n el pasado no era costumbre, pero hoy en día es la tónica. Cada vez más padres se están involucrado en las escuelas de sus hijos. Y es que las investigaciones han demostrado que cuando un progenitor tiene una cuota de participación impacta de manera positiva a sus hijos y al colegio.

Al interactuar habitualmente con docentes, administradores y otros padres, conocerá de primera mano las actividades diarias de su hijo. También sacará provecho de las tendencias y modas de la vida escolar que pueden ayudarlo a comunicarse con sus hijos a medida que crecen y cambian.

Tatiana Cabrera es una de los miles de padres voluntarios en las escuelas del sistema escolar de Miami Dade. El debut lo hizo cuando su hija inició el pre-k, con el interés de estar al tanto de lo que sucedía en el aula de su pequeña, lo repitió con su segundo hijo y es si como hoy en día lleva casi 10 años como voluntaria.

Si su horario se lo permite, busque maneras para ayudar en la escuela. Frecuentemente se necesitan voluntarios que puedan: - Acompañar a los estudiantes en los viajes de estudios o los bailes.

- Preparar comida para algún evento escolar.

- Colaborar como tutor de estudiantes en la lectura, las matemáticas, el inglés, el español, computación, u otros cursos.

- Ayudar como voluntario en la cafetería, en la biblioteca, en la clase de su hijo, o en la oficina escolar.

- Ayudar en los proyectos como el boletín escolar.

En caso de que su trabajo u otros compromisos le impidan ser voluntario busque formas de ayudar en la casa. Por ejemplo, usted podría traducir el boletín de la escuela del inglés a otro idioma o hacer llamadas a los otros padres para avisarles sobre alguna actividad escolar.

Otra opción puede ser unirse a la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA) o a un comité asesor de padres.

Recuerde si no se ha involucrado en el pasado, nunca es tarde para empezar.

Beneficios de la participación • Los hijos de los padres que se involucran obtienen mejores calificaciones y mayor puntaje en los exámenes.

• Asisten a la escuela con mayor regularidad.

• Cuentan con mejores habilidades.

Interacting regularly with teachers, administrators and other parents, you will know firsthand the daily activities of your child. Also, you can take advantage of the trends and fashions of school life that can help you communicate with your children while they grow and change.

Parental Involvement Makes a Difference Tatiana Cabrera.

Tatiana Cabrera is one of the thousands of parents volunteering in the schools of Miami Dade County. She did her volunteer debut when her daughter started pre-kindergarten.

She had interest in what was happening in her small child’s classroom. She did the same with her second child, and as of today she has been volunteering for nearly ten years.

"No matter from which part of the world they come, parents can always make their contributions to schools. If you participate, you know what is happening in the school. That enables you to be a better advocate for your child, and

you are also telling your children that education has value and that it is important to you,” said Cabrera.

If your schedule allows it, look for ways to help in the school where volunteers are frequently needed to do the following: - Accompany students on field trips or dances.

- Prepare food for school events.

Collaborate by tutoring students in reading, mathematics, English, Spanish, computer and/or other courses.

- Help as a volunteer in the cafeteria, in the library, in your child's class, or in the school’s main office.

- Help in projects such as the school newsletter.

When your job or other commitments prevent you from volunteering, search for ways to help at home. For example, you can translate the school’s bulletin from English to another language, make phone calls to parents to let them know about school activities.

Another option may be to join the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or a parents’ advisory committee.

Remember: if you have not been involved in your children’s schools, it is never too late to start.

Benefits of School Participation The following are some benefits that student have when their parents are involved in their schools: • Get better grades and higher scores in the exams.

• Attend school regularly.

• Have better social skills.

• Complete their school tasks on time • Have a positive attitude toward school.

• Are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education.

H

ay dos realidades contundentes que las personas no pueden olvidar acerca del cáncer. La primera es que nadie esta inmune a padecerlo, y la segunda es que debemos ser conscientes de sus síntomas para detectarlo a tiempo.

Hace poco más de un año, la familia Coronell vivió en carne propia estas dos situaciones. Su hija de apenas 16 años fue diagnosticada con leucemia, noticia que ningún padre quisiera recibir.

A pesar de que el tratamiento tiene sus problemas y es difícil lidiar con los síntomas de los efectos secundarios, esta joven sorprendió a muchos con su actitud frente a la enfermedad.

Con una hermosa sonrisa en su rostro, Raquel, quien actualmente cursa el 11 grado en la escuela Ransom Everglades, dejó de lado por un momento sus actividades y compromisos para sentarse y relatarnos a lo que se ha enfrentado durante este tiempo.

Para asimilar lo que le estaba pasando y encarar las reacciones de algunas personas quienes aún continúan pensando que la enfermedad es un castigo o incluso se trata de 12 | Octubre 2016 | Go! Latinos

una simple gripe, debió conocer que es el cáncer. “La gente tiene que entender que no es inmune y que deben estar alerta”. El cáncer no discrimina, no importa si uno es bueno, religioso, saludable, a cualquier persona y en cualquier momento puede pasarle”. Incluso según ella nos cuenta gozaba de una excelente salud hasta ese momento, ya que siempre se había mantenido activa practicando deportes como la natación y el tenis.

Esta adolescente colombiana con apenas 5 años de residir en este país y amante de la arepa venezolana, asombró no solo a su familia sino al personal del hospital con la actitud positiva que tomó frente a las circunstancias. Esta postura fue la lección de vida que dio a sus padres quienes se encontraban devastados ante la noticia.

“Ella fue la que nos animó, nos repetía que íbamos a salir adelante y que todo se iba a solucionar. Y las enfermeras siempre la vieron sonriente a pesar del tratamiento y sus efectos secundarios”, explicó María Cristina Coronell, mamá de Raquel.

La segunda realidad que enfrentó esta familia fue un diagnóstico a tiempo. Al mo-

mento de la detección, el oncólogo manifestó que probablemente no tenía más de diez días la enfermedad. Hoy en día, los estudios revelan que existe un buen pronóstico cuando el cáncer se determina en su fase inicial.

Una mañana esta joven, quien toca la guitarra como pasatiempo favorito, palpó unos ganglios inflamados en su cuello y axila, incluso su piel a la altura de la nariz presentaba una mancha, la cual atribuyó a una sombra de sol producto de su entrenamiento riguroso de tenis y que más tarde se daría cuenta que se trataba de uno de los síntomas del cáncer.

No había fiebre ni dolores, por lo que su madre no iba a llevarla inmediatamente al pediatra. “Recuerdo que ese día llame a mi padre a Colombia, quien es médico y le comenté lo que le pasaba a Raquel y a él no le gustaron estos síntomas y me insistió que no debía esperar ni un minuto más para que la viera un doctor.

Si no hubiera sido por su insistencia a lo mejor yo hubiera esperado a ver si tenía algún otro síntoma que yo creyera que era pertinente ponerle atención”.

Y es que es común que los padres desconozcan y confundan los síntomas del cáncer y los interpreten, en la mayoría de las ocasiones, como dolencias infantiles comunes.

Según el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer (NCI por sus siglas en inglés), el cáncer sigue siendo la causa principal de muerte de los niños, aunque los índices de mortalidad por cáncer infantil han bajado casi un 70 por ciento en las últimas cuatro décadas.

Hoy en día Raquel, cuyo principal don que la caracteriza es su sensibilidad y preocupación por los demás, ha retomado nuevamente sus estudios, luego de pasar un año intenso dedicado exclusivamente al tratamiento, porque según ella misma nos dice “para mi es importante el colegio, pero mi prioridad es asegurarme de estar saludable y que el tratamiento marche bien”.

Y este período escolar 2016-2017 no solo alterna su tratamiento con sus estudios, sino que está preparándose para tomar los exámenes de las universidades porque su gran sueño es llegar a ser una doctora como su abuelo.

here are two compelling, unforgettable realities about cancer. The first is that no one is immune to it, and the second is that we must be aware of its symptoms to detect it early.

Little more than a year ago, the Coronell family lived those two situations firsthand.

Their 16-year-old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, news that no parent would like to receive.

While cancer treatment has complications and difficult side effects, this young woman surprised many with her attitude toward the disease.

With a beautiful smile, Raquel, who is currently attending the 11th grade at Ransom Everglades, put aside for a moment her activities and commitments to sit and tell us what she faced during her struggle with cancer.

To assimilate what was happening and to face the reactions of some people who still think that the disease is a punishment or as simple as a flu, she had to learn what cancer was all about. "People have to understand that they are not immune, and that they should be alert. Cancer does not discriminate; it does not matter if one is good, religious, or healthy; it can happen to any person at any time." She even told us that at the time of her diagnosis, she enjoyed excellent health because she had always been active swimming and pla-

ying tennis.

The Colombian teen, who has been living in this country for just five years and loves Venezuelan arepas, surprised not only her family but also the hospital staff with her positive attitude under the circumstances. Her stance was a life lesson to her parents, who had been devastated by the news.

"She was the one who encouraged us, repeated to us that we were going to move forward and that everything was going to be fine.” The nurses saw her smiling always despite the treatment and its side effects,” explained Raquel’s mother, Maria Cristina Coronell.

The second reality that this family faced was that the illness was diagnosed in time. At the time of detection, the oncologist said that probably she had had the illness for no more than ten days. Today, studies show that there is a good prognosis when the cancer is diagnosed in its initial stage.

One morning Raquel, whose favorite pastime is playing guitar, felt that her lymph nodes in her neck and armpits were swollen. She also had a spot in the skin near her nose, which she attributed to the exposure to the sun during rigorous tennis training. Later she learned that was one of the symptoms of cancer.

There was no fever or headache; therefore,

her mother did not take her to the pediatrician immediately. Her mother said, "I remember that day I called my father in Colombia. He is a medical doctor and when I told him what was happening to Raquel, he did not like the symptoms, He insisted that we should not wait, not even a minute to take her to the doctor.” If it had not been for his insistence, I would have probably waited to see if she had any other symptoms."

It is common for parents to be unaware and confused about the symptoms of cancer and mistake them, in the majority of cases, for other childhood ailments.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer remains the leading cause of death among children, although childhood cancer mortality rates have dropped almost 70 percent over the past four decades.

Today Raquel, whose main gifts are compassion and concern for others, has resumed her studies after spending an intense year exclusively dedicated to the treatment.

She told us "for me school is important, but my priority is to make sure I stay healthy and my treatment goes well.”

During this 2016-2017 school year, she is going to alternate her treatment with her studies, and she is also going to prepare to take university exams because her dream is to become a doctor like her grandfather.

i usted es un bombero, militar, maestro, policía, paramédico, doctor o enfermera y además quiere comprar, vender o refinanciar la casa le traemos excelentes noticias.

Desde hace 14 años existe un programa a nivel nacional que ayuda a los héroes de nuestra comunidad a economizar dinero al momento de comprar una casa.

A lo mejor usted no había escuchado de él, se trata de Homes for Heroes, un proyecto que nació después de los atentados del 11 de Septiembre del 2001, y cuya misión es proveer sorprendentes ahorros a héroes que facilitan extraordinariamente servicio a nuestra nación y comunidades cada día.

Homes for Heroes, establecida en Minneapolis, Minnesota en el año 2002, es la mayor red nacional en afiliar a especialistas en bienes raíces, oficiales de préstamos, compañías profesionales de títulos de propiedad e inspectores de casas.

Aquellos especialistas de bienes raíces afiliados a Homes for Heroes donan un 30 por ciento de sus comisiones. De esa porción el 25 por ciento va directamente al comprador en forma de descuento o reembolso que recibirán una vez que firmen los gastos de cierre, y el otro 5 por ciento a la Fundación Homes for Heroes, organización sin fines de lucro, que provee asistencia financiera a personal militar (activo, en reserva y veteranos) y héroes en caso de que no puedan pagar sus casas o incluso para gastos médicos.

Lo interesante de la iniciativa es que puede trabajar conjuntamente con alguno otro beneficio estatal o del condado que la persona pueda recibir.

En la actualidad hay más de 2 mil especialistas de bienes raíces afiliados a nivel nacional cuyos reembolsos a los compradores han sido superiores a los 16 millones de dólares, cifra que continúa en crecimiento. Entre tanto, en el 2015 en la Florida se ayudaron a 288 héroes lo que significó un ahorro de más de 400 mil dólares.

No obstante, Homes for Heroes funciona en el Sur de la Florida desde el 2015, con la incorporación de tres corredores de bienes raíces que abrieron camino para que maestros, bomberos y policías pudieran ser partícipes del programa. Hoy en día ya hay 18 afiliados.

“Aunque no es un programa nuevo, realmente para las personas de Miami lo es porque no han oído hablar de él, ni cómo funciona. Este ha sido nuestro trabajo informar a la población para que hagan uso de este beneficio y motivar a más colegas a que se afilien”, comentó Vivian Guerra de YES Real Estate Services, quien junto a su equipo han logrado durante este año asistir a 7 héroes, generando más de 10 mil dólares en ahorros.

Recuerde si va a comprar o vender una casa asegúrese que su corredor de bienes raíces, el oficial de crédito e inspector de casas estén afiliados al programa, de esta manera se estará cerciorando de recibir los beneficios anteriormente descritos.

f you are a firefighter, soldier, teacher, police officer, paramedic, nurse or a doctor and want to buy, sell or refinance your house, we bring you great news.

There is a national program that was established 14 years ago that helps heroes of our community save money when they buy a house.

Perhaps you may not have heard of it, but it is Homes for Heroes, a project that was established after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and its mission is to provide great savings to the heroes who serve our nation and our communities every day.

Homes for Heroes, established in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2002, is the largest national network with affiliated specialists in real estate: loan officers, property title companies and professional home inspectors.

Those specialists in real estate who are affiliated to Homes for Heroes donate 30% of their commissions. Of that portion 25% goes directly to the buyers in the form of discounts or reimbursements once the closing costs are signed. The other 5% goes to the Foundation Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit organization which provides financial assistance to military personnel (active, reserve and veterans) and heroes when they cannot pay for their houses or for medical expenses.

For example, if you are going to buy a house for $250,000, you can get a refund of $1,750; in case the

property costs $350,000, your savings will be $2,450.

The interesting thing about the initiative is that it can work together with any other state and/ or county benefits that the person may be eligible to receive.

Currently there are more than 2,000 real estate brokers affiliated nationwide and the refunds to buyers have totaled over $16 million, a figure that continues to grow.

Meanwhile in 2015, 288 heroes were helped in Florida with savings of more than $400,000.

Homes for Heroes has been in South Florida since 2015, with the incorporation of three real estate brokers that opened the program so teachers, firefighters and policemen could participate in the program. Today there are 18 affiliates.

"Although the program is not new, it is new for many people in Miami who have not heard of it or do not know how it works. Our job has been to inform the population to make sure they take advantage of the benefits and also encourage more colleagues to join," commented Vivian Guerra from YES Real Estate Services. Along with her team, she has assisted seven heroes, generating more than $10,000 in savings.

Remember if you are buying or selling your house, make sure that your real estate broker, loan officer and house inspector are affiliated to the program so you can receive the benefits mentioned above.

uando se habla del tiempo que una persona debe dedicar al ejercicio, 30 minutos al día o de 150 minutos semanales, es poco de acuerdo a las recomendaciones internacionales que dicen cómo hacerlo y la forma de adaptarlo a la edad de cada quien.

El Centro de Prevención y Control de Enfermedades de Estados Unidos (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés), publicó unas guías que detallan las actividades físicas dependiendo de la edad de las personas.

Según los autores, dichas pautas son recomendaciones generales que, en cierta medida pueden aplicarse a todas las personas, aunque en muchas ocasiones dependerá de la condición física de la persona y de su relación anterior con el deporte, especialmente cuando se habla de los adolescentes y adultos.

De 6 a 17 años. El CDC aconseja que los niños y adolescentes hagan al menos 60 minutos de actividad física al día, debido a los cambios fisiológicos en esas etapas. Puede incluir actividad moderada como caminar rápido o andar en bicicleta; pero se recomienda que, unas tres veces por semana, el menor realice actividad más vigorosa, como correr.

Sin embargo, a estas edades, no se recomiendan los ejercicios para fortalecer los músculos, aunque sí pueden hacerse abdominales unas tres veces por semana. Y será en la adolescencia donde las “lagartijas” o push-ups , pueden incorporarse poco a poco. Asi-

mismo, se mencionan los ejercicios para fortalecer los huesos, como brincar suiza y jugar fútbol.

De 18 a 64 años. Se sugieren 150 minutos semanales (dos horas y media). Estos pueden dividirse a lo largo de la semana, siempre y cuando cada sesión tenga una duración mínima de 10 minutos.

La guía brinda la posibilidad de hacer 75 minutos (una hora y 15 minutos) de ejercicio cardiovascular (jugar baloncesto o fútbol, correr o andar en bicicleta) y los restantes 75 minutos, repartirlos en dos días más de fortalecimiento muscular usando ligas, pesas o ejercicios como “lagartijas”.

Adultos mayores. La actividad física les ayudará a tener menos enfermedades o lesiones, o a recuperarse más fácilmente de estas. Esta guía aconseja 150 minutos semanales de actividad entre moderada e intensa, lo cual dependerá de su condición física. Estos minutos pueden distribuirse en varias sesiones durante la semana. El único requerimiento es que la sesión más corta sea de al menos diez minutos.

En caso de que usted sufra algún tipo de lesión o enfermedad, será necesario que consulte a su médico y a un profesional, para elegir correctamente el tipo de ejercicio que le conviene realizar.

Recuerde que, sin importar su edad, el ejercicio disminuirá el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades cardiovasculares, así como tumores de mama, colon, estómago y pulmón.

Age Matters When It Comes to Exercising

hen one talks about the time that a person should spend doing exercise as 30 minutes per day or 150 minutes per week, that may be too little per the international recommendations that stipulate how to do it and how to adapt according to the age of each person.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published guidelines detailing physical activities depending on age.

According to the authors, those guidelines are general recommendations that to a certain extent may apply to all persons; however, it depends on the physical condition of the person and how many sports are practiced, especially when talking about teenagers and adults.

From 6 to 17 years. The CDC advised that, due to physiological changes

at those ages, children and teenagers do at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. It may include moderate activity such as brisk walking or biking.

It also recommended that about three times per week minors do a more strenuous activity like running.

However, at that age, exercises to strengthen the muscles are not recommended, but children can do abdominals about three times a week. During adolescence, they can do push-ups and gradually incorporate exercises to strengthen the bones, such as jumping rope and playing soccer.

From 18 to 64 years. Suggested time is 150 minutes per week (two and a half hours). Time can be divided throughout the week, provided that each session has a minimum duration of ten minutes.

The guide provides the possibility to do 75 minutes (one hour and 15 minu-

tes) of cardiovascular exercise (playing basketball, soccer, running, or biking), and the remaining 75 minutes, divided into two days with muscle strengthening using elastic bands, free weights or doing push-ups.

Older adults. Physical activity will help them stay healthy and be less prone to diseases or injuries. In the event that they suffer any of those, the recovery will be faster. The guide recommends 150 minutes per week from moderate to intense activity, depending on their physical condition.

Those minutes can be distributed over multiple sessions during the week. The only requirement is that the shorter session be at least ten minutes’ duration.

Esto representó aproximadamente el 17.5 por ciento de la población total de los Estados Unidos.

La comunidad Hispana y Latina sigue haciendo un fuerte impacto en el mundo. El mes nacional de la Her e n c i a Hispana celebra el impacto y los roles que los hispanos juegan y han jugado a lo largo de la historia.

El mes nacional de la Herencia Hispana comenzó en 1968 durante la presidencia de Lyndon Johnson, cuando el presidente y el congreso designaron una semana para celebrar la Herencia Hispana. Pew Research Center indicates that the Hispanic population in the United States reached a new high of 55.4 million in 2014. That accounted for roughly 17.5 percent of the total population of the United States.

The Hispanic and Latino community continues to make a strong impact across the globe.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates that impact and the roles Hispanics play today and have played throughout history.

National Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson, when the president and the U.S. Congress designated a week to celebrate Hispanic heritage. In 1988, it was expanded to a month-long observation, and National Hispanic Heritage Month was officially enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. It honors those peoples who emigrated from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America in particular. However, many people who identify as Latino but do not come from these countries also

celebrate this time of year.

Hispanic Heritage Month began under President Lyndon Johnson, who recognized how Hispanic and Latino people helped shape the nation. The week of celebration began on September 15, which is an important date in Hispanic history. Los rayos y la seguridad en los deportes al aire libre:

¡Cuando se oyen truenos no más juego!

o más probable es que dondequiera que viva el clima puede cambiar sin mucho aviso especialmente en los meses de primavera y verano. Las tempestades y los rayos pueden ocurrir sin mucho aviso. Si su niño está jugando o practicando en condiciones climáticas que no son las ideales, debe estar al tanto de los posibles peligros y tener preparado un plan con antelación.

Datos y estadísticas básicas sobre los rayos • No tiene que estar lloviendo para que caigan rayos.

• Todas las tempestades producen rayos. Si oye truenos, la tempestad está lo suficientemente cerca para que caigan rayos.

• Los rayos pueden causar muerte o discapacidad permanente. De acuerdo con el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (NWS, por sus siglas en inglés), más de 400 personas son alcanzadas por rayos todos los años con un promedio de 49 muertes.

• El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional informó que el 17% de las muertes a causa de rayos entre el 2006 t el 2013 ocurrieron durante actividades deportivas y recreativas al aire libre. Entre estos deportes están el fútbol (soccer), el golf, el atletismo, el béisbol, y el fútbol americano, en orden de importancia.

Los rayos y los consejos de seguridad en los deportes de la AAP Aunque nuestro mensaje de salir al aire libre y disfrutar la naturaleza y promover la actividad física es inquebrantable, la declaración de política de la American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): Béisbol y bola suave (softball), le recomienda a los entrenadores y funcionarios permanecer alerta sobre las condiciones climáticas como los rayos y aplazar o cancelar los juegos si las condiciones empeoran y los jugadores corren riesgo. Este mismo mensaje se aplica a todos los deportes organizados, así como a las actividades recreativas al aire libre.

Utilice y siga estas recomendaciones para ayudar a prevenir las lesiones causadas por los rayos durante los eventos deportivos y las actividades al aire libre: • Antes de cualquier práctica o actividad, la persona encargada debe revisar los pronósticos locales del tiempo. Este pendiente de cualquier alerta del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional sobre alertas o advertencias de tempestad. se acerca. Aunque los rayos pueden caer sin ningún aviso, cuando una tempestad viene en camino, las nueves se oscurecen, el viento arrecia y pueden presentarse truenos. Ponga mucha atención a estas señales y a las advertencias que han sido comunicadas.

• Cerciórese de que su niño está enterado de los peligros de los rayos y de la política a seguir de su entrenador. Si el entrenador no sigue la política, como padre, es hora de intervenir y sacar a su niño de la cancha o campo de juego. ¡La seguridad es lo más importante!

Esté preparado y tenga protocolos establecidos para los rayos que estén incluidos en los planes de medidas de emergencia (EAP, por sus siglas en inglés) de las escuelas y ligas deportivas.

Cree y practique protocolos para la prevención y el tratamiento de lesiones por rayos como parte del plan de medidas de emergencia.

- Asigne a una "vigilante de las condiciones climáticas" y cree una cadena de comando para monitorear y responder a las condiciones severas del clima.

- En caso de tempestades inminentes, aquellos encargados del evento o sede deben cancelarlo, advertir a los participantes y espectadores sobre el peligro de los rayos y específicamente instruirlos sobre los procedimientos apropiados para la evacuación.

- El tiempo designado para la evacuación depende de qué tan rápido se aproxime la tormenta y como esté estructurada la seda (el tiempo necesario para que todos encuentren un refugio seguro. When Thunder Roars Go Indoors

If your child is playing or practicing in less than ideal weather conditions, you need to be aware of the possible hazards and have a plan worked out ahead of time.

Basic Lightning Facts & Stats • It does not have to be raining for lightning to strike.

• All thunderstorms produce lightning. If you can hear thunder, the storm is close enough for lightning to strike.

• Lightning strikes can cause death or permanent disability. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), more than 400 people in the United States are struck by lightning each year, resulting in an average of 49 deaths.

• The NWS reported that 17% of lightning deaths between 2006 and 2013 occurred during outdoor sports or recreational activities. These sports include soccer, golf, running, baseball, and football, in rank order. The greatest number of fatalities occurred in the 10 to 19-year-old and 20 to 29-year-old age groups. Many victims were either headed to safety or just steps away from safety at

the time of a fatal lightning strike. Therefore, taking action before the threat is upon you is key!

Lighting & Sports Safety Tips from the AAP • While our message of getting outside, enjoying nature and promoting physical activity remains unwavering, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy statement, Baseball and Softball, advises all coaches and officials to be aware of extreme weather conditions—including lightning—and to postpone or cancel games if conditions worsen and players are at risk. This same message applies to all organized sports, as well as to all recreational outdoor activities.

Use and follow these recommendations to help prevent lightning injuries during sporting events and outdoor activities: • Prior to any practice or activity, the person in charge should check the local weather forecasts. Be aware of whether or not the NWS has issued a thunderstorm "watch" or "warning." A "watch" means conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop in an area; a "warning" means severe weather has been reported in the area and for everyone to take proper precautions. Activities should be delayed if a thunderstorm is approaching before or during a practice or a game.

• Recognize the signs of a coming storm. Although lightning can strike without warning, when

a thunderstorm is on the way, clouds may darken, winds may pick up, and there may be thunder activity. Pay close attention to these signs and any issued warnings.

• Be sure your child understands the dangers of lightning and the policy that his or her coach needs to follow. If the coach doesn't follow the policy, as a parent, it's time to step in and remove your child from the field. Safety is the most important thing!

Be prepared and have established protocols for lightning incorporated into your school or league's Emergency Action Plans (EAPs). Develop and practice lightning strike prevention and treatment protocols as part of your EAP. - Designate a "weather watcher" and a clear chain of command to monitor and respond to severe weather.

- In the event of impending thunderstorms, those in control of the event/venue should cancel the event, warn participants and spectators of the lightning danger, and specifically instruct on the proper procedure for evacuation.

- The timeframe for evacuation depends on how fast the storm is approaching and the layout of the venue (the timeframe needed for everyone to seek safe shelter). Generally, a lightning strike within 6 to 8 miles of the venue calls for evacuation.
