Con el año escolar a la vuelta de la esquina es vital considerar los consejos de expertos sobre el bienestar mental de nuestros hijos y prepararlos para la reapertura de las escuelas. l brote de coronavirus ha causado interrupciones significativas en la vida diaria y los niños sienten estos cambios profundamente. En julio, la Junta Escolar de Miami-Dade aprobó por unanimidad un plan que exige que las Escuelas Públicas roten entre cursos presenciales, en línea e híbridos, dependiendo de que el condado esté en la Fase 2 de su plan de reapertura. Sin embargo, si el condado aún se encuentra en la Fase 1 para el comienzo del año escolar el 24 de agosto, la escolarización se llevará a cabo completamente en línea.

En los últimos meses, Monarch All Health ha visto un aumento en los casos de ansiedad en los niños. Prepare Your Child Emotionally With the school year just around the corner, it is vital to consider advice from experts about our children’s mental well-being and prepare them for school reopening.

he coronavirus outbreak has caused significant disruptions to daily life, and children are feeling these changes deeply. Although children appear to be less prone to be infected by the coronavirus than adults, they may be more fragile from a psychological viewpoint and present anxiety, behavioral problems, and fear due to isolation.

While returning to school will be welcome and exciting for many children, others will feel anxious or frightened. Dr. Rina Santiago-Guia, co-founder and Clinical Director at Monarch All Health in Homestead, suggests taking a personal approach depending on each child’s age group, as a child under the age of five behaves differently than older kids.

However, one of the essential aspects that parents should consider is to prepare their children for the changes that they will face when schools reopen. “Parents need to find out what’s the school district procedure for reopening and to let the kids know how things are going to be, so they can follow instructions from teachers accordingly, she said.

In July, the Miami-Dade School Board unanimously approved a plan that calls for Miami-Dade Public Schools to rotate among in-person, online and hybrid courses, depending on the county being in Phase 2 of its reopening plan. However, if the county is still in Phase 1 by the start of the school year on August 24, schooling would be held entirely online.

In the latest months, Monarch All Health has seen an increase in anxiety cases in children. “Lots of kids are having severe anxiety issues because they’re concerned their parents are going to die, or something bad will happen to them. This is likely to be causally related to how we explain this situation to children,” she added.

It is very challenging for children under five to understand that there is a virus that can cause harm and can even cause death. It is very difficult to explain that without creating anxiety and fear among them. “Parents should keep it simple, especially when explaining to children over the age of five, that there is a virus and, therefore, we should all be careful. Because the more information that you give, the more anxiety will likely be caused in that child.”

It is important to set clear expectations about what they will experience when returning to school. When children know what to

expect, it can go a long way toward soothing any worries they may have about leaving home and going to school. It is also recommended to have open communication about this new phase and to let the children know that these changes are not going to be for life, but are temporary.

“Parents right now need to be very aware of their children’s behavior through listening and communicating. Listen to what they have to say and talk their feelings out. Ask them: How do you feel with these changes? What are your thoughts? Do it daily and expand from there,” Dr. Rina recommended.

"Este cambio no tendrá un impacto monetario en el contribuyente. Los residentes de Homestead no verán aumentar sus impuestos generales debido al movimiento de la linea de impuestos de la biblioteca. Sus impuestos simplemente se asignarán a la ciudad en lugar del condado. El impacto real es que ahora los residentes de Homestead van a tener esta nueva biblioteca que no tenían antes", agregó Zackery Good, Oficial de Información Pública de la ciudad de Homestead.

"El Cybrarium traerá a Homestead una biblioteca pública ultramoderna que cierra la

Library Tax to Move

from County to City

This change is not going to have a monetary impact on the taxpayer.

The real impact is a brand-new library for Homestead residents. his year’s property tax, also known as millage rate, will take into account some new budget realities that will mainly reflect the movement of the library tax from the county to the city line item on the resident’s tax bill. But what does that mean, and how is it going to impact taxpayers?

It means that the city’s millage rate will be going up, and even though this may sound scary, this does not represent an overall tax increase. The millage rate must increase to accommodate the move of the library tax millage from the county to the city.

The city’s millage rate will absorb the library tax because the city is now responsible for operating the brandnew Homestead library, the “Cybrarium,” which is scheduled to open later this year. In March 2019, the city council voted to enter into an agreement with Miami-Dade County, in which the city would leave the MiamiDade County Library District effective October 1, 2020.

“This change is not going to have a monetary impact on the taxpayer. Homestead residents are not going to see their overall taxes increase due to the

movement of the library tax line item.

Their taxes are just going to be allocated to the City rather than the County.

The real impact is that now Homestead residents are going to have this brandnew library that they didn’t have before,” added Zackery Good, City of Homestead Public Information Officer.

“The Cybrarium will bring Homestead an ultra-modern public library that bridges the gap between literacy and cutting-edge technology,” reads the City of Homestead website. The Cybrarium is currently under construction on Mowry Drive next to Homestead Station. The opening date hasn’t been announced yet and may be subject to change due to COVID-19.

A temporary millage cap was set on July 22, 2020, at the council meeting and is not the final millage rate. This cap was established as a temporary maximum to provide flexibility in preparing the Fiscal Year 2021 budget due to uncertain state-shared revenue reductions because of COVID-19.

“We will be setting the final budget this month, and we’ll have two budget hearings in September where the City Council will vote on the final millage rate,” added Mr. Zackery Good.

l 30 de septiembre se vence el plazo para completar el censo 2020 y paralelamente a mediados de mes empieza la celebración del mes de la herencia hispana, donde se evocan los logros, aportes y contribuciones de los hispanos en el país. El censo se manifiesta en medio de la celebración como una oportunidad para los latinos de asegurar que su voz siga siendo escuchada.

Sin embargo, son tiempos difíciles para que la comunidad participe en mayor parte debido a la emergencia del Covid-19 que ha venido afectando al sur de la Florida significativamente. Aún así, la oficina del censo ha venido trabajando en los últimos meses con la necesidad de llevar a cabo el censo y ha ajustado sus protocolos y programación para cumplir con su objetivo de contar adecuadamente a la población.

Las cifras hablan por si solas, Miami-Dade se está quedando atrás en su respuesta al censo lo que podría llevar a menos fondos federales y subvenciones que se asignan a cada comunidad. Miami-Dade ocupa el puesto 31 entre 67 condados en el estado. Mientras que el promedio nacional de personas que completan el censo es del 63 por ciento, solo el 58 por ciento de las personas en MiamiDade habían respondido para mediados de agosto.

“Entendemos que el sur de Florida se ha visto fuertemente afectado por Covid-19. Sin embargo, nos aseguramos de llevar a cabo este censo de la mejor manera posible”, comentó Manuel Landivar, subdirector del Censo Regional. “Tenemos personal trabajando, dándole seguimiento a las personas que no han respondido, y observando los protocolos de salud

Desde el 11 de agosto los censistas empezaron a visitar los hogares en South Miami-Dade mientras que la oficina del censo ha estado entrenando personal continuamente. Calculan que tanto North Miami como South Miami, las oficinas como está dividido el censo en Miami-Dade, tendrán de 1000 a 1200 encuestadores visitando los hogares hasta el 30 de septiembre.

Según Manuel Landivar, la prioridad es que las personas respondan por su propia cuenta, ya sea en línea, por teléfono, o por correo. “Invitamos a las personas que contesten principalmente por estos medios, en donde el plazo es también hasta el 30 de septiembre. Así evitan que un encuestador toque a su puerta, beneficiándonos no solo en la reducción de los costos, sino que les tomará menos tiempo”.

Sin embargo, si un encuestador llama a su puerta tenga la seguridad que se han implementado todos los protocolos de seguridad para proteger al equipo como a los residentes.

“El encuestador toca a la puerta y se asegura de mantener la distancia física fuera de la residencia. No entran a la casa. Esta es una entrevista corta de menos de diez minutos”, aseguró Manuel.

Estas próximas tres semanas son muy criticas para asegurar el apoyo de la comunidad latina de MiamiDade en la consecución del censo.

“Si todos participamos del censo, más beneficios obtendremos como comunidad. Queremos un censo completo y veraz para nuestra nación”, concluyó Manuel Landivar.

The best way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month is for all Latinos living in Miami-Dade to make sure they fill out the Census. An accurate count will facilitate the allocation of federal funds to the community. eptember 30 is the deadline to fill out the 2020 census. In parallel, mid-September marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month celebration when the country’s Hispanic achievements and contributions are evoked.

The Census overlaps as an opportunity for Latinos to ensure that our voice continues to be heard.

However, these are challenging times for the community to participate mostly due to the Covid-19 emergency that has been significantly affecting South Florida. Still, the Census Bureau has been working to continue with the census operation and has adjusted its protocols and schedule to count the population accurately.

The numbers speak for us: Miami-Dade is behind in its census response which could lead to a lack of federal funding and grants that are allocated to each community.

Miami-Dade ranks 31st out of 67 counties in the state. Whereas the national average of people filling out the Census is 63 percent, only 58 percent of Miami-Dade residents have responded as of mid-August.

“We understand that Covid-19 has strongly impacted South Florida. However, we made sure to carry out this Census in the best possible way,” said Manuel Landivar, Assistant Regional Census Manager. “We have staff working, following up on people who have not responded, and observing health protocols to know which areas are more accessible than others and dispatch our staff to the field.”

Census takers began visiting homes in South Miami-Dade on August 11, and the Census Bureau has been continually training staff. They estimate that both North Miami and South Miami—the offices bet-

ween which the Miami-Dade Census is divided—will have 1,000 to 1,200 census takers visiting homes until September 30.

According to Manuel Landivar, the main priority is that people fill out the Census either online, by phone, or mail. “We invite people to answer mainly through these channels, as the deadline is also September 30. This way we avoid census takers knocking on doors, which helps us reduce cost and will take people less time.”

However, if a census taker knocks on your door, be assured that all security protocols

have been implemented to protect the staff and residents. “Census takers knocking on doors are trained to maintain physical distance outside the residence. They do not enter the house. It is a short interview of less than ten minutes,” said Manuel.

September is very critical to ensure the support of the Miami-Dade Hispanic community to complete the Census. “If we all fill out the Census, the more benefits we will get as a community. We want a complete and truthful census for our nation,” concluded Manuel Landivar.

La decisión de la escolaridad de nuestros hijos dependerá de la situación y necesidades de nuestra familia. ¡Dejemos la culpa a un lado!

uchos padres se enfrentan con escoger entre la opción virtual o presencial para la escolaridad de sus hijos. Lo importante es brindarles mucho apoyo, seguridad y paciencia en estos momentos a nuestros hijos.

Evaluemos y observemos como se están sintiendo y restructuremos la rutina y opción de escolaridad que le beneficie no solo a los niños sino a nosotros como familia también. Este mes tómennoslo como de prueba y con mucha flexibilidad. Empieza a preguntarte que alternativas tienes. Seguramente en estos momentos ya decidiste o estas por decidir si irte por el camino virtual o presencial. Aquí encontraras algunos consejos para cada escenario.

Opción Virtual Si tu hijo estará en clases virtuales te aconsejamos que en principio lo ayudes a

crear un espacio propio en la casa donde se sienta motivado, ármenlo juntos y hazlos parte de ese proceso. Al igual que armarían su cuarto que organicen su espacio de trabajo. Por otro lado, te aconsejamos que balancees la rutina virtual con oportunidades para socializar. Puedes buscar grupos de soporte o mejor conocidos como “virtual pods” para que hagan el sistema online junto a otros niños y así compartir ideas, experiencias e interactuar. También puedes organizar “playgroups” donde un grupo de padres se ponen de acuerdo y rotan sus casas para que luego de cumplir sus clases virtuales los niños puedan jugar y socializar.

La gran pérdida de la opción virtual es la falta de interacción social con los demás. Y en esa interacción hay lecciones invaluables que debemos recuperar. Por último, trata de buscar actividades donde tu hijo pueda ejer-

citarse al aire libre y mide el uso de la tecnología reemplazándolo con maneras en que ejercite su mente y fomentes su creatividad utilizando juegos como rompecabezas, juegos de mesa, actividades de arte, colorear y dibujar o simplemente dejarlo jugar libremente con sus juguetes.

Opción Presencial No te sientas culpable si necesitas que tus hijos vayan al colegio presencial, ya que la situación de cada familia y las necesidades de cada niño son diferente. Los niños son resilientes, se adaptan y pueden adaptarse a las instrucciones y lineamientos que reciben en los colegios como uso de máscaras y distanciamiento social de 6 pies. Si tomaste esta opción te recomendamos que siempre tengas un plan b en caso de que se presente un cierre de colegio dado a un caso de covid. Tener tu plan b asegurara que tu rutina como padre no se vea tan afectada. Puedes tener un “playgroup” junto a otros padres o a lo mejor algún familiar o tutora que pueda ayudarte a cuidar a los niños en dado caso que no puedan ir al colegio por algún tiempo.

No importa cuál es el escenario, sea virtual o presencial, recordemos algo muy importante, debemos mostrarles seguridad y apoyo a nuestros hijos. Si debemos cambiar algo, ellos lo aceptaran y entenderán, siempre y cuando su hogar y su familia sea un refugio y no un lugar que les genera más angustia. ¡Así que pensemos positivamente y planeamos con tiempo para estar preparados y brindarles ese apoyo a nuestros hijos!

Virtual School vs. School House Model Tips for Parents

Remember that the decision of virtual or schoolhouse model will depend on the circumstances and needs of every child and her or his family. Don’t feel guilty! any parents have been faced with choosing either a virtual school model or a schoolhouse model to begin this school year.

Whichever route you take, you must remember the importance of giving your children love, patience and support in this transition period. Pay close attention to how they are feeling and structure a school routine that not only works for your child but also works for you and your family. This first month take it easy! Be flexible! Begin to question what alternatives you have as a parent. You are probably about to decide or have already decided the route you will take. Here we will share some tips for each scenario.

Virtual Option If your children begin virtual classes, we recommend that you first set up a workspace for them at home. This space must help them feel motivated, so decorate it together and make them part of the process.

Just like you would decorate their room, build this workspace together! We also suggest you look for support groups, better known as “learning pods,” which are small groups of students that take their online classes together. This helps them share ideas and experiences while completing their virtual classwork.

The greatest loss of this virtual option is the lack of social interaction! However, you can organize playgroups in which a group of parents decide to rotate houses and host gatherings for children to play and socialize.

In this type of interaction, there are valuable lessons that we must recuperate; place a big focus on that. Lastly, try to find activities during which your child can exercise, preferable outdoors. Keep a conscious mind on

the use of technology at home but try to replace screen time with outdoor play or games that will foster your child’s creativity, such as coloring, painting, memory games or free play.

School House Model Don’t feel guilty if you need to enroll your children in a school physically, known as the schoolhouse model. Every family has its own situation and every child is unique. Remember children are resilient, and they will adapt to school safety rules such as the use of masks and social distancing. If you have already selected this path, we recommend you have a plan B, to ensure that your family routine isn’t disrupted because most likely the school will have a COVID case and will have to close. Having a plan B might include having a family member take care of your

kids or a tutor come to your house, you could also arrange for playgroups if school closes. Having a plan B will also make the changes less difficult for your children and give them a sense of routine in case their school closes.

Regardless of which scenario you are facing (virtual or schoolhouse model), remember the most important thing is to show your children security and give them support and love through this whole process. If you have a change in routine or are obligated to change their school form, they will adapt! Because children adapt to changes, but only if their home and family are their safety net and not a place that makes them anxious and stressed. So, think positive and be prepared to offer your children the support they need!

Coalición por la Educación Juvenil: Los Jóvenes Lideran Conversaci a historia de los inicios de la Coalición por la Educación Juvenil es una de sincronización impecable.

En 2019, activistas estudiantiles climáticos acudieron a la junta escolar de MDCPS y solicitaron ausencias justificadas para los estudiantes que asistían a las protestas contra el cambio climático. Los estudiantes activistas se encontraron con una abrumadora respuesta de indiferencia con respecto a su solicitud. he story of Youth Education Coalition’s inception is one of impeccable timing. In 2019, student climate activists went to the MDCPS School Board requesting excused absences for students attending climate-change protests. The student activists were met with overwhelming indifference regarding their request. In fact, the president of United Teachers of Dade felt compelled to apologize on behalf of the school board’s meager response to the youth.

At that moment, Dewayne Martin, a high school student, asked himself how he could ensure that the youth would be taken seriously during future similar petitions. Coincidentally, three of the nine school board seats were up for a change of seat during the August 18, 2020, elections. Having one-third of the school board seats open is extremely unprecedented considering the school board position has no term limits. Martin decided, “It was the perfect opportunity for young people to step up and ensure that the next time we ask for the school board’s support, we are not met with apathy, but with elected officials who actually have the best interest of their students, teachers, and communities in mind.”

As a result, Martin founded the Youth Education Coalition (YEC), a studentled organization that focuses on politics in education and is guided by its core values of awareness, action, and accountability. The Youth Education Coalition’s goals reflect the need for students to gain a seat at the table.

They aim to host youth-led candidate forums, for the youth advisor to the school board to become a voting member of the school board, to create youth advisory councils in each committee of the school board, to have a youth liaison for each school board member, and for all school board members to conduct monthly fireside chats. The YEC has already completed their first goal by hosting massively successful Youth School Board Forums for districts 3, 5, and 9. Their efforts combined with that of several community partners reached almost 3,000 individuals.

Connecting and activating young people in Miami-Dade County has been a crucial component of the YEC. Martin explained, “We have so many talented and exciting young people that rarely get the opportunity to work together.” The YEC serves as a space that connects these students and allows them to realize that the issues that they face are not unique to their schools, and they can address these issues by collaborating and contributing their unique skills. YEC hosts Workshop Wednesdays for team members to be assisted by guests in developing skills ranging from meditation to organizing. They also host Coalition Fridays which are weekly events solely for members to socialize. Martin affirmed, “above all, we are a coalition, which means we bring people and organizations together,” and this shows in the way YEC operates.
