Pioneer Pal Day celebrates Native traditions If you drove by the Presby House Museum Friday, August 6, you probably noticed a beautiful teepee set up on the front lawn. The George family generously shared the family teepee to help celebrate the Sixth Annual Pioneer Pal Day, sponsored by the Klickitat County Historical Society (KCHS) and co-coordinated by Susan Marlow, Luann Whitmire, and Eddie George III. The KCHS, in its continuing endeavor to preserve local history, develops a program every summer to provide children the opportunity to experience and understand

GETTING READY: Top, Ella Riley with her lamb, Melmom, getting ready for the Fair. Above, Joslyn Arnold preps her steer.
TAYLER BRADLEY FOR THE SENTINEL Fair week is here, and all the fun is about to begin! These kids have been working hard for months to prepare their animals for show. Last week we met two kids who have put a lot of work into their animals and their projects. And they are not the only ones out there working this hard. They will be competing alongside many others as well. Ella Riley got her lamb, Melmon, in June. She will show Melmon in showmanship class but also in the market class to sell him in the market sale. To prepare for market she has been feeding him alfalfa daily along with a high protein grain to keep him full and help to make him a great weight to sell. Ella also took him to weekly show practices, took him on daily walks, and made sure to give him lots of attention at home. Along with her record book, Ella also did her educational poster on “Fun Facts about Sheep.” Ella is ready for the Fair this year; she says, “I am excited for Fair, especially since we didn’t have one last year. I love getting to see lots of people and friends who I hav-
en’t got to see over the summer.” Joslyn Arnold is also ready for this week’s activities. She will show her steer in market class and in the senior showman class. Joslyn picked out her steer in October and started feeding him to help him grow and gain weight. She made sure to weigh him at least once a month to make sure he was on track and adjusted the feed as needed. Working with him daily, she made sure he is trailer-ready and of course practiced showing him so he walks into the show ring ready to go. She is very ready for the Fair: she says, “I look forward to Fair each year. All of the time and dedication to our animals gets to be celebrated.” Both of these girls—and of course all of the other kids who have raised animals over the past months—are ready to show off their work. They have worked hard with their animals, their educational posters, and of course their record books. Be sure to come out and support them this week. They will all be participating in showmanship class, and many will be selling their animals in the market sale this Saturday. We’ll see you there!
