Educación en casa Una alternativa diferente para aprender

¿

ómo sería si el aula de clase fuera el comedor o la sala de la casa donde vive el estudiante? ¿Si el área del recreo fuera el jardín de su residencia o el parque más cercano? ¿O si los compañeros de estudio fueran sus propios hermanos?

Esta es una realidad que viven muchos niños. Una opción muy beneficiosa para quienes no pueden asistir a la escuela por problemas de enfermedad, discapacidad o tener que viajar continuamente. Sin embargo, otros menores que no tienen ninguno de estos inconvenientes también están recibiendo clases en sus casas. ¿Pero por qué sus padres han decidido ser los profesores de sus hijos?. Muchos prefieren alejarlos del rigor académico, que aprendan a su ritmo y sin competitividad o que sacien su curiosidad leyendo, explorando un museo o empapándose de la naturaleza.

El Centro Nacional de Estadísticas de Educación de Estados Unidos (NCES por sus siglas en inglés), reveló que el 91% de los padres mostraban su preocupación por la convivencia dentro de la escuela pública, el 77% hablaban de la educación en valores y el 74% mostraban su deseo de ofrecer conocimientos académicos de calidad. “No entiendo como un niño pasa seis horas en un pupitre y se les bombardea con tareas para dejarlos estar otro tanto de horas sentados en la casa”, nos cuenta Susana Taylor , quien quiso probar durante un año, a ver como resultaba cuando Sara, su hija mayor tenía cinco años y Tomas, el segundo, tres años. Ocho años después, aquí seguimos”, explica orgullosa.

Este sistema educativo conocido como escuela en casa es actualmente muy común y legal en los 50 estados de Estados Unidos.

Según datos publicados por NCES entre 2003 y 2012 el número de niños estadounidenses entre los 5 y los 17 años que estudian en casa aumentó un 61,8 por ciento.

“Yo me levanto temprano y a las 9:00 am hacemos la rutina de desayuno, vestirnos, hacer camas, lavar dientes, etc. Y después en el jardín hacemos ejercicios de estiramiento para luego hacer cada uno lo que le corresponde en ese momento. Es decir, no tenemos clases por asignaturas, sino que cada niño sigue sus propios intereses y va avanzando según su ritmo", comenta Susana.

Por ejemplo, continua, Sara de 13 años, es una lectora consumada y devora novelas

desde hace muchos años, a través de los libros he logrado trabajar muchas asignaturas con ella, de manera que la literatura es la excusa para hablar de temas de historia, de filosofía, de lengua, hasta, incluso, de física. Entre tanto, Tomas de 11 años, es un apasionado por la construcción y dedica la mañana a sus proyectos, creando todo tipo de máquinas y artefactos a base de cartón y otros materiales reciclables, siempre con su pistola de silicona en mano. Tres tardes por semana tenemos actividades extraescolares, que consisten en diversos deportes y la pintura".

La legislación varía mucho según los estados: unos obligan a exámenes periódicos para comprobar si el niño está a su nivel; en otros basta con el informe de un tutor. En Washington y Iowa se han abierto los dos primeros centros de recursos para padres que enseñan en casa.

Estados Unidos, Canadá y Australia están a la vanguardia y Gran Bretaña lleva la voz cantante en Europa. Esto ha dejado ver que esta alternativa diferente de enseñar cada día gana terreno. Tanto así que Harvard ha sido la primera Universidad en abrir un departamento para acceso de los que estudian en la casa.

Home Schooling A Learning Alternative

ow would you like it if the classroom were the dining room or the living room of the student's home? If the recreation area was the garden of a residence or the nearest park? Or if his study peers were his own siblings?

That is the reality that many children live: a beneficial option for those who cannot attend school due to illness, disability or continuous travel. However, other children who do not have any of those situations are also receiving classes in their homes.

Why have their parents decided to be the teachers of their own children? Many parents prefer to distance their children from the classroom academic rigor. For them to learn at their own pace without competitiveness or to satisfy their curiosity by reading, exploring a museum or mother nature.

The National Center for Education Statistics in the United States (NCES) found that 91% of parents who homeschooled their children expressed concern about the public schools’ environment, 77% talked about teaching values, 74% showed their desire to offer quality academic education, and 44% wanted an alternative way of learning for their children.

“I do not understand how a child spends six hours at a desk and then he is bombarded with homework and has to spend a few more hours sitting in the house," says Susana Taylor, who wanted to try home schooling for a year to see how it was. Her eldest daughter, Sara, was five-years old and her son Tomas was three-years old. Eight years later, we are still doing it,” she says proudly.

This way of educating children is known as home schooling. It is nowadays permitted and legal in all 50 states of the United States of America (U.S.A). Per data published

by NCES, between 2003 and 2012, the number of American children ages 5 to 17 who were being home schooled increased by 61.8%.

“I get up early and at 9 a.m. We have breakfast, get dressed, make the beds, and brush our teeth. We go to the garden to do stretching exercises and then each child starts working on whatever inspires him or her at that moment. In other words, we do not have classes by subjects. Instead, children follow their own interests and they progress at their own pace,” says Susana.

“For example, Sara, who is now 13 years old, is a consummate reader and has devou-

red novels for many years. It is through books that I have managed to work many subjects with her. Studying literature is an excuse to talk about history, philosophy, language, and even physics. In the meantime, 11-year-old Tomas is passionate about construction and dedicates the mornings to his projects, creating all kinds of machines and artifacts made of cardboard and other recyclable materials. He is always with his silicone gun at hand. Three afternoons a week, we have extracurricular activities, which consist of various sports and painting.”

Home schooling legislation varies by state: some require periodic examinations to check if the child is at his academic level; in others, a report from a tutor would be sufficient. In Washington State and Iowa, the first two resource centers have opened for parents who teach their children at home.

When it comes to home schooling, the U.S.A., Canada and Australia are at the forefront and Britain is the leading country in Europe. That shows that this learning alternative is gaining ground. So much that Harvard University has been the first to open a department to provide access to those who study at home.

la 1:30 de la mañana, mientras todos duermen y la luna aun brilla en el inmenso cielo de Miami, un joven de 21 años, con grandes sueños y retos comienza su día.

Nos referimos a Lázaro Cordero, a lo mejor una persona anónima para algunos, pero para otros todo un ejemplo de sacrifico y esfuerzo a seguir. Su meta llegar a forma parte del equipo Olímpico de natación de Estados Unidos. Su particularidad ser sobreviviente de cáncer y en el proceso haber perdido su pierna izquierda hace cuatro años. Sin embargo, esta discapacidad no frenó las ganas de hacer la diferencia.

Dejando de lado su ajetreada agenda tomó un tiempo para contarnos como es un día en la vida de Lázaro, quien además está estudiando arquitectura en el Miami Dade College del Campus de Homestead, Su día inicia desde la madrugada, de 2:00 am a 4:30 am hace pesas en el gimnasio y luego de 5:00 am a 7:30 am practica en la piscina.

A partir de las 8 de la mañana se sumerge dentro de la vida universitaria. Pero a las 3:00 deja sus cuadernos por las pesas y de 5:00 pm a 7:30 pm se pone su traje de baño para practicar en el agua.

A las 8 de la noche llega a su casa para cenar y prepararse para dormir, aproximadamente dormirá 5 horas, descanso suficiente para continuar con su rutina los 5 días de la semana, porque los

fines de semana los dedicará a competir con su equipo paralímpico.

“Por mi limitación tengo que esforzarme el doble, en sacrificio, en tiempo y trabajo para estar al nivel de las personas que tienen sus dos piernas” comentó Cordero originario de San Miguel del Padrón en la capital cubana, quien a sus 17 años él mismo tomó la dura decisión que era mejor que le amputaran su pierna.

Sin embargo, no fue sino hace tres años atrás mientras estaba en el parque aprendiendo a caminar con su nueva prótesis cuando vio al equipo de natación practicando y decidió hablar con el entrenador Yan Martínez.

“El me motivó para que formara parte del equipo, pero antes me advirtió que debía sacrificarme y el proceso sería duro pero que podría lograr ser alguien por medio de la natación”.

Actualmente es miembro de Devilrays Swim Club, una entidad sin fines de lucro que lleva 13 años ofreciendo clases de natación a niños y jóvenes de bajos recursos en las áreas de Cutler Bay y Homestead, en Miami Dade.

A pesar de su corta carrera, ha logrado grandes resultados con medallas en varios eventos, incluyendo el Florida Gold Coast Swimming, ubicándose actualmente en el número 2 en el ranking de Estados Unidos y entre los 10 mejores del mundo en su categoría.

Con esos resultados su sueño de formar parte del equipo Olímpico casi lo puede palpar, tiene

los mejores tiempos, el rendimiento y las competencias en las que ha estado ha demostrado que tiene todo lo que se necesita. Sin embargo, una cirugía en su pierna le impidió participar en los Juegos Panamericanos del 2015, dilatando así su ansiada meta. Un año después solo espera la oportunidad de competir y ganar su pase al equipo estadounidense.

Al oírlo hablar percibimos no solo una gran madurez a pesar de su corta edad, sino firme entereza en que todo lo que se proponga lo va a lograr. Entre sus planes a futuro está el darle un nuevo giro a la natación paralímpica. “Quiero que las personas brinden apoyo a los nadadores con discapacidad, por eso es importante que conozcan más sobre la historia de nosotros, que se familiaricen con nuestro programa y de cómo hacemos las cosas para que entiendan que a pesar de que tenemos una discapacidad podemos y vamos a hacer la diferencia” Es claro que este joven nos da una gran lección de vida que cuando se quiere se puede. “Mi mensaje hoy para muchas personas que están atravesando una discapacidad física es que vean el ejemplo del equipo paralímpico que, si nosotros podemos, ellos también podrán.

Nada es imposible solo hay que tener fe y las ganas de salir adelante con sacrificio y de triunfar”, concluye Lázaro, quien volverá a su rutina para terminar un día más ejercitando su voluntad de hierro.

t is 1:30 in the morning and while everyone else sleeps and the moon still shines in the immense sky of Miami, a 21-year-old man with big dreams and challenges begins his day.

We refer to Lazaro Cordero, maybe not a well-known youngster for some, but for others an example of sacrifice and effort to be followed. Even though he is a cancer survivor who lost his left leg four years ago, his goal is to become part of the United States Olympic Swimming team, for the disability has not stopped him from his desire to make a difference.

He is currently pursuing an architectural degree at Miami-Dade College, Homestead Campus. Taking time from his busy schedule, he shares with us what his typical day looks like. He begins before dawn. From 2 to 4:30 a.m., he lifts weights at the gym, and from 5 to 7:30 a.m., he practices in the swimming pool.

From eight in the morning, he immerses himself in his university studies. By 3 p.m., he puts aside his books and works with dumbbells. From 5 to 7:30 p.m., he puts on his bathing suit to practice in the water again. Around 8 p.m., he arrives at his house to have dinner and to get ready to go to bed. He then sleeps about five hours, which will be enough rest to continue with his routine for five days. During the weekends, he competes with his Paralympics team.

“Because of my limitation, I must sacrifice more, dedicate more time, and work harder to be at the same level with people who have both legs,” said Cordero, who is originally from San Miguel del Padron in the Cuban capital. At the age of 17, he made the difficult decision to have his leg amputated.

It was not until three years ago, when he was in a park learning to walk with his new prosthesis, that he saw the swimming team practicing and decided to talk to coach Yan Martinez. “He motivated me to be part of the team and warned me that I had to sacrifice myself and that the process would be hard, but that I

could be someone through swimming.”

He is currently a member of the Devilrays Swim Club, a 13-year-old, non-profit organization that offers swimming lessons to underprivileged children and youth in the Cutler Bay and Homestead areas in Miami-Dade County.

Despite his short swimming career, he has achieved great results, winning medals in several events, including the Florida Gold Coast Swimming, currently ranking No. 2 in the United States and among the 10 best in the world in his category.

With those results, he feels that his dream of being part of the Olympic team is almost here. He has the best swimming times, performance and skills that show he has everything that is needed.

However, surgery on his leg prevented him from participating in the Pan American Games in 2015, delaying the achievement of his goal. A year from now, he waits for the opportunity to compete and win his ticket to the American team.

When we hear him, we perceive not only a great maturity despite his young age, but strength in everything that he sets out to achieve. Among his plans is to give a new meaning to Paralympics swimming. “I want people to support swimmers with disabilities, so it’s important that they know more about our history, that they become familiar with our program and how we do things, so they understand that even though we have disabilities, we can and we will make a difference.”

This young man gives us a great lesson in life that when there is a will, there is a way. “My message today to people who are experiencing physical disabilities is to look at the example of the Paralympics team and to realize that if we can do it, they can do it too. Nothing is impossible.

You just have to have faith and the desire to get ahead with sacrifice and to succeed,” concludes Lázaro, who will return to his routine to end one more day exercising his iron will.

a manera más importante de mantenerse sano es participar activamente en el cuidado de su propia salud. ¿Qué queremos decir con esto? Que usted mismo debe estar al tanto de su historial médico. En la medida de lo posible que esto sea una realidad, mejores resultados obtendrá a la hora de visitar a su médico. Es lo que los expertos conocen como ser un buen paciente.

A continuación el doctor Joaquín Barbara brinda una serie de consejos que podrían ayudarle a colaborar con su médico y mejorar su atención.

1. Piense lo que le va a decir al médico. Si es su primera visita, el médico le hará una serie de preguntas: qué le pasa, desde cuándo, qué enfermedades han tenido previamente tanto usted como sus familiares cercanos, qué hábitos tiene (tabaco, alcohol..).

Asegúrese de saber las respuestas. Si es necesario anótelas para que no pase nada por alto.

2. Lleve todos los informes médicos, radiografías y/o análisis que tenga. Lo peor que puede pasar es que su médico no los necesite, pero generalmente son muy útiles. Es de gran ayuda guardar todos esos informes en una carpeta y llevarlos a la consulta.

3. No oculte información. Sepa cuándo tuvo una cirugía, qué tipo de cirugía fue y dónde se hizo. Si ha sido hospitalizado, debe saber cuándo y por qué razón.

4. Lleve una lista con los medicamentos que toma incluya el nombre, la dosis y la frecuencia de cada uno.

5. Tenga una lista actualizada de alergias. Incluya a que es alérgico, así como lo que sucedió cuando recibió esa reacción alérgica y cuánto tiempo atrás era.

Tenga cuidado, muchas veces un paciente informa como alergia un efecto secundario de la medicación.

6. Enfóquese en el problema. Si usted va al médico para un problema agudo (por ejemplo, un dolor de oído o dolor abdominal) no espere también discutir varios otros problemas crónicos.

7. Intente averiguar con la mayor precisión qué enfermedades han tenido sus familiares más cercanos.

Muchas veces dicen “mi padre tuvo un cáncer de estómago”. No es lo mismo estómago que colon o páncreas y esto puede ser determinante para que su médico decida si usted tiene que hacerse pruebas o no.

8. Si le recetan un medicamento muy caro llame a su médico y discuta con él si hay alternativas menos costosas a la medicación que le recetaron. Frecuentemente, los medicamentos más antiguos serán significativamente más baratos que los medicamentos nuevos.

9. Haga preguntas. Usted tiene derecho a que todas sus preguntas sean respondidas por sus profesionales de la salud. Haga preguntas acerca de los nuevos medicamentos que se han recetado, para qué sirven y cuáles son los efectos secundarios comunes de cada uno de ellos.

10. Busque un doctor de atención primaria que le guste. Es muy importante que tenga una buena relación con su médico. Si se siente inhibido por la personalidad o si él se apresura y no le escucha, busque uno nuevo.

Make the Most of Your Visit to the Doctor

n important way to stay healthy is to actively participate in the care of your own health. What do we mean by this? It means that you should be aware of your own medical history to get the best results when you visit your doctor.

It is what experts call being a good patient.

Below is a series of tips offered by doctor Joaquin Barbara that could help you collaborate with your doctor and get his undivided attention.

1. Think about what you are going to tell the doctor. If it is your first visit, the doctor will ask you many questions: what happened to you, since when, what diseases you and/or a close relative have previously had, what habits you have (smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol). Make sure you know the answers. If necessary, write them down so that nothing is overlooked.

2. Take all medical reports. Take X-rays and/or tests you have had in the past. The worst thing that can happen is that your doctor does not need them, but they are ge-

nerally very useful. It helps to save all those reports in a folder and take them the date of your visit.

3. Do not hide information. Know when you had surgery, what type of surgery it was, and where it was done. If you have been hospitalized, you should know when and for what reason.

4. Keep a list of the medications you take. The list should include name, dosage and frequency of each.

5. Keep an up-to-date list of allergies.

Include what you are allergic to as well as what happened when you suffered the allergic reaction and how long ago it was. Be careful; many times, a patient reports a side effect to a medication as an allergy.

6. Focus on the problem. If you go to the doctor for an acute problem (for example, an earache or abdominal pain) do not expect to discuss other chronic problems as well.

7. Try to find out with great accuracy what illnesses your closest relatives may

have had. Many times, they say "my father had stomach cancer." It is not the same as cancer in the colon or in the pancreas. That can be a determining factor for your doctor to decide whether you need to be tested.

8. If you are prescribed a very expensive medication, call your doctor. Discuss with him whether there are less expensive alternatives to the medication he has prescribed. Older drugs are often significantly cheaper than new drugs.

9. Ask questions. You have the right to have all your questions answered by your health professionals. Ask questions about the new medications that have been prescribed, what they are for and what the common side effects of each are.

10. Find a primary care doctor that you like. It is very important that you have a good relationship with your doctor. If you feel inhibited by his or her personality or if he or she rushes and does not pay attention to you, look for another doctor.

o se sorprenda en su próximo chequeo anual si su médico le dice que le está haciendo una prueba de VIH. El está haciendo lo que Florida Department of Health in Broward County espera que cada médico haga.

DOH-Broward y los Centros de prevención y control de enfermedades están pidiendo a los proveedores médicos que incluyan la prueba del VIH como parte rutinaria de los análisis de sangre de todos los pacientes, al igual que el azúcar en la sangre, el colesterol y los triglicéridos.

La prueba de rutina de VIH significa que más personas que viven con VIH serán diagnosticadas temprano, pueden comenzar el tratamiento rápidamente, serán más saludables y tendrán menos probabilidades de propagar el virus. Además, las pruebas de rutina ayudarán a eliminar cualquier estigma en las pruebas de VIH. "La prueba de rutina significa que a todo el mundo se les ofrecería pruebas de VIH como parte de nuestros chequeos regulares. Nadie debe sentirse estigmatizado ", dice la Dra. Paula Thaqi, Directora de DOH-Broward.

El CDC recomienda realizar exámenes de rutina para todas las personas de 13 a 65 años de edad, y otras personas que participan en relaciones sexuales sin protección. El CDC comenzó a recomendar pruebas de rutina para algunas personas en 1987 y para todo el mundo a partir del 2006.

El CDC y el DOH-Broward le gustaría ver las pruebas de rutina realizadas por médicos, hospitales (incluyendo salas de emergencia), clínicas y otros proveedores médicos.

on’t be surprised at your next annual checkup if your doctor says she’s giving you an HIV test.

She is doing what the Florida Department of Health in Broward County hopes every doctor will do. DOH-Broward and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are asking medical providers to include HIV testing as a routine part of all patients’ blood tests, just like blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Routine HIV testing means more people living with HIV will be diagnosed early, can begin treatment quickly, will be healthier and will be less likely to spread the virus. Also, routine testing will help eliminate any stigma on HIV tests.

“Routine testing means that everyone would be offered HIV testing as part of our regular checkups. No one should feel stigmatized,” says Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of DOH-Broward. “We encourage everyone to ask their doctor for an HIV test.”

The CDC recommends routine testing for all people ages 13 to 65, and others if they engaged in unprotected sex. The CDC began recommending routine testing for some people in 1987 and for everyone starting in 2006.

The CDC and DOH-Broward would like to see routine testing performed by physicians, hospitals (including emergency rooms), clinics and other medical providers.

The way it works is the doctor mentions the HIV test when telling patients what will be covered in their blood work. The test will be done unless the patient

specifically declines it – a practice known as opt-out testing.

Not every medical provider participates in routine testing. Some are not aware of the recommendations.

Some may feel it is not their job. Some may be too busy to focus on it.

In recent years, DOH-Broward has been educating and encouraging providers and institutions to implement routine testing. As a result, routine testing is on the rise.

A big argument in favor of routine testing is that HIV is spread mainly by people who do not know they contracted it. If they are diagnosed and take medication as directed, the amount of virus in their blood falls to nearly zero – and their chance of transmitting HIV drops by 95 percent.

Preventing the spread of the virus is crucial in South Florida, which has the nation’s highest rate of new HIV cases per capita.

“Knowing your HIV status and getting treatment is one of the best ways we know to prevent HIV and keep our community healthy,” Dr. Thaqi says. “Everyone can do their part by including an HIV test in their routine health care.”

D I R E CT I O N S: Heat oven to 350 F. On baking sheet, spread bread in single layer and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Bake 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and set aside.

In bowl, whisk together garlic, mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper with remaining olive oil to make vinaigrette.

In large bowl, toss ingredients together, making sure to coat all ingredients with vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

Según Díaz, el trabajar en el área de los seguros, es para él una vocación, la cual decidió seguir hace más de dos décadas, pero aun es más importante para él, que la comunidad latina aprenda de la importancia de un tener un seguro de vida. “La póliza de vida asegura el futuro de la familia. He tenido varios clientes, especialmente clientes jóvenes, que nunca piensan que algo les puede pasar. No compran la póliza de vida y luego ocurre una tragedia, y muchas veces dejan a su pareja e hijos sin ninguna protección en un momento muy difícil".

De acuerdo con Díaz, muchas personas llegan a este país en busca del sueño americano, pero no saben cómo proteger ese sueño, ni cómo proteger sus cosas, y su misión es enseñarles cómo hacerlo a través de los seguros.

Recientemente, Díaz, quien es hijo de inmigrantes cubanos, abrió una segunda agencia de seguros State Farm para ofrecer sus servicios a más familias de la zona.

La oficina que está ubicada en el 2431 SW 147th Avenue, Miami, FL 33185, va a servir también para dar entrenamiento a los estudiantes de secundaria de esa área, que quieran hacer una carrera en el mercado de los seguros.

Diaz, who is the son of Cuban immigrants, recently opened his second State Farm insurance agency to offer his services to people and families in the area.

ferent initiatives that support various causes that range from supporting churches to helping organizations that assist people with disabilities.

la gente haga menos ejercicio hoy en día es porque pasa mucho tiempo delante de distintos tipos de pantallas: viendo la televisión, frente al ordenador, utilizando móviles o smartphones, jugando a videojuegos, etc. Limita el tiempo de ocio que pasas frente a las pantallas a menos de 2 horas al día. Si te paseas con tus amigos por las tiendas comerciales, harás más ejercicio que si les envías mensaje de texto desde tu habitación.

Weight loss is most likely to be successful when people change their habits, replacing old, unhealthy ones with new, healthy behaviors. Here are 5 ways to make that happen: Exercise. Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle both of which help you look and feel good and keep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, increase the intensity of your workout and add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren't exercising.

Watch out for portion distortion. Big portions pile on extra calories that cause weight gain. Sugary beverages, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks, are empty calories that also contribute to obesity. So choose smaller portions (or share restaurant portions) and go for water or low-fat milk instead of soda.

Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Fruits and veggies are about more than just vitamins and minerals. They're also packed with fiber, which means they fill you up. And when you fill up on fruits and veggies, you're less likely to overeat.

Don't skip breakfast. Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism, burning calories from the get-go and giving you energy to do more during the day. People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast.
