It was fantastic to see T iernan for the first time since the pandemic and he was more excited than ever to show off some of the wonder ful courses Club Choice Ireland offer as par t of their pac kages He was also quick to point out that this most south easter l y tip of Ireland was also officially the countr y s sunniest area Myself and Tiernan were delighted to be joined for a pre round sandwich by the general manager at Rosslare Links, Jerr y Foley Jerr y was able to give me some histor y of the 120 year old course and some much needed tips for playing in the windy conditions that lay ahead on what is the onl y links course in the region Situated on a narrow, sandy peninsula over looking Wexford Harbour, the c lub is home to two unique and challenging courses The championship ‘Old Course’, established in 1905, and the 12 hole “Burrow Links’ course I was playing the Old Course and was reliably informed that the coastal winds are what makes Rosslare play differently e ver y single time you play it W ith a strong wind straight behind on six of the first seven holes I was hitting some ab normally long distances by my mediocre standards I knocked it on the 513 yard par five third hole with a drive and a five iron and narrowly missed my eagle putt I then hit a dr iver and wedge through the green at stroke hole one the 436 yard fif th The sixth and se venth holes were two more cracking holes, with the par five seventh being a real gem at 550 yards through the sand dunes I now had to turn back into the wind and found my distances were not quite as impressive, to say the least! I hit my best driver and then a three wood to the The stunning Rosslare Golf Links is South East Ireland ’ s only links course.
INSET : Golfers Local ’ s Paul Chapple, left, with Club Choice Ireland ’ s Tiernan Byrne.
MY CO UN T Y Wexford visit began with a trip to the beautiful Rosslare Golf Links where I met up with Club Choice Ireland ’ s T iernan Byrne, who also hap pens to be a member there, for lunch be fore I went out to test my game in the ever strengthening coastal winds
400 yard ninth and still had more than 100 yards lef t to the green! I then hit a good three wood on the 170 yard 10th hole and was short of the putting surface again This was brutal golf, but also still in credibly enjoyable and before I knew it I was playing the lovely par five 18th hole that features an old stone wall that runs right across the back of the 18th green and separates it from the first fair way Having dried off briefly in the c lub house I still had a spare hour or so of daylight so, rather than head straight to my hotel for the night, I popped over to St Helen’s Bay Golf Resort to say a quick hello to T iernan’s dad L arr y, who lives over that way and also works alongside his son for Club Choice Ireland Larr y suggested I borrow a bugg y and play, what an Irish journalist recently de scribed as “the two best finishing holes in Irish golf !” It ’ s some c laim, but boy I wouldn’t disagree Both holes are located just a few paces from the c liff top and play back towards the modern c lubhouse The 17th is a 200+ yard par three and the 18th a short par four W ith the beach in such c lose proximity anything lef t is a real no no I actually hit two really good tee shots but then somehow managed to tug my 80 yard approach to the last left into the thick stuff W ith the rain still pouring down and the wind still howling, I promised myself one day I’ ll return in kinder conditions and play the full 18 For now it was al most dusk and I headed 25 minutes north into Wexford City Centre for my night at the Clayton W hites Hotel Renowned as one of the best four star hotels in the countr y, it ’ s the prefect base if you are playing golf in the region I chec ked in, had a nice hot shower and headed straight for the Librar y Bar for a couple of drinks before enjoying a beautiful two course dinner of slow cooked beef stew with a puff pastr y top followed by a gorgeous mango and pas sion fruit delice T iernan had recommended The Un dertaker Bar just round the corner from Clayton W hites so I spent the last hour of my evening sampling their fabulous G uinness before heading bac k to my room in preparation for my 8 30am visit the following day to have a quick look at Wexford Golf Club before heading off to play at Bunclody and then Courtown Wexford Golf Club was just five min utes’ dr ive from the hotel and was up graded in 2006 by architect Jeff Howes The parkland course and modern c lubhouse are located at the top of Mul gannon Hill and offer magnificent town and sea views I was disappointed my schedule didn’t give me time to play, so I’ ll add that to my list for my next trip In the meantime I was heading north and slightly inland for a 45 minute drive to Bunc lody Golf & F ishing Club Situated in 300 acres of breathtaking parkland in the former Hall Dare Estate
In our last edition, Golfers Local editor PAUL CHAPPLE wrote about his experiences of playing and staying in the Kilkenny region of South East Ireland. This month he describes what it was like spending a few days in neighbouring Wexford when he played Rosslare Golf Links, St Helen’s Bay, Bunclody and Cour town as well as visiting Wexford Golf Club and staying in the Clayton W hites Hotel.

The lovely course at Wexford and its modern clubhouse. The lift to the 18th tee at Bunclody. The Clayton W hites Hotel, in Wexford was Paul ’ s base. on the Car low Wexford border, there is plenty of room for this fabulous, must visit course Opened in 2009, it is already ranked in the top 20 parkland courses in Ireland and, in 2019, it hosted the Ir ish PGA Championship
Paul tees off on the wonder ful 15th hole at Bunclody manager David Colley He was telling me how membership was up 25% this year and that the c lub were also getting an increasing number of UK golfers through bookings with Club Choice Ireland David suggested I head out and have a look around I was immediatel y im pressed The fourth hole had lovely views and you could hear the sea from the fifth tee The ninth was a strong par five that had two ditches going across it The 12th was also a cracking par five with a pond in front and to the right of the green The 15th was also a really good hole that had a huge tree in the centre of the fair way and a glimpse of the sea from the ele vated tee The green on 17 was tuc ked away amongst nine large trees that momentar il y c aused me some confusion, but the 18th was an absolute gem of a par three almost entirely over water A shot into the heart of the green, two putts and a quick pint of Guinness in the clubhouse was the perfect end to my trip as I headed for D ublin and my S tena Line ferr y back to Holyhead So if a golf trip to this part of Ireland is something that might be of interest, you would be best advised to contact Club Choice Ireland via email info@clubchoiceireland com, Freephone 0800 285 1490 or visit their website www c lubchoiceireland com They tr ul y are the exper ts in golf in Ireland ’ s Ancient East and given the glowing recommendations from the courses and hotels I visited; you will be in good hands
The course can play more than 7,000 yards in length and has a variety of holes rarely seen on one course It also includes a lif t that takes you from one green to the next tee, but more of that in a mo ment I started off on the white tees but after failing to reach the par five 558 yard up hill first af ter three good hits, I decided to play the other 17 holes from the friend lier green tees the members tend to use All the holes were fantastic in their own way but the ones I par ticular l y found worthy of mention were the tough par three fifth hole which was more than 200 yards in length with water tight on the right Holes six to nine are then on a com pletel y different piece of low l y ing flat land alongside the river The setting on this lovely sunny day was just stunning and I was lef t wishing I’d brought a rug and picnic! The bac k nine star ts with four par fours and then starts the c losing stretch that has to feature five of the best holes I have e ver played These inc lude two gorgeous par threes, the second of which is the 166 yard 17th hole where I made a memorable birdie two af ter hitting my six iron to about three feet Having holed out on 17 you then walk 20 or 30 yards to the bottom of a steep hillside where a lif t takes you 100 or so feet up to the 18th tee It really is a fab ulously quirky feature The 18th is pretty memorable too as it sweeps down and to the right and all the way back to the cir cular shaped c lubhouse Ready for a bite to eat, I headed into said c lubhouse where I was greeted by general manager Caroline D unne, who could not have been more helpful Af ter a quic k soup and sandwiches and a cup of tea I was ready to make my way back over to the east coast for a 40 minute dr ive to my final course of the trip Courtown Golf Club W ith an hour or so to spare before I had to head off back to D ublin Port to c atch my 8 30pm ferr y home, I had a quick catch up with Courtown’s general

HOW many of you reading this would like to score better? How many of you would like to reduce your handicap or take the money off your pals on a Saturday mor ning? I am guessing many of you will have raised your hand to at least one of those options Yet how many times have you ever come away from a round of golf feeling like you have scored c lose to the best of your abilit y? I would be willing to bet a good chunk of c ash on the fact most of the time you come off the course you feel like you have taken just about as many shots as you possibly could. Even at the highest le vels of the g ame this is a reall y common com plaint However, the newl y crowned US Seniors Open champion Padraig Har r ington is a notable exception to this He is one of the ver y few players who seems to squeez e the maximum from many of his rounds He so of ten turns what could have easily been a 74 or 75 and somehow finds a way of shooting under par The reason for this is Har r ington’s mag ical abilities with the shor t g ame honed o ver so many years. So what is his secret? Of course he has tremendous abil ity but for me his g reat strength is the fact he doesn’t just practice his shor t game he TRAINS his shor t game for the demands he faces out on the course S o many golfers practice but they don’t train and there is a BIG dif ference I have heard that Padraig has spent end less hours with his good fr iend Shane Lowr y playing chipping games from all around the g reen. Both of them conjur ing up mag ic al shots from all manner of lies and situations. To the outside obser ver watching the two of them together it may just seem like a regular practice session but be lie ve me if we look a little deeper under the sur face we see a highly ef fective form of training for both brain and body. The g ames they play will invol ve one ball from one unique location, a score will be invol ved and I am sure there is a healthy wager on the side In effect the ‘ games ’ they are playing are a direct replica of the exact demands the game itself places upon you. To re peat one ball, one unique location, a score and some for m of consequence Yet if we contrast this approach ag ainst what most golfers do, it is night and day. If anyone does actually practice their shor t game, it will gen erally be with a bunch of balls playing the same t y pe of shot o ver and o ver W hilst this for m of practice has some limited mer its if you are working on your chipping action you will gain so much more long term benefits by sim ulating the demands of the real game If you are ser ious about your game and your impro vement I would like you to commit for the next couple of months to playing a game I invented over 20 years ago called ‘Par 18’ Ver y simpl y you go to your chip ping area and you play nine differ net ‘ par twos’. Nine different holes from nine dif ferent loc ations where you simpl y chip on to the g reen and then see if you can hole out in as few strokes as possible, each hole a par two Keep a score against the overall par of 18 Do ever y thing you would nor mally do in a comp including using the golf ball you would nor mally play with. Keep your scores and I promise you that you will star t to see some prog ress At first it can be fr ustrating when you don’t get to hit another shot You have to live with and respond to your mistakes But you are challeng ing yourself in exactl y the same way the course itself will challenge you In time you will have evidence you are getting better Evidence you c an then take with you onto the course So from now on make a commitment to do more TRAINING for golf not just hitting balls.

Adjust the ball position relative to what flight the shot requires ie a low shot should be played off the back foot and a high shot off the front foot L earn from your ‘finish position’ Many amateurs finish the swing too high and with too much hinge The w r ists are too active throughout the swing, which is of ten caused by players tr ying to lift the ball up into the air (PIC 2) At the end of the swing tr y to keep the c lub and the lef t arm in a straight line The c lubhead should finish low and should have engaged with the grass cre ating a nice crisp strike on the ball (PIC 3)

Bare lies A question frequentl y asked during my chipping lessons is ‘how do I play it from a bare lie?’ The answer is to stand c loser to the ball, make sure the shaft moves vertically, have the toe down and heel up (PIC 4) Weight distribution should be 70/30 on the lead foot, use a putting stroke swing with minimal wrist hinge (PIC 5)
