n un mundo en donde la tecnología pareciera estar marcando territorio como un requisito importante para compañías en desarrollo e interacciones cotidianas, como educadoras y padres nos preguntamos: ¿La tecnología es una herramienta realmente necesaria en el salón de clases? ¿La tecnología afecta en las experiencias de aprendizaje de nuestros peques?

Y de ser así, ¿afecta de una manera positiva o negativa?

Como padres, nos apoyamos en la tecnología en nuestro día a día al usar tabletas, videoconferencias, televisores, computadoras y teléfono. Nuestros hijos son los primeros en reconocer que la tecnología pareciera ser una parte esencial y natural de la vida porque están creciendo inmersos en el mundo digital. Están acostumbrados a ver cómo sus padres y maestros utilizan la tecnología para enseñar, aprender y jugar. Entonces: ¿Cómo le pedimos a nuestros hijos que no quieran lo que nosotros como padres y maestros utilizamos tan frecuentemente?

Aunque la tecnología es considerada como una herramienta maravillosa que

ayuda a estudiantes a desarrollar sus capacidades de una manera divertida e interactiva, es importante comprender cuándo y cómo introducir la tecnología en la vida de nuestros peques para asegurarnos de que realmente estemos beneficiando su proceso de aprendizaje y que no lo estemos retrasando de alguna manera. Estudios recientes han demostrado que el uso de tabletas puede causar un retraso significativo en el desarrollo de lenguaje de nuestros hijos así como también la Academia de Pediatría Americana ha publicado nuevas políticas y recomendaciones a los padres con respecto al uso de la tecnología en las edades tempranas.

Antes de los 18 meses de edad, la Academia Americana de Pediatría recomienda que no se utilice de ninguna manera la tecnología y que después de los 18 meses puede ser utilizada solo si el contenido es educativo. Investigadores han concluido que el pensamiento crítico, exploración y la interacción social son necesarios para tener un proceso de aprendizaje sano y significativo. La importancia de no utilizar la tecnología para

sustituir estos tres elementos en la educación es crítica.

Es importante tomar en serio las recomendaciones hechas por la Asociación Americana de Pediatría y aplicarlas en casa para el desarrollo sano de nuestros peques. Habiendo dicho lo anterior, la tecnología ha tenido un efecto positivo cuando es introducida en los colegios después de los 10 años de edad. Es inevitable que nuestros niños tengan que enfrentarse a un modo de vida repleto de tecnología.

Sus carreras universitarias probablemente dependerán en tener las habilidades necesarias para manejar la tecnología de muchas maneras, es por esto que es importante que los colegios poco a poco integren la tecnología a los salones de clases, asegurándose de que le brindaron a sus alumnos de preescolar y los más pequeños las experiencias y procesos educativos necesarios para un desarrollo sano e íntegro. Al integrar la tecnología en el salón de clases en los grados de primaria, los maestros le estarán ofreciendo a sus alumnos una nueva perspectiva en diferentes temas y un enfoque interactivo al aprender.

Sabemos que la tecnología no le enseña a nuestros niños cómo pensar, pero podemos afirmar que ésta puede ampliar las perspectivas y experiencias de aprendizaje de nuestros peques al ofrecerles recursos de primera y nuevas experiencias. Es por esto que depende de nosotros la manera y el momento en el que introduzcamos la tecnología a nuestros hijos y los guiemos y apoyemos con las herramientas necesarias para su desarrollo y aprendizaje. Y recordemos: no todo es blanco y negro!

Mientras la tecnología se va introduciendo en los salones de clases es fundamental entender los efectos negativos que ésta puede tener en los alumnos más pequeños y los grandes beneficios y efectos positivos que puede traer a nuestros niños más grandes.

La tecnología definitivamente es un recurso maravilloso que puede ser usado por todos, responsablemente!

Tips for Parents in the Digital Age

n a world where technology seems to be gaining territory as a must for rising businesses and everyday interactions, we as educators and parents ask ourselves: Is technology a necessary tool in the classroom?

How does technology affect our little ones’ educational experiences? And if so, does it affect them in a negative or positive way?

As parents, we rely on technology in our everyday lives by using tablets, video conferences, TVs, computers and phones daily. Children are the first to realize that technology seems to be an essential and natural part of life because they are growing up immersed in digital media. They are used to seeing their parents and teachers rely on technology, using it to teach, learn and play. So how can we ask our young ones not to want what we as parents and teachers use so frequently?

Even though technology is considered as a great tool that helps students develop their capacities in a fun and interactive way, it is important to understand how and when to introduce technology into a child’s life, to make sure that we are benefiting his or her learning process and not harming it or delaying it in any way. Recent studies have shown that the use of tablets can cause a significant delay in language development and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released new policies and recommendations for parents regarding the use of technology for early childhood education.

Before 18 months of a child’s age, the AAP recommends no screen time whatsoever and after

18 months digital media may be used only when it has an educational approach to teaching and learning. Researchers have made it a point to show parents and educators how critical thinking, hands-on exploration and social interaction are necessary for a healthy and significant learning process and that technology should not take the place of these three important aspects of the educational experiences we provide our little ones.

These are the recommendations by the AAP: • For children younger than 18 months, avoid use of screen media other than video-chatting.

• Parents of children 18 to 24 months of age who want to introduce digital media should choose high-quality programming, and watch it with their children to help them understand what they’re seeing.

• For children ages 2 to 5 years, limit screen use to one hour per day of high-quality programs. Parents should co-view media with children to help them understand what they are seeing and apply it to the world around them.

• For children ages 6 and older, place consistent limits on the time spent using media, and the types of media, and make sure media does not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other behaviors essential to health.

• Designate media-free times together, such as dinner or driving, as well as media-free locations at home, such as bedrooms.

• Have ongoing communication about online citizenship and safety, including treating others with respect online and offline.

• It is important to take these recommendations seriously and apply them at home for healthier child development. Having said that, technology has had a positive effect when introduced into classrooms after the age of ten. It is inevitable that children these days will have to face a way of life that includes technology. Their careers will probably rely on knowing the needed skills to use technology, so it is important that schools slowly integrate technology into the classroom, making sure that they successfully provide their preschoolers and younger students with the hands-on learning experiences needed to develop their capacities in the best way. By integrating technology into the elementary classrooms, teachers are offering students a new perspective on different topics and an interactive approach to learning.

While we know that technology doesn’t teach children how to think, we can agree that it can certainly broaden our young ones’ horizons by providing them with world class resources and new experiences. That is why it is up to us teachers and parents to guide and support our young ones with the appropriate tools for their development and their learning. And remember: all is not black and white! While technology makes its way into the classrooms, it is important to understand the negative effects it may have on our younger students and the positive effects it will have on older and more mature students. Technology is an amazing resource that can be used by all—responsibly!

a música es una expresión restauradora del ser, una expresión diversa en su potencial” son las palabras de Cesar Rangel al hablar de Youth Enlightenment System, mejor conocida como “Yes Movement”, una organización sin fines de lucro que está enseñando a decenas de jovencitos del sur de la Florida a usar la práctica colectiva de la música formando orquestas sinfónicas de niños y jóvenes.

El Sr. Rangel, un inmigrante venezolano, quien es músico de profesión, trabajó en su país natal en el “El Sistema de Orquestas y Coros” en el estado de Aragua, en donde más de 40.000 niños y jóvenes se beneficiaron de la enseñanza de la música.

Desde hace año y medio el señor Rangel junto a la organización TDA Miami, dirigida por la pastora Doris Machin, unieron fuerza y crearon este programa que enseña música a niños desde los 4 años de edad hasta los 20 de forma gratuita, después de la jornada escolar y durante tres veces a la semana. Con su política de NO EXCLUSIÓN, YES Movement abre sus puertas a niños y jóvenes sin importar las clases sociales, ni aquellos que tengan necesidades especiales.

En la Florida, actualmente el programa ha atendido a más de 400 niños y jóvenes en la formación de altos valores sociales a través de la música.

“En nuestro proyecto buscamos formar a los niños como ciudadanos ejemplares y en el proceso incluimos también a sus familias para que en conjunto impacten positivamente a la comunidad”, dijo Cesar Rangel.

Y ese impacto se ha visto reflejado con la reciente invitación que la organización recibió por parte de la Casa Blanca. La orquesta sinfónica de Yes, junto al quinteto de maestros de viento, conquistaron los hermosos espacios de la casa presidencial. El sonido melodioso de cada instrumento en perfecta armonía provocó el aplauso y la felicitación de los invitados que se dieron cita en el marco de la gran celebración del “Mes de la Herencia Hispana”, en especial la del presidente de los Estados Unidos, Donald Trump y la primera dama Melania Trump; quienes reconocieron el arduo trabajo de Youth Enlightenment System – Y.E.S. como una invaluable herramienta de transformación social.

“Somos un grupo de rescate social e inclusión a través de la música”, agregó Rangel.

Sin embargo, para que esta iniciativa siga avanzando y ayudando a niños del área del 19000 SW 112 AVE. En Miami, es necesario que reciban el apoyo económico de la comunidad, el gobierno, y las entidades privadas, pues los instrumentos que componen una orquesta y su mantenimiento tienen un alto costo.

César Rangel, es un músico convencido del beneficio de introducir a un niño al mundo de la música desde la temprana edad.

“El niño que tenga la experiencia de trabajar con la música, va a tener una transformación en su vida y va a tener más oportunidades en el futuro”.

The organization Youth Enlightenment System (YES) plays concerts inthe White House as part of Hispanic Heritage Month

“

M

usic is an expression that restores our being, a potential diverse expression” stated by Cesar Rangel, YES founder, referring to Youth Enlightenment System, more well-known as “YES Movement”, a non-profit organization that is teaching hundreds of youth in the South Florida the importance of music though the collective practice of music and development of their symphonic children’s orchestra.

Mr. Rangel, a Venezuelan immigrant who is a musician by trade, worked in his native country in the “System of Orchestra and Choirs” in the state of Aragua, where more than 40 thousand children and youth benefitted from the methodology.

About a year and a half ago, Mr. Rangel joined forces with Community Connexion and TDA Miami, founded by Dr. Doris Machin and collaborated in establishment of this organization that offers this free after school music program teaching children as young as 4 and as old as 20, operating three times a week. With their NO EXCLUSION policy, YES movement opens their doors for children and youth from all

social walks of life and makes no exceptions with special needs and disabled children.

In Florida, today the program has worked with well over 400 kids and youth developing high social and moral values through the music. Through collective practice and integrated group dynamics their students explore and discover life skills and values through the development of academic and technical musical skills.

“In our project, we look to shape children as exemplary citizens and in the process we include their families so that together they can positively impact the community”, said Cesar Rangel.

This social impact has been reflected in the recent invitation that the organization received from the White House. The YES Symphonic Orchestra, and the Masters Wind Quintet, filled and captivated the beautiful spaces of the presidential house. The melodious sound of each instrument in perfect harmony caused the applause and the congratulations of the guests that met as part of the big celebration of the “Hispanic Heritage month” particularly that of

the President of the United States Donald Trump and the First Lady Melania Trump. They recognized the hard work of Youth Enlightenment System YES as a valuable tool to social transformation.

“We are an organization dedicated to social rescue and inclusion through orchestra music” added Mr. Rangel.

However, for this initiative to be able to continue and grow in helping the children in the area of 19000 SW 112 Ave in Miami, the financial support of the community is necessary because the instruments that are part of the orchestra and their maintenance have a high price tag.

Cesar Rangel is a musician convinced of the benefit of introducing a child to the world of music from an early age.

“The child that has the experience of working with music will have a transformation in his or her life and will have more opportunities in the future.”

Estudiante del MDC de Homestead

S

tephanie Tinoco, una joven de 22 años con Espina bífida (malformación congénita), es una ocupada estudiante del Miami Dade College (MDC) de Homestead y presidenta del Club de Periodismo del campus. Y es que a pesar de que está en silla de ruedas, y ha soportado cinco dolorosas cirugías , es una luchadora que está lista para enfrentar al mundo.

Tinoco ha ocupado cuatro puestos de trabajo, incluyendo su posición actual como asociada de ventas en la librería del MDC de Homestead. Uno de sus sueños es convertirse en maestra de niños con necesidades especiales, y desafiando las adversidades, está cerca de lograr eso y mucho más.

Siendo la persona dedicada y responsable que es, Tinoco lleva su silla de ruedas eléctrica a la escuela para poder asistir a todas las clases importantes. Su objetivo es educar a los niños con discapacidades mentales o físicas; ella cree que sus circunstancias y experiencias pueden inspirar a otras jóvenes con discapacidades a luchar por la excelencia.

"Parece que muchos niños sienten que no son escuchos porque no tienen a alguien para hablar con ellos que pueda relacionarse con su condición", dijo Tinoco.

Además de su participación en el Club de periodismo, Tinoco está activa con el Dream Team del campus. Su motivación para unirse fue simple: satisfacer su pasión por el voluntariado con agencias prometedoras que hacen una diferencia en la sociedad. Se complace al saber que ha ayudado a una persona necesitada, y lo ha hecho con personas de ideas afines y que comparten el mismo entusiasmo. La escritura siempre ha sido una salida para ella, debido a que a veces no tiene la capacidad de vocalizar sus emociones y sentimientos con claridad. Esta, también fue una herramienta útil para mejorar sus habilidades de escritura cuando era niña.

Además de la escuela y el trabajo, Tinoco se encuentra incapaz de permanecer inactiva: "¡No me gusta quedarme en casa!". A menudo la puedes encontrar en el centro comercial, en la playa o en muchos eventos sociales. Ella aprovecha lo que su comunidad tiene para ofrecer. La ubicación no es un problema, y participar en actividades con amigos es imprescindible para ella.

Justo este verano, sirvió como voluntaria para la organización Shake-A-Leg Miami, un campamento para niños discapacitados que pueden disfrutar navegando y haciendo kayak por las aguas de Coconut

Groove. "Mi parte favorita fue ver las sonrisas en las caras de los niños", dijo.

Stephanie Tinoco es un ejemplo para todos, nos enseña que la independencia es una opción , y permitir que una etiqueta defina todo su valor es paralizante. En honor al Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre la Discapacidad, su deseo es inspirar a los demás y concientizar sobre una condición que a veces se pasa por alto. Como ella dice, "¡solo vives una vez! Por lo tanto, trato de motivar a los demás de la mejor manera que puedo, porque 'no puedo' nunca ha sido parte de mi vocabulario ".

Disability Does Not Define MDC Homestead Student

tephanie Tinoco, a 22-year-old student with spina bifida (birth defect), is a busy Miami-Dade College (MDC) Homestead student and president of the MDC Homestead Journalism Club. And even though she is wheelchair bound and has endured five excruciating surgeries, she is a fighter who is ready to face the world head on.

Tinoco has held four jobs, including her current position as a sales associate at the MDC Homestead Bookstore, and dreams of becoming a teacher for children with special needs. By defying the odds as well as finishing her early childhood development courses, she is close to achieving that and more.

Being the dedicated and responsible person that she is, Tinoco rides her power wheelchair to school, so she can attend every important lecture. Her goal is to educate children with mental or physical handicaps; she believes her circumstan-

ces and experiences can inspire other young individuals with disabilities to strive for excellence.

“It seems like so many children feel that they are not heard because they don’t have people to talk to them who can relate to their condition,” Tinoco said.

Besides her involvement with the Journalism Club, Tinoco is active with the campus Dream Team. Her motive for joining was simple: to satisfy her passion for volunteering with promising agencies that make a difference in our society. She takes pleasure in knowing she has assisted a person in need and has done so with likeminded people who share similar enthusiasms. Writing has always been an outlet for her, due to sometimes not having the ability to vocalize her emotions and feelings clearly.

It was also a helpful tool for improving her writing skills as a young child.

Aside from school and work, Tinoco finds herself unable to remain idle: “I dis-

like staying home!” She can often be found at the mall, a beach, or many social events. She takes advantage of what her community has to offer. Location is not an issue and taking part in activities with friends is a must for her.

Just this summer, she volunteered for the Shake-A-Leg Miami organization, a camp for disabled kids who can enjoy sailing and kayaking the waters off Coconut Groove. “My favorite part was seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces,” she said.

Stephanie Tinoco is an example to all that independence is a choice and allowing a label to define her entire worth is paralyzing. In honor of National Disability Awareness Month, her wish is to inspire others and to bring awareness to a condition that is sometimes overlooked. As she says, “You only live once! Therefore, I try to motivate others in the best way I can, because ‘can’t’ has never been part of my vocabulary.”

cción de Gracias es un día de fiesta para dar gracias y compartir momentos especiales con familiares y amigos. Si bien originalmente el Día de Acción de Gracias tubo haber tenido lugar durante un tiempo en que la comida era escasa, actualmente el Día de Acción de Gracias muchas veces involucra cantidades excesivas de alimentos, y terminando más comida en la basura que en el estómago de los que celebran ese dia.

El Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos proyecta que los estadounidenses desecharán más de 200 millones de libras de carne de pavo comestible en esta celebración de Acción de Gracias. Y es que el Día de Acción de Gracias suele marcar el comienzo de un período de despilfarro, a como lo dice la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de EE.UU, los hogares estadounidenses producen aproximadamente un 25 por ciento más basura entre Acción de Gracias y Año Nuevo que durante el resto del

año.

Reducir el desperdicio es una meta que vale la pena hacer durante todo el año, pero especialmente durante la temporada de vacaciones. Y lograr ese objetivo se puede hacer sin sacrificar las tradiciones navideñas.

• Use porcelana fina cuando sirva comidas. Acción de Gracias brinda la oportunidad de servir comidas en porcelana fina y usar los cubiertos que no se usan en lugar de platos y utensilios desechables. Además de agregar un toque de elegancia a las comidas, la porcelana y los cubiertos reutilizables son menos costosos que los platos de papel y los utensilios de plástico. Las servilletas de tela y otros manteles son también más ecológicos que las servilletas de papel.

• Decorar usando elementos naturales.

Explore el aire libre para encontrar materiales como de centro de mesa totalmente naturales u otros elementos que se pueden convertir en coronas y guirnaldas. Los floreros llenos de conos de pino y bellotas

crean decoraciones hermosas, baratas y festivas.

• Compre local y orgánicamente.

Cuando compre una cena de Acción de Gracias, elija productos locales, aves de corral y granos siempre que le sea posible. También resista la tentación de comprar más de lo que necesita. Omita algunos de los platos menos populares que solo se usan para hacer que la mesa parezca llena. Compre un pavo pequeño o piense solo en servir pechugas de pavo, que tienden a ser los cortes más populares del ave. Use bolsas de compras reutilizables para llevar los artículos a casa y reducir aún mas los desperdicios.

• Encienda velas y reduzca el consumo de energía. Durante la comida, coma a la luz de las velas y apague las luces en otras áreas de la casa que no estén en uso. En lugar de encender la televisión, lleve la fiesta al aire libre y juegue fútbol en el jardín.

• Tener un Día de Acción de Gracias local. Comience una nueva tradición e invite a amigos y familiares cercanos para la celebración en lugar de viajar largas distancias. Easy 'green' Thanksgiving ideas

hanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants' bellies.

The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day than during the rest of the year.

Reducing waste is a worthy goal yearround, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

• Use fine china when serving meals.

Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to serve meals on fine china and use the silverware that has gone unused instead of disposable plates and utensils. In addition to adding a touch of elegance to meals, reusable china and silverware is less wasteful than paper plates and plastic utensils. Cloth napkins and other table linens are also more eco-friendly than paper napkins.

• Decorate using natural items. Scour the great outdoors for all-natural centerpiece materials or other items that can be turned into wreaths and garlands. Vases filled with pine cones and acorns make for beautiful, inexpensive and festive decorations.

• Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird.

Use reusable shopping bags to carry items home and reduce waste even further.

• Light candles and reduce energy consumption. During the meal, eat by candlelight and turn off lights in other areas of the home that are not in use. Rather than turning on the television, take the party outdoors and play a game of football on the front lawn.

• Have a local Thanksgiving. Start a new tradition and invite nearby friends and family

over for the holiday instead of traveling long distances. According to Use Less Stuff, a resource for eco-conscious men and women, if each family reduced gasoline consumption by one gallon (roughly 20 miles), they could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons.

• Send home the leftovers. Send each guest home with some leftovers if you have any. This way the refrigerator isn't left full of items that will end up uneaten. Otherwise, donate uncooked food to a local food bank.

Use any scraps of vegetables in a compost pile.

• Don't let recycling fall by the wayside.

Remember to recycle all applicable items.

Just because it's a holiday doesn't mean recycling habits should be forgotten. Encourage guests to pitch in by clearly marking recycling bins.

Untreated type 2 disease can lead to serious complications, diabetes experts say

illions of Americans with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes are at risk for chronic kidney disease, and another 59,000 Americans, 40 and older, are at risk for diabetes-related blindness.

That's the sobering conclusion of new research by investigators at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The good news is that, in many cases, these complications can be reversed or their progression slowed, said Dr. Joel Zonszein. He's director of the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. He wasn't involved with the new study.

"When we talk about prevention, we are really talking not about disease prevention, but rather about sustaining good quality of life by delaying more complications," he said. "We can prevent complications by changes in lifestyle and the correct medications," Zonszein added.

In fact, many patients with diabetes for more than 40 to 50 years have none or minimal complications and a normal lifestyle, he noted.

But the only way to prevent or slow the complications of diabetes is to diagnose them early and to aggressively control blood sugar levels, Zonszein said.

"Unfortunately, we have the other side of the coin -- those uninvolved and unengaged with their disease, with untreated diabetes that go down a slippery road and go down fast, developing complications that are hard to slow down," he explained.

"This study is a warning to people who already started having complications," Zonszein said.

According to the report, slightly more than 30 million Americans have type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes can take a toll on the body's circulatory system, especially the tiniest blood vessels, according to Dr. Gerald Bernstein. He's an endocrinologist and coordinator of the Friedman Diabetes Program at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

That's why diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, said Bernstein. He added it's also why chronic kidney disease is a major risk factor for serious heart disease, stroke and death.

In addition, damage to the small blood vessels in the eyes leads to a condition called diabetic retinopathy, which can eventually cause loss of sight, explained Bernstein, who also wasn't involved in the new study The researchers used data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) for 2005-2008. A team led by CDC researcher Meda Pavkov found nearly 400 adults with both diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

More than 36 percent of this group also had diabetic retinopathy.

More than 8 percent had diabetic retinopathy so serious that it threatened their vision, the researchers found.

"Compared to persons without diabetic retinopathy, those with diabetic retinopathy were on average older, with higher HbA1c [a measure of blood sugar over two to three months], higher blood pressure, longer diabetes duration and had insulin treatment," the study authors wrote.

A 1 percent increase in HbA1c led to a 50 percent higher risk of developing the diabetic eye

condition, the investigators found. Additionally, every five years of living with diabetes increased the risk 40 percent.

The impact of blood pressure is smaller, the researchers said, with just a 3 percent higher risk of diabetic retinopathy for every 10 mm Hg increase in systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading).

But people taking insulin to manage their blood sugar have 13-fold increased odds of developing the diabetic eye condition, the findings showed.

"Overall, the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was higher than in the earlier NHANES study after adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, mean blood pressure and HbA1c, whereas the prevalence of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy remained largely unchanged over time," the researchers reported.

Bernstein said that being aware of kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy can help people remain healthy for a long time.

Diagnosing early kidney disease can be done with a simple urine test. In addition, an eye exam can find the early signs of diabetic retinopathy, he said.

"You need to have these looked at on a regular basis, especially in people who are at risk and in people who have abnormal blood sugar, even in the pre-diabetes range. They need to be regularly screened for kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy," Bernstein said.

"When you make the investment in treating eye and kidney issues, you have a chance of protecting that patient for many years -- it gives the tissue a chance to heal itself," he added.

Finally, at 7:15 the animated holiday movies will begin on the special large screen set up in Losner Park; limited seating will be available, so bring a blanket or lawn chairs along with the whole family to enjoy this annual holiday event.

he return of the Homestead National Parks Trolley is just one more reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving weekend.

The award-winning service offering a free ride, free guided tour, and free admission to Everglades & Biscayne National Parks operates every weekend November 25, 2017 through April 29, 2018. The Trolley departs from Historic Downtown Homestead, where visitors can enjoy local area restaurants, visit the free Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum, or catch a show at the Seminole Theatre.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley can be boarded at Losner Park in Historic Downtown Homestead at 104 N. Krome Avenue.

The trolley connects to bus routes from Miami-Dade County public transportation. There is also plenty of free parking adjacent to the trolley stop.
