Do you need to score well to have fun?
Are you disappointed when your shot doesn’t end up where you intended? It sounds so simple. In reality, all we’re trying to do is hit a small, dimpled round ball with a bent metal stick to a target that’s hundreds of yards away. Hold on, why do we do this again? The reality for me is that the vast majority of my shots do not reach their intended destination. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that I fail at golf more than anything else in my life. I’m often reminded during my hundred-plus rounds of golf every year that it’s a good thing I have a “day job”, because if my livelihood depended on consistently executing great golf shots, I’d have a hard time feeding myself, let alone my family. Lucky for me, what’s important is just playing a game I love, and when that love isn’t dependent on a score, a great experience is guaranteed every time I set foot on the first tee. I, like many of you, don’t practice much. I’ll always elect to play a round rather than hit hundreds of balls on the range. This likely gets back to why I’m not the best golfer, but does remind me that I fell in love with golf for the fun, not necessarily for the number on my scorecard. I guess that in year 20 of publishing Golf Guide, we continue to expand our reach and information about golf courses to inspire you to get out there and enjoy the game like we do. To help you do just that, we’ve got some exciting things to share with you in 2017, including a new website at GolfGuide.Net, 19th hole-esque banter on our podcast, and events where we can get together to enjoy the game. The unrivaled craft beer king of California boasts some of the best high-end public golf on the Pacific coast. San Diego County alone is home to over 100 different beer breweries, ranging from internationally acclaimed breweries like Stone, Ballast Point and Green Flash, down to local haunts like Pizza Port in Carlsbad and Modern Times in Old Town San Diego. If you’re a fan of double pale ales, then San Diego is the place to sample as many as your liver can handle; the now-popular genre was first brewed in San Diego, and many locals affectionately refer to it as “San Diego Pale Ale.” San Diego’s golf scene can lay claim to being as well-known as its breweries. The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more fascinating when attached to a golf course tucked away in as picturesque and sparsely populated an area as McKinleyville in Humboldt County. Beau Pre means “beautiful meadow” in French, and the golf course bearing its name fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. BENNETT VALLEY GOLF COURSE SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA Since 1970, golfers have been fortunate to enjoy the game in a particularly scenic part of a beautiful city at Bennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course, just minutes from downtown, is surrounded by mountains carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Matanzas Creek meanders through four holes, and with no houses lining most of the course, it’s just you and your game, which is aided mightily by solid course conditions. A pleasant mix of long and short holes is abundant along Ben Harmon’s 6,548yard, par-72 layout. In the early 2000s, every green was upgraded and enlarged to accompany the improved greenside bunkering. DELAVEAGA GOLF COURSE SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA No one who travels the highways and byways of the Santa Cruz coast soon forgets its magnificent ocean vistas and vast carpets of redwood and pine trees. If you’re lucky enough to spend part of your day on the fairways of DeLaveaga Golf Course, you’ll just enhance the memory of this extraordinary slice of the world. Several of the 18 holes provide views of the Pacific, which churns just over three miles away. Carved into the canyons of an 800-acre park that was gifted to the City of Santa Cruz in the early 1900s, DeLaveaga was built in 1970 as a par-70 shotmaker’s paradise. Architect Bert Stamps created narrow landing areas and small, challenging greens to test players of every skill level. Despite its short length (just over 6,100 yards), strong iron play and a sharp mental game are requirements to post a good number here. Opened in 1996, the Ranch Course was the first of two sterling Diablo Grande courses to come on line in the spacious setting of Patterson, at the northern tip of the Central Valley. Designed by highly regarded architect Denis Griffiths, “The Ranch” capitalizes on its rolling terrain, a natural creek, and abundant other water features to make each round an exercise in graceful, ever-challenging golf. The 7,243-yard, par-72 layout (four other tee placements go down to 5,112 yards) requires some hefty driving, most dramatically on the 649-yard signature 12th hole that will ask for everything you have and pay off handsomely if you can give it. FURNACE CREEK RESORT DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA As the world’s lowest golf course, Furnace Creek has long been a “bucket list” item for golfers seeking a challenge they won’t find anywhere else. Furnace Creek provides golfers with a unique and unforgettable golfing experience that will make playing at sea level seem like an ocean breeze. TEMPLATE HOLE PROFILE
Mastering the Redan Many of golf’s greatest holes are modified replicas of others built before them. Some golf holes have been replicated thousands of times, and are referred to as ‘Template’ holes. To better understand the strategy and history of the courses we play, each issue we’ll take a look at a famous template hole that can be seen and played all over the West Coast. ORIGIN

LENGTH
Traditionally 180-215 yards. Modern Redans range between 165-225 yards.
BUNKERING
Deep bunker guards direct frontal approach. Deep bunkering also beyond short side of green. Traditional Redans also have a “short” bunker 30-75 yards in front of the green.
GREEN COMPLEX
Putting surface oriented at a 45-degree angle to tee, most renditions are boldly tilted to the rear. Classic Redan greens are tilted from front-right to back-left. Reverse-Redans are built as a mirror image (front-left to back-right).
STRATEGY
One’s strategy on a Redan will be determined by skill and preferred shot pattern. A skilled player who plays a right-to-left shot will find the Redan to be accommodating to their ball flight as they will be able to easily shape a shot to a pin. For less-skilled golfers or players who hit a left-to-right shot, the Redan is more challenging. The obvious bailout position is short and right of the green, but that will leave a challenging pitch that is heavily influenced by slope. The best place to miss is long and left, which will leave an uphill chip to the pin.

Mill Valley is a tucked away, tree-enshrouded towns, population 14,000, for which the word “bucolic” seems to have been coined. So it is little wonder that its municipal golf course is a largely unknown jewel, it being further tucked away— like one of the Chinese boxes-within-boxes that so delight children at holiday time—under lush canopies of coastal redwoods and the soft inviting hills of Marin County. The irony is you can get there within minutes off Highway 101, just nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The challenging 9-hole, par-33 layout has six par-4s and the rest par-3. It also contains an ingenious “short course” (par 27), for those still building their game. Built in 1919, the course was upgraded several years ago with revamped greens, a small practice facility, putting green and snack bar. Club rentals are available, and its “2 for 20” slogan (two hours to play, under 20 bucks) should leave you time and cash aplenty to enjoy the countless other pleasures of this NorCal paradise.

MISSION HILLS OF HAYWARD GOLF COURSE HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA Whether you’re hankering for a quick 9 holes, a bucket of balls or both, Mission Hills of Hayward is an ideal venue to polish every aspect of your game. It performs admirably as both a fine place to introduce new players to the game, and a great resource for solid players looking to refine their skills in a casual setting. The undulating Gary Bye layout is a superior allweather performer, and a double-decker range lets you swing away till 10 p.m. daily. Mission Hills isn’t a collection of repetitive one-shot holes like you’ll find at many other executive layouts. Instead, it offers features such as three par-4s that range in distance from 271-359 yards. Its par 3s vary in length between 92-164 yards, and no two holes’ distances are near the same, meaning you’ll likely be hitting a different club on every hole. Two practice putting greens, three green chipping areas and affordable prices make this municipal niner a treasure for every level of golfer in the Bay Area.

A gorgeous canvas of sky, redwood and river inspired famed designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie when he laid out Northwood Golf Club in the Sonoma County hamlet of Monte Rio back in 1928. The architect of Augusta National and Cypress Point was commissioned to build the course so members of the Bohemian Grove, located across the river from the course, could have a place to play during their summer retreat. Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true and provide a bit of relief for less-than-perfect approach shots. The par-3s offer a great deal of variety and play between 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens were rebuilt a few years ago to complement the 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened back in 2005. What hasn’t changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $29 on weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.

SUNRIDGE GOLF CLUB CARSON CITY, NEVADA The many enchantments of northern Nevada where it sweeps up against the California border and the Sierra range are fully realized at Sunridge Golf Club in Carson City. WINDSOR GOLF CLUB WINDSOR, CALIFORNIA “Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surrounding homes, with mountains in nearly every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five Nike Tour events and the LPGA Symetra Tour’s POCMed Classic, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor’s 1989 debut helped transform its namesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting new downtown area. TPC Harding Park, named after avid golfer and President Warren Harding, opened in 1925 and is almost as rich in tradition as the Monterey Cypress trees that line it. Brad Bell filled the 7,334 yards of oak-studded hills and tall grasses with plentiful bunkers and a picturesque 19-acre irrigation lake that provides plot twists on three different holes. Numbers 1 and 18 are gorgeous bookends, the first from a 170-foot elevated tee overlooking the entire course, the last working its way over and around a lake finger to a green guarded by some of the fiercest bunkers on the course. Considering the quality of its design and impeccable course conditions, Yocha Dehe boasts modest green fees that include a cart with GPS and USB charging ports. Among the amenities are a 10,600-square foot clubhouse, spectacular practice facility, and adjoining casino with its 200-room luxury hotel and spa, eight restaurants, swimming pool, and top-quality entertainment. Most would state that Yocha Dehe is a feature of the casino and resort, but avid golfers know the truth has the roles reversed.
