ompletar el censo es de vital importancia porque la financiación de más de 170 programas federales depende de los datos del censo. Estos programas federales brindan servicios importantes a nuestras comunidades locales.

Si tenemos un recuento insuficiente, las comunidades se verán afectadas directamente y perderán fondos durante toda una década.

El año pasado, Lubby Navarro, miembro de la junta escolar del condado de Miami-Dade, fue nombrada copresidente de la Comisión Nacional Latina en el Censo de 2020. El panel fue establecido por el Fondo Educativo NALEO, una organización sin fines de lucro, que aboga por la participación de los latinos en la vida cívica y política de los Estados Unidos. Ella también fue electa para servir como vicepresidenta del Equipo de Trabajo para el Censo 2020 En los últimos meses, la comisión celebró varias audiencias en todo el país, incluidos Los Ángeles (California), Nueva York (Nueva York), San Antonio (Texas), Columbus (OH) y Orlando (Florida) para escuchar el testimonio de las comunidades difíciles de contar. Sin embargo, Navarro destaca la importancia de la participación de todos en cada hogar de nuestra comunidad. "Aliento a todos los latinos a participar en el censo, independientemente de su estatus migratorio, ya que de acuerdo con la ley federal, esta información no se puede divulgar en 72 años a ningún funcionario gubernamental, agencia o al público".

Además, completar el censo es sumamente importante porque más de 170 programas federales dependen de los datos del censo. "El gobierno federal asigna fondos según el conteo del censo para programas como educación, vivienda, servicios sociales y transporte, entre otros", agregó.

Los resultados no solo determinarán la representación en el Congreso sino que también guiarán la distribución de más de $ 800 mil millones en fondos federales que se asignan directamente a las comunidades locales. “Asegurar un recuento preciso de nuestra población es mi principal prioridad. Se trata de nuestro futuro como una comunidad de rápido crecimiento que enfrenta muchos desafíos y tiene muchas necesidades ”, dijo Navarro.

Si hay un conteo insuficiente, las comunidades y los gobiernos locales sufrirán directamente las consecuencias de no tener los niveles adecuados de financiamiento federal durante toda una década. Por lo tanto, Navarro está alentando a los funcionarios del gobierno local a que comiencen a involucrar a sus electores formando comités de conteo completo del censo para crear conciencia sobre la importancia de todo lo que está en juego si cada persona no se cuenta en el Día del Censo, este 1 de Abril de 2020.

Make Yourself Count in Census 2020

“I urge all Latinos to make themselves counted in the 2020 Census,” said Miami-Dade County School Board Member Lubby Navarro. ast year, Miami-Dade County School Board member Lubby Navarro was appointed to serve as co-chair of the National Latino Commission on the 2020 Census. The panel was established by the non-profit NALEO Educational Fund, which advocates for Latino participation in American civic and political life. She was also elected to serve as the vice-chair of the Miami-Dade County Task Force on Census 2020.

Over the past few months, the commission held several hearings around the country, including in Los Angeles (CA), New York (NY), San Antonio (TX), Columbus (OH), and Orlando (Fl) to hear testimony from hard-tocount communities. As a result of these meetings, the commission is scheduled to release its report in Washington, D.C., on May 22nd.

According to Navarro, the commission has worked hard throughout the United States to receive testimony from hard-to-count communities that will be directly affected by the untested citizenship question that has been added to the 2020 Census. This question has not been part of any Census since 1950. “We are very hopeful that the Supreme Court will deliberate after hearing oral arguments and decide to remove the citizenship question from the 2020 Census,” said Navarro.

Many immigrants are fearful about completing the census now that the citizenship question has been added as they do not know how this information will be used. “Also, there is an innate fear of governmental institutions within our communities, as many people who call South Florida home are immigrants from Central

and South America and the Caribbean, where they faced oppression and the violation of their human rights at the hands of their governments,” Navarro said.

However, Navarro stresses the importance of full participation by everyone in every household in our community. “I encourage all Latinos to participate in the census, regardless of their immigration status, since according to federal law, this information cannot be disclosed in 72 years to any government official, agency, or the public.”

Additionally, completing the census is critically important because over 170 federal programs depend on census data. “The federal government allocates funding depending on the census count for programs such as education, housing, social services, and transportation, among others,” she added.

Results will not only determine representation in Congress but also guide the distribution of more than $800 billion in federal funding, which is directly allocated to local communities. “Ensuring an accurate count of our population is my top priority. It is about our future as a fast-growing community that faces many challenges and has many needs,” Navarro said.

If there is an undercount, communities and local governments will directly suffer the consequences of not having appropriate levels of federal funding for an entire decade. Therefore, Navarro is encouraging local government officials to begin now in engaging their constituents by forming census-complete-count committees to create awareness about the importance of all that is at stake if every single person is not counted on Census Day — April 1, 2020.

DÍA DE LAS MADRES

Nora Sandigo, "La Gran Madre" ora Sandigo es conocida popularmente como “La Gran Madre” ya que ha aceptado la tutela de más de 1.500 niños nacidos en Estados Unidos, pero hijos de inmigrantes indocumentados que han sido deportados o temen a la deportación.

Ellos han contactado a Nora por temor a que, si son deportados, sus hijos desaparecerían automáticamente en el sistema de hogares de adopción y no los volverían a ver.

Nora huyó de Nicaragua en los años 80 debido a la guerra civil que atravesaba su país. En su ciudad natal Sandigo estaba viendo cómo desaparecían sus compañeros de clase. Uno de ellos no se presentó a una reunión con el grupo rebelde Sandinistas y lo mataron, dice ella.

En medio de la violencia, su padre decidió enviar a sus hermanos a trabajar en una granja lejos de allí y les dijo que salieran del país. Ella fue a Managua y buscó asilo en la embajada de Venezuela. Allí empezó su camino, que la llevaría a Francia y luego a Miami como refugiada política en 1988, donde a través de su experiencia como inmigrante encontró su propósito de vida, el trabajar por los derechos de los inmigrantes.

Se vinculó entonces a una fundación apoyada por las Naciones Unidas que ayudaba a proteger los derechos de la comunidad de inmigrantes y desde donde lideró una demanda colectiva dirigida a lograr que los Estados Unidos otorgaran asilo a los nicaragüenses. En respuesta, el Congreso aprobó una ley que permitió la entrada de inmigrantes de varios países, incluida Nicaragua.

“Nos dimos a conocer como una fundación de puertas abiertas para la comunidad, con un trabajo gratuito, desde el corazón, una fundación de amor para ayudar a las familias”, dice Nora. Más adelante llegaron familias con niños y ellos les empezaron a ayudar con sus labores después de la escuela. Y eventualmente sucedió, “una madre peruana llamó desde un centro de detención

y me pidió que tomara la autoridad legal de sus dos hijos. Dije que sí y así comenzó todo”, cuenta Nora con orgullo.

Así nació la organización Nora Sandigo Children Foundation, “La organización vino a ser mi refugio desde que llegué al país. Dios me puso en el camino, y recibí todo el adiestramiento para poder trabajar durante 30 años por la comunidad inmigrante, hasta hoy en día”, comenta Nora.

A través de la organización, los padres que temen ser deportados firman documentos dándole poder a ella sobre sus hijos, los cuales no confieren tutela legal completa o derechos paternales sobre ellos.

Más bien, proporcionan un salvavidas a las familias, y le dan tiempo a Sandigo para garantizar la seguridad de los niños en caso de que uno o ambos padres sean detenidos por las autoridades de inmigración.

Con este poder Nora puede tomar decisiones por los niños en caso de que alguno de sus padres biológicos falte, en temas relacionados con su educa-

ción, su salud, cuando vayan a viajar o salir del país o cuando necesiten representación en la escuela, entre muchas más situaciones.

Sandigo ha estado tomando la tutela de niños desde el 2006. Ella no los cuida a todos a la vez. Muchos viven con un padre o amigo de la familia y la contactan cuando necesitan de su ayuda. Ella solo ha tenido un puñado de casos en los que ambos padres han sido deportados y los ha llevado a vivir con su familia, al lado de su esposo y sus dos hijas.

“Cinco niños han vivido conmigo y mi familia por más de 12 años, hasta que se han graduado de la escuela o han cumplido la mayoría de edad. Mi esposo y yo los consideramos nuestros hijos, y mis dos hijas los consideran sus hermanos”.

En la actualidad Sandigo y la fundación están recaudando fondos para comprar tierras para construir un centro. Ella dice que albergaría alrededor de 100 niños necesitados, aquellos que quedaron huérfanos y que a menudo sufren las consecuencias psicológicas de una familia separada.

ora Sandigo is known as “The Great Mother” because she has personally accepted guardianship of more than 1,500 children born in the United States, but whose parents are undocumented immigrants who have been deported or fear of deportation. Fearing that if they get deported, their children would automatically disappear into the foster-care system, and they would not see them again, they have contacted Nora.

Nora fled her war-torn Nicaraguan home in the 1980s due to civil war. In her hometown, Sandigo was watching her classmates disappear. “One of them did not show up for a meeting with the Sandinista rebel group, and they killed him,” she says.

In the midst of violence, her father decided to send her brothers to work on a farm far away and told her to leave the country. She went to Managua and sought asylum at the Venezuelan embassy.

There she began her journey, which would take her to France and then to Miami as a political refugee in 1988, where, through her experience as an immigrant, she found her life purpose: working for immigrants’ rights.

She then started working for a United Nations organization that helped protect the rights of the immigrant community, and from the U.N., she led a class-action lawsuit aimed at getting the United States to grant asylum to Nicaraguans. In response, Congress passed a law that allowed entry to immigrants from several countries, including Nicaragua.

“We made ourselves known as a foundation of open doors within the community, providing cost-free assistance always from the heart; a foundation of love made to help families,” says Nora.

Later, families with children arrived, and they began to help with the children’s homework after school. And, eventually, a special thing happened: “A Peruvian mother called from a detention center and asked me to take legal authority of her two children. I said yes, and that’s how it all started,” says Nora proudly.

This is how the Nora Sandigo Children Foundation was born: “The organization became my home from the moment I arrived in this country. God put me on the road, and I received all the training to be able to work for 30 years for the immigrant community until this day,” says Nora.

Through the organization, parents fearing deportation signed over to Nora power of attorney documents which do not confer complete legal guardianship or parental rights over them. Instead, they provide a lifeline for families and give Nora time to ensure the children’s safety in case one or both parents are detained by immigration authorities.

Through this document, if one of their biological parents is not present, Nora can make decisions for children on issues related to their education, their health, when they travel or leave the country or when they need representation at school, among other situations.

Sandigo has been taking guardianship of children since 2006.

She does not take care for all of them at once. Many live with a pa-

rent or family friend and get in touch with her when they need her help. She has had only a handful of cases in which both parents have been deported and has taken their children to live with her family with her husband and their two daughters.

“Five children have lived with my family and me for more than 12 years until they have graduated from school or have reached adulthood. My husband and I consider them our children, and my two daughters consider them their siblings.”

Currently, Sandigo and the foundation are raising funds to buy land to build a center. She says it would house around 100 children in need, those who are orphaned and often suffer the psychological effects of a separated family.

Located in Hialeah, the Miami Watersports Complex (MWC) is the latest in watersports park design!

he Miami Watersport Complex, inside Miami-Dade Parks’ Amelia Earhart Park, has become the best spot in Miami to learn and enjoy watersports like wakeboarding, wakeskating, wake-surfing, knee-boarding, and waterskiing.

“This high-end location draws all kinds of public fun seekers to practice watersports, from wakeboarding enthusiasts to professional competitors who commonly engage in world-renowned competitions,” said Amelia Earhart Park Manager Robert Carmona.

The facility is set up with two full-size cable systems, each with an impressive array of cutting-edge unit features. They are situated on the park’s 90-acre freshwater lake, and each is equipped with two full-size cables and two tower cables, ideal for learning and practicing new tricks.

Motivated and friendly champion coaches provide lessons for beginners and more advanced riders in different watersport disciplines.

Beginners can enjoy the comfort of riding alongside trainers while receiving instructions, and more advanced riders can be coached to progress and improve their riding skills and techniques.

Currently, MWC offers different lessons for all skill levels. Standard Lessons are family-friendly, geared for beginners and intermediate riders, while the advanced lessons are designed for riders who are ready to step up their riding to the next level.

We haven’t mentioned the GetUp Guarantee program, which includes a 15-minute, one-on-one learning session with an MWC staff member on the private Rixen Lil’ Bro two-tower cable system. It also includes a four-hour cable pass, so that after your learning session is over, you can continue riding on the other two cable systems. So, if you don’t get up on the wakeboard by the end of the day, you’ll get a second day free.

Additionally, the park offers wakeboarding lessons for all ages and abilities behind the award-winning Super Air Nautique G23 wakeboard boat, the official towboat of the U.S.A. Wakesurf National Championships. “The MWC towboat will make sure your riding experience is the best you can get,” remarked Mr. Carmona.

Outdoor sports enthusiasts can also experience other activities at Amelia Earhart Park. “Visitors can enjoy a mountain-bike trail with bikes available for rent and a bike wash station; or a Soccer 5 minisoccer complex. l gobierno federal declaró el uso de cigarrillos electrónicos o vaporizadores por jóvenes una epidemia en todo el país. In light of these concerns and the misinformation surrounding this topic, the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida is helping educate parents, educators, pediatricians and partners on what they need to know about vaping and youth.

The most popular e-cigarette brand is JUUL, a device shaped like a USB drive that is available in a variety of flavors and easy to conceal. In fact, youth are using JUUL devices inside school bathrooms and classrooms.

Here are the facts: • Youth vaping has increased dramatically across the country and in Florida. In 2018, about 25% of Florida high school students reported current use of electronic vaping – a 58% increase compared to 2017.

• Youth are vaping at much higher rates compared to adults. One in four Florida

• E-cigarettes, including JUUL, typically contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Youth may be more sensitive to nicotine and feel dependent on nicotine sooner compared to adults. According to the manufacturer, a single JUUL pod (the “liquid” refill) con-

tains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. JUUL uses nicotine salts, which can allow high levels of nicotine to be inhaled more easily and with less irritation.

• The brain continues to develop until the early to mid-20s and the developing brain is more vulnerable to the negative effects of nicotine. The effects include reduced impulse control, deficits in attention and cognition, and mood disorders. Using nicotine in adolescence may also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs.

• Evidence suggests that youth who use e-cigarettes may be at greater risk of starting to smoke regular cigarettes.
