Split Decision in the Mid-term

New election season sees upturn in student involvement Senior Ashley Teague, who was one of many new first-time voters, might have had a little more perspective than most high school students as results rolled in on midterm election night last Tuesday.

“I have friends who work for candidates that just lost, and just won, and as someone with political aspirations this election definitely affected me more than the average high schooler,” Teague said.

Teague watched and researched through the process of elections and campaigning and was in close communication with friends who had worked in the Senate as pages with her as they prepared for Election Day. “Overall I found the results fairly anti-climactic, there was no big blue or red wave like you’ve been hearing about on the news. I would definitely say the Republicans fared better, especially if you look at the number of seats that flipped to red after Obama won,” Teague said.

On election night, Americans

saw what tends to be a typical gain by the minority party in the House of Representatives while also seeing Republicans gain in the Senate. The gain in the Senate numbers and the fact that there will be a new speaker in the House will affect many aspects in politics for the next two years.

In North Carolina, Republican Mark Meadows will continue to hold his 11th District U.S. House seat. Other local positions have been announced in the county including Democrat Quentin Miller as County Sheriff.

At Roberson, teachers and students alike were able to see the elec-

tion process in real-time.

“A lot of times I get students that say ‘I have no interest in politics, I’m not going into government, not doing anything with public policy.’ Well, I bet 10-to-1 you’re going to enter a field where no matter what, you’re still going to be impacted,” Civics teacher Joshua Lowe said.

Lowe has been holding voter registrations at Roberson for four years now and is very passionate about politics in general after his college experience and involvement with his classes. This year he had 87 students register to vote. He finds it important that each student understands the impact their voice can have in the community.

“The number one thing I always say is ‘always vote,’ but I also want people to know that they should be informed. Don’t limit yourself to one source. Look at all the different outlets, really try to look through credibility.

THE ELEPHANTS: As is typical in most mid-term elections, the party in power (in this case, the Republicans), traditionally lose seats in non-presidental elections.

This year, voter registration is also showing favor to the opposition party. Along with this election, the current Democratic advantage in the party registration is about 12 million voters.

These results will likely affect both students and staff. AP U.S. History teacher Robert Browning has found both positives and negatives in the results. Even though he said he wished it had been different, he believes it “forces a compromise between the executive and legislative branch.”

Voters in North Carolina also weighed in on six constitutional amendments ranging from gubernatorial power to voter ID. And because the requirement for voter ID passed, students in the future will have a different experience at the polls than in previous years.

“The Republicans dominated Senate and gubernatorial races while the Dems won the House. That wasn’t a surprise especially considering that most of the states that had Democratic senators in close races were won by Trump in the presidential election.

This will definitely cause setbacks in the Trump administration though. House will most likely focus on investigating the president, into divided government will make it almost impossible to pass big legislation,” Teague said.

Teague had a connection to many of the senators as a Semester Page in 2017 and was able to watch as many of them were re-elected, or not.

At the national level, the split between

House and Senate will mean more difficult financial obstacles for the Republicans since the House controls budget and funding items. However, the Republicans may now have an easier time approving judicial appoinments after gaining seats in the Senate.

“No matter who was elected a big takeaway is the increasing number of young people voting. People are becoming more politically active, more politically aware, and even if the election isn’t for the president you’re still going to be affected by who is elected,” Teague said.

THE DONKEYS: In multiple surveys conducted in 2018, an average of 41% of Democrats say that they are liberal than conservative in their political leanings.

This year, as in the past, the opposition party (in this case, the Democrats) typically gain decisive victories in the mid-terms. The party did gain in the House, but also lost seats in the Senate, negating the “Blue Wave” that many had hoped would be the outcome.

ESCAPE THE VAPE Vaping epidemic spreads in young adults

“I vaped at first mainly just to do cool tricks. But now it’s like I need to hit something with nicotine at least once a day,” Chad*, a student at Roberson, said.

According to the FDA, almost 10.7 million teenagers are negatively affected by the use of e-cigarettes. This includes the use of and potential addiction to the various types of devices. And because peer pressure remains common among teenagers today, experts are predicting that number to continue to rise.

“I started about a year ago. I saw everyone else getting a Juul and wanted to get myself one so I could see what all the hype was about,” Chad said.

Juul Pods Juul Pods contain the e-liquid used in Juuls. Each pod contains about 59 milligrams of nicotine. This is equal to one pack of cigarettes. A four pack of Juul Pods costs about $15.99.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 38 percent of high schoolers and 13 percent of middle schoolers have tried a vape product as of 2018.

Due to the increase of e-cigarettes amongst teenagers, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared teenage use of e-cigarettes an epidemic on Sept. 12. The FDA gave major companies including Vuse, Blu and JUUL 60 days to find a way to eliminate the use by teenagers or they would face stiff fines and possible other legal action.

The FDA has issued posters to be posted in public high school bathrooms declaring that ‘There’s an epidemic spreading’ to try and curb the use by teenagers.

Despite having to be 18 years old to purchase a vape product, studies show that children as young as 12 are still finding ways to vape. And because vapes are odorless and resemble flash drives, a growing number of students are vaping in schools and even during classes.

“I don’t vape in class, but most people who do just use their shirt sleeves and other things to hide while vaping,” Chad said.

According to CBS News, the company JUUL says they provide flavors that may help adult smokers quit smoking traditional cigarettes. Juul pod flavors from mint, mango, and creme to fruit, cucumber and menthol. The FDA is threatening to ban Juul pod flavors including fruit and mango due to the popularity of teen users which could cause JUUL financial loses.

Vape Wild, a company from Dallas, Texas, sells flavors including vanilla, blue raspberry, white chocolate, strawberry macarons and many other dessert-flavored varieties. Roberson social worker Ami Greene believes these flavors and their packaging intentionally attract teenage users.

Some vape juice flavors even include diacetyl, a chemical linked to lung diseases that can lead to dry cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and lethargy.

“I just wish people wouldn’t vape. My father died of lung cancer from smoking; and people think vaping is better. But it’s not,” Greene said.

Electronic Cigarettes (e-cigarettes) were made

by Hon Lik after his father’s death of lung cancer in 2003. But in just the last two years, e-cigarettes have exploded in popularity, especially in schools and on campuses. JUUL’s sales of e-cigarettes increased by 614 percent between 2016 and 2017, allowing them to become a $16-billion company.

Roberson administrators and counselors want the school to also provide a place for students to get help. Students can talk to counselors or with Greene to form a plan of action. This plan can be as elaborate as getting professional help or having weekly check-ins with the school counselors.

“If they want help, I will work with them to find a resource for vaping. We look in the community for resources like a counselor and we provide information about the effects vaping. We can brainstorm ideas as well and form a plan of action from there,” Green said.

University of North Carolina at Asheville freshman Tommy Watkins believes that vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes.

“For people concerned for their health, vaping does not have anywhere near the amount of bad chemicals in it like carcinogens,” Watkins said.

Experts disagree.

JUUL’s “fruity flavors” of pods, including fruity medley and mango, are considered the most dangerous type of pods by the CDC because they include a carcinogen called acrylonitrile.

Acrylonitrile causes both lung and prostate cancer and as well as many other health risks, including problems in the development of organs, blood formation and reproductive systems.

Recovering from Michael Florida Governor Rick Scott gave an update on recovery efforts for the residents of the state which was hit by a Category 4 hurricane on Oct. 10, 2018. Some communities are still restoring power, and donations and help is still being provided from people around the nation wanting to help replace homes and other belongings.

The attacker, identified as Vladislav Roslyakov, was an 18-year old student who attended the college. Among those killed, 15 were students and 5 were teachers. Roslyakov was found dead at the site of the attack due to a self-inflicted shot to the head.

Wrapping Up This Ban, approved in October 2018 by a 571-53 vote in British parliament is a step in the direction of getting all of the pollution out of the oceans.

The idea of this ban is that by 2025 90% of plastic bottles will be recycled and by 2021 things like plastic straws, cutlery, and cotton swabs would be banned in other nations as well, in order to greatly decrease the pollution that kills so many marine creatures every year.

The graduation project process starts junior year with the letter of propsal. Students pick a topic of intrest and explain to the board what they will do with the project and how they will use it in the future.

Students can start the required practicle experience hours (ten for standard English and 15 for honors English as early as the summer before senior year.

While McLean and his staff do face challenges with food production and students, they still manage to get the work done.

“It’s a really strong staff, and they take care of it,” McLean said.

New cafeteria manager Matthew McLean has been managing food businesses for 35 years. McLean spent his career working at fast food restaurants and convenience stores, and Roberson is the first school he’s worked at.

“I wanted to get out of the fast food, and this is sort of the same scenario but a little bit more organized,” McLean said.

McLean and the rest of his staff must follow guidelines and meet certain criteria for the food they produce at Roberson.

“There are some guidelines, especially when you’re looking at seasoning foods; salt, sugar, stuff like that. We don’t do any extra seasoning. You also have to have a certain amount of grains, you have to have protein, you have to have fruit. So there are guidelines they set for you.

You can be a tad bit creative, but generally, you have to follow the recipe,” McLean said.

McLean, along with the rest of his staff, run the cafeteria throughout the day, getting the food ready for the students that day.

“I get here at six o’clock and work on breakfast from six to seven o’clock. After that, it’s all about prepping whatever the food for the day is. You could have something simple like chicken rings, where you fry them up, or you could have something like spaghetti where you have to brown the meat, cook the noodles, and put all the vegetables in,” McLean said.

As cafeteria manager, McLean works on various parts of keeping the kitchen operating throughout the day.

“Most of my morning, from seven to eight, I usually work on production and paperwork, and eight to 11 is all about producing food and getting ready for lunch. And soon as lunch starts, it’s wide open until 1:30,” McLean said.

While McLean is busy all day getting things in order, he still finds the time during lunch to talk to some students. But McLean doesn’t work the registers, he doesn’t get to know some of the students as well as the other cafeteria workers do.

“You’ve got Judy and Pam, they do the registers.

They do a little more of the interacting with the kids than I do. Just because I say hey to 90 percent of students, but I don’t know anybody in particular like they do,” McLean said.

Besides getting to know the students, McLean faces other challenges, relating more towards the logistics of his job.

“The biggest challenge is trying to figure out how much food to produce. One day I may order 35 pizzas, and have leftovers, some days I’ll order 35 pizzas and I’ll run out 20 kids short or something. That’s the

World language offerings continue to offer variety, opportunities for students to experience other cultures

When junior Meaghan Skelly moved to Japan at a young age, she was not expecting to pick up a new language and be thrown into a completely new culture. When she moved back to North Carolina, the transition was not any easier.

“I lived in Japan for six years when I was younger and I picked up the language there because I was integrated to the school system,” Skelly said.

Her mother wanted her to have the best experience she could have while living in the country, so with no prior knowledge, she started Montessori school.

When she was rising into the first grade her family moved back to the States and Skelly began building a new routine and lifestyle.

“I remember in first grade, my first day at Avery’s Creek (Elementary School), I showed up to my class and I was in a full dress kimono. I was full out walking around thinking I was so cool, I definitely wasn’t,” Skelly said.

Now, as a junior in high school, Skelly is taking Latin with Chris Semper on the Foreign Language Hall at Roberson, where she can be further introduced to other cultures.

“It was interesting (learning Latin), it was very different in a sense that you have to change the endings depending on the subject, verb, direct object or aspect of how it serves in the sentence. In Japanese every word is “one character”, but you can have multiple characters to mean one thing like different ways to say, love, depending on the type of love,” Skelly said.

have characters, and it’s not like a character could mean the letter “A”. A character means a word. It was very new, very complex and I was very eager to learn all of it,” Wenzl said.

Due to classes taken at Roberson, Wenzl is now planning and hoping to incorporate Chinese into a future career.

“I have made sure that every college I have applied to also has a minor in Asian studies. My biggest dream is to go abroad and major in journalism in a foreign country, like China, Malaysia and other places like that,” Wenzl said.

While last year Xiangfen Li, Roberson’s Chinese teacher had to leave, the foreign language hall has now taken in Ling Li, as the new Chinese teacher. Li just recently moved to America to begin teaching the language.

Li has been teaching for about five years and this year is her first in an American school. She has found several difficulties, as well as some new changes.

“I am not a native English speaker so sometimes the language barrier is a tricky thing for me. I try really, really hard to explain what I am going to teach the students; somehow they get it. The best way to help my students understand what I am going to teach is to give them examples

and give them the context, which makes it easier for them to understand,” Li said.

Li was not sure how the students at Roberson would be, not knowing how they would act or work in the classroom. After the start of the school year, Li sees the work students put in while learning a language.

“The students here are so much better than I imagined. Some of my American friends told me that American students are not like Chinese students. We (Chinese students) work and study very hard for college, and these students do too,” Li said.

In addition to Latin and Chinese students there are also Spanish students, at Roberson. Spanish is the most learned language at Roberson and therefore, there is a need for several teachers on the hall to provide for the number of students. Muriel Singer is one of those teachers.

After her first language, English, she began to learn French in high school and would later learn Spanish.

“After I took French, Spanish was just fabulous, even the grammar in Spanish is easier,” Singer said.

While she still enjoys the French language, she found teaching Spanish and its culture to her classes to be a newfound passion.

“It’s the most practical (language to

Singer has been teaching for 38 years, not all being at Roberson or in a foreign language. She has also and continues to teach different ages and grade levels.

“When you teach at middle schools, it’s a lot more hands-on, a lot more singing and a lot more fun; but, when you get in high school, it becomes more serious because it’s for college,” Singer said.

This past school year, Singer started a French club, but it only lasted a semester. This year it isn’t planning to be continued but Singer is mentoring a student on his senior project, in French as something new.

“Immerse yourself and keep an open mind. Be enthusiastic and be ready for anything because it’s just like anything else, it can be fun,” Singer said.

In Town Allison, new leadership look to bring visible change

Principal Nathan Allison and Assistant Principal Ryan Klinger have traded in their dress shoes for a pair of blue Nikes.

“I’m always walking, and they are comfortable,” said Klinger.

For anyone who knows Allison, who is new to Roberson this year, the shoes have become a symbol of one of the elements of his leadership.

“One of the items discussed during my hiring process was the need for tennis shoes,” said Assistant Principal Rebekah Calloway, who is also new to Roberson.

Calloway and Allison, along with Freshman Academy Principal Melissa Frizzel are joining assistant principals Klinger and Tara Lawther at Roberson this year.

“I didn’t realize how bad my feet hurt and how uncomfortable my shoes are until I stood up,” Lawther said.

While many of the new faces have administrative experience, working at Roberson in new roles applies to all of them.

History teacher Brian Feid has worked at Roberson since 1994, and since then has been under nine different principals. He said that having the administrators in the halls daily has been positive for the school.

focused on our classroom, on quality and on instruction. The general atmosphere is one that is more serious,” Feid said.

While students are adjusting to the new leadership style, Allison believes he is still getting a feel for the day-to-day workings of the student body and bringing their new ideas to the table.

“I think it brings in fresh ideas and possibly even a sense of pride because I know that we’re all proud to be here, and I think it will help all of us grow,” Allison said.

Allison was most recently the principal at Martin L. Nesbitt Jr. Discovery Academy and compares the different atmospheres.

“The schools are all uniquely different.

In terms of the makeup of the students, the faculty, as well as the community,” Allison said.

Senior Katherine Anderson said her first impression of Allison has helped her appreciate the changes that have come her way at Roberson.

“I volunteered at the art camp over the summer for little kids so I got meet Mr. Allison then. He came and introduced himself because he knew high schoolers were volunteering, so that was nice. He seems very driven to change things,” Anderson said.

“I don’t like the phone policy or dress code. There also used to be senior privileges; we were allowed out three minutes earlier and they don’t do that anymore,” Guevara said.

Freshman Michael Keen has seen how the current administration at T.C. has more effectively been administered than at any middle school he has attended.

“It’s better than most of the administrations.

People actually get ISS, and don’t just walk out of the classroom and walk back in.” Keen said.

Freshman Alex Spake attended Asheville Christian Academy his eighth-grade year and highlighted the differences in his experiences.

“We have a lot more freedom here. I also like that there is no uniform and it starts later, at ACA you had to be in your seat by 7:55,” Spake said.

Allison and his fellow administrators can be seen cheering at sporting events, art showcases, and other school events within the Roberson community.

“It’s about cheering for the rams as hard as we can, but having good sportsmanship along the way, and it's about representing TC well within the community. That’s faculty, staff, students, you name it. But it’s going to take some time for us to build,” Allison said.

“They brought a lot more discipline to the school and they set a lot of rules and I feel like the school is organized better.”

“I think it’s good that they’re being stricter on tardies. I also think it’s good in some classes that the phones are being put away.

I believe in a lot of classes there is so much content that people need to learn,” she said.

Senior Emily Guevara also agrees that has been shown in the new discipline-focused policies.

“They brought a lot more discipline to the school and they set a lot of rules and I feel like the school is organized better, although there are a lot of disadvantages,” Guevara said.

Although the administration has likely helped lower tardies and discipline students, many students, like Guevara,

The girls’ tennis team has been competitive within the state since its creation, and this year is following suit.

This year, the girl’s tennis team remained undefeated through the regular season, and reached the second round of playoffs. Sophomore Temple Dixon believes that the early preparation created an impressive year.

“I’m super proud of everybody because everyone put in a lot of work at the practices and the matches. It’s really good, and it’s rewarding. Everybody plays well,” Dixon said.

Junior Ava Manley said multiple factors contributed to their streak of victory. Manley has been playing since she was four and is ranked No. 2 on the team. Manley’s presence isn’t the only reason the team has been performing so well this season, the roster is full of other experienced players as well.

“We’ve always had the top good players, but now (the team) is all around good,” Manley said.

Dixon feels similarly about the team’s past and it’s current season.

“We have a deep team, so we have good talent--not in just the top three or four. I think we work really well together. We’re a small team, so we can be good friends and be close,” Dixon said.

Not only is the team small in terms of players, but it also only has one coach. Buzz Cook is the team’s only coach, and has been coaching for Roberson for over a decade.

“This is my 11th year. I’ve been working with tennis since 1984, and I’ve been playing for 49 years. (Roberson) is the first place I’ve coached high school tennis,” Cook said.

Throughout Cook’s career at Roberson, he’s developed his style for coaching the team’s players.

nce, sends three to state “I try to talk to them as much as I can during practice so, during the match, I just give them encouragement. I don’t have to say ‘You need to do this and this.’ I just say ‘Remember what we worked on yesterday,’” Cook said.

Cook has to be brief with his coaching on game days because he is only allowed a short amount of time to talk to his players.

“I only get 90 seconds to talk to them at a time before they start yelling at me to get back off the court,” Cook said.

Even though the girl’s team went undefeated during the regular season this year, Cook still has challenges to face. One of which is getting everyone on the court.

“It’s not like basketball where you’re pulling somebody out you can sub in. In tennis, the person who goes on the court has to finish the match, so it’s hard to get everybody a chance to play,” Cook said.

While it is difficult for Cook to find playing time for everyone, it isn’t due to a shortage of matches. Manley said that they can have up to five matches a week.

“Tennis is a big commitment because we’ve been having so many matches. Sometimes we’ll have a match every single day of the week, which is so hard with the rain,” Manley said.

To get the players through their tough matches, coach Cook said that the team has developed a motto that they keep in mind while they play. “‘Believe, breathe, and battle.’Believe you’re gonna win. If things start getting tough, take a step back, take a deep breath, relax.

Girls’ Tennis

Cross Country The boy’s cross country team had three runners finish top 10 at regionals and placed fourth overall at their state meet. Senior Michael Zapherson, sophomore Josh Draper and freshman Will Soule led Roberson to a first-place finish in the 3A West Regionals. Zapherson placed fourth at state, placing him on the All-State roster. Additionally, the girl’s team, led by senior Ashlyn Blakely and junior Jordan Dalton, finished in the top 10 at regionals to qualify for state as well.

At state, the girls’ team placed ninth overall.

In girl’s tennis, the Lady Rams finished the regular season undefeated at 18-0.

They were 16-0 in conference and brought home the trophy before being knocked out in the second round of the state playoffs by a loss to Marvin Ridge in Charlotte.

The TCR varsity volleyball team put on a show this season, finishing with an overall record of 18-9 and 10-6 in the WMAC. In the second round of the playoffs, the volleyball team was knocked out by cross-town rival and conference champion West Henderson by a final score of 3-1.

Soccer The boy’s soccer team finished the regular season 15-7 with a win against Reynolds on their senior night. However, the Rams were defeated in their first round of playoffs

by Central Cabarrus with a final score of 0-3.

Roberson was led by senior and lead scorer Henry Asbill (18 goals) and junior Jeffery Whitenack with 12 assists.

Football The varsity football team ended the season with a 3-8 record. The boys started the year 0-3, but showed improvement in the middle of the season before having to face the undefeated Rockets on Reynolds’ senior night, losing by a final score of 55-28.

Girls’ Golf The girl’s golf team finished their season with seven, second place finishes. Sophomores Ainsley Hodges ends with a score of 50, and Katy Conner was able to post a team-best score of 47 for nine holes.

here’s new paint on a new tradition, and in typical Roberson-Reynolds fashion, the colors used represent the two-sided match-up that has defined mountain soccer for decades.

This year, Roberson and Reynolds soccer teams introduced the Busbee Bucket, a trophy that is also designed to help out the community as well.

Reynolds and Roberson have been rivals since TC opened in 1962. With similar student bodies and only 10.3 miles separating the two WNC powerhouses, adding a little extra incentive to win to the always evenly matched soccer programs seemed like an easy addition, according to Roberson’s head coach, Joshua Martin.

“Well, I think the rivalry has been going on as long as the two teams have had soccer teams.

We’re good friends off the field, and I’m good friends with the coach. The players are friends, but when we got on the field, it’s like fighting your brother. It means a lot to win, and it’s a big-time rivalry,” Martin said.

Martin recently pursued the idea of a rivalry trophy along with Reynolds’ head coach Patrick Gladys. Former Roberson soccer coach Rob Wilcher and Gladys had discussed the possi-

bility of a trophy a few years ago.

“Coach Wilcher and I, back in the day, had talked about doing a rivalry trophy. Coach Martin was the one to actually take action on it,” Gladys said.

The Busbee Bucket takes it name from a mountain located in Fletcher, simply known as the Busbee Mountain, the main landmark separating the two schools.

During each of the matches of both the boys’ and girls’ seasons, the Busbee Bucket will be passed to the current winner, who will then paint a slat their school colors until all of the segments are covered. The team with the most painted slats will then get to keep that bucket and a new one will be started for as long as the teams play each other.

“We will walk into that locker room and see that trophy, and [the soccer players] get to fight for it every day. I hope that helps bring that competitiveness that they might need every now and then,” Roberson assistant coach Taylor Sluder said.

As an additional element to the trophy, each game the bucket will be used to raise funds for a local charity. The inaugural event benefited the soccer program from two high schools on the east coast, Jacksonville and Swansboro High, which had been affected by Hurricane Florence.

Both teams train with TC’s soccer players during their annual trip at Emerald Isle.

Senior team captain Henry Asbill has competed with players from the coast who are now being affected by the storm. He believes that the idea behind the Busbee Bucket and all its benefits are for a great cause.

Ranking the best of Music Fridays as Wave continues to grow As of this year so far, the GF Media Group has created six playlists that consists of 12 songs, each song is chosen by the creator of that wave and has a specific meaning for each individual producer. As a group of producers, we decided to choose the number one song for each playlist.

“Rolling Stones” magazine named “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers was listed as one of the “Best Songs of the Twenty-First Century,” in 2010, for that we decided to include it to our first wave of the school year, which was released on Oct. 12. During the time we released the wave, “Mr. Brightside” had recently turned 14 years old, making it for some of us we grew up with this song.

“Happy Together” was rejected by many well-known artists, according to “All Music”, but The Turtles, along with us gave it a chance, and it made it to the wave on Oct. 19. Advertising, TV shows, movies, sports anthems and many other productions, all of it is using “Happy Together” as the soundtrack for many people’s lives.

“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” has been covered by many throughout the years, but Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell 1967 was a smash on the charts, after that in 1970 The Supremes brought their own version of it. Frontwoman of The Supremes, Diana Ross, made this song her first solo single and it became her first number one on

the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s triumphs made this wave memorable on Oct. 26.

The Halloween Special was released on a Wednesday Oct. 31, which was an unusual cause for many, but it was accepted greatly from most peers, to get into the spooky spirit. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson has a 14-minute-long music video. The plot has Jackson and actress, Ola Ray, being confronted by zombies. Jackson joins them and commences his famous “Thriller” dance, which we hope got people in the hallways joining Jackson’s voice and dancing along.

The fourth wave was themed as an 80s and 90s disco throwback and kicked off the first wave of November, on second day, but the main song that stuck to us producers is “Play that Funky Music” by Wild Cherry. This song became Wild Cherry’s first and only number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and in 2018 it was certified no. 93 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100 songs.

The new route for the GF Wave music has changed drastically from last year. Anyone at school would notice music every Friday during all class changes. Our goal is always to uplift the people of our school and make them look forward for something cheerful that week. If we are able to put a smile on anyone then our job with the GF Wave is accomplished.

have to work with other people to create this world that’s different,” Mundy said.

Mundy plays Alison who’s a very opinionated character that believes the lead in plays should always rightfully be hers.

“Alison is very loud and kind of obnoxious and I’m more introverted,” Mundy said.

Play practice runs daily through Thursdays and lasts for a few hours, although that will change during tech week where they will go through the whole play several times. Currently, they only work on a few scenes per practice.

For Mundy, the meaning behind acting goes further than just entertaining a crowd and that the emotional connection to your character is very important.

“I think it’s really special to be able to put yourself in other people’s shoes no matter how different they are. It makes me more empathetic and feel for other people,” Mundy said.

Keating believes that creating a world for people to escape to is her favorite part of being an actor in a play.

“My favorite thing is playing people that are really different than me and truly bringing the audience an imaginary world that can almost feel real if you do it right,” Keating said.

by EMMA HODES Turning on the lights in the Richard E. Greene theatre was nothing new to director Ryan Ledwig. Getting to know the new faces around was like starting from scratch.

After taking a few years off from teaching theatre and directing plays, Ryan Ledwig said that he is excited to be back at the school and is ready to work with students he’s never taught before.

“I taught here for eight years and then I did not teach theatre for four, so none of these students have worked with me before,” Ledwig said.

But Ledwig said that the decision to start his back by thinking of the students first was an easy one. This year’s fall play, “The Audition,” is a one-act show that runs only 30 minutes long and has no set. The plot is simply about a group of high school students auditioning for a play.

“It’s set in high school so it’s something that most of the actors obviously have experience with. I also wanted to a do a play that would build trust among the actors and me since I don’t know most of them very well,” Ledwig said.

The meaning behind the play can be interpreted in different ways, according to Ledwig. The play shows how actors prepare for a show behind the scenes.

“I would say there are many different messages. It helps to show the backstage lives of the actors is never what it seems. People from different backgrounds and experience levels can all come together for a single purpose,” Ledwig said.

He also added that the stress of acting is a part of what makes the play so rewarding. The work that goes into it is worth it when the show finally goes on.

“I love the stressed out, tired, exhaustion right before a show and then the payoff of getting to watch them perform,” he said.

Junior Baleigh Keating has performed in three productions in her high school career. She explains the differences between the previous director Sarah Leary and Ledwig.

“Our previous director was very laid back, and it did kind of stress me out a little bit. But Mr. Ledwig is very on top of things. It’s just style preference, and they’re very different, but I love both of their styles,” Keating said.

Keating did not receive a traditional role in the play and instead was given the opportunity to create her own character.

“I actually developed my own character and her name is Ally. She’s the new girl in town, a little on the quieter side. But she’s very opinionated and determined,” Keating said.

When Keating was creating her character, she made sure it was very different from her actual personality. She feels this is important to learn to play different personalities than your own.

“She’s kind of judgmental and isn’t afraid to tell people what they need to fix about themselves. I’m very much not like that,” Keating said.

Keating believes that in working in theatre, you not only learn how to act in an imaginary world but also the real world.

“I think you learn a lot of people skills and skills you can use in the outside world whether you’re acting or not,” she said.

Junior Jordan Mundy agrees with Keating about learning to work with different people in the world of acting.

“It’s really fun because a lot of times, you’re not by yourself and you

Students look at which sex is more heavily affected by social pressures

e’ve all heard it before. This is the generation of social media.

The pressure is on and expectations are high, especially for young women, to conform to the harsh mold that social media platforms have created.

Instagram pages like World Star constantly subject its 20 million followers to the sexualization and objectification of young women. This page, in particular, isn’t limited to posts of women, but the way they are portrayed in comparison to men is noticeably different.

World Star’s posts regarding men are generally more focused on highlighting funny moments, pranks and impressive fitness videos whereas the posts focused on women tend to highlight videos or photographs regarding their bodies.

People, specifically younger girls, sometimes find themselves lost in the whirlwind of social media and forget that the content that these celebrities or models post is exactly what they want you to see. Young girls attempting to reach these standards can easily become distraught when they are unable to attain this unrealistic image.

The people that others strive to resemble in posts, style or life, usually leave out the “not-so-desirable” aspects of their life; leaving the essence of perfection behind. With the large number of everyday posts from celebrities, models and public figures, it can be hard to stay out of the mindset of “this is how I should look” or “this is how I should act.” I think it’s easy to forget that you don’t have to look or act a certain way to obtain this recognition or approval that too many people in our generation crave.

Scientifically, women tend to be more empathetic and emotionally connected where men tend to be able to compartmentalize their feelings. Generally speaking, this allows young women to be more vulnerable to the pressures that social media puts on its users.

Of course, men are subjected to their own sort of social pressures that women do not necessarily have. These could include media outlets pressuring men to fit the mold to what they define as “masculine.” There can be lots of pressure to be the hero of a scenario; if not the hero, perhaps just in control of the situation. Similar to women, men may also feel pressure to keep up a certain body image.

It isn’t fair to say that either men or women do not face social pressures, because they both do. Just in different ways.

ost would agree that women face strong social pressures and sometimes threatening behavior in their everyday lives, but issues with the cultural expectations of men shouldn’t be ignored. Although women are more commonly sexualized, men deal with pressures that are often overlooked.

The reality is that both sexes face their own sets of rules and generalizations. From quick conversations with fellow students, it’s clear that most people are focused primarily on the struggles of women, which granted, is something worth acknowledging.

However, it can be easy to overlook those pressures facing guys on a daily basis.

Most men today are focused on marking checkboxes in order to fulfill their societal role. Although many may argue that men have been on the better side of things for the majority of history, there have always been high standards and critical judgments for everyone in our culture. And while women are offered a safe environment to express their troubles, men aren’t able to voice their insecurities or problems without ridicule. If a guy complained about being praised exclusively for athletic achievements, like a woman might for her physical appearance, he would likely be received with hostility.

The same applies to other situations whether it’s body, masculinity or intelligence. If a man is insecure, in question of how to act or skeptical of how he is treated, he can’t voice this feeling without being attacked for lack of sensitivity to women, because in the present day, it is a common belief that only women deal with problems and hostility such as this. At the very least, their issues take priority, and are viewed as more important.

Again, although women face undeniable prejudice and challenges, men have opposite but often equitable adversity. Even with the progressive state of life in our country today, where the 50s is an increasingly distant dream, remnants of older expectations still exist.

Men are taught certain behaviors and tastes that fit the acceptable mold from a very early age, and they aren’t beyond personal image and expectations like many people think. Their appearance, for example, really matters, just not necessarily in the same way as it would for a woman. Even their mannerisms and overall personality are critically judged in all aspects.

Maybe it’s important to recognize that everyone struggles with societal presumptions of who they’re supposed to be, and how they’re supposed to act. Everyone is treated with varying degrees of disrespect or mistreatment. Instead of making a competition out of it or prioritizing the needs of a particular group, people could focus on the unified goal of changing these templates. All genders and sexes could bring light to their struggles with mutual respect and care, and overcome any conflict or, in extreme cases, oppression.

Hello, from Chile everyone. That’s right, from Chile! This fall I have embarked on an amazing journey abroad.

Thanks to the internet and my trusty keyboard, I am able to take you along for the ride. So, without further ado, let me tell you about the amazing excursion I began a few, short weeks ago.

As of Aug. 30, I have been in Santiago, Chile. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I knew I was in for a major cultural shock. Over the past couple weeks, I have been in constant “compare and contrast” mode.

While Chile certainly possesses similarities to America, the differences do not go unnoticed. For example, air conditioning and heat ventilation are not common. The same goes for having a dishwasher and a dryer for clothes. Trying to understand the currency rate has probably been the biggest shock.

For instance, 10,000 pesos is approximately 15.00 U.S. dollars. It was confusing at first, but I understand it a lot better now.

My host family is the absolute best.

When my host mom, Marcela was younger she was an exchange student with my dad’s family in New York. As a result, we have continued to stay close friends.

We like to joke and say, “She’s returning the favor thirty-five years later.” Marcela has an eight-year-old boy named Francisco.

While Francisco and I do have a language barrier, our communication consistently gets better every day. Within the months I am here, I have enrolled myself into Spanish classes five time a week. I hope I will return to the States fluent. However, learning Chilean Spanish is much more difficult than Spain Spanish.

Chileans talk much faster and the slang they use is incredibly different, but I am up for the challenge.

The Spanish school I take my classes from offers touristic activities every afternoon. Some of these activities include city tours, museums, famous lookouts, etc.

Being that Chileans are celebrating their Independence Day, I decided it would be a great idea to learn the national dance called Coeca. In the end the dance was not as difficult as I imagined and was actually super fun. I am looking forward to learning how to salsa within the weeks to come. On top of having afternoon adventures, the school also has weekend excursions to different places around the country.

About two weeks ago, I went to Valparaiso, which is located on the coast. The city is known for its colorful buildings and incredible street art. It was extra special for me because it was my first time ever seeing the Pacific!

Over the months to come, I can’t wait to take you along this journey with me. While I could go on and on reminiscing about the adventures I have already had, I don’t want to overload your brain. I hope you enjoyed the first addition of the GF Abroad blog. Until next time, adios!
