We've barely packed away our pumpkins and finished off the last of our (trick or) treats and already Christmas fever is starting to take hold. The kids may be distracted by some firework displays during early November, but after that, we'll be jingling all the way through to New Year's Eve! Childcare Choosing the right childcare provider for your child can be a daunting task for parents, so to help out parents taking this step for the first time, here are some tips and hints: It's always a good idea to visit several childcare providers, at each one, look for: • Trained and experienced staff, they should be ready to learn and respond to the individual needs of your child. • Children who seem happy and purposeful, busy and engaged but comfortable in their surroundings. • Safe and clean premises that offer a warm welcome. • Planned and organised activities While visiting a childcare provider you should ask questions to make sure you're making an informed choice. Questions to consider are: • What qualifications do the staff have? • What is the ratio of staff to children and how many children attend each day? • Are food and nappies provided for the children? • How is the children's behaviour managed, is there a policy for discipline? • Does each child have a key worker (one member of staff who has main responsibility for each child)? Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. He seems unable to remember the basic number bonds no matter what we do and he really struggles within class. The SENCo within his school asked for the Educational Psychologist to undertake some assessment work with him and it has now been suggested that he has dyscalculia. What is dyscalculia is it dyslexia with numbers? Dyscalculia is a specific learning difference that causes children to struggle with maths. It isn’t as well-known as dyslexia. However, some researchers now think it may be almost as common. Dyscalculia like dyslexia is a brain-based condition, that makes it hard to make sense of numbers and mathematical concepts. Some children with dyscalculia find understanding the basic concepts of number really difficult. Other children understand the logic behind the maths but are not sure how and when to apply this when solving problems. The most common problem is with “number sense.” This is an intuitive understanding of how numbers work, and how to compare and estimate quantities on a number line. Most researchers agree that number sense is at the core of maths learning. If children don’t understand the basics about how numbers work, learning maths and using it every day can be very frustrating. Children who struggle with maths can cause confusion as they are very able to work well and succeed in other areas. This can then lead to low self esteem and anxiety if the difference is not identified early and supported within the school and at home. There are many tools and strategies that can help with dyscalculia. The trick is finding the ones that work best for your child. Dyscalculia is a lifelong condition, but that doesn’t mean your child can’t be happy and successful. Things to look out for: • Has trouble recognizing numbers and symbols. • Has difficulty learning and recalling basic math facts, such as 2 + 4 = 6. • Struggles to identify +, – and other signs and use them correctly. • May still use fingers to count instead of using more sophisticated strategies. • Has trouble writing numerals clearly or putting them in the correct column. • Has trouble coming up with a plan to solve a maths problem.

• Struggles to understand words related to maths, such as greater than and less than. • Has trouble telling his left from his right, and has a poor sense of direction. • Has difficulty remembering phone numbers and game scores. • Avoids playing games like Risk that involve number strategy. • Has trouble telling time. If you have noticed any of these difficulties with your child then it is important to talk them over with their class teacher, who can share their professional observations and knowledge about your child. If both you and your class teacher are worried then it is really important to talk to the schools SENCo who can then work with all concerned to make sure that your child is assessed and strategies put in place to support them in class. Strategies that can help your child are: pre learning and post learning. This means that you can work on what the class will undertake at home to support what is going on in school. You can then support your child’s learning by going over things at different times to reinforce what they have learnt. Using a range of games that use number is another way of having fun but also supporting their understanding of number. Getting children to pay for shopping and helping them with sorting the correct coins and checking change is a life lesson that is really valuable and will support them in the future as well as with their maths. Creating a ‘Handy Hints to Maths’ workbook is also a good way of supporting your child be more independent with their maths. This can show how to do column addition and describe when it is used as a reminder for when they have forgotten what to do. Dear Alison, Our son is 2 years and 4 months old and has just started at our local Nursery. He has always been slow to speak and has trouble being understood. His nursery teacher is concerned about his poor speech and language but says there is nothing she can do. What can we do to support him? When children are young the first person to talk to is your health visitor. She will be able to undertake a basic speech and language assessment and talk to you about how to get some help. I would suggest that you talk to her and share your concerns.

To support your son understanding and being understood you can use a sign language called Makaton. Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Check out their web site www.makaton. org It is widely used in schools and nursery’s and is easy to learn. If you speak to your nursery SENCo then they will be able to let you know where the nearest training is. It is something that they will also be able to use in school with your son to help him communicate. It would also be useful to talk to Nursery about a referral to the Speech and Language Team in your local authority. Some authorities wont take a referral until the child is 2 ½ years old. Nursery would be able to undertake an assessment that will show what your son is able to do and how this compares with an average child of his age. This information will be really important if and when you need to involve the Speech and Language team. Dear Alison, Our daughter has just moved into year 3 and is really struggling to adjust to the new more focused way of working. She is a little one who has never been able to settle and is always on the move and into everything. She loves her trampoline and playing in the garden but really struggles to settle to reading or practicing her spellings. What can we do to help her? Some children need to move to get what their body is telling them they need. These children are children who may have Sensory Processing Disorders. We all have filters that sensor the information that comes into our body from our senses. They filter out information that we do not need – this may be noise, light or how our body feels. Some children seem to have different filters and seem very aware of noises or other stimulation and find ignoring them very difficult, for other children they seem to not be aware at all. This is a very simple explanation of sensory children. We know that some children with Sensory Processing difficulties need lots of body feedback as they don’t seem to register the feedback their body is sending them, they seek more. For these children settling, sitting still and focusing is very hard to do and they need far more experiences of being still and getting their sensory needs met. For these children a sit and move cushion (which you can buy from amazon) or a theraball (again from amazon) allows them to move and get good sensory feedback which then enables them to sit and concentrate. Yoga is also a really good way to encourage children to experience stillness and to calm their body’s. It would be worth talking to the SENCo at your child’s school and asking for a referral to the Occupational Therapy Team. The OT’s are the ones who can assess and diagnose children with Sensory Processing difficulties and support school and home in meeting their needs.
What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •
Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,

Failure to learn,
•
Withdrawal,
•
Difficult behaviour,
•
Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,
•
Violence or aggressive outbursts,

We're often reminded that children need to be active for at least 60 minutes each day, but we're not always told why. There are obvious benefits, exercise helps your child maintain a healthy weight, it also encourages strong bones & muscles, but there are other poitive effects too. Studies have shown that exercise enhances the brain's metabolism and that active children have improved memory and are better able to concentrate during the school day. So, build a den, climb a tree, jump in some puddles, walk the dog in the rain, build a snowman, fly a kite, go paddling in your wellies, climb a hill, get lost in the woods. Motcombe Playgroup Motcombe Pool offers a small friendly Playgroup, based in the heart of the community, in Old Town Eastbourne. Reading Corner Always a great gift idea, books can bring hours of pleasure and stimulation to young minds. Sharing a book is a fantastic way for grown ups & kids to spend time together. This month, we've been sent a selection of books to review by prolific children's publisher, Maverick. This autumn, Maverick have released three new picture books by three brand new authors. We've handed them over to our expert book reviewer, Jessica. Jessica (That's her on the right of the page) is 12, comes from Hastings and absolutely loves reading books and writing stories.
Not without my whale By Billy Coughlan, illustrated by Villie Karabatzia This story is about a boy who refuses to go anywhere without his whale. When he takes the whale to school with him, all sorts of crazy things happen. I thought the illustrations of the whale and it's antics were very funny. The book was inspired by the author's son's fear of going to school.
Aerodynamics of biscuits By Clare Helen Welsh, illustrated by Sophia Touliatou I thought this was a very imaginative book, about a boy who seems to really love biscuits. When he finds the biscuit barrel empty his imagination begins to run amok. I thought the characters in this book were quirky and lots of fun.
As quiet as a mouse by Karen Owen, illustrated by Evgenia Golubeva Edgar is an elephant who gets into trouble with his mum for making too much noise, and this book tells the story of how he learns to be "quiet as a mouse". I thought the illustrations in this book were very cute and I can imagine it being an excellent bed-time story for younger children.
Along with the three new books above, Maverick have also released the popular "Hedgehugs" books (pictured left) as board books. This makes them perfect for the littlest book lovers as the glosslaminated pages will keep the gorgeous illustrations wipe-clean and baby-proof! Lily's Festive Fun Hello readers, it's me, Lily back again with another fun page ! At the bottom of the page, you'll find a Christmas word-search that I made for you. Look for all the words listed underneath the grid. Remember they might be running backwards or forwards, horizontally or diagonally, good luck with finding them! Happy 80th Birthday to the De La Warr Pavilion On 12 December 1935 the Pavilion , the first public building to be built in the Modernist style in the UK , opened its doors to the people of Bexhill and beyond. Pioneering in design and structure, revolutionary in spirit and aspirational in its vision, it captured people’s imagination like no other building of its age and was soon dubbed “The People’s Palace”.
