Eastern inspiration for new mums Walking into a pharmacy or health store in the UK you might be forgiven for assuming that nutritional support for new mums only comes in the form of tablets and pills. Whilst in the West this is the way dietary supplementation has gone, many women in Asian countries still swear by a more traditional approach. This traditional approach involves healthy homemade food bars, or muesli, which use plant based ingredients. The bars not only provide a natural energy source, to help beat the fatigue and tiredness that comes with being a new mum, but may also help with lactation and milk supply.

The recipes for these bars are passed from one generation to the next and have been used for over a century. Now Sharon Kaur, with a little help from a nutritional expert, has launched a ‘feeding food bar’ based on her family’s recipe in the UK; such that we can all benefit from this more natural approach to nutritional support for mums. freida’s pantry ‘Feeding Food Bar’ contains a combination of nuts, seeds and oats. These provide a host of important nutrients for both mother and baby; including omegas 3 & 6, a great source of energy and important for the development of the nervous system, and natural proteins which are vital for a strong and healthy body. The bars also contain fennel seeds, often said to be a ‘galactalogue’, a substance which can increase milk supply, and may be of particular use for breastfeeding women. Perhaps most importantly, the bars taste delicious with a soft flapjack style consistency, which make them the perfect snack for new mums and the ideal treat to slip into a handbag, as nutritionist Sarah Noyce from Matters for Health explains “Many of the milk boosting products available can be unappetising, for example vitamin supplements and medicines, and are often costly too. Freida’s Feeding Food Bars not only taste great, but are perfectly balanced to give mums what they need to potentially help improve their milk supply” The new bars are on sale at selected health food stockists, Ocado, WholeFoods Market and through www. FreidaPantry.com Mums should eat one a day for maximum benefit.

Ask Alison...

Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past 22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice. For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk. In her regular “question and answer” page she’ll be using her experience to help readers & their children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison, email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk

Dear Alison, Our daughter is moving into Year 3 at school. She has had the same teacher in Year 1 and 2 and has been extremely happy. She is not looking forward to moving into Year 3 as her new class teacher is not someone she knows. She has started having bad dreams and doesn’t want to talk about her new teacher or class and just keeps telling us she is staying with her old teacher. What can we do to help her get ready for September and then to help her settle when she gets there? We are both dreading this. Transitions can be highly emotional times for many children however it is important to enable them to process the conflicting thoughts and emotions. When this is done then children can experience them positively. Transitions are about remembering the past and celebrating what has been achieved and the memories of this time, experiencing the sadness and loss of these and then looking to the future and managing the anxiety that this may create. For many children it is the ‘mess’ of things they are sad to leave behind the anxieties that thinking about the future creates and the excitement of what is to come that causes them difficulties as they are not able to unravel this and manage the conflicting emotions.

10

Helping children process this and manage the different emotions that transitions evoke is really important. One way to do this is to create a Year Book. This can include all the things they have done - the best bits and the worse bits – photos are really good to add and also any pieces of work that she has brought home, drawings and stories. Include all the things she has done in the year not just school. Put them in order and ‘notice’ how her work has changed. Focus on what they are now able to do. You can use the phrases ‘Do you remember when you couldn’t …… wow that seems so long ago as you can now so easily ……..’ This collecting and remembering will help celebrate and capture what they have done. Give space and time to feel sad and experience the loss of that time. It is important to allow children to experience strong and sometimes difficult emotions as they grow as this is the foundation of their ability to cope with life later. Help them express their sadness through pictures, paintings, words or art. If you are able to be with them and do this then it shows your

daughter that these strong difficult emotions are manageable and not something to be frightened of in the future. Remind her that she will be able to visit her old teacher and that she will see her in the playground and at lunch time. Once children have experienced the loss of something then you can start to think about the future and what she is worried about. Try and help her think about how to solve these worries don’t just tell her what to do, empower her to think and explore ways of working things out for herself. Once she has gone through these things you will find it is much easier for her to explore and share what she is looking forward to. Dear Alison, We have a daughter in Year 8 at secondary school. She has facebook and has enjoyed staying in touch with friends and family. She has always managed this with great maturity. Over the summer she has been withdrawn and quiet and not her bubbly self. We recently discovered via a friend that she was being bullied by a group of other girls who were leaving horrible messages and being really unkind. We are really upset that she didn’t come to us with this but kept it to herself. How can we help her understand that we want to help and what can we do? Facebook is something that I have many emails about including what to do when things go horribly wrong for young people. I fully understand that you are feeling upset that your daughter hasn’t come to you for help however she will have her reasons for this. I would suggest that you let her know in a calm way that you know what has been happening and that you would like her to know that you are there to help her think about how she could manage all this. I would also suggest that you let her know that you won’t just take her off facebook but that you would like her to learn how to deal with other people who are not as thoughtful or sensible as she is. Research tells us that the main reason that children do not share difficulties that they are having on facebook is because they are worried that parents will just take them off and not let them use it any more. Once she feels safe that you will help her and not take over or take her off facebook I think you will find that she will be prepared to share what has been going on with you. When she does you need to try and remember to listen and to help her think about

the different ways she can deal with things. Support her exploring the different scenarios and then choose what to do. Think of this as laying the foundations for experiences to come. You want to let her know that you are there to support and help her think about things but that you also believe that she has the skills and abilities to solve her own problems. Dear Alison, Our 7 year old son has always been extremely close to his Grandfather. After he was born my parents looked after our son as I had to return to work. He spent 5 hours every day with them and particularly my father. Earlier this year my father died suddenly and my son has really been struggling to come to terms with this. What can we do to help him? Managing losing someone special is very difficult for many people and for a child or young adult can be very hard to process and make sense of. It is likely to set in motion a range of questions and thinking that he will need time and space to process. We are not very good in this country in managing the bereavement process which evokes a range of feelings and emotions over time. Your son is facing this for the first time. As the death of your father was a shock there was not time to prepare or adjust to things and so the death has been traumatic for him. The most important thing is to let him know that you are there if he would like to talk or if he feels this is too painful for you to manage then you could offer for him to work with a therapist as a way of helping him process and manage this time. His school will be able to access specially trained staff therapists that work with young people trying to manage the loss of someone very special. Let him know that this time of loss and bereavement is a complex one and that he will feel up and down for several months but that it is a natural way of coming to terms with losing a very important person from his life. There is a lovely book called ‘Badgers Passing Gifts’ by Susan Varley which you might like to buy for him. It talks about a group of woodland animals that loose a well loved friend – the badger and how they are able to talk about the gifts he has left them all. It is beautifully written and may help think of the gifts that your father has left you all.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom. Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development. Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as: •

Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,

Failure to learn,

Withdrawal,

Difficult behaviour,

Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,

Violence or aggressive outbursts,

Physical symptoms,

Anxiety,

Difficulties with transitions,

Restlessness and an inability to focus,

Anyone who’s tried to keep up with a young child will know that most are naturally physically active and love to be on the go. What’s not always obvious though is that encouraging your child to be active on a regular basis can benefit their health for their whole life. You’re never too young to learn to love exercise and active children are more likely to grow into active adults. Regular exercise will help your child develop strong muscles and bones, help them sleep and make them more alert. The NHS recommend that children between 5 & 18 have at least 1 hour of exercise per day, though even gentle exercise such as walking to school counts towards this. As children grow it can be a challenge to give them enough daily activity and some older children

can be reluctant to remain active. It’s important to find activities they enjoy, as having fun is the best motivation of all. Over the next few pages, you’ll find details of some of the many, fantastic local clubs and organisations offering a wide range of fun ways to stay active and keep fit. Whichever activity suits you and your family, we hope you have a fantastic time getting active!

Scholarship Workshop, 12th September

We are not necessarily looking for someone who can already sing, dance and act to a high standard. Perhaps your child is a great singer, but needs some help with the dancing? Or maybe they can glide across the stage but lack the confidence to speak on their own or in front of people? Maybe they can do a bit of all 3 (sing, dance, act) but just need a bit more guidance? This could be for them. We want to recognise their existing achievements and develop them into all-round performers, able to work independently and in a team. Theatre Sense School for Performing Arts - Quality Tuition from a school that cares. Swimming Lessons are available at the Sovereign Centre 50 weeks of the year, for children and adults from six months plus. Lessons cater for all levels and abilities, from complete beginners through to more experienced swimmers who are looking to improve their stroke, technique and stamina. Swimming teachers are qualified to ASA level 2 and certificates and badges are awarded to pupils at the end of every level to celebrate their progress. The unique swimming lesson programme at the Sovereign Centre encourages children to enjoy the benefits of swimming, and ensures children have confidence in the water and are given the essential water safety skills for living by the sea. The Sovereign Centre are taking bookings for the September term which runs from the 31st August to the 20th December 2015. Lessons can be paid for by the course or children and adults can enjoy the extra benefits of becoming a swimming lessons member, including free parking and unlimited swimming outside of lessons! ts a e r t y k o o Ideas for sp kids e h t h t i w to make If you're planning a Halloween party, or just want to have some fun in the kitchen with the kids, here are a few ideas for knocking up some spooky sweeties this year COOKIE MONSTERS We whipped up some double cream, separated it into 3 different bowls and added different food colouring to each. Put a dollop of cream between two small cookies and use chocolate drops to make the teeth. For the eyes we used mini marshmallows, using black writing-icing for the pupils.

DOUGHNUT DRACULAS For this one we just took an ordinary, plain ring doughnut and made it creepier. Using black writingicing, we drew on some beady eyes and a vampirestyle hairline. We used a couple of candy sticks for fangs and dabbed some red writing-icing on them for a bloodstained look.

SPIDER BICCIES We took some Oreos (Other sandwich-type biscuits are available) and used some liquorice bootlaces (cut short) to give them 8, spidery legs. We used mini marshmallows and black writing-icing to make the eyeballs.

Are you part of a school nursery or group? Grab your antlers and hold your very own Reindeer Run this December for Chestnut Tree, the children’s hospice for Sussex! Chestnut Tree is calling on the wonderful schools, nurseries and groups of Sussex to organise their very own Reindeer Runs this December to raise vital funds and awareness for their local children’s hospice. Every child who takes part will receive a set of reindeer antlers and a flashing red nose. You will also receive one free adult Santa suit, complete with beard, per group! Then you set yourselves a Reindeer Run challenge, and raise as much sponsorship as you can. Why not include this fun activity as part of a PE lesson, over a lunch break, or as part of your Christmas party? Chestnut Tree is the children’s hospice for Sussex, caring for life-limited children both at the House and in families’ own homes. It currently costs over £3.5 million per year to provide all of their care services yet they receive less than 7% of their funding from central government. Meaning they rely heavily on the generosity of the local community. To find out how you can join in, contact the Community Fundraising Team on 01903 871820 or fundraising@ chestnut-tree-house.org.uk

SOAP STAR JESSIE WALLACE STARS IN CINDERELLA THIS CHRISTMAS Cinderella shall go to the ball this Christmas with the help of soap star Jessie Wallace who makes her pantomime debut as the Fairy Godmother in Sussex’s most spectacular family pantomime. For the past 15 years Jessie has become a national treasure thanks to her performance as Kat Slater in the popular BBC soap EastEnders, winning numerous awards and legions of fans. Jessie’s other television credits include ITV’s The Bill and Wild at Heart and her critically acclaimed leading role in Miss Marie Lloyd - Queen of the Music Hall for BBC Four. In 2008 she also took part in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Earlier this month BBC One announced that Jessie will feature alongside EastEnders co-star Shane Richie in their own six part spin-off drama, which will be aired in 2016. No stranger to the stage, Jessie has appeared in the West End productions of Rent and Haunted as well as the 25th anniversary production of Stepping Out in the role of Sylvia. Most recently Jessie returned to the stage playing Lil in the Theatre Royal Stratford East’s musical production of Fings Ain’t Wot they Used T’be directed by Terry Johnson.

20

Executive producer of Cinderella, Daryl Back, said “We are delighted Jessie will be joining the cast of our spectacular pantomime Cinderella in Hastings. Jessie is such a popular face on television we’re thrilled she’ll be joining us in pantoland and giving audiences at the White Rock her take on The Fairy Godmother.” The White Rock Theatre’s General Manager, Lorna Hollister, added “Each year we’ve seen the White Rock’s pantomime become more and more successful. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Jessie Wallace to the Theatre, and know that she will be very popular with the Hastings audience.” Cinderella is produced by One From The Heart, in association with HQ Theatres, the partnership behind recent pantomime successes including last year’s production of Aladdin starring Louie Spence. Cinderella at Hastings White Rock Theatre runs from Friday 11 to Sunday 27 December 2015. For tickets and information visit whiterocktheatre. org.uk or call 01424 462288.

Share the magic of Christmas with an NSPCC Letter from Santa Christmas is a time filled with family traditions – anything from putting carrots out for Rudolph to leaving ‘snowy footprints’ around the house – to preserve children’s belief in Santa Claus. However, even the most creative parents can be caught out! To help share the magic of Christmas with children here in the UK and around the world, the NSPCC has once again teamed up with Santa to send personalised letters all the way from Lapland in return for a suggested donation of £5. And this year, Santa has been hard at work, finding new ways to make each letter even more special. A brand new, colourful illustration style and characters and stories tailored to specific age groups are complemented by more personalisation in the letters, further enhancing the magic of receiving a letter from the man himself. Parents can choose whether the letter is signed by Santa or Father Christmas, and each letter now comes complete with an age appropriate game for children to play. For the first time, those requesting a Letter from Santa will be able to write a personal P.S. message, and will receive a complimentary pack including games, recipes and activities to help make the experience even more enchanting. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Yasmin from Glasgow requested a Letter from Santa in 2014 and said: “My seven year old thought it was fantastic. He couldn't get over the fact that Santa knew so much about him, and kept saying ‘How does he know this? Look, he knows I sing!’" By making a donation to the NSPCC, parents will be able to share the magic of Christmas with their loved ones, whilst helping the charity keep more children safe. Request your Letter from Santa from 1 October – 22 December at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa for a suggested donation of £5 to the NSPCC.
