Frank’s Travels - Confessions of a holiday Rep part 4, Portugal After I had completed my tour of duty in Cyprus I returned to England in May, and once again offered my services to Lincolnshire Ambulance Service as a volunteer car driver. I loved doing this job and would recommend it to anyone who feels like giving something back to the community. While working in Cyprus I was lucky enough to meet up with some Rep's from a small holiday company called,"Sun World"which was based in Bromley. It was a company which seemed to have a real family atmosphere, so after a few weeks back in the UK I gave their office a ring. Bearing in mind I was now 60 years old I thought I might be pushing my luck but I was invited to come along for a chat. Firstly I thought I should clear the decks by resigning from Cosmos and that should clear the way for whatever was up for grabs so, tongue in cheek, I handed in my notice and hoped I hadn't committed a major faux-pas. I had a wonderful day with Sun World seeing their set-up, and taking part in a series of One-on-One interviews. At the end of a very long day I was offered a job at one of their locations in Portugal. Having divested myself of all things Cosmos I was eventually kitted out with my new company uniform, and put on stand-by for a move in October to a hotel in the Algarve. For those who are not familiar with that area of Portugal it is the stretch of coastline running the complete length of Portugal from the Spanish border in the East to the Atlantic ocean in the West. The name Algarve comes from the Arabic 'Al Gharb" meaning The West because the Atlantic was as far west as the Arab conquerors of that area ever ventured. In October I flew to Faro, caught the transfer coach out to my hotel and was very pleasantly surprised when I saw the location. The hotel was situated right on the beach with a flight of stone steps leading from the swimming pool patio down onto a sandy beach that seemed to go on forever. Just 3 kilometers to the East of the hotel ran the river Guardiana which forms the border between Portugal, and Spain.

As usual I had to complete the various excursions which were shown in the holiday brochure, and these included trips to Lisbon, and a wonderful old town called Sagres which lies to the far West of the Algarve. I found this town more interesting to me than Lisbon for two very good reasons, one being the brewery where the very good Sagres beer was brewed, but the other far more important reason was that this town was famous for the navigational school established by Prince Henry The Navigator. This man was a navigational genius and he established Portugal as the leading maritime nation of the known world long before Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) discovered the New World. The main difference was that Henry encouraged his explorers to go East instead of West although they did settle Brazil. If you check your map of the world you will discover that the Portuguese established a settlement on the West coast of Africa at Angola which they colonized. They then sailed round the Cape of Good Hope and along the East coast of Africa where they did the same with Mozambique. They then sailed across the Indian ocean to the Indian mainland and established their presence in Goa, and having done that they sailed round the south of India, and headed for Malaya where they settled Malacca on the West coast. From here they ventured even further East and grabbed a chunk of the Chinese mainland calling it Macao. All these colonies and settlements were up and running long before the British, French or Dutch ventured into this area. As you can imagine by now I was in possession of a veritable mine of local history ready for my first guests to arrive. I hope I have not digressed too far off the beaten track but I just had to let you know some of the history of this lovely country. Until next time watch how you go, stay healthy and enjoy living Frank

SUMMER BUDGET- What has changed for readers of Golden Times In previous articles we have discussed Inheritance Tax and Care Fees Planning.

INCORPORATING MENNEER SHUTTLEWORTH

Specialists in: Advising for later life• Wills and Probate Conveyancing • Family Law Civil Litigation • Dispute Resolution

From April 2017, the Government will initially bring in an additional £100,000 per person Nil Rate Band allowance over and above the existing £325,000 allowance. It will only apply to a deceased’s interest in property left to children and grandchildren, unless it is sold after the budget when protections will be put in place to ensure that those who downsize or live in rented accommodation in later life are not disadvantaged. The main residence allowance will then increase by £25,000 each financial year up to April 2020. However, the basic £325,000 will remain fixed until 2021. Not everyone will benefit from the property related increased allowance from April 2017. The 2nd main issue has been the postponement in the capping of the cost of nursing care from April 2016 to 2020 at the earliest. We believe that concerns relating to inheritance tax and funding the cost of care still remain and if you require further advice please feel free to contact me.

Self Help Books by Julia Meanwell “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers”. Charles W Eliot There is a new understanding of the importance of adults enjoying reading, and reading for pleasure. Research suggests that regular reading is associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of dementia. It can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. Participating in social reading activities such as reading groups for instance can enable people to feel less isolated. It can also help with the development of mental concentration and mental agility at the same time as increasing self-confidence and motivation. For well over 30 years now I have accumulated many inspirational books and now have my very own extremely well-stocked personal development library. Naturally it is my belief that on the whole most people would benefit from seeing a professional therapist, I am aware that not everyone will be able to fully engage in the process. There is clinical evidence to show that books can offer effective psychological support to the reader and of course no appointment is necessary as you can read at any time, any place and at any pace. One of the first self-help books I read that made any

She suggested that by accepting fear as a natural part of psychological development we have the ability to re-educate ourselves and embrace positive thinking. WHAT ARE YOU LEAVING YOUR CHILDREN? Your assets may be at risk from one or more outside factors. Don't take that risk, take advice now.

PROTECT YOUR ASSETS NOW ! For peace of mind contact David on: 07718 155740 for a free, no obligation consultation in your own home. www.clshastings.co.uk

Are you worried about having to sell your home to pay for care costs? Over 50,000 homes were sold in the last year for that reason but it can be easily avoided.

Are your affairs in order? Are your assets protected?

If you have to go into care you may be "means tested" by your Local Authority to assess your ability to pay for that care. Under current rules, if you have assets that total more than £23,250 (in England), which could include the value of your home, you will be required to fund your care in full – a care home will cost £500-£800 a week or more. The Department of Health has confirmed the cap on care fees contained in the Care Act 2014, planned for introduction in April 2016 and set at £72,000, will now be delayed until at least 2020. Many are now wondering whether this cap will ever be introduced. Homeowners remain at risk of seeing a lifetime’s hard work swallowed up in care fees, and are advised to take action now. Contact Collective Legal Solutions and discover what steps you can take to protect the inheritance you plan to leave your loved ones.

It's not too late to put it right. Talk to David NOW about your options.

Gardening tips for late Autumn & Early Winter from Phoenix Gardening.

Lots to do in the garden, winter dig, particularly in heavy soils and let the frost help break up the soil. It’s time to plant any bare rooted fruit bushes, trees, or shrubs. Prune blackcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries and protect late cauliflowers by bending the leaves over the head. It’s a talking point but you can remove the tops of herbaceous perennials, or, leave them to provide some winter interest, but remove any damaged or diseased stems. In the greenhouse check to see what minimum temperatures are being achieved, and protect vulnerable plants in the garden.

Finish picking any late apples, check bulbs, corms and tubers in storage for condition, also check bulbs in pots for early flowering. If you can, protect sensitive alpine plants by covering them with a pane of glass. Before laying the mower up for the winter, service it, or get it done professionally. Getting more ambitious if you have a hedge to plant now’s the time. Check the condition of any stakes or canes and give them a clean if necessary, you can always stand them in a pot of wood preservative for a day if you haven’t done so before.

Ladies, look away now... …this column is just for the men. Gentlemen, how is your Christmas Shopping coming on? Got lots of lovely ideas to delight her on Christmas morning? Or are you transfixed with fear at the thought of getting it wrong yet again? I love helping men choose lovely clothes or beauty products for their loved ones and the relief on their faces when I offer them a gift-wrapped present ready to go under the tree is wonderful. But what do you do when you are standing in Harrods and you just don’t know which bracelet will suit her best? What do you mean, you were thinking more of a pair of slippers from Debenhams? Uh-oh, have you got a problem. Faint heart never won fair lady and I offer these few suggestions to put a smile on her face and get you that extra roastie at lunch time. • First and foremost, listen, take hints. Ask for and take advice from female friends and relations. Remember that shop assistants want to sell, so listen to their patter with caution. • Steer well clear of anything to do with cleaning, tidying or refurbishment in general. No matter what she says, she does not want a new steam iron. Everyday objects have no place around the tree! • Buy something which she would not purchase herself because it’s too decadent. She will love you for it. A gorgeous silk scarf, a cashmere shawl, a bottle of perfume, gorgeous cosmetics, a designer handbag. Take risks – as long as you make her feel ok about changing it you can’t go wrong. • Take her best friend shopping with you. Tell her your budget – then watch her blow it! As long as you can afford it, buy it. You’ll soon forget about the bill but you’ll remember her delight for ever. • Think “style” rather than “glamour”. Classic gifts will be appreciated for years. • Keep receipts and not just for the risky presents; embrace exchanging goods as a learning experience.

• Do not buy anything you would like her to wear “for a change”. That sexy lingerie may float your boat but I suggest you keep that for a surprise present some other time of the year. Christmas is a time to show appreciation, not let her know you want something! • If you are really struggling, vouchers are OK but make sure they offer something a bit different. • Surprise her with small presents dotted throughout the day - maybe on a theme. Add little clues to the labels or create a multi-layered parcel so she finds a clue (or a little gift) in each layer. • Add some fun to the procedure. My husband delights in sneaking a tin of grotesque Chinese chow mein into my stocking every year! It is a tradition the whole family enjoys. • Wrap presents with loving care. If in doubt, ask a friend in return for some lovely chocs and wine. • Then sit back, pour a well-earned drink and feel very satisfied, knowing she will be telling all her friends what a wonderful gift-giver you are. Good luck! And let me know how you get on Michèle x I am Michèle Duke, an independent fashion and beauty consultant with gorgeous collections for women.
