No matter how small or big your wrist is, silver or gold, or a bit of both, we’ll make you something special and lasting.

Keepsake Jewelry from the artist of the original St Simons Island Signature Bracelet and Jekyll Island Turtle Bracelet.

T

he opportunity to spend two days backstage at the Zang Toi Fashion Show on Sea Island March 12 and 13 put us in a beautiful frame of mind; thus was born the beautiful theme for our May/June issue. I’ve always admired the artistry of a Richard Avedon photograph titled “Dovima with the Elephants.” The model Dovima, one of the world’s first recognized “supermodels,” posed for the photo at the Cirque d’hiver, Paris, in August 1955, wearing the first evening gown designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint-Laurent. Ironically, Dovima left modeling in 1962 “before the camera turned cruel,” and lived our her days in Florida working as a hostess in a pizza parlor. The circus was in town about the time we were planning our own shoot, but we decided to sub

the gothic bones of salt-cured trees on Jekyll Island’s Driftwood Beach for the elephants of the original. As fate would have it, a wicked nor’easter was kicking the froth off the waves and gave our lovely model Alanna Smith an unintended blow out. It also whipped the chiffon skirt of her evening gown from Essentials into a froth, giving the photo an added touch of drama. Sheila Martin and Elle Smith of The Tabby House Spa styled our model, while Brooke Roberts was our Avedon, a master of the lens who is willing and able to capture the beauty of any situation we throw her way. In this case, she waded through the chlly Atlantic surf and picked her way over rough rocks to get just the right shot. We are grateful to them all for their work on our behalf.

Is there any prettier place to call home than the Golden Isles? (That was a rhetorical question. I know there’s not.) Our May/June issue is the hardest one of the year because spring usually springs right in the middle of our production schedule and we just can’t keep our minds on our work! Beauty greets us at every turn, from azaleas to wisteria to more hours of sunshine, there’s just so much to be thankful for. With this, our Beautiful Coast issue, we pay homage to all that makes our home special. Rivers and beaches, generous hearts and smiling faces, good food and ice cream – what’s not to love? Even the traffic is more bearable if you roll the windows down and crank the radio, am I right? Which reminds me, the other day I was turning onto Frederica Road at 5:30 p.m., headed home, windows down and searching for an oldie but a goodie on the CD player. Someone I passed had already beat me to the punch: I heard Good Times by the group Chic blaring out of their windows. A kindred soul, whoever they were. Speaking of kindred souls, there’s a little story tucked into our Coastal Q about an 85-year-old woman, a 15-year-old boy and a 5-year-old dog. Wondering what’s the common thread there? Gosh, where to begin. The dog and the boy are helping to ease the woman’s final days with regular visits to her at Hospice of the Golden Isles. I have to confess, I suspected her of hyperbole when she first spoke of her emotional connection to the dog, but when the dog entered her room and made a beeline for her, sitting at her feet and licking her face in greeting, I saw the light. When he turned to me for a polite nudge and then settled in on her bed for a quiet rest, I was in love. What an amazing gift life is, and the opportunity to live it with people who love you and make you smile. I am sorry to say I could not adequately capture the wonderment of the morning I spent with Sue Brase, Chris Carswell and Bronx at hospice, but I hope you’ll read between the lines and know that friendship is the most beautiful of life’s gifts. Happy Spring and, shortly, Summer, to you. Revel in the beauty in our pages but, more importantly, get out and enjoy the Golden Isles. Make every day count!

An informative line-up of things to know about the Golden Isles

I l l u s t r a ti o n B y L a n e Ng o

The Doctors’ Daughter Puts the Golden Isles on the Map Add Erin Goodman’s name to the growing list of homegrown movers and shakers in the fashion world, as this 23-year-old whiz kid is poised to make a splash with her own line of American-made leather bags and accessories. The daughter of Drs. Neil and Margaret Goodman of St. Simons Island, Erin has carried her affinity for the coastal lifestyle all the way to New York City, where she designs for Ecru, a women’s clothing line found locally at Mari Max on St. Simons Island. Her line of leather goods will be marketed under the name “Gunner’s Daughter,” a “cheeky reference” by Erin’s own admission that also lends the line a fresh young edginess no other accessory line can boast. “I first learned the term when I was reading a naval glossary. I was actually looking for words about boats that inspired me, and I came across Gunner’s Daughter,” Erin explains. “The saying is ‘Kissing the Gunner’s Daughter.’

This was commonly used board British naval ships and it is a punishment similar to walking the plank, but instead you are ‘made to kiss the gunner’s daughter,’ which is the cannon. It sounds really cool despite its true context. I figured I could just change the context and make it sound cool by using it as my brand name. I like that it has historical context, that it’s a little cheeky, and is relevant to maritime terminology.” Aside from the obvious appeal of being made in the USA – and that means everything from the leather to the thread used in the stitching to the production facilities making the bags – the line also offers a really cool personal touch; the fabric linings of the bags will be printed with maritime maps of American coastlines, including Erin’s own Coastal Georgia home. Erin’s bags could easily become collector’s items among women seeking one for every coast.

“I grew up on an St. Simons Island, a city with beautiful Southern charm and a tropical, resort lifestyle. Now that I have moved to Brooklyn, I appreciate that lifestyle a bit more,” Erin says. “During the summer here in New York City, everyone flocks to the Hamptons, Montauk, Rockaways, the Jersey shore, to get their dosage of sun and weekend fun. It’s literally part of summer in the city. It is definitely not the same as living on an island in Southeast Georgia, but seeing the flux of people that seek out the water and beach almost every weekend made me feel like there was a way to bring my longing for island life to the city culture/lifestyle.”

While the Golden Isles will always be home, Erin says she’s taken to the New York City lifestyle like, well, a duck to water.

Erin says she always preferred creative activities as a child – tye-dying, drawing, painting, beading, making friendship bracelets with embroidery thread – but it wasn’t until she took a class with Laura Edenfield at Frederica Academy that she discovered her affinity for art.

“New York is just the center of it all. Brooklyn, its unique sister borough, is a creative mecca for all kinds of people alike. It is a stereotype culture. If you live in Brooklyn, it is an unspoken way of saying you are New Yorker enough to know that Brooklyn is not just hip-hop and projects anymore. It is now the land of hipsters, flea markets, brownstones, and designer real estate developments. It is the new place to be living and thriving. I also love that it is on the East Coast and it is easy to fly home to St. Simons when I need some sun in the winter or just a little inspiration for my bags. “

“She had us actually doing art projects that involved drawing still-life objects, considering composition, and color theory. At the time I was also taking her art history class which I absolutely loved and became inspired to learn history through paintings (which I believe is a much more effective way to learn about history in general),” Erin says. “I worked my first summer job at TIBI on the Island and learned about the business of fashion for the first time. In my spare time, I was buying and deconstructing vintage clothing and then reconstructing it. All of these interests of mine were happening around the same time and then I visited the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah. As soon as I walked through the door of that campus, I knew that I would have a career in design and it would start at college.”

16

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

“Ever since I decided I wanted a career in fashion, I knew that NYC would be the city I would need to be in. There is literally everything at one’s fingertips here, for so many industries besides design and fashion,” she says. “The food is diverse and inventive, all of the happenings here are nothing short of inspiring, and the blend of different people and cultures is really something you don’t see unless you live in a large city or maybe Europe.

Erin’s Gunner’s Daughter line is still in early production. Brunswick’s Last Stand: Saving the Dart House Storms are nothing new at 4 Glynn Avenue. Built circa 1877, the cheery yellow Folk Victorian stood through the epic hurricane that struck Georgia in 1898, a storm that pushed seawater over the windowsills and left an indelible watermark on the walls. The house witnessed the effect of two world wars on Brunswick and the advent of indoor plumbing, the urbanization of Brunswick and the construction of a major highway mere steps from the front door. After 137 years on this earth, there’s little left that one would not have faced and overcome, except perhaps obsolescence. And therein lies the crux of the battle over #4 that rages today. It’s a battle between history and progress. William H. “Bill” Brown, 95, his younger brother Robert Dart “Bob” Brown, 93, and their younger sister Sara B. Ratcliffe, 89, grew up at 4 Glynn Avenue,

18

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

a house built by their grandfather, William Robert Dart, using heart pine milled at the sawmill he oversaw at Gascoigne Bluff on St. Simons Island. The Brown siblings grew up listening to their mother’s stories of the great 1898 hurricane that covered the keys of the piano with water and filled the basement with mud. The land the house was built on was part of a large grant in “The Village of Brunswick” made to Urbanus Dart and William R. Davis by the Georgia General Assembly in 1826. The two oversaw the construction of a courthouse, a jail and about 30 houses and stores. They later constructed a canal linking the Port of Brunswick with the Altamaha River, thus opening up transportation ways for interior plantations to export their crops. Urbanus, for whom the Urbana neighborhood surrounding #4 is named, also served Brunswick as mayor and as a member of the Georgia legislature.

GoT DRiPS, CloGS oR leakS? Trust Cumberland Plumbing to get you fixed up! Handling all your residential & commercial plumbing needs in Glynn County.

He donated land in Brunswick for the construction of First United Methodist and St. Mark’s Episcopal churchs on Norwich Street, for First Presbyterian Church on Union Street and for First African Baptist Church on Amherst Street. Black congregants of that church would pass the house on Sundays bound for their baptismal in Dart Creek that flowed past Lanier Oak in the front yard. It was beneath the old oak’s sheltering arms, local lore holds, that a visiting English poet by the name of Sidney Lanier was inspired to pen the defining verse of the Golden Isles, The Marshes of Glynn.

Reliable Service • Reasonable Rates

At one time a vast pastoral homestead, the house was surrounded by 27 pecan trees and its yard was shared by a cow and a horse. Up until 1923 and the introduction of city sewer services, an outhouse on Macon Avenue served the family. “The house remainded in the family until 1985 when our mother died,” says Bill Brown. In the family for more than a century, the house was important to the siblings even though they could not keep it. They sold it to the BrunswickGolden Isles Chamber of Commerce for use as its headquarters, a use the family felt fit such an iconic and prominent landmark. “We sold it to the chamber because we knew ... it would be cared for,” says Bob Brown. Now that the chamber has moved from the building and is seeking to either demolish or sell the house for relocation elsewhere, the Dart heirs and descendants are organizing a major campaign to save the house and keep it where it is. The Historic Brunswick Foundation has nominated 4 Glynn Avenue – which lies outside of Brunswick’s historic district – for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Georgia Department of Natural Resources Encourages Rainwater Harvesting With average rain fall amounts near 50 inches per year, Coastal Georgia has a huge potential for harvesting rainwater, which would take some pressure off the drinking water supply. Recently, staff of the Georgia Coastal Management Program at theCoastal Resources Division has been working on projects that harvest and re-use rainwater.

What is rainwater harvesting? Simply put, a rainwater harvesting system collects water from a roof piped to a storage tank where it can be used for a variety of purposes. Designs range from a single rain barrel at the bottom of a downspout

for watering a garden to large cistern systems that can provide thousands of gallons of storage capacity. Based on average annual rainfall amounts in coastal Georgia, more than 30,000 gallons of water can be captured annually from a small 1,000 square foot roof area.

Flooring, Cabinets, Countertops, and much more!

Rainwater harvesting and water conservation are good examples of Green Growth. “Green growth can be defined in many ways,” says Coastal Resources Specialist Kelly Hill, “but the overall goal is to responsibly support the future economic growth of coastal Georgia in a sustainable way without compromising the health of our coastal ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.”

Come check out our NEW Cabinet Design Center at our St. Simons’ Store!

The Georgia Coastal Management Program has partnered with the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve Coastal Training Program and Coca-Cola to provide Make-Your-Own Rain Barrel Workshops for residents in Coastal Georgia. Participants get the chance to construct their own rain barrel to take home with them that day. Upcoming workshops are posted online at http://coastalgadnr.org/cm/green. You can also see an example of a rain water collection project at the DNR’s Coastal Regional Headquarters in Brunswick, where native vegetation landscaping is irrigated with rain water collected and stored in rain barrels. A bioswale captures and infiltrates stormwater that was flooding the adjacent parking lot.

Not on the island? Don’t fret. We have a Design Center at our Brunswick Store too!

In July 2013, a large-scale rain water harvesting project with 6,000 gallon storage was installed to be a water source for boat and trailer wash down, outboard engine flushing and general use. Based on local rainfall data since installation, more than 65,000 gallons of water has been intercepted from the rooftop of the adjacent building. The collected water is pressurized and treated with filtration and UV sterilization before being pumped to two outdoor water faucets. The Georgia Coastal Management Program offers technical assistance to local governments, property owners, developers, and the public on a diversity of coastal issues including Green Growth. If you would like more information on the rainwater harvesting projects or would like to discuss Green Growth opportunities in your community contact Kelly Hill at 912.264.7218. – Submitted by the Coastal Resources Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources

High resolution digital photography, for example, can give us a peek at things we might not otherwise see. A bird’s eye view of the sand-sharing system off East Beach, for example, gives all us non-scientific folk a visual for understanding terms like littoral zones and longshore drift. Evidently scientists need pictures from time-totime, too. The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia DNR recently acquired highly accurate, high resolution images – called orthoimagery data – for use by natural resource managers, land use planners, foresters, and researchers. The DNR uses this imagery for a variety of purposes including habitat mapping, land use analysis and permitting. The imagery project began in late 2011. The aerial orthoimagery was acquired during January 2013 at low tide by PhotoScience and delivered to DNR and the multiple partners: county governments of Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, Bryan, McIntosh, Glynn, University of Georgia, Coastal Regional Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Participation by such numerous partners lowered the individual cost contributions, assisted in gaining project support, and ensured thorough regional coverage. The imagery is now available for download through the NOAA Coastal Services Center Digital Coast website, http://www.csc.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/. Visit and browse the gallery when you have a chance. It’s fun viewing. Equally fun viewing – though perhaps not when your toes are in the water – is ocearch.org, the global shark tracker. As in great white sharks. And yes, we do have them here. Quite frequently. Ocearch is a non-profit research organization that tags great white sharks and provides the information it learns in real-time to the scientific community and the public through its website.

An infrared photograph of the sand sharing system on east beach

Ocearch has made it possible to meet and know the whereabouts of sharks like Katharine, a 14-footer weighing 2,300 pounds who was tracked to the waters off Sea Island on April 11. Tagged off Cape Cod in August 2013, she’s traveled nearly 3,000 miles since her tracker was fitted.

The site has proven popular with shark spotters, and it’s a fun way to know what’s really happening out there in the deep. Just remember to use the information wisely; don’t harass the sharks. – AHC

Islands of Invention Think of the various tools and conveniences you have at your disposal in any given day, and then imagine life without them. Could you work where you work if you didn’t have a car to get you there? Could you do your work once you’ve arrived at the office without electricity to turn on the lights and start up your computer? Even the pens and papers we relied so heavily upon pre-computers were someone’s bright idea long, long ago. Inventors solve problems and make life easier, and they can be found everywhere, in every walk of life and in every community, including our own. Jimmy Vanboxel and Hank Ash and business partner Silvia Paxton are three we’ve found here in the Golden Isles who are generating new ideas and products to make our lives better.

Vanity Squares Jimmy Vanboxel got his start in his mother’s hair salon in Michigan. After a brief stint in Atlanta, he found his home in the Golden Isles. With almost 15 years in the hair business and an arsenal of national and international awards for his hair-styling talent, he opened Uberzoot Hair Co. on St. Simons Island and was met with a steady stream of loyal clients. In five years his company has grown from a one-stylist salon to a full team of creative hair experts.

26

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

The clients-turned-friends kept coming back and bringing their friends. “We’ve consistently met capacity with the addition of each new stylist,” Jimmy says. Though committed to excellence and consistency for his clients, his focus is shifting. “We’d like to explore what products or services we can develop that will help us do what we do better,” he says. “We like to think of our salon space as more of a creative think-tank for new ideas and products. We toss around ideas all the time. Vanity Squares is simply one of those thoughts that made it to production.” Vanity Squares were born of the simple realization that hair clips are inconvenient. Stylists use them to section off hair when cutting, styling or coloring. Regular clips can snag, crimp, crease and break hair, so Jimmy began experimenting with other materials on the job. “I bought a piece of Velcro to use in place of hair clips and clients would say, ‘That’s so neat!’ or ‘Where’d you get such a tool?’” The online search began for a Velcro hair accessory. “I had this idea in my mind, but I never found what I envisioned, so I began to contact manufacturing companies and here we are.” Similar to Velcro, but with a far gentler grip, Vanity Squares pull away easily without damaging hair. Realizing the product’s potential, Jimmy secured a manufacturer, purchased a domain, built a website, explored shipping options, and developed an overall marketing plan. He has learned from both past successes and a few failures as well. “I am an idea person, so I’ve had to construct myself a framework to filter all the ideas through.” When considering an invention, Jimmy asks himself: Is it usable, affordable, and reasonably accessible? “These questions help me, so I don’t pull the trigger on every idea I think of,” he says.

Vanity Squares, sold under the tagline “Smarter Styling,” is trademarked and Jimmy is hopeful for its success. For more information visit www.vanitysquares.com

Qputt Hank Ash just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Hank is a retired entrepreneur who owns and operates a group of radio stations. He’s also an avid golfer. While volunteering at the first McGladrey Classic Golf Tournament in 2010, he met Silvia Paxton. Realizing they attended the same church and were both golf fans, the two sat and discussed golfers and their game. “She told me about an idea she had to create a product to help golfers keep their heads still during their golf swing. I delved into it, talked to others about it, and realized it was really something worth developing,” Hank says. Hank introduced Silvia to Mike Shannon, the world renowned golf instructor and putting coach at Sea Island. “Mike liked the idea and thought it could be a useful teaching tool for putting, so the team agreed that it’d be easier to develop a product to strengthen the basic put, rather than the full swing.” These conversations three and a half years ago would become the backbone for Qputt’s development. Hank constructed a prototype using PVC pipe and a plastic ball. “Mike tried them out with his students to help us develop the sensitivity we needed,” he says. Hank and Sylvia engaged an engineer to work on the spe-

cific movements of the balls, then decided on a manufacturer in Philadelphia already engaged in producing golf-related products. “It’s a very simple product, really,” Hank says. “Nothing complex about it. That’s probably a strength.” The tagline, “A level for your head,” is a near perfect descriptor. Qputt consists of two small steel balls which “click” when centered, so the golfer recognizes the ideal head position both by the centered weight of the balls and the audible signal – a two-fold sensory experience. The size, weight, and simplicity of the device makes it easy to store and carry. “Best of all”, Hank adds, “it’s beneficial to golfers of all skill levels.” Hank and Silvia – who calls herself “the quiet partner” – have since patented Qputt and are excited about bringing this useful golf tool to the world. “We just introduced the product in January, and it’s currently being sold directly online, on Ebay and Amazon, with plans to have it sold in big box sporting goods stores soon.” With their marketing plan in place, the success of their invention seems almost guaranteed. “The intent is to have the golf professionals use it with their students and stock it in their golf shops, with the goal of getting it in front of as many people possible through various selling platforms.” “One huge benefit is that Mike is one of the top 50 golf instructors in the world - he’s been a key component to our success,” Hank says. Chris Carswell, Sue brase and bronx

Therapy Dog Unites Kindred Souls G-O-D | D-O-G Coincidence? It could have been only God who gave Bronx, a long-haired German shepherd from a genuinely German line, his sixth sense for finding and fixing human need. Bronx is a therapy dog, trained to alert on his 15-year-old owner, Chris Carswell, when a seizure is imminent. The dog will whine and push him toward a place to sit before the seizure hits. Learned behavior, you say? Of course. But nobody had to teach Bronx where to find Sue Brase on his first visit to Hospice of the Golden Isles, a weekly sideline for Chris and Bronx to share their love with others in need. Woman and dog had never met before, but Bronx sought Sue’s room on his very first tour of hospice. “Bronx picked her,” says Chris’s mother, Janet Carswell. “We always come here first and we always come here last.” Sue is a widow who retired to St. Simons Island by way of Missouri in 1986. She moved into residence at hospice 11 months ago. Bronx is a doppelganger of Sue’s own beloved Nikki, an eclectic mix of chow, bassett and doberman who most favored the one breed that didn’t contribute to her genetic mix – German sherpherd. Nikki died at the age of five, the age that Bronx is now. The two dogs could have come from the same litter, judging

30

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

by separate photos of the two on a credenza in Sue’s room. Regardless of the resemblence to her own beloved Nikki, Sue says Bronx is his own man. “One falls intensely in love with him,” she says. “He’s an old soul.” Much like Chris himself. Chris died one day in the third grade, and his life has not been the same since. Fighting poor health since the womb, Chris’s nadir apppeared to come in October of 2007, when he went into respiratory/cardiac arrest at school. At some point, he suffered a stroke that robbed him of the right half of his vision field. The area of his brain where the stroke occurred is thought to be the same one causing his seizures, but beyond that, his doctors are at a loss to put a name to Chris’s collection of health challenges, which include a connective tissue disease. They’ve even sent his blood for genetic evaluation outside the country. Homeschooled by his mother, Chris is also a one-man charity – 1 Boy 4 Change – which focuses upon the needs of law enforcement officers. A favorite project is providing K-9 handlers with heat alarms to protect K-9 officers from suffering heat stroke or death in overheated and unattended patrol cars. If the alarm’s visual and auditory warnings fail to summon help as the cabin temperature rises past a certain point, the alarm will lower the car’s windows and activate the fan to cool the interior.

This boy is not defined by what he lacks. For example, the deficiency in his vision makes him an expert marksman. Given the opportunity to partake of sniper training with a regional police force that has “adopted” Chris into its ranks, Chris excelled due to the narrow focus of his vision field. “You have to find the positive,” he says of life. Beyond their mutual love of Bronx and his for them, Sue and Chris have riflery in common, although Sue can no longer shoot due to vision impairment of her own, and music. Despite the difference in their ages, they’ve so much in common almost wonders if Bronx didn’t have a sixth sense about their compatibility, as well. D-O-G | G-O-D Coincidence? We think not. – A.H.C.

Coastal Symphony of Georgia Salutes Wounded Warriors When Luis Haza was growing up in Cuba, he learned first-hand about the terrible hammer of tyranny. His father, a human rights activist and poet, was executed by Fidel Castro without trial for supporting democracy in Cuba. Luis was 9 years old. “I have lived under both tyranny and democracy,” says Luis, music director and conductor of The Coastal Symphony of Georgia. “I know the difference.” Luis immigrated to the United States with his mother in 1964 at age 14 and began what would become a distinguished career on the worldwide stage as a conductor, violinist and educator. He is deeply grateful for the opportunities and freedoms afforded him as an American. On Monday, May 19th, Luis will conduct the symphony orchestra in what he calls “an artistic expression of gratitude” to the men and women of the U.S. Military who fight to preserve those freedoms. “So many have given their lives or come home wounded in order that we might live in the land of the free,” he notes. “I wanted to find a way to say thank you and contribute to the support of our local wounded warriors.” For Georgia Army National Guard Lt. Col. Buck Bennett, who fought with the 48th Brigade in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, the evening will carry special significance. “One percent of our population is defending the other 99 percent,” Buck says. “People need to remember there is a war going on, and

34

that results in an enormous need of support for our wounded warriors and their families.” Buck, his wife Joni and about two dozen volunteers working through American Legion Post 9 in Brunswick, are helping provide that support primarily to the Warrior’s Transition Battalions (WTB) at Fort Stewart in Savannah and Fort Gordon in Augusta. They organize events including an annual Warrior’s Weekend on Jekyll Island for soldiers and their families, a Christmas Party and Toy Shop, and Hearts for Heroes, a Valentine Party where more than 30,000 homemade cards have been distributed during the past four years. Acting on referrals from the WTB Chaplain they respond to needs for one-on-one support, hospice care, and a myriad of other hands-on needs. “It’s not about us,” says Buck, who explains that 100 percent of the donations to their effort go directly to the support of wounded warriors. “It’s all about them, and because we are all volunteers, there is no middle man. We are there for the families, and where that support is not available, we become the family.” Concertgoers will have an opportunity to donate to the work being done by the Bennetts and their team as well as enjoy an evening of stirring music in-

All of this provides a teaching moment for Nathaniel Roper, director of choral and orchestral activities at Glynn Academy, who will conduct a combined chorus of adults and members of his Glynn Academy Concert Choir in the choral works included in the program. “It is an opportunity to remind them of the great history of our country,” says Nathaniel, “particularly what the heroes of the past and their families have sacrificed to give us the freedoms we often take for granted today.” Luis hopes that message will not be lost on concertgoers as they enjoy selections from Beethoven, Verdi and Tchaikovsky, including the familiar 1812 Overture, and the powerful American anthem, Battle Hymn of the Republic. “We are indebted to our valiant military men and women for our freedoms, and they deserve our support and dedication to their welfare.” – Susan Garrett

KBGIB Wants to Help You Recycle Wondering what to do with old electronics, clothes, batteries, prescription drugs and scrap metal? Box them up and head to the annual Electronics Recycling and Paper Shred event from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. May 17 at the Glynn Place Mall. Organized by Keep Brunswick-Golden Isles Beautiful, this year’s event has expanded to include much more than electronics recycling and on-site paper shredding services. Textile, battery and scrap metal recycling services and a prescription drug drop-off will be available. The only charge associated with the event is a $20 per unit fee for TVs. Console and projection sets are not accepted. “The 2014 event will accept a wide variety of items including all types and condition of textiles, batteries and even large appliances such as washers and dryers. The pill drop-off will be manned by the Glynn/Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team and allows for the safe disposal of unused or expired pills and prescription drugs, including pet medications,” says executive director Lea King-Badyna. “It is particularly important to avoid flushing or throwing away old medicines – studies have found prescription drugs in drinking water and waterways, and proper disposal not only helps the environment but also helps prevent accidental poisoning of children and pets.”

The Nature

Connection

Pack It In and Pack It Out B Y Ly d i a T h o m p s o n

It seems there are always plastic soda bottles floating around in my van. I pick up one bottle, and another one rolls out from under the seat. Thank heavens my recycling bin is parked right next to the van. I toss the bottle in the bin, and it’s out of sight and out of mind. I don’t have to think about it again. Or do I? School will be out soon. It’s almost summer. We’re heading out to the beach, where we connect with the ocean. Have you ever thought about the water in the ocean, where it’s been and where it’s going? Last year, I wrote about the Sargasso Sea. This is a sea that touches no land. It is surrounded by currents like the Gulf Stream and the Canary Current. It is where Sargassum seaweed floats in dense mats. Baby sea turtles make their home in Sargassum Grass, which shelters them as they grow. Because the currents in this water move slowly, however, other things gather out there as well. In fact, the Sargasso Sea is a trap for man-made debris. Right there in that sea is the North Atlantic Garbage Patch. Yes, it is a sad fact that our bad nature connection to the oceans is our garbage. The plastic garbage is the most frightening because it does not just go away. It breaks down into tiny pieces and floats on our oceans. Fish swallow it. Birds eat it. Plastic is not a natural thing, so just how does it get way out there in the middle of the Atlantic? When I was on the road full time, I was always alarmed at the amount of plastic I saw littering the land. Everywhere I looked – on the roads, in the trees and on our beaches – I saw bits and pieces of plastic. Eventually, much of it ends up in our streams and rivers. It bounces along in the sometimes rough currents of mountain streams, wending its way through the Piedmont’s waterways, which finally lead to the coast. From there it’s on to the Atlantic where it eventaully reaches the deep cold waters of the Sargasso Sea, where it remains forever. For a few years, I refused to buy anything plastic. Do you know how hard it is to find stuff that is not wrapped or otherwise contained by plastic? Now we can be all negative about this problem or we can be

46

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

part of the solution. I believe in recycling but not just in putting it into a recycling bin somewhere. I believe in buying things with a recycling label that indicates not only that it is recyclable but that it was made from recycling. As more people seek recycled products, the markets will step up to meet the demand. Take a little time to look at the containers you are buying. Buy recycled. And when you go to the beach bring along your own recycle bin. Remember the slogan, “Pack it in and Pack it out.” Hey, I bet you can get a tote made of recycled plastic as your own beach recycling bin! Recycling is an excellent way to help keep our beaches clean and be a part of the positive Nature Connection. The

Dish

A New Twist on an Old Dish B y D a n i e l V e a l | P h o t o b y a m y c a r t e r

The Demere Chicken has been a great dish on our menu for years. It consists of a six-ounce chicken breast, breaded, and then sauteed. We then top it with a mushroom cream sauce. There was no way we could go wrong with that one. But like everything, great dishes must evolve. So chef Jamie Caden and I sat down and discussed different ways to take our Demere Chicken to a new level. We decided to try an eight-ounce double lobed chicken breast sauted and stuffed with goat cheese, caramelized onions and mushrooms. We then took our roasted red pepper couli and mixed a little heavy cream with it to make the sauce. Our servers tried it and loved it so our next step was to test it out on our diners as a menu special. We made 10 orders for a Friday night in December. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that not only did we sell out on a slow Friday in the off-season, but everyone who had the dish thouroghly enjoyed it and some even told us that we needed to add it to our menu. So in February when we revamped our menu the new Demere Chicken was added and was a hit with all of our guests who tried it. Other changes to our menu include our award winning tomato crab bisque. That dish won first place in the appetizer division at A Taste of Glynn in 2013. We also changed our crab cake recipe. We decided to go a little more toward the Maryland-style and I must say it too has been received well. Lastly, we added a fried green tomato salad in place of our Southern salad. It comes with mixed field greens, fried green tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, goat cheese, and – for an extra charge – you can add grilled chicken or shrimp. We then dress the salad with our roasted red pepper couilis and a balsamic reduction. The menu looks different, but our favorites are still the same. And, if you like the old Demere Chicken we can still make it for you, but we hope you’ll give the new one a try first. Come in and enjoy some Low Country, Cajun or coastal cusine with us. G Daniel Veal bought Blackwater Grill from founders John and Rhonda Howton in 2012. His history with the business started long before that, however, as an employee and manager of the business.

To make the goat cheese mixture: Caramelize the onions in white wine, cooking them for about 10 minutes. Then add mushrooms and garlic and cook for another three minutes. In a mixing bowl combine all of the ingredients and mix. Set aside. To make the roasted red pepper cream sauce: Chop the roasted red pepper and sauté in olive oil with the remaining ingredients except the heavy cream. Once cooked, put the mixture into a blender with the heavy cream and purée to a nice smooth consistency. Set aside. To cook the chicken: Put a tablespoon of olive oil in the sauté pan over medium high heat. Season the chicken breast with salt and pepper and lay it face down in the hot pan to get a good sear on both sides. Take a big tablespoon of the goat cheese mixture and spoon it down the middle of one side of the chicken breast. Fold the other side on top. Place the chicken in a 350-degree oven for 5 to 6 minutes. Once done remove the chicken and top it with the roasted red pepper cream.

Tales from Camp W o r d s a n d p i c t u r e s B Y A m a n d a K i r kl a n d

I’m sitting in front of my laptop with a bowl of Chex mix and a bottle of water on the bed next to me. A few of the kids come in complaining that they can’t get any further with the geocaching unless they find out the name of the state bird of Florida. A crew of smaller kids are playing four-square in the street and I’m writing this only semi-anxious that someone might steal my spot in the laundry line over at the washing station. Yep, we’re camping. We have a short tradition of camping at the Suwannee River. It started a few years back when my oldest boy was invited to go with some family friends. He went the first year and came back with so many great stories that when the friends invited him the next year, we decided to horn in on the trip. Luckily, the friends are super laid back and didn’t mind adding about seven or 10 extra people into the mix. I’m a gal who doesn’t do primitive camping – pitching a tent and hoping for the best – very well. There are bath houses all over the place so it’s not the call of nature that’s an issue, it’s more nature itself. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see nature and to live in harmony with nature but possibly having tiny rodents or even large animals try to invade my personal space is just more than I can bear. That’s why we have a 34-foot Coachman Catalina that sleeps 10. This way, I can step outside and take a hike or head over to the canoe outpost and take a leisurely run down the river but come right back to the air conditioner whenever necessary. Although we sleep in style, we love to cook on the campfire. We usually bring meat from home, obviously, but everything else we need we pick up here at the local store. Last night’s dinner was chicken pot pie in a Dutch oven and the Colonials would have been proud. After dinner it’s on to s’mores roasted over the fire. It’s what’s for dessert at camp every night. It’s gotten quiet which means the pick-up game of four-square is over. There is still one kid sitting at the table in the camper making rubber band bracelets and the bikes are gone. Someone must have found out what the state bird is and continued the geocaching. I can’t see the washing station from here, but I feel sure that I lost my spot. Here’s my favorite thing about camping, though; when the clothes get dirty we can always sleep in them, then wear them again tomorrow and no one will care a bit. G Amanda Kirkland is a Georgia girl who fell in love with a redneck and had five beautiful redneck children. She spends her days taking care of those five kids, about 25 cows, 100 chickens and a garden that has fed her family for at least three decades.

Digressions Of

DD A Dilettante

Tiny Hands at Work BY Bud Hearn

Something fundamental is happening. Have you noticed? Things are changing fast. Children are becoming billionaires overnight. Their fingers monetize everything new. Nothing’s safe. Irrelevance stalks our generation. Tiny hands are at work, at play, at war. Minds are being colonized by apps, digits and pixels. Communication is instantaneous. Societies are in peril of disruption, of overnight obsolescence. Status quo hobbles into the ICU on crutches. Earlier this week we babysat our niece’s two children. For those with young children, mechanical hand-held gadgets that glow and capture imaginations are commonplace, but we were astonished by the dexterity and speed of their tiny fingers. God only knows the speed of their brains. I sat with the boy, age 7, watching his tiny hands move mountains, build cities, map brains, explore planets and, yes, murder en masse jihadist extremists. The X-box disc, The Call of Duty, is indeed a savage game. Children are fascinated with war games. Best we could muster as children were back-yard skirmishes with dirt forts, bulwarks and towers built with our hands. We’d outflank our enemies with a few rubber soldiers, a couple of plastic tanks and make mouth noises, tat-tat-tat-tat, that sounded like machine guns. Shooting was different with us. ‘Keepers’ with marbles was the only zero-sum game we played. Today, tiny hands avoid dirt under their nails, or skinned knees. They don’t go barefoot, fly kites, jump rope, race bikes or skate. They play inside, get obese or worse, and expect instant gratification, which was never a real-world concept…until now. Tiny hands dwell in the realm of digital ether. Personal relationships are virtual, vacuous and sometimes viral. They lack the meaning that face-time encounters furnish. They create unmapped universes whose future is yet unwritten. The language in the machine talks to them because they’re writing it. Their fingers do the talking. Tongues are unessential. I look at my hands. Soft flesh. The hands of a writer of contracts, of stories; a musician, a gym man. No stubby nails. No grease stains. Scant evidence remains of ancient blisters from a childhood of farm work. The calloused palms come now from dumbbells. Tractors and lawn mowers operate by GPS. Drones plant crops and drop bombs. Cars park themselves. Work is outsourced. American economic Colonialism thrives.

52

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

It’s said that hands can reveal a lot about a person’s life. If so, then what might they prophesy about the life of today’s children? Scary. Take a look at your hands. Gypsies contend the lines in one’s palms reveal destiny. Mystics say destiny is in fate, not palms. However, it’s an indisputable fact…destiny can still shaped by the work of our hands. The tiny hands of today are unveiling an unfamiliar world, a landscape where surgery is done by robotics, where destruction can rain from the sky at the command of an index finger on a tiny remote in Nevada. My mind fast forwards to a world of robots. I see myself soon making an appointment with one for a bank loan. My life is exposed, evaluated, scored and a verdict rendered…yes or no, all in a matter of seconds. The good-old-boy regime is history. Everyone’s equal. The boy with tiny hands…will they become bloody or benign? A greater question falls to us: Will our hands help him make that choice? G Bud Hearn was born in Valdosta and grew up in Colquitt. Talks

An “Alternative” Way to Invest Prepared BY Joel Bickmore

For the past three years or more economists, brokers, and a myriad of talking heads in the investment business have been screaming about the effects of rising interest rates on bond portfolios. For those of you who are unfamiliar let me explain: When interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds decline. Minor movements in interest rates can have a rather sizeable effect on the value of bond portfolios and many advisors have been counseling clients to consider moving their bond holdings towards the short end of the yield curve. Doing so can limit the effects of rising interest rates, but it can also limit returns. But what if you don’t want to limit returns? Traditional diversification uses two main asset classes: stocks and bonds. Investors use bonds to balance out a stock portfolio and lower the overall risk of the portfolio. Given that bonds will be impacted if and when rates begin to rise, traditional diversification may not make sense going forward. If you don’t want to limit your returns and you are willing to take on more risk, you can easily choose to replace the bonds with stocks. But not everyone wants to assume more risk, so what other options are out there? There’s a buzz word in the industry right now around “alternative assets.” Alternatives have been around for many years, but haven’t been accepted en masse except among institutional and other wealthy investors. The famous endowments of Harvard and Yale have been raising their exposures to alternative asset classes for years. Examples of alternative strategies can be as simple as owning real assets, such as timber land or infrastructure. An example of a more complex strategy might employ long positions (a bullish bet) alongside short positions (a negative bet) to create a marketneutral investment. Alternative strategies typically have lower correlations to stock and bond market movements and therefore can lower the risk level of a traditional stock and bond portfolio without limiting returns. This is one key reason I have been introducing some of my clients to these strategies.

54

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

The goal of introducing alternative investments into a portfolio is to gain a broader exposure to additional asset classes. While alternatives can expand diversification, as usual there is no guarantee that an investor will make money. What they do provide, however, are new opportunities for positive returns when traditional assets such as stocks and bonds are not returning desired results. Interest rates have been falling for the past 30 years which has created a 30-year bull market for bonds. Going forward, I don’t know if that will be the case, so additional asset classes may be necessary to maintain diversification and performance. So to sum things up, if you’re concerned about the impact a rising rate environment will have on your portfolio and you’re looking for ways to potentially enhance its risk-return profile, then alternative assets may be a good “alternative” to consider. Design Now, Build After B Y C a lv i n C o ll i n s

Outdoor projects can be difficult to put together because of the sheer number of specialists involved. You have your sprinkler guy, your grass guy, your pool guy, your fence guy, your carpenter guy and who knows how many others. It can be overwhelming, but good design – including a drawn-out plan and a project schedule – will take the frustration out of the equation.

Don’t talk about it. Don’t just dream about it. Do it. This applies very directly to the realm of outdoor design or outdoor living spaces. Just design it. Call a designer or just sit down at the kitchen table and sketch out your vision using your child’s crayons. Forget about judgment, critics and perfect straight lines. This doesn’t mean you have to be a professional designer or architect. The point is to start creating.

Procrastination is the perfectionists’ greatest tool.

The great thing about outdoor design is that it really awakens the youthful side of people. Fresh air, swimming, cooking, relaxing and playing are all things we associate with outside spaces. Coincidentally most of us were more closely connected with these elements of joy and rejuvenation when we were younger. But that doesn’t mean that connection has to be lost.

“I will do that when I am ready for it,” you might say. ”There are so many elements to think about. I need to get my head around it first before I do that,” you might decide. “I need a perfect budget set before I start that process,” you might think. Though these are good statements to consider when designing a living space, they are often the things that keep you from realizing your dream. You see, out of many sages I have studied, books I’ve read, and business models I have researched there is one very essential key to the success of something being created: That key is starting it. Just doing it.

56

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

A good outdoor design starts with a consultation listing out all ideas of function, style, utility and most important, in my book, fun. And then comes the main question: How does this outdoor space improve your life and the ones you share it with? Before you can answer that, you need a layout, a realistic budget, and a time line. Whatever it is you want to create, just do it. Well

Dentistry is about more than just your teeth P r e p a r e d B Y A n g e l a B r i tt , DMD

Before “New You Dentures”

After “New You Dentures”

Did you know that TMJ Disorder (Temporomandibular Disorder) can affect denture wearers? Many people don’t realize what an important role muscles play in dentistry, with teeth or without teeth. When experiencing TMJ disorder symptoms, your jaw posturing muscles may be overworked in trying to maintain your present “programmed” position, even when you think they are relaxed.

This harmony can be achieved by relaxing and reprogramming the muscles. A bite computer is used to determine the optimal position (physiologic occlusion) of the jaw after relaxing the muscles with mild electrical muscle stimulation. Once the muscles are relaxed, the bite is designed to fit together into that comfortable position with an orthotic. The orthotic is worn during this diagnostic phase and at this point, nothing is done to permanently alter your teeth or your bite. After a determined period of time, a decision can then be made how to alter the bite permanently with orthodontics or porcelain veneers on back teeth or even porcelain veneers on all the teeth.

Head posture can also affect the way your teeth or dentures come together and muscles that control head posture are mainly in the neck and upper back. Together, these conditions can lead to a host of problems including a less-than-ideal bite, muscle pain, or jaw joint problems. Some of the common signs or symptoms of TMJ Disorder can be: • Pain in the face and jaw • Jaw joint pain • Pain in the muscles • Difficulty biting or pain when biting or chewing • Jaw joint noise or clicking • A change in how the upper and lower jaw fit together • Limited jaw opening • Teeth grinding • Neck Pain • Pain in and around the ear • Ringing in the ear • Vertigo The goal of neuromuscular dentistry is to harmonize teeth or denture position, muscles and the jaw joints. We call this getting the bite right. Neuromuscular dentistry is a term applied to techniques that expand upon the traditional approach to dentistry and considers the entire system that controls the positioning and function of the jaw.

58

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

The side benefit of getting the bite right can be a more youthful, refreshed, rejuvenated look by enhancing the cosmetics. Worn, chipped, cracked teeth can be covered with porcelain to change the size, shape and color of the teeth. Often times, wrinkles around the eyes and mouth are decreased by improving the bite and this is why we refer to it as a nonsurgical face lift. These techniques can also be used for patients with dentures. The same principles are used to determine the correct jaw positioning. “New You Dentures” not only look great and give facial support but can also help with symptoms that may be a result from TMJ disorder. We also refer to “New You Dentures” as a surgery-free face lift because the results can help achieve a more youthful, refreshed look, often helping patients look 10 to 15 years younger. Results that are accomplished with porcelain crowns or veneers can also be achieved with “New You Dentures” and patients don’t feel like they are wearing dentures anymore. Spring Cleaning for Your Golf Game B Y R i c k M att o x

If you are looking forward to the Spring golf season, you’re not alone. Many professionals, retired people, and young people alike enjoy going to the greens in the Spring. But you want to be ready. For those of you who really take your game seriously, here are a few tips that you can practice at home to improve your golf game. While there are a lot of different specific things you can do to prepare, these three golf tips commonly offered fall into three basic categories. 1. Work on your stance/body positions. Professionals agree that you need to really work on making your body movements work for you, not against you. Anchor your foot behind the ball before you take the shot, keeping your right elbow close to your hip and relaxing your muscles so that the club does most of the work. When you finally take the shot, rotate your hips vigorously so that your body helps with the acceleration, and practice a controlled shorter swing for a longer drive. These are some physical things you can do to

Make your own good luck.

Not long after I made the Golden Isles my new home, I had the pleasure of meeting a couple that had been married 60 years. I was awed by the fact that they were wed twice as long as I had been alive. A relative newlywed myself, I felt obliged to ask what their secret was to such an enduring relationship. The lady of the house gazed down at her hands crossed gracefully in her lap. She contemplated the question for what felt like an eternity. Finally, she looked back up at me. Her reply came with the most genteel southern accent; “Honey,

ne recent Sunday afternoon Bruce and Sharon Nash-Jones treated a guest at their home to a hot cup of rooibos tea from their native South Africa, its crisp aroma and distinctive nutty flavor creating a pleasant distraction. All but forgotten was the fact that the Nash residence was floating in a driving rain storm with winds gusting at 20 mph across choppy waters. Their residence is Karizma, which to be precise is a 53-foot catamaran sailboat docked at the Morning Star Marina off St. Simons Island. But that is a trivial distinction. For Bruce and Sharon, “Welcome Aboard” means “Welcome Home.”

M ay/Ju n e 2 0 1 4

73

“I prefer this to a house,” says Bruce while sitting at his cozy dining table, rain splashing against the starboard window just a couple of feet behind him. “I love the water. The closer I am to the water, the happier I am.”

Bruce and Sharon Nash-Jones

“When you’re on a boat, the little things that people tend to get caught up with just don’t seem to matter,” Sharon adds. Those sentiments are shared by a veritable fleet of full-time boaters who have stepped away from dry land to follow their dreams of floating through life. They live in constant motion, and quite often their homes rise and recede in loyal rhythm to the shifting tides of the Golden Isles. When it is time for a change of scenery, they simply cast off and set a course for new horizons. Just ask Rick and Leanne Lowman, friends and neighbors of the Nash-Joneses at Morning Star Marina. The Lowmans live aboard ToucAnne, a 55-foot working trawler that they have lovingly remodeled with all the comforts of home. Like the Nashes, the Lowmans live for much of the year in the Golden Isles. But they are always up for a cruise to the Bahamas or an excursion back to their home waters off South Carolina. “That’s the easy part of living on a boat – wherever we are, we’re home,” says Leanne, a juried artist whose acrylic works are on display in various venues on St. Simons. “It’s nice to be flexible,” says Rick, a retired engineer who helped with design work of NASA’s shuttle spacecraft in the 1970s. “We can kind of roll with the punches.” That pretty much sums up the laid-back attitude of the many fulltime boaters who find the Golden Isles to be a favorite port of call, says Morning Star Marina Manager Chris Ferguson. Between his facility, the expansive Brunswick Landing Marina on the waterfront near downtown and the Jekyll Harbor Marina on Jekyll Island, the area attracts “live aboards” from up and down the Atlantic Seaboard and, indeed, throughout the world, he says. It is known to boaters for its mild winters, Southern hospitality and the convenient accessibility of shopping and dining districts. Reserving dock space at Morning Star includes power, water, cable and even wireless internet access, Chris says. The Golden Isles have also earned the reputation as a “hurricane hole,” a safe place to dock between June and November because of its historical record of being off the radar of named storms. Perhaps no one is as in touch with the whims of wind, weather and water that define the term salt life as these live-aboard boaters. “The water splashing against the hull just lulls you to sleep at night,” Leanne Lowman says. “It’s a very soothing, very tranquil environment.”

The experiences Bruce and Sharon have enjoyed since acquiring permanent sea legs eight years ago leave no room for regrets. In their previous lives, Sharon worked with AIDS patients as a social worker in their hometown of Durban, South Africa. Bruce was a construction contractor there. But he had always dreamed of following in the wake of his childhood hero, American Robert Lee Graham, whose five-year odyssey circumnavigating the globe in a 24-foot sailboat as a teenager in the 1960s was chronicled in the book, Dove. With their two children grown and in college, the Nash-Joneses made a decision to ditch the landlubbers’ rat race. “We had two options,” Bruce recalls. “We could either work until we dropped dead or see the world and realize we’re not going to retire wealthy.”

Indeed, within the hour of that recent visit on the Nash-Joneses’ boat, the rain storm passes, the sun streaks its way through the clouds and the couple strolls along the docks like a residential sidewalk to visit neighboring boaters. “We’re very happy here,” Bruce says. “It’s easy living; the people are wonderful.”

They have since logged more than 20,000 nautical miles, the bulk of it aboard the Ocean Spice, the 37-foot catamaran in which they first set sail from Durban. The initial leg of their journey took them up the east African coast into the Indian Ocean, with extended stays in exotic Madagascar and Tanzania. From there they ventured around the Horn of Africa and across the Atlantic Ocean to South America and the Caribbean.

Marina manager Chris says, “I always tell people, a boat is the most economical oceanfront property you’ll ever own. It’s all about the experience.”

“I think we’ve seen so much that money can’t buy,” Sharon says.

74

g o l d e n isle smagazine .c o m

The most complicated aspect of their lives nowadays is explaining how they landed aboard the Karizma two years ago. The boat belongs to a wealthy New Zealand doctor, who learned of the couple’s seamanship and availability through his boating contacts in South Africa. They “house sit” the Karizma for him and serve as captains when the doctor’s family vacations on the boat each year in the Bahamas. Bruce and Sharon originally sailed it here from Nassau, Bahamas. Sharon describes it as “pure luxury” compared to their smaller catamaran, which is also docked locally. Before these two world travelers took command of Karizma and arrived on the Georgia Bight, this corner of the world might as well have been on the moon. “We were like, where in the heck is Georgia?” Sharon says. But upon landing in the Golden Isles, they quickly found kindred spirits among the congregation of St. Simons Christian Renewal Church. Other friendly contacts branched out from there as they have grown fond of St. Simons and the indigenous peoples’ renowned hospitality. “The next thing you know, people are bringing trays of food to us on the boat,” Sharon says. “Who does that? How wonderful. We came here not knowing anybody and now we feel very welcome everywhere we go.” “Everybody is so pleasant and so obliging here,” Bruce says. “We love it, love it, love it.” The Lowmans didn’t have to cross an ocean to find the Golden Isles but their journey has been no less rewarding. When the two met 18 years ago at a lake community in Hartsville, S.C., they had a common bond. “We both knew we wanted a lifestyle of cruising,” Leanne says. After his stint at Pratt & Whitney in the 1970s as part of the project and design team that helped develop the space shuttle for NASA, Rick spent another 30 years as an engineer for a paper and packing company in his native South Carolina. “I’ve never been without a boat since I got out of college and then I retired at 55 to do this,” he says. Call it retirement if you want, but Rick’s base skill sets have been in constant demand since he and Leanne committed to the trawler in 1998. The hull had to be rebuilt before the boat was launched in 2002. In the early days they slept in sleeping bags on loose plywood boards inside the ToucAnne, also known as “Iron Annie.” Today that same interior features a spacious salon with hardwood flooring, paneled walls, comfortable seating and spacious windows for a waterfront view all around. “One of the nice things about being on the water is seeing the sunrise and sunsets,” Rick said. The adjoining kitchen has everything you’d find in a house on land. The Lowmans are “happy herbivores” who grind their own wheat and cook all their meals on board.

bedroom in the bow, a guest cabin, and a washer and dryer. The head is cramped, but has all that you need in a home bathroom. Solar panels produce power for their generator and a reverse osmosis system provides fresh water at sea. The salon doubles as Leanne’s art studio. Surprisingly, Leanne barely knew how to hold a brush until they docked at Sapelo Island five years ago while refitting the ToucAnne. Lessons under well-known local artist Barbara Mueller helped her tap a wellspring of talent. And from there you can follow the couple’s adventures in the paintings she creates and sells along the way. Her tropical and saltwater landscapes feature unique details of their experience, from the “Marsh Cows” grazing along the Altamaha River to the “Swimming Pigs” paddling the waters off Exuma in the Bahamas. “Our lifestyle on the boat is the inspiration for my art,” she says. “I like to paint all the nature and adventures we encounter while on the boat. I’m a happy cruising artist. I don’t know if I could live the other way again.” G Larry Hobbs is a former newspaper reporter with 20 years experience as a writer, including stints with The Palm Beach Post, The Palm Beach Daily News and Florida

f ashion show is like a symphony orchestra; so many hands working in harmony to create the beautiful whole. Think of the clothing designer as the conductor, the visionary who directs the various players – models, stylists, seamstresses, lighting engineers and gofers – in the staging of the masterpiece. Considered in those terms, the idea of hosting a couture fashion show to raise funds for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia is a stroke of pure genius. That’s exactly what a group of symphony

B e h i n d t h e Sce ne s Seeing a fashion show from both sides is a sobering experience. The business of beauty is no walk in the park. It’s long hours of tedium punctuated by moments of sheer terror disguised by gorgeous clothes, pounds of hair pins and spray, and copious helpings of make-up. The effect is nothing short of stunning. Join us for a peek behind the curtain at the Fashion Weeks at Sea Island fundraiser benefitting the Coastal Symphony of Georgia March 18, and stay tuned for news about next year’s event.

MAKERS

Liza Anne Odachowski BY S h a n n o n L e w i s

N

ot six months ago singer-songwriter Liza Anne’s primary fan base was, apart from a few college friends in Nashville, still local. Liza has held sway over the hearts – and inspired the creative lives – of every high school girl in the Golden Isles that has ever owned a guitar or hoped to write an original song. However, with the release of her new national full-length debut, The Colder Months, all of that has changed. In February Liza and I meet for coffee at the Frothy Monkey, directly across the street from Nashville’s Belmont University where she is currently a student. She is obviously elated. “You will never guess who just called,” she exclaims. “Ryan Seacrest wants to feature me on his website!” And so this year has gone for Liza: Features on MTV, VH1, CMT, American Songwriter magazine – her cover of Miley Cyrus’s Wrecking Ball has gotten over 92,000 hits and counting on YouTube. Liza Anne is quickly becoming a household name among music aficionados worldwide. Liza grew up on St. Simons Island, the eldest daughter of Joe and Lester Odachowski. Her mother noticed early on that she was an internal processor and very observant. The gift of a journal seemed an obvious outlet. Liza explains: “Writing became an addiction. I couldn’t stop. It wasn’t until I was almost fourteen that I began humming the words I’d put to paper, and picked up the guitar. With the encouragement of some kind souls from church, I began to sing them for others.” Lester offers some insight on her daughter’s incredible creativity. “Liza has always been a dreamer and had such strong emotions. I think her emotions and dreams could’ve almost overwhelmed her. When she started writing it was an outlet for that. I sometimes laugh and say that if she hadn’t started writing she would have literally exploded.” Regarding her contemporary influences, Liza names Noah Gundersen, Ryan Adams, and Brandi Carlile (“She creates such honest and telling stories through her songs.”) She calls Wes Anderson films “such a beautiful thing.” However, Liza’s primary inspiration isn’t the art of others. “I’m inspired by my environment. My community in Nashville is full of creatives I admire. My conversations create a pool of inspiration to draw from,” she says, adding: “We put out what we take in. I want to experience what moves me so I can, in return, move others.”

The Colder Months, her debut full-length CD, and its title track in particular are a dark, brooding, contemplative affair. It’s almost unnerving to listen to a recording so full of self-doubt and questioning, knowing it came from someone so outwardly confident, bold, intelligent, and well-spoken. The experience of hearing it for the first time is akin to sneaking a peak at someone’s diary. Sitting somewhere between the Singer-Songwriter and Alternative Country genres, the music is sparse and atmospheric and at times it’s hard to determine which instrument is creating a certain melody or mood. The electric guitar tones float so gently in the background that they can easily be mistaken for a string section of cellos, violas, and violins. It isn’t surprising that it’s drawing so much attention. “It wasn’t until recently that I felt I’d begun to find my voice, my own sound,” Liza says. “I found that the albums and artists that most moved me were the ones who gave me permission to simply sit and be. I want to be and do that for others.” Given the current buzz, it appears those dreams are coming true. A former junior intern with The Gathering Place in Brunswick, Liza flew home this past February to perform special music at the organization’s annual fundraiser on Jekyll Island. “I feel privileged coming from a place where I was loved, believed in, and encouraged. I’m always excited to return to my hometown. They’ve gracefully loved me through all of my stages, from Kesha covers in coffee shops through all of my various hair colors. The Golden Isles is such a very sweet place to me.” Liza is currently performing a string of house shows across the United States while wrapping up this semester of college. Having already garnered a following in the UK as well, she’ll be touring Europe for much of this Summer. For updates on Liza Anne’s music, tour dates, blogs, and press visit her website, www.LizaAnneMusic.com. G Shannon Lewis is the Director of Youth and Contemporary Worship at First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, and an ardent music consumer and creator. You can visit Shannon at www.SaintLewisMusic.com where he regular shares thoughts on spirituality and the latest releases in equal measure.

Roy Yarger BY C y l e L e w i s | P h o t o g r a p h y B y J o e L o e h l e

W

here others see an ordinary tree stump, storm debris, or the detritus left over from land-clearing activities, master woodturner Roy Yarger sees a skillfully crafted bowl, a pepper mill, a disc vase, or an urn. An awards-winning craftsman, Roy’s pepper mills have taken first place in the Georgia National Fair four years running. “I’ve always worked with wood. I started woodworking as soon as I was old enough to hold a tool.” Roy is a woodturning artist, teacher, demonstrator, and a member of the Golden Isles Woodworkers – a local organization which promotes the enjoyment of woodworking craft. Similar to the methods used in spinning pottery, a woodturner spins wood on a lathe, applying an assortment of chisels and adjusting speed to shape the wood into something new, beautiful, and even useful. Hailing from Michigan, Roy began his professional career in the Navy as an electronics technician. Laughing, he recalls a brief training stint at Glynco. “I had no idea I’d migrate back South one day, but here I am.” Studying electrical engineering at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., he left after two and a half years to get married and accepted a job with IBM. There he maintained and repaired large mainframes, which later led into various management positions. He provided technical support for the 1980 and 1984 Olympic games, and served as manager of event operations for the Atlanta Olympic Stadium during the 1996 Olympics. “It was a lot of fun until the bomb (detonated in Centennial Olympic Park). The rest of the week was frightful.” Roy inherited his talent for woodworking from his father. “He even built the houses we lived in,” Roy says, recalling the hours spent in his dad’s workshop with projects underway. “It was 1988 when my father gave me my first lathe, a Sears Craftsman. I was instantly hooked.” Sharing stories of woodworking classes and early remodeling projects, he points to household items, saying with subdued pride, “I made this.” Even the table at which we are seated, and it is a beauty. “Woodturning has been around forever, long before motors and electricity. It’s an ancient fine art, dating back to the beginning of humanity.” Roy and his wife have a two-car-garage-turned-studio, fully equipped with lathes of various sizes, a wall full of chisels, and other woodworking machines.

Using cherry, walnut, or maple, he begins by removing the bark and assessing the grain to build on those unique characteristics. “I like to enhance what Mother Nature makes, not take away from it.” Roy takes commissioned projects and often people give him pieces of wood with sentimental value, requesting that he “make something nice out of this.” He takes special care in crafting one-of-a-kind pieces. “A major step in the creative process is getting the shape right for that particular piece of wood.” When observing these pieces one can see where attention to form and measurement must be exact. Roy free-hands the design. The measurement of the piece is partially pre-determined by what that particular wood piece will allow. There is no pattern or form to follow with woodturning, which is why each finished item is truly unique. Some pieces – such as his pepper mill – require the shaping of multiple pieces, then careful assembly, as well as the use of adhesives. The most time-intensive process is applying the oil finish, involving multiple steps of application, buffing, drying, and sanding. Roy says he “fell in love with this place” while participating in local art shows, including Glynn Art in the Park. He relocated from Marietta in 2006. “I was lured by the nicer weather and lack of heavy traffic and the slower pace of life.” Roy teaches one-on-one lessons to locals interested in the art form. He also stages live demos for local schools, and has published several how-to articles for Woodturning Design Magazine, chronicling both his step-by-step instructions and his own original designs. One of his woodturned vases was even featured on the cover. Roy feels that woodturning is one of the ways that he, as an individual, can preserve a little of a tree that once lived and stood proud. “I strive to give each piece of wood a new life,” he says. Currently, his original woodturned pieces can be found locally at Glynn Art Association, Parker Art Gallery on St. Simons, and Goodyear Cottage, part of the Jekyll Island Art Association. Learn more about Roy by visiting his website at www.turnedart.com. Drop him a line at woodworker@giww.org. G Telling the Story, Cyle Lewis is a freelance writer, entrepreneur, wife and mom, find out more at CyleAugusta.com where she tells the stories that inspire peace and spread hope.

Billy Bice BY Am y C a r t e r

E

verywhere he goes, Capt. Dr. Billy Bice finds a lesson. The son of a Georgia Southern University professor, Billy grew up in Statesboro and into his own career in education. He was named principal of a Bulloch County elementary school in his third year of teaching, and high school principal his fourth. “I had students older than I was,” he jokes. “You should never be a 27-year-old high school principal.” From there he moved up to serving as superintendent of the Bulloch County and Dalton Public Schools. He retired in 2000 and moved to Atlanta to work as an investment banker overseeing school bond issues, but found himself missing the kind of outdoor adventures he’s enjoyed from childhood in South Georgia. “I’m not an Atlanta kind of guy,” he says, and made plans to return to Statesboro when a stop on St. Simons Island convinced him and his wife, Florence Ann, they were meant to be elsewhere. “Within a week we bought a house,” he says, and that’s when the fun really began. In fact, that’s Capt. Dr. Billy’s motto: “Have fun! If you don’t have fun now, when are you going to have it?” When you’re aboard the Billy Bee, for sure. A 22-foot Pathfinder bay boat, the Billy Bee charters out for nearshore fishing trips off the beaches and in the creeks and rivers of the Golden Isles. The boat and her captain cater to families but focus on children. “There’s nothing more exciting than watching a child catch a fish, especially their first fish,” Billy says. To that end, each specimen landed is respectfully inspected and discussed, and then returned from whence it came. “We put (the catch) back in the ocean and everybody goes home happy,” Billy says. To give more children the opportunity to find happiness on the water, Billy started The World’s Largest Kids’ Fishing Rodeo, held on St. Simons Island during the July 4th weekend for the past three years. The goal is to catch a Patriotic Slam – a redfish, a whiting and a blue fish. Everyone who does so wins a prize and learns a priceless lesson. The tournament runs on the honor system; children take an oath to catch and release on the water and bring nothing but the truth back to the hill. The tournament has raised about $10,000 to date, all of it earmarked for the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia, and attendance

broke the 100 mark this past summer. While that may not sound like the world’s largest, Billy says no one has challenged the name yet, except for friend and rodeo helper Brooks Schoen. When Billy explained the concept to Brooks over lunch at the ChickFil-A on St. Simons Island, Brooks asked: “Well, is it going to be the largest?” He recalls Billy answering: “It will be until somebody tells us it isn’t.” Brooks, a fellow Coast Guard-licensed captain and avid fisherman, lives in Atlanta but owns a second home on Sea Island. He gave the tournament a boost by approaching a neighbor on Sea Island who also happens to sit on the board of directors of Zebco, a national maker of fishing rods and reels. Zebco gave $5,000 seed money to the tournament that first year, and the board member purchased 100 rods and reels to give free to every child who registered to fish. Sponsors also include Coca-Cola, West Marine and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as local companies like McGinty-Gordon Insurance, Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals, Sal’s Pizza, Halyards and Tramici, Mr. Tee’s Shirts, Paramount Printing, Coastal Eye Care, the Strike Zone, Zaxby’s Brunswick and many generous individuals. A Peter Pan figure who traded his woodland garb for salt style, Billy seems ageless when he talks of fishing and kids in the same sentence. “He has a real affection for young people,” Brooks says. “I don’t have grandchildren of my own,” Billy says, “so I get to borrow them for a while.” G

H

ooks go in the water 8 a.m. July 5 for the 4th annual World’s Largest Kids’ Fishing Rodeo. Prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. at tournament headquarters, the Gascoigne Bluff picnic area. Register for $25 per team at ChickFil-A St. Simons between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 30 and July 1-3, and between noon and 2 p.m. July 4th. Each child who registers will receive a rod and reel plus other treats, as well as a raffle ticket for door prizes donated by the sponsors.
