omestead tendrá una experiencia cultural a medida que el grupo de Teatro Local, Ruta Treatral, viaje a la ciudad con cuatro producciones diversas y únicas con su Festival de Teatro.

Escritor, director y productor, Manuel Mendoza lidera la organización sin fines de lucro, con la esperanza de empujar a la comunidad al mundo del teatro en vivo. Trabajando en la industria por más de 20 años, su deseo es enriquecerse con la comunidad con la forma de arte.

"El teatro, siento que es una ventana para educarnos como sociedad y creo que es muy importante en estos días en los que estamos un poco desconectados y el mundo está un poco turbado,” dijo Mendoza.

Mendoza cree que es importante para el crecimiento de la comunidad, especialmente en Homestead ahora que el área está pasando por un mayor desarrollo.

"Hay una comunidad importante que está creciendo, que también necesita de nosotros, de nuestros trabajo," dijo.

Los títulos destacados incluyen "La Fiesta de la Friducha," una obra basada en la legendaria artista, Frida Carlo y su arte, dirigida por Lilian Vega.

“El día que cambia la vida del Señor Odio,” dirigido por Oswaldo Maccio, es una obra de teatro perfecta para la familia y trata sobre las emociones y actitudes de la sociedad.

Más tarde esa noche llega "Smiley," una obra que se centra en la experiencia del amor de una relación entre personas del mismo sexo mientras explora los parámetros físicos de la sociedad sobre la belleza y la imagen corporal, dirigido por Kevin Cass.

Finalmente, una obra especial escrita y dirigida por la actriz Cubana Zully Montero, "Celos." Una historia sobre los celos y los efectos negativos que tiene, involucrando a las personas en los parámetros de la paranoia.

Mendoza planea llevar la Ruta Teatral a áreas del sur de Florida como Weston, Hialeah, Cutler Bay y muchas más.

La producción tendrá lugar del 20 al 22 de Septiembre en el Seminole Theatre ubicado en Downtown Homestead. Los boletos oscilan entre $5 y $10 respectivamente.

El objetivo general de Mendoza es eventualmente llevar el teatro a todos de forma gratuita, para que puedan disfrutar del amor al arte tanto como él.

"Mi sueño es que los padres lleven a sus hijos, que los abuelos se lleven a sus nietos, y que de esta manera podamos ser un mejor país," dijo. "Y creo que la cultura, la conexión con el arte, con el teatro, y la música hace un mundo mejor."

Homestead’s Theater Festival Brings LATINO-BASED PLAYS TO THE SEMINOLE THEATER omestead is set to have a cultural experience as the local theater group Ruta Teatro rides into town with four diverse and unique productions with its Festival de Teatro.

Writer, director, and producer, Manuel Mendoza leads the non-profit organization, hoping to thrust the community into the world of live theater. Working in the industry for more than 20 years, his desire is to enrich the community with the art form.

“Theater, I feel, is like a window that can educate us as a society, and it’s really important in a time when we are so disconnected, and the world is so convulsed,” he said.

Mendoza believes it is important for the community’s growth, especially in Homestead now that the area is going through more development.

various performers from Central America and other Latin countries, yet all local to South Florida. For Mendoza, it is vital to feature artists from the area as he believes it will help revitalize interest in theater.

“There is an important community growing there, and it needs us and this kind of work of art,” he said.

Featured titles include La Fiesta de la Friducha, a play based on the legendary artist Frida Kahlo and her art and directed by Lilian Vega.

El Dia Que Cambio la Vida del Senor Odio, directed by Oswaldo Maccio, is a play perfect for the family and is about emotions and attitudes of society.

Later that night comes Smiley, which focuses on the experience of love of a same-sex relationship while exploring society’s physical parameters on beauty and body image; it is directed by Kevin Cass.

Finally, a special play written and directed

by Cuban actress Zully Montero, Celos, a story about jealousy and the negative effects it has, tricking individuals into the realms of paranoia.

Mendoza plans to take Ruta Teatro to areas in South Florida such as Weston, Hialeah, Cutler Bay and many more.

The production will take place from September 20 to the 22nd at the Seminole Theater located in downtown Homestead. Tickets will run from $5 to $10.

Mendoza’s overall goal is to eventually bring theater to the community for free, so all can enjoy the love of the craft as much as he does.

“My dream is that parents take their kids and grandparents take their grandkids and that we can be a better country this way,” he said. “And I think culture—the connections with art, theater and music—makes us a better world.”

Mary-Jo Hernández: HACIÉNDONOS CONSCIENTES DEL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO menudo, la ciencia es vista como otra asignatura para apresurarse en la escuela, pero para la Científica Ambiental local, MaryJo Hernandez, es vital entender el mundo y la clave para salvarlo. “¡Para mí, la ciencia tiene sentido!

No es una teoría, no es algo que puedas cuestionar, es un hecho y ha sido probado, y no hay duda de eso," dijo.

En la Planta de Energía Nuclear de Turkey Point, Hernandez, como Ingeniero de CCS para Florida Power & Light, es responsable de mantener en buen estado los Sistemas de Canal de Enfriamiento, construido para circular y enfriar las descargas de agua caliente. Y es que su papel es fundamental, ya que ayuda a mantener el funcionamiento de la planta de energía.

Ella le da crédito a su maestra de estudios ambientales, quien despertó su pasión por las ciencias ambientales como la fuerza impulsora que la empujó a seguir una carrera en el campo. "Ella simplemente me impulsó al querer asegurarme de que sabía de lo que estaba hablando y que podía transmitir la información, y que podía hacer algo con mi conocimiento para ayudar al medio ambiente", dijo.

Con un afán de aprender y tener éxito, continuó sus estudios y finalmente recibió su licenciatura en ciencias en estudios ambientales en Universidad Internacional de Florida (FIU) en menos de cuatro años. Rápidamente se fue a trabajar para lugares como Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center y el National Park Service, adquiriendo experiencia práctica.

car a la comunidad sobre el medio ambiente, cómo protegerlo, conservarlo y restaurarlo. Especialmente quiere usar sus habilidades bilingües para explicar por qué el trabajo que ella y su equipo están haciendo es importante.

"En la comunidad latina no es realmente algo de lo que se habla mucho, la ciencia ambiental y el medio ambiente, aparte de subirse a un bote y salir a la playa," dijo.

"Así que siempre me gusta comunicarme con ellos."

Está especialmente orgullosa de su papel como mujer en la comunidad científica, ya que cree que ha faltado representación en el campo y espera con su posición y plataforma que las mujeres, especialmente las latinas, sean consideradas iguales sin discriminación alguna.

Al igual que a cualquier otra persona, a Hernandez le gusta pasar tiempo con amigos, jugar videojuegos o juegos de mesa, sin embargo, en su esencia es una buscadora de aventuras y disfruta del kayak y de estar al aire libre, donde felizmente continúa apreciando la naturaleza.

Hernandez es un ejemplo a seguir cuando se trata de la importancia de la educación, la persistencia y el respeto de la representación y la dedicación a las aspiraciones de uno.

“Me siento realmente orgullosa de tener esta plataforma y mostrar cuán capaz, no solo soy yo, sino todos los demás pueden ser. Que puedes llegar hacer todas estas cosas," dijo.

Mary-Jo Hernandez: MAKING US AWARE OF CLIMATE CHANGE

cience is often viewed as another subject to hurtle through in school, but for local environmental scientist Mary-Jo Hernandez, understanding the world and the key to saving it is vital. “To me, science makes sense! It’s not a theory, it’s not something that you can question, it’s a fact and it’s been proven, and there’s no questioning it,” she said.

At the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, Hernandez is responsible for maintaining the health of the cooling canal system (CCS)—constructed to circulate and cool warm-water discharges—as a CCS engineer for Florida Power & Light. Her role is pivotal as it helps keep the power plant functioning.

She credits her AP environmental studies teacher who ignited her passion for environmental science as the driving force that pushed her to pursue a career in the field. “She fueled me into wanting to make sure that I knew what I was talking about and could relay the information, and could do something with my knowledge to help the environment,” she said.

With an eagerness to learn and succeed, she continued her studies and received her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from Florida International University in fewer than four years. She quickly went to work for places such as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center and the National Park Service, gaining hands-on experience.

As a first generation graduate and proud Latina, she wants to share her knowledge and educate the community about the environment, how to protect, conserve and restore it. She especially wants to use her bilingual skills to explain why the work she and her team are doing is important.

“In the Latin community, it’s not really something that is very talked about, environmental science and the environment, aside from getting on a boat and going out to the beach,” she said. “So I always like to communicate with them.”

She is especially proud of her role as a woman in the science community, believing the representation in the field has been lacking and hopes with her position and platform that women, especially Latinas, will be accepted as equals.

Like anyone else, Hernandez likes to spend time han-

ging out with friends, playing video or board games; however, at her core, she is an adventure-seeker and enjoys kayaking as well as being outdoors where she happily continues to appreciate nature.

Hernandez stands as an example when it comes to the importance of education, persistence, respect and dedication to one’s ambitions.

“I feel really proud to have this platform [and] show how capable not only I am but everybody else is. That you can rise to all these things; coming from a family in which my parents didn’t go to college, I was really proud to be that person for them and be able to go to college and succeed.”

El restaurante La Cruzada brinda tradiciones, cultura y sobre todo auténtica comida mexicana a la comunidad de Homestead.

ada año, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, los estadounidenses celebran el Mes de la Herencia Hispana y rinden homenaje a las historias, culturas y contribuciones de estadounidenses e inmigrantes cuyos antepasados llegaron a los Estados Unidos desde España, México, el Caribe, América Central y América del Sur. La celebración comenzó en 1968 como la Semana de la Herencia Hispana y luego en 1988 se expandió para cubrir un período de 30 días.

Comienza a mediados de mes, en oposición al final, porque el día 15 marca los días de independencia de cinco países latinoamericanos: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. México, Chile y Belice siguen poco después, los días 16, 18 y 21.

El Mes de la Herencia Hispana honra a las generaciones de hispanoamericanos que han influido positivamente y enriquecido la sociedad estadounidense. En particular, celebra el arte y la cultura y, por supuesto, la gastronomía hispana.

Los alimentos hispanos tradicionales se han introducido en la dieta estadounidense durante años y ahora es común que los estadounidenses incluyan nachos, enchiladas, chorizo o queso fresco en sus comidas diarias.

La mayoría de la cocina hispana se ha mezclado con la cultura estadounidense dominante creando muchas variaciones de platos de inspiración hispana como el conocido Tex-Mex: una fusión de la cocina mexicana y estadounidense, principalmente como resultado de la cultura tejana. La diferencia más notable entre Tex-Mex y la cocina mexicana original radica en los métodos de cocción y los ingredientes utilizados.

Sobre este asunto, en Homestead el restaurante La Cruzada ofrece lo que se conoce como auténtica y tradicional cocina mexicana. La Cruzada ha prosperado en nuestra comunidad gracias a sus platillos originales, brindando una experiencia única para quienes quieren probar la verdadera comida mexicana. El restaurante abrió hace 13 años, gracias a que su dueña, Alba R. Loera, quiso marcar la diferencia, “pues

Aunque La Cruzada ofrece un extenso menú de comida típica mexicana, los platillos destacados son el Pozole, el Menudo, la Birria de Chivo, los Huaraches, Sopes, Gorditas, y una extensa selección de Tortas, Enchiladas y Tacos, con el sabor único de la casa.

La Cruzada ha tenido gran reconocimiento ya que aparece con los mejores comentarios en sitios como TripAdvisor y ha sido catalogado como el mejor restaurante mexicano del área de Miami por USA TODAY. Su éxito, dice Alba, radica en tres factores: la autenticidad, el servicio y la limpieza.

Latinos have always been looking for ways to connect to their roots, and food has always been the best way to gather the community together under the same heritage. La Cruzada restaurant brings in traditions, culture and—above all—authentic Mexican food to Homestead. ach year from September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and pay tribute to the histories, cultures and contribution of Americans and immigrants whose ancestors came to the United States from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.

The celebration started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and then in 1988 was expanded to cover a 30-day period. It begins in the middle of the month, as opposed to the end, because the 15th marks the independence

days of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize follow shortly after, on the 16th, 18th and 21st respectively.

Hispanic Heritage Month honors the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched American society. It particularly celebrates arts and culture, and of course, Hispanic gastronomy.

With Hispanics making up more than a quarter of the U.S. population today—and gro-

wing fast—experts say this change is dramatically flavoring the American culinary experience. Traditional Hispanic foods have been making their way into American diets for years, and it is now common for Americans to include nachos, enchiladas, chorizos or queso fresco in their day-to-day meals.

Most Hispanic cuisine has blended into mainstream American culture creating many variations of Hispanic-inspired dishes as the well-known Tex-Mex: a fusion of Mexican and American cuisine primarily as a result of Tejano culture. The most notable difference between Tex-Mex and original Mexican cuisine lies in cooking methods and ingredients used.

On this matter, Homestead’s restaurant La Cruzada offers what is known as authentic and traditional Mexican cuisine. La Cruzada has thrived in our community thanks to its original dishes, providing a unique experience for those who want to try true Mexican food. The restaurant opened 13 years ago as owner Alba Rosi wanted to make a difference, because “the other restaurants in the area were TexMex food only,” she says.

“We are 100% authentic. Our Chefs are Mexicans who learned culinary art in Mexico before emigrating to the United States, and also the servers, all Mexican women, wear traditional Mexican clothing. In addition, our dishes are cooked with original and handmade ingredients, never processed or packaged. They are fresh and ready to serve and come out hot from the kitchen soon after the diner orders,” says Alba.

Although La Cruzada offers an extensive menu of typical Mexican food, the main dishes are posole, menudo, birria de chivo (spicy goat stew), huaraches (not the sandals, but oblongshaped dough stuffed with meat and vegetables), soups, gorditas, and an extensive selection of tortes, enchiladas and tacos, with a unique flavor from home.

La Cruzada tops rankings and 5-star comments on sites like TripAdvisor. Additionally, it has been listed as the best Mexican restaurant in the Miami area by USA TODAY. Its success, says Alba Rosi, lies in three factors: authenticity, service and cleanliness.

Tres signos de la piel l sol de verano atrae a muchas personas a pasar mas tiempo al aire libre.

Tomar un poco de sol en un día cálido de verano puede ser una excelente manera de relajarse y obtener un poco de color. Aprender a reconocer tres de los tipos más comunes de daño solar puede obligar a las personas a visitar a sus médicos y tomar medidas que pueden salvar vidas para prevenir daños futuros.

No siempre es fácil reconocer signos de daño solar al pasar tiempo al aire libre en verano, especialmente para las personas que se exponen al sol con la esperanza de broncearse. Tal daño puede pasarse por alto o ser más evidente en el otoño, cuando las personas comienzan a pasar más tiempo en el interior.

Y es que la piel dañada por el sol no debe tomarse a la ligera. De hecho, el Skin Cancer Foundation señala que la gran mayoría de los melanomas, la forma más peligrosa de cáncer de piel, son causados por el sol. El SCF incluso señala que un estudio de investigadores en el Reino Unido encontró que el 86 por ciento de los melanomas se pueden atribuir a la exposición a la radiación ultravioleta o UV del sol.

La piel dañada por el sol no necesariamente provocará cáncer de piel. Sin embargo, la Academia Estadounidense de Dermatología (AAD por sus siglas en ingles) señala que el daño solar puede provocar cáncer de piel. Salir al aire libre sin la protección adecuada hace que la piel sea vulnerable al daño relacionado con

1. Arrugas Las arrugas no siempre son un subproducto del envejecimiento. Si bien la Clínica Mayo señala que la piel se vuelve menos elástica y más frágil a medida que envejece, lo que aumenta la probabilidad de que se desarrollen arrugas, las arrugas también pueden indicar piel dañada por el sol.

2. Manchas de edad Según la AAD, las manchas de la edad, que son manchas planas de color marrón, gris o negro en la piel, aparecen en las áreas del

cuerpo que con mayor frecuencia están expuestas al sol, incluidas la cara y las manos. La AAD señala que lo que parece un punto de edad podría ser cáncer de piel. Si se detectan tales manchas, los hombres y las mujeres deben consultar a un dermatólogo certificado por la junta para un examen de la piel.

3. Piel flácida La piel flácida es a veces un subproducto del envejecimiento, pero también puede ser indicativa de daño solar. Soaking up some rays on a warm summer day can be a great way to unwind and get a little color. Learning to recognize three of the more common types of sun damage may compel people visit their physicians and take potentially life-saving steps to prevent future damage.

It's not always easy to recognize signs of sun damage when spending time outdoors in the summer, especially for people who lay out in the sun hoping to get a tan. Such damage may be overlooked or more evident in the fall, when people begin spending more time indoors. But sun-damaged skin should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that the vast majority of melanomas, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are caused by the sun.

The SCF even notes that one study from researchers in the United Kingdom found that 86 percent of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to the ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun.

Sun-damaged skin will not necessarily lead to skin cancer. However, the American Academy of Dermatology notes that sun damage can lead to skin cancer.

1. Wrinkles Wrinkles aren't always a byproduct of aging. While the Mayo Clinic notes that skin becomes less elastic and more fragile as it ages, increasing the likelihood that wrinkles will develop, wrinkles also can indicate sun-damaged skin.

2. Age spots According to the AAD, age spots, which are flat brown, gray or black spots on the skin, appear on areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, including the face and hands. The AAD notes that what looks like an age spot could actually be skin cancer. If any such spots are detected, men and women should see a board-certified dermatologist for a through skin exam.

Various products claim to treat loose skin, but the AAD notes that facelift-like results likely won't come from any product sold in a jar. The FREE event will take place on Saturday, September 14, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Losner Park, located at 104 N. Krome Ave., Homestead, FL 33030. Don’t miss the highlight of the afternoon—the dancing horses of Club Hipico. See beautiful Andalusian and Friesian horses put on an exciting equestrian show.
