Historical Society’s annual meeting highlights upcoming programs The Coastal Georgia Historical Society announced an exciting year of programs and projects for 2011 at its recent annual meeting. The highlight of the winter/spring calendar is a new Southern literature series featuring four noted authors expert in the genre. Southern Literature: History, Family and a Sense of Place celebrates the endurance, eccentricities, traditions and humor of the region. Featured authors are: •

Dr. Hugh Ruppersburg, an English professor at the University of Georgia, who has written three books on major Southern writers and edited the literature section of the New Georgia Encyclopedia. March 13.

Emory University literature professor, Dr. Sally Wolff-King, whose latest book, Ledgers of History: William Faulkner, An Almost Forgotten Friendship and an Antebellum Diary, reveals a surprising source of Faulkner’s characters and stories. April 10.

Terry Kay, a 2006 inductee into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, who has authored 11 published novels. Three of his novels – To Dance with the White Dog, The Runaway and The Valley of Light – have been produced as Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. May 1.

The series is partially funded by a grant from the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly. All talks are free and open to the public. Favorite Southern refreshments will be served. Also announced at the meeting is the return of the popular Sunday evening concert series by the lighthouse, A Little Light Music. The series kicks off May 15 with Sons of the Beach. Also on the schedule: Island Garage Band, Mason Waters Band, The Stringrays, and Sounds of Motown. At the annual meeting, executive director Sherri Jones unveiled two projects that underscore the professionalism of the Historical Society. First, the society is the only museum in Glynn County accredited by the American Association of Museums. It must seek reaccreditation every 10 years, and after several months of detailed and demanding preparation, this year’s application is nearing completion, Jones reported.

Second, the historical society has made plans to restore the keeper’s dwelling at the lighthouse, where lighthouse keepers and their families lived when the light required hands-on lighting and maintenance. Jones said this is a long-term project expected to take three to four years to complete. As part of the project, the society plans to research and redesign the building’s permanent exhibits. The society has applied to the Georgia Department of Transportation for a Transportation Enhancement grant to provide the funds and will know later in the winter if the funds will be awarded. Also at the annual meeting, Jonathan Raclin took over as president succeeding Cesar Rodriguez. Don Myers was named vice president, Claire Jorgensen was named secretary, and Jon Langford was appointed treasurer. The Coastal Georgia Historical Society, a not-for-profit organization, preserves and maintains facilities including the St. Simons Island Lighthouse and Museum and the Maritime Center at the Historic Coast Guard Station as part of the coastal community’s living history. The society also collects, restores and houses artifacts that reflect the culture and history of Coastal Georgia and promotes knowledge and appreciation of the area’s heritage. For information about the historical society’s programs, or to learn how you can become a member or volunteer, call (912) 638-4666 or visit http://www.saint simonslighthouse.org

The Dish With Flo

The Drive-thru diet by Flo Anderson

D

ieting can really be a drag but it is a huge money maker. I am amazed to see so many products, programs, books, articles, businesses and the like focused on losing weight. I was told two years ago that I was very overweight. I was a Type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides – you know the drill. After squeezing into my size 22 pants in the tiny little dressing room at the doctor’s office, I decided I better take charge and diet – again. I have been on a diet of one kind or another most of my life. Remember Metracal? It was the first powdered diet drink. We college girls drank gallons of it and the weight came off, but you can’t survive on gritty chocolate milk and lettuce, so the weight went back on times two. And so it has gone for decades. Along comes the latest “diet” and I give it a try. The Cabbage Soup Diet, the Egg Diet, the No-Carb Diet, the No-Fat Diet, Vegan, the Hollywood Diet, the Bride’s Diet, the Slim Fast Diet, Weight Watchers, Metabolic, Nutrisystem – I tried them all and they all worked for a while and then I would go back to my old habits and my old weight, plus some. Well, it has taken me 60 years to put on and take off about two tons. I finally came to the conclusion that if I wanted to live for at least another 25 years (long enough to see all of my grandchildren accomplish great things), then I had to listen to the doctors and figure out what would work. First I did my research on diabetes, then high blood pressure and so on and so on. Then I spent a day at the bookstore and read all the diets out there. On my way out, I passed a tower of hot-off-the-press South Beach Diet books, which I had missed on my way into the store. I bought the book and stayed up all night and read it coverto-cover. It really made sense to me, and

I have been an advocate, if not a disciple, ever since. I spent one year living the diet and selling the diet at the 4th of May Café. The diet worked for all who tried it with me, and we did learn some good habits. I learned that I must eat six times a day to control my weight. I learned that I could eat almost anything but very little of it. I learned to work with my bad habits. My biggest is eating in the car. I am a drive-thru junkie. Ihave very few really bad habits, but this one consumes me, so I work with it.

I can do this for two weeks, drop 8 to 10 lbs., and go back to more normal South Beach eating. I have gotten my weight down by 52 lbs. over the past three years. I have turned my health issues around completely. I have tried to break my bad habits but it isn’t working, so I have adjusted them to work with me. You gotta do what you gotta do; just do it in moderation! Flo Anderson took her first restaurant job at the King and Prince Hotel in 1971. She’s been cooking ever since. Her restaurant, the 4th of May Café, endures in the St. Simons Village. Flo is the mother of three and grandmother to seven, all of whom live on St. Simons Island.

Hence my McDonald’s diet. I switched from a large Diet Coke to a large unsweetened tea. When I start out on my morning errands I buy a sausage McMuffin with egg. I immediately get rid of the top half of the English muffin, set aside the egg, and take two bites of the sausage, cheese and bottom bread. This usually gets me to my first stop. I wrap the remaining food and do my errand. I get back in the car and take two more bites of sausage, cheese and bottom bread. On to the next stop. This drags out until I have slowly eaten all the sausage/cheese side and then I move on to the stone cold egg. This is sort of the lunch portion of the diet but I have been nibbling a little all morning long. By 3 p.m. I am starving and out of tea. Back thru the drive-thru for a Filet-o-Fish Sandwich and another large unsweetened tea. I eat nothing else until we go to dinner at the café at 6:30. There I have a big garden salad with blue cheese and ranch dressing and grilled shrimp or chicken or salmon or fish. I will drink only water and I will have a 100 calorie or less pudding snack around 8 p.m. That’s it.

The Nature Connection

tiny clams and flashy shorebirds by Lydia Thompson

T

ake a walk on the beach and listen. Do you hear that crunching sound? Stop and look down at the thousands of tiny shells beneath your feet. These shells form a line about 12 inches wide running the length of the beach as far as you can see. Sandpipers dart in and out of the line, picking at the shells, which are actually the empty valves of Dwarf Surf clams (Mulinia lateralis). There are thousands of them just beneath the sand on the beach. Dwarf surf clams are white to yellowish in color, and only about half-an-inch at their largest. It is hard to imagine that these tiny triangular clams are very important to birds. It would take a lot of them to make a meal but many birds depend on them. Birds like the American Oystercatcher. Oystercatchers are large, flashy shorebirds. Measuring 17 1/2 inches long, they are coal black on their backs and heads and white below. When they fly, there is a white strip down their wings. However, when you look at them through a spotting scope, whoa! Their eyes are bright yellow with crimson rings. However, that is not what draws you to them. No, it is the beautiful red bill.

These scientists formed the American Oystercatcher group. They are trying to understand what this flashy shorebird needs to survive. Scientists in six states are banding oystercatchers with large colored bands imprinted with easy to read numbers. Each state has its own color: Virginia is black; South Carolina is blue; New Jersey is orange; Massachusetts is yellow; North Carolina is green; Georgia is red. There are 10,971 American Oystercatchers wintering in the United States according to a group survey. Thirty-eight pairs next in the Altamaha River Delta in the summer. During the winter, our coast is vital to the survival of this species. The report of the 600 oystercatchers was significant. The counters recorded color bands from all the states. These birds are here because the tiny Dwarf Surf Clam is abundant.

Whether Lydia Thompson is talking about birds, banding, or drawing birds, her major focus is to intertwine her bird studies and her art. Now she is pursuing her studies of birds & the art of the intaglio print. Preservation and conservation of bird habitats are her major concern. She is blogging at www.coastalgeorgiabirding-lydia.blogspot.com.

Have you ever handled an oyster-shucking knife? Well that knife is shaped like an oystercatcher’s bill. It is thin and pointed at the tip, the better to slip it into an oyster as it just opens. The bill flairs a little, and the bird leverages this flair by cramming it into the oyster to prevent it from closing. The base of the oystercatcher’s beak is slightly indented so that when the bird turns its head, pop! The oyster is food. Oystercatchers are spectacular to see, and they’re also abundant on the Georgia Coast. Recently, I received email account of a sighting that had me wondering if I’d read it right – someone counted 600 American Oystercatchers in one place on the Altamaha Delta. At the mouth of the Altamaha River, the river slows down. The fresh-water river hits the salt water on the ocean. The mud settles down here. This is home for Dwarf Surf Clams as well as oysters. They filter the river mud for food. These clams and oysters are why the American Oystercatchers are there. Encompassing Little St. Simons Island, Wolfe and Egg islands and the surrounding area, the Delta has been designated a Global Important Bird Area. The Nongame Conservation section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Division has documented the importance of this area. They are joined by scientists from Massachusetts to Florida, researching how to protect the American Oystercatcher and other shorebirds from extinction.

divine secrets of the garden goddess by amanda kirkland

M

y vast experience with gardening began years ago. My sister and I would make an annual trip for two weeks during the summer to visit our Dad. As my sister and I got older, into our preteen years, my Dad became more and more frustrated with our laziness. One day he had enough. He marched right into the house, turned off our soap opera (in which, I’m pretty sure Nikki and Victor were going to get together and stay together forever but I’ll never know for sure, now) and made us get up and go outside. That began a tradition of him locking us out of the house while he went to work. We had a choice: We could either work in the garden or make friends in the neighborhood, but we were certainly not going to waste the days away in front of the TV any longer.

and The Red Barn both grow seasonal produce that you can pick at set prices per picked bucket. I think strawberries are the next item available to pick, if the frost didn’t get them. Now, if you are going to go to Manor, don’t go in a small car. Get a truck. And don’t just pick for yourself. Pick enough for your family, your neighbors or older ladies at church. Better yet, get one of the older ladies from church to go with you. I promise they will all love you for it. When you go, though, make sure and get enough to preserve, too, but don’t even get me started talking about jarring; we’ll both be here all day. Amanda Kirkland is a Georgia girl who fell in love with a

I remember going out to the garden pulling a few weeds, beginning to perspire in the south Alabama heat, quitting and ending up in the neighbor’s garage eating ice cream sandwiches until my Dad got home from work and we were allowed back in. That sums it up – my entire gardening experience until Josh and I were married. Even after Josh and I were married he would help his father with their family garden but my job only began after the harvest.

redneck and had four beautiful redneck children. She spends her days taking care of those four kids, about 25 cows, 100 chickens and a garden that has fed her family for at least three decades.

Well, family circumstances changed a little and Josh needed more help in the garden. I was very quickly appointed to the position of gardener’s apprentice. To this day I still say Josh has the easy job riding the tractor while we dig, plant, bury and pull. I’ve been in my position for a couple of years now and I’ll tell you that I’m quickly becoming a gardening aficionado. There are two things that are essential to becoming one of those, and this first one is non-negotiable: You absolutely must have a Farmer’s Almanac. This book comes out once a year and specifies which days during that year will be good to plant your garden. The second one is a newspaper called The Market Bulletin, published by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. It is full of everything agricultural in the state. Don’t even start thinking about a garden until you have got both of these things in hand. Now, I’m no fool. I know that everyone doesn’t have a few acres to plant a garden. I’ve got a little bit of info to share with you folks, too – we haven’t grown a tomato worth eating in years. We just don’t have the time to give them the attention they deserve. Thankfully, I have a found a farm about 45 minutes away that will let me come and pick them until I just can’t pick anymore. Actually, there are two farms in Manor, Ga., (about 75 miles west of Brunswick on U.S. Hwy. 84) where you can pick to your heart’s content – Moore Farms Ma rch /Apri l 2 0 1 1

Par for the Course

Chipping and pitching by rick irwin, PGA

T

When my students come to me and ask to learn the fastest way to take 4 or 5 shots off their scores, I always think about “short game” first. Putting, chipping and pitching is where more than 50 percent of the game is played, so it makes sense to start there before going into the full swing. In this article, we will discuss both chipping and pitching, define both and learn how to better perform each shot. Chipping is described as a shot usually played with a Pitching wedge through a 7 iron. The shot could be described as “getting the ball on the ground and letting it roll to the hole.” Therefore, if we are trying to hit the ball low we could describe it as maximum ground time and minimum air time. The basic set-up is a fairly narrow stance with the ball positioned in the middle of the stance. You should stand close to the ball, much like your putting stance, and preset about 60 percent of your weight on your front foot. This might feel like you are leaning into a small up-slope. When we preset our weight on the front foot it does a couple of things; it should make it natural that the hands will move a little forward and increases the chance of a clean strike on the back of the ball. The mistake so often made is trying to help the ball into the air or scooping it. But what usually happens is the player has too much weight on the back foot and will either hit too far behind the ball and will leave it short or blade the shot over the green. This same player will usually have lots of wrist movement, which is part of the scooping or lifting feel.

really a mini golf swing and the club of choice is usually a sand, lob or pitching wedge. Think of this swing as an underhand toss or like pitching horseshoes; a good exercise is to actually practice the toss and see how the ball reacts to different heights of arm swing. What I think you’ll find is that your right hand will stay firm and as you follow through, your weight will finish more over the front foot. The set up is similar to the chip in that presetting a little weight on the front foot helps give a better chance to strike the ball with a descending blow and the club face tends to stay square to the target longer. This will help keep loft on the club for a higher, softer landing shot. Practice the underhand toss for feel and I think your pitch shots will end up closer to the hole. Avoid at all cost the scoop unless you’re at the beach building a sand castle. Rick Irwin is the head golf professional at the Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons Island.

The correctly played shot will have minimal wrist movement and will be more of an arm and shoulder swing with the weight staying on the front foot the entire swing. With the weight on the front foot we somewhat “tilt” our spine towards the target which sets up a descending blow to the ball, not the “scoop” as earlier mentioned and insures better contact with the ball. Practice this with different clubs to see how far the ball rolls with a similar length swing or use just one club and work on developing the feel for the different shots required. Pitching is best described as maximum air time, minimum ground time. So unlike the chip shot where the club head never gets above waist height, the swing is larger, but again the player must avoid the lifting/ scooping feel as we mentioned in chipping. The pitch swing is

Vignettes of Absurdity

Teflon and velcro by bud hearn

S

he asked me to make reservations for four. I did. We show up at seven, me from the gym and three women, bridge addicts, who are intoxicated from the tournament. We sit at a table in the middle of a local bistro. Conversation begins. With three women, conversation always begins. They rehash each and every bridge hand played. They ignore me. I become a Teflon frying pan where sausage sizzles… nothing sticks. My wife says I may want to change tables, find someone who likes to hear bench press and sit-up stats. She says that’s irrelevant to this table. I decide to sit it out and listen, figure I may learn something. They remind me of golfers discussing strokes. Who cares? I’m Teflon. Besides, who wants to stick more boredom into their life? Remember Bobby Fischer, the chess guru? He went crazy. Said he sat alone on park benches, mumbling about chess. When asked about this strange behavior, he began to drool, saying he remembered every move in every game he ever played. That boy needed a squirt of Teflon. I repeat the story, warning these ladies that someday such benches may be their future. Can you guess the collective response? I suddenly become a Velcro strip being ripped from a useless garment. The conversation begins to drift sideways, which with women is a normal occurrence. It stuck on the subject of tossing out the clutter in our lives. Margaret remembers a book by Gail Blanke, Throw Out Fifty Things. They lament as to how stuff just sticks around, from households, to offices to people. Diane says, “We need to become Teflon.” The others agree. Carolyn carries forward the logical sequence, saying, “We need to rip this stuff out.” I suggest they begin with bridge and golf, but I picture my hunting jacket becoming Velcro.

When we exhume our recent past, we find examples of both Teflon and Velcro. Remember ‘The Teflon Don’, John Gotti? And The Gipper, ‘The Teflon President?’ Very little sticks to mobsters and politicians except money. Other notables to whom the term Teflon is ascribed include Tony Blair and Vladimir Putin. I’m now a member of an exclusive cult.

Velcro is an interesting concept. Did you know that David Letterman made cultural history and put Velcro into the national spotlight? He wore a Velcro-covered suit and, with a running start, leapt into the air, hurling himself against a Velcro-strip wall.

He stuck there, hanging from the wall like a dead fly. He had to be ripped off. Because of this, Velcro has now become one of the favorite bar activities in New Zealand. Will Olympic competition be next?

organized on an Excel spread sheet, listing the clothes, costs and depreciated value of each article. She must be a Lutheran. They become animated. They move from room to room, ripping out everything that’s unnecessary. You know where this is heading, right? Right! My imagination goes wild … no more guns, ammo, boots, camo outfits, running shoes, narcissistic photos of myself and all evidence that a man actually lives in the home. I get the distinct feeling that I am a Velcro strip about to be ripped from the premises. Then they begin discussing the disgusting habits of men. I could only think of two. At this point I’m trying to become Teflon. The table discussion has not yet centered on me. But, I know it’s coming. I begin deep breathing exercises to grease up my Teflon. Sticks and stones, you know, a man’s survival mantra. But it’s not working. I endure a few more minutes and ask for the check before I’m assassinated. It arrives. The ladies have a sudden urge to join one another in the ladies room. Have you ever wondered why it takes three to … oh, forget the thought. They finally return and head to the door. I hear a weak, “Thanks” as they depart the restaurant. I shout, “What about the bill?” They become Teflon, disappearing into the darkness. So I sit here, finishing my beer and feeling like Velcro … ripped off. Teflon is a male illusion … we always gets stuck with the check!

Lady Justice

How women came to rule Glynn County law B y Bob D art | photography by Joe Loeh le

26

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

She personifies justice – this blindfolded lady holding a sword in one hand and balancing scales with the other. The ancient Romans called the robed goddess Justina. To the Greeks of yore, she was Themis or Dike. She was Maat to the Egyptians even before the birth of Christ. Centuries later, she still stands silent sentinel in courthouses across America. In the familiar statues of Lady Justice, the important image is not that a woman is depicted but that she is blindfolded, explains Lisa Godbey Wood, chief judge of the federal judicial district that includes Glynn County. This promises that justice will be blind to race, gender, economic circumstances or other characteristics extraneous to the law and facts of the case at hand. “As for gender, I don’t think it plays a role in the qualifications of a judge. The best judges are intelligent, well educated, honest and hardworking. No gender has a monopoly on any of those qualities,” says Judge Wood. “Frankly, I would feel a bit disingenuous implying that being female has held me back or made things more challenging. It hasn’t,” she explains. “A lot of women and men were mentors to me and helped me obtain this position.” Judge Wood is among three women who sit on the bench in Brunswick and dispense justice as part of what has become a transformation of the judiciary across the United States. Among the other female stalwarts in local courthouses are Amanda Williams, chief judge of Superior Court for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, and Debra G. Howes, judge of the Glynn County Magistrate Court.

Throughout America, women now make up 26 percent of all state judiciaries and 22 percent of the federal judiciary according to The American Bench: Judges of the Nation, a report by Forster-Long Inc., publisher for the American Bar. Women now make up 48 percent of all law school graduates and 45 percent of law firm associates, the report found. The situation was starkly different when young law school graduate Amanda Williams entered the Glynn County courthouses in 1977. There were only two other women attorneys in the county and both were in practice with their husbands, recalls Judge Williams. Now, when she presides over a case, Judge Williams says it is not unusual for all the courtroom participants to be women – prosecutor, defense attorney, bailiff, clerks. Indeed, Jackie Johnson is the female district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial District. Here, as across the country, opinions vary over what difference – if any – this increasing feminization of the judiciary is making. Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has declared that a wise, fair female judge would come to the same conclusion on any given case as a wise, fair male judge. However, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told USA Today that being a woman does shape a judge’s opinions. Justice Ginsburg cited a case involving a 13-year-old girl who had been strip-searched at school by authorities on suspicion of hiding some drugs. “They have never been a 13-year-old girl,” Justice Ginsburg says of her male colleagues, several of whom indicated during oral arguments that the search was justifiable.

Judge Lisa Godbey Wood

Lady Justice continued from page 27

In an interview with The New York Times, Judith Kaye, the retired chief judge of New York state, says she struggled with the question for the quarter century that she sat on the bench. “To defend the idea that women come out different on some cases, I just feel it,” Judge Kaye told the Times. “I feel it to the depths of my soul” because a woman’s experiences are “just different.” Sitting in her office at the Glynn County Courthouse, Judge Williams offers a similar opinion. “Being a woman doesn’t make it better” for a judge. “It makes it different,” she says. “Women bring a different perspective.” Judge Williams recalls one of her first cases on the bench “when a man was trying to tell me why he beat his wife.” “It dawned on me that nothing had given him the impression that this defense (that the wife deserved beating) was not appropriate,” the judge says. After her response, the whole courtroom knew differently.

Judge Amanda Williams “A change took place that day,” Judge Williams says. In her probate court, Judge Howes has jurisdiction over wills, administration of estates, the appointment of guardians and the involuntary hospitalization of incapacitated adults and other dependent people. People come to her court after a loved one dies or when a child needs to be taken from an abusive home. “You have to have a lot of compassion in this job because of the issues we handle,” says Judge Howes, who suspects that being a woman does shape her reactions if not her rulings. “In some cases, you may use motherly instincts” – for example, the temporary guardianship of children, she says. But, no matter her personal sympathy, “you always have to do what the law requires you to do.” “It’s frustrating when you want to help people and you can’t,” she says. “I take it home with me, think about it, pray about it. It’s not just something I can leave here.” Judge Wood says she does not know if her gender has had any effect

The sum total of our life experiences is what we all draw upon.” “My judicial philosophy is that I strive to respect the law and those who uphold it and are governed by it,” says Judge Wood. “. . . A Celebration of Strong, Successful

Women in the Golden Isles by amy carter | S tyled by ange l hobby photography by sarah deshaw & Chris moncus

{ } Marilyn Monroe reveled in the womanhood that made her a success with the world at large, and with men in particular. “I don’t mind living in a man’s world as long as I can be a woman in it,” she said.

For all the strides women have made in the 49 years since Marilyn left this earth, it’s still an arduous climb to the top when you’re wearing high heels (not to mention a skirt). And yet, to this day, the best way to be noticed is to look good.

“Dress shabbily, they notice the dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the woman,” said the high priestess of style, Coco Chanel. Dress for success and you’ll find it. Dress to be noticed and chances are, you will be. Then, you hit ‘em with your smarts. Here, dressed by a few of the Golden Isles’ most stylish boutiques, are five smart, talented, funny, charming and unquestionably successful women worth seeing and knowing.

“Anything community-based and local.” Those are the criteria Amy Meadors Broderick, a Realtor by trade, uses to evaluate potential causes to support. As a result, she’s working on behalf of the Auxiliary of Hospice of the Golden Isles, the Brunswick Junior Women’s Club, the Glynn Heart Association and the YWCA.

The colored bound books on Amy Broderick’s desk are from Petite Maison. Her dress and belt are from Yellow Canary. Her necklace was designed by Spice Island Jewels.

“I feel strongly about giving back to my community,” Amy says. “Although there are many worthy organizations out there, I think it’s important to give locally and shop locally. In the current economy, it’s more important than ever to keep it local. Even if we cannot give back monetarily, we can volunteer and campaign for our local non-profits and charitable organizations.” Hospice of the Golden Isles is her cause of choice for the end-of-life care the organization gave to her mother. “After my experience with Hospice of the Golden Isles, it became my mission to support the non-profit community-based Hospice,” Amy says. “I quickly found myself joining the Auxiliary of Hospice of the Golden Isles and have been on the board for two years as the fundraising chairman.” Initially, Amy wanted to focus her efforts on helping to spread the word about Hospice, but the uniquely warm and giving nature of the Golden Isles prompted her to divide her interests and support as many local organizations as possible. “Living and working in such a generous community encourages and inspires me every day to set an example for my children to give back however we can,” she says. Ultimately, her mother’s lessons on life drive Amy’s philanthropy. “The most important things she taught me were to be kind, generous and independent,” Amy says. “She always said, ‘Follow the Golden Rule’ and ‘It’s better to give than to receive.’ I hope I am instilling these qualities in my children by setting an example that I hope they will follow.”

Anna English Messer models a hat and scarf from Tamary’s and boots from St Simons Outfitters in her “secret garden” at The Gallery on Newcastle (also on cover photo).

When her job as a corporate horticulturist withered on the vine of a real estate-fueled recession, Anna not only made lemonade from lemons, she planted a lemon tree to sustain the harvest that is fueling her new business. “Gardening has always been my passion, and it just made sense to keep doing the work I love after being laid off (from the Sea Island Co.),” she says. “So that’s when and how English Gardens came about.” With a style as loose and lovely as her long brown hair, Anna is juggling the demands of wife, artists and businesswoman very elegantly. She’s recently set up shop in the Gallery on Newcastle, where her “secret garden” offers a New Orleans-style oasis in the heart of downtown Brunswick. “When you’re working for a company, you’re doing the work you specialize in while others are doing the business-end things. As my own boss, I have to worry about all aspects of the business: the bookkeeping, marketing and ordering materials as well as the fun, creative side. But being able to do that – the creative things that I’m really passionate about – helps me to get through the other, more mundane tasks of running the business,” Anna says. “Playing in the dirt” has been a passion of Anna’s since she was a child. She grew up helping her father on his peach orchard in the summers and helping her uncle, who is a florist, in his shop.

“When I was going through my undergrad (work) at UGA, working in the trial gardens and growing so many varieties of plants, I realized that this kind of work gave me a sense of fulfilment that I hadn’t experienced with anything else. I just love the satisfaction of seeing a fourinch seedling become a big, beautiful blooming plant,” Anna says. She has her parents to thank both for her love of horticulture and the confidence to pursue that dream. “They always encouraged me to follow my passion,” Anna says. “They instilled in me a strong work ethic, taught me to be a hardworker and not to let obstacles stand in the way of my dreams. I am grateful to them for their love and support, which has made me everything I am today.”

Morgan poses on the soccer fields at Frederica Academy wearing a top from Tibi.

Morgan Brian is outstanding in her field, but she didn’t get there by standing still. Playing since the age of 4, Morgan – now a senior at Frederica Academy – is ranked No. 1 among high school players by Top Drawer Soccer and was named Player of the Year by Parade magazine in 2010. The leading scorer for the Frederica Academy team, Morgan – who also maintains a 3.8 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society – has committed to play for the University of Virginia. Morgan credits her parents, Steve and Vickie Brian, and her coach, Luis Torres, with giving her the confidence – but not the highpressure sell – to be successful. The drive, she says, is all her own. “I hate to fail, and when I can’t do something I will spend hours on trying to get it right,” Morgan says. That drive is innate, say her parents. “To be honest Morgan has always been naturally driven and focused even at a very young age,” Vickie says. “Outside of making sure she was supported with all her commitments we told her to have fun, work hard, do her best, be positive, stay humble, don’t be cliquish, and to honor and trust God with her actions and talent.” Morgan took those lessons to heart.

“I would have to say my mom has inspired me to persevere no matter the circumstance,” Morgan says. “She has always been a strong woman and role model for my sister and I. She has taught me to always be my own person and stand up for what I know is right. My mom has always told me to follow God and keep him first and all else will fall into place. So that’s exactly what I have done.” Not content to rest on her considerable laurels, Morgan’s goal posthigh school is to play in the Under 20 Women’s Cup in Vietnam (having already played championship games in New Zealand and Costa Rica) and to eventually make the Women’s National Team. “My goals in college are to be a big part of the University of Virginia Women’s soccer program and eventually win a National Championship,” she says.

ED accessorizes with bracelets and scarf from Moncriefs while posing at Lover’s Oak.

Her style is distinctive, exuberant and colorful, not likely to be confused with the work of any other artist currently wielding a brush in the Golden Isles. “A lot of artists are inspired by the things they see, beautiful landscapes that they want to capture,” ED says. “I totally suck at that. Seriously, I can muck up a landscape in a way that would make Bob Ross shave a mohawk. I am inspired to make art by the people around me. Not what they look like, but who they are. I like to draw the stories of people’s lives, their personal stuff, romantic stuff, especially if it makes me laugh. Wow! I just realized I’m like a Rom-Com artist. There is a lot of hand -holding, hugging and personal interaction in my art. I love to doodle the canoodle.” Not unexpectedly, ED counts some unconventional artists as her inspiration – Frida Kahlo, R. Crumb and Gary Larson. “I feel like they gave me permission to be the kind of artist that I am.” And what kind of artist is she, exactly? “I call my style of artwork ‘Neurotica.’ I am obsessive-compulsive with marking an entire page. I don’t know when to quit. More is more, especially with some extra more,” she says. ED draws her artwork by hand, creating a black-and-white line drawing that she colors on the computer.

Check in with ED on Facebook at ED Hose Illustration for a chance to win a free print of her work. Each week she posts a query and then chooses one answer to draw. She’s also online at www.edhose.com. ED’s work is on display at Art Downtown in Downtown Brunswick. 40

“The process says a lot about me because I work in layers on the computer, which is also how I dress – in layers.” Spend a few minutes talking with ED and you’ll realize how lucky we all are that she found a way to live on art. “I think to earn a living doing what you love is a goal that most people have,” she says. “Curiously, playing practical jokes and removing people’s splinters are really hard to wrap a business plan around. I have tried a lot of jobs, so some of my inspiration to be an artist is clearly taken from the discovery of things I know I don’t want to do. They are long stories, but I am certain I don’t want to be a stunt pilot or a prison guard. I love to draw. I wake up and I can’t wait to get something on paper. It may not be the living I was hoping for, but it is definitely the life.”

It is not at all surprising that Allyson Garrison was chosen Glynn County’s 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year; she discovered an affinity for the classroom early and still feels it intensely. “My mother encouraged me to go into education many times because she saw the joy I had for school through the years. From a youngster, I always loved school, books, school supplies and learning,” Allyson says. “I loved school so much that once as a young child I was upset about missing a day of school for being sick. In high school I had perfect attendance not only for the privilege to exempt an exam but for my enthusiasm and joy of learning. “Teaching and being a part of a school environment continues to bring me great joy.” Allyson took her first teaching assignment at 21. Since, she’s taught three elementary grades at six schools in four school districts and has found there to be no more rewarding career than imparting to her students a knowledge of not only academic subjects but also the life skills necessary to achieve their dreams.

Allyson Garrison wears a skirt and jacket by Doncaster from Posh on St. Simons Island.

“The children are our future and I want them to be successful,” she says. “After all, they may be caring for me one day and I want to be in excellent hands.” Currently teaching third-grade students at Burroughs-Molette Elementary School, Allyson’s expectations for her students are no different from those she imposes upon herself and her own child: to be the best you can be. Seeing them meet that goal is just as personal, and it’s a victory she credits to group effort. “I would not be where I am today if I had not worked with such wonderful administrators and teachers throughout the course of my career. I have added to my repertoire wonderful, creative sayings and teaching thoughts over the many years I have taught. I did not discover them in a book but from a colleague,” Allyson says. “I look at my colleagues as role models and a wealth of ideas.”

In the

Bedroom by Luke Smith P hotography by Luke Smith & Brooke Roberts

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of women I’ve shot who were happy with the way that they look. If I didn’t have any fingers on that hand, I could still do it. Because I’m not female, I suspect I’ll never understand it. I began the struggle to understand women at 20 years old when I was married, and I can still recall the absurdity a couple of years later when she spent an entire hour one evening looking at herself in the mirror. My man alarm began to go off and I realized that I probably better go in there. Walking in, I put my hand on the small of her back and inquired about the reason she was scrutinizing her face in the mirror. I laughed when she told me that she was getting wrinkles; I mean for goodness sake, she was maybe 23 years old, 24 tops at the time. I asked why she thought she was getting wrinkles (I was picturing her grandmother in my head), and she turned to me with her fingers about half an inch apart at the corner of one of her eyes; for the life of me, I just couldn’t see it. I looked over her shoulder as she traced the margins of a very slight laugh line at the outside of that one eye. It was crazy to me, but it was devastating to her. We had 10 mostly happy years together, and for the duration of our marriage, I always thought she was beautiful and she always thought she was getting old. But I always saw her as beautiful. I still do. It’s just the way I am, and that serves me well as a photographer. Women have a tendency to focus on their flaws rather than recognize that the things that make them different are the things that make them uniquely beautiful. When I meet a client for the first time, I make it a point to see clearly the best things about them, then I ask if there is anything they are sensitive about. Usually their concerns are substantial in their mind, but nowhere near as bad as they think. Even though my only purpose with them involves holding a camera and capturing their “best angles,” my greater purpose is helping them see themselves accurately, as beautiful creatures worthy of being called art. The thing I love most about what I do is that by the time all is said and done, they do love the way they look. That’s the heart of a boudoir photography session.

Boudoir (bdwär, -dwôr) n. A woman’s private sitting room, dressing room, or bedroom. [French, from Old French bouder, to sulk.]

If you’ve never heard about boudoir photography, the image that comes to mind is probably something taboo, and it would be mistaken. Seinfeld fans may remember the memorable episode where George Costanza strips down to his boxers and sexy black socks and assumes the natural position on the couch to his utter humiliation. Just a few weeks ago on Cougar Town, one poor fellow is talked into posing for some sexy professional pictures as a gift for his love interest. These are funny, because they are male subjects, and we can all admit that men trying to look sexy is just, well, funny I guess … . continued on page 51

“It was a woman’s bedroom, actually a boudoir, and no man belonged in it except by invitation.” – Kathleen Winsor, Forever Amber

50

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

In the Bedroom continued from page 47

A boudoir session is a very positive shoot, in a warm and inviting atmosphere, with no negative energy. Sometimes alone, sometimes with friends, the client’s session should be as relaxing and stress free as a couple of hours at a spa. After a professional makeup artist and hairstylist do their work, the photographer takes over. Working through a lingerie wardrobe, a simple knowledge of how to pose corrects most self-perceived flaws, and the adept application of light and shadow does the rest. The results are beautiful and artistically rendered images, at least some of which may be suitable for wall art, depending on your preference for décor. While many brides elect to have a boudoir shoot prior to their wedding as a wedding day gift for their groom, the vast majority of boudoir subjects are middle aged married women simply aware of the effect that children, stress and time have on their bodies. They know that in 25 years, the radiant beauty their husband sees will still be there and loved by him, but it will look different and they want to capture it now while they can. Sometimes they’re motivated by plastic surgery, sometimes by a trying spring fitness regimen that gets them ready for beach season, but there is always an awareness that they are beautiful, and they want to remember those trials they endured to look the way they do now. While a boudoir photography session is more revealing than a family portrait session, the best work doesn’t have to have to involve baring anything more than your soul. The style of photography is sensual or alluring in nature, but only because it focuses on women, and all women are beautiful, sensual and alluring whether they recognize it or not. Because it is such a feel-good thing to participate in, it should be no surprise that this subset of the photography market has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, even in a less than stellar economy.

longer than I had been alive. The woman he loved the most in the world was a subject in a huge wall canvas that to me looked almost surreal in its beauty. She was featured sitting up in a pile of strategically placed white sheets on the bed, as though she had just awakened, except with every hair perfect and better makeup than she wore at any time I had ever seen her. He used her to create art, and to that point in my life, it was the most beautiful image I had ever seen. It wasn’t a nude, though it did imply a lack of self-awareness on her part, and seemed to reveal who she was without standards of modesty, the judgment of in-laws, or the worries of the world. The personification of beauty, it was private and personal. It was boudoir before boudoir was cool. If you’re reading this magazine, you have the benefit of many male and female photographers in this area that have embraced boudoir photography to serve their clients. The typical boudoir photographer can offer albums, small up to wall art size prints, or pretty much anything else you want. Because of the nature of boudoir photography, don’t be surprised if your photographer is a little leery of selling you the digital files, because once those things are out, they’re out, and the only way the photographer can limit that is to not part with them. Also, unless you’re willing to sign the release for advertisements and such, your prints will remain hidden and can remain your secret gift to your husband or yourself, as “boudoir” was meant to be.

Luke Smith is the owner of Savannah-based Lone Pine Photography.

I still remember the very first time I saw a boudoir picture. It was the early 1980s and my uncle had been practicing photography for

Woman to Woman: Thoughts on the Pursuit of a Happy Living by Karen H endrix

“Que Sera Sera….whatever will be, will be. The future’s not ours to see… Que Sera Sera” were the lyrics to a song by Doris Day that I fondly remember my mother singing to me throughout my childhood. Its sentiments left the listener to believe that things “happen” to us and the future is not to ours to be planned. Although I am a firm believer that some things do “happen for a reason” that does not mean that we do not need to plan for and be prepared for our futures at any age. Our dreams change as we walk though our lives. As a young teen I dreamed of replacing Barbara Walters as the next great broadcast journalist. I was a child of two parents who had Master’s level educations. There was no doubt in my mind that I would go to college after high school. In those pre-Hope Scholarship days I gained admission into the University of Georgia. It was the best place, and still is, to go for journalism in the state. Unfortunately the dream of becoming a journalist did not last long. To my young self it seemed a long-shot and too hard of a career to pursue in my good-time college days. Even though my parents had definite career goals themselves and were successful in their fields, I floundered in my plans for my future. In my junior year I found interior design and my passion for trying to make my corner of the world a little nicer began.

nest egg and we made that dream happen 10 years later when we bought Accents on St Simons Island. Owning a retail business can be a roller coaster ride on any given day. On Tuesday you can have great customers, a buzz of excitement in the store where it seems that every home décor item or gift that you chose to buy and display for sale is the coolest thing ever and everyone wants it. Your sales pay your bills and you look forward to finding the next great thing or trend for your inventory. Then on a Thursday it can all change. If anyone does venture into your store at all that day, they are “just looking” or they “don’t need one more thing in my house, but your store is beautiful.” This coupled with thoughts of questioning if and when your customers will ever actually buy something again, wondering if your marketing plan is working, or the worst – “Can I pay the rent this month?” – make being an entrepreneur a scary occupation. The retail roller coaster has developed additional unknown twists and turns with the recent recession. That being said, it is still the best job that I could have dreamed for myself.

Que Sera Sera

Over the years I worked for design firms, product showrooms and individual clients gaining experience and knowledge. While I loved learning about each of the aspects of the business, it was never exactly what I wanted to do in my heart. First and foremost I wanted to be a good wife and mother but I also wanted to be fulfilled as an educated woman. It was not until I worked for a small interior design/home décor and gift boutique in Atlanta that the seed was planted of what I wanted to do with my life. To have my own store seemed unattainable at the time, but my long-term dream quickly grew to be able to have my own store where I could design, order great merchandise and know my customers’ needs. For most, including myself, starting and or buying a retail store seems like an extravagant dream. You need money for rent, salaries, inventory, taxes, etc. Fortunately my husband believed in me, offered up our

I have two daughters and like every mother, I want the best for them. As an adult with many years of life experience, my best words of wisdom to them would be to “Be prepared for whatever life has to offer.” Excel in school. You want to be able to choose your college and not have your choices limited by an average performance in high school. Do the extra credit. Go the extra mile. Spend the time it takes to do a task correctly the first time. Take pride in your work. Always be respectful of your elders, even if you do not always agree with them. You might actually learn something. Be kind. You don’t have to like everyone, but you can be nice to anyone. Therefore in the spirit of being prepared and planning for our futures should we then re-write the words of the old classic Que, Sera, Sera and proclaim that “Que, Sera, Sera, whatever CAN be will be, the future IS ours to see … Que Sera Sera.” Works for me, and I think my mother would approve.

chef’s table: Halyards kitchen is the in place to dine B y Amy H . C arter

The hustle and heat in Dave Snyder’s kitchen lends a surprisingly relaxing ambience to dinner out on a Friday night. While 80-odd patrons enjoy their meals in the romantic darkness of the Halyards dining room on St. Simons Island, the industrial shine of fluorescent light bounces off stainless steel prep surfaces, serving to spotlight the cooking action in the kitchen and putting a reality TV-née-dinner theater spin on – er – well – dinner. There are no shouting matches or muttered expletives, no spectacular fires, no crash-

ing dishes or clashing egos. In fact, the only thing broken was a wine glass that Dave himself set down too close to the edge of a pub-height butcher’s block; it smashed to bits on the tile floor, but the executive chef was coolly unfazed. Perhaps Dave and his culinary cadre were on their best behavior with an audience, or perhaps the organized chaos that unfolds over a span of three hours is just business as usual in his kitchen. Whatever the cause, the chance to witness such poetry in motion is reserved for a select few – 100, to be exact, who drop $95 on “Edible Art,” a cooking-as-art book Dave

has published in collaboration with botanical artist/significant other Hillary Parker. For that price, you get art, recipes, and a special sampling of the master chef’s best served by the man himself. “My thought on food is, you have to eat, and because you have to eat, you might as well eat well,” Dave says. Edible art, indeed. Judith-Eff and Jamie O’Grady were the first book buyers to take advantage of the special kitchen dining offer, and gave the experience rave reviews. Indeed, it was good enough to

{ food & wine }

share. It is through the grace and highly persuasive powers of Miss Judith-Eff (an honest-to-gawd, dyed-in-the-fuh coat Noo Yawkuh) that the Michigan-born Dave and his Jersey girl sweetheart ply us with gourmet to die for (New York strip grilled medium-rare garnished with strips of fresh ginger, for gawd’s sake!) We start with yellowfin tuna tartar and diced avocado followed by a fried shrimp taco, a mini honey glazed lamb chop lollipop with toasted pecan purée, and grouper medallions with roasted butternut squash risotto and sautéed asparagus – all pulled from the restaurant’s menu.

We start with champagne while a good old night of girl talk touches every topic from men to speaking French to the explosive finale of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The topics don’t get much more highbrow than that – and definitely no less lively – as we progress to white wine and finish the evening with a generous glass of red and a staggering array of desserts that simply must be seen and sampled to be believed. Dave hits us with nearly everything pastry chef Kristen Kramer’s got – the milk chocolate turtle bar (“It’s like Ziggy’s in my mouth,” Hillary says of the experience), warm cinnamon ap-

ple crisp, chocolate chip pecan pie, a lemon raspberry mousse dome on shortbread and, the pièce de résistance – a warm profiterole with ice cream and bourbon caramel sauce. When Dave Snyder says he believes in eating well, you’d do well to call him on it.

Staying well is a

daily exercise B y Les l ie Jeter

Being a woman is tough for more reasons than occasionally (and shamefully) trying to hold back tears at the most ridiculous moments. (Yes, I shed a tear or two during “Despicable Me,” the most recent film I watched, and during a Taylor Swift song, and a Liberty Mutual commercial.) So far in my womanhood, I would say the hardest but most rewarding part of being a woman is maintaining health. I am fighting many generations of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and other potentially fatal diseases. Both men and women suffer from these vicious declines in health but in some cases women are at higher risk of disease than men. Eight months ago, I was looking at becoming just another statistic. Since starting an exercise program that has me performing constantly varied functional movements at high intensity, I have become far healthier than I ever thought possible and have even learned to listen to my body, which has helped me discover my Supraventricular Tachycardia, a curable heart defect I was born with but was unable to pinpoint due to an inactive lifestyle. Living with a heart defect was scary, especially considering that heart disease is the leading killer of women. In fact, one in

66

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

every four women will die of heart disease; this is not a statistic to be taken lightly. Another statistic shows that one in eight women will develop breast cancer and one in 35 women will die from it, though this number is gradually decreasing, thanks to preventative measures. A statistic that is unfortunately not decreasing is the number of people who are developing diabetes. One in 12 people have diabetes and nearly 11 percent of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes. As I began working out and became more in tune with my body, I started to entertain the idea of being able to control the future of my health. I could not settle in with the fact I was destined to suffer from diabetes, heart disease and obesity, among other “unavoidable” diseases that have trickled down my family line. I had accepted the fact I was always going to be heavier in weight than some people but I was not ready to accept the fact I was more than likely going to die at an early age from complications I wasn’t even attempting to fight at the time. Thus, my transformation began; nearly two years and 50 pounds have passed and I have yet

to look back. And though my fight began as an attempt to rid myself from all the weight I had unnecessarily been carrying around with me for most of my life, it has evolved into a fight fed by a passion to survive. There are a number of things that cannot be prevented, like my SVT, but learning about your body and the foods you put into it, along with listening to your body, are some of the most responsible things you can do for yourself. For instance, did you know adopting a grain-free/dairy-free diet can in many cases reverse diabetes. And that heart disease is not controlled by simply cutting out fat and salt from your diet. That is why it is imperative for you to decide for yourself the things concerning your health that can be controlled (at least for some time) and the things that cannot be controlled. One thing is certain, however; you will never have control if you aren’t fighting. Two ways to take control of your life are maintaining some sort of daily fitness routine and understanding that nutrition is far more important and has a much bigger impact on your overall health than exercise. After all, a lot of cancers and diseases have

{ health & beauty }

been directly linked to many foods and products we use on a daily basis. Avoiding those items could be a matter of life or death for some. I attribute most of my good health to the nutritional knowledge of my trainer. Still, another component to a woman’s health is her mental health. More women suffer from anxiety, eating, panic and posttraumatic stress disorders, along with phobias and major depression, than men. Your daily life affects your mental state and learning how to cope with and enjoy life to its fullest is key. When I began my research for this article, I set off to find some ways to gain strength in mental health. One of my first stops was Island Therapy and Performance, where I spoke briefly with Ellen Kiley, a massage therapist and yoga instructor who is very passionate about women’s health and wellbeing. When I asked Ellen to briefly explain some things she thought were important pertaining to women’s health, this is what she said: “Regular maintenance of our bodies, hearts and souls is critical to preventing disease. The more we stretch, strengthen, balance, breathe and appreciate our relation-

ships to each other, the healthier we will feel.” To give me a better understanding, she invited me to an evening of yoga. I was amazed at how reviving it was for my mental state. To my advantage, the experience was more personal due to the small size of the class. For the first time in a long time, I allowed my mind to be cleared and concentrated on my breathing or “waves” of peace calming my mind, body and spirit. Between poses, I would allow myself to open my eyes and catch a glimpse of the small studio, where the evening sun was casting its last bit of light through uncovered windows onto a glossy, hardwood floor. The natural light mixed with the small but powerful orange glow of a candle and the blending of soft chants and the energy from just three other people was enough for me to realize how important little moments like these are. It was nice to retreat from my regular routine. Living a longer, fuller life, avoiding most preventable diseases, keeping medical costs down, feeling and looking great, possessing more energy, and keeping in mind the future of your family are just some of the reasons you should sustain a healthy lifestyle.

There are countless ways to get active and take control, as well as to gain knowledge about your personal health, ranging from participating in local 5ks and triathlons (like the Island 2 Island Triathlon on Saturday, May 21), to yearly check-ups and taking action when something doesn’t seem right. Glynn County is filled with professionals whose jobs are to take your health and well-being seriously. So, remembering how it feels to be spontaneous, grab a group of girlfriends and stop by the mall for a movie or a day of shopping, or visit the Island Day Spa for a relaxing day alone and consult your doctor when your body is telling you something is wrong. As for me, I’m going to light some candles, put on my favorite soothing music and utilize that Christmas Snuggie. I say, give in to the Lifetime channel, embrace those tears and who cares if it is too easy to become attached to even a simple little houseplant. For every month you have survived womanhood, you should be celebrating. I am. Leslie Jeter is a resident of the Golden Isles who loves to write and take photographs in her spare time. She also shares a deep passion for fitness and nutrition with her boyfriend.

then, I never imagined returning one day as his colleague. He believed it would happen very early in my career. I miss him every day. I used to talk to him every day,” she says. “Many people have forgotten or were not around at the time, but there was a time when he was not respected by many. He is a reminder that hard work and courage can change many things.” The women all said they like being judges.

A lot of times, people get a coveted job and find that it’s not all it was cracked up to be, Judge Wood says. “This is all it was cracked up to be.” The first female assistant district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, Judge Williams was elected as first female judge on the circuit’s Superior Court in 1991 and is now the first female chief judge. As more and more women enter the legal profession, though, her pioneer status has faded. Now fewer people look at her as a woman first and judge second but rather see her the other way around, Judge Williams suspects. Unlike the other women judges, Judge Howes replaced a female – Bernice Gilder – on the Probate Court. She was elected to the position after Judge Gilder died. She worked in the Probate Court office for eight years after serving 13 years as a deputy clerk in Superior Court. Lola Jamsky has held the position of Superior Court Clerk for a number of years, while Brenda Boone-Cove was sworn in as Clerk of State Court in 2009, giving Lady Justice a firm foothold in the hallowed halls of Glynn County’s courthouses.

Bob Dart retired as a national correspondent in the Washington Bureau of Cox Newspapers. He has moved home to Glynn County where he grew up. His book, a collection of his stories about the South is entitled Downhome: Dispatches from Dixie.

From very early in our relationship, I knew that one day Mark and I would be picking out wedding rings together. I was so excited when we started looking together, but I realized we had very different tastes. I knew I wanted a vintage setting with a matching band, but Mark seemed more interested in a modern design. As simple as it sounds, it was quite difficult to find just the right one. When J Green & Co Jewelers opened in August of 2009, I was anxious to see their selection. The moment I walked in the door, I was given the individual attention and personalized customer service that any girl hopes for when she’s shopping for the most important piece of jewelry she’ll ever own. The associate wasn’t just showing the merchandise. She was genuinely excited for me and wanted to make sure I found just the right ring, even if it meant getting it from another of the J Green & Co Jewelry locations. After that first visit, I knew J Green & Co Jewelers was the type of place that Mark & I wanted to do business. There is such a wide selection at very reasonable prices, and it took several visits for me to narrow it down to just a few options. Each visit I was greeted by name from the same friendly faces who welcomed me in that first day. Mark proposed with a ring that is perfect for me - it’s the antique style I love with a little bit of modern details. Every time I look at my ring I think how special it is to know that it’s a mixture of our two very different styles. When we were married on December 11, 2010, we exchanged beautiful rings which are a daily reminder of the promise we made to each other. After such a great experience working with J Green & Co Jewelers for both our wedding rings, I know we will continue to do business with them for many years to come. I’m hoping to have many Valentine’s Day, birthday, and anniversary presents from J Green & Co Jewelers.
