Royal Auckland & Grange Golf Club required a new set of enhanced capabilities in order to effectively run its ‘Major’ Club Events schedule, including Mixed & Singles Member Competitions, Member-Guests, and Club Championships. To achieve its ambitions and deliver a premium member event experience, the team looked to Golf Genius for the answers.

1. WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FOR IN YOUR TOURNAMENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE?
What we really wanted was something where people could easily sign up to an event and use well, no matter their age. Our membership age range goes from 10 right up to 97, so it was vital that we could make it as easy as possible for everyone, whether that was displaying results, sending communications out, letting them know who they’re playing with their tee times – all of that was really important to us.
2. HOW DO YOU USE GOLF GENIUS?
A prime example is our Middlemore Stakes, which is our annual Calcutta Cup event. 120 players make up the field, with the top 40 making it through to the second day. We auction those 40 teams off the night before and live score it as an aggregate pairs stableford. It means those 80 players who didn’t make it through continue to have a big interested in the event and are following along through the live scoring.
We also have our big opening and closing events of the year, which are teams of eight playing foursomes Ambrose, which is quite a unique event for us at the club. So being able to have players enter all seven players at once, or give them the option of entering in twos or fours and us pairing them up has been a really important feature that Golf Genius TM allows us to do.
3. WHAT SORT OF RETURN HAVE YOU SEE ON YOUR INVESTMENT?
The system has dramatically improved our member experience. To the point where members have been discussing and comparing entries for our events and found entries to be higher in the ones where we had Golf Genius in play.
When people assess a new piece of software, they tend to focus on the costs: “How much is it going to cost me?” My counter to that is that you need to go beyond the hard cost and look at how much efficiency it will deliver for staff, how much more participation it will create, the experience it will provide and the additional revenue it can help you to make. You’ll then be able to place the costs into better context. Also think about it like this: if your member’s experience is improved, how less likely are they to leave? Golf Genius TM is absolutely in that bracket.
