WELCOME TO THE EL REY THEATRE

Dean Edwards y o u r

Comedian Dean Edwards has been making his mark in comedy following two successful seasons as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” With such memorable impressions as Don Cheadle, Michael Jackson and Denzel Washington, as well as such original characters as “Man in Elevator” and “Cop#2”. Dean has pushed himself to the limits of creativity and exhaustion. Always the multi-tasker, Dean found the momentum to juggle his SNL career, his numerous standup appearances and multiple television appearances on tv. Dean most recently appeared in Showtime’s “Comics Without Borders, the nine-week comedy series which showcased multicultural stand-up comedians. Dean also work-shopped the character of Donkey for nearly 2 years, leading up to Dreamworks’ SHREK THE MUSICAL on Broadway. Dean has made several late night appearances, including “The Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Last Call with Carson Daly.” He is also a favorite and frequent guest on Byron Allen’s “Comic Unleashed,” and is frequently providing comedic commentary on various VH1 highlight shows. Director Malcolm Lee also chose Dean to finish Bernie Mac’s voice/ADR work on “Soul Men” after the comedian’s untimely death. Dean also provided the voiceover of Barack Obama’s on the new CNN show “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News”. Born in the Bronx and raised throughout New York, Dean’s travels made it easy for him to communicate with all walks of life. After dividing his college career between classes and a 6-year term in the U.S. Army reserves, Dean ultimately made the choice to devote his career to comedy. Although his fellow soldiers

loved his impressions of their drill sergeant, Dean spent many an afternoon doing push-ups to pay for his comedic talent. That talent paid off and Dean found his career after participating a college talent show. Armed with a degree in communications, Dean became an in-demand comic, and landed his first big break on Russell Simmons’ “Def Comedy Jam.” Though the show is renown for it’s blue humor, Dean found a way to break the traditional mold with his mainstream appeal. Subsequently, he was a featured comedian on “Showtime at the Apollo” a few years later. Dean followed his TV appearances by starring in numerous commercials, and also worked with Spike Lee on the hit feature film “The Original Kings of Comedy” Edwards has since earned a reputation as a headlining favorite at comedy clubs and colleges across the country. An international sensation, Dean was chosen to perform at the Jozi and Cape Town Comedy Festival’s in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa as well as Saudi Arabia in late, 2009. And even more recently, Dean completed a tour of the Middle East, performing in front of more than 10,000 fans: beginning in Cairo, Egypt and ending in Kuwait. Next up, Dean’s vocal talents can be heard in Dreamworks soon to be animated Halloween classic, SCARED SHREKLESS and can be seen in the independent feature, APRIL FOOLS. Dean’s first comedy CD, “REAL TALK WITH FAKE PEOPLE, Volume 1” debuted in 2009 and he plans to release an hour long special/DVD with Salient Media in late-2010. Dean was the host of the 10th Annual Golden Trailer Awards.

AKIVA SCHAFFER A gifted writer and innovative force behind the camera, Schaffer is poised to lead a new generation of directors with his fresh vision of true comedy. Schaffer is currently a writer/director for “Saturday Night Live” and has received an Emmy and two Writers Guild Awards for his work on the show. Along with his writing partners Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, he is responsible for creating the popular SNL Digital Shorts, which have re-invigorated the series and spurred many water-cooler moments over the past four seasons. Some of the most notable shorts include Emmy Award winning “D**k In A Box” and its sequel “Motherlover” (featuring Justin Timberlake), “Lazy Sunday,” “J**z In My Pants,” “Peyton Manning’s United Way,” “I’m On A Boat” (featuring T-Pain), and many others, all of which Schaffer co-wrote and directed. Many of the videos have garnered unprecedented online interest and acclaim. Taccone, Samberg and Schaffer, collectively known as “The Lonely Island,” have been friends since junior high school in Berkeley, CA. In 2000, the trio began writing, directing and producing its own brand of comedy and showcasing it on their website www.thelonelyisland.com. The Lonely Island’s debut album, Incredibad, was released by Universal Republic in February 2009 and became the #1 comedy album of the

84

year, featuring the Grammy nominated platinum single “I’m On A Boat” which has sold over a million copies in the U.S. Schaffer made his feature length directorial debut with “Hot Rod” for Paramount Pictures, starring Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Ian McShane, Sissy Spacek, Isla Fisher, Bill Hader and Danny McBride. Schaffer is a graduate of the film department of UC Santa Cruz.

ANDY SAMBERG With a diverse range of comedic talents, Andy Samberg is a captivating and hilarious leading man on screens both big and small. Samberg will next lend his voice to Sony Pictures Animation’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, starring along side Anna Faris, James Caan, and Bill Hader. He recently starred in the Dreamworks feature “I Love You, Man”, with Jason Segel and Paul Rudd. In the summer of 2008, Samberg was heard on the big screen in Vanguard Animation’s “Space Chimps”, as the voice of main character “Ham III” alongside Jeff Daniels, Cheryl Hines, and Stanley Tucci. His feature debut came in August 2007 in Paramount’s “Hot Rod” opposite Ian McShane, Sissy Spacek, Isla Fisher and Bill Hader. Currently, Samberg stars in his fourth season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” Samberg is best

known for his innovative SNL Digital Shorts which have re-invigorated the series and spurred many water-cooler moments over the past two seasons. The first significant breakthrough for him was the music video “Lazy Sunday,” a performance collaboration with SNL alum Chris Parnell. “Lazy Sunday” was an undeniable online phenomenon that amassed over five million hits on YouTube.com within a few days and sparked its own legion of Internet imitations. The controversy surrounding the legal ramifications of online video content thrust the story into the media spotlight, highlighting Samberg as the poster-child for a new generation of DIY filmmakers and comics. The following season, Samberg, again made waves with the short video “D**k in a Box,” starring himself and Justin Timberlake in a spoof on early-nineties R&B. The song reached unprecedented levels of popularity both online and in print, culminating in Samberg joining Timberlake on-stage at Madison Square Garden in February 2007 and performing the song live for more than 18,000 fans. In September 2007, “D**k in a Box” was honored with a Creative Emmy for “Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.” Samberg, along with his Lonely Island partners Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, have recently completed their first full length album “Incredibad” which was released by Universal Republic Records on Tuesday, February 10th. “Incredibad” features old favorites such as ““D**k in a Box” and “Natalie’s Rap” (featuring actress Natalie Portman and Chris Parnell), as well as new musical creations featuring a diverse arsenal of guest-artists including hip hop impresario T-Pain, Grammy winning superstar

THE

Norah Jones, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Bay area rapper and The Click founder E-40, and comedy hellion and Tenacious D-veteran Jack Black. Prior to joining “Saturday Night Live,” Samberg performed stand-up comedy in both New York and Los Angeles for seven years and was featured on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” in 2005. In addition, he started “The Lonely Island” with his childhood friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who are current writers on “Saturday Night Live.” Thanks to their innovative contributions to “Saturday Night Live” and their previous work as “The Lonely Island,” WIRED Magazine honored Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone with a WIRED Rave award for Television in 2006, alongside geneticists and fellow online pioneers. Samberg attended college at UC Santa Cruz and graduated from NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts with a film degree in 2000. He currently resides in New York City.

JORMA TACCONE A versatile and creative literary talent, Taccone is also an engaging and appealing performer who made his feature acting debut in Paramount’s 2007 summer feature release Hot Rod; he appeared opposite Andy Samberg, Ian McShane, Sissy Spacek, Isla Fisher, and Bill Hader as Andy’s geeky and lovable half-brother “Kevin”. This summer, he starred in

THE

Universal Pictures’ feature film Land of the Lost, starring along side Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, and Anna Friel as “Chaka”. Most recently, Taccone directed the feature film version of MacGruber, based on the well-known SNL sketch and starring Will Forte. In the fall, Taccone will return to “Saturday Night Live” as a writer/composer and director. Along with his writing partners Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer, he is responsible for creating the popular SNL Digital Shorts, which have re-invigorated the series and spurred many water-cooler moments over the past two seasons. Some of the most notable shorts include “D**k In A Box” (with Justin Timberlake), “Lazy Sunday” (a rap about “The Chronicles of Narnia”) and “The Natalie Portman Rap” – all of which Taccone co-wrote and composed music for with the help of his brother, Asa. Taccone has also directed several digital shorts including “MacGruber” (with Will Forte), “Business Meeting” (with Rainn Wilson and Arcade Fire), “Roy Rules”, and “Sloths”, and he was honored with a Writers Guild Award for his work on the 2005/2006 season of the show. Taccone, Samberg and Schaffer, collectively known as “The Lonely Island,” have been friends since junior high school in Berkeley, CA. In 2000, the trio began writing, directing and producing their own brand of comedy and showcasing it on their website www.thelonelyisland. com. Some highlights include one of Channel101.com’s longest running primetime shows, “The ‘BU,” a parody of “The O.C.” in which Taccone starred alongside Sarah Chalke (“Scrubs”) as a misunderstood teenage ninja and a sketch comedy pilot created for Fox titled “Awesometown.”

RUTH VITALE Ruth Vitale has been at the forefront of independent film production and distribution for almost twenty years. She has built and managed several independent companies from their inception, in addition to launching the careers of many successful filmmakers. Most recently, Vitale was Managing Director, Business Development for OurHistree. com. She developed the business strategies for the Internet startup and worked with the CEO to secure corporate clients. Prior to that, Vitale was President of First Look Pictures, the newly formed theatrical distribution entity of First Look Studios. Releases included John Hillcoat’s The Proposition and Paris, Je T’aime. Vitale founded and served as Co-President of Paramount Classics from 1998-2005, an autonomous division of Paramount Pictures that

specialized in bringing daring, offbeat, and unconventional films from the US and around the world to contemporary audiences. Working in partnership with Co-President David Dinerstein, Vitale demonstrated a commitment to independent filmmaking and the development of promising new talent, in addition to running a financially profitable independent standalone. When Vitale formed Paramount Classics, she quickly acquired films that drew widespread critical acclaim. These films included The Virgin Suicides, The Girl on the Bridge, Sunshine, and You Can Count On Me. In the five years to follow, Ruth continued to champion independent and iconoclastic filmmakers. Acquisition credits include Edward Burns’ Sidewalks of New York, Neal Slavin’s Focus, and Barbet Schroeder’s Our Lady of the Assassins. Following on that success, in 2002 Paramount Classics released some of its most highprofile truly independent films that included Bloody Sunday and Mostly Martha. In 2003, under Vitale, Paramount Classics had tremendous success with Man on the Train and The Singing Detective. In 2004, Paramount Classics championed Jacob Estes’ directorial debut Mean Creek, Roger Michell’s Enduring Love, and Brad Anderson’s psychological thriller The Machinist. In 2005, Paramount Classics released a wide array of films – from world festival favorite Schultze Gets the Blues to Slamdance’s crowd pleaser Mad Hot Ballroom to the most talkedabout film of Sundance, Hustle & Flow, Before joining Paramount Classics, Ruth Vitale was President of Fine Line Features from January 1995 to January 1998. Under her aegis, Fine Line released such highlights as the Academy Award-winning

Jeroen is well known for introducing the world to the timeless “Priceless” campaign for MasterCard running in over 170 countries. His company is a pioneer in social media and helps organizations and companies launch products, new brands or revives old brands and products. forgotten how to ‘kill their darlings’ in order to achieve a lasting idea; believing that when an idea lasts and is the right idea for the brand and the company behind it, the client’s investment pays off much better. Jeroen is on the board of the Gold Coast International Film Festival in New York which will be launched next year.

EDGAR WRIGHT

MARC WEBB Marc Webb started his career directing commercial and music videos for artists such as Green Day, Fergie and My Chemical Romance. He has several MTV VMAs™ including 2009’s Best Director award for Green Day’s “21 Guns,” 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI’s “Miss Murder,” and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects’ “Move Along.” The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance. His Feature film debut was the acclaimed “500 days of Summer” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. The film was nominated to two Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture (musical or comedy) and won an independent Spirit Award for best original screenplay. Webb was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review.

Although he’s only in his mid-thirties, award winning filmmaker Edgar Wright’s list of credits reads like that of a seasoned veteran. With projects like the UK series turned international cult phenomenon “Spaced”, the rom-zom-com “Shaun of the Dead”, and action/comedy opus “Hot Fuzz”, he’s evolved from a young film geek wanting to prove himself into one of the most sought after geeks working in film today. This summer Wright is set to release his first U.S. production of the comic book movie “Scott Pilgrim Versus The World” for Universal Pictures, which he co-wrote with Michael Bacall and stars an ensemble cast including Michael Cera, Jason Schwartzman, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Kieren Culkin, and more. Raised in Somerset, England, Wright embarked on his first epic at age14 with a Super 8 short entitled, “Rolf Harris Saves the World”. He continued to make many more shorts after he won a Video 8 camera in a Comic Relief contest for his film “I Want to Get into the Movies”, an animated allegory about wheelchair access. At age 20 he made “A Fistful of Fingers”, a no budget feature film starring local teen actors and shot on 16mm.

THE

The unlikely British western was put on limited theatrical release and paved the way for his foray into television with the Paramount Comedy Channel. There he would direct the fledgling sketch show “Mash & Peas” for future “Little Britain” stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams and “Asylum” where he would join forces with future collaborators Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson. Still in his early twenties, Wright also directed several comedy shows for the BBC including, “Alexei Sayle’s Merry Go Round”, “Is It Bill Bailey?”, “Murder Most Horrid”, and “Sir Bernard’s Stately Homes”, as well as “French and Saunders Christmas Special”. Wright gained notice in the UK when he directed two seasons of “Spaced” for Channel 4. The series, which starred Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, won two British Comedy Awards, was twice nominated at the BAFTA awards and once at the International Emmys. Over the years the show built an international cult following and in 2008 Wright, along with the Pegg and Stevenson, embarked on a four city tour of the U.S. in honor of the DVD release. The series served as a launching pad for Wright’s first feature film as well as his continued collaboration with Simon Pegg with “Shaun of the Dead”, which he directed and co-wrote with Pegg. The film gained attention and critical praise internationally and was nominated for two BAFTA awards. Named by TIME magazine as one of the top 25 horror films of all time, it earned an Empire Award for Best British Film and a British Independent Film Award for Best Screenplay as well as a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. Original zombie master George Romero went as far as to proclaim it as his “favorite zombie film.”
