esde hace años estamos viendo que el ser soldado ya no es exclusivo de un solo género y que las mujeres pueden desempeñar el papel de esposas, madres y militares al mismo tiempo.

Este es el caso de la Sargento Patricia Maldonado-García, madre ejemplar que ha logrado compaginar su rol de madre con el servicio militar. Si bien reconoce que ha sido un poco difícil, esto ha sido posible gracias al gran apoyo brindado por su esposo Carlos Maldonado, quien también es militar.

La Sargento Maldonado-García es Especialista en Salud, cuya responsabilidad es cuidar de la vida, salud y bienestar de los compañeros de su pelotón, tanto dentro de

los entrenamientos como en la zona de batalla.

Además, es madre de una hija de seis años y actualmente tiene cinco meses de embarazo de gemelos, niña y niño. Cuando está en la casa, su día a día es como el de toda mamá, teniendo a cargo las tareas del hogar y la crianza de su hija. Y mientras desempeña ese papel trata de fomentar los principios de disciplina, responsabilidad y hermandad en su pequeña, los mismos que aplica diariamente con sus compañeros.

“Como mamá, mi diligencia con el desarrollo y educación de mi hija son la prioridad dentro de mis actividades diarias.

Como familia hemos hecho nuestro núcleo familiar más fuerte tomando esa herman-

dad y amor de tener la oportunidad de estar juntos y creciendo como familia”, comentó Maldonado-García.

Sin embargo, reconoció que la parte más difícil es estar lejos de su hija y esposo. “El no ver a mi hija por largos períodos me priva de ser testigo inmediato de sus pequeños y grandes logros. Por lo demandante que son los entrenamientos el año completo, se nos dificulta agendar eventos familiares o me pierdo la celebración de fechas importantes como los aniversarios, cumpleaños, días festivos o actividades escolares”, añadió.

Ante la consulta de que, si hay un reproche de parte de su hija por sus períodos de ausencia, contestó que por el momento no ha pasado. “Tratamos de fomentarle el valor que tiene nuestro trabajo para el país y ella siente orgullo de lo que hacen sus padres y expresa que algún día quiere ser como nosotros. Mientras tanto, cuando estamos fuera, nuestra hija disfruta pasar tiempo con sus abuelos y lo toma como vacaciones” Para esta joven de apenas 29 años, el servicio militar siempre llamó su atención, pero no fue sino hasta que su esposo fue enviado a Afganistán que decidió enlistarse con el propósito de auxiliar medicamente en la zona de guerra.

“Yo quise tomar este roll de ser soldado para brindar socorro y lograr que la esposa, madre o hijo tengan un pedacito de tranquilidad sabiendo que alguien está ahí para cuidar de los suyos” Aunque esta madre militar ha tenido momentos difíciles para sobrellevar ambos papeles, lo ha logrado un día a la vez, siempre orgullosa de lo que ha escogido y no cambiaría nada de lo que hasta hoy tiene y es.

or many years, we have seen that soldiers no longer belong to a specific gender and that women can play the role of wives, mothers and military officers at the same time.

That is the case of Sergeant Patricia Maldonado-Garcia, an exemplary mother who has managed to have the dual role of a mother and a soldier. She recognizes that it has been a little difficult; however, it has been possible thanks to the great support provided by her husband Carlos Maldonado, who also serves in the military.

Sargent Maldonado-Garcia is a Health Specialist, whose responsibility is to take care of the health and well-being of the soldiers in her platoon, both in training and in war zones.

six-year-old daughter, and she is now five-months pregnant expecting twins, a girl and a boy.

When she is in the house, her day-to-day routine is like every mother’s, taking care of the house and raising her child.

And while playing that role, she tries to promote the principles of discipline, responsibility and family closeness to her little one, the same principles that she applies daily in her relationship with her peers.

“As a mom, my daily priorities are the development and education of my child. As a family, we make sure that our family is stronger and that we love to have the opportunity to be together and to grow as a family,” said Maldonado-Garcia.

However, she acknowledged that the most difficult part is being away from her daughter

and her husband. “Unable to see my daughter for long periods of time, I am prevented from being there for her and watching her as she achieves different milestones. As demanding as the training is for the whole year, we have difficulty scheduling family events and sometimes we miss important celebration dates such as anniversaries, birthdays, holidays or school activities,” she added.

When asked if there is any reproach by her daughter for her periods of absence, she replied that for the moment that has not happened. “We try to foster the value of our work for the country, and she feels proud of the parents and expresses that someday she wants to be like us. Meanwhile, when we are away, our daugh-

ter enjoys spending time with her grandparents, time that feels as if she were on vacation.”

For this young woman of 29 years, military service had always attracted her attention; however, it was not until her husband was sent to Afghanistan that she decided to enlist to provide medical assistance in the war zone.

“I wanted to take the role of being a soldier to help and give to wives, mothers and children some peace of mind knowing that someone is there to take care of their own.”

Although this military mother has had some difficult times handling both roles, she is doing it one day at a time, always proud of what she has chosen to do and would not change what she has or who she is.

os bates, guantes y las pelotas anuncian que la temporada de béisbol ha llegado para ser disfrutada por toda la familia.

Hoy en día, la vivencia de los partidos de las ligas infantiles y estudiantiles distan mucho de lo que pasaba en los parques años atrás. Y es que en la medida que las familias latinas han incorporado a sus hijos en este deporte, podríamos decir sin temor a equivocarnos que los juegos tienen un sello latino que los caracteriza.

Nos referimos específicamente a que tienen las porras más ruidosas y sus aficionados desarrollan una convivencia muy familiar en cada partido de sus hijos, donde los snacks, el agua y las sillas se comparten, incluso se comparte en ocasiones el malestar por la decisión de un mal strike cantado.

Este es el caso de Reina Cruz, quien junto a sus tres hijas ponen el sabor latino en cada partido de su hijo Alfredo.

desde que tenía 5 años. Y sus hijas no se quedan atrás cuando su hermano ha mandado la bola al jardín central sin que ninguno del equipo contrario haya podido parar. En ese instante se le unen a la porra otras familias latinas levantando así el ánimo del juego.

Entre tanto para Claudia Mena, una madre venezolana, el béisbol es más que un deporte, es una tradición que corre en las venas de su familia por más de seis generaciones. “Me gusta ver cómo las familias se reúnen, y se apasionan, vemos el béisbol como un pasatiempo donde se puede disfrutar y compartir, aunque nuestro equipo gane o pierda siempre hay una razón para celebrar”.

A continuación, le dejamos unos consejos que le servirán para que vivas y aproveches cada juego con intensidad y pasión, independientemente del modelo de familia beisbolera que usted sea.

1. Registra en tu calendario todos los partidos programados durante los fines de semana, porque esto te ayudará a no comprometerte con otras cosas o a coordinar cuando tengas un evento que cho-

2. Prepárate el día antes del juego.

5. Disfruta el momento. La temporada entre las canchas te ayudaran a crear recuerdos inolvidables de tu hijo, así que alista tu cámara, se su mejor fan y prepárate para festejar con ellos sus victorias o consolarlos en sus derrotas.

he baseball bats, gloves and balls are a sign that the baseball season has arrived to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Nowadays, the experience of the children and student league games are far different from what happened in the parks years ago.

And to the extent that the Latin families have incorporated their children into that sport, we could say without mistake that the games are characterized by a Latin flavor.

We are specifically referring to the fact that parents and children are cheering with passion, making lots of noise; and in each game, the fans share snacks, water and chairs. Sometimes they share their disappointment when a bad strike is called.

That is the case of Reina Cruz, who along with her three daughters, puts the Latin flavor in each game in which her son Alfredo plays. “Dale, give it the mango power, you can!” this Dominican mother shouts when she sees that it is Alfredo’s turn to play. He

is an 11-year old who has been playing baseball since he was five. And her daughters are nearby when their brother has sent the ball to center field without any of the opposing team players stopping the ball. At that moment, other Latino families join the group to cheer, thus lifting the mood of the game.

Meanwhile, for Claudia Mena, a Venezuelan mother, baseball is more than a sport; it is a tradition that has run in the veins of her family for more than six generations. “I like to see how families get together and are passionate, for we see baseball as a pastime that we can enjoy and share. Whether our team wins or loses, there is always a reason to celebrate.”

Here are some tips that will help you live and enjoy each game with intensity and passion, regardless of the baseball family model that you demonstrate.

1. Put all scheduled weekend games on your calendar; it will help you not to commit to other engagements or to coordinate

when you have an event that falls during the baseball season. Getting organized in advance will help you enjoy the season better.

2. Get ready the day before the game.

Make sure you put the chairs in the car and have uniforms, snacks, water, cooler and sun block ready.

3. Take advantage and exercise during baseball practices because during the games, you will be anxious not to miss any play that involves your star child.

4. Stay hydrated. The months during the season are when the temperature in Miami soars and the heat becomes unbearable.

For that reason, it is important to provide your family with plenty of fluids by having a small cooler with bottled water inside.

5. Enjoy the moment. The time you spend in the games will help create unforgettable memories of your son, so get your camera ready, become his best fan and prepare to celebrate with him his victories or to comfort him when he loses.

campamento de verano

erminando el mes de mayo y con la mirada ya puesta en los dos meses y medio de vacaciones que nuestros hijos disfrutarán, llega también el dilema de muchos padres: ¿Con quién dejamos a los niños mientras trabajamos?

Hay quienes tienen el problema resuelto cuando de por medio hay abuelos o personas contratadas en casa para ese fin, pero para quienes no cuentan con estos apoyos hay otras opciones, como los campamentos que cada verano conquistan a padres hijos.

Existe una variada oferta que se adapta a todo tipo de gustos como campamentos de arte, musicales, con idiomas, de deporte, culinarios y ecológicos, entre otros, para poder elegir.

En este artículo hablamos de todas las claves para seleccionar un campamento de verano, pero la elección que usted haga será en función de la edad del niño y de los pasatiempos que a él le gustan. Recuerde que tiene que ser una actividad de ocio y no una obligación.

It is downloaded to the App Store if you have an iPhone and Google Play if you use the Android operating system; just enter “The Children's Trust” in the search field.

The digital guide covers almost 200 program options, several of them free, and allows you to search activities and places using keywords such as an address or a zip code. An interactive map also shows all points of interest within the county.

We recommend that before making the decision, follow the following tips: The type of camp depends on your available budget; therefore, research for low-cost options or grants.

It is important to choose the one most related to the personality and interests of your child. To do that, we suggest that the

child participate in the selection and if possible share it with other friends.

You should also take into account the distance from your home, duration of the camp, type of interaction, and its quality controls in place.

Ensure that the camp has the necessary accreditation and complies with its policies before enrolling the child in it.

Find out if the staff is accredited and if there is adequate coverage for the number of children for which they will be responsible. Your child should always be supervised by qualified personnel!

Check if the camp is adapted to your child’s physical needs or special diet, if required.

Finally, remember that what you are looking for is the comfort and safety of the child, so when you call, ask all the necessary questions to obtain lots of information. Although you may seem to be asking for too much, it is never enough when it relates to the welfare of your child.

n Estados Unidos, Canadá y otras 15 naciones, del 7 al 13 de mayo a nivel nacional se va a celebrar la semana anual de la secretaria municipal.

En 1984 y 1994, los Presidentes Ronald Reagan y Bill Clinton, cada uno respectivamente firmó una proclamación para oficialmente declarar la primera semana de mayo como “La Semana de los Secretarios Municipales”, con el fin de reconocer el importante papel de ellos en el gobierno local.

Entre las funciones de las secretarias municipales se encuentran: la preparación de agendas, elaboración de minutas, mantener los archivos de ordenanzas y resoluciones, mantener los archivos históricos de la municipalidad, procesar los permisos y servir como un centro de información del gobierno local.

En nuestro estado, el Florida Association of City Clerks, conocida por sus siglas en inglés como FACC, va a realizar varias actividades para dar a conocer al público más detalles sobre la labor de una secretaria

municipal y la importancia de sus servicios para el gobierno local y la comunidad.

Florida Association of City Clerks tiene más de 500 miembros que representan las secretarias municipales de ciudades, municipios, villas y distritos especiales.

Go! Latinos Magazine entrevistó a Missy Arocha, Village Clerk de Village of Palmetto Bay, quien además es la única latina con esta posición en las comunidades de South Dade.

Arocha, quien nació en Miami, Florida hija de inmigrantes cubanos, afirma que su trabajo es muy satisfactorio porque le permite ser la conexión entre el gobierno local y la comunidad de Palmetto Bay. “Como mujer y como latina, es un orgullo poder servir a los funcionarios electos de Palmetto Bay. Una de las principales razones por las que amo lo que hago es el hecho de poder servir a diario a la comunidad, respondiendo preguntas acerca de próximas reuniones, documentos públicos, etc y este es un sentimiento que continua creciendo”.

Municipal Clerks’ Week

he United States of America, Canada, and 15 other nations on May 7 through May 13 will be celebrating Municipal Clerk’s Week. In 1984 and in 1994, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, respectively, signed a Proclamation officially declaring Municipal Clerks Week the first full week of May and recognizing the essential role Municipal Clerks play in local government. Among the duties of municipal clerks are taking minutes, preparing agendas, maintaining ordinance and resolution files, maintaining historical records of the municipality, processing permits and services, and acting as the center of information of the local government.

In our state, the Florida Association of City Clerks (FACC) will be holding different activities to raise awareness among the community about the job of a municipal clerk and the importance of this position and its services to the government and the community. The

Florida Association of City Clerks (FACC) has more than 500 members that represent municipal clerks from cities, municipalities, villages, and special districts.

Go! Latinos Magazine interviewed Missy Arocha, Village Clerk of the Village of Palmetto Bay, who is the only Hispanic woman that holds this charter position in the South Dade communities.

Arocha who was born in Miami, Florida and whose parents are Cuban immigrants said that her job is very rewarding because it allows her to be the connection between the local government and the community of Palmetto Bay. “As a woman and as a Latina, I am honored to be able to serve the elected officials of Palmetto Bay. One of the main reasons why I love what I do is the fact that I can proudly serve the Village on a daily basis by answering questions regarding upcoming meetings, public documents, and adopted legislation and that is a feeling that continues to burn brightly."

Este tipo de lesiones que se extienden en el tiempo, son recurrentes y tienden a doler, incluso cuando se está en reposo, son lo que conocemos como lesiones crónicas, muy frecuentes en el mundo del deporte, pero no son exclusivas de los deportistas.

Estos tipos de lesiones recurrentes también suelen sobrevenir en los lugares de trabajo donde las personas llevan a cabo tareas repetitivas en la que actúan los mismos músculos una y otra vez.

Como explicábamos estas lesiones periódicas en ocasiones pasan por fases agudas.

con frío. Por su parte, las lesiones crónicas son aquellas que se producen horas después de haber realizado la actividad; normalmente pasadas 48/72 horas y que trataremos con calor principalmente.

Estas lesiones se pueden producir por una falta de tonicidad muscular, una alteración en el recorrido normal de la articulación, por un sobre uso principalmente, por los ligamentos sueltos, el tejido cicatricial inflexible de las lesiones anteriores y desequilibrio muscular.

Las opciones de tratamiento en lesiones crónicas pueden incluir: • Ejercicios de fisioterapia para promover la curación, la fuerza y la flexibilidad.

• Las técnicas manuales, como la movilización y el masaje.

• Electroterapia.

• Medicamentos para calmar el dolor.

• Poco a poco la introducción de actividades a los niveles normales.

Es importante obtener el tratamiento adecuado lo más pronto posible después de la lesión para ayudar a una rápida recuperación. Consulta a tu médico o fisioterapeuta inmediatamente si la función se deteriora o si el dolor y la hinchazón no desaparecen después de un par de días.

Evite las lesiones crónicas 1. Un esguince es un tipo de lesión de la articulación que generalmente implica el desgarro de los ligamentos de la cápsula. Los esguinces mal curados son la causa más frecuente de una futura lesión crónica.

2. Una distensión es una lesión en los músculos o los tendones, debiendo mantener reposo de dichos músculos para que no se repitan lesiones en la zona.

3. El tratamiento inmediato incluye reposo, bolsas de hielo, compresión (vendaje) y elevación y una mala recuperación puede desembocar en una lesión crónica.

4. El tratamiento en curso y la supervisión de volver al trabajo o el deporte debe ser autorizado por el fisioterapeuta, y de manera escalonada.

Chronic Injuries

he rhythm of life sometimes causes us to have discomfort in our bodies or joints and/or muscles.

Normally, we do not pay special attention to those ailments, which eventually reduce our ability to move and diminish the quality of life, leading to a loss of good health and well-being.

Those types of lesions that extend over time, that reoccur and tend to be painful even when we are resting, are known as chronic injuries. They are frequent in the world of sports, but are not limited to athletes. The recurring injuries often occur in the workplace where people perform repetitive tasks using the same muscles repeatedly.

As we explained, those recurring lesions sometimes go through acute stages. The acute phase of this type of disease is one that occurs during exercise and is usually treated in the first 48 hours using ice or cold compresses. Chronic injuries are those that occur hours after having performed the activity, usually after 48 to 72 hours, and will be treated mainly by applying heat to the affected area.

Treatment options for chronic injuries may include: • Physiotherapy exercises to promote healing, strength and flexibility.

• Manual techniques, such as mobilization and massage.

• Electrotherapy.

• Medications to relieve pain.

• Slow introduction of activities to normal levels.

It is important to get the right treatment as soon as possible after the injury to help a speedy recovery. Consult your doctor or physiotherapist immediately if the body function affected deteriorates or if the pain and swelling do not go away after a couple of days.

Avoid Chronic Injuries 1. A sprain is a type of joint injury that usually involves tearing of the capsule ligaments. Poorly healed sprains are the most common cause of a chronic injury.

2. A strain is an injury to the muscles or tendons. Keep the muscles at rest so that there are no recurring lesions in the area.

3. Immediate treatment includes rest, applying ice packs, compression (bandaging) and elevating the affected area. A poor recovery can lead to chronic injury.

4. Ongoing treatment and returning to work or doing sports again must be authorized by the physiotherapist in increasing levels of intensity and length.

alir de la casa en su auto para ir a la escuela, el trabajo o el supermercado, hace parte de la rutina diaria de millones de personas en USA y en el resto del mundo, pero esta actividad muchas veces en una especie de sueño inalcanzable para una persona con una discapacidad, especialmente si no tienen un medio de transporte adecuado que les permita movilizarse.

De acuerdo con estadísticas de los Centros Para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) en USA hay 74.8 millones de personas de 18 años en adelante que al menos tienen una dificultad para realizar actividades básicas o una limitación para hacerlas.

Y eso es algo que Jorge Roque, un inmigrante cubano, tiene muy claro; Jorge desde hace algún tiempo se ha dedicado a dar la oportunidad para que muchas personas puedan movilizarse con la ayuda de un vehículo adaptado, a través de la empresa MobilityWorks en el estado de Florida.

Y es que antes de trabajar en esta empresa, por más de 20 años, Roque fue vendedor de autos. Sin embargo, al llegar a MobilityWorks y ver de cerca el sufrimiento de muchas personas, al no poder tener un medio de transporte adecuado, su vida cambió y ahora considera que es una misión personal ayudar a que las personas puedan movilizarse en un auto especialmente adaptado para ellos.

Ahora cuando veo a alguien con discapacidad en el estacionamiento de un almacén, bajándose de un auto adaptado, entiendo el trabajo que tienen que pasar, porque estos tipos de autos tiene unos diseños especiales dependiendo de las necesidades de los clientes.

“Los precios varian dependiendo del tipo de conversión, ya sea una conversión de una camioneta tipo van, o si la conversión ya está en la camioneta, agregó.

Es por eso que su compañía ofrece diversas opciones de financiamiento para los clientes que lo necesiten.

De ahí que Jorge también esté muy involucrado en la fundación sin fines de lucro

Según Jorge, su trabajo ofreciendo movilidad es algo que lo llena de mucha satisfacción personal y al ver el cambio positivo de sus clientes, lo motiva a seguir buscando formas de cambiarle la vida a las personas con discapacidad.

“Hace un tiempo tenía una clienta que estaba muy deprimida porque no podía salir de su casa por su discapacidad, pero después de que le adaptamos su carro su vida cambió. Ahora es una mujer feliz, tiene su propio vehículo, va a la escuela y sale al cine con sus amigas y tiene la libertad que antes no tenía”.

MobilyWorks Is Positively Changing the Lives of

Many Handicapped People in Florida

eaving your home, driving your vehicle to school, work or the grocery store is part of the mundane dayto-day life of many people in this country and in other parts of the world.

But these routine tasks could be an unreachable dream to a person with a disability, especially if she or he doesn’t own a mode of transportation that will allow him or her to move freely.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 74.8 million adults aged 18 and over have at least one basic movement difficulty or complex activity limitation. And that’s something that Jorge Roque, a Cuban immigrant knows very well. For quite some time, Jorge has dedicated himself to focus on giving the opportunity of mobility to many people with the help of a custom vehicle through the company MobilityWorks in the state of Florida.

“I don’t sell cars, I sell mobility for my clients,” beams Jorge, talking about his job.

Before working for this company, Jorge Roque worked for over 20 years as a car salesman. Nevertheless, when he began to work through close personal relationships at MobilityWorks, he realized the suffering of many people when they don’t have a proper mode of transportation. This fundamentally changed his perception of life.

Now, he considers his job a personal mission to help others to have mobility using a proper vehicle custom-designed for them.

According to Roque, when he sees a person with a disability in the parking lot of a store, getting out of his or her customized car, he understands the hard work these people have to go through because those cars have very specific designs depending on the need of the person.

“The prices vary depending on the type of conversion a car may need. Either the conversion of a van, or if the conversion is already done in the vehicle,” said Roque.

Because of that, the company offers different ways of financing to fill the need of its clients.

Jorge is also very involved in a nonprofit foundation called The MobilityWorks Foundation that offers mobility equipment and services to handicap people and their families all over the United States. To Jorge, offering mobility to his clients is something very rewarding, and to see the positive change in the lives of his clients motivates him to keep searching for ways to change the lives of people with a mobi-

lity disability.

“Some time ago, I had a client who was very depressed because she could not leave her house because of disability.

Later we were able to make a conversion to her car, and her life changed. Now she is a happy woman who drives her own vehicle. She goes to school, she goes to the movies with her friends, and she has freedom that she did not have before.”
