Auditor-elect plans to keep position at City of Toppenish
LOU MARZELES EDITOR
Klickitat County Auditor-elect Heather Jobe plans to retain her full-time position as administrative services director for the City of Toppenish after she takes office in January.
Jobe took the job at Toppenish in October, after suddenly leaving her position in the Auditor’s Office where she worked for six years and just weeks before the general election. At that time, The Sentinel asked her why the City would hire her with only about two and a half months availability in the position if she won the
election, an inquiry aimed at inviting Jobe to address whether or not she would retain the position.
Jobe responded then only that she had informed the City she intended to take the oath of office on January 1 if elected.
Saturday The Sentinel asked Jobe for comment on her intention to remain in her position in Toppenish. By email she responded, “I thought the drama was done and people had moved on with their lives. How silly of me! I was elected because not only am I qualified to hold the position of Auditor, and I understand the needs and requirements of the position. Maybe before you and
my detractors (the ones who previously attempted and failed to throw me under the bus) make drama (I mean news) out of something so meaningless.
“Yes, I currently intend to work as the elected Klickitat County Auditor and keep my position with the City of Toppenish. And obviously, if it’s been brought to your attention, I’m not hiding that fact… Elected offices were never designed to be full time, in-the-office jobs. Look at the Legislature at both the state and federal level [with legislators] who don’t work all year. Take the elected County Commissioners, who are only in
Assessor says office will be in good hands as she retires
AUDREY HILL FOR THE SENTINEL
The Sentinel speaks with outgoing Klickitat County Assessor Crista Schroder on her years of service as she retires.
Crista Schroder, Klickitat County Assessor of eight years, made the decision earlier this year to not run for a third term. Schroder has worked for the county for over 20 years in multiple positions. She began her employment in the Klickitat County Assessor’s office in 2002 as an administrative assistant and current user programs coordinator specialist, working in that position for roughly five and half years until she moved to the Planning Department to, as she states, “Do something broader.” Schroder spent roughly seven years in that position while she moved up the chain of command. She “went from an assistant planner to an associate planner to a se-
nior planner,” she recalls.
In 2014 Schroder decided to throw her hat in the ring and run for the Assessor position. She served a four-year term and ran again unopposed in 2018. While serving this four-year term, she completed 20 years for the county in February 2022. She believes her employment in both the Assessor’s Office and the Planning Department helped her gain essential knowledge of the county.
Schroder states, “I realized that no office is an island... We work with all the other departments.”
Schroder chose to run because she says she saw something that needed to be fixed and believed she would be capable of fixing it.
When Schroder was first elected, she believed, “My primary goal was that this office serve the public; we are here to serve the public, whether that’s landowners or another office or department. We’re here to serve them. And
that wasn’t being done.” Schroder began cross-training the employees of the Assessor’s Office. She states, “If you have employees who are cross-trained, then when someone calls in, there’s always someone there who can answer their question.” Her goal was to always serve the public and never leave a question unanswered.
Although Schroder is retiring, she has confidence in Assessor-elect Billy Bare. Bare, currently chief appraiser under Schroder, and Jessica Byers, chief deputy, have been working together in the Assessor’s Office for years. Schroder is confident that “between the two of them, there’s a great team leadership dynamic that is still here. And they work well together. I’m confident that they’ll be able to move forward.” Schroder still plans to be available to the office. “I told them, I’m still available, I’m not
Mosbrucker retains ranking Republican position
Rep. Gina Mosbrucker, R-Goldendale, has been reappointed ranking Republican on the House Community Safety, Justice, and Reentry Committee, formerly the House Public Safety Committee.
House committee assignments were announced Friday by Washington House Republicans.
“It is an honor to continue to serve in leadership on this committee. My family has deep ties in law enforcement, and I am a member of the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Department Posse. Keeping our communities, neighborhoods, and citizens safe is among the most basic and essential elements of government and is very important to me,” said Mosbrucker.
“We have some major issues to tackle in the coming session to achieve a safer Washington, including addressing repercussions
of the state Supreme Court’s Blake Decision, which struck down the state’s felony drug possession law; restoring the ability of law enforcement to pursue a vehicle based on reasonable suspicion; and providing more tools to fight the increase in crime related to vehicle theft,” added Mosbrucker. “We also need to support our law enforcement officers by increasing training opportunities and tools to allow them to do their jobs, and by seeking ways to recruit more officers and retain those who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities and families safe.”
In addition to her community safety leadership role, Mosbrucker has been reappointed to the House Capital Budget Committee. The committee considers the state capital budget, which approves
money for the construction and repair of public buildings and for other long-term investments, such as land acquisitions and transfers. During the 2022 session, Mosbrucker helped to secure more than $7.6 million of capital budget appropriations for local projects, including $3.2 million for the new Northwest Harvest Food Bank warehouse in Yakima, and $670,000 for a new animal shelter in Goldendale.
“Our citizens send a lot of their hard-earned dollars to Olympia in the form of taxes. It’s very satisfying to bring some of these dollars back home for projects that create jobs and help our local communities,” said Mosbrucker.
The 14th District lawmaker has also been chosen to serve on the House Health Care and Wellness

Mid-Columbia
Mid-Columbia Medical Center (MCMC) in The Dalles and Adventist Health leadership announced that the two organizations have approved an affiliation agreement for MCMC to join Adventist Health (pending regulatory and state review). The affiliation with Adventist Health will advance rural healthcare— the nonprofit healthcare organization has committed $100 million to finance MCMC’s strategic capital needs. Over time, both organizations will work together.
“This is an exciting milestone event that reflects the hard work of our board of trustees, physician leadership, and executive leadership as we worked with the exceptional team at Adventist Health to come together in ways that will provide significant opportunities for our team of healthcare professionals, physicians and APPs [advanced-practice providers], as well as our entire community,” said Robb Van Cleave, chair of the MCMC Board of Trustees.
MCMC and Adventist Health say they intend to maintain and enhance the immediate and long-term financial viability of MCMC to make needed investments
in the healthcare campus, technology, and programs.
According to a press statement, the affiliation will:
• Promote reliability, availability, and continuity of healthcare in order to meet the needs of the community;
• Strengthen MCMC’s ability to deliver healthcare programs that support the well-being of the community;
• Increase health equity and equitable access to care for all residents of The Dalles and the Columbia River Gorge, furthering its charitable mission;
• Broaden and deepen MCMC’s engagement with and support of the community; and
• Provide a broader depth of healthcare services that people of the community need and can access close to where they live and work.
For employees, physicians, and APPs, the statement adds, the affiliation will:
Provide access to sophisticated recruitment capabilities to retain high-quality primary care and specialty care physicians and APPs;
• Provide additional resources and opportuni-
ties that can position MCMC as an employer of choice for employees and clinical partner of choice for the medical staff community;
• Build upon the great work of our teams to continue increasing the clinical quality of services and programs; and
• Promote and retain team-based culture, consistent with the Planetree Philosophy that celebrates MCMC’s past, while building its future.
MCMC will have a legal board of directors comprised of the Adventist Health board of directors. MCMC will also have a community board that will include all trustees serving on the MCMC Board of Trustees at the time of the closing of the affiliation and that will also include physicians on the MCMC medical staff and other qualified members of the community appointed by Adventist Health.
“We look forward to the benefits our affiliation with Adventist Health will bring to our community, especially as it pertains to access, equity, cost, and quality,” said Dennis Knox, president and CEO of MCMC. “While we’re still waiting on state approval, our two organizations
approve
will continue to meet and discuss how, together, we can best deliver equitable, cost-effective, high-quality care now and for years to come.”
“We are pleased to welcome MCMC to the Adventist Health family,” said Kerry L. Heinrich, president and CEO of Adventist Health. “Affiliating with MCMC is a natural mission and cultural fit, as we both are deeply passionate about improving access to rural healthcare and supporting team members and medical staff.”
Pending final regulatory and state approvals, MCMC will become part of Adventist Health’s Oregon Network that includes other medical centers in Portland and Tillamook and over 47 other clinics. To learn more, visit: MCMC.net/partnership-exploration.
The MCMC Board of Trustees worked with health care-specialized investment banking firm Juniper Advisory to review several possible health system affiliates, ultimately entering into an LOI with Adventist Health throughout the due diligence phase that has led to the approval of the affiliation agreement.
Members of the Klickitat County Republicans (KCR) braved the cold and snow to meet at the Dallesport Community Center on Saturday, December 10, for their bi-annual Organizational meeting. Recently elected Precinct Committee Officers took their seats, and candidates for the 2023-2024 Executive Board were nominated and elected.
Shane Cagle, newly elected vice chairman, commented, “It’s encouraging to see the unity our party has as Klickitat County Republicans with such diverse viewpoints on topics. We look forward to the next two years of service and into the Presidential election cycle of 2024 with optimistic expectations for our future.”
Lisa Evans, re-elected chairwoman, agreed. “It is exciting to see the growth in size and the range of views with this group,” she said.
“Family and community are the common focus for strengthening our county.”
Matthew Langdon was
re-elected as state committeeman, and Erin Hartford joins the group as state committeewoman. The appointed treasurer and secretary are Sean Ciemiewicz and Grant Cheney respectively.
Due to the predominance of Republican candidates on the ballot, the KCR hosted a “Celebrate the Red Wave” Christmas party after the meeting. Newly elected county officials were invited. Sheriff Bob Songer, Auditor-elect Heather Jobe, and Assessor-elect Billi Bare were in attendance for food, fellowship, and a group-effort dessert prepared while singing the “Twelve Days of Christmas.”
Songer extended his appreciation “to the River of Life Church in Goldendale, the Business Liberty Alliance hosted by Murphy’s in Bingen, and to all the voters who supported me. I appreciate your confidence in my leadership to continue serving as your Sheriff for the next four years.”

Tuesday night the safe in Will G. Faulkner’s store in Bickleton was blown open and his cash drawer ruined by being pried off. A heavy snow fell in this section Tuesday, and it looked as if it would continue all night, and the burglars must have thought their tracks would be obliterated so they could not be followed, but the old adage held good: “That man proposes and God disposes.” And the snow ceased falling about 2 a.m., and their tracks were easily followed to their home in Dot. The safe only contained about $25. It is presumed they intended robbing the post office in Van Nosterns Store, but a vicious dog the boys kept in the store at night probably freighted them away. There were tracks from the hardware store to the post office.

As everyone knows by now, the Klickitat County Commissioners have been attempting to come up with a budget for 1993. And just like every other budget year, every department is going to do its best to loosen the commissioners’ purse strings as best they can. While this year is no different in that sense, there is one major difference in this year’s budget than in past years—the Regional Disposal monies. Since Klickitat County allowed Regional Disposal Company [then Rabanco] to build a landfi ll on the east end of the county, the county will be earning an estimated $2 million in tipping fees. Keeping this in mind, the county authorized GBD architects of Portland, Oregon, to submit a proposal for a new office building to be located on the old Hall Hotel lot. Maybe the county is just specifying what they want Santa Claus to bring them this year, but the odds are that good old St. Nick won’t be able to fit a new office building in his sleigh, and the county will be forced to spend a few million dollars to build it on their own.

Sesquicentennial Corner: Bringing Goldendale back to its roots
Did you know the that the Library of Congress has a section called “Chronicling America” where you can search digitized newspapers from 1777 to 1963. Though The Sentinel is not one of the digitized newspapers, Goldendale and Klickitat County are mentioned in other newspapers. Below are portions of a letter printed in The Vancouver Independent , September 11, 1879. The letter was simply signed “Yours, &c., N. H. B.” You may find this, and other Goldendale references, at chroniclingamerica.loc. gov. For reading convenience we have not put the letter in quotes.
Editor Independent:
I regretted, as did the friends of the Independent in Klickitat, that you and Capt. Smallwood did not accompany me upon my annual visit to Klickitat last week. The little town of Goldendale, now the County seat, has much improved since last year when we made our flying visit. At least fi fty new buildings, stores, residences, etc., have been erected; a new hotel (in addition to two there last year), a new church, (M.E), another in process of erection near Goldendale, another shortly to be built. Rev. Mr. Thompson, of Olympia, (Presbyterian,) has been making the place a visit, organized a church of thirty members and intends soon to build a church, so that the spiritual welfare of the community will be well cared for. The spiritual (ardent) welfare of other members of the community is diligently, if not solicitously, cared for by two establishments.
There are now five saw mills in the vicinity, and two grist mills. Johnson is doing a good business. Schuster, “old Schuster” I should call him, or “everybody’s friend,” (Wellington De Boots) as he is known, is in the butcher business, as well as the duties of
sheriff, which office he has for so many years faithfully filled. They have a new Court house nearly completed, and a new jail, both of which from appearances afford a strong hint to Clarke county that “comparisons are odious.” Altogether the town seems flourishing. Much to my surprise upon entering the town I found the streets well sprinkled, and soon discovered a veritable watering cart in slow but solemn grandeur parading the streets. At sight of this modern evidence of progress I felt an almost irresistible inclination to cry, hurrah for Goldendale!
After completing official business, next morning was invited to accompany Johnson and several gentlemen, with Seitz of the Klickitat Sentinel, chicken shooting. Went some miles below town. I soon discovered that the mysteries of chicken shooting, or rather hunting over the bunch-grass and boulders of Klickitat prairie was not quite in my line, for while “Barkis was willin” I failed to fi nd victims for my murderous inclinations, while Johnson, (who, by the by, should be designated the Nimrod of Klickitat,) with rapid strides, soon disappeared across the prairie, while the bang of his gun in rapid succession indicated the funeral of
many an inoffensive bird, while I by turns walked, stood, hunted, (but “nary a shoot,”) swearing, (vowing I mean,) that if only one of the aforesaid inoffensive, innocent prairie chickens should cross my path I should slay him; aye! if I risked my life in the encounter. Johnson soon returned with seventeen scalps. So murderous had my pent up, unsated ambition become, that I felt no other alternative than to shoot Johnson—law and order, prudence, prevailed.
The editor, (by accident,) shot one bird, (was aiming at a dove on the fence and shot a poor chicken down by the creek;) helped Sears shoot another. A confl ict for the honors of that battle became imminent between them. Johnson, (as befit a worthy chieftain,) aided by my self-asserted lieutenancy, decided in favor of— Johnson and the Lieutenant.
Sears betook himself to the cooling companionship of a neighboring spring, and there with avidity demolished the best part of a pan of cucumbers, which an old lady in the neighborhood had placed there for safe keeping. I left next morning. I do not know whether he is still alive or not. Am expecting soon to read an obituary notice, died from “colly wobbles.”

How to buy over-thecounter hearing aids
Dear Savvy Senior,
I’m interested in getting some of the new over-thecounter hearing aids that just became available a few month ago. Can you offer any tips to help me with this?
Straining to Hear
Dear Straining,
The new FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids that started rolling out this fall are a real game changer for the roughly 48 million Americans with hearing loss. Adults with impaired hearing can now walk in and buy hearing aids at a pharmacy, big box chain, consumer electronics store, or online without a prescription and without consulting an audiologist.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved this new class of hearing aids to lower prices and improve their availability.
you’ll need to work with an audiologist or hearing instrument specialist to find a hearing aid that works for you.
What to look for:
To help you choose a good OTC hearing aid that meets your needs and preferences, here are some important points to keep in mind.
Return policy: It can take weeks for your brain to adjust to hearing louder sounds through a hearing aid, so be sure to choose a brand that offers at least a 30-day free trial period or money back return policy. The FDA requires manufactures to print their return policy on the package.
Set up: Many OTC hearing aids require a smartphone or computer to adjust and operate the devices to your specific needs, while others have the controls on the device. This will also be labeled on the box. Choose one that fits your preference and comfort level.
Battery: The package also should tell you what kind of battery the device uses. Some of the older versions of hearing aids have replaceable batteries, but many of the newer ones have rechargeable batteries that come in a charging case and are charged every night.
Customer support: Some companies offer unlimited customer support to help you adjust or fine-tune your hearing aids, while others might limit support or charge extra. Be sure you check.
For more information, including product reviews, see the National Council on Aging’s OTC hearing aids buyer’s guide at NCOA.org/adviser/hearing-aids/over-the-counter-hearing-aids.
Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
Savvy Senior, Jim Miller
About a third of people ages 65 to 74 and half of those over age 75 have hearing loss severe enough to affect their daily life. Yet about 80 percent of people who would benefit from hearing aids don’t wear them, according to the National Institutes of Health, primarily because of the hefty price tag.
Traditional hearing aids ordered through an audiologist cost anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000 a pair and are not covered by most private insurers and traditional Medicare. The new OTC hearing aids range from $200 up to $3,000.
Who should get them?
OTC hearing aids are specifically designed for adults (18 and older) who have mild to moderate hearing loss. You don’t need a hearing exam or prescription to buy them, and they are designed so you can fit and tune them yourself.
Do you have mild to moderate hearing loss? The specific signs are if you are having trouble hearing or understanding conversations, especially in noisier environments, over the phone, or if you can’t see who’s talking. Or if you need a higher volume of TV, radio, or music than other people or have to ask others to speak more slowly, louder, or repeat what they said.
If, however, your hearing problem is more severe than that–for example, if you also have trouble hearing loud sounds, such as power tools or motor vehicles, or if you struggle to hear conversations in quiet settings–then your hearing loss is considered more significant than over-the-counter aids are intended to address.
To help you get a basic sense of your hearing problem, you can take an app-based test like Mimi (mimi. health) or SonicCloud (soniccloud.com).
If you find that your hearing loss is significant,
Burn-out has got to go
The Festival of Wheels gave it another try this year. It seems the attendance has dwindled to much lower levels than when the event was new, 10 years ago. There are a lot of competing car shows this time of year, so it doesn’t surprise me .
This year Goldendale Motorsports Association and ABATE brought back the burn-out, which was tried several times in the past with questionable benefits to the town. This year someone had the brilliant idea to use the old skateboard park as a place to stage the return of the burnout. It was held on the concrete slab, a tempting medium for anyone inclined to bum rubber. Rednecks of many degrees, punk kids or maybe the little old lady from Pasadena.

I personally was left with a bad taste in my mouth and lungs. Even though I made it a point to stay away from the burn-out and was at my home where I thought I would escape the noise and smoke, when the toxic cloud rose from the park and drifted over the Little Klickitat River Park (the swimming pool) on to the kids and families at the pool and on to me while I was sitting on my property. We were contaminated by the toxins in the smoke, and my eyes and throat were imitated, and my lungs filled with carbon monoxide and other cancer causing toxic compounds for three hours.

A wrap-up account
I think the city of Goldendale needs to rethink supporting burnouts in our park. Next year don’t issue a permit to
I recently received an updated “Terms for Business and Deposit Account Agreement” from Columbia Bank. I am not in the habit of reading the fine print but for some reason this time I did. I came across an “added” line that I found very concerning. Again, this line is both for personal and business accounts. It reads: “We may refuse to open and account and may close your account at any time for any reason or for no reason at all.”
“For No Reason At All” I particularly found offensive.
Over the years Sandy DeMent has written about the bizarre and copious range of stuff people have deposited on her property. She is glad to report an end to the series.
I contacted the bank for an explanation. The answer was essentially that “we wouldn’t do that.” Then why is it in your documents, I asked. The answer was to send me up the chain of command. The second person gave the same answer as the first and then was to have me con-
This will probably be my last annual “trashy” letter, because there is less of it, I am happy to say. So here’s the 2022 tally along the one-third mile of road on my lands:
Most interesting, the count of (beer) cans and bottles has dropped steadily since 2018, from 22 to just four this year. I was making progress teaching the Douglas firs to use their long droopy branches to
snatch up the beer cans and hurl them back at the pickup trucks that tossed them. I did get three mylar balloons, two wishing happy birthday and one so faded it wasn’t possible to tell what was being celebrated. I also picked up one fancy drill bit, that I plan to keep.
The weirdest “dumps” this year involved animal parts. Some friendly soul tossed a dead rattlesnake, minus its rattles and its head, at the end of my driveway. That I did not pick up but left for the crows. Another confused person heaved two plastic bags filled with salmon guts and bones into the heavy brush along Wahkiacus

Creek. The nearest salmon are in the Klickitat River at least a mile away, so how the creek got involved is puzzling. Getting rid of the evidence? Too poor to pay their bill for trash pick-up? In any case the odors soon attracted the crows, who also did a fine job making the plastic bags disappear.
So, thank you, Goldendale Sentinel, for printing the latest inventory of rural trash. With any luck 2023 will be a sparkling clean year with no trash at all. We can hope, right?
Letters to the editor should be original and comment on an issue. Deadline for letters is noon Monday for the same week’s paper.
Requests to keep letters exactly as they were written when published cannot be honored. All letters are subject to editing for grammar, spelling, clarity, and/or brevity. There is a suggested length limit of about 300 words, though more may be allowed if there are fewer letters.
Unsigned letters (including anonymity requests), letters with fictitious signatures, letters with multiple signatures, or letters to public officials are not accepted.
Please keep the tone of letters free of rants, wild speculation, unsubstantiated claims, or pointedly personal comments. Letters that go overboard in these directions may be refused publication.
Writers must include name, city/town of residence, and phone number for verification purposes. (Street address is not required, only city or town.)

On Sept 4 I will be asking the mayor and his administration to make an ordinance forbidding anyone from reckless unsafe burnouts in any ones neighborhood or any street in the Goldendale city limits. I would appreciate some support from like-minded citizens at the council meeting. Let them know how you feel.

One busy week
I don’t think one more thing could have been crammed into last week’s busy schedule here in Glenwood. When I asked a certain little third grade girl last Monday if perhaps we should practice her spelling words, she informed me her class had no spelling test that week. When I asked why, she replied, “We are just way too busy with everything.” Well, okay, then. Here are some of the highlights from that busy week.
On Monday, December 12, the middle school boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled to Bickleton. Both teams came home with wins, and the games were very exciting. Way to go, Eagles. I suspect the long drive home in foggy, icy conditions was also exciting but in a different way. Luckily, the team bus and all the families who traveled over to the games made it home safely.
Every day, the school kids practiced for their Christmas program that they put on for families and friends on the evening of December 14. Mr. Demchuk served as master of ceremonies for the program. Grace Griffin opened the program with a reading of “The Night Before Christmas.” The 4th and 5th grade classes played “Jingle Bells,” “Ode to Joy,” and “Silent Night” on their recorders, under the direction of Mr. Crowder. They all did a great job.
Hazel Fujita, an 8th grader, read the poem, “A Friend’s Greeting,” followed by the adorable little preschool students in snowmen costume as they sang, “I’m a Little Snowman.” Those sweet little kids stole the show, for sure. Thank you, Ms. Kessinger, for the wonderful preschool presentation.
The high school drama class presented a cute play, “The Antarctic Mystery.” After the play, one of the actors, Ally McFall, read the poem “Kris Kringle.” The kindergarten through 3rd grade classes finished out the program as they sang “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas,” “My Two Front Teeth,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” accompanied by Mr. Demchuk. Mrs. Arnold also worked with Mr. Demchuk and the K-3 students to help them learn and practice their songs. It was a team effort, and the kids did very well. After the program, the school children and their families moved to the multipurpose room for a reception where the children could visit Santa and have their pictures taken, as the Glenwood Homemakers served delicious cookies and hot cocoa. It was a great night for our kids and their families.
On Thursday afternoon the Glenwood staff and students participated in a winter sports athletes pep rally that began with singing of the Glenwood Eagles fight song to liven things up. The Cheer squad was introduced by their advisor, Mrs. Throop; then they led all the students out on the gym floor in a fun game of “Cheerleader Says.” It was pretty funny to watch and very entertaining. The middle school girls and boys basketball teams were introduced by their coach Ms. Kessinger, followed by the high school teams who were introduced by the Klickwood girls coach, Mrs. Patterson. Mr. Curtis, the boys coach, was unable to attend.
Jaecee Hoctor presented the two girls participating in Club Volleyball this winter: Jocee Hoctor, who plays on the Goldendale 14 Gold team, and Jentry Hoctor, who plays on the Goldendale 12 Purple team. Jaecee is not the coach; she’s their driver (and mom).
Their coaches were unable to attend as they live and work in Goldendale. Tye Murray was recognized for his participation in Vintage Snowmobile Racing. His first race of the season will be in January. The assembly finished with a wild and exciting game of Bump and another singing of “Onward Eagles.”
That same night, after the pep assembly, the middle school girls and boys teams played their last game of the season against Centerville here on their home court. The girls came out victorious despite having only five girls for the entire game. The boys had a rougher go up against the much larger (in size and number) Centerville boys’ team. But they never gave up, they played hard, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.
Okay, as if the week weren’t already filled to almost overflowing, the middle and high school students participated in their gift exchange on the morning of Friday, December 16, which was followed by the delicious Christmas dinner prepared by cooks Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Keithley. It was good to see all the families who joined together with the students and staff for that special dinner and program. Citizens of the Month names were drawn, Perfect Attendance awards were given, and the Homecoming court was announced. Princes are Kyler Henderson, Shae Jackson, Gavin Bensel, and Landon Sanchey. Princesses on the court are Bella Bensel, Emily Molyneaux, Tiana Jackson, and Paityn Henderson. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good weather when the Homecoming game and dance dates arrive. Students and staff are now enjoying their Christmas break and will return to classes in 2023.
Finally, our high school girls and boys Klickwood basketball teams traveled to Helix, Oregon, for the Helix Tournament. On Friday both teams play Helix and both teams won their games. I don’t have statistics for the boys’ games, but on Friday against Helix, Emma Patterson again led the scoring with 19 points, followed by Jayla Avila – 11, Alise Gimlin – 10, and Lena Thiemann – 2.
On Saturday the Klickwood girls played Athena. This time Alise led the scoring with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Jayla followed with 12, Emma – 10, Lena – 8, Tiana Jackson – 6, Paityn -2. Klickwood girls also won that game with a score of 62-46. Wow, Klickwood. Way to go. These girls were tournament champions and brought home the trophy that will be shared between the Glenwood and Klickitat High Schools. The Klickwood boys had a really tough second game against the Umatilla JV and came up a bit short, but they played well and notched a win in their first game of the season. On the bus ride home after the tournament, Coach Patterson led the kids in the Eldred Cheer. I’d bet Coach Eldred was smiling down on these kids as they played with such heart and determination. Proud of all our Klickwood teams and Coach Patterson and Coach Curtis.
The Pioneer Memorial Community Church will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. and the Christmas day service at 10 a.m. All are welcome to join together to celebrate the season.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone.

For the month of December, 61 Goldendale middle school FFA members collected specific food items in their agriculture classroom in conjunction with the Goldendale middle school food drive. FFA members brought in 74 food items, and the chapter purchased the remaining 26 food items that were specifically asked for by the soup kitchen.

Twenty-one Goldendale middle school FFA members went to the primary school during the month of December to teach students in grades 1 through 3 about evergreen trees. The FFA members selected and read the book “Zee Grows a Tree.”
After the reading activity, the primary students worked on a cut-and-paste
FFA members with a list of 10 popular food items to put into the holiday meal baskets. The items were cake mix, frosting, pancake mix, syrup, raisins, bread, peanut butter, spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, and parmesan cheese. Nineteen FFA members were able to make up 10 baskets to hand out at their assigned soup kitchen night of serving dinner.
Nineteen additional FFA members made hats and scarves with Mrs. Rebecca Bare to donate in the baskets. Mrs. Bare worked with
students to cut fleece material and hand-tie the fabric into the hats and scarves.
Additionally, members were able to meet with Mrs.
‘Zee’ grow a tree
activity and put the life cycle of an evergreen tree in order with the FFA members. Then students made holiday swags by tying evergreen branches with ribbon and bow for decoration. Johnny Cahill, GMS FFA member, stated, “The younger students seemed like they were proud of themselves for making the swags and were excited to take them home.”
In the project, the members taught eight classrooms about the stages of ever -
green trees. They were able to work with a total of 147 primary students. “I really love being able to read to the kids and teaching them something new about agriculture,” commented Regan Beasley, GMS FFA member.
We would like to say a big thank you to the Yakima Farm Bureau for providing funding for Goldendale Middle School FFA to purchase all their books for the project.
Remember the lost and found
A quick report from our liaison at the Lyle Fire Department, Patty Elkins: Winter Celebration with Santa was a great success. A huge thank you to everyone who worked to get this done—the cookies and beverages, the kiddo gift bags, and the lighted fire trucks. A big thank you to Jim Carley, Hans Hoomans, Elisha Neipp, and Glenda Lovejoy from the Lyle Fire & Rescue District No. 4 for decorating and driving our rigs this year. Here’s to a wonderful holiday!
The Fire District’s second report is about the SR14 highway near milepost 73. There are going to be delays with flaggers about a half mile west of Chamberlain Lake Rest Area. There has been alternating traffic starting around 10:30 a.m. since December 15 that will continue until further notice. EMTs ask for you to use caution and pay attention to the flaggers.
The Dallesport/Murdock Fire Department wishes to convey their thanks after their food drive: “We are pleased to announce that 1,981 units of food donated by the communities of Dallesport and Murdock have been delivered to the Lyle Lions Club for Christmas Food Baskets. Thank you to all of the collectors and donors.
Lyle’s Fire Department wants you to be prepared for living in the Gorge during winter by sharing some safety tips: We sometimes are surprised by the quick weather changes. Being prepared just in case is never a bad idea. Stock your trunk for the winter: sand, shovel, flashlight, flares, a portable jump starter, water, and blankets are some of the items we recommend having on hand.”
The Lyle School District is pleading with parents to come and browse through their lost and found bin that has become overflowing. You may recognize one of your child’s missing items. Even the students can browse through. There is a time constraint here because after Winter Break, they are going to turn it all over to donations. On a personal note about lost and found: I remember going through the lost and found at the Bingen Theater when I was a child and found one of my necklaces that I didn’t even know I’d lost. It was a complete surprise. The manager would allow my siblings and me to sweep under the seats and clean the lobby while waiting for our parents
to pick us up. We were sometimes the only reason he was there so late. He was a very nice man.
Rumor floating around has it that a restaurant across from the Lyle Café may be opening soon. I hear it is going to be called the Hot Wok and that they are hiring. For an application, go to the Lyle Merc and check with them. Good luck. It would be nice to have a Chinese restaurant right here in downtown Lyle.
Many Dallesport neighbors were commenting on Facebook about the coyotes being back and creating a stir with their prowling and yowling from 5th and F streets to Sunridge. So, once
again, keep your pets inside and safe from predators. Have you given much thought about this New Year’s resolutions? Stop smoking, drink less, get weight under control, get help with addictions, and, above all, start being a good neighbor, and do what you can to make their lives better, without recognition. Also, you’ve heard it before from me, but I have to reiterate: volunteering is a great resolution. It is a worthwhile commitment that gives back to the volunteer by creating self worth and a feeling of satisfaction.

Dallesport resident inducted into relief agency´s Hall of Fame
ShelterBox USA, a global humanitarian disaster and confl ict relief organization, today welcomed Dallesport, Washington, resident Lora Helmer to its Hall of Fame after years of service, including raising more than $100,000.
For more than 20 years, ShelterBox has provided shelter and other essential items to the most vulnerable forced from their homes by disaster and confl ict. It is currently responding to the war in Ukraine, catastrophic flooding in Pakistan, historic drought in Eastern Africa, and other crises around the world.
“Five years ago, Lora Helmer joined the team as a ShelterBox USA Ambassador, a volunteer who continually raises awareness and mobilizes charitable support for the lifesaving mission of ShelterBox,” said ShelterBox USA President Kerri Murray. “During her tenure, she has served hundreds of hours, volunteering her time to inspire others with ShelterBox’s global humanitar-
ian work. From constructing tents and displays, to delivering inspiring presentations at Rotary Clubs and conferences, Lora has raised more than $100,000 in donations. Her volunteerism has directly enabled ShelterBox to expand its projects in some of the world’s most extreme disaster and conflict zones, including in Ukraine.”
There are more than 300 ShelterBox ambassadors, volunteers across the country who represent the organization and fundraise for it. Raising $100,000 qualifies an ambassador to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Helmer, who sits on the ShelterBox USA Ambassador Council, is the 48th member of its Hall of Fame.
ShelterBox provides humanitarian aid in the form of family-sized tents and essential items to start repairing and rebuilding homes. The organization’s kits and boxes are customized for each response, frequently supplying items such as cooking sets, solar
lights, blankets, and water fi lters.
Helmer is also a member of the Rotary Club of White Salmon-Bingen, in District 5100. ShelterBox is the official project partner of Rotary International for disaster response.
“Lora exemplifies the Rotary core value of, ‘Service Above Self,’ and her passionate leadership as a ShelterBox Ambassador is enabling the recovery and transforming the lives of displaced families every day,” Murray said. “We are so thrilled to recognize Lora Helmer in the Hall of Fame at ShelterBox USA.”
ShelterBox has deployed to disasters like the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, and it launched its largest response to date in the Philippines after Typhoon Rai last December. It currently has multiple emergency programs in Ukraine, working around the clock to help families stay warm this winter.
the office once or twice a week, or the Goldendale City Council all, if not most, of whom have other full-time jobs. Why is this now newsworthy? Am I supposed to be in the office 24/7? Do you think that previous Auditors were in the office full time?”
Jobe then cited Washington RCW 36.16.125, which says an elected official can be considered to fail his or her responsibilities by being absent on the job without legitimate cause for at least 30 consecutive days.
Jobe also cited some elected officials who
engage in businesses while in office, such as one who runs a dance studio and others who engage in ranching. But none of those situations are people with full-time employment at other companies or agencies while occupying positions generally considered to maintain heavy workloads, or they are people in elected positions with clearly lesser time constraints.
The Sentinel asked Jobe how she planned to do her work in the Auditor’s Office while working in Toppenish and if she would offer information on how
she planned to split her time between the positions.
“This is not about news,” Jobe said in a subsequent email. “This is about a personal grudge against me, and you are playing into their drama. That said, to answer your question, I will put in whatever hours it takes to get the job done.”
Jobe offered no further information and declined to continue a conversation on the matter beyond offering to make an appointment to meet once she is in office. That appointment, she insisted, would only be about matters relevant to voters.
Committee. The committee considers a broad range of issues relating to physical and behavioral health care services, long-term care, licensing of health care facilities, credentialing of health care providers, regulations of pharmaceuticals, and affordability and access to health insurance.
“I’m looking forward to learning more about the health care needs and services in our state, particularly as COVID and other viral illnesses continue to challenge hospitals and health care facilities that are short staffed. We need to find ways to increase staffi ng levels and ensure
our citizens, including the elderly, have access to reliable, affordable health care and prescription drugs,” noted Mosbrucker.
Mosbrucker will begin her fi fth term in office serving the 14th Legislative District when the 2023 Legislature convenes in Olympia on January 9.
abandoning ship. They can call me anytime and run things past me and take my advice or not. I’m still vested in the success of this office. All offices are important, but this one particularly because I’m so personally invested in it.”
Schroder believes it is important for the head of office to be in the office consistently. Due to personal reasons, she sometimes found it hard to make it to the office every day. “When I’m not here, it stresses me out. I have capable staff; they keep me informed. They call me. I’m always
available to them. But it’s just hard when you’re not here.” She believes that Bare will do an excellent job in leading the office due to her commitment, knowledge, and experience.
Schroder says she chose to retire for a multitude of reasons, one being her and her husband’s well-drilling business. She states that she “would like to be more involved with that business. As far as the paperwork side, I would be able to relieve his burden with a lot of that.” In 2019 she also bought a small farm and says, “I want to be able to
spend more time farming. We have livestock, Angus cattle, and sheep that we’re raising and selling as well. And I just want to spend more time with that. I also just purchased a couple quarter horse colts that are not even a year old. I’ll be doing all their own training for that.”
Schroder will be serving as the Assessor through the end of the year, with Bare being sworn in Thursday, December 22, and who will take office at the start of the new year.

Keesy Timmer
For The SenTinel
Keesy (pronounced “Casey”) has deep ties to Goldendale even after spending two decades writing hit songs in Nashville. He is particularly known as writer of the number-one Country music hit “Yeah Boy.” Here he reminisces about his connections with Goldendale.
As far back as I can remember I’ve always loved Goldendale. There’s just something about this little town in Klickitat County that’s always appealed to me. Maybe it was the fact that it’s where my people came from, where some of my deepest roots were planted. My Dad, Bernard, and his parents, Gerard and Maria Timmer, landed in Washington State via The Netherlands. After settling in Seattle in the early ’50s, on a weekend away they discovered this beautiful little town called Goldendale and fell in love with its scenic views and decided that was where they wanted to “do life.”
My papa established a medical practice, and he was the town doctor for many years. As an abdominal surgeon, he helped bring surgery to this little town.
My dad grew up on Columbus Avenue in the little red house on the creek and was a prolific golfer who set the course record at the Goldendale Golf Club in 1964 that held up for nearly 50 years.
My mom’s parents, Pete and Joan Heming, also lived in Goldendale, where ‘Poppy’ Pete was a journeyman electrician; he passed away this year at the age of 96. He helped build the dams on the Columbia River during the hydroelectric boom.
My parents, Pam and Bernard, were high school sweethearts who were married at the United Methodist Church in 1971, the year my mom graduated from Goldendale High.
Though my parents later settled in Spokane, we came back to Goldendale often, and very early on I began spending all my summers, spring breaks, and long weekends in Goldendale. I used to love visiting my grandparents’ ranch off Pine Forest Road. To me, it was the childhood of all childhoods. As a kid, my best friends were my cousins, Heather and Holly Heming, and pretty much all we did was have fun. There were always old dirt bikes hanging around with plenty of gas and property to ride them. My cousins had horses, and we all had sheep and pigs. There weren’t many rules at Grammy and Poppy’s place, mostly to eat a good breakfast. I think the freedom appealed to me, but the fun we had just being kids has stuck with me all my life. I consider myself very fortunate to have had such an amazing childhood with the best grandparents a kid could ask for.
When we got a little older, Heather and Holly became active in Junior Rodeo where they were hitting the CJRA Rodeo circuit almost every weekend, barrel rac -
ing, goat tying, and pole bending. My Uncle Scott and Aunt Patti (Bowcutt) were very supportive in keeping them involved and would let me tag along to all the rodeos. After a while, they decided maybe it would be fun to get me into rodeo, too. They figured I was already going and maybe I could enter in an event. Since there weren’t many events for a non-horseman to enter, and I wasn’t cut out for rough stock, they thought maybe I would like to chute dogg. For those who don’t know what chute dogging is, it’s basically bulldogging without the horse. You’d settle down in the chute next to a 500- to 600-pound steer; when you gave the signal, the chute gates would open, and you’d go running out with the steer. After you crossed the 8-foot line, you would kick your feet out, grab it by the horns, wait for its nose to come up, and pull till the steer fell flat on the ground. This was a very exciting idea, but someone was going to have to teach me how to do it. Lucky for me, we knew just the guy.
Ron Whitmire was a professional bulldogger and had his own arena not far out of town where they ran their own steers and practiced on a regular basis. I’d known Ron and Luann my whole life and was the ring bearer at their wedding.
My mom used to check me out of school anytime Ron was entered in the Spokane area, and I used to love going to see him perform. He was the real deal, and I always looked up to him. When he was asked if he’d be up to teaching me how to steer wrestle, he didn’t hesitate to say yes. That’s the kind of guy Ron was.
My first experience at Ron’s arena was eye-opening, to say the least! It’s where I first discovered what a “hotshot” was, and it was the first time I met my soon-to-be friends, Tom Harrington, Chad Quantrell, and Tye and Jace Zielinski. They were all training with Ron and in return helped him do the chores around the ranch. I was 13 at the time, super city-slicky, and very green. But these boys took care of me. They took me under their wings and helped me learn how to chute dogg. They treated me like one of their own, when most people would not have given me the time of day. I knew Tye and Jayce’s mom was very sick with Huntington’s Disease, although I didn’t know the extent of it. I also knew that it was hereditary, and there was a good chance Tye and Jace would also get it. But at this time they were just normal young men, going to school, working, rodeoing, and just being kids. It’s a time in my life I will never forget. When Tye got his license, I was the first person he picked up in his ’65 Ford F-100. I think he came straight from the DMV and met me at the end of my grandparents’ driveway. Those days were full of laughs, first beers, and Copenhagen, long before the world got the best of our innocence and long before
Huntington’s Disease got the best of the Zielinski brothers.
As time went on I remained good friends with Tye and Tom but spent most of my time with Bart Fouts in the summers working ranches, running irrigation, bucking bales, and rodeoing on the weekends. These were some of the most influential days of my life. I learned how to play guitar and sing after being taught the ropes by my good friend and fellow musician John Rolfe who was also from the Goldendale area. Bart had a teal ’71 Ford F-100, and the radio didn’t work, so we sang! We sang all the time. This is when my dreams really began to take shape. I was going to be a country singer in Nashville someday.
My friends also included Mike Beckstrand of Goldendale and Casey Arnold and Fred Steinbach from Glenwood, among so many others. We all rodeoed together, and like my buddies Tye, Tom, Jace, and Chad, they were good to me. They were real cowboys, and I was more of a wannabe cowboy, but they didn’t seem to care. They took this city slicker from Spokane into their circle and treated me as one of their own. And I was a pretty good chute dogger, winning the award for CJRA Champion in 1998. I also won the Most Inspirational Cowboy award and was given a handmade buckle by Ron Ferguson! This was a big deal to me. These were some of the best years of my life.
My life has been defined and directed by many moments, and I can confidently say many people helped me find my path. I did become a singer-songwriter in Nashville, and these days I make my living writing songs for Country radio. Much of the writing we songwriters do is about small towns and small town life, and for me, that’s Goldendale. It’s riding around in trucks listening to AC/ DC with Tye and Daisia; it’s working in the summer sun with Bart; it’s making the same circles around the town with Tom in his old Chevy waiting to see if someone we knew was out, and figuring out where we were going to go that night.
In many ways the town hasn’t changed, but many of the people I’ve mentioned are no longer there or only now in spirit. Ron unfortu-
nately passed many years ago due to a heart attack while riding in his truck. Tom passed away tragically in a snowmobile accident on Mt. Adams many years ago as well. And Tye and Jace, after many years of living with horrific Huntington’s Disease, are also gone, most recently with the passing of Jace. Though they are all gone, the memories of them are as fresh as the day they were made. I will forever remember them for who they were—young and full of life, with spirits too big
for the sky to hold.
If there were a window to my heart you could peek into, I imagine you would find pieces of my Grammy and Poppy’s ranch, a couple of rusted-out dirt bikes, a handmade buckle by Ron Ferguson, my Uncle Scott’s old Koffler drift boat, and the numbers 98620. Though I’m from Spokane and have lived in Nashville for the better part of 20 years, the place I long for the most in this world is Goldendale. Maybe it’s because it’s where my people are
from and where my deepest roots are, but I think it’s also because it’s where some of my best memories were made with some of the best friends I ever had. Though some of them are no longer there, their memories are, and until I make it back someday and call it home, it’ll never be far from mind in my simple four-chord songs, looking back on the good old days in Goldendale. Thank you to all who have welcomed me over the years and treated me as one of your own.

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY Goldendale Energy Storage Project Final Environmental Impact Statement
The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has completed and published the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) reviewing environmental impacts for the proposed Goldendale Energy Storage Project. Ecology considered over 1,700 public comments that were received during the public comment period before finalizing the document. Changes were made to the EIS as a result of comments. General responses to these comments are included as an appendix to the final EIS. There is no public comment period for this document.
Free Flow Power Project 101, LLC (FFP Project) proposes to build an energy storage system next to the Columbia River in Goldendale. The system would release water from an upper reservoir downhill to a lower reservoir to generate energy. Power produced would be provided to the electrical grid at the nearby John Day Substation in Oregon when other renewable sources, like wind and solar, are unavailable.
The final EIS is posted on Ecology’s website, ecology. wa.gov/Goldendale-Energy. Documents related to this project are available online and at the Ecology Central Region Office (1250 West Alder Street, Union Gap, WA 989030009).

It’s that time of year when lots of wrapping up happens. There is the literal wrapping up of toys, clothes, singing sh, decades-old fruit cakes passed back and forth between families like a football, and, of course, books. And then there is the traditional wrapping up of the year—2022 in this case—which results in the October to December ow of “favorites” and “best of” lists. Well, guess what? Here’s another one. I don’t want you, dear reader, to feel left out from the “best” and “favorite” crowd, so this is my version of a 2022 review/inventory. This week’s recommendations
are some of my favorite reads from 2022, but there were many, so keep in mind that 2022 was another great year for reading—and the library is here to help each and every reader.
I’ll be taking the rest of the year off column-wise, so that’s a wrap for me. Happy Holidays!

Mom’s Holiday Popcorn Mix
TAYLER BRADLEY FOR THE SENTINEL
The holidays can be a stressful time for so many people. We are running around trying to figure out the perfect gift for our friends or co-workers. In our family, instead of buying gifts, we make treats to share. It brings a sense of thoughtfulness to each one we give. Now, my mom makes some of the best sugar cookies, but don’t get your hopes up—I am not sure I want to reveal that secret recipe just yet. Mom also makes another treat she puts in holiday containers to share and that is her Holiday Popcorn Mix. It is full of salty sweet goodness that mixes opposites together perfectly. Everyone is always excited to receive this treat.
My help is always requested when mixing, so the popcorn gets totally covered and doesn’t get smashed. Mom pops the popcorn, gathers the goodies, and melts the chocolate. Over the years, she has perfected the ingredients and brands of products. Trust me, the brand and flavor does matter in this one. After it’s all done, she sets it out to cool and set up. This is usually when my family and I get yelled at because we sneak
by for a quick handful. I also get yelled at because I pick out only my favorite parts. It is such a yummy treat that I look forward to every year.
This year, I am not at home for the holidays, and I have thought about making the Holiday Popcorn Mix while here in Texas to share with my friends. It reminds me of home and all the times we spent making these yummy goodies. If you are looking for something to bring to a party or make for a gift, I encourage you to try this recipe; you may just find your new traditional holiday treat.
Mom’s Holiday Popcorn Mix You will need:
14 cups of popped popcorn (we usually get the stuff that comes in a jar)
3 cups of Rice Krispies
2 cups of peanuts or cashews (optional)
2 cups of M&Ms or Spice Drop candies
1 pound of almond bark (and yes, it tastes the best with almond bark.)
1. Put popcorn kernels in a large pot with some oil in the bottom, cover with a lid, and pop on the stove. If you use the bag popcorn, pop using instructions.
Measure out 14 cups of popcorn and put into a large mixing bowl.
2. Add candies, nuts, and Rice Krispies to the popcorn and mix.
3. In a double boiler, melt the almond bark enough to stir and drizzle but so it still coats the back of a spoon. You will have to stir off and on if you melt it in the microwave.
4. Pour melted almond bark over the popcorn mixture and stir. Be sure to stir gently enough so the popcorn doesn’t get smashed too much but you are still able to coat the pieces.
5. Spread mixture over waxed paper to cool and set up.
6. Once it is set, break apart and place into holly dishes or goodie bags.

Recipe for Christmas
I don’t consider myself a person bound by tradition.
Usually, I’m all about change, encouraging people to change and looking for ways to change myself. I generally think that new experiences make life both more memorable and meaningful.
Except for Christmas. I want Christmas to remain exactly the same.
Nearly every year of my life, Christmas Eve has been celebrated with my father and his family. My dad has only one sister, my Auntie Jo, so this has been relatively easy. My father and his sister each had two children, and I am the oldest, so the logistics remained simple.
But this year, logistics finally caught up with us, and I will celebrate with my parents and my sister and her family. Auntie Jo’s family will have their own celebration, and at my age, I should be incredibly grateful that the tradition held as long as it did.
Instead, I’m a little sad.
If you read advice columns at this time of year (and I do), you know they are filled with families feuding over where to spend Christmas. The more distant and strained the family relations are, the more fiercely they fight. I read these columns every year and tut-tut along with the advice giver, and yet I take for granted that my Christmas will remain unchanged. I like to imagine that—while everything in the world changes—Christmas somehow magically remains the same.
“I’m sad!” I told my mother when she told me the news.
“I know,” my mom said. “But things change.” Of course, my mother is right.
Hanging onto Christmas traditions is important. Letting them go is even more so.
Things change, and that is not a good thing or a bad thing. It is simply what happens if you are lucky enough to live as long as I have lived. It is asking too much of Christmas to hold all the relationships and all the changes. It is asking too much of one short day.
Instead, on the 26th of December, we will get together for a brunch. My Auntie Jo is hosting, so I know it will be wonderful. Everyone will be there, and no one will be worried that they are neglecting some other part of the family or that they will have to rush to another Christmas event. We will chat and eat all the cookies we want (because what else are you going to do with Christmas cookies on the 26th of December except eat them?) And it will be something new.
“Hey, Sister,” I said. “When are we going to make Christmas cookies?”
We made Christmas cookies together last year for the first time. We both mixed a huge amount of dough, and we made a giant mess of her kitchen and put her son to work minding the oven and her daughter sprinkling sugar, and we ended up with an amazing pile of cookies.
This was how Christmas traditions survive— not by hanging onto one special thing, but by making new special moments. This tradition, now two years old, is part of Christmas. My job is to treat it with all the respect a two-year-old tradition requires—to honor it and celebrate it and make it the best day possible.
“Where did you get this recipe?” my mother asked, trying one of our cookies.
“From you!” I told her.
And it’s true. I got the recipe for Christmas from my mother, and my father, and my Auntie Jo. Now all I have to do is to remember to make it on my own every year.

Christmas Smartyfacts
Because of the equator and the way the world rotates around the sun it is summer in the southern hemisphere. What?? South of the equator it is summer. North of the equator it’s winter. While we are looking forward to a white Christmas in the Northern hemisphere it is one of the hottest months of the year in Australia. While Christmas is a Christian holiday it is celebrated in many different ways, and in many different places around the world. It is because of this that there are many facts about this holiday that you may not know.
Santa and time travel go hand in hand. How does the Jolly Old Elf make it around the world in one day? The math is pretty complicated on this one. It is estimated that around 200 billion children live on earth. Those children live in about 800 million different houses. By using the time zones on earth, and beginning at the international date line, Santa is able to stretch one day into about 42 hours. Even with the extra time added in, scientists have tried and there is no explanation according to them. No explanation other than pure magic. Only magic could allow anyone or anything to travel 1,367 miles per second!
Where the first Christmas tree came from and who made it popular are two very different things. Christmas trees today are traditionally coniferous evergreens. Evergreen plants have had special meaning for thousands of years. They have always represented eternal life. As Christianity spread throughout the world, evergreen plants were used in religious rituals to represent the eternal life Jesus’ birth and eternal life promised to mankind. Decorating an actual tree was first done in Germany. The early trees were decorated with cookies, apples, pinecones and candles. The British Princess Charlotte of Wales married a German prince named Leopold. She was the first to decorate, and light a tree in a British castle. German migrants brought the Christmas tree to America but the English Puritans thought that decorating for Christmas made fun of a serious event. In 1659 there were laws passed that put people in jail for decorating for the holiday. For more than 100 years the festive trees and other decorations were illegal. Edward H. Johnson, a friend of Thomas Edison, hung the first electric lights on a tree in 1882.
Christmas music can be heard playing everywhere you go around the world. They are called songs or carols. Both words describe all songs. The word carol first comes from the 1300s. It was used to describe joyous music and dances that were performed at festivals. In the 1500s the word carol began being used to describe songs that were sung to celebrate the Christmas holidays. At that time these were songs sung in church to celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus. Today we use the word universally to describe all of the music of the holiday season. Worldwide the most played carol is Silent Night. In the last 40 years it has been recorded by more than 700 different singers.

Athlete Spotlight: Cameron Groves
TAYLER BRADLEY FOR THE SENTINEL
The Timberwolf Boys Basketball team has started their season off with a bang. Each person on the team has played very well, and one of those players happens to be junior guard Cameron Groves, who has shown us some great things so far. He is a returning player from last year and one of the older, experienced players.
The boys have played only a few games so far due to some bad weather, but it hasn’t slowed them down
“The start of the season was a little rough,” Cameron declared. “We dealt with a lot of adversity but have battled through it.” It
just goes to show how strong a player he is and how he helps lead younger players through the ups and downs. He wouldn’t be the player he is today without all of the time, effort, and practice he has put in over the years. Ever since he was in the second grade, those skills have been developing with each and every coach, game, and shot taken.
Why did Cameron choose to play basketball? Well, for one reason, he loves the game and the comradery that comes with the team he is on. The team has been playing together for a long time, through school sports and summer leagues. Everyone contributes in some way. “This team plays so
well together because we trust each other on the court,” he said. These boys have such a bond that before every game they all get together, listen to music, get hyped up, and pray together. The team bonding is super important to Cameron, and it helps him get ready to play his very best. He also shared with us that if they win a game, they have a tradition of playing the song “Gangnam Style.” He really loves the Timberwolf team and all they share together.
Cameron looks forward to playing Riverview (in Duvall, Washington) this season. “They knocked us out of districts last year,” he stated, “and I feel like we need a redemption game.”
Cameron is a three-sport athlete, as he also plays football and baseball. He gets good grades and is also part of the Math Club, National Honor Society, and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). We love seeing athletes who are also great, well-rounded students. After asking Cameron what NBA player he would most like to be out on the court with, he answered, “Kobe Bryant. He was such an influential player and had a great work ethic.”
Now that you know a little bit about Cameron, be sure to come out to the Wolves’ next home game and cheer him on.
Weekly Recap Boys Basketball
TAYLER BRADLEY FOR THE SENTINEL
The Timberwolves finally got to play a full week of games. Each of the boys were ready to show us what they could do together on the court. Head Coach David Stelljes has done a great job working with this team and preparing them for every match up. Their fi rst game was against Stevenson on the Wolves’ own home court.
Timberwolf Girls Basketball
AUDREY HILL FOR THE SENTINEL
The Girls Timberwolf Basketball team has been working hard the past couple of weeks, kicking off league play last week. Last Thursday the 16th they played against the Granger Spartans, followed by another league game Saturday against the Highland Scotties.
Thursday the Timberwolves crushed the Spartans with a fi nal score of
50-38. The Timberwolves then maintained their winning streak on Saturday with another victory over the Highland Scotties for a score of 59-9.
The Timberwolves will not play again until the new year. Friday, January 6, they will kick off 2023 with an away game against Cle Elum Roslyn, followed by a home game Saturday, January 7, against White Swan. The game is set to begin at 6 pm.
The gym fi lled up for this non-league match, and the home crowd was ready to cheer on their team no matter what the outcome would be at the fi nal buzzer. The Wolves got off to a little bit of a slow start, as they were only able to put 11 points up on the board compared to Stevenson’s 16. Josh Boe scored 6 of those 11, which was a great start to his night, and he would carry that momentum through the rest of the game. In the second quarter, Stevenson
played their best game, keeping the lead. The score at the end of the fi rst half was Goldendale 25 and Stevenson 33. The Wolves usually come out strong after a little regrouping during halftime, and it showed in this game too. They closed the gap and continued to work for the lead. Though they fought hard for the win, they fell a little short to a very strong Stevenson team. Final score was 51-61, a tough loss for the boys. They didn’t have a lot of time to dwell on it, though, because they had two more games to play. Friday they traveled to Granger for their fi rst league game of the season. These boys were bound and determined to have a great game, and it showed right away. They came out with a bang in the fi rst quarter, scoring 21 points. It was a big lead, as Granger only scored 13.
In quarter number two, both teams fought back a little harder and played
great defense. Goldendale was still able to keep their lead going into half-time.
Granger trailed 6 points, and the Wolves weren't going to let go of the lead at all. The tough defense for both teams continued through the third quarter, and it was the lowest scoring quarter of the game. Goldendale still held on to their lead. That hard work paid off for them in the last quarter as they outscored Granger for the fourth time of the night, which helped them secure their welldeserved win. Final score 60-54.
Saturday the boys did not have to travel and had the advantage of a home crowd. They were matched up against Highland in Cowiche. This was their second league game of the season, and after coming off of a great win the night before, the boys were looking for win number two.
Highland had a rough start to their season, and the
Timberwolves didn’t make it any easier on them. A game of great defense and controlled offense made this a quick and easy win for Goldendale. They had no problems getting around Highland and scoring more than double their opponents. Win number two is now in the books for the Timberwolves, with a fi nal score 55-23.
We are so proud of these boys every time they step out on the court. Each of these players work hard to give their teammates their very best efforts. The boys have fi nally gotten a groove going, and we would love to see that carry on through the rest of the season. They will have a little time off for Winter Break, but you can bet they will still be getting time on the court to prepare for their fi rst game back, which will be on January 6 against Cle Elum. Have a great break, boys. We look forward to seeing you play again soon!

A Christmas Story
My favorite thing about Christmas is when my whole family gets together and I get to see all of them and then we open presents and play board games. I usually win but other times I lose. Then comes dinner. My nana makes the best food in the world. It’s so good I get more even If I’m full. Then we have dessert but I don’t eat that much. Too much sugar makes me sick and I have a tummy ache so I only eat a little and that is my Christmas.

Then we wait on the couch next to the presents until they get up. Finally they get up and then we get to open the presents!

The Story of Santa Claus Once upon a time there lived a young man named Claus. He lived in a hut in a forest. He loved making children happy. One day when he had plenty of firewood, he took a piece of wood and started to carve. He carved a little reindeer. He did not know what to do with it because toys did not exist at that time. Then he heard a call for help. He went outside. He saw a kid stuck in the snow. “Pete?” he said. He pulled Pete out of the snow. Claus looked everywhere for Pete’s parents but he could not find them, so he took Pete in. He gave Pete the little Reindeer. Pete started to laugh. After 62 long years Claus had made tons of toys. He had 8 reindeer that’s pulled a big red sleigh. It was almost time for Christmas so Claus took off . “HoHoHo” you could hear in the night.
Sincerely, Hank
A little reindeer named Roodoff lived in the North Pole, but he is not the main character of this
It is his friend. He is named Randy. He is cool. But one day he was caught. Roodoff woke by the sound of guns. Randy was in a net in the truck. “Roodoff!” he yelled. But roodoof took them out in a second, he takes randy out of the net and they go inside. They huddled up by the fire and had some warm cookies and milk.
Sincerely, Gracie
Rudolf the red nose reindeer Once upon a time Santa was in his sleigh. He just learned how to ride his sleigh. He found a reindeer, he was very special. Santa named him Rudolf. Santa loved the reindeers but he loved Rudolf the most. Every night Santa would have Rudolf pull his sleigh. But one night on Christmas Eve he rode to the last house and lived happily ever after.
Sincerely, Melodie
