless other activities, and it’s not hard to see why Daytona Beach is poised to become a destination of choice for golfers. ot even Jack Nicklaus messes with Mother Nature. When this designer of over 400 golf courses was tapped to take on Quivira Golf Course in Los Cabos, Mexico, the Golden Bear carved, shaped, and ultimately embraced the Mother of all Baja golf landscapes.

reads your mind by positioning something called a Comfort Station at the top of the cliff. The Comfort Station serves complimentary breakfast burritos along with your choice of beverage. As you sip an orange juice, cold beer, or tequila cocktail, pull up your golf socks before checking out the view at the fifth hole tee box.

If great art picks up where nature ends, then Nicklaus’ Quivira design reflects this mantra in a 7100-yard composition of sheer cliffs, majestic elevations, and thunderstruck ocean waves. Upon opening in 2014, Quivira was acclaimed as the Best New International Course.

Quivira Comfort For the macho player who chooses to play from the black tees, the postage stamp 5th hole tee box is basically a cliff surrounded by a wall of Pacific Ocean blue. If you think Nicklaus has played all his aces before the turn, realize that the next hole, the Par 3, 180yard 6th hole is just as ocean friendly, or unfriendly, depending upon where your ball lands. At this point you realize that Jack must have felt like an artist on steroids when he designed Quivira.

One’s mind shifts into overdrive when imagining what this tumultuous 18-hole layout looked and felt like before Nicklaus worked his magic. Nicklaus’ before picture included craggy terrain, breakneck inclines, and ocean views that go on for miles. The Quivira of today features awe-inspiring tee shots, Himalayan-like peaks, and more undulations than a Los Cabos Salsa Instructor on Red Bull. Uncommon Overlooks Nicklaus wastes no time in making uncommon occurrences par for the course on both Quivira nines. The dramatic crescendo starts at the first tee box with the Pacific Ocean clapping at your back for the first of many aquatic standing ovations. As you navigate Platinum Paspalum fairways, half-moon bunkers, and more cactus than an Clint Eastwood western, you’ll need to catch your breath after dropping your putt at the 600-yard, Par 5, fourth hole. The breather is necessary because you’re about to partake in an oxygen rush that goes straight up. The one mile golf cart ride between the fourth and fifth hole is like no other in the universe. If you think this statement is merely bravado, consider this: You’ll encounter not one, not two, but three scenic overlooks on your way to the fifth tee box. This spectacular visual to the east may have you thinking this image is something you and your golf partners should celebrate. Quivira

14 Golf Vacations • April 2017

By the time you do get to the turn you’ll find the second of three Comfort Stations. You may need a beverage to steel your nerves in anticipation of the Par 5, 600-yard 12th hole. This Matterhorn of a golf hole will have you yodeling in Spanish if your second shot goes too far left. As your golf cart plunges toward the equator, the fairway slaloms vertically toward the Pacific Ocean. The 12th takes a hard left at the putting green as you regain your equilibrium. Brace yourself after sinking your putt. It’s time to get vertical and drive up a steep bank to the 13th, another ocean hole. If you’re beginning to think that Quivira is a one-of-a-kind golf Baja memory maker, you’re right. Not only did Jack maximize the views offered by Quivira and the Pueblo Bonito Resort’s 1800-acres, he also tapped into his inner geologist. Brad Pitt, Boulder Jack, and Whale Watcher The Quivira property dates back hundreds of years. Flashing back to the 7th hole, you’ve already experienced a castle-like building that is the oldest still-standing structure in Los Cabos. This building served as a lighthouse in the early 1900s and exudes enough character that

www.golfvacationsmag.com

it’s visible in the movie “Troy” starring Brad Pitt. Nicklaus the artist seamlessly incorporated the lighthouse into his Quivira design, and this landmark can be viewed from various vantage points throughout the course.

http://quiviragolfclub.com

https://www.pueblobonito.com/quivira-golf-club

On the 16th hole, Nicklaus literally dug deep into Quivira’s history. On this 490-yard Par 4, Jack the Geologist tipped his hat to the men who moved heaven and earth creating Quivira. Jack left a giant boulder In the middle of the 16th fairway. Rather than moving this ancient rock, Nicklaus voted to keep it in its discovered resting place. Depending on where your tee shot lands, the 16th is your opportunity to pay homage to a rock dubbed Boulder Jack. The 18th hole finisher is your last ocean hole hurrah. There is at least a 50-50 chance of spotting a humpback whale frolicking in the Pacific behind the massive 18th green. After completing your Baja round for the ages, spying a whale is the ultimate Los Cabos tribute to Mother Nature. As you shake hands with your playing partners, your Moby moment is Jack’s way of saying, “I hope you had a whale of a time at Quivira.”

here are certain people, many wines, and a collection of golf courses that age gracefully, some better than others. But most folks eventually could use a nip and tuck here and there (though they won’t admit it); perhaps a vintage requires a little blending (again, only on a need to know basis); or a celebrated layout simply requires a tweak (for all the world to know). That last bit is what has been carried out at the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. What was maturing nicely and was very, very good, was improved. Brilliant. The 40-square-mile Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation reserve just outside Phoenix/Scottsdale is home to two of Arizona’s best golf courses – along with a fine resort/spa and the first casino in the state. Golf arrived in Arizona’s Valley of the Sun about 1910, and the first hardy players putted around on bunker oil soaked patches of desert that passed for ‘greens.’ What a difference a century and a bit makes. The locals have it right when they say that from end-to-end, ‘Arizona is the state of golf.’ Well, climate plays its part. On average, the state basks in more than 330 days of sunshine per year. The air is dry. Winter temperatures are mild (the average high temperature January to May is 75.5 F), and rainfall is sparse at just 7.66 inches annually. When the unique desert topography is bathed in the crystalline sunlight just after dawn or just before dusk, it can be one of the most touchingly beautiful landscapes on the planet. Decades of hosting visiting city slickers have elevated Arizona golf resort hospitality to an art form. The game of golf and the truly ‘recreation’ aspects of spas, luxurious accommodations, and superb cuisine are brought together at spectacular resorts like We-Ko-Pa Resort and Conference Center, that also offers truly arresting views of the McDowell Mountains, Red Mountain, Four Peaks, and the Superstitions. There is another bonus at We-Ko-Pa.

Let General Manager Matt Barr explain. “One of the big advantages that we have at We-Ko-Pa is that not only do we have two great golf courses – Cholla and Saguaro – but they are distinctly different. They are by different architects with differing architectural philosophies and are on two distinctly different landscapes. Cholla is a little more target style design. For players not used to desert golf, this is closer to what they envision – going from pod to pod. Saguaro is more of a traditional layout but in a desert setting. “And from the two courses there are different views of different mountain ranges. On Saguaro there are views of the Four Peaks, and on Cholla golfers see more of Red Mountain and McDowell Mountain.” The We-Ko-Pa Resort and Conference Center property is more than 460 acres and the expansive layouts – Cholla 240 acres, Saguaro 220 acres – create a wonderful sense of isolation. The golf courses have 140 acres of turf. Cholla opened in December 2001; Saguaro in December 2006. Last December the resort staged a simultaneous 15th and 10th anniversary. For the traveling golfer, the names Coore and Crenshaw are like a homing device. Here the beeping is loud and clear. Ben Crenshaw called it ‘bony old ground,’ really raw desert where he and Bill Coore created Saguaro. The fairways are wider, a little more forgiving than on Cholla, designed by the renowned Scott Miller, but the greens are tougher – a Coore-Crenshaw trademark. Miller’s Cholla was great, but the basic bones needed upgrading, and there was a need for a nip and tuck.

Cholla # 17

Saguaro #14

Last year the resort completed a full $1.8 million renovation of the Cholla course. All the bunkers were dug out and all the drainage replaced, and the bunkers filled in with a blend of tan and white silica to match the Saguaro bunkers. (Bright white sand is not a good idea in sun-drenched Arizona). All 18 greens were replaced with Tif Dwarf Bermuda, again to match Saguaro’s. Nearly 2,000 irrigation heads, and all the controllers for those heads, were replaced. Almost seven acres of turf – areas that really didn’t come into play – was removed and replaced with native plants. Between the upgraded irrigation system and the turf removal, Barr estimates a savings of up to 12 million gallons of irrigation water annually. “Although we have access to the tribal river running through the property [the Verde River that runs from the north and joins with the Salt River], we thought it would be environmentally responsible to do the project,” he explained. The most dramatic of the changes is probably the 8th hole, a spectacular sweeping 605-yard dogleg right down a steep slope. In the original, heroic (or almost) second shots were severely penalized by an arroyo and native cacti swath that stretched across in front of the green. That ‘hazard’ is now a somewhat forgiving grassed slope that can keep balls, and rounds, in play. It is still a challenging— and very picturesque – second shot for anyone willing to try it. The green is walled on the left along a bunker that would be wonderful to plunk into rather than catch a rock edge; any ricochet is a guaranteed lost ball. Right is no bargain either. But now there is a lay up area. Cholla has some great par threes. One that sticks out is #14. It’s a short downhill hole – 177 yards from the tips, 138 yards from the

20 Golf Vacations • April 2017

forward tee – with Four Peaks Mountain in the background. There are six teeing grounds, with the target a large palette-shaped tiered green with bunkers left and back right. It’s visually dramatic and fun to challenge. The 10 par 4s are all solid, ranging from the welcoming 351-yard #1 to the daunting 472-yard #16. In fact, the three closing holes are superb. The 17th is a challenging 578-yard par 5 that runs along a ridge that drops off on the right and doglegs left. The aiming bunker on the left edge is 264 yards from the back tee, 218 yds. from the white tee, 118 from the forward tee. The narrow lay-up area is guarded by bunkers on either side; the green by three bunkers including a pot bunker on the left. The 18th is a dramatic 432-yard par 4 offering the option of laying up in front of the water on the right, or going for the narrowed fairway left of the water. Both routes leave exacting approaches to a challenging green. Saguaro is visually stunning throughout, the lush fairways and greens in stark contrast to the surrounding desert. From the back tees, some carries are daunting, but Coore and Crenshaw offer four tees on each hole. The par 5 14th is a good example. From the Saguaro tees the split-fairway design plays 538 yards, and just 433 yards from the green tees. But from each tee, the choice between laying up to the short right hand fairway and leaving a long second shot, or driving it down the left fairway for a risk-reward chance at a birdie, makes it a fun hole. At Saguaro, the par 3s are also superb and tough. The 15th plays at 255 yards from the tips, though it is downhill, and a smooth 114 from the green tees. The 18th is an excellent long par 4 (508 yards from the back tees, 470 yards from the whites, 411 yards from the greens) making for a dramatic finish. (At both courses, the Compos-

ite Tee configuration is a fun way to play.) Cholla and Saguaro are contrasting, yes, but each stands alone as a wonderful golf course. The renovations and upgrades at We-Ko-Pa didn’t stop at the course.

to light greys. There is now a refined feel with the new décor and lighting for evenings, but it retains the casual and comfortable postround atmosphere.

In addition to the 246 contemporary guestrooms and suites at the Resort, new Golf Suites are now available as a convenient and comfortable lodging option for stay-and-play vacations. Each of the four newly designed golf-themed suites accommodates four to five guests in two deluxe rooms connected by a living room with a pullout sofa and kitchen.

The Casino itself, besides all the games, offers a selection of options including the all-you-can eat Red Rock Buffet, Noodles Sushiya, the Silver Platter for burgers and shakes, and the New York Deli. At the resort, the Ahnala Mesquite Room has been remodeled and now has a more casual feel with a blue and green color palette, golf course art, and a very creative and enticing menu from an array of appetizers to terrific steaks and other fine entrees.

“The Golf Suites are ideal for anything from casual buddy trips to corporate outings,” said general manager Barr. “They allow groups to gather together after the round and continue the fun in a spacious, comfortable setting.” Other options include the Grille at the Clubhouse that was renovated last fall moving away from the traditional desert terra cotta schematic

Whichever option you choose, it’s a good time to think back over the round, the spectacular views, and plan the next day. When you walk off either course, it is almost impossible to resist setting up a tee time on the other one. http://www.wekoparesortandconferencecenter.com

f a relaxing getaway to a beachfront resort in Southwest Florida sounds appealing, you should head to The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. Featuring a truly beautiful setting on the pristine soft white-sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, the AAA Four-Diamond resort recently completed the dramatic renovation -- almost reinvention -- of its championship golf course. Completed in November 2016, the $9 million total redesign of the resort’s course was done by golf icon and acclaimed course designer Jack Nicklaus in collaboration with renowned course architect John Sanford. Not a golfer? Certainly not a problem. Set on 125 lush acres, the picturesque beachfront resort also features an impressive array of other on-site recreational options. In fact, the resort is Southwest Florida’s only beachfront resort with a championship golf course, a world-class spa, and an award-winning tennis center all on-site. Want more reason to visit? The resort is offering the 3rd night free for stays June 1-September 30, 2017. Making it even more appealing, the resort has spent more than $50 million in impressive renovations and enhancements over the last few years, in addition to the golf course. Among the many enhancements was the replacement of the brick balconies in its main Tower Building with beautiful glass balconies in November 2015 to showcase the gorgeous Gulf views. In addition, guests always benefit from no resort fees, complimentary valet parking and self-parking, and complimentary access to the resort’s fitness center. For more information or for reservations, call (800) 237-7600 or (239) 261-2222 and ask for the special “Summer In Paradise Promotion.” Or, visit NaplesBeachHotel.com , specifically the “Specials” section on the website. Note that the offer is based on availability, with holiday weekends excluded, and blackout dates may apply. The promotion may not be combined with any other offer, and is not applicable to groups. Taking advantage of this appealing offer is a great way to experience the resort’s beautifully redesigned par-71 golf course. Featuring five tees, ranging from 4,800 yards to over 6,900 yards, the course was redesigned to challenge the best players but also be enjoyable for all golfers. In addition, the resort added a 300-yard practice and teaching range, and has new golf carts with GPS tracking systems to aid golfers with yardages on each hole, thus helping pace of play. If golf is not your game, there are many other appealing options on site. This includes the resort’s world-class spa, which offers an impressive array of relaxing massages, refreshing body treatments, restorative facials, manicures, pedicures, and salon services. Featuring nine individual spa treatment rooms, The Spa has separate women’s and men’s relaxation areas and locker rooms, saunas, steam rooms, whirlpool baths, a fitness center, an aerobics studio, and a full-service salon. Among the many enticing services offered are the Signature Medley Massage, Aroma-Reflexology, Hot Stone Massage, Essential Facial, Express Mud Detoxifying Body Wrap, Lemon Verbena Body Polish, and Tropical Glow Sugar Scrub. Complemented by seven miles of pristine white-sand beach, the resort also features a beachfront pool complex with two pools, whirlpools and locker facilities; the Mary C. Watkins Tennis Center with six Har-Tru courts; Beach Kids Club, a complimentary daily recreational program for children ages 5 to 12; beach rentals; and retail shops. In addition, the resort also offers multiple restaurants and lounges. This includes: the signature beachfront restaurant HB’s on the Gulf, featuring indoor and outdoor dining; Broadwell’s restaurant, overlooking the golf course,

SWEETSTUFF T

itleist has upped it game considerably with the release of its new Pro V1 line of golf balls—making the most popular golf ball even better. The Pro V1 and the Pro V1x have both been markedly improved in their new versions for 2017 as distance and feel have been added to both models—so choosing one over the other is more difficult— but the tradeoffs are less pronounced. Probably the biggest difference is in the Pro V1x. Always known as a longer ball with a little less fell, this four-piece ball is even longer now with its ZG Process Dual Core and a new spherically tiled 328 tetrahedral dimple design that produces a high trajectory and consistent ball flight. It’s slightly firmer feel compared with the Pro V1 is now a lot softer and delivers more control around the green, but the increased distance of this ball—especially with the irons—is apparent on full shots. For the new Pro V1--which in the past was the ball you went to for maximum feel around the greens, but giving up a little in the distance category—the distance is greatly improved as it has been reengineered with a Next Generation 2.0 ZG Process Core that delivers longer distance on all shots through lower long game spin and faster ball speed, while maintaining the very soft feel and superior short-game performance that Pro V1 players have been used to. A new spherically tiled 352 tetrahedral dimple design produces a penetrating trajectory with even more consistent flight. Both models feature advances in dimple design and manufacturing process advances—especially when it comes to the Urethane Elastomer cover that seems to be more durable. More consistent flight is the result, and these balls perform very well— even in windy conditions. “Every time we set out to develop new Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls, our challenge is to set an even higher benchmark for golf ball performance,” said Michael Mahoney, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “We are constantly in the field talking to golfers of all skill levels about what we can do to help them shoot lower scores. At the same time, the Titleist Golf Ball R&D and Operations teams are

working together to develop new golf ball technologies that deliver performance golfers may not yet realize they need. It’s because of this ownership and commitment at every step of the process that we’re able to deliver meaningful performance improvements and make the best golf balls in the game even better.” Titleist is recommending that players try both versions of the Pro V1—since the old feel versus distance tradeoff is certainly not as great—and the difference comes back more to what feels better to each individual player and the varied trajectory that you get with each one. “No matter their playing ability, golfers have a simple choice when it comes to choosing the best golf ball for their game,” said Bill Morgan, Senior Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball R&D. “Either Pro V1 or Pro V1x will give you the best opportunity to shoot your lowest score. The decision purely comes down to flight, feel and spin. As we’ve told the pros, while you may consider yourself a ‘V’ or an ‘X’ player, we think this is a great time for you to reevaluate both Pro V1 and Pro V1x to see which 2017 model is the best fit for your game.” The rigorous testing and validation process for the 2017 Pro V1 and Pro V1x included more than 80,000 golfers of all skill levels who received numerous iterations of prototypes throughout the two-year development process. This included six different doubleblind prototype tests during the summer and fall of 2015 that were instrumental in determining the final 2017 designs. On the professional level, the validation for the improvements was immediate during final testing at the end of last year. Former Masters champion Adam Scott was impressed immediately: “I think the remarkable thing with the new Pro V1 is how far it goes now. I’m hitting it longer than I ever have but I also have that soft feel like when I grew up playing a balata golf ball – it’s incredibly soft.” Jordan Spieth, who already owns two major victories, won the first time he put it in play: “I put the new Pro V1x in play in Australia and in the first week we won. What I noticed immediately was the improved flight. It held its line in the crosswinds better.” For more information: www.titleist.com.

eing able to read out of sunglasses is an age-old problem (in more ways than one) that has finally gotten some new attention by a company that has been making distinctive, high-quality reading glasses for 15 years. Eyebobs has been at the forefront of making reading glasses that have a fashion flair, high quality and an exceptional value--and now has a line of All Day Reader Sun Styles that are perfect for golf and many other recreational activities. The biggest complaint that most golfers have with their sunglasses is that they must take them off to read anything—like a scorecard— especially players older than 40 years old who need help for reading. With the new eyebob Reader Sun Styles, the no-line progressive lenses are 100% UV protected and feature your selected reading magnification at the bottom, a mid-range in the center for tablets, phones or other devices, and a non-magnified area on top for when you don’t need a reader at all. These high-quality lenses make it so natural to see distance and then look down to read a phone or scorecard without having to take off sunglasses or put on reading glasses. These are at the forefront of the trend in reading glasses today that are going away from the lens with a line at the bottom to the three-stage progression lens that feels more natural for most wearers of glasses. “There’s no more scrambling to find your glasses when you need to read the scorecard or GPS device and taking them off when you don’t,” noted eyebobs’ CEO Michael Magerman. “With eyebobs new All Day Readers Sun you can leave them on all day long.”

The eyebobs All Day Reader Sun collection includes seven frame styles including: Board Stiff, Butch, Laid, TV Party, Case Closed, Turbulence and The Graduate. The All-Day Readers feature optical quality handmade frames, ophthalmic polycarbonate lenses and flexible spring hinges for added comfort and durability. They are available in magnifications from +1.25 – 3.50 and have an anti-reflective coating that is a nice extra. The hard-shell case and cleaning cloth is designed for easy and secure use for travel and on the course. For more information, check out the web site at: www.eyebobs.com
