CLUB MANAGEMENT - BMI INTRODUCTION GMA is committed to providing a diverse range of professional development opportunities, to meet the needs of all its members. GMA in partnership with Golf Australia and the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is excited to offer the first ever Business Management Institute (BMI) program to Australian club managers, with the first module to be delivered in October 2018. The BMI is a professional development program for modern-day club managers, focussing on the core disciplines needed to successfully lead clubs.

THE PROGRAM

2018 BMI

The BMI program contains four modules, each completed in five-day blocks: • BMI Club Management • BMI Leadership Principles • BMI General Manager/Chief Operating Officer • BMI Food & Beverage Management or BMI Course and Golf Management

In 2018, BMI Club Management will be delivered in Melbourne and Sydney.

Each module is broken into sessions adapted to the Australian business operating environment. Sessions are delivered in an open workshop style allowing for regular discussion of managers’ shared experience. Sessions are led by expert facilitators including Professor Geoffrey Dickson, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Latrobe University as our lead facilitator, supported by Dr David Shilbury, Professor of Sport Management and Director of Deakin Sport Network, Deakin University and Dr Jason Koenigsfeld, Senior Vice President of Professional Development at CMAA.

THE FUTURE To enhance the value of the BMI program, GMA members will be on a pathway to obtain CMAA’s ‘Certified Club Management’ (CCM) which recognises the unique skills and special knowledge required of successful club management. BMI modules along with prior learning from past qualifications and other forms of professional development accrue points, which at a certain threshold allow a CCM to be achieved. The CCM qualification is now recognized in 31 countries throughout the world. Details of the CCM qualification process will be advised in coming months following further consultation with industry partners and GMA members.

COURSE TOPICS MEMBERSHIP MARKETING It is often said that clubs are in the subscription business. In addition to exploring membership retention as the starting point to growing a club’s subscription revenue, you will investigate the importance of market segmentation and target marketing in attracting your club’s future members. COMMUNICATIONS Write more effective club communications using the four steps of effective business correspondence. Create and use mind mapping as an effective brainstorming tool and ensure your social media strategy compliments your more traditional member communication channels. PROFESSIONAL IMAGE & PERSONAL BRANDING How do others perceive you? Understanding and improving your personal branding can have a profound impact on your ability to influence stakeholders within your club. CAREER DEVELOPMENT Develop a personal career plan, that allows you to maximise career opportunities. The session will also discuss the employment landscape and how to present the transferrable skills of a modern leader. GOLF OPERATIONS A golf shop is the window to the club. Golf operations must reflect the changing nature of the golf consumer. No longer can golf operations be left entirely to the pro shop staff. A general manager must take an active role to maximise the impact of the golf professional in engaging members whilst leveraging the branding of national golf development programs to attract new participants to the club. FOOD & BEVERAGE This session will look at creating and managing a wine list for your club, including the skill of food and wine matching – followed by a group dinner. SERVICE IN CLUBS Friendly and attentive staff service is the hall mark of a great club member experience. Providing consistent service requires clear procedures and regular staff training. This session explores the keys to excellence in service.

This session explores these reports as well as other financial metrics that track the performance of the club business. COST CONTROL

Geoff Dickson Geoff Dickson

Jason Koenigsfeld Jason Koenigsfeld Geoff Dickson Geoff Dickson

Explore the underlying principles of control and develop procedures for effective control of food & beverage and human resource costs. You will capture the cyclical nature of cost control. MANAGEMENT, DELEGATION & GOVERNANCE The most common club governance model relies on the ‘delegation of authority’ from club members to the board, the board to the general manager, and the general manager to staff. This session will explore this club governance model and how the CMAA’s ‘Management to Leadership model’ enhances the effectiveness of the delegation to the general manager. TIME MANAGEMENT

The measure of an effective club manager is the ability to get the right things done at the right time. Knowing when and how to mobilise strengths for best effect, setting priorities and choosing what in the club to contribute to are all essential to good management. EMPLOYMENT LEGALITIES ISSUES An understanding of human resource and industrial relations law gives managers a sound footing to lead and manage staff effectively. This session examines ways to employ and manage the performance of staff, avoiding some of the most common workplace disputes that can damage reputations and morale. Discussions will have references to the Fair Work Act, and relevant Awards. LUMINA SPARK PORTRAIT Lumina Spark is a personality test that raises your self awareness to help you understand your strengths, how you interact with others and what you should be working on to improve your ability to build effective teams. You will learn practical techniques in order to have more influence across your club. You will leave with a pragmatic personal development goal to work on over the next few months.
