GOLF EN ARGENTINA

Atlantic ocean, sierras and river unite authentic local tradition with a cosmopolitan aura, making for a vibrant itinerary. In these esteemed natural and urban settings, the golf courses stand out for their excellent level and challenging designs. Playing on them is definitely an unforgettable experience. One extremely interesting option for golfers who want to discover more about this tourist destination is a one-week trip being organised by Sammum Golf & Travel for March (8th to 14th) which includes a golf tournament held at four courses in Buenos Aires province. The Argentina Invitational competition offers major prizes including a free trip to the same country for the winner to defend their title next year. The tournament venues are the following: ESTANCIAS GOLF CLUB This recently inaugurated (2008) 18-hole par-71 course of almost 7,000 yards represents a great challenge, requiring a wide range of shots for a privileged strategic game. A total of 11 water hazards appear in more than half of the holes, some of them displayed as big lagoons. One of the characteristics of this layout of rolling fairways is the different shapes that the designer used for the creation of more than 100 bunkers that protect both tee shots and approaches. HURLINGHAM GOLF CLUB The first nine holes of Hurlingham Golf Club were inaugurated in 1892 (oldest in South America with the San Andres club) and the second nine in 1922. Like many of the English golf courses, it was built near a railway station. it is a 71-par course of 6,349 yards which, like many of the golf courses of those years, is characterises by small fast greens and narrow fairways. Hurlingham is always a good place to visit for its excellent maintenance and surroundings. OLIVOS GOLF CLUB Olivos Golf Club (establised 1931) is one of the best courses in the country and the region, as noted by Ángel Cabrera, Eduardo Romero and the Golf Digest magazine, ranking it among the top 100 courses around the world, and in the best position of the three courses from Argentina. This 27-hole parkland layout of 6,705 yards was designed by Luther Koontz, who used to work with Alister Mackenzie (the Augusta National architect). This parkland of large trees is laid out over a plot of land with a lot of ramps and movement. It is one of those courses with no “silly” holes, where you have to careful on every shot. GOLF CLUB ARGENTINO Named “Argentino” for being the first golf club in the country established by Argentines, the course is a very beautiful 18-hole par-72. This British parkland, of big and fast greens, is always presented in great shape from tee to green. Excellent grass on the greens provides speed. Strategic doglegs, water hazards very well located bunkers demand a lot of strategy to ensure a good score, while enjoying the sights of a magnificent park of large old trees.
