Concours Corner Hello, Porsche owners and enthusiasts. It seems like the winter that never came is about to end and spring is here, which means it’s time for the annual Gold Coast Spring Fling Picnic and Concours d’Elegance held at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Sunday, March 25th. There are always lots of cars, family fun, and friends, along with good food from our grille. With so many car aficionados in south Florida and various car shows around the state, the Concours interest continues to grow, and we look forward to this spring’s Porsche-only event to be one of our best events. Anyone can enter, win or loose. It’s always fun and a learning experience. Whether you are a serious Concours participant or just want to see how your car stacks up against similar models, we encourage you to sign up – it’s free! Because of limited time and the 5 categories to judge, the maximum cars we can handle is capped at 50, which means 10 cars per category. It’s on a first-comefirst-served basis, so sign up early by

emailing Beena at browardsocial@gmail. com All we need is your model and year. The categories will be as follows: All 356 in one grouping, all the year models from 1965-1977, followed by the 1990 – 1998, the last year of the air-cooled cars. Lastly, any model from 1999 though the current year. I know what you are thinking; how can this be fair if I have an older car or a high mileage car? A bonus point system is in place to allow the older cars and cars with high mileage to compete and be rewarded, similar to a handicap in golf. The Concours rules will be posted in the Gold Coast PCA web site, and we encourage you to look them over and begin planning. Trophies will be awarded for 1st – 3rd places and we expect new winners to emerge. In the recent past, our local events have been held with a major emphasis in the PCA National Rules under the Preparation Class. This Class has a major emphasis on the “cleanliness” of the car and has been excellent training in helping us prepare for a car show. While Cleanliness is paramount to any car show, there are many other attributes about a car that should be judged. Some have participated with

wonderful cars that didn’t win because of the Preparation rules. While Preparation will still be important, this coming Concours will also judge originality and presentation, as well as cleanliness. As we progress and the interest continues to grow, we are becoming more of a real Concours d’Elegance. This will mean our cars can compete in any serious car show in the state, like our PCA Zone 12 ZoneFest coming up in Vero Beach in April. Or even national events where multiple manufacturers are involved. Who knows, we may even produce Amelia Island and Pebble Beach winners! I know there is at least one local member participating in the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance this year. I wish it were I, but it is not. Amelia Island is the top and most prestigious car show in the eastern United States. Try to attend if you can. Why go through all, this you ask? Well, besides the fun and the sport of the competition, it doesn’t hurt the value of your car one bit if you ever sell or move to another model or project. As an owner of multiple cars and wins, I can attest that your car will sell fast and for top dollar.
