Editor’s Note I actually overheard someone somewhere say that recently. Of course, Susan Sarandon said it best in the movie Bull Durham (1988), one of my all-time favorite films. There’s so little mystery to be had these days, what with all the skimpy clothes, reality shows, oversharing on social media and a 24-hour news cycle. I tend to agree with what Don Henley sang in Dirty Laundry: “You don’t really need to find out what’s going on. You don’t really want to know just how far it’s gone.” A few hours of ignorance each day really would be bliss. Off the subject for just a sec: We actually had a bubbleheaded bleached-blonde newscaster here once, just like the one in Dirty Laundry. She, too, could “tell you ‘bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye.” She and I worked a plane crash of national import together once. I remember a Saturday morning press conference punctuated by the stomp of her stiletto heel when CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times all got their questions answered before she got hers asked. Most of us wore our restraint to the sad duty of telling that tragic story. She wore fuchsia high heels. Bless her heart. Sometimes, life is a lot like a movie or a song, don’t you think? I guess that’s why certain lines and lyrics – like those from Bull Durham and Dirty Laundry – stay with me. I suspect it’s also why the classic lines from movies like Casablanca or The Wizard of Oz or even A Christmas Story resonate with us all. “You’ll shoot your eye out,” indeed. Life might have been like a box of chocolates for Forest Gump and his Mama, but for us here at Golden Isles Magazine, it’s an open book. We’re extremely honored to give you a peak behind the scenes at one of the Golden Isles’ best-kept secrets, Musgrove Plantation. The Bagley family has graciously opened its photo albums to us and happily shared memories of a place that’s left a large impression not just on four generations of their own family, but also on the world. 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the Episcopal Churchwomen of Christ Church Frederica’s Tour of Homes, and Musgrove is the only private residence to be featured on the tour every single year since its inception. It’s also the only one to have ever hosted a presidential retreat. We’ll also introduce you to the movie-loving side of Rob Nixon, great and powerful wizard of movie programming at the Ritz Theatre, who knows a ton about great stories of the silver screen and has been sharing them online at Turner Classic Movies (www.tcm.com) for more than a decade. Look him up. There’s good stuff on every page, y’all, so kindly silence your cell phones and settle in for some good stories. Of all the magazines, all over town, you chose to read ours. Here’s looking at you. Amy H. Carter Editor

“You Be The Judge” is A Taste of Glynn Theme for 2013 A Taste of Glynn, the annual celebration of culinary, artistic and entertainment talent, will take place on Sunday, March 24 at the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island. This year marks the 13th year for the popular event, which features an evening of fine food as local professional chefs compete for the People’s Choice Award. A silent auction offers an array of valuable items, including works by local artists, resort vacation packages and a large selection of gifts as well as a wine raffle. All proceeds from A Taste of Glynn benefit the Glynn Community Crisis Center’s Amity House and Hope House, which offer shelter, services and a new beginning for those who experience domestic violence. For the 13th Annual A Taste of Glynn, the theme is “You Be the Judge”. This year’s Celebrity Chef is Austin Rocconi, Executive Chef at LeVigne Restaurant at the Montaluce Vineyards and Estate in Dahlonega. Chef Rocconi will name the Celebrity Chef’s Choice winner. This year, all other category awards will be selected by the guests at A Taste of Glynn.

Each year, more than a thousand local residents and visitors gather at the elegant oceanfront resort to enjoy the best cuisine on the Georgia coast and entertainment by popular local musicians. Area restaurants, caterers and resorts are eager to showcase new and trademark dishes at A Taste of Glynn, and the guests reap the benefits of the good-natured rivalry. “There is always something new and exciting to taste each year,” notes event co-chair Gerri Landrum. “And you couldn’t find a more spectacular place to enjoy yourself than the King and Prince. Imagine sampling some of the best food on the planet, with great music, right beside the Atlantic Ocean at a grand historic hotel on a spring evening.” A Taste of Glynn is presented by Stambaugh Aviation, as well as many other local businesses and individuals. Tickets are $50 per person in advance, or $60 at the door. They can be purchased at participating companies throughout the Golden Isles, or by calling Amity House at (912)264-1348. For more information on the event and ticket sales locations, visit www.atasteofglynn.com or call 264-1348. – Submitted by Jane Bozza/Faulkenberry Certain Advertising

CoastalQueue Tabby ruins at Cannon’s Point Plantation.

Relive the Splendor of Cannon’s Point during History Weekend Cannon’s Point Plantation will be resurrected in all its verdant splendor when the Coastal Georgia Historical Society hosts its first Celebration of History Weekend later this month. The A.W. Jones Heritage Center at the foot of the St. Simons Lighthouse will stand sted for the grand plantation house and grounds of John Couper’s Cannon’s Point March 23-25. It is there that Virginian Rob Coles will portray his fifth-great-grandfather and the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, in two lecture events. The first, a Children’s Social with Thomas Jefferson, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24 at the Heritage Center. It is free for students in grades 2 through 6. At 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, Coles will again present a lecture as Thomas Jefferson titled “Thomas Jefferson: The Man Behind the Myth.” Admission is $25 for Historical Society members and $35 for non-members. Although Jefferson was never known to visit Cannon’s Point, he shared similar interests in horticulture with John Couper, who was renowned for the enlightened way that he cultivated his plantation on the north end of St. Simons Island. Not only was he a recognized expert in the growing of sea island long staple cotton, but he also experiemented with a great many fruit and vegetable crops not native to this area. “John Couper surrounded his home with many varieties of trees, shrubs, fruits and flowers which he thought he could

grow in the soil of coastal Georgia,” explains Dawn Hart, owner of Ace Garden Center on St. Simons. Dawn and her son, Henry Hart, have been studying the history of Cannon’s Point in preparation for re-creating Couper’s gardens for the Celebration of History. The garden will be restaged in the foyer of the Heritage Center. “It is our desire to depict the ambiance of garden life from the period as well as illustrate (Couper’s) pioneering horticultural spirit. Guests will enter the logia of the Heritage Center to vignettes of olive trees and “orchards” of oranges, peaches, nectarines, figs, grapes and lemons,” Dawn says. “Palms and flowers from the plantation days will accentuate the “feel” of his garden and Mr. Couper’s delight in sharing it with his guests.” In October 2012, the St. Simons Land Trust in concert with benefactors Hank and Wendy Paulson and Pete and Ada Correll completed the purchase of the 608-acre site of the historic Cannon’s Point Plantation off Lawrence Road. The site – which includes extensive tabby ruins of Couper’s plantation house – will be preserved for recreational use. ACE Garden Center, Hunter Maclean Attorneys and Parker’s are presenting sponsors for the Celebration of History Weekend. – Amy Carter

2nd International Festival Continues the Work of a Native Son and Early Civil Rights Visionary On Friday, April 12, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., the second International Culture and Food Festival will be held on the campus of the College of Coastal Georgia. Titled “One World – Many Faces,” this event will celebrate the diverse heritage of our community through art, food, and entertainment. There is no admission fee. The festival will feature a food court where a number of ethnic eateries in the Golden Isles will offer tastes from various countries and cultures. There will also be a marketplace that will feature a diverse array of artisan wares. Campus student groups, including the Dance and International Clubs, have organized entertainment for the main festival area including Salsa dance lessons, a steel drum performance and Chinese Lion as well as African dance troupes. Additional entertainment as well as storytelling presentations on different cultures, international games for children, demonstrations of cultural life in foreign lands, and participatory activities for at-

tendees will be held nearby in the campus’ new lakeside pavilion. The festival is co-sponsored by the College’s Student Affairs office and the Robert S. Abbott Race Unity Institute. Its purpose is to help foster understanding and build ties of friendship among people of different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds. But, who is Robert Abbott? He was the founder of what became the most widely circulated African-American newspaper in the nation and he is commonly regarded as the greatest single force in African-American journalism. He was among this country’s earliest self-made African-American millionaires. And, he was born in a tin-roofed house on St. Simons Island in November 1868. Abbott’s parents had achieved their freedom five years earlier be-

Robert Abbott’s mother, Flora, moved her infant son to Savannah where she eventually married John Sengstacke, a bi-racial Congregational minister and printer who was raised in Germany. Robert Abbott’s childhood immersion in a multiracial environment fostered a strong belief in both the necessity and inevitability for all people to come together in unity and friendship, a belief he demonstrated in the way he lived each day of his life. Despite an extensive education which included earning a law degree from Chicago’s Kent College of Law in 1898, Abbott was unsuccessful not only in establishing a career but in even securing permanent employment, in large measure because of the darkness of his skin. Despite the likelihood that he would again fail, Abbott decided that his future lay in launching his own newspaper, even though Chicago already had three marginally successful black newspapers. Abbott named his paper The Chicago Defender and made arrangements to print a first edition on credit. He rented a desk in a real estate office and moved in equipment consisting of a folding card table and a borrowed kitchen chair. His total remaining capital was 25 cents, which he used to buy notebooks and pencils. The first weekly issue of the Defender appeared on the streets May 5, 1905. Abbott printed 300 copies at a cost of $13.75. Initially he barely kept the paper alive, but within a few years the company occupied a three-story building, employed a large production staff, owned its own printing press and produced more than 250,000 copies of the paper each week. The Defender has been published continuously for over a century. What elevated The Defender to national prominence was not only Abbott’s entrepreneurial skills but his fierce opposition to racism. He endeavored ceaselessly to educate his race to demand their right to equality and to make the world aware of the atrocities his people had endured. Circulating the newspaper in the Southern states was a huge challenge because of the opposition it faced from many southern groups. Abbott hit on an ingenious plan: he recruited entertainers and Pullman porters who brought bundle after bundle of the paper into the south. As a young boy growing Ma rch /A pri l 2 0 1 3

cause of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Thomas Abbott had opened a small grocery store but the business did not prosper. He died of tuberculosis one year after his son’s birth. So well regarded was he by his former masters that they paid for his funeral and erected a headstone, a most atypical incident. Sixty years later Robert Abbott would replace that marker with a tall obelisk of white granite. Today that monument is but a short walk from the visitor’s center at Fort Frederica.

In a 1983 study titled The Associated Negro Press, Lawrence D. Hogan declared that Abbott “was the pioneer for the Negro press as Hearst was for the White metropolitan press.” One example of Abbott’s influence is found in a series of editorials he wrote at the end of World War I encouraging southern blacks to migrate north. The campaign was so successful that the black population in Chicago and other major cities in the north and northwest tripled. Abbott was stricken with tuberculosis in 1935. In combination with Bright’s disease, this led to his death in early 1940 at the age of 71. The Abbott Institute is dedicated to fostering Robert Abbott’s vision of the oneness of humanity. The conclusion of an editorial he wrote for the 25th anniversary of The Chicago Defender eloquently summarizes that vision: “And now, thank God, the day is coming, yea, the day is almost here, when every land, from orient to Occident, from pole to pole, from mountain to shore, and from the shore to the farthest isle of the sounding sea, at last will throw off the yoke of doubt, forget biased conceptions of human rights, and join in glad acclaim by helping to usher in the glad era of an enlightened civilization and the universal acknowledgement of the brotherhood of man.” – Submitted by Bruce Whitmore

Locos Grill & Pub Donates $1,000 to Area Schools Locos Grill & Pub owner Zack Gowen recently presented checks totaling $1,000 to St. Simons Elementary and Oglethorpe Point Elementary on St. Simons Island. The donations are a result of this year’s “School Spirit Nights,” a weekly fundraising program that Locos Grill & Pub created two years ago.

“Each Thursday night, since the start of the school year, we have invited students, parents, teachers and supporters of St. Simons and Oglethorpe Point Elementary schools to dine at Locos, from which Locos donates 10 percent of dinner receipts to each school,” Zack explains. The money will be used to purchase much-needed books, educational programs and teaching resources. “We are grateful to Locos for its support of our schools. This is a wonderful boost to our fundraising efforts that allows the teachers to procure valuable educational tools for our students,” says St. Simons Elementary Principal Suzanne Clements. Carter Akins, principal of Oglethorpe Point Elementary, agrees. “Zack’s communityminded spirit along with the support of Locos’ patrons allows for an abundance of educational opportunities for the children of our schools. Having funds for more of these resources will help make our school a more literacy-rich environment. His support is deeply appreciated.” Locos Grill & Pub is located in the Shops at Demere on St. Simons Island.

Anonymous Donation Funds Construction of Lodging at the Southeast Georgia Health System Thanks to a generous donation received in late December, the Southeast Georgia Health System now has funds on hand to build a new lodging facility, similar to the Ronald McDonald House concept, which will serve as short-term residential quarters for the visiting family members of cancer and critical care patients, CyberKnife patients from outside the primary service area, and medical students rotating with the health system’s medical staff.

22

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

“We are very thankful for this gift and the opportunity to improve our patients’ and their family members’ experience,” says Gary R. Colberg, president and CEO of the health system. “We often have family members who travel from out of town to be near their loved one when they’re hospitalized, and patients who travel significant distances to receive cancer treatments. Soon, we’ll be able to offer them a comfortable home-like environment which, we hope, will help to alleviate some of their stress and anxieties.”

The facility will be located adjacent to the Brunswick Campus on Kemble Avenue, between Starling Street and Oriole Street.

Similar to a vacation time-share, each unit will be fully furnished and equipped with dinnerware and other essential items. A comfortable, welcoming common area will serve as the central entry point joining the three neighborhoods, and community laundry facilities will be available. The grounds will feature a courtyard with two existing oak trees and parking areas. “To my knowledge, this is the single largest gift the Health System has ever received,” Gary says. “This lodging facility will help us to achieve our vision of being the region’s health care provider of choice.”

The Accidental Trail-Blazer: Sharon Bolin, Woman Rotarian

• Life & Disability Income Insurance • Long Term Care Insurance • Annuity Solutions

Sharon Bolin joined Rotary International in January 1988, not long after a California lawsuit adjudged that women have just as much right be Rotarians as men. Was Sharon pining for Rotary membership prior to the California decision? No.

But when a physician friend in Oak Park, Ill., invited her to be one of the first three women granted membership in his Rotary Club, she thought, “Oh, well, it would be nice to be involved in a civic organization.” And what a great Rotarian she made. No matter where life took her, Sharon never missed a Rotary meeting. Even when life took her away from her home club – 234 times in her 25 years as a Rotarian – Sharon found the nearest and most convenient gathering of Rotarians and fellowshipped with them. Eighty-five clubs in 19 states and six foreign countries.

“Three clubs in the United Kingdom had never seen a woman Rotarian,” Sharon laughs. “It was interesting to see them react when I put out my hand and said, ‘I’m Sharon Bolin. I’m a visiting Rotarian from Oak Park, Illinois.’” They soon caught on. Sharon approached a group of men at a meeting of a Rotary Club in Brighton, England, and introduced herself. “I walked up and they said, ‘Oh, a Rotarian from the States! We had one of those last week from California. We know what to do.’” When she moved from Oak Park to the Golden Isles in 1989, Sharon began alternating between meetings of the Brunswick and St. Simons Island clubs to keep her

memberhip active. Neither club had female members at the time. Three weeks after she arrived, she had a job at MAP International, and sponsorship into the St. Simons Island Rotary Club. Typically a two-week process, her joining was delayed four months by a member who objected first in writing and then in person, solely on the basis of gender. “He said he would leave the club if a woman was inducted,” Sharon says. In the end, she was in and he was out, an outcome she never doubted. “I’d been the first woman in a couple other times. I knew it had to work. Knew it.” Why put oneself through the stress? “It was more stressful for him than for me, I think. It was fun to go every week, sitting right under his nose.” She gave him a break every now and then to attend the Brunswick club’s meetings. “They were something else,” she says. “They wouldn’t look at me. I guess they thought I was going to try to join. I never told them I was being sponsored into the St. Simons Club. I thought, ‘Let them wonder.’” Her persistence blazed the trail for Maggie Dutton and Anne Nermoe to become the second and third women to join the St. Simons Island Club. After that, at least for Sharon, it was divide and conquer. “I always attempted, when there were very few women, not to clump up. It looked like you needed each other, you couldn’t stand on your own. I knew who I was and I knew (why) I was there,” she says.

“Now it’s not so strange to be a woman Rotarian,” Sharon says. She eventually left the St. Simons Club to help organize the Marshes of Glynn Club, which merged last year with the Glynn County Club to form the Coastal Georgia Rotary Club. In January, Sharon resigned her membership and was awarded honorary membership, which offers “all the benefits and none of the responsibilities,” she quips. But seriously, what was it about Rotary that made Sharon want to pursue membership in a club that initially wouldn’t have her? The personal and professional friendships she formed. And the community service. Her club comprised the “Child in Crisis Club” that stocked a food and clothing pantry for children at Goodyear Elementary. They also respond in the middle of the night and on weekends when families of students suffer a crisis like fire. They built an outdoor classroom that serves as a reward for students who do well in school, and Sharon always looks for it when she passes by. – Amy Carter

Branson, Missouri, Comes to the Golden Isles Direct from America’s entertainment capital, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities presents Branson on the Road, a music extravaganza that brings great classic country, bluegrass, rockabilly and gospel music to the stage of the Historic Ritz Theatre in Downtown Brunswick. Because of high audience demand, the troupe will perform at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 23. In the tradition of the legendary traveling road shows, Branson on the Road mixes together fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, upright slap bass, rhinestone costumes, and hilarious comedy. It’s the kind of show most people thought was long gone in this day of overproduced music, overused special effects and performers singing to tracks. In the same tradition as the traveling road shows during the glory days of the Grand Ole Opry, the Louisiana Hayride and the first Branson music shows, Branson On The Road has been delighting audiences for more than 20 years on the famous 76 Country Music Boulevard (known as “The Strip”). The band includes Debbie Horton, the only woman to have played lead guitar for the great Johnny Cash. She hosted her own show at the old Boxcar Willie Theater in Branson and has performed on the famous Louisiana Hayride and Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree in Nashville. Also featured are Donnie Wright, an expert musician and arranger who has performed at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, The Presley’s Show in Branson, The Pine Mountain Jamboree in

your hearing health

Dr. Eric T. Linert

You are not special. This past spring I came across a curious commencement speech that was delivered to the graduating class of Wellesley High School in Massachusetts. Delivered by English teacher David McCullough, Jr., the twelveminute address has been viewed 1.8 million times on the Internet. It received mainstream news coverage and was deemed the “you are not special” speech. McCullough states that none of the graduates is special, not even exceptional. How can this be? The accolades these boys and girls have gathered over the past decade mean nothing? There are 37,000 other valedictorians, class presidents, and prom queens: one for each high school in the United States. “We Americans, to our detriment, [have] come to love accolades more than genuine achievement,” said McCullough. “We have come to see them as the point – and we’re happy to compromise standards, or ignore reality, if we suspect that’s the quickest way, or only way, to have something to put on the mantelpiece, something to pose with, crow about, something with which to leverage ourselves into a better spot on the social totem pole.” These are harsh words for a teenager that sees the world as her oyster. McCullough explains: “If you’ve learned anything in your years here I hope it’s that educationshould be for, rather than material advantage, the exhilaration of learning. You’ve learned, too, I hope, as Sophocles assured us, that wisdom is the chief element of happiness.” “I also hope you’ve learned enough to recognize how little you know...how little you know now...at the moment...for today is just the beginning. It’s where you go from here that matters.” “Exercise free will and creative, independent thought not for the satisfactions they will bring you, but for the good they will do others, the rest of the 6.8 billion–and those who will follow them. And then you too will discover the great and curious truth of the human experience is that selflessness is the best thing you can do for yourself. The sweetest joys of life, then, come only with the recognition that you’re not special. Because everyone is.” Go be your best. Reap what you sow. Engage in learning every day. Goodwill to all. Hearing For Life, Life in Balance™ Dr. Linert has lived and worked in the Golden Isles for 14 years with his wife and two daughters. He has developed his practice, Advanced Hearing & Balance Center, using the Patient Centered Approach – concentrating on improving quality of life for his patients with training, cutting edge technology, and a little common sense.

The Nature Connection

Of tides and birds by Lydia Thompson

T

he circle of life might be better described as circles within circles. The earth spins while it orbits the sun. The moon spins around the earth. The earth has a great deal of water – so necessary for life – on its surface. Water moves. The largest bodies of water, our oceans, move the most. In addition to the motion created by wind and current, the oceans are pulled by the moon as it orbits the earth, bulging out from the earth’s circumference as though reaching for the moon and following along on its orbit. When the sun and moon are in a line with one another, it is a new moon. When the sun and earth are in line with the moon on the other side of the earth, it is a full moon. When the moon is new or full, the tides are higher, because of the added gravitational tug from the sun.

on high sandy beaches, especially in the Jekyll Point area. Check out the flocks that gather along the causeways. At low tide, these birds spread out in the vast fascinating marsh. What can you do at low tide? Why not go look for land birds like our migrating warblers and newly arrived summer resident, The Great Crested Flycatcher. The Orchard Oriole should be arriving any day now. The Tidelands Nature Center on Jekyll Island is a great place to see both. While you are there, take the time to go inside the center where naturalists are available to explain the workings of our tides and their impacts on the circle of coastal life.

Whether Lydia Thompson is talking about birds, banding, or drawing birds, her major focus is to intertwine her bird studies and her art. Now she is pursuing her studies of birds & the art of the intaglio print. Preservation and conservation of bird habitats are her major concern. She is blogging at

Tides are complicated business, and for the best explanation of how they work I would direct you to read one of Taylor Schoettle’s books about the Georgia barrier islands. A naturalist who’s spent his life studying the coast, Taylor does an excellent job of explaining tides with pictures that show the effects of the sun and moon. My point is that tides matter when you go out to watch birds on our beaches and in the marshes.

www.coastalgeorgiabirding-lydia.blogspot.com.

Here along our coast we have semidiurnal tides, which means two high tides and two low tides each day. This gives us two periods to find birds that congregate in high places at high tide. However, high tide at Jekyll Point, the south end beach west of the 4-H Center on Jekyll Island, does not crest at the same time as high tide at the head of the Downing Musgrove Causeway to Jekyll Island. My advice is to get a tide table or visit http://www.saltwatertides.com that can help you find any tide along the East Coast.

Be mindful of the fact that shorebirds are preparing to migrate to their nesting grounds, and so are intensely feeding to double and triple their weight. Give them wide berth so they may rest on the beaches. Also be mindful of the nesting Wilson’s Plovers. They nest

In order to get a good look at shorebirds, as well as elusive yearround saltmarsh residents like the Seaside Sparrow or the Marsh Wren, you need to choose the highest tides in the area. The best time would be the tides around the full or new moons. This is when the birds are forced out of the low marsh. Seaside Sparrows will often sit on top of the marsh grasses or in the Sea Oxide at this high tide. Clapper Rail may pop out of the grass near a salt pan because of high water. The shorebirds concentrate around the salt pans on the causeways and U.S. Highway 17.

The Dish

tonight’s special: A Restaurant of our own by dustin lewis, chef/co-owner of JMac’s island restaurant

Jason Little, co-owner of JMacs. Partner Dustin Lewis is not pictured.

J

ason Little and I come from two very similar backgrounds. We both grew up in the beautiful state of Georgia with loving and supportive families who loved to cook and eat. Just outside of Atlanta, Jason began in high school working part time in restaurants, learning all aspects of the business and growing his passion for the industry. Having a Methodist minister for my father and moving from town to town like an Army brat, I was always involved with my mother and the countless pot luck dinners after church. That’s where my love for Southern comfort food was nurtured. A few years back, Jason and I met at a local restaurant here on St. Simons Island where we both were bartending at the time. We quickly became good friends and soon learned that our interest in someday owning a restaurant was a great desire and dream for us both. Very little did we know that that dream was closer to reality than we realized. About a year ago, Jason approached me with an idea that he had been given by his boss at the time, J. Mac Mason. After months of planning and countless meetings, on July 1, 2012, our dreams became a reality when we became the new partners of JMac’s Island Restaurant. We are so happy to be a part of this community that has welcomed us with open arms and supported us from Day 1. Jason and I are excited to be a part of this long standing restaurant and hope to keep a lot of JMac’s traditions and ambiance the same. Some new changes will be noticed such as a late-night menu on the weekends, a few additions to our dinner menu, and new daily specials that will include fresh local fish and one of our favorites, Braised Lamb Shanks. photos by Joe Loehle

Pour in the dry white wine and cook on high until the wine has reduced. In a separate skillet, salt and pepper your lamb shanks and sear on all sides with a little olive oil. After your vegetables have reduced, remove from heat and add the other half of the vegetables. Place your seared lamb shanks in the Dutch oven with the vegetables and cover with chicken stock. Bring this to a simmer, cover and place in the oven for 1 hour 45 minutes at 300 degrees. Carefully remove the lamb from the pot and set aside. Strain the broth and discard the vegetables. The lamb shanks are ready to serve with your favorite side items.

Par for the Course

New Technology. New Drivers. New game. by andy brown, PGA Professional, golf club at sanctuary cove

My advice to today’s golfers is to make sure your driver is up to date. Newer technology is much better. Here are a few tips on what to look for when upgrading your driver. First, schedule a driver fitting. The correct loft, shaft flex and type of head for your swing is VERY important. Second, look at the new adjustable drivers. These new drivers will accommodate changes in your swing. For example, if you get to the course and start hitting a hook, you can adjust your driver to correct that. You just saved a lot of strokes and the cost of another driver. Third, if you can’t/won’t go get a driver fitting, I recommend trying some demo drivers. Most of the average golfers I see have too stiff of a shaft and not enough loft with their current drivers. When you are trying out the new drivers, pay attention to the ball as it flies down the range. During flight, as the ball begins to descend, it should almost float, not drop out of the sky. Picture yourself watering flowers with a water hose. You want your ball to have that nice arc like the water. If your water is not reaching a certain spot, you can raise the hose a little and the water will travel a little farther. You can also get too much of an angle on the hose and the water will come up short of your target.

I

’m going to age myself here, but I remember playing with wooden drivers that made the sweetest sound hitting the tee shot. You would search months to find the perfect persimmon driver. The grain of the wood, the color of the stain – it all had to look a certain way. McGregor, Hogan and Wood Brothers had the most wanted drivers. Great memories. Now back to the 21st Century. Remember when Taylor Made and Callaway first came out with their metal woods? We thought that was the best thing to happen to golf since the sand wedge. Well, it’s nowhere close to today’s metal woods. With this year’s new crop of drivers – the Titleist 913, Callaway X Hot, and Taylor Made R1 – the game of golf has changed for the better. The new drivers make the tee ball a lot easier. Not only do the harder, lighter metals make the ball go farther but the size (360cc) has made our missed shots more playable.

40

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

Here are a few swing tips for these new drivers. First is ball position. The ball should be no farther back than your left big toe (righthanded golfers). Second, with the new big-headed drivers you need to tee the ball a little higher. At least half of the ball should be above the top of the driver. These new clubs are designed with the sweet spot closer to the top center of the club face. If the ball is in the correct position and you swing the club on plane, you will not put a “dummy” mark on the top of your new driver. Don’t grip the driver too tight. The pressure of your grip should be in your hands and fingers, not in your arms and shoulders. You should be able to swing the club with no tightness in your forearms and shoulders. (This applies to all clubs.) New technology in golf should help us enjoy the game more. If you are just starting, make sure your driver is one of the new larger models and start practicing with it instead of an iron. Most instructors will cringe, but think about it – the easiest club to hit now is the driver. The ball is on a tee in the perfect position. In the words of a well known golfer: “Tee it high and let it fly!” Hopefully these tips will help you. If you need assistance or have questions, contact me or your local PGA Professional.

if mama ain’t happy... by amanda kirkland

B

utcher Day comes around once a year at the farm. Sure, we go here and there to the butcher throughout the year but there is really only one official Butcher Day. On the official Butcher Day, we take all of last year’s steers to the butcher for processing. Occasionally, we have to take older cows as well. This year we took eight steers and one older cow. Usually, Butcher Day is a stressful but exciting day in our household. We all have to head out to the field and corral the cows that we want to take to the butcher into the barn field together. This always requires frustrated looks and some yelling from Josh. This year was surprisingly easy. We managed to get all of the cows in the right field the night before, so the morning of the big day all we had to do was hook up the cattle trailer and load them in. Even that process was tremendously simple this year. When Josh and the boys pulled away, I felt a feeling that I’ve never felt in our five or six years of

Butcher Day. I’m always excited to watch them pull away because that means that the countdown is on until fresh meat in my freezer. This time was different. I felt the first sadness that I’ve ever felt. When Josh pulled away, he pulled with him in that trailer eight young steers and the meanest old mama cow that Glynn County – maybe even Southeast Georgia – has ever seen. Her name was White Face. We don’t name any of our animals. If they come with a name, they can keep it but we never give any of our animals a name. White Face only got a name through her own will. Josh bought our cows more than 10 years ago and she was one of the first ones. She was what every cattle man wants in a mama cow. She bore strong babies and never struggled in labor. Then as the babies got older she became fiercely protective of them. She was the dominant cow and made our 2,000-pound bull look like a cuddly pet. She stood out from the rest of the herd immediately. She earned her name by striking fear in the hearts of each member of the family. Josh would tell people who visited the farm: “Just look out for the white-faced cow.” The kids would tell their friends who came to play on the farm to stay away from White Face, and so it was. White Face made her spot in our family. We’ve known for a while that it was time to take her to the butcher. As a matter of fact, most of the family has been pretty joyous about it. She has kicked at least three of us and charged at all of us. I think most of us were just looking forward to walking through the fields without fear in our hearts. She could not be herded. This became a problem because she was dominant and so as soon as she went the wrong way all of the cows followed right behind her. That made for more than a few long days. I should have been excited about how much easier farm work would be without her around. I honestly never imagined feeling any sadness over losing her. I watch perfectly nice steers go to the butcher all the time with happiness in my heart. Why did it make me sad to watch White Face go? As mean as White Face was, I respected her. She was fierce because she was a good mama. She couldn’t be led where she didn’t want to go. That sounds like any stand-up woman I know. I’ll say that it won’t be easy eating hamburger for a while, but I’ll manage. Amanda Kirkland is a Georgia girl who fell in love with a redneck and had five beautiful redneck children. She spends her days taking care of those five kids, about 25 cows, 100 chickens and a garden that has fed her family for at least three decades.

posture, the pain preventer? photos by Joe Loehle

by carla rozier, DPT, advance Rehab

Improper position during this activity places a great deal of stress on the lower back muscles, and if the demand is too high the stress causes tiny tears in a muscle. This particular back injury is quite painful, and makes it difficult to even move the surrounding area. In addition to the pain, it also can take weeks or months to fully recover. The intervertebral discs act as the cushions between the vertebrae (bones) of the spine. Each disc is comprised of fibrous rings that can bulge, or even rupture when injured. A disc injury in the lower back can cause pain that can radiate down into the buttocks and/or leg. David Richardson, DPT, Jacqueline Pappas Newberry, PTA, and Carla Rozier, DPT

A

s the season for getting back outside to play emerges, a common secondary problem often arises, back pain. In the medical field back pain and related symptoms rank among the second most frequent medical complaints. Disability from low back pain is second only to the common cold as a cause of lost work time, and the single most frequent cause of disability in people under 45 years of age. The question often emerges with these daunting facts, what can be done to prevent it? Posture is the simplest prevention of injury one can participate in on a daily basis. Good posture places the least amount of strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during daily movement, as well as recreational activities. In addition to preventing the spine from becoming flexed in abnormal positions and creating pain, it also decreases abnormal wearing of joint surfaces, which often results in arthritic changes. The muscles and ligaments in the spine can struggle to maintain adequate balance with poor posture, and can lead to fatigue, back pain, headaches, pinched nerves, and a variety of secondary deficiencies. The three common back injuries associated with basic lifting are muscle strain, disc injury, and joint injury. A simple repetitive task, as easy as lifting a golf ball off the green can create injury when done improperly.

44

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

The third common injury often occurs to the joints that connect the bones at the spine. Normally these joints are capable of handling the stresses of lifting. The consistent pressures of improper lifting techniques, even lightweight objects, can irritate these joints and may cause them to become “locked.” What does proper posture look like? In sitting, the back should be straight, shoulders back, even distribution of body weight on hips, and feet flat on the floor. If you are sitting in a chair that rolls and pivots, don’t twist at the waist, turn the entire body as a unit instead. When lifting it is important to remember these key points: Don’t attempt to lift objects greater than 30 pounds, keep your back straight, and bend at the knees and hips. It is imperative you do not bend forward at the waist with your knees straight. Tighten your stomach muscles and lift the object using your leg muscles. Helpful tips for a healthy back and posture include good nutrition and exercises that consist of stretching, core strengthening and walking. If you currently have or have had back pain, physical therapy can help! Advance offers free injury screens and can help you in the management and prevention of future symptoms. We offer a wide variety of treatment techniques that can decrease recovery time, and get you back to life. Vignettes of Absurdity

it’s complicated by bud hearn

Life, that is. Confusion and conflict consume us. Don’t take my word for it. Look around. Cognitive thought has capitulated. We’re in the abyss of digital arcana, home to no human voice. Computers control everything. Mattresses even play music. We’re hopelessly lost. Recently we purchased a wire holder for office files. Ripping the box apart sapped the strength of two stout men. About 2,000 components cascaded to the floor. Directions were in Chinese. A picture yielded the only clue. Flee from anything that advises, “Assembly Required.” Try opening simple packages like batteries. You’ll lacerate yourself in the process. Or try buying an airline ticket from a voice. My friend Ed calls. He’s a lawyer. He whines that the accountant’s numbers don’t add up. He says the Gen Y gangs of MBA grads have gummed up the system. They can’t balance books on napkins anymore, he says. They create enigmatic spread sheets, confounding the over 50 crowd. It’s complicated. My phone rings. It’s the Probate Judge. “We need to talk,” she says. “We have a problem with your finger prints.” Now, hearing a judge say this is akin to the doctor’s office calling and saying, “About your X-rays ….” What’s this about? Here’s the sordid story. I applied for a gun permit. With crime exceeding that of Sodom and Gomorrah, citizens need to be heavily armed. Even pea shooters require a license. I learned this as a child. The kinetic energy of a pea is directly proportionate to the length of the pea shooter and the lungs of the blower. They’re dangerous weapons in the hands of young boys in movie theaters. I go over to discuss the problem. The sign on the courthouse sidewalk warns, “Caution—Uneven.” Justice is still uneven in the legal system. The courthouse is a solemn and imposing structure. Beneath its Corinthian columns one could imagine Aristotle sitting, swinging the scales of justice, simply passing the time of day. He’s not here today, and the scales tilt noticeably to the left. Do you know how many laws are in the Federal Statutes? Nobody does. The Federal Register alone, according to some, numbers 34,844 pages and weighs 340 pounds. There are so many criminal laws that

46

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

it’s easier to match the DNA of a Neanderthal to a monkey than to avoid breaking one law in your lifetime. Things are complicated. Ask the inmates. Justice in Georgia lurks on every corner. The following are actual statutes that still exist: Punishment for people who curse dead bodies and retribution for those who carry ice cream cones in their pockets on Sundays. There are stocks and public humiliation for putting donkeys in bathtubs. Spitting on sidewalks on Sunday is a no-no and incurs months of community service removing bubble gum from sidewalks. Fried chicken must be eaten with both hands or else. Teasing idiots introduces one to handcuffs and ankle shackles, and midnight flogging for tying a giraffe to a telephone pole. And more. After all, this is Georgia. Suspended on the courthouse flag pole are the flags of America and Georgia. Today, the breeze is calm. These symbols of the equal American Dream hang limply, their energy sucked out by the conflicting issues of states’ rights. They resemble worn-out warriors. It’s complicated. Back to my gun permit. I’m told the FBI rejected my finger prints, saying they oddly match those of Richard Nixon. I play along. They re-print me. The judge tells me if the FBI rejects them again, I may be incarcerated and transferred to Quantico, where detainees are blindfolded and subjected to brutal interrogations by the goon squads of Guantanamo. Probate Courts issue gun permits, marriage licenses, settle estates, commit the criminally insane and change names. I consider a name-change to confound my enemies. “No can do,” she says. “The Women’s Anti-Defamation League still harbors a resentment against you.” I remember an obscure politician’s advice: “Friends attrite and enemies accrete.” I let it slide. I ask to withdraw my concealed weapon permit. “Too late,” she says. “Why?” I ask. “It’s complicated,” she says. “You’re ‘in the system’ now. There’s no exit.” I ask if the Probate Court is connected to the IRS. She’s not amused. I zip it and leave. It’s all too much for one day. While driving home I come to a conclusion: Life is not nearly as complicated as we make it. Somewhere out there I hear the Amen Chorus singing … Just breathe!

Inspired Living by Jessica Duncan, Manor & Laine

A

s a designer I’m constantly on the hunt for a spark that ignites new, fresh and bold ideas at the start of every project. Often the lack of inspiration can be attributed to the praise of a busy task or year left behind. Sometimes even the search for inspiration can leave you fatigued and bland. So why not start with Inspired Living in the home. It’s where you begin and end each day. Be inspired in your home. Find peace there and the renewed energy to face the chaos awaiting beyond your threshold each new day. Throw off the notion that you must follow certain rules and just design a life you love, starting with your home. Your home is your signature, your personality – stationary in time. It should reflect who you are and the things you value. Spaces have a way of changing our moods and molding our lives. We collect memories in spaces, not things, and treasure them as we mature. It’s about loving your space and welcoming friends and loved ones to enjoy it, too. For me, 2013 marks a year of Inspired Living, so I resolved to cut the clutter, eliminate the distractions of stuff and get back to what really matters. The design of my home is my reminder of this goal. Interior design is less about having more; it’s really about function, mood and personality. Where to start with a home that doesn’t meet these three principles is often the hardest part, so here are some helpful suggestions to get you started: • Put fresh flowers on the table. Add a pop of color with new pieces or by painting an old piece. • Make sure your furniture and accessories are the right proportions for your room. • Add an unexpected element to the room, like a funky lamp or a painting of a mustache. You’ll find it creates conversation in a room. • Replace an old worn rug with a fresh and neutral sisal. • Update your textiles with playful patterns. • Light a candle and get some good smells going. Smells and memories are completely intertwined. • Love more and worry less!

To attain the look you want, not everything has to change. You can do a little at a time, but choose the space where you spend the most time, so you and your loved ones will enjoy it most. Inspired Living isn’t defined by your home, but I sure think it starts there! photos by Joe Loehle

Proper planning is the key to small business Success by al mckinnon, president, south coast bank and trust

cess of course, but one of the biggest challenges facing new startups is unexpected growth. If your idea catches on quickly and demand for your services takes off, you must have the cash on-hand to support the growth – otherwise you can grow yourself right out of business. All of these questions are critical in determining the viability of your venture.

I

t seems the challenging economic times we’ve been experiencing of late have led to private individuals leaving the employment of others – by choice or necessity – and becoming entrepreneurs working for themselves. If you’ve found yourself contemplating self-employment, know this: It takes proper planning to start a successful small business. In fact, many small business startups will fail in the first two years of operation primarily due to a combination of several factors; a lack of planning, lack of business experience or a lack of necessary capital. It’s not uncommon to see failure follow when a great business idea is without a good implementation plan.

One of the crucial first steps in starting any type of new business is developing a realistic business plan. Being a successful new business requires a review of the marketplace to determine the demand for the product or service you’ll be providing. Is it needed? Who will buy it? Do you have the proper labor force? What’s your experience? Will you have to hire a manager to run the business? What are the barriers for others to enter the market and compete? Will you earn a reasonable return on your investment? What if you grow faster than planned? You want suc-

As a banker, I always recommend that the new Al McKinnon business owner develop a three- to five-year business plan outlining any up-front capital required to cover startup expenses as well as several months of operating expenses. Often it takes three to six months of operations before you will see any cash flow from the business and you will need the capital to bridge that gap. There are several very good resources in our community to help with drafting a sound business plan. The University of Georgia Small Business Center and the Coastal Area District Development Authority are two such organizations, and many of their services are free of charge. With your business plan in hand you are prepared to visit with your banker to discuss your capital needs. At South Coast Bank and Trust, we have money to lend and we want to lend it. We’re preparing for our move to the heart of Downtown Brunswick, where the majority of businesses are small businesses. That’s our bread and butter. We’re building our company on small business and we’re optimistic for a bright future in the Golden Isles.

Rob Nixon’s most indelible movie memory is rooted in that most memorable of movies, The Wizard of Oz. “I remember seeing The Wizard of Oz because my brother took me and I almost got him into a fist fight,” Rob says, laughing at the memory. Rob had tucked his feet into the gap between the folding seat bottom and seat back in front of him and got his toes pinched when an unsuspecting movie-goer opened the chair to sit down. Like many of us, Rob can quote best-loved lines from The Wizard of Oz – and Casablanca and Jaws and thousands of other films – but unlike most of us, Rob can quote a great deal more than just witty oneliners. To wit: A 20-second kissing scene between Jane Fonda and Robert Redford in The Electric Horseman (1979) cost $280,000 to film over 48 takes due to traveling thunderstorms in the area. (Poor Jane.) And how about this fun factoid: Joan Crawford presented her Mildred Pierce (1945) director with a pair of custom shoulder pads after the film wrapped. Her gift was homage to his aversion to her shoulder pads. His dislike of her wardrobe was so intense, in fact, that he opposed casting her in the role which would become her trademark. (Say what you will about Joan Crawford, girlfriend had the chutzpah to match the collosal sets of shoulder pads she wore.)

Of what import is all this motion picture esoterica? Well, what good is an encyclopedic knowledge of batting averages? Some of us love sports while others of us love good stories and all the many ways that humans find to tell them. “I’ve always been a fanatic about movies,” Rob says. “You know how there’s some information you retain and you don’t know why? Movies have always been that way for me.” For that which has not yet lodged itself in his brain, there is Rob’s extensive personal library of books about movies. Research was a lot easier to do when he was living in Atlanta, Rob says, but he makes do, and quite often. Rob is a regular contributor to Turner Classic Movies online (www.tcm.com), where he offers regular synopses and trivia about films the network acquires and airs 24-hours a day on cable television.

Rob Nixon, far left in the Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick. Above, the Ritz Theatre sign lights up the night. Below, Nixon discusses the movie Amarcord with the audience prior to the start.

Rob has also tapped into the common zeitgeist among movie buffs in the Golden Isles with his regular series of motion picture screenings at the Ritz, the latest of which – Cinema Gourmet – is a well-rounded feast for palate, ears and eyes with delish dishes prepared by Kate Buchanan of Indigo Coastal Shanty and served in conjunction with a brief talk and screening of some truly off-the-beaten path but classic films. Rob kicked off the new year with Amarcord by Federico Fellini, a semi-autobiographical-but-not look at small town life in Italy. Rob himself has an appreciation for the world-at-large, having lived in big cities most of his adult life – San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, New York and Atlanta. “I enjoy the good things about a smaller community,” Rob says. “It’s kind of a trade off.” The arts and culture – so important for actor-cum-playwright-cumdirector–cum–film buff – is not as rich, but then again, as programming director for Golden Isles Arts and Humanities, Rob has certainly made it richer in our town. Due largely to the inventiveness of transplants like Rob – who shares a stylish downtown loft apartment with partner Lanny Brewster – Brunswick offers a rich cultural experience that includes stage, screen and even flash mobs. Downtown Brunswick is looking less like our hometown Wall Street and more like our SoHo, perhaps even our Left Bank. It’s becoming a place where bohemians and bankers feel equally at home, where muslin painters’ smocks and gray flannel suits rub elbows in peace and harmony. The first friday of every month finds them wandering the streets munching homemade goodies, listening to homemade music and savoring the hometown flavor. Thursday nights in summer might find them dressed like Pink Ladies or Thunderbirds and singing along to Grease on the Ritz’s big screen, while Christmas finds them enthralled with Mayor Bryan Thompson’s Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Rob found that common thread, the one that made a community. In most cases, movies are the thing. “I think they tell us a little about who we are and where we want to be. They’re like our collective dreams. In a society that’s more fragmented, that doesn’t have the roots we had 100 years go, they give us a common cultural reference.”

Rob Nixon and Kate Buchanan

A few of Rob Nixon’s motion picture bon mots About This is Spinal Tap (1983) he writes: “The real reason This Is Spinal Tap works so well, why it is so funny and at the same time stirs feelings of pity and embarrassment, is that its creators were determined to make it as realistic as possible. The fact that many audiences thought they were seeing a film about a real band is a testament to how well that aim was achieved. “Anyone who has ever seen a “factual” film about rock musicians, or even brief interviews and band profiles, will recognize the elements here: backstage squabbles, power struggles, and petty jealousies; pretentious comments about the music and an overinflated sense of importance; on-stage catastrophes and bungled personal appearance events; the hyper-adolescent sexuality of a bunch of overgrown boys on the loose; and the tendency toward hagiography on the part of those who produce-direct these types of documentaries.” About The Graduate (1967) he writes: “(Director Mike) Nichols said what convinced him he wanted to make The Graduate was one moment in the book, when Ben and Mrs. Robinson are trying to have a conversation and she is reluctant to discuss art. We find out shortly after that art was her major in college, where she met her husband and became pregnant. ‘That tiny moment allowed me to see a Mrs. Robinson I knew very well – a woman who had been one kind of person and had consciously moved away from what she was into something for which she had contempt, a woman who had a very low opinion of herself, who was now almost parodying herself out of anger with herself for having left who she had been,” Nichols told Leonard Probst in an interview for the book Off Camera.” About Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) he writes: “… a black comedy that moved at a breakneck pace and featured characters who were not who they appeared to be: not the timid elderly ladies who slipped lonely old gentlemen elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and cyanide; not their delusional nephew who dug basement graves for their victims thinking he was Teddy Roosevelt constructing the Panama Canal; not the murderer who was a dead ringer for Boris Karloff (played on stage, in a delicious theatrical twist, by Karloff himself); not even the cop on the beat, who fancied himself a playwright, or the one supposedly sane family member, a newlywed who had made a reputation writing diatribes against marriage.”

Cinema Gourmet at The Ritz Theatre, Downtown Brunswick. Drinks and Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Food by Kate Buchanan of Indigo Coastal Shanty; Discussion by Rob Nixon, film historian. Movie at 7:15 p.m. 6:30 p.m. March 14 The Quiet Man (1952). Starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Directed by John Ford. 6:30 p.m. April 11 Play It Again, Sam (1972). Starring Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. Directed by Herbert Ross.

About The Wizard of Oz (1939) he writes: “It is, perhaps, the closest thing we have today to a universal fairy tale. Stand outside when a strong wind kicks up and someone is likely to yell out, ‘Auntie Em! Auntie Em!’ The theme music for Miss Gulch’s demonic bicycle ride or the march of the Wicked Witch’s palace guards come easily to everyone’s lips. A scary situation will often be faced with someone saying, ‘Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!’ And the phrase ‘I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,’ has become part of everyday parlance and even literary reference as an expression of the strange and wonderful encounters in life.”

Beautiful Seclusion: An Intimate Look at Musgrove Plantation By AMY H. Carter | Photogr aphy by Joe Loehle

M

usgrove Plantation is a place where everyone who visits feels at home. President Jimmy Carter did. The late King Hussein I of Jordan did. Tolstoy, Jacqueline Susann and Eugenia Price still do, inhabiting adjacent bookshelves in the Musgrove library, a room they share with framed 19th century lithographs of the Indians of North America and the skins of various reptiles who’ve slithered and stalked the grounds. A pair of framed drawings that pop artist Andy Warhol made of Jimmy Carter and his mother, Miss Lillian, take the eagle’s perch on a balcony overlooking the great room in the Grove House, the heart of a six-cabin complex. They gaze eastward, through the many-mullioned bay window, over the formal garden and across the marsh to the western shores of Little St. Simons and Sea islands. It takes a full six minutes to reach that view, traveling the winding single-lane ribbon of asphalt that separates Musgrove from the rest of the island. Through the palmettos and the pines and the live oaks and the vines you roll, feeling lighter of spirit with each revolution of the wheels. At the end is the complex of houses built in the low-country architectural style that evokes early days on the Georgia Coast; old ironwork, worn brick in that soft grayish red known as “Savannah gray,” weathered cypress and tabby, a mixture of oyster shells, lime and water that was favored by coastal builders from pre-Colonial days. Musgrove is one of two famous coastal estates built in Georgia by Reynolds Tobacco heirs, and the most accessible of the two, even though its doors open to the public just once a year. The time is coming again during the annual Christ Church Tour of Homes March 16. For the 60th time in the history of the tour, Musgrove’s owners will temporarily lift the veil that normally shields their lovely estate from our view.

She fell in love with the area and began acquiring the acreage that would form the Musgrove estate in 1938. She, too, sensed its magic early on, hence her willingness to share it on occasion, a policy that stands to this day. “The Tour of Homes was very important to my Grandmother, mostly because she took such pride in the property, gardens and in particular the maze,” says Nicole Bagley. “Society was so stratified back then that the Tour of Homes was my Grandmother’s opportunity to share Musgrove Plantation with the larger community that would never normally be able to experience the property and surroundings. Sixty years later Musgrove happily and gratefully continues this tradition, carrying on my Grandmother’s legacy. We also feel it is extremely important to give back to the community and raise much needed funds for local programs.” The gates of Musgrove first opened to patrons of the Christ Church Tour its very first year, when it was billed as a tour of gardens only. At the heart of the 483 acres of high ground that comprise Musgrove is that formal garden with its podacarpus maze and symmetrical plantings of azaleas, camellias and live oaks, as well as several pieces of ancient statuary. This was the view that President Jimmy Carter shared with his Cabinet in December 1976, the only time an American President-elect has convened meetings of such import outside of Washington, D.C. “I had met individually with the men and women I wanted to be in my Cabinet, but I hadn’t gotten them together. We hadn’t planned the Inauguration ceremony. We had a need to have an isolated location. I didn’t want to do it in Washington because I was not a part of Washington yet,” President Carter explains during a Feb. 7 telephone interview with Golden Isles Magazine from his home in Plains, Georgia.

no-see-ums bite all the time down there,” President Carter says. President Carter was so taken with Musgrove that he recommended it to King Hussein I of Jordan during a formal visit the Arab leader made to Washington, D.C. King Hussein was distraught over the death of his young wife in a helicopter accident and found comfort in the peace of Musgrove, where he fished and toured adjacent islands, the former president says. Nancy Reynolds Bagley, the daughter of Reynolds Tobacco founder R.J. Reynolds and mother to Smith Bagley, discovered our magical coast while visiting her brother, Richard J. Reynolds Jr., on Sapelo Island.

Much like its namesake, Musgrove Plantation is a bridge between two worlds. The estate is named for Mary Musgrove, the daughter of a Creek Indian and a South Carolina trader who served General James Oglethorpe as a translator in his negotiations with the Creek Nation. Today Musgrove Plantation plays host to several important conferences each year on behalf of various foundations. In particular two of the many Reynolds trusts, the Arca Foundation and the Sapelo Foundation, host meetings on a variety of issues. “My grandmother was a very strong and smart woman,” says Nicole, who lives in

That initial visit to Musgrove, at the invitation of Musgrove’s owner, the late Smith Bagley, was to be the inspiration for many Presidential getaways. “Later, after I became President, I was still attracted to the beauty and isolation and hospitality at Musgrove. There’s good fishing in the front yard, as you know. I would come down to Musgrove just to relax for a day or two, maybe for a long weekend, and go fishing in the coastal streams. Sometimes I would go out deep-sea fishing. Some days they bite, some days they won’t, but the little

Washington, D.C. “She was a humanitarian and believed in taking chances, creating one’s own path whether it was popular or not. This was passed on to my father who had the vision to share Musgrove Plantation’s magnificent seclusion as a place to bring a small handful of decision makers together on pressing issues in an effort to influence public policy. This started with President Jimmy Carter’s pre-inaugural Cabinet meeting and continues to this day with The National Security Archives and Campaign for America’s Future as two organizations, of many, that hold conferences, affectionately referred to as ‘Musgroves.’” Anna Lefer Kuhn, executive director of the Arca Foundation in Washington, says the beautiful seclusion of Musgrove lacks the distractions of other places. “It really allows people to leave behind the day-to-day kind of short-term challenges of a project and really start to tackle some of the bigger questions,” she says. “The environment of Musgrove and the way the conferences are organized gives you structured hours for conversations but also allows you to take advan-

tage of the beautiful environment in more recreational ways with colleagues. During breaks taking a walk or after dinner over a game of pool, work can be substantive.” Phyllis Bowen, executive director of the Sapelo Foundation, says the property’s capacity for just 30 overnight guests fosters a surprising closeness among conference participants. “Its sense of isolation from the normal hustle and bustle of the busy everyday lives of most of the professionals who join us there for conferences creates a comfortable space that stimulates creative, open interaction and productive dialogue, even among people who have never before met. Musgrove seems to bring out the best in the people who visit there,” Phyllis says. While Musgrove has played an important role in history, it has also been the sanctuary for several generations of a generous but surprisingly typical American family. The door jamb between the library and great room bears tic marks noting the growth of generations of Reynolds children going back to the 1960s. The marks start mere inches

from the floor and stop – several columns later – some 6 feet above it. Family photos cover every surface and sprawling sectional sofas upholstered in warm pastels encourage coziness at every turn. “When dinner was at the Grove House we always had the fire crackling in the hearth with the adults talking about social issues of the day and all of the kids playing backgammon, chess, table-tennis and pool,” Nicole Bagley recalls. “Oyster roasts at the pit (with my Dad’s special oyster sauce) were always so serene. Looking over the marsh and listening to the Plantation Supper Singers and the Friendly Stars was such a treat. Not surprisingly, many memories include driving the golf carts around the property. And navigating my grandmother’s maze in the gardens. As a child, Musgrove always made me feel contented and happy.” The Reynolds heirs are building upon Nancy Bagley’s legacy of generosity with Musgrove by opening up the property for greater use by discerning wedding and event clientele. Musgrove is the embodiment of “Southern charm,” a theme popular with brides today. “We have this amazing property that is steeped in history, still in its original and natural state, and draped in old Spanish Oak moss. It truly is a hidden treasure. Musgrove is perfect for the bride that desires true, genuine southern touches and history at a private, elegant retreat that feels like a secret.” Maintaining the “secret” atmosphere is paramount for the Reynolds heirs, who share their estate in select, small but meaningful doses. “The ability to maintain and be a custodian of this pristine area, in a world that often sacrifices these types of sanctuaries for the sake of development is, in a sense, a responsibility that the Reynolds’ hold dear,” Nicole says. “It is important to preserve the history of the islands and this slower way of life for future generations.”

f the Christ Church Tour of beautiful homes and gardens on St. Simons and Sea Island left you feeling green with house envy, take heart; Pantone, arbiters of all things color, says green is the thing in 2013. And it’s so easy being green in the Golden Isles. For example, this dining room table made from re-

claimed wood. Accented by burlap-covered tuft-back chairs, it is pure unintimidating beauty. At Pierce and Parker Interiors on Frederica Road, St. Simons Island. From designer consignments to antiques to brand new, a fresh update for your home is just short drive away to one of the many super-chic shelter shops nearby.

Objets d’art

First it was the kitchen, the heart of the home that became family room/rec room/home eatery all in one. Now le toilette is the room we all crave. With a few special touches – apothecary jars filled with soaps in shades and shapes of robin’s egg blue and pear green, lotions, monogrammed soaps and sweet handstitched linens – et voilé, you have an oasis of luxury at arm’s reach when you need it most.

Never underestimate the power of little things to lift the mood and polish the look of a room. And what better way to buy them than on consignment, where a previous buyer paid the premium and you get the satisfaction of a sweet little knick-knack recycled and given new life. How green can you get? A fabulous emerald green martini pitcher, a soft teal square-base louvred lamp and all sorts of little pretties to spruce up your space.

Soaps, bubble baths, apothecary jars, towel and woven tray-table found at Details/Indigo & Cotton in the Shops at Sea Island, St. Simons Island

Everything Old is New Again Imagine going home at the end of the day and sinking your tired self into this luxurious green sofa. In fact, the glass-top coffee table, overstuffed armchair and even the über-stylish accoutrements are all green, being consigned by their original owners. You can’t beat that at any price. Feeling right at home at Take Too: The Designer Consigner on Gloucester Street, Downtown Brunswick Oh the places you can go with cast-off architectural treasures. A privacy screen made from old shutters, an artful leaded-glass wall-hanging that once formed an elegant window on an old Victorian manse: Decor with a story to tell. Architectural elements available for purchase at Antiques Etc. on Newcastle Street, Downtown Brunswick Everyday objects of old are the art of today, like these beautifully painted dishes arranged on a solid marble-topped accent table with lion’s head finials. Declutter your space, hold a garage sale or place a few items for consignment and invest the proceeds in some quality statement pieces; Namely, the oil-on-canvas interiors of Atlanta artist Karen Lawrence. Avery Catts Brooks By AMY H. Carter | Photography by Joe Loehle

If Avery Catts Brooks needed a motto to sum up her life in one tidy phrase, “all work and no pay” would serve her well. Whether by choice or circumstance, most all that Avery does ends up being a labor of love, not remuneration. It’s a situation that’s only slightly bemusing to this busy wife and mother of three tween and teen girls. “I do things 100 percent when I’m into them,” Avery says, and one thing has always led to another for this enterprising woman. Co-chair of this year’s Christ Church Tour of Homes, Avery finds herself at the pinnacle of a decade-long career of volunteerism for her church. “I feel like I’m just getting started,” she says. “If I can do this, what else can I do?” Survey says: Plenty. An unexpected modeling gig for a local business turned into a video venture for Avery, Coastal Georgia Living, which expands the hyperlocal programming available on Glynn County’s local access channel. When she approached the Glynn County Commission with the suggestion that locally produced tourist-friendly programming be plugged into the times when government meetings and schedules aren’t airing, they gave her permission but no pay to help offset the cost. “My family thinks I’m nuts.” “Another volunteer venture,” Avery says, even as she embarks with all her heart on her mission to fill the down-time on Channel 99 with history, health and fitness, and even coverage of the Frederica Academy football championship game. Her beat is “anything good that’s happening.” Good is a central theme with Avery, whose devotion to the Tour of Homes is less about the homes themselves and more about spreading the wealth to those in need. “It’d be great to be a billionaire and do that on your own” she says of the process of disbursing funds raised to upwards of 30 charitable organizations that benefit from the tour. Since she’s not a billionaire, Avery is happy to be sitting at the table post-tour when the proceeds are toted up and handed out to non-profits concerned with women and children. “The homes are fabulous (but) that’s not my favorite part to be honest,” she says. “For me it’s the giving.” The daughter and wife of attorneys, Avery was an Atlanta debutante and part of Peachtree Street society who has since taken to the “small town” feel of the Golden Isles, where it’s less about who your grandparents are and where the family fortune was made and more about friends and neighbors living and laughing together. “I like how you can really be yourself, which is nice.”

Husband Todd and daughters Kathleen, 17, Lucy, 15, and Rebekah, 10, enjoy the outdoors and tennis and the like, but Avery’s favorite family activity is just sitting around with them and talking – “actually, listening. They are hilarious.” They’re also creative like their Mama. In 2011 Avery put pen to paper and created a children’s book out of a story she’d made up for her girls years ago, “The Itty Bitty Kitty.” Kathleen illustrated the book, which is now offered for sale on Amazon.com. The artistic gene is running strong in the Brooks women. Avery wrote her first play at age nine and has since added two screenplays to the mix. All work and no pay? Actually, the contributions Avery Catts Brooks makes to the Golden Isles are priceless.

David Dantzler’s guitars strike a chord with local musicians

By Cyle Augusta Lewis | Photogr aphy by Joe Loehle

W

hat is there to say about growing up on a farm? Long hours, early mornings, hot days spent toiling in the sun; but a farm is also a hotbed for budding creativity, resourcefulness, a healthy understanding of mechanics and attention to detail. David Dantzler’s interest in building guitars grew naturally out of his youth on a farm where he harvested corn, cotton, wheat, oats and soybeans. “It’s simply part of growing up on a farm. You have to know how things work,” he says. He assembled his first guitar from used parts purchased on Ebay. “I got to a point where I saw all of these guitars I would love to own but couldn’t afford to buy and thought to myself, ‘Maybe I could make one.’” The rest is history. Originally from Santee, S.C., David took an interest in his roommate’s guitar his freshman year at Clemson. Noting this, for Christmas his parents bought him an inexpensive Ibanez acoustic. In the meantime, he had also purchased a 1968 Silvertone for $35. “I always wanted to learn to play,” he says. However, participation in football and baseball took up most of his free time. “I had been around music growing up. Both of my parents sang in church, and sang well,” but much of his musical education came through impromptu jam sessions in friends’ apartments with more accomplished players. After earning a master’s degree in forest resources, David relocated to the Golden Isles, taking a position with the Coastal Regional Commission. “There was a bluegrass circle that met down at the pier on Tuesday nights. I didn’t even take my guitar. I simply went to gauge whether or not I could hold my own,” he says. Impressed with their skill level, he returned the second week with his guitar but never got it out of the case. The guitar came out on his third visit, but he sat outside the circle. On the fourth week, he joined in. That bluegrass circle was the genesis of what would eventually become Palm Coast’s Open-Mic Night. “I was living in Barnes Plantation, which is where I crossed paths with Michele,” now David’s wife. “Michele would come to watch me play at Open Mic on Monday, and on Tuesday I would go see her sing at Elevate, a young adult ministry.” She was ultimately the springboard for David’s

involvement in the St. Simons Community Church praise band. It was there that he grew in his musicianship, and also deepened his faith. What David has learned as a musician he has applied to his love of the craft in building his own guitar. “What I like is that it’s not something just anyone can get. The recycled materials and repurposed things – it gives the instrument a bit of soul.” With the expert advice of friends, and help from online forums, David was on his way. The springboard to building his own came from a forum contest to build a clone of a Fender Telecaster. Finding the wood for the body in an abandoned barn, he used iron parts from a plow and some grain bin flooring, then bought a used neck that needed refinishing. He’s very happy with how it plays. Local musicians Marc Andress of Honey Blue and my husband, Shannon Lewis of Saint Lewis, both play original instruments built by David. “Marc’s was my first commissioned piece – a 6-string lap steel. He gave me free reign. I took a lot of design cues from Gibson’s Les Paul,” David says. David comes alive when sharing the design operation. “Each guitar has its own process and a different outcome – even if they have the same body shape. If I use simply a different wood, it’s a different story. Each one has its own unique sound. I try to look for storied wood – something with history and character. Then I can choose components to manipulate and tailor it to a sound that I like. “I find it especially satisfying that something I’ve made – the guitar is my art – itself creates art. It compounds itself: vessel and instrument.” Creating art that is a vessel for creating art – David’s skills are the culmination of natural talent, upbringing, and time well-spent honing his craft. David can be contacted at DWDantzler@gmail.com and his handcrafted guitars can be perused at www.DantzlerInstruments.com.
