QUESTION AND ANSWER
1. WHAT IS THE JUNIOR RYDER CUP?
The Junior Ryder Cup began in 1997 after an exhibition match in 1995. Its goal is to promote friendship between the two continents, with teams comprising six boys and six girls under 18. It’s a fabulous event, and this year was particularly special because, for the first time, the final round was played at Marco Simone, the Ryder Cup course. It was a European victory, which hadn’t happened since 2004.
4. HOW HAS THE EVENT EVOLVED SINCE THEN?
In the early days, the Junior Ryder Cup was more of an internal event with little external exposure. But now, the players have the thrill of walking out onto the first tee in front of the general public, who can see more of the skills these boys and girls possess. It’s important to take the Junior Ryder Cup to the next level and give these young players a true Ryder Cup experience.
2. HOW WAS THE GOLF GENIUS TEAM INVOLVED?
This was the first year that Golf Genius was involved with the Junior Ryder Cup. All live scoring, including walking scorers, was powered by Golf Genius Tournament Management. It was a comprehensive system that fed both external and internal scoring data. This has become increasingly important as the Junior Ryder Cup’s profile grows. On-site support was provided by the Golf Genius team as well, ensuring that everything ran smoothly and advising the many volunteers on how to use the system.
It couldn’t have gone better. This year’s Ryder Cup and Junior Ryder Cup were both fantastic, and it all comes down to everyone working together.
4. HOW HAS THIS PARTNERSHIP ELEVATED JUNIOR RYDER CUP?
The Ryder Cup has been a leader in technology for some time now. In the past, people would attend and say they’d rather watch it on TV because of the better experience. But now, with jumbotrons on-site and live data updates, spectators get the best of both worlds—enjoying the excitement on the course while staying connected to the action. Technology is essential in modern golf, and Golf Genius has been at the forefront of that transformation.
