uando te den a elegir entre tener la razón o ser amable, elije la amabilidad", dijo el Sr. Browne al comienzo del año escolar en Beecher Prep, donde Auggie (August) Pullman, un niño con una afección craneofacial, estaba a punto de comenzar su transición de la educación en casa a la escuela preparatoria. Aunque la frase es originalmente del Dr. Wayne D. Dyer, describe perfectamente el tema de bondad y tolerancia que hizo que Wonder resonara con tantas personas en todo el mundo.

Raquel Jaramillo Palacio, una estadounidense de primera generación con ascendencia colombiana, se inspiró para escribir Wonder a través de un suceso que le marcaría, cuando junto a su hijo se encontraron de cerca con una niña con una diferencia craneofacial compleja y la reacción de su hijo fue muy brusca.

"Escribí el libro a partir de esa experiencia. Me hizo preguntarme cómo debe ser para esa niña enfrentarse todos los días a un mundo que no sabe cómo afrontarle" agregó.

Esa misma noche ella comenzó a escribir. Le tomó alrededor de un año y medio terminar lo que se convirtió en uno de los bestsellers del New York Times durante cinco años seguidos.

Wonder recibió numerosos premios nacionales e internacionales y también inspiró una película de Hollywood protagonizada por Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson y Jacob Trembley, que llegó a la taquilla el otoño pasado y fue un éxito inmediato en todo el mundo. "En Brasil, la película vendió más que la Guerra de las Galaxias", expresó R.J. Palacio.

Lo más importante es que el poder de Wonder inspiró la campaña de concientización Choose Kind, un fenómeno que está desafiando al mundo y se ha implementado a nivel nacional a través de lecturas comunitarias y un programa de

bondad para maestros. De muchas maneras, R.J. Palacio se convirtió en una defensora de los niños que tienen diferencias craneofaciales- y otras condiciones- mediante la enseñanza de un concepto simple: cómo afrontar la incomodidad en torno a la diferencia y cómo elegir la bondad.

Wonder también inspiró un movimiento anti-bullying, "muchas comunidades han podido elegir el libro, y ahora la película, como una referencia al abordar el tema del bullying como un problema.

De esta manera, se ha convertido en una forma de derrotar la cultura del acoso y redescubrir el poder del carácter y la empatía entre los niños ", agregó.

Palacio, quien define su novela debut como "una meditación sobre la bondad", afirma que parte de su historia se debe a su herencia latina y muchos de los personajes se basan en su propia experiencia como madre latina. "Mi estilo de crianza se basa en la forma en que me crié. En la película y el libro, la madre de Isabel es brasileña. Isabel (Julia Roberts) tiene una forma muy latina de ser madre. Lo que quiero decir es que soy un poco sobreprotectora, beso mucho, abrazo mucho y soy muy cariñosa. Eso es parte de quien soy. Fui criada por padres colombianos que eran extremadamente incondicionales con su amor ".

Por último, envió un mensaje de amabilidad y apoyo a la comunidad latina que esté atravesando momentos difíciles. "Desafortunadamente, vivimos en un momento en que el bullying no sólo se experimenta en las escuelas, sino a un nivel mucho más alto, en el gobierno e incluso con nuestro presidente. Espero que la decencia y la bondad opaquen lo que estamos viendo ahora, que es absolutamente escandaloso en términos del acoso a la comunidad latina. Aguantemos, las cosas mejorarán si nos mantenemos unidos ", concluyó.

Go! Latinos Magazine had the privilege to speak with Colombian-American R.J. Palacio, the author of the New York Times bestseller Wonder, the amazing story of Auggie, the ordinary boy with the extraordinary face who inspired a worldwide movement and an acclaimed Hollywood movie.

hen given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind,” said Mr. Browne at the start of the school year at Beecher Prep, where Auggie (August) Pullman, a kid with a craniofacial condition, was about to start his transition from homeschooling to middle school. Although the quote is originally from Dr. Wayne D. Dyer, it perfectly describes the theme of kindness and tolerance that made Wonder resonate with so many people around the world.

Raquel Jaramillo Palacio, a first-generation American of Colombian ancestry, was inspired to write Wonder as an outsider when she found herself and her kid near a little girl with a very difficult craniofacial difference and her son’s reaction was very abrupt. “I wrote the book out of that experience. It made me wonder what it must be

like for that child, facing a world every day that doesn’t know how to face her back,” she said.

That same night, she started to write. It took her about a year and a half to finish what became one of the New York Times bestseller for five years in a row. Wonder received numerous national and international awards and inspired a Hollywood movie featuring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Trembley, which hit the box office last fall and was an immediate success worldwide.

“In Brazil the movie outsold even Star Wars,” R.J. Palacio mentioned.

Most importantly, the power of Wonder encouraged the awareness campaign Choose Kind, a phenomenon that is challenging the world, and has been implemented nationwide through community reads and a Kindness Program for teachers. In many

ways, R.J. Palacio became an advocate for children who have craniofacial differences and other conditions by teaching a simple concept: how to confront discomfort around difference and how to choose kindness.

Wonder also inspired an anti-bullying movement, “many communities have been able to choose the book, and now the movie, as a reference to talk about when bullying is a problem. It has become a way to defeat the culture of bullying and rediscover the power of character and empathy among children,” she added.

Palacio, who defines her debut novel as “a meditation on kindness,” claims part of her storytelling is due to her Latino heritage and many of the characters are based on her own experience as a Latina mother. “My style of parenting is based on the way I was raised. In the movie and the book Isabel’s mom is Brazilian. Isabel (Julia Roberts) has a very Latin way of mothering. What I mean by that is that I’m a little overprotective, I kiss a lot, I hug a lot, I’m very affectionate and that’s part of who I am. I was raised by Colombian parents who were unconditional in their love.”

Lastly, she sent a message of kindness and support to the Latino community that might be going through a difficult time. “Unfortunately, we are living in a time when bullying isn’t being experienced just in schools, but at a much higher level, in the government and even with our president.

I’m hoping that common decency and kindness will overwhelm what we are seeing right now which is outrageous in terms of the targeting of the Latino community. Hang in there, things will get better if we stay together,” she concluded.

El mes de marzo es dedicado al mes de ciclismo o mejor conocido como “Bike Month” en nuestro estado (El Mes Nacional de la Bicicleta es en Mayo, pero Florida se celebra en marzo). Si estás pensando en empezar a montar bici el momento perfecto es ahora. Florida “Bike Month” promueve un estilo de vida saludable y lleva su visión de crear una red de actividades que ayuden a crear conciencia sobre este modo de vida sana a través del ciclismo. Florida busca ser un estado donde montar bicicleta sea seguro, res-

petado y sobretodo recomendado no solo como medio de transporte sino también como modo de diversión.

Sin duda, los programas de seguridad en las escuelas y eventos deportivos en la comunidad ayudan a promover actividades relacionadas al uso de bicicletas. La Junta Escolar de las Escuelas Públicas del condado de Miami-Dade County ha apoyado esta iniciativa con el programa “Bike to School Day” un día en el cual los niños van en bicicletas a la escuela y se hacen distintas actividades donde les enseñan tips de seguridad. Todas las escuelas partici-

pan de maneras diferentes, pero con el mismo fin de promover ciclismo de una manera divertida en nuestra comunidad.

Dr. Larry Feldman, Miembro de La Junta Escolar representando el Distrito 9, apoya este tipo de programas en las escuelas, pero también lo lleva otro nivel al trabajar con las comunidades que él representa; organizando eventos de ciclismo para familias. Este año Dr. Feldman será el anfitrión del 8vo Community Bike Day junto a Village de Pinecrest, un evento que ayuda a motivar a estudiantes y familias a llevar una vida más activa y saludable.

Este año han expandido el evento al incluir no solo ciclistas sino también a corredores y caminadores que deseen participar. “Espero que este evento motive a más familias a aprovechar las ventajas de nuestro maravilloso clima y paisajes al igual que promover una vida más saludable” dijo Dr. Feldman. Esta es la oportunidad perfecta para que los residentes de Pinecrest disfruten de sus caminos verdes, senderos, parques y puntos históricos en este evento deportivo conocido como #BikeRunWalk2018.

El #BikeRunWalk2018 iniciará con una feria que comienza a las 9:00 a.m. y luego la carrera que se llevará a cabo en el vecindario de Pinecrest. o have a great day, you must pedal away! March is Bike Month in our sunshine state (National Bike Month is in May, but Florida celebrates it in March due to favorable weather). If you are thinking of giving cycling a try, this is the time to take a ride. Florida Bike Month promotes healthy lifestyle choices and promotes its mission of creating a bicycling network of sharing best practices to educate, advocate and to build awareness as a unified voice. Florida thrives in making this a state where bicycling is safe, respected and encouraged as a means of transportation and recreation.

There is no doubt that bike safety programs, partnerships and bicycling community events help promote and encourage bicycling activities. The School Board of Miami-Dade County has endorsed programs promoting National Bike to School Day to promote safe bicycling skills and activities throughout the entire District. All schools participate in different ways by conducting festivities and events that encourage bicycling to school.

School board member Dr. Larry Feldman champions this program in schools and works closely with his communities to take a step further by conducting events that promote healthy lifestyles. This year Dr. Feldman will host the 8th Annual Community Bike Day event in conjunction with the Village of Pinecrest to encourage and enhance student and family participation in active healthy living. This year, the event has expanded and opened to not only bikers but also runners and walkers. This is a great opportunity for residents to experience Pinecrest’s trails, parks, and historic destinations.

The #BikeRunWalk2018 event will feature an information fair that starts at 9 a.m., followed by a bike ride around the Pinecrest neighborhood. School board and Village of Pinecrest Police officers will ride along with the riders on the 2-, 4-, and 8-mile loops. Miami’s Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Bike 305 will give away over 200 helmets and conduct helmet fittings, and University of Miami Bike Safe will be on hand to provide students with bike safety points through their Bike Rodeo. The event will end with a raffle, some giveaways include brand-new bicycles as well as entertainment tickets and many other items thanks to the gracious donations of Panter, Panter and Sampedro Law Firm and Mack Cycle.

This free community event is made possible through the collaborative effort of the school board office of board member Dr. Larry Feldman and the Village of Pinecrest and with the generous support of area businesses and community organizations from the Pinecrest area. s Homestead’s Mayor, I couldn’t be more proud of the successes we’ve seen in Homestead and South Dade and to congratulate FedEx on being one of them. All across America, communities are reinventing themselves and South Dade is no exception. In Homestead we embarked on a plan to breathe new life into the Historic Downtown and create an economic halo effect that spurs regional growth and a competitive business climate.

We’ve enjoyed many successes, completing multiple projects on-time and on-budget, reopening the Historic Seminole Theatre as a cultural arts center, and creating the world’s first high-tech public library called the Homestead Cybrary. We’ve also secured innovative partnerships with the private sector to open a transit center, movie theater, and family entertainment center in the heart of Downtown Homestead.

Now, private industry has taken note and we’re seeing companies seize the opportunity to be part of the movement. In Homestead’s Park of Commerce, air conditioning company Dunham Bush broke ground on a new facility that will create more than 100 jobs over the next five years. And, the latest addition to South Dade’s economic engine is FedEx’s new distribution center, which promises to create 300 plus jobs for Homestead and Miami-Dade County.

These and many other businesses are helping continue the progress we’ve already made to create a thriving, vibrant community where our residents can live, work, and play.

En todo Estados Unidos, las comunidades se están reinventando y South Dade no es la excepción. En Homestead hemos implementado un plan para dar nueva vida al Centro Histórico y crear un efecto económico que estimule el crecimiento regional y un ambiente empresarial más competitivo.

Condado de Miami-Dade y FPL firman acuerdo para tratamiento y reutilización de aguas residuales

Ley estatal requiere que los condados que actualmente vierten la mayor parte de sus aguas residuales en el mar comiencen a reutilizar el 60 por ciento para el año 2025. En Miami-Dade, esto equivale a 117 millones de galones por día.

l 30 de enero, el alcalde de MiamiDade, Carlos Giménez, anunció un acuerdo con Florida Power and Light (FPL) para resolver el mayor desafío de infraestructura ambiental del condado: abordar el vertimiento de agua en el océano y su reutilización. Esta medida ayudaría al condado a cumplir con un mandato estatal para el 2025 que implica detener el vertimiento de aguas residuales al mar y en su lugar reutilizar cerca del 60 por ciento, aproximadamente 117 millones de galones por día.

El plan incluye la creación de un sistema avanzado de agua recuperada que permitiría la reutilización de hasta 60 millones de galones por día de aguas residuales del Condado.

Actualmente, el Condado vierte más de 100 millones de galones por día en el océano.

"Me enorgullece que el Condado de MiamiDade esté colaborando con Florida Power and Light y poder brindarle a nuestros 2.7 millones de residentes una solución viable y sustentable para nuestro desafío de aguas residuales", dijo el alcalde del Condado de Miami-Dade Carlos A. Giménez. "Nuestro Departamento de Agua y Alcantarillado está trabajando directamente con FPL para desarrollar un plan que aprovechará el agua desechada, lo que no solo beneficiará al medio ambiente sino también a todos los habitantes de Miami".

El acuerdo propuesto implica la modernización del complejo energético Turkey Point en el sur de Miami-Dade. Turkey Point actualmente incluye dos unidades de generación de energía nuclear de cero emisiones y una unidad de gas natural de alta eficiencia que genera energía limpia las 24 horas para millones de residentes de la Florida.

FPL intentará renovar las licencias operativas de estas dos unidades nucleares, lo que permitiría a las unidades operar hasta 2052 y 2053, y les ahorrará a los clientes de FPL miles de millones de dólares al evitar la necesidad de contar con otro sistema de generación de energía más costoso.

neficiosa tanto para FPL como para los residentes de la Florida", dijo la portavoz de FPL, Bianca Cruz. "Ayudaría a Miami-Dade a resolver su desafío ambiental, y al mismo tiempo el sistema serviría como suministro de agua para enfriar la unidad de gas natural de Turkey Point y ayudaría a restablecer la calidad del agua en los canales de enfriamiento que alimentan a las dos unidades de energía nuclear" agregó.

La energía libre de carbono generada por las unidades nucleares de Turkey Point previene más de 10 millones de toneladas de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero cada año, lo

que equivale a emisiones de carbono por el consumo de aproximadamente 1.000 millones de galones de gasolina.

Además de este compromiso ambiental, las operaciones de Turkey Point generan un beneficio económico anual de aproximadamente $1.7 mil millones, emplean a más de 800 trabajadores de tiempo completo y cientos de contratistas que viven en comunidades cercanas. Las interrupciones anuales de reabastecimiento de combustible requieren que más de 2.500 trabajadores acudan a la planta, beneficiando los sitios de hospedaje, restaurantes y cientos de otras empresas locales.

By 2025, the state law requires counties that now dump most of their wastewater offshore to begin reusing 60 percent. In Miami-Dade, that amounts to 117 million gallons a day.

n January 30, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced an agreement with Florida Power and Light (FPL) to solve the county’s biggest environmental infrastructure challenge: addressing ocean outfall and water reuse. This measure would help the county meet a 2025 state mandate to stop dumping wastewater offshore and instead reuse about 60 percent, approximately 117 million gallons a day.

The plan includes creating an advanced reclaimed-water system that would enable

the reuse of up to 60 million gallons a day of County wastewater. Currently, the County disposes of more than 100 million gallons a day in the ocean.

“I am proud to have Miami-Dade County partner with Florida Power and Light and bring our 2.7 million residents a viable, sustainable solution to our wastewater challenge,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Our Water and Sewer Department is working directly with FPL to develop a plan that will put otherwise wasted water to good use, which will not only

benefit the environment but also all Miamians.”

The proposed agreement involves the modernization of the Turkey Point energy complex in southern Miami-Dade. Turkey Point currently includes two zero-emissions nuclear generating units and one high-efficiency natural gas unit that generate clean energy around the clock for millions of Floridians.

FPL will apply to renew these two nuclear units’ operating licenses, which would allow the units to operate until 2052 and 2053 and save FPL customers billions of dollars by avoiding the need for other more expensive power generation.

“Reaching the agreement would be a winwin situation, both for FPL and Floridians,” said FPL spokeswoman Bianca Cruz. “It would help Miami-Dade solve its environmental challenge, while at the same time the system would serve as the source of water to cool Turkey Point’s natural gasfueled unit and help restore water quality in the cooling canals that serve the two nuclear-fueled units.”

The carbon-free energy generated by Turkey Point’s nuclear units prevents more than 10 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year—equivalent to the carbon emissions from the consumption of approximately 1 billion gallons of gasoline.

Moreover, building on this environmental commitment, Turkey Point operations generate an estimated $1.7 billion of economic output annually, employing more than 800 full-time employees and hundreds of contract workers who live in nearby communities. Annual refueling outages require more than 2,500 additional personnel to visit the plant, supporting local lodging, restaurants and hundreds of other local businesses.

raíz del trágico evento ocurrido el 14 de febrero donde se perdieron 17 vidas en Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School en Parkland, Florida, en la que se considera una de las masacres escolares más mortales en la historia de la nación, los líderes que representan al Condado de Miami-Dade están buscando apoyo del estado de Florida y solicitan $30 millones adicionales al año para reforzar la infraestructura de seguridad en las escuelas y mejorar los mecanismos para la prevención de futuras tragedias.

To Improve School Security In Parkland’s Aftermath, Miami-Dade County Leaders Want $29.8 million

n light of the tragic event that occurred on February 14 during which 17 lives were lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in what is now considered one of the deadliest school massacres in the nation’s history, leaders representing Miami-Dade County are seeking support from the state of Florida and are requesting an extra $30 million this year to further reinforce school campus security infrastructure and improve mechanisms for the prevention of future tragedies.

The request came in a letter sent to state House Speaker Richard Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron from MiamiDade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and multiple elected officials, including Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

The funding request seeks $10 million for an additional 100 members of the school system’s police force. $7.8 million to support mental health services which allow hiring 75 mental-health professionals and social workers and 4 mental health counselor advocates dedicated to providing counselling services to students exposed to violent crime.

Additionally, a multi-year request for equipment and building improvements that would cost $12 million the first year including the following: video surveillance systems and Internet protocol monitoring systems for school sites; evaluating classrooms for bulletproof glass; mechanisms to automatically lock classroom doors; cyber experts; social media data-mining and early detection software, etc.

Teachers will have to lock their classrooms during the school day, and all school security personnel will be required to wear a recognizable uniform. In addition, all students and personnel in secondary schools will be required to have and display identification badges, and a reduction in the points of entry to school sites for both employees and students, among other security measures, should be implemented.

“Sometimes moments of crisis urge us to act, and we have as we revisit our school safety protocols. As local leaders, this is a responsibility we take seriously and hold

ourselves accountable,” said Dr. Larry Feldman, member of the School Board of Miami-Dade County.

However, improved security measures at schools are not the only result of this tragic incident. A new movement, the #NeverAgain campaign, was formed by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s survivors in the aftermath of this tragedy. The group demanded legislative action to prevent similar shootings in the future and confronted Florida’s lawmakers to demand gun control reforms. So far, they have received massive attention all over the country and several high schools in Florida have walked out in support.

The group is planning a nationwide demonstration, “March for Our Lives,” scheduled for March 24th and will include a march in Washington, D.C.

s natural que a los niños y a los adolescentes les preocupe que les puedan ocurrir episodios de violencia en sus centros de estudios. Para ayudar a los niños a afrontar estos miedos, es importante hablarles sobre estas tragedias cuando ocurran y saber qué es lo que ellos escuchan y ven sobre ellas. Esto ayuda a poner la información sobre esas tragedias en su contexto.

Hable con su hijo Es importante que su hijo sienta que puede compartir sus sentimientos, y que sepa que sus miedos y ansiedades son comprensibles.

En vez de esperar a que su hijo le pida ayuda, considere la posibilidad de iniciar usted la conversación. Pregúntele qué sabe sobre esos sucesos y cómo se siente con respecto a ellos.

Ahora muchas escuelas disponen de programas para hacer frente a estos problemas, y tanto los profesores como la dirección están más preparados para proteger a sus alumnos de la violencia. ¿Cómo perciben los niños las noticias?

Por descontado, usted no es la única fuente de información sobre los tiroteos en las escuelas y otros acontecimientos trágicos que reciben la atención de los medios de comunicación. Es muy probable que los niños vean imágenes y oigan noticias en la televisión, la radio e Internet repetidamente, y esta información puede enseñarles a ver el mundo como un lugar confuso, amenazador e inhóspito.

A diferencia de las películas y de los programas de entretenimiento, las noticias son reales. Pero, en función de la edad del niño y de su nivel de madurez, es posible que no entienda todavía la diferencia entre realidad y fantasía. De todos modos, cuando alcanzan la edad de 7 u 8 años, lo que ven por televisión puede parecerles demasiado real.

Algunos niños pueden interiorizar la crudeza de algunas noticias sensacionalistas y transformarla en algo que podría ocurrirles a ellos.

Un niño que escucha una noticia sobre un tiroteo escolar se puede preocupar, pensando cosas como: "¿Podría ser yo el siguiente? ¿Podría pasarme a mí?".

La televisión tiene el efecto de encoger el mundo e introducirlo en nuestras salas de estar. Al concentrarse en las historias violentas, las noticias televisivas también pueden favorecer el síndrome del "mundo cruel", que puede llevar a los niños a hacer una interpretación errónea de cómo es el mundo y la sociedad actual. ¿Comentar las noticias?

Para calmar los miedos que pueden transmitir las noticias, los padres deben estar preparados para ofrecer lo que los psicólogos llaman "una información clara, calmada, ine-

quívoca, pero limitada". Esto significa decir la verdad, pero siempre en concordancia con el grado de nivel de desarrollo emocional de su hijo. La clave está en ser veraz, pero sin dar más detalles de los que le puedan interesar a su hijo o de los que él sea capaz de asimilar.

Aunque es verdad que algunas cosas no se pueden controlar, los padres deben dejar espacio a sus hijos para que puedan compartir sus miedos. Anime a su hijo a hablar abiertamente sobre lo que le asusta.

Es menos probable que los niños mayores y los adolescentes acepten las explicaciones de sus padres sin cuestionarlas. Su escepticismo incipiente sobre las noticias y sobre cómo se elaboran y se venden puede ocultar sus temores sobre los temas que cubren. 4. Prevea en qué momentos es necesario intervenir y evite los programas que no sean adecuados para la edad de su hijo o para su nivel de desarrollo.

erious incidents of school violence are terrible and frightening. Fortunately, they are rare. But it's natural for kids and teens to worry about whether something may happen to them or their friends.

To help them deal with these fears, it's important to talk about these tragedies when they happen, and to know what your kids watch or hear about them. This helps put frightening information into context.

Talking to Your Kids It's important for kids to feel like they can share their feelings, and know that their fears and worries are understandable.

Don't wait for your kids to approach you — consider starting the conversation. Ask what they understand and how they feel about it.

Share your own feelings too. During a tragedy, kids often look to adults for their reactions. It helps kids to know that they are not alone in feeling anxious. Knowing that their parents have similar feelings helps kids accept their own. At the same time, kids often need parents to help them feel safe.

What Schools Are Doing Talk with your kids about what schools do to help protect their students. Many schools are taking extra precautions — some focus on keeping weapons out through random locker and bag checks, limiting entry and exit points at the school, and keeping the entryways under teacher supervision. Others use metal detectors.

Lessons on how to deal with problems in non-violent ways have been added to many schools' courses. Peer counseling and other

programs help students learn to watch for signs that a fellow student might be becoming more troubled or violent.

Another thing that helps make schools safer is greater awareness of problems like bullying and discrimination. Many schools now have programs to fight these problems, and teachers and administrators know more about protecting students from violence.

Handling the Many Sources of News Kids and teens have many sources of information about school shootings or other tragic events. They might see or hear news stories or graphic images on TV, radio, or online, over and over. Such reports may teach them to view the world as a confusing, threatening, or unfriendly place.

The details of a news story about school violence can make some kids feel that might happen to them. A child might worry, "Could I be next? Could that happen to me?"

To calm fears, be prepared to tell the truth, but in a way that fits your child's emotional level. Don't go into more detail than your child is interested in or can handle.

Although it's true that some things can't be controlled, parents should still give kids the space to share their fears. Encourage them to talk openly about what scares them.

Older kids and teens are less likely to accept an explanation at face value. Their budding skepticism might hide the fact that they're bothered about a story. Your willingness to listen will send a powerful message and help them cope with these fears.

Tips for Parents

1.- Know where your kids get news and information, whether they're watching TV or going online.

2.- Recognize that news doesn't have to be driven by disturbing pictures. Public television programs, newspapers, or newsmagazines specifically designed for kids can be less sensational — and less upsetting — ways for them to get information.

3.- Put news stories in proper context.

Showing that violent events are isolated or explaining how one event relates to another helps kids make better sense of what they hear.

4. Know when guidance is needed and avoid shows that aren't appropriate for your child's age or level of development.

unque catalogados como una banda de Rock, el sonido de 3RG Miami es una fusión de Rock, Reggae y Funk con ritmos latinos. Pero tal y como dice Rylo, voz líder y fundador de la banda: “si queremos definir nuestro estilo en una palabra, no podemos”. Y ese es precisamente el encanto de 3RG Miami, una banda con la habilidad de hacer transición entre diversos géneros ofreciendo variedad a su público.

Sus diversos estilos son el legado de los distintos gustos musicales de su fundador y los otros cuatro miembros de la banda, quienes se han visto influenciados por la música de Journey o de Guns N’ Roses, e indudablemente por los ritmos latinos como la salsa de Frankie Ruiz, pasando por el merengue dominicano hasta llegar a la balada pop de Luis Miguel.

La banda se formó hace 5 años en Miami con miembros originarios de Puerto Rico, de allí nació su nombre 3RG, cuando en broma se referían a 3 Ricans and the Girl. Hoy en día 3RG Miami no sólo es una de las bandas locales más reconocida en el Sur de la Florida, sino que está traspasando las fronteras y ya suenan en varios países de Latinoamérica, Europa e incluso Asia.

3RG Miami empezó como una banda de covers y hace año y medio decidieron lanzar su primer sencillo “Loca”, que se ha escuchado a través de streaming por todo el mundo en lugares tan diversos como Filipinas, Sudáfrica, Italia, Noruega, Brasil y México, entre otros. En palabras de Rylo, “Loca nos abrió las puertas a nuevos fans y nos dio reconocimiento a nivel internacional, es sobrecogedor tener fans fuera de Miami que disfrutan y gozan de nuestra música” agregó.

Después de “Loca” empezó la producción de nuevas canciones tan diversas como su público, tales como “Cheese Factory”, con una notable influencia rítmica del Funk y el Reggae, “Fo, Que Peste” que con sus riffs de guitarra lleva al público al Hard Rock de los 80´s, para pasar a una balada pop de letra romántica acompañada de melancólicos acordes de piano en “No me Digas”.

Precisamente, “No me Digas” ha tenido un éxito arrollador sobrepasando el cuarto millón de reproducciones en Facebook desde su lanzamiento en diciembre pasado. Y todo parece indicar que la balada es tendencia en la banda para principio del 2018, ya que en febrero lanzaron su nueva canción ‘Sin Ti No Hay Luz’, “una balada pop bien tropical, bien rica, que se podría bailar incluso como una bachata” expresó Rylo, y que muy seguramente continuará con el éxito de su predecesora.

A Latin Rock Band That Is Crossing Borders

lthough considered a Rock band, 3RG’s music does not fit into a music style; Spanish rock, reggae and funk are infused with Latin rhythms. But as Rylo, lead singer and founder member, says, “If we were to define our style in one word, we couldn’t.” And that is precisely the charm of 3RG Miami, a band with the ability to transition seamlessly between genres offering something for everyone.

3RG’s varied music style is based on the different influences of Rylo and the other four members, ranging from Journey or Guns ‘N’ Roses to Latin rhythms such as Frankie Ruiz’s salsa; moving seamlessly from Dominican Merengue to Luis Miguel’s pop ballads.

The band started five years ago in Miami, and the name 3RG was a joke meaning three Ricans and the Girl. Nowadays, 3RG Miami is not only one of the most active bands in South Florida, but also their music has crossed borders with new followers in Latin America, Europe and even Asia.

Even though they started as a cover band, a year and a half ago they launched their first single “Loca” that was streamed regularly by fans all over the world including Philippines, South Africa, Italy, Norway, Brazil and Mexico, among others.

In Rylo’s words, “’Loca’ introduced our music to new fans and gave us international recognition, it’s awesome to have fans outside of Miami who enjoy our music,” he added.

Following their first hit, the band started working on new songs that included different musical styles, such as “Cheese Factory”, with a remarkable Funk and Reggae influence; “Fo, Que Peste”, taking their audience back to the ‘80s hard-rock scene, or “No me Digas”, a romantic pop ballad in which the piano brings a touch of nostalgia.

Indeed, “No Me Digas” had an overwhelming success exceeding the 4 million views on Facebook since its launch last December. It seems that pop ballad is their first option nowadays, as they released last February their new song “Sin Tí No Hay Luz”, “a romantic ballad with tropical influence that could be danced even as a Bachata,” said Rylo. We are sure the song will follow the success of “No Me Digas”.
