Discover the dramatic baroque gardens and new pavilion The Orangery at Gl. Holtegaard. This temporary building, designed by three young architects, is a new interpretation of one of the most iconic buildings of the Baroque era, namely the Church San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in Rome by architect Francesco Borromini (15991667). In The Orangery, the Baroque era meets present day recreation in an innovative, vibrant design forging a highly original link between the history and visuality of the Baroque era and the industrialised materials of our present age. If you have more time, you can experience the Art Deco exhibition Cool Modern, which opens 21 August. (glholtegaard.dk) 2. ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE HUNT IN COPENHAGEN

The Danish Architecture Centre (DAC) is the place to visit if you are into architecture, urban development and innovation. Located in Christianshavn in an old warehouse, DAC offers a great range of exhibitions and events. Join one of DAC’s guided Sunday Walks to old and new architectural treasures in and around Copenhagen either by foot, bicycle or boat. The bicycle tour takes you to Nordhavn - a new city district and the greatest urban development project of Scandinavia, while the harbour tour goes to the Copenhagen Opera House and Sydhavnen, focusing on the city areas of harbour and bridges. If you are into internationally acclaimed architecture, join the tour by foot around the new city area of Ørestad exploring cutting-edge urban developments including state of the art sustainable solutions. (dac.dk). 3. AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECTURE IN ØRESTAD

If you want to experience examples of some of the most stunning modern architecture of our times, designed by the internationally acclaimed Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), you should visit Ørestad. Here the prestigious VM Mountain (2008) stands like a silver mountain, above the surrounding flat land, with its eleven floor high aluminium façade. Having won the title of 6

The Black Diamond - just a stroll from Christiansborg Palace - is definitely worth a visit for its great architecture and exhibitions. This new addition to The Royal Library has become one of the trademarks of Copenhagen with its 2.500 square meter façade made of shiny black granite from Zimbabwe. Promenade in the great halls of the library or visit the exhibition Treasures of the Royal Library staged by Russian artist Andrey Bartenev. It is an exclusive opportunity to get an insight into Gutenberg’s bible, the notes of Kierkegaard and diaries of Hans Christian Andersen. Relax and enjoy the view by the waterfront in one of the comfy beach chairs at Café Øieblikket. (kb.dk). 5. MODERN LIVING AND DANISH DESIGN

Illums Bolighus is Copenhagen’s flagship department store of modern living, contemporary design and furnishing. Located in the heart of Copenhagen at Amagertorv, here you can find the iconic lamps designed by Poul Henningsen and the many famous armchair designs created by Danish designers such as Børge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. It is also the place to find Danish design accessories and interior decoration for your home. –Nikolaj Hübbe

Buildings of Work and Pleasure Having spent more than 15 years as a dancer with the New York City Ballet, artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet Nikolaj Hübbe is no stranger to the arts. Regularly visiting museums for inspiration for new ballet productions, Hübbe considers being dragged through the Catholic churches of Europe during the summer holidays of his childhood as his formal introduction to the world of museums. Interviewed by Fanan Imad Photographed by Hein Photography I love going to museums, I find it extremely inspiring and invigorating – almost therapeutic. I love finding inspiration in museums, especially when I’ve just begun working on a new ballet; taking the first hesitant steps, going to the first scenography meetings and when the premiere of the production is still far off in the future. Dance is an incredibly visual art form so in many instances an exhibition or a certain artist can be very inspiring. Whether you, later on, end up on the same wavelength or visual genre or expression is irrelevant and unimportant to me. It’s the fact that an exhibition or a particular artist can stimulate your own creative ideas, which I find so important at the very beginning of the creative 8

process. To me, museums can be many things – even historical buildings or works of architecture that speak of a country’s history, politics and culture. Today I love going to museums when I’m on vacation and just trudging around. As a kid, I was dragged along to all kinds of things, especially by my paternal grandparents. When we went on our summer holidays in Europe, we absolutely had to see the Catholic churches. That was just something we did. We’ve been to all the German, Spanish, French and Italian Catholic churches in existence! They weren’t museums as such but to me they kind of were. When you’re walking around in a Southern European city in temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius, it’s nice to seek refuge inside a large, cool church! Some of these churches were more museum-like than others because of the architecture or the church paintings and church art, whether it was Marc Chagall’s church windows or the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp designed by Le Corbusier. Of course you can ask the question, are these churches in fact museums? Well, they’re not museums in the common, curated sense, but they’re a cultural testimony to the history of the country and the region. So in a way they were my introduction to museums. I also visited museums regularly with my parents when I was young. Of all the museums we’d go to, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen is my absolute favourite! The architectural expression, the appearance of the building from outside, the location of the museum, and when you enter into the building the whole dramaturgy of the experience is remarkable. It’s incredibly beautiful. There’s such a sense of calm. Walking around inside the museum feels almost purifying to me. The magnificent entrance hall and the inner garden – you virtually feel like Caesar or an emperor stepping into it, it’s so grand and stunning. It really appeals to my sense of theatricality! A couple of years ago, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London had a fantastic exhibition about the Ballets Russes, the dance company founded by Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev. It was an extraordinary exhibition, underlining how revolutionary the Ballet Russes were in their work. There was a gigantic wall, at the exhibition, where they had hung up an original backdrop from The Firebird by Stravinsky.

NIKOLAJ HÜBBE BORN 1967 1992-2008 DANCER WITH THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET 2008- ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE ROYAL DANISH BALLET

When you walked up in front of it, it felt almost like you were on stage at the premiere of the ballet! It was fantastic. They had also recreated a rehearsal room complete with ballet barres, chairs and mannequins serving as famous ballet dancers such as Tamara Karsavina, Vaslav Nijinsky and so on. Walking through this room, there were video clips projected onto small screens showing these dancers rehearsing with the likes of Picasso and Stravinsky! There’s very little footage in existence from that time, but they had gathered all of it in this room, which was extraordinary. The Ballets Russes had a remarkable influence on ballet and art history, and the curating of the exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum was exceptional. I think I spent the whole day there, walking around. I saw the entire exhibition and then I did it all over again twice! If I had to invent a museum that wasn’t already in existence, it would be a dance museum here in Copenhagen, since Denmark is such a dance nation. Not just covering ballet history, but all of Danish dance history. From Danish folk dance over popular TV-shows to Danish Dance Theatre – there are plenty of things to choose from. There would be exhibitions with artists that have painted, sculpted, photographed or in other ways creatively engaged with the subject of dance and the dancer. All kinds of great artists would fit into this category – Picasso, Degas, Matisse, for example. Throughout history, visual art has always had a penchant for movement and dance.

If you’re also into churches (/church spotting), check out The Cathedral Museum and admire the stunning architecture of Vor Frue Kirke, the cathedral of Copenhagen. If the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek sounds like something right up your alley, Thorvaldsen’s Museum would also be worth a visit. Thorvaldsen’s Museum is Denmark’s oldest museum, having opened its doors for the first time in 1848. If the Theatre Museum at the Court Theatre sounds like something for you, maybe a visit to Designmuseum Danmark, which showcases Danish and international design and crafts, might be tempting. 10

Personally, I’ve always liked the guided tours at Visit Carlsberg, which end with a tasting of their latest special brew. It was more fun back in the day when the guided tours were free and the beer flowed freely, but it’s still worth a visit. Afterwards, go to one of the microbrewery Mikkeller’s bars and get a taste of the Danish microbrewing revolution.

Copenhagen Cable Park is a cool place to hang out during the summer. It’s located out on the island of Amager, so bringing a bike is advisable. Rent a bike at a bicycle shop, it’s easy and cheap. The cable park is for open-air activities and water sports. You can go wakeboarding or just hang out at the café and watch others have a go, and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

JIYAN, 29 BUSINESS DEVELOPER

The Copenhagen district of Nørrebro is unique. Especially Blågårdsgade, a street where people from near and far meet over a glass of beer and chat about the meaning of life. To me, that’s what Copenhagen is all about – a city of authenticity, and quality.

CELEBRATING THE FREEDOM TO LOVE

Copenhagen Pride. Photo: Anders jung

A festive celebration of diversity and civil rights, every year in August, the LGBT festival Copenhagen Pride takes over the city, attracting thousands of locals as well as visitors from all over the world. Denmark was the first nation in the world to legalize same-sex domestic partnerships, not least due to the long and hard fight put up by Danish gay activists. Among these we find Danish activist Axel Axgil who, with his partner, became the first same-sex civil union in the world.

Written by Alexis Kunsak On October 1 1989, the international media converged on City Hall in Copenhagen with boom mikes, cameras and interpreters. Amidst a crowd of hundreds of well-wishers throwing rice and confetti, eleven gay couples celebrated their civil unions simultaneously. Denmark had just become the first country in the world to legalise same-sex partnerships after years of lobbying by many advocates, including one devoted couple in particular: Axel and Eigil Axgil. WALLFLOWERS WAITING TO BLOOM

Denmark’s equivalent to Harvey Milk was born Axel Lundahl-Madsen in BrÌndekilde, a tiny town west of Odense on Funen, in 1915. In an interview, quoted in British newspaper The

Independent in 2011, he recalled a youth spent looking for love in dancehalls in Odense. “Most of the men came to find a girl. But I discovered that if you waited, there was always someone left behind,” said Axel. “You introduced yourself, talked and sometimes went home with them.” In 1948 Axel and Eigil (born Eigil Eskildsen), together with several of their friends, founded Denmark’s first gay rights organisation, Forbundet af 1948 (Association of 1948), the forerunner of LGBT Denmark today. By 1951 memberships had grown to 1.339 people and there were branches in Sweden and Norway. The couple launched Vennen (the friend), a magazine for supporters of their cause. LEGAL BUT FROWNED UPON

“When I came out, I lost my job as a bookkeeper. And my landlord kicked me out of my apartment,” Axel explained in an interview with Time magazine in 2009. In 1948, homosexual relationships between adults over the age of 18 had already been permitted in Denmark for 15 years (in stark contrast to Britain, for example, where it was illegal until 1967, and even then only between over-21s). Before 1933, the punishment for “omgængelse mod nature” (intercourse against nature) was labour in a correctional institution. In the 1950s, both Axel and Eigil were sentenced to short prison terms on pornography charges for running a gay modelling agency that sold

pictures of naked men – a criminal record that unfortunately led to the Municipality of Copenhagen reversing a decision to name a square after Axel in 2013. While in prison, they meshed their first names into the shared surname Axgil as a public show of defiance. Their portmanteau surname became a show of commitment to each other and to the future of gay rights. THE DARWIN OF SEXOLOGISTS

In their 1985 book Homofile kampår (homophile struggle), Axel Axgil and Helmer Fogedgaard, another founding member of the Forbundet af 1948, describe the events that prompted them to begin their long struggle to attain the rights of other citizens. “The most meaningful thing that happened in advance of the founding of the homophile organisations in Scandinavia, was the release of Professor Alfred Kinsey’s report on men’s sexual habits, which came out in the USA,” recalled the pair. The opinion was backed up by Knut Jokker, the editor of the daily paper of the Social Democratic Party in Copenhagen. In the newspaper he stated that Kinsey’s book “contained more dynamite than any other work since Darwin’s The Origin of the Species.” “Ask an American what he thinks about the homosexual problem in the United States and he will awkwardly stammer that he has no idea that such a problem even existed in America,” Jokker wrote. “But the cold numbers in Kinsey’s report show that no less than 27 percent of young and unmarried men practice homosexuality to some degree, and among unmarried men between 36 and 40 years old, 39 percent are homosexual.” Though reporters and editors of the time were equally sceptical that these figures could in any way be applicable in Denmark, Jokker did acknowledge the possibility of a more open future. “The report could get us to realise the necessity of a moral society, one that is less based on judgement and wishful-thinking than on truth,” he ventured. “Moral concepts and laws can be revised, but nature forces us – even if conflicting – to accept it, as it is.” A RIGHT TO HAVE FEELINGS

Among his friends in Aalborg, Axel reported another reason for his activism. “The United Nations had just assembled a declaration of human rights, but you dared not talk about the fact that a group

exists who also has a claim on these rights,” he wrote. “The right to have our feelings be known.” WRITING HISTORY

Tom Ahlberg was deputy mayor of Copenhagen in 1989, and it was he that ‘married’ Axel and Eigil. He gave a short speech during the ceremony that made only one alteration to the standard civil service: substituting the word marriage with the phrase registered partnership. Each of the 11 couples, starting with Axel and Eigil, followed Ahlberg into a private side room, where they exchanged their vows. Ove Carlsen, a psychologist who also married his partner that day, remembers: “It was totally wonderful,” he told Time in 2009. “There were musicians playing as we came down from the wedding room, and then we stepped out into the crowd and everyone was cheering. At that moment, I knew we were writing history.” RALLYING CALL TO THE WORLD

Journalist Rex Wockner was at City Hall reporting on the occasion: “I was so busy taking pictures and dealing with an interpreter, that I didn’t get emotional until the next morning

COPENHAGEN PRIDE 2015 11-16 AUGUST PRIDE PARADE 15 AUGUST 13.00 STARTS OFF AT FREDERIKSBERG TOWN HALL (FREDERIKSBERG RÅDHUS), ROUTE VIA VESTERBROGADE TO COPENHAGEN CITY HALL SQUARE (RÅDHUSPLADSEN)

when I saw Axel and Eigil on the front pages of the papers,” he wrote in an editorial. In an interview, before finally tying the knot, Eigil, who was then 67, told him: “We just never could have dreamed we would get this far.” But the fight for equal rights was far from over, and with the world listening, he quickly issued a rallying call to gay people everywhere: “Be open. Come out. Keep fighting,” he said. “This is the only way to change anything. If everyone comes out of the closet, then this will happen everywhere.” HEART-FELT FINAL SENTIMENTS

Axel and Eigil continued to run their gayfriendly bed and breakfast in northern Denmark after their marriage. However, each man continued to refer to the other as his ‘friend’, unable to change the pattern that had lasted decades, or at least until it was almost too late. In 1995, Eigil was in hospital following the heart attack that would eventually kill him. “A doctor saw I was always with him and asked who I was,” Axel recalled in 2009, speaking to Time. “And Eigil looked at me and said: ‘Him? He’s my husband.’” A LONG TIME COMING

Axel eventually passed away, at the end of October 2011, at the age of 96 in a hospital in Copenhagen. He had lived through nearly a century of society’s changing relationship with homosexuality. His obituary appeared in newspapers around the world honouring his achievements. But he did not manage to live to see the legalisation of gay marriage in June 2012. Really, it’s surprising it took so long. Danish society in general had seemed fairly comfortable with the idea of same-sex partnerships. Since being authorised in 1989, the country had witnessed many gay and lesbian civil unions. The legalisation of marriage was even preceded by homosexual couples being granted the right to adopt children (2011), which a YouGov poll in early 2013 revealed was only backed by 59 percent of the population, compared to the 78 percent who approved of marriage.

Ultimately, it was the reluctance of Parliament. When legalisation was finally confirmed in the spring of 2012, the then church minister, Manu Sareen, summed up the mood of the nation (or at least well over 60 percent) when he said “it had been a long time coming.” Finally, gays and lesbians were able to marry, less than a year after the passing of the pioneer to whom they owe everything.

We just never could have dreamed we would get this far. –EIGIL AXGIL

Museums as Threedimensional Films

Critically acclaimed film director Lone Scherfig sees many similarities between cinema and museums, viewing the museum experience as a sort of threedimensional film. As a board member at Øregård Museum, CURATOR met with Scherfig in the picturesque settings of the museum park. Interviewed by Fanan Imad Photographed by Hein Photography I truly love museums – the nerdier, dustier and more mysterious, the better! In my work as a film director, even though I usually create things in two dimensions on a screen, I’m struck by an entirely different kind of intensity when I see things in full-scale at museums. The concept of the curator of exhibitions is to some extent related to the concept of making films, with the joy of giving other people an experience, of sharing something with other people. In this sense, museums are very much like a physical, three-dimensional film. I made a film called Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself, where one of the characters goes to a museum with a bunch of children. The story and shooting of the film took place in Scotland, but the scene was inspired by a glass cabinet I saw at the 24

Zoological Museum in Copenhagen. The glass cabinet was filled with stuffed animals in their winter coats: alpine hares, arctic foxes, snowy owls, all delicate, white animals presented in front of a painted blue sky. I find these sort of things absolutely fascinating, even though I don’t normally have a special interest in zoology or flint axes or old clockworks. Take the National Museum of Denmark, for example – with the drawers that pull out to reveal exquisite old folding fans, spread out one after the other. And there’s also the Designmuseum Denmark, which has a library with a huge archive of protoypes comprising for example what an authentic Copenhagen door handle looks like. The culture that these museums represent is important, not only to preserve but also to exhibit and communicate, because it’s the way we physically get in touch with our ancestors and our history. I highly recommend visiting Øregård Museum, situated directly north of Copenhagen and very near small beaches, parks and shops. The family who built this house, where the museum is situated today, and who originally lived here, were slave owners when Denmark owned the former Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands) during the first half of the 19th century and very much part of the Copenhagen bourgeoisie at the time. The main objective of Øregård Museum and its extensive art collection is to communicate the family culture of the Danish Golden Age of the same period, reflecting on the conditions and life of the era. The museum also functions as an

exhibition space for contemporary visual art and photography. At Øregård Museum there is a belief that seeing one or two unforgettable paintings is better than seeing 200 paintings that neither affect you nor leave a lasting impression. At the same time, the area surrounding Øregård Museum is amazing, especially if you’re interested in architecture, as there are lots of original and lovely single-family homes to see here. One of the most memorable museum experiences I’ve had, happened directly after 9/11. I was stuck in Boston because the airport was shut down. And for a whole week I went to museums with my daughter, who at the time was about seven years old. We went to Harvard’s natural history muse-

ums, which are all about zoology, geology and medicine, with scientific collections comprised of things that people have carefully gathered from travels abroad and brought back home to display, long before photography, film and television were invented. I loved viewing these objects presented as they were, in the exact same way as when they were exhibited for the first time. Despite the circumstances, I am so happy that my daughter got to experience it! Taking her to museums throughout her childhood was one of my ways of making sure she was compensated for other kinds of artistic and educational experiences she’d miss because of our traveling. Gradually she started building up genuine love for art and active knowledge without even realizing it – disguised as entertainment!

In my work as a film director, I’m struck by an entirely different kind of intensity when I see things in full-scale at museums. –LONE SCHERFIG

If Øregård Museum sounds tempting, check out the Nivaagaard Collection, the Karen Blixen Museum, the David Collection, or the Hirschsprung Collection. Or the Bakkehus Museum, which also focuses on the Danish Golden Age. If Designmuseum Danmark has caught your attention, Gl. Holtegaard, Ordrupgaard Museum, or the Danish Architecture Centre might be of interest. 26

Copenhagen isn’t just about minimalistic Scandinavian design, New Nordic Cuisine and bicycles. The city offers its visitors some fairly spectacular views and scenery as well, quite sure to take your breath away. Introducing some of the most scenic highlights of the Danish capital, the following guide will lead you to local sights pretty easy on the eyes, to say the least. 1. DYREHAVEN 2. HELSINGØR HARBOUR 3. FREDENSBORG PALACE GARDENS 4. FURESØ 5. BOTANICAL GARDEN

29

Written by Frederikke Kirsmeier Preskou Illustrated by Sine Jensen 1. LET’S HAVE SOME ROYAL FUN

Denmark’s most visited natural resort, Dyrehaven (The Deer Park), is only a 20 minute train ride from the centre of Copenhagen. The park was established in 1669 when King Frederik III converted the area into his personal hunting grounds. Since 1756, Dyrehaven has been open to the public and with an estimated 7.5 million people visiting annually, it has been hugely popular. The perfect setting for a cosy picnic, the open plains, soft hills, quiet lakes and woodlands make for idyllic scenery – oh, and around 2000 heads of free range deer reside under the tree tops of huge old oaks and beech trees! The Hermitage Castle, built high up on the hill to function as the royal hunting lodge, is definitely worth passing by on your way around. Still used for hunting parties by the royal family today, the Hermitage is only open on select days. Nevertheless, it adds a finishing touch to the vigorous scenery. (slke.dk/slotte/eremitage-slottet) 2. MARITIME WONDERLAND

The town of Helsingør (Elsinore), an old seaport and the cultural capital of North Zealand, has really come to life with the establishment of the cultural harbour, a new urban space by the waterfront overlooking Øresund. The harbour offers a wide range of maritime experiences – from M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, to the polished sculpture HE by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, a reinterpretation of the well-known sculpture The Little Mermaid. Another architectural pearl is Kulturværftet, today a cultural centre hosting events but once a great shipyard, making the seaport of Elsinore a prosperous corner of Denmark in the 19th century. Last but not least, it is a must to visit Kronborg Castle, the home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. (mfs.dk / kuto.dk / kronborg.dk) 3. GO BAROQUE IN MAJESTIC SETTINGS

Fredensborg Palace Gardens provide some of the most spectacular historical scenery in North Zealand. The gardens, placed end to end with Fredensborg Palace, have recently undergone a large-scale renovation tracing the grounds back to their original baroque style, also known from 30

cphmuseums.com

Versailles. Today the Palace is a residence of the Danish royal family and state visits often take place here. Make a day of it and visit the old farm Flynderupgård, now a museum dedicated to Danish agriculture, about 30 minutes away. Or stick to a baroque themed trip and visit the Nivaagaard Collection, which offers, among other things, some very fine examples of Danish Baroque art. (slke.dk/slotshaver/fredensborg-slotshave / helsingormuseer.dk / nivaagaard.dk) 4. A PARADISE BY THE LAKE

It’s possible to obtain quite a clear perspective of Danish life and culture, on both local and national level, at a travelling distance of only 35 minutes north of Copenhagen. Furesø Museums will provide this for you – and it really is a threefold experience. Mosegaarden has its main focus on local history, zooming in on stories of original village life here, from ancient times until present day. Cornelen, a reconstructed grocery shop from the 1930s, is a piece of living local history. Here you can enjoy a fizzy drink while relaxing on a bench overlooking the old village pond. Last but certainly not least, the Danish Immigration Museum tells the story of the people who, over the course of time, have chosen to come to Denmark to live. To end the day, rent a rowing boat by the lake and enjoy the beautifully soothing, natural surroundings. (furesoemuseer.dk) 5. GREEN GOODIES AND CULTURAL HEAVYWEIGHTS

Are you searching for a place to take a rest or do you simply find looking at unusual vegetation fascinating? Then the Botanical Garden might be the place for you to take a break from the bustling city. This tranquil breathing space lies end to end with several other cultural heavyweights. To name a few, the Hirschsprung Collection is really worth a visit, accommodating a staggering selection of masterpieces, mainly from the Danish Golden Age. Another distinctive collection, only a short stroll away, is that of C.L. David, a Supreme Court attorney who collected Danish, European, as well as Islamic art in the first half of the 20th century. The beauty of these collections might soothe your soul as much as an afternoon nap in the Botanical Garden! (botanik. snm.ku.dk / hirschsprung.dk / davidmus.dk)

I would definitely recommend going to a football match. Go see FC Copenhagen, they’re the local team and in my opinion the greatest in Scandinavia! Parken is the home ground of FC Copenhagen and also the national stadium of Denmark. Get a couple of beers and a ‘park dog’ hotdog and enjoy the game!

BRIT, 71, PENSIONER

I’d like to recommend the Royal Danish Naval Museum in the Copenhagen neighbourhood of Christianshavn. It’s an exciting museum dedicated to the history of the navy and it’s beautifully situated right by the canal of Christianshavn. Rent a bike and ride along the Bicycle Snake (Cykelslangen), a cycle bridge along the harbour. The waters of Copenhagen are quite special. If you have time, ride by the beautiful new buildings by the nature reserve Amager Fælled.

KATHRINE, 25 MEDICAL STUDENT

The David Collection was a pleasant surprise to me. The museum covers both Danish and Islamic art, but also gives great insight into the culture and history of Islam. The guided tours are really good and the museum is situated right next to the King’s Garden (Kgs. Have), a beautiful park where you can enjoy an ice cream or a cup of coffee when you’re done.

Situated in beautiful, natural surroundings just north of Copenhagen, Brede Works (Brede Værk) and The Open Air Museum (Frilandsmuseet) are definitely worth recommending. Try working at an assembly line at Brede Works, Denmark’s largest, protected industrial complex, today a museum of industrial culture. Or take a walk through living history at the Open Air Museum, which features original farms, houses and mills, dating as far back as 1650, spread across 86 acres of land. The two museums are right around the corner from each other and both offer free admission, and with the Mill Stream (Mølleåen) running through the area, the spectacular scenery of the surroundings makes for a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic. Each Saturday and Sunday from 10-18, throughout the summer, you can explore the diverse culinary delights of Kødbyens Mad & Marked with food from all corners of the world. Located in the trendy meatpacking district of Copenhagen, Kødbyens Mad & Marked is a new food market offering up to 70 food stalls as well as fresh produce, all at affordable prices. The meatpacking district (Kødbyen) is in itself worth a visit, originally populated by slaughterhouses and butchers, the district has since become a hotspot for cool Copenhageners with high-profile galleries and a hip nightlife scene. (koedbyensmadogmarked.dk) 3. GUNPOWDER, CANNONS AND SWORDS

Established as an arsenal by King Christian IV in 1604, the Royal Danish Arsenal Museum (Tøjhusmuseet) is a museum of military history and arms located in the heart of Copenhagen. With more than 8000 swords, armours, machine guns and the like, the museum’s collection of weapons is one of the most extensive in the world. If weapons and war aren’t your thing, check out the special exhibition Tolkien’s Universe, based on a unique private collection featuring characters and objects from Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien’s famous works The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. 34
