This publication is a source of information for members and sponsors on what is happening at National and State levels and is also an opportunity for GMA members to be involved in the publication. If your club or a club that you know of is doing something interesting, unique or exceptionally well, please send information through to me so that the successes can be shared amongst all GMA managers.

Dear Members, Welcome to the 2nd edition of the GMA E-Magazine.

We would like to thank all those managers that took the time to send in feedback after our inaugural issue.

Planning for our 2017 GMA Conference, under the eye of Conference Coordinator Andrew Gay, is progressing well and we will begin to release information surrounding the program in early next year.

The 2017 conference is sure to be bigger and better than in 2015, with the wonderful facilities of the Adelaide Convention Centre and surrounding hotels, allowing us great flexibility in the use of spaces, sponsor engagement and the number of delegates that can be accommodated.

While we are heading into the final days of November, Christmas is fast approaching and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all managers and their families a safe and merry Christmas.

We would like to congratulate GMA Members Gregg Chapple (Kingston Heath – World Cup) and Paul Hinton (Royal Sydney – the Australian Open) on successfully hosting two major tournaments. It is great to see so many top ranked players participating in this summer of golf and we hope that it continues to spark interest and create a new generation of golfers that love this great game as much as we all do.

VICTORIA FORTY-FIVE GMV MANAGERS AND SPONSORS RECENTLY ATTENDED THE STATE CONFERENCE HELD AT THE EASTERN GOLF CLUB WHERE THE ASSEMBLED DELEGATES EXPERIENCED AT FIRST HAND THE NEW FACILITIES IN YERING Unquestionably, the cabin style accommodation and clubhouse facilities make for an outstanding venue for functions including conferences, and the associated 27-holes designed by Greg Norman will make The Eastern Golf Club an enormously popular venue of choice.

The conference theme was Work, Life – Balance and the organising committee created a program that focused on equipping our lives better.

Monday morning was a nice early start organised by Oli Yourn of FITGOLF, with a brisk walk in teams with each team being responsible for collecting the ingredients to prepare their breakfast on return to the main cabin.

Having registered to play on the Sunday prior to the two-day conference, the delegates were almost literally blown off the course when damaging winds caused havoc throughout Victoria.

As the delegates tucked into the healthy breakfast they had prepared using the food collected, Katherine Shone presented on the importance of healthy nutrition.

Taking respite from the conditions within the Eastern clubhouse, the managers took time out to receive reports of damage at their clubs with a number needing to return to the clubs to manage the clean-up requirements before returning to the conference.

After breakfast we adjourned to the clubhouse for our first session with the theme of “living and working with body, heart, mind and spirit” being presented by Stuart Taylor from the Resilience Institute. Stuart presented a compelling argument leaving delegates with much to think about in terms of the realities of life.

At the opening dinner, Craig Kelly regaled the audience with an insight into his career as an AFL footballer, and moreover, as a player manager of renown.

As a member of Huntingdale Golf Club, Craig empathised with the audience comparing member expectations with management and governance realities, with his presentation resonating the importance of meeting expectations.

VICTORIA Following lunch, Steve Herzberg took the podium and presented on “High performing teams and Successful networking”. Steve is a highly regarded speaker on leadership, and having presented previously at GMA events, his lectures better equip managers to perform their roles.

Late in the afternoon Greg Oakford, Marketing and Communications Manager at Golf Victoria, gave an excellent skill set presentation on “digital marketing in 2016”.

After the conference Greg received many follow-up enquires resulting in him conducting a webinar on Facebook’s “Business Manager”.

When accepting a gift in appreciation of his service, Gregg spoke of the tragic loss of our esteemed member Paul Rak, and reminded the members of the conference theme and how important it is to balance the demands of our workload and busy lives.

Our last speaker was the leading microbiologist Dr Mary Cole. Mary presented a thought-provoking paper about how important it is that we reduce the use of water and chemicals in our course management practices and agriculture in general.

Tuesday morning was the occasion of the GMV Annual General Meeting at which Gregg Chapple stood down after four years as President. Taking the chair was Peter Busch, and Anthony White joined the executive.

Notably Mary referred to the excellent work being done in this area at clubs including Yarra Yarra and Leongatha, who are currently working to improve their soil health.

NEW SOUTH WALES GMA NSW PRESENTS FIRST FELLOW MEMBERSHIP GMA NSW has announced the presentation of its first three Fellows – Bill Francis, Paul Hinton and David Burton – at its recent Annual General Meeting.

In 2014, the Annual General Meeting of the Association introduced Fellow Membership status to give increased recognition to those managers who have shown longterm commitment to the industry, their clubs and most importantly GMA NSW. The GMA NSW Board recently agreed to recognise the first three members by elevating them to Fellow status following a review and recommendation from GMA Life Member Graham Christian and Vice President Cathy Neagle.

In reviewing the nominations, they were unanimous that the three nominees for the award had met the criteria of a high standard of professional conduct, displaying exemplary commitment to their clubs and a long term distinguished service to GMA NSW of at least ten years membership, including serving on the Board of the organisation.

It is hoped through this recognition that other members of GMA will strive to emulate these awardees by embarking on a similar high profile commitment to the organisation and the industry.

Bill Francis has had 28 years in golf management.

He commenced in November 1988 at Royal Sydney Golf Club as the accountant, before taking on roles as Assistant Manager and General Manager (8 years), before moving on to Pymble Golf Club as General Manager for a further seven years. He moved to Bonnie Doon Golf Club in November 2012 and recently retired from there in November 2016.

Bill joined GMA in 1993 and was almost immediately co-opted onto committees to assist with finances.

He joined the Board proper in 1997 and became the long standing Treasurer until 2006 when he assumed the role of President on the retirement of GMA Life Member Graham Christian.

During his stint as President Bill was part of a group which worked on developing the model for GMA National.

Paul Hinton has been General Manager at Royal Sydney Golf Club, the site of this year’s Australian Open title, for the past 11 years. After initially studying hotel management in Brisbane, Paul has marked out an impressive career in hospitality and golf course management.

He worked his initial five years with what is now Intercontinental Hotels as a hotel trainee manager to banquet manager, followed by two years with Sheraton in Sales and International reservation.

He then spent two years at Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland as Head Sommelier and Assistant Restaurant Manager, and followed up with five years at exclusive hotels and golf clubs in various senior roles at Pennyhill Park, including Manor House Golf Club General Manager.

Paul has been a member of GMA NSW since taking up the role at Royal Sydney, spending six years on the Board and three as President.

NEW SOUTH WALES David Burton is well known to many GMA members for his role both at a State and National level, which last year culminated in him receiving Life Membership status of the National Body.

David has been a member of GMA for more than 20 years, during which time he has been General Manager of the NSW Golf Club. He was Treasurer of GMA NSW for more than eight years and was involved in development of three strategic plans.

David worked closely with Bill Francis when NSW last hosted the national conference in 2005 prior to GMA National being formed, and has presented NSW Golf Club as the host venue for many a conference and functions.

He has also been a strong mentor for numerous new managers to the industry, and is still serving on the NSW Board where he is involved with strategic planning and promotion of industry tools such as benchmarking.

GMA WORKSHOP PRESENTATION: MEET THE MODERN GOLF INDUSTRY CUSTOMER The Australian Golf Industry Council recently completed the most in-depth analysis of the Australian golf industry ever undertaken. The research identifies the key changes in the golf industry since 2005, as well as emerging consumer demands, which will allow the golf industry to capitalise on a range of opportunities.

GMA NSW recently hosted a workshop with Danny Bowerin, the Marketing Director of GA, to present the outcomes from the research to allow clubs to better understand and engage current and potential golf participants, and to ensure relevance of the sport for future generations.

PACE OF PLAY WORKSHOP PRESENTATION GMA NSW, in conjunction with Golf Industry Central (GIC), recently hosted a Pace of Play workshop. GIC has been providing industry news, jobs and operational advice throughout Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia since 2008.

The workshop presenter Bill Yates, known as “the Guru of Pace of Play,� has made a commitment to helping golf courses deliver quality play to every player in every group, day after day. For more than 25 years he has demonstrated that any course can eliminate the problems associated with slow play and give both public and private golfers a smooth, high value playing experience.

FLYING THE FLAG FOR GOLF

Q

antas Frequently Flyer members are enjoying being able to play more and more golf via the Qantas Golf Club (QGC).

The QGC continues to build relationships with golf courses around Australia to encourage its members to play more golf.

As a result, courses are enjoying increased revenue and exposure through tee times via the QGC booking portal, Open Days and the Challenge Series events.

The courses participating in the program include some of the country’s most private golf courses through to semi private courses, resorts and public access courses.

While this unique program continues to evolve, in early 2016 a comprehensive review of its membership base was completed to gain a greater understanding of the members wants.

Overall, the objective of the review was to gain a greater understanding of how members were using the QGC, what works and doesn’t work and what they would like to see in the future.

We also questioned members in regards to the value they were seeking from their QGC membership. The following results outline the differences between our paid and unpaid membership options.

PREMIUM MEMBERS

These members indicated that the key value of program for them is the ability to compete in events (26%), followed by course access (19%) and equally value (19%). The appeal of a Golf Link Handicap ranked fourth in the research at 16%, and the majority of handicaps that have been taken up have been from members taking up a handicap for the first time ¬– not transferring from another golf club.

FREE MEMBERS For free members the most appealing aspect was that they believed that the program was good for golfers.

In other words, the QGC offered a pathway into golf (this ranked the highest at 32%). Features and benefits ranked a close second (29%) with golf course access being their third valued feature (14%). This indicated that free members are looking for easier ways to navigate playing more golf. Interestingly good deals rated relatively down the desire list at just 6%. This would indicate that members are looking for ease of access well ahead of price.

Armed with the survey results and mindful of QGC’s overarching objective of partnering with golf clubs to assist in our mutual quest to grow the game of golf, QGC set out to enhance the program. QGC wanted to better align the program with what its members valued as well as opportunities for participating golf clubs to generate more green fee revenue.

The member review included an on-line survey, a range of focus groups as well as one-on-one sessions. The findings have been instrumental in guiding the recent enhancements to the QGC program. A number of key findings for golf clubs included: •

90%+ of QGC membership base are in the Free Category

•

Just 0.9% of Premium members have taken up the handicap option, 13.5% have a different home club and 84% haven’t taken up the handicap option.

•

The major member hubs include 31.4% of QGC members living in NSW, 23.6% in Victoria and 19.9% in Queensland.

•

The majority of tee times are being booked by Free members who don’t have a Golf Link handicap (39%), followed by Premium Members with a Golf Link handicap (31%), the Free with a Golf Link handicap (21%).

NATIONAL The QGC continues to be very mindful and respectful of the values, traditions and commercial realties of golf clubs around Australia, and its latest enhancements have been developed based on feedback it has received from both members and golf clubs since launch.

A number of new initiates have been developed to assist in getting more QGC members to golf clubs around Australia, with an emphasis on developing a range of engagement methods that can be tailored to suit each clubs requirements. A couple the key enhancements include:

GOLF CONCIERGE

The Golf Concierge has been designed to connect QGC members with golf clubs that have a typical guest policy, however may not wish to have tee times published on the QGC tee time booking portal.

Clubs have the ability to market their golf club to our members in a subtle fashion while also allowing clubs to add filters such as geographic location, handicap frequency of play and time of play. The Golf Concierge is the perfect way for clubs to generate more guest play revenue when and how they would like it.

Qantas Golf Club members are really enjoying their tee times being booked on their behalf, as well as the bonus of earning Qantas Points every time they play.

OPEN DAYS

QGC members expressed interest in meeting other golfers. The Open Days create a win-win for both QGC members and Golf Clubs alike. Golf Clubs are able to host Open Days during their quieter periods to drive

green fee play while QGC members get to play some great golf courses and meet more golfers.

For golf clubs, hosting Open Days is simple. The golf club makes a minimum of five tee times available to Qantas Members via the Qantas Tee time portal, QGC then market your golf club’s event to its QGC members. Golfers will earn Qantas Points by playing in the Open day and Qantas will also offer 5,000 Qantas Points to the winner of the Open Day. The Open Days are gaining great momentum around Australia. Golf clubs are enjoying the opportunity to gain more green fee players during low play periods while generating ancillary revenue through the ProShop and the Bar. QGC members continue to flock to the Challenge Series events, with the final leg of the 14 event series being played in Yarra Yarra in early November. The winning team of two from each of the events is now off on an all expenses paid golf trip to compete in the Challenge Series Final in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Through the Challenge Series and Open Days, the QGC has quickly become one of the larger contributors of corporate golf revenue to golf clubs.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA MOUNT OSMOND GOLF CLUB GENERAL MANAGER, MARK TAN, WAS PRESENTED WITH THE GMASA EXCELLENCE IN GOLF CLUB MANAGEMENT AT A GALA DINNER FOR THE SA GOLF INDUSTRY AWARDS NIGHT HELD AT ADELAIDE OVAL LAST MONTH.

Nominations for this award were sought from the Club Captains or Presidents with the following used as a basis for selection:

• The Clubs achievements in the past 12 months, and in particular those above and

beyond the normal role of a General Manager; • Tenure at their Club; • Their level of respect amongst their industry peers (Fellow GMA Members/General Managers); • Any contribution to the Golf Industry above and beyond their Club Role; • Involvement with GMASA events and programs.

GMASA Life Member, Paul Sutcliffe, in his presentation acknowledged that the award “takes into account many factors of activities and responsibilities of a Golf Club Manager. These include the knowledge and understanding of the needs of the Club.”

He went on to say that “this is vital in the balance between the expectations of Club Members and the importance of raising additional revenue, through the use of the Club facilities by outside organisations and the public, when not in use by the members.”

On the award selection, he noted that Tan had “exhibited all these skills and, in addition, has a well-balanced view of the job and family.” Sutcliffe also congratulated Tan on his work in maintaining and increasing club membership numbers at Mount Osmond.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY AWARD In the Monit Workplace Health & Safety Award, South Lakes General Manager, Mark Crowe, accepted his award from Paul Sutcliffe.

The award recognises a business that demonstrates a pro-active and live commitment to ensuring that not only do they meet their legislative requirements, but are truly concerned about the health and safety of all their workers, contractors, sub-contractors, volunteers and members.

In announcing the award, Sutcliffe noted that South Lakes “upon inspection, particularly impressed with its system of recording staff training, clubhouse and green-keeping operations, electrical and fire prevention and public evacuation procedures and the like.�

Crowe thanked his predecessor, Alan Tarry, for the work undertaken in establishing many of the policies and procedures that are now in place at the Club.

Recently GMA was contacted by Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and the following information provides for an interesting way in which clubs can utilise the workforce and expertise that CVA has to assist clubs to enhance their native vegetation and management in an extremely affordable manner.

Conservation Volunteers is a not-for-profit, non-political, non-advocacy community based organisation dedicated to connecting people with nature. Over the past few years we have mobilised two million hours of volunteer time, planted two million trees and achieved significant and demonstrable conservation and social outcomes.

THE BENEFITS OF ENGAGING CVA ARE MANIFOLD BUT INCLUDE: 1.

The raising of awareness in the local community of the important role that golf courses play in the local natural environment. The provision of natural refuges and corridors for wildlife ,particularly endangered woodland bird species, in the urban environment.

2.

The building of local community pride and support for these important assets.

3.

The enabling of ongoing maintenance and improvement of the “rough” areas of a course in a controlled and cost effective manner.

4.

The exposure of the clubs to new markets eg corporate and international volunteers.

5.

The strengthening and brokering of local partnerships and community support.

6.

Increasing the sustainability and environmental health of the bushland and rough areas of a course including track creation and maintenance.

7.

The forming of strong partnerships for seeking project funds through joint application for Govt, philanthropic and corporate grant opportunities.

In the first instance CVA would propose an annual 12 day engagement package. The calendar of projects would be determined consistent with the clubs existing calendar and requirements. These days may be delivered in groups of two or more consecutive days or as a single day per month.

The project teams would consist of a qualified Team Leader, 6 – 8 participants (selected from local community, international and corporate volunteers and interested club members), vehicle, trailer, all relevant insurances, safety systems and required hand tools.

The investment required from a participating club would be $12000 + GST if applicable.

After Lunch multiply Olympian Jamie Dwyer from the Hockeyroos gave a presentation on providing a work/ life balance. It was a great insight into Jamie’s Olympic preparation, stories from playing in the Olympics and tough times working his way back into the Australian side.

STATE CONFERENCE The GMA WA State conference was held at Albany Golf Club on the 18th & 19th September and was well attended by GMA WA members. The state dinner was held on Saturday the 17th September and provided a great opportunity for the delegates to socialise prior to the conference starting the following day.

In the afternoon James Wilkinson and Grant ShortlandJones gave a presentation on their recent trip to New Zealand to attend the NZ Golf Industry Conference. The day was concluded with a talk from Marco Pinares who is the chief wine maker from Ferngrove wines. Marco brought some of his wines for tasting, which was well received and a great way to conclude the formalities of the day.

The conference started with Karen Giles, CEO of Clubs WA, giving an overview of the new incorporations association changes. Then Gary Thomas, CEO of Golf WA, followed by a presentation from MiClub on how Clubs can help themselves. After morning tea we headed into work health and safety with Tanya Barrett from Safety Alert, who went through hazard checklists and covered the powers of Worksafe inspectors.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS The final of the 2016 GMA WA Matchplay Championship was contested at the Albany GC links on the Monday after the state conference. The combatants were GMA WA Captain Troy O’Hern and Clarke Osborne from the Point Walter Golf facility.

In a tight contest that went all the way to the 19th hole, Clarke outlasted Troy to claim victory. Congratulations to Clarke.

BILLIE FRIEDNLANDER TROPHY The biennial GMA WA Championship for the Billie Friedlander Trophy was contested concurrently with the Matchplay final, which included the Clarke Osborne and Troy O’Hern matchplay final. Gary Thomas, CEO of Golf WA, did point out that you are unable to play in two competitions at once, however this was quickly dismissed by GMA WA Captain Troy O’Hern!

In difficult conditions, with an icy wind blowing directly from the Antarctic, the scores weren’t particularly high. However President Brad Dawson handled the conditions better than the rest to be crowned champion for the second time with a solid winning score of 34 points. Congratulations Brad.

GMANZ CONFERENCE Two members of GMA WA – James Wilkinson from Gosnells Golf and Grant Shortland Jones from Mandurah Country Club, attended the New Zealand Golf Industry Conference, which was held in Wellington from the 28th to the 30th of August.

The conference was well attended by the NZ delegates and included fellow Aussies GMA President Stewart Fenton and Executive Officer John Stamp. Unfortunately the night before the conference started the Wallabies were smashed by the All Blacks and this was noted by every conference speaker over the preceding two days.

The theme of the conference was ‘Delivering Golf’ and there were many great speakers with the highlights being former Deputy CEO of Air New Zealand, Norm Thompson, talking about the culture of change; NZ Golf CEO Dean Murphy on the challenges facing the industry and how they are trying to grow the game; New Zealand Rugby CEO, Steve Tew, on the challenges facing Rugby NZ and Stu McMullin, director of Hells Pizza, who provided an insight into the marketing of a product that change the way New Zealanders view pizza.

After the conference both James and Grant enjoyed two amazing days on the golf course playing at Parparumu Golf Club and Cape Kidnappers.

PGAIGI BURSARY Update from the Winner – Brendan Kop I have been enjoying the study, albeit I haven’t invested a lot of time over the past eight weeks due to an overseas trip to Europe. However, I will be back into the swing of things this week.

Thus far I have found the course to be very well put together and easy to navigate via the online ‘Fairway’ platform. The Fairway is very user friendly and has excellent tracking of unit completion as you work through it (even if I am a little behind).

The PGA staff has been fantastic with their communication of various upcoming webinar activity, and they provide a sense of ‘being there’ despite the course being conducted in a virtual environment.

I have found the content very relevant to my role as GM and it has assisted the club with our planning of events and business review.

Since its inception in 1987, Greg Norman Golf Course Design has been one of my true passions in both business and life.

My experience playing many of the world’s great golf courses over a 25-year career served as a catalyst to develop this interest in golf course design. Over the years I have been influenced by many different classical and modern architects, but I particularly identify with the old masters, A.W. Tillinghast and Alister MacKenzie.

My design philosophy is grounded in a “least disturbance approach” that blends golf courses with their surrounding environment to enhance the properties’ natural features. This is something both Tillinghast and MacKenzie achieved, not only because they lacked the tools and resources to move a large volume of earth, but because they chose to work with the topography of the land. Given they both worked with the land, essentially their philosophy was unique to each course they designed, which is a premise I adopted into my own philosophy. As a result, GNGCD has been an industry leader in promoting sustainability and the compatibility of golf courses with the environment, with many of our projects having been awarded the coveted Audubon Society Award for environmental stewardship.

I like to “begin with the end in mind” on each and every project and I pride myself on creating courses that blend seamlessly with their surroundings and appear as if they have been part of the landscape for generations.

With rapid development often times comes legitimate environmental concerns. With seven billion people on our planet, the earth’s resources can be strained. We believe that we have a responsibility to our customers, to the communities and the environment in which we have a presence. This means sustainability is the only acceptable model for our business.

My design team and I have opened 100 courses in 34 countries across six continents. Because each design bears my name, I personally make it my mission to get involved with every step of the design process, from walking the virgin site, to planning and construction, to opening day.

One such recent opening, which was a momentous occasion, was the grand opening of our 100th golf course at Eastern Golf Club in Yering. Celebrating this milestone in Australia gave me particular satisfaction, and I am thrilled to continue to expand the GNGCD footprint in Australia and grow the game in ways never thought possible.

A key focus for GNGCD in Australia is our ReDesign program with a Renovate, Restore, Reposition and Rebrand approach. Since many golf courses lose their unique character and original strategic elements over time, it is GNGCD’s mission to update these courses to higher design standards while focusing on capital expenditures and lowering future operating costs.

A great example of recent redesign success story is The Grange East which reopened in 2014 after only 15 months of work. Prior to the revitalization, the East course was viewed as the inferior of the two courses by members. After extensive bunkering and greens work, as well as installing a macro-drainage system that created a sustainable wetland area for runoff, membership has increased and the course has received notable recognition. I am proud to say that The Grange was the first club in Australia to implement the Wetland and Aquifer Storage and Recovery Scheme, which had the dual purposes of securing the club’s future water supply and providing broader community environmental benefits.

Eastern Golf Club took a different approach by relocating their club, but they have also achieved tremendous success evident in their 300-person membership waiting list. When the club managers determined their land had become extremely valuable and decided to relocated, GNGCD assisted in finding the new site and obtaining the proper permits in addition to our work in design and construction. I am pleased to announce that on October 1, the final nine holes will open, completing the 27-hole course.

Above all else, the GNGCD competitive advantage is the ability to differentiate in the market by leveraging the global power of my name and the Greg Norman brand, and creating value for clients in the design-build arena.

SANDY CREEK GOLF CLUB has been name the 2016 Club of the Year - Regional Small at the Clubs SA Awards for Excellence.

The state-wide awards recognise outstanding achievement and service across a number of categories and were presented at a gala dinner at Adelaide Oval in early October.

The award is a fitting accolade for the Club which has undergone some significant changes in recent times, including a change in name, and is now making its mark as one of the premier clubs in the State.

Sandy Creek Golf Club General Manager David Rice said “It’s fantastic to see the Club recognised at this level, as well as the tireless work of so many people that have contributed to this success. The turn-around is significant, from a Club that just a few years ago was facing a very uncertain future.”

David, who joined the Club in 2015, attributes the turn-around in fortunes to the appointment of PGA Professional Brayden Wauchope (from Royal Adelaide GC) in 2013, followed by some very important strategic decisions made by a new and energised committee.

“In a Club with such a rich history (dating back to 1904) change is often difficult, but change was exactly what was needed. The changes at the Club have been driven by a unified team and would not have happened without the overwhelming support of the majority of our members, who have embraced the exciting new direction we are taking.”

One of the key changes at the Club has been a change in name from Gawler Golf Club to Sandy Creek Golf Club - Barossa Valley, to better reflect the Club’s physical location and its proximity to the world famous Barossa Wine region. In addition the Club has introduced a new, Barossa focussed food and wine

offering and embraced a very strong focus for engaging families and the wider community.

An example of this is the Club’s very successful family fun days and involvement in this year’s Barossa Gourmet Weekend, which included local food, wine, music and a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids. “While golf is our core business we are looking at ways to engage families and utilise our facilities outside of golf also. We want to make our Club and the game of golf more accessible for families and for those who are time poor, so providing an environment where the whole family can enjoy a day out is key”, said David.

The award for Club of the Year is the highest accolade presented at the Clubs SA Awards for Excellence.

However, Sandy Creek Golf Club was also a finalist in the categories for Sports Club of the Year, Best Club Operations, Best Dining Experience and Volunteer of the Year.

David said, “Making it to the finalist stage for so many categories is a reflection of how much work has gone into improving the Club and our offering. At an operational level we have achieved a 93% turn around in our financial result in just 12 months, largely thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers.

Gail Sweet and our team of bar volunteers put in countless hours and ask for nothing in return, they have allowed us to reduce our overheads significantly and have been key to our success - it was fantastic to see them all recognised as finalists in the category for Volunteer of the Year.”

It’s certainly been a busy time at the Sandy Creek Golf Club with renovations to their Club House, also achieved through volunteer labour, a new course layout launched in the last month and the Club also in the process of extending the driving range, practice greens and implementing a shortened par 3 course option to encourage junior, social and time poor players to get into the game.

“I think the most satisfying thing about this award is that it is an over-arching award that recognises the work, commitment and the achievements of the whole team - it’s like winning the Premiership as opposed to winning the Brownlow. Everyone that has played a part in the changes and recent success of the Club is acknowledged in this award and everyone should be proud of what has been achieved”, said David.

The future is bright for the Club with many new members and many former members returning to the Club thanks to the new direction. Golf SA, the state golfing body, has also selected Sandy Creek Golf Club as its regional tier 3 coaching hub due to the high level expertise of professional Brayden Wauchope. While an increase in visitor traffic since the re- branding and the support of many new sponsors is also paying dividends.

“Through all these changes it’s been important to preserve our rich history, while making sure we move forward and put ourselves in the best possible position for the future – standing still is not an option.

What has been encouraging is the support of our members who have shown a readiness to embrace change, rather than hamper, they are helping us build a fantastic culture and future for the Club”.

RULES OF GOLF EDUCATION PROGRAM As a golf club manager, it is often expected by members that we know the Rules of Golf. Interestingly just last week a GM of renown, who has never been a golfer, bravely gave a ruling in a match proving the need for management, including golf operations staff, to be across the rules of golf. Fortunately, that GM gave the correct ruling.

Perhaps as an example of being a quintessentially typical golfer I attest to having a reasonable knowledge of the rules but was daunted when asked to undertake rules education program as developed by the R&A. Why was I daunted, because the reality is I knew I was going to be tested on the reality of my actual knowledge? In fairness, I don’t believe I have ever given a ruling or answered a question on the rules without referring to the published rules to verify my accuracy.

So, what was the outcome of undertaking the online program. Yes, it took a couple of hours to undertake the introductory phase, and review the section on etiquette

(which should be compulsory for every golfer) then read the principles of the rules and the subsequent rules of golf which were explained in layman’s fashion equipping me to feel adept enough to have a crack at the actual exam.

Did I pass, well yes but not as comfortably as I would have liked. Although there is nothing to stop the student I elected to test myself by answering the them empirically rather than refer to the rules book.

If nothing else came out of the time spent on this undertaking I am resolved that the more golfers that have a go at the education program the better for all. TWO NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH FOR 2017 PROMOTE PUBLIC TEE TIMES NATIONALLY MiClub’s recently launched TeeNet website is a markedly different tee time booking search engine. TeeNet has no commission fee for clubs and courses and as a non-commercial initiative, no contractual pricing arrangements or onsite advertising. Clubs can now promote public tee times to a broad national market without any additional administration.

TeeNet displays the availability and pricing of public tee times from participating MiClub client clubs and courses.

The actual booking and payment for selected tee times occurs through a club or course’s own website. Clubs then ‘own’ the booking, including the player data and the payment process .

“TeeNet was established to promote MiClub clients’ available public tee times to increase client revenue and course occupancy. Any clubs or courses utilising our timesheet module for public bookings will automatically be promoted on TeeNet through a live feed. It’s a very simple process for clients, with no added administrative burden,” said Peter Maddison, MiClub Managing Director.

FLEXIBLE LIFESTYLE MEMBERSHIP TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN TODAY’S GOLFER Clubs and club members have responded positively to another of MiClub’s new releases – Lifestyle Membership.

Several clubs have introduced Lifestyle Membership as a new revenue source without impacting on existing membership revenue. In particular, Lifestyle Membership has proven to be very effective in stemming resigning members by offering an alternative to full membership.

A new member in this category is provided with a specified number of points. Each time a Lifestyle Member books a tee time, points are deducted from the member’s account. Management of Lifestyle Membership runs automatically through the MiClub timesheet.

“This module will also appeal to members who need to fit golf in around their lifestyle and may be unable to commit to play on a regular basis. It will suit players with family commitments like children’s sport activities or those who work out of town frequently or for long periods of time,” said Peter.
