By Rick Surlow

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of playing a round of golf with my daughter. She is a senior in college and rarely plays golf, in spite of some success playing junior golf before discovering volleyball as a young teenager. I happily admit that playing golf with either of my kids is one of the most cherished activities of my life. It also reminds me how often I encourage parents to introduce golf to their kids and take advantage of the wonderful opportunity it affords to spend meaningful, quality time with them in a setting like no other. I mention this for a number of reasons. Chief among them is the unique opportunity golf provides for parents while their kids are growing up. Think about it: where else are you encouraged to play organized sports with your kids? (Touch football on the lawn at Thanksgiving doesn’t qualify.) I was never allowed to play baseball with my son’s team when he played little league, or volleyball with my daughter during her club and school seasons. (And it would not have been a pretty sight if I had.)

Golf, on the other hand, is tailor-made for participation and direct engagement. It’s something you can do on weekends or long summer nights with your kids, even if they’ve got their little league or volleyball scenes going. And by introducing them to golf early in their lives, they may in turn inspire others in spreading the joys to be found in this noble sport. We have seen participation in golf decline in recent years. There are fewer courses to play today than there were five years ago. If this trend were to continue, our options for where and how often to play may decline as well. Helping introduce the next generation to golf is vital to the game’s well-being. But even more important in the short-term is the abundant joy you and your family will know in sharing precious hours together on the wonderful courses we’re fortunate to have available to us here. So grab this guide, grab your kid(s), and go play a course—soon. There’s never any time better.

Tree Lover’s Paradise

You’ll Be Looking Both Out AND Up at Santa Rosa’s Bennett Valley Golf Course by Andrew Hidas

I

f videotape were running on every golf round in the world, one of the most common sights would undoubtedly be golfers looking to the sky, beseeching the heavens for some assistance or permission for a do-over on their latest errant shot.

But there’s another reason to be looking skyward with regularity at Bennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa: the loveliness of its abundant and robust trees, which have matured so nicely since their spindly little beginnings in 1969 that the course is now a living testament to the power of time and the slow-but-steady growth it ultimately reveals. Trees figure on almost every hole of this long-popular municipal course right at the edge of Santa Rosa, where it gives way to the surrounding mountains, valleys and vineyards. Turn left out of the lot after your round and you’re a very short and beautiful country drive from Glen Ellen and all the fabled wineries and towns that give Sonoma County such memorable character. A great deal of that character can be found on the Bennett Valley course itself, where carefully tended valley oaks, redwoods, Monterey pines and assorted sycamores, poplars and maples will both challenge your accuracy and keep you looking skyward to behold their grandeur. Rivaling the trees for their character and longevity is the Bennett Valley staff, the core of which has tended the course since many of the trees were knee-high to them. Director of Golf and former Head Pro Bob Borowicz and Course Superintendent Don Ballard started working the course as high school students in 1974, cutting grass and changing cups after their classes at nearby Montgomery High. Assistant Superintendent Steve Tiedeman came on board about the same time. Jim Knego, the current head golf pro, served in the same position in the late '70s. These four know most every blade of grass and branch on the course, and are one of the chief reasons why it is held in such high esteem by longtime players who note the impeccable conditions on all 18 holes. Greens are immaculate and mostly true, having been smoothed out in a late

‘90s renovation, but golf challenges remain. One of those challenges is to reach the green by shooting straight enough through the trees (there’s that word again) lining the fairways. If you do so, you’ll have some breathing room in your putting game, which will come in handy on a few holes noted for their incitement to aggravation. The par-5 No. 1 hole will get you going— and going—with 482 yards from the blue tees and a small forest awaiting you on either side of the fairway’s end. One large

oak sits smack in the middle there, so if you can get over or around it, you’ll be in good shape heading into the green, though a grass bunker awaits if you undershoot. The par-5 No. 5 hole will stretch you out to 514 yards, and though not as many trees dot the landscape, it is slightly uphill off the tee, with a straightaway approach to a tricky green, and a quartet of bunkers around it that have been known to thwart the best of intentions on this always challenging hole. It’s the one that seems to attract more conversation than others in gatherings at the 19th hole. No. 7 is another longtime favorite, a 364-yard, par-4 gem that begins with a densely packed (yes, with trees!) tee area that plays out of a kind of chute before you break out some 150 yards into the fairway. From there, it’s relatively straight shooting to the

green with its lone bunker right. Shoot left to right here off the tee to avoid problems. Bennett Valley goes only 6,583 yards from the tips, and the mostly flat course makes walking a snap if you’re in an ambling mood. The front nine is more scenic and varied, the back nine straighter and true. Though an urban municipal course that tops out at $40 weekends and goes down to the $20s and $teens from there, houses are barely visible, obscured when they do appear by the lush foliage. As for amenities, an active driving range offers both grass and mat surfaces, some shade, and a scenic vista where you can watch your balls fly among the oaks. A putting green, of course. Afterwards (or before, if you don’t like playing on an empty stomach), head to the Legends Bar & Grill, which serves all three meals daily and provides a lovely perch from which to watch the action, or the sky, or both. There’s no missing the beauty of Bennett Valley any time of year, but fall, the season of long shadows, with Bennett Peak and Mt. Taylor looming above and Matanzas Creek running through the course until late spring (assuming it does rain again here in California, someday…) reveals why Sonoma County remains such a beloved destination for gawkers from around the world.

If you’re within driving distance, lucky you. Just lay your clubs in the trunk and make a beautiful, eminently playable golf course just one more reason to pay a visit.

Beautifully situated amid the rolling hills, vineyards and ancient oaks of Napa’s tranquil Pope Valley, historic Aetna Springs has been a favorite spot for golf in the wine country for more than a century. The course dates back to 1891, which would make it the oldest golf facility in California. Revered for its rustic natural beauty, the Aetna Springs resort opened in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, Tom Doak meticulously renovated the original Aetna Springs nine-hole golf course. Famous for working with the natural terrain rather than rearranging it, the renowned golf course designer carefully maintained the beauty of the old world style course. In 2010, GolfWorld Magazine recognized Aetna Springs as the 4th best 9-hole golf course in America. This challenging 6114-yard layout creates a series of ingenious challenges for the thinking golfer, who must further contend with mature oak trees and streams on nearly every hole. The restored par-3 fourth hole is a 152-yard challenge for even the most experienced golfer. Aetna Springs is a consistent surprise for new visitors looking to golf off the region’s well-trod fairways. 1600 AETNA SPRINGS RD, POPE VALLEY, CA 95467 707-965-2115 WWW.AETNASPRINGS.COM

California’s Gold Country never looks more green than it does at Apple Mountain Golf Resort, where towering pine, cedar and madrone trees frame one of the picture-prettiest courses you’ll ever come across. The grandness of the Sierra Nevada is evident at every turn of this 6,308-yard, par-70 beauty designed by Algie Pulley. Perched low in the Sierra range off Hwy 50 in the mountain town of Camino, Apple Mountain is neither snowbound nor heat-baked, instead offering consistently gorgeous weather to complement its playability. You’ll find plenty of shot making challenges, though, on holes playfully named after Gold Country icons such as “Ante Up,” “Mother Lode” and “Whisky Bowl.” A 300+ yard driving range and 12,000 square feet of greens let you pitch, putt, chip and breathe as deep as you please of the mountain air. Apple Mountain – It’s like playing in Truckee or Tahoe, but an hour closer and $100 cheaper.

The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more intriguing when attached to a golf course tucked away in as picturesque and sparsely populated an area as Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Beau Pre means “beautiful meadow” in French, and the course fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Water comes into play on nine holes and sand traps are strategically placed. “Majestic” is the operative word for this area some 250 miles north of San Francisco. Redwood National Park and Six Rivers National Forest provide part of the backdrop, and the Pacific Ocean fills out the rest. Travelers bound for Oregon find Beau Pre a perfect stop, with daily public play, excellent in-town lodging, and plentiful other outdoors opportunities available to recreationally minded golfers. McKinleyville also hosts the World's Tallest Totem Pole-at 57,000 pounds and 160 feet high, it was carved from one redwood tree.

Since 1970, residents and visitors have been fortunate to enjoy golf in the most beautiful part of a beautiful city at Bennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course just minutes from downtown is surrounded by mountains that are carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Matanzas Creek meanders through four holes, and with no houses lining the course, it's just you and your game, which is aided mightily by wonderful course conditions. A quartet of long par-5s are reachable along Ben Harmon's 6,548-yard, par-72 layout. Greens were enlarged and upgraded and bunkers were added a few of years ago, and a fabulous new clubhouse and pro shop opened in 2007. Meanwhile, players at this gateway to the Wine Country continue to enjoy one of the very best values in the golf world. If your outdoor pursuits extend beyond golf, nearby Annadel State Park has long been a mecca for mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers and trail runners.

You can tell you’re in for a “unique” golfing experience when your scorecard’s local rules indicate the following: “Vineyards are to be played as lateral hazards.” Such is the welcoming backdrop to the Chardonnay Golf Club’s 18-hole golf facility, a jewel set amidst the glories of the Napa Valley. The championship golf holes meander through its namesake chardonnay vines, multiple lakes, and the gurgling Fagan Creek, which traverses through the track. With one of the world’s great wine regions literally on its doorstep, the Chardonnay Golf Club offers a wealth of after-golf opportunities that can begin in its full-service wine country clubhouse, featuring the View Bar & Grill, and proceed from there to the renowned wineries, restaurants and entertainment venues throughout the Napa Valley and the adjoining Bay Area. For special promotions and value offers, go to our website and subscribe to our E-Club. Great golf tournament venue for golf outings and charity golf fundraisers. Where the foothills of Mt. Diablo meet the tranquil community of Brentwood is the wonderful setting for Deer Ridge Golf Club. This championship, par-71, Andy Raugust design is under the same ownership and management as adjacent Shadow Lakes Golf Club. Together the two facilities are redefining East Bay golf. Deer Ridge Golf Club is defined by ample landing areas off the tee through rolling terrain, impeccable agronomic conditions, and traditional greenside bunkering that requires precision on approach shots. The course hosts a family friendly approach with active and inviting men's, women’s, and junior programs. An extensive short game practice area includes two putting greens, a pitching and bunker area, and a unique multi-target short-game range. Coupled with Shadow Lakes Golf Clubs practice facilities, dual facility PGA instructional staff, it delivers every game improvement solution that local golfers could hope for.

No one who travels the highways and byways of the Santa Cruz coast soon forgets the magnificent ocean vistas and vast carpets of redwood and pine trees. If you’re lucky enough to spend part of your day on the fairways of DeLaveaga Golf Course, you’ll just enhance the memory of this extraordinary slice of the world. Several of the 18 holes provide views of the Pacific which churns just over three miles away. Carved into the canyons of an 800acre park that was gifted to the City of Santa Cruz in the early 1900s, DeLaveaga was built in 1970 as a par-70 shotmaker’s paradise. Architect Bert Stamps created narrow landing areas and small, challenging greens to test players of any level. You’ll need to be on top of your irons and your mental game here. It helps that there are no homes or streets slicing through the course to distract you— just modestly priced public golf in a setting of stirring, immodest beauty.

Opened in 1996, the Ranch Course was the first of the two sterling Diablo Grande courses to come on line in the spacious setting of Patterson, at the northern tip of the Central Valley. Designed by the internationally renowned Denis Griffiths (Fairmount at St. Andrews, among many others), “The Ranch” capitalizes on rolling terrain, a natural creek, and abundant other water features to make each round an exercise in graceful, ever-challenging golf. The 7,243-yard, par-72 layout (four other tee placements go down to 5,112 yards) requires some hefty driving, most dramatically on the 649-yard No. 12 signature hole that will ask for everything you have and pay off handsomely if you can give it. Modest rates include cart and range balls. Dramatic elevation changes, abundant oak trees and surrounding vineyards add spice and visual variety to this course, which has earned spots on “Top Northern California Courses” lists in Golf Today, among other honors.

Nestled against spectacular coastal mountains that keep the fog, smog and congestion at bay, Hidden Valley Lake is a golfing oasis in lightly populated Lake County. Golfing on this Billy Bell (Torrey Pines architect) course means an unhurried pace on 18 richly varied holes, each with its admirers who claim it as the most interesting, or challenging, or beautiful. Fabulous, head-turning vistas on this par-72, 6708-yard jewel include special touches like the signature 15th hole's 250-foot drop to the fairway below. Five water hazards, four different tee placements, nearly year-round sunshine and 100-year-old oak trees lend the kind of soul-soothing character one can build a weekend around. Just 30 minutes north of Calistoga, Hidden Valley Lake Golf and Country Club offers special Stay & Play packages at nearby Twin Pine Hotel & Casino, an adjacent Good Sam Club campground including R.V. hookups, boating and fishing at Clear Lake, as well as wine-tasting, hot air ballooning, hot springs, a glider port and other delights nearby. Stunning surroundings and luxurious facilities on a links-style course at the base of the Sierra Nevada—it’s little wonder the Lakes Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club & Resort has USA Today proclaiming it among the “Top Ten Courses to Die For.” But Genoa Lakes promises to radically enhance your living instead, thanks to the stirring natural landscape upon which PGA Champion Peter Jacobsen and John Harbottle III have designed an utterly engaging test of your golfing skills. The Lakes Course, along with its sister Ranch Course just down the road, enjoys semi-private status in this high desert wonderland. Lakes Course boasts rolling fairways and lush wetlands courtesy of the nearby Carson River. Water comes into play on 14 holes, meaning long straight driving will serve you well. Just 15 minutes from Carson City and half-hour from Lake Tahoe.

Designed to integrate the beauty of the natural savannah desert landscape into the layout, Genoa Lakes Resort Ranch Course’s 7,290-yard, par 72 championship course features breathtaking 360-degree views. Rugged mountains and lush valleys offer scenes of exceptional variety from each hole. From the 618-yard, par-5 downhill 18th hole to the 188-yard, par-3 island on the 8th, each hole has been uniquely designed in a non-parallel format, creating a sense of solitude and serenity. The front nine meanders through desert landscape with spectacular water features. The back nine begins on the valley floor and climbs 300 feet up the eastern slope through mature savannah sage, where mule, deer, mountain lions, rabbits, eagles and coyote abound. Four sets of tees on each hole make the course an enjoyable challenge for players of all skill levels.

Just two miles south of Mendocino Village, Little River Inn has been family-run for five generations. Its 225 acres include conference facilities and 65 units, most with ocean views and other amenities such as hot tubs and fireplaces. An acclaimed restaurant, adjoining “Ole’s Whale Watch Bar” and a salon/day spa will help fuel your getaway spirit. Days, venture out to the 9-hole course that can play like 18 with three placements and dual greens on holes 7 and 9. Enjoy golf packages or daily play at modest rates. Circled by redwoods and pine trees, the 5,458-yard course (blue and white tees) encourages you to keep the ball in play. Mare Island Golf Club is now a public course due to the scores of military base closures that occurred around the country in the 1990’s. The Mare Island Navel Shipyard was decommissioned on April 1, 1996, and the then 9-hole golf course was re-designed by renowned and Bay Area golf course architect, Robin Nelson. Bay Area golfers were among the clear winners when Mare Island became available for play. Gorgeous views of San Pablo Bay, the Sacramento River Delta and the Golden Gate Bridge await you from nearly every angle of this 18-hole linksstyle golf course. The exquisitely maintained greens are frequently reached with uphill shots that will challenge your accuracy and touch. The course has the charming distinction of being the “oldest course west of the Mississippi” (built in 1892). Modest green fees for 18-holes play well off the million dollar views you’ll enjoy throughout your round. Please visit our website for rates and additional coupons.

Mill Valley is one of those tucked away, tree-enshrouded towns, population 14,000, for which the word “bucolic” seems to have been coined. So it is little wonder that its municipal golf course is a largely unknown jewel, it being further tucked away—like one of the Chinese boxes-within-boxes that so delight children at holiday time—under lush canopies of coastal redwoods and the soft inviting hills of Marin County. The irony is you can get there within minutes off Highway 101, just nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The challenging 9-hole, par-33 layout has six par-4s and the rest par-3. It also contains its own ingenious “short course” (par 27), for those still building their game. Built in 1919, the course was upgraded several years ago with revamped greens, a small practice facility, putting green and snack bar. Club rentals are available, and its “2 for 20” slogan (two hours to play, under 20 bucks) should leave you time and cash aplenty to enjoy the countless other pleasures of this NorCal paradise.

The Ridge Golf Course in Auburn puts you far enough above the Central Valley’s heat and below the cold of the Sierra to make four-season golfing a true pleasure—with a considerable assist from renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Just half-hour up the foothills from Sacramento, The Ridge embodies the Jones, Jr. signature of meticulous blending with its surroundings of hills, knolls, rock outcroppings and abundant trees. Forty-eight bunkers make for some tricky negotiations along the 6,734-yard, par 71 layout, but this is not a course that will have you fleeing to the clubhouse for relief. Driving range, learning center, putting greens, pro shop—it’s all here. The Longs Drug Challenge Tournament made The Ridge its home in both 2004 and 2005. The club’s “Events Center” provides robust opportunities for post-round celebrations, weddings, banquets, corporate meetings and more. With no homes surrounding the course, views abound, and an Advanced Rate Program offers progressively discounted fees the further you plan ahead.

This 18-hole, 6,800-yard Ted Robinson creation has made quite an impact in Bay Area golfing circles since its debut in 1996. Located amidst a thriving active adult community near the Sacramento River Delta, Rio Vista lets you calibrate your game to the amount of risk you are willing to accept. With a slope rating of 127 and water a prominent feature throughout, veteran golfers will get all the challenge they want. Recent converts to the game can decide for themselves how far they feel like stretching. Four par-5s measure 502, 546, 488 and 491 yards, respectively. Add in greens described as “fast and somewhat tricky” by its resident pro and it’s little wonder that the NCGA’s handicapping system identifies The Golf Club at Rio Vista as one of the most challenging courses in the state. The 18th (signature) hole is a classic: dogleg into a prevailing wind, bunker protecting the corner, lake fronting the green, waterfalls gracing each side. Pure golfing heaven. Has been ranked by Golf Digest Places to Play 4.5 Star Award Winner.

Salmon Run Golf Course sits at a kind of metaphorical crossroads, where all the best elements converge for a true golfing getaway. Just six miles from the California border in southern Oregon, this 18-hole gem sparkles yearround, protected from coastal fog and wind with its location three miles inland, just outside the town of Brookings (population 6,000). Recreational options abound, with incredible salmon and steelhead fishing in the Chetco and Rogue rivers, jet boating, rafting, and wilderness hiking under redwood forest canopies. Jack Creek runs through much of the 6,274-yard, par-72 layout. A network of bridges carries players over the creek that often hosts spawning fish. Separated from any development by a surrounding forest of fir, maple and rare myrtle wood trees, Salmon Run provides a tremendous sense of solitude. Modest rates just add to the allure for anyone ready to explore Oregon and the northern Pacific Coast.

Sweeping views of the Mt. Diablo Range and surrounding valleys are just the beginning of the pleasures awaiting you at Shadow Lakes Golf Club, now under new management with neighboring Deer Ridge Golf Club. Architect Gary Roger Baird has crafted an imaginative blend of traditional golf course elements with enough contemporary features to create a wholly original vision of what a golf course can be. At par-71, Shadow Lakes goes 6,710 yards from the back tees. Seventy-nine sharply sculpted bunkers and undulating terrain will keep your focus on the tasks at hand. Those tasks will include negotiating a fabulous and varied collection of par-3s interspersed with more complex challenges such as the 572-yard No. 6 hole with a lake off the tee, a dry creek bed in play, and an ending with two uphill shots. Shadow Lakes is already making its own name as a must-play site in Bay Area golf. It was also nominated for Golf Digest’s “Best New Course” Category in 2002. Restaurant area specializing in savory bar-b-qued meats using our “Southern Pride Smoker” oven! Custom events, receptions and banquets welcome in the new Event and Banquet room. 401 W. Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true. The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuilt to complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. What hasn't changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $29 weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.

The many enchantments of northern Nevada where it sweeps up against the California border and the Sierra range are fully realized at Sunridge Golf Club in Carson City. The high desert setting includes thoughtfully designed elevation changes from tee to green and hole to hole, with panoramic vistas of the mountains and the Carson Valley floor sprawling far below. Nine stone-walled lakes stretch out over four total miles of shoreline, so you’ll suffer no worries about desert aridity as you traverse the par-72 layout. A series of bridges and tunnels provide additional mystique to this daily fee course that plays like the most rarefied resort. Five different tee placements help accommodate every level of golfer, and the extras include superb practice facilities, clubhouse with huge outdoor patio, lessons and clinics by PGA pros, and a 19th (playoff) hole graced by cascading waterfalls. This is golf at Sunridge—a sizable slice of heaven awaiting your knock on its door.

TPC Harding Park, named after avid golfer and President Warren Harding, opened in 1925 and is almost as rich in tradition as the Monterey Cypress trees that line it. Masterfully designed by architect Willie Watson of Olympic Club fame, the 163-acre course takes marvelous advantage of the existing San Francisco topography, contours and vegetation, including the adjoining Lake Merced. A frequent PGA TOUR stop in the 1960s, the newly renovated TPC Harding Park is again attracting big name tours, having hosted the 2005 World Golf Championship, the 2009 Presidents Cup, and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2010, 2011, and returning in 2013. Harding’s 18 holes are complemented by the “Fleming 9” course for a quick in-City golf getaway. Ranked No. 13 on “Best Municipal Golf Courses in the United States" by Golfweek magazine and at 4.5 stars on Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play,” TPC Harding Park offers an unparalleled golfing adventure on a historic course that matches perfectly with the City it calls home. New greens re-opened March 22, 2014.

The Champions course has been rated #1 in Southern California in the 2003 Zagat Golf Survey. Also designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, it is defined by an open and native feel. Distinguished by gently rolling terrain, extraordinary views and a rugged bunkering style reminiscent of a linksland course. The remarkable practice facility maintains tournament ready conditions and meet professional level expectations. Some of the noteworthy features are: double ended and targeted 400-yard grass range, a short game area with bunkers and chipping greens, plus two putting greens. Expect nothing less than exceptional, all the elements are here for a world class day of golf. Conveniently located in the heart of the Inland Empire, golfers converge on Tukwet Canyon Golf Club in Beaumont from every point in Southern California.

There is nothing symbolic when aficionados call Tuscany Golf Course in Henderson, Nevada a “desert oasis.” Set against the starkly beautiful and light-filled southern Nevada mountains, Tuscany’s gorgeously kept fairways and greens are rimmed by plentiful water, palm and mesquite trees, and drop-dead views ranging from the nearby Las Vegas skyline to stately Mt. Charleston 12,000 feet above the valley floor. Ted Robinson had a feast drawing up the 6,906-yard layout amidst the Italian-themed architecture of the clubhouse and Tuscany Café. Holes 9 and 18 draw consistent raves as dazzling—and sometimes dizzying—par-4 challenges that stretch 400+ yards, with water, bunkers and tricky greens menacing you all the way. Just 20 minutes from the Las Vegas strip, Tuscany offers a classy but less costly alternative to Vegas courses, leaving visitors more flush to pursue the many other entertainment options they presumably want to include on a tourist weekend. Tuscany is one daytime delight that will always keep them happily asking for more.

This challenging-but-always-pleasing course in the lovely and tranquil Capay Valley was established in January 2008 both to enhance the vacation getaway atmosphere for Cache Creek Casino Resort visitors and to provide a unique venue on its very own terms for golf-only enthusiasts drawn up the hill from Sacramento, Wine Country, and the Bay Area. Brad Bell filled the 7,334 yards of oak-studded hills and tall grasses (four other tee placements work down to 5,426 yards) with plentiful bunkers and a picturesque 19-acre irrigation lake that provides plot twists on three holes. Nos. 1 and 18 are gorgeous bookends, the first from a 170-foot elevated tee overlooking the entire course, the last working its way over and around a lake finger to a bunker-filled green. Modest rates, ranging from $59 to $129, include a cart with GPS, and among the numerous amenities are a brand new 10,600-square-foot clubhouse, spectacular practice facility, and the adjoining casino with its 200-room luxury hotel and spa, eight restaurants, swimming pool, and top-quality entertainment.

Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surrounding homes, with mountains in almost every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five PGA Nike Tour events, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform its namesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting new downtown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, all the better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside the course boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” on the Nike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With Charlie's restaurant offering a sophisticated menu and beautiful views from the lakeside patio accompanied by a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.

The 10 best things about the world’s best game

By Rick Vacek Every sport has things you like about it, but golf's are highly unusual. Here are the 10 things I like most:

1. The camaraderie: There's nothing better than spending four hours on the golf course with people you enjoy. You always hate to see it end -- every time. You laugh, you share, you learn new things about them. When you're playing in a good group, playing well is secondary to just being out there.

2. The fresh air: A freshly cut fairway ... the wind ... the trees waving in that wind ... the rising sun or the setting sun or even the fog. It's just fun to see how the conditions affect the game and see what you can do about overcoming those conditions -- while enjoying them at the same time.

3. The feel of a well-struck shot: There's nothing quite like getting one on the sweet spot, dead solid perfect. We usually associate that feeling with a good drive, but it can happen with an iron, too. It's a feeling you'd love to repeat over and over, but you know that you'd better just savor it because it doesn't happen all that often. 4. Pulling off a tough shot: You're in the trees, virtually locked out, but you see that little opening and you decide to go for it. You commit to it despite knowing that your playing partners will wonder whether you've taken your stupid pill. And then you pull it off, and your shot winds up next to the hole. A bogey or worse becomes a birdie. A round-saver. A memory. A chance to tell the other members of your group, "Piece of cake. Had it all the way." 5. Just getting to attempt a tough shot: The challenge is half the fun. We don't go out there to play safe all the time. Sometimes, you've got to go for it on general principle. 6. Seeing how your home course can play differently: Pin placements on certain holes can change your day completely. It's such a beautiful thing, this challenge of playing the same hole in different ways. Other sports don't have that, for the most part. Golf is always new. Every day is different in some way. 7. Playing different courses: You always can add to the variety the game gives you. It's especially interesting to go back to courses you haven't seen in awhile.

8. The 19th hole: No round is complete without a beverage and a bite to eat afterward. Most courses recognize the romance of this and provide a nice place to sit, talk and maybe watch other groups come up the 18th. 9. Reviewing your round: If you're smart, you'll keep track of how many fairways you hit, how many greens in regulation you had, and how many putts you needed. Those three statistics usually are a good indicator of how well you played. You can address the trends by the way you practice. 10. Anticipating when you're going to play again: Golf is a game that I can't get enough of, and if you're reading this it's a good bet you feel the same way. Whenever I have a round on my schedule, I'm looking forward to it days or sometimes weeks in advance.

You're probably looking forward to your next round, too. So get out there! And while you're playing, think about the things you like best about golf -- and then celebrate them. 64 -
