Una adolescente cubanoamericana fundó el School Bell Blog, una "hoja de ruta" para estudiantes de bajos ingresos, de primera generación e inmigrantes en Miami-Dade que desean asistir a la universidad. l School Bell Blog proporciona recursos inspiradores e información educativa para ayudar a los estudiantes inmigrantes y de bajos ingresos del condado a mejorar las habilidades que necesitan para alcanzar sus aspiraciones profesionales. hermano Rafael vino de Cuba a la edad de 10 años y luchó desde el primer día con el sistema educativo estadounidense. No tenía suficiente apoyo o incluso información sobre cómo enfrentar los desafíos de la preparación universitaria", dijo.

Resulta que nadie le había dicho qué era el SAT, cuándo debería tomarlo o cómo prepararse. En el momento en que lo tomó, era la última fecha de la prueba antes de aplicar a las universidades y la ayuda financiera. Su puntaje se vio afectado, y esto terminó impactando la trayectoria de su educación. "Debido a su experiencia, él abogó por mi educación desde que era pequeña".

Cuando Rashel comenzó el programa preuniversitario, se dio cuenta de que los sitios de preparación universitaria suponían que los estudiantes conocían los procesos y los pasos necesarios para ir a la universidad. "Sin embargo, descubrí que los estudiantes inmigrantes de bajos ingresos tenían dificultades para acceder a recursos valiosos y tenían muchos vacíos. Estos vacíos son los que me propongo llenar con mi blog", explica.

También se dio cuenta de que no solo los estudiantes sino sus familias necesitaban orientación sobre este proceso de enviar a sus hijos a la universidad, descubriendo que muchos de esos padres ni siquiera hablaban el idioma. En respuesta, Rashel decidió escribir contenido en inglés y español, lo que de hecho fortaleció su enfoque de colaboración directa y conversación continua con sus compañeros y sus padres.

Su esfuerzo por apoyar y defender a la comunidad ya está dando sus frutos. El año pasado fue seleccionada para asistir al programa Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Summer Institute celebrado en la Universidad de Princeton. El proyecto también fue nominado por el Miami Herald Silver Knight Award en la categoría de Beca General.

Rachel acaba de recibir una beca para asistir a Yale este otoño. Estudiará Historia de la Ciencia, Medicina y Salud Pública. En cuanto al blog, continuará trabajando duro para enriquecer la vida de muchos estudiantes inmigrantes, ya no a nivel local sino a nivel nacional.

a Students’ Resource for College Preparation

A Cuban-American teen founded the School Bell Blog, a “road map” for low-income, first-generation and immigrant students in Miami-Dade County who wish to attend college. he School Bell Blog provides inspirational resources and educational information to help local low-income immigrant students improve the skills they need in order to achieve their professional aspirations.

The blog, founded by Rashel Chipi, is a bilingual website that covers a diverse range of subjects, such as preparation for tests like SAT, essential vocabulary lists used commonly in the education system, financial aid resources, academic advising for students, and even training in soft skills like daily planning and time management.

18-year-old Rashel Chipi founded The School Bell Blog in 2019. She was inspired by the lack of information immigrant students and their parents regularly have, not only concerning college but around the complex American education system.

Rashel is a Cuban-American, currently a senior at Coral Reef Senior High School, who faced this dilemma through her family story.

“My brother Rafael came from Cuba at the age of 10 and struggled from day one with the American educational system. He didn’t have enough support or even information on how to deal with college-prep challenges,” she said.

It turns out, no one had told him what the SAT was, when he should take it, or how to prepare. By the time he did take it, it was the last test date before applying to colleges and financial aid. His score was impacted, and this ended up affecting the trajectory of his education. She gave her brother credit: “Due to his experience, he has advocated for my education since I was little.”

When Rashel started the pre-college program, she realized that college preparation sites assumed students knew the processes and steps needed to go to college. “However, I found that low-income immigrant students had a hard time accessing valuable resources and had many gaps. These are the gaps I intend to fill in with my blog,” she explained.

Finding out that many of those parents

didn’t even speak the language, she realized that not only students but also their families needed guidance in this process of sending their kids to college. In response, Rashel decided to write content in English and Spanish, which in fact strengthened her approach to direct collaboration and ongoing conversation with her peers and their parents.

Her effort to support and advocate for the community is already paying off. Last year she was selected to attend the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Summer Institute held at Princeton University. The project was also nominated for the Miami Herald Silver Knight Award in the General Scholarship category.

Rachel has just received a scholarship to attend Yale this fall. She will be majoring in History of Science, Medicine and Public Health. As for the blog, she will continue working hard to enrich many immigrant students’ lives not just at a local level but nationwide.

Para muchos propietarios con hipotecas que han sido afectados financieramente por la pandemia del coronavirus, existe ayuda. Sin embargo, primero evalúe su situación. n estos tiempos de emergencia de Covid-19, es posible que tenga dificultades para realizar los pagos de la hipoteca a tiempo, y el Aplazamiento de pago puede ser una opción para ayudar a los consumidores a recuperarse, sin embargo, hay algunas cosas que debe saber y algunas decisiones importantes que debe tomar.

El Aplazamiento es cuando su administrador hipotecario, o prestamista, le permite pausar o reducir sus pagos por un período limitado de tiempo mientras recupera la estabilidad financiera. Además, dice Ledesma, usted puede optar por un refinanciamiento de retiro en efectivo, lo que significa pedir dinero prestado contra el valor neto de su vivienda para obtener fondos para cualquier propósito, ya sea para consolidar otras deudas o usar estos fondos en caso de emergencia. Al hacer esto, usted también está refinanciando y reduciendo su tasa hipotecaria.

Actualmente, muchos bancos no aceptan solicitudes de compradores o deudores con menos de un puntaje de crédito de 700, pero PRMG sí. Mortgage Relief Options during Covid-19

For many homeowners with mortgages that have been financially impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, there’s help. However, first assess your situation. n these times of Covid-19 emergency, you might be having difficulties making on-time mortgage payments, and forbearance might be an option to help consumers get back on their feet, but there are a few things you need to know and some important decisions you’ll need to make.

Forbearance is when your mortgage servicer, or lender, allows you to pause or reduce your payments for a limited period of time while you regain financial stability.

If your mortgage is backed by the federal government, the recently enacted CARES Act allows you to temporarily suspend payments for up to 12 months.

However, that does not mean what you owe gets erased. You will have to repay any missed or reduced payments in the future. According to William Ledesma, Senior Loan Officer at PRMG Mortgage Corporation, the problem with forbearance is that by the end of the delay period, you must repay all late payments. If your

Mortgage is $2000 per month and you don’t make payments for three months, the fourth month you’ll have to pay $8000.”

There are no clear rules about how borrowers must make delayed payments in the long term. If the lender or servicer demands that you pay back the deferred amount all at once or in an otherwise expedited manner, that could be impossible for the borrower.

To Ledesma, if you are not that financially impacted with the current situation and you’re able to keep making payments, there are other possibilities before requesting forbearance. “Mortgage refinancing is an option that could give you a lower mortgage rate. Since interest rates now are so low (3% to 3.5%), there is the possibility that you can save a lot of money on your monthly bill depending on how much you owe. For instance, a reduced interest rate could mean between $200 to $500 per month.”

Also, says Ledesma, you can opt for a cash-out refinance, which means borrowing money against your home equity to obtain funds for any purpose, either to consolidate other debts or to use these funds in case of an emergency. By doing this, you also are refinancing and lowering your mortgage rate.

Currently, many banks are not accepting applications for buyers or debtors with less than a credit score of 700, but PRMG is. “We want to help our community, and we are accepting clients with credit scores as low as 580. It is important to know that we have to verify employment status and income,” Ledesma added.

Beloved Principal Raúl Calzadilla, Jr.

Says Farewell

Highly admired and well loved by his students, parents and teachers, Principal Calzadilla will retire from Air Base K-8 Center on June 12. Here is his story. lthough he was born in New Jersey, he arrived in Miami at age 9.

At school, he received a great legacy from some American teachers who were eager to help Cuban children to integrate and adapt to the American culture without forgetting their roots.

At that moment, he found his path was education, and he would impact immigrant students with whom he shared strong ties.

Raúl Calzadilla, Jr. chose education as a career mainly because his parents insisted that education was not only the best way to get ahead but also to impact the world. His parents, Raúl and Carmen Calzadilla, emigrated from Cuba in 1955 and landed in Union City, New Jersey, perhaps anticipating what would come a few years later with the rise of communism and the exile of millions of Cubans.

Upon graduating from high school in 1976, Raúl enrolled at Miami-Dade College and completed his teaching degree at Florida International University (FIU) with a B.A. in Elementary Education, followed later by a Masters in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from FIU. Raúl served 34 years with the Miami-Dade County Public School System, and the last 15 years, as principal of Air Base K-8. He dedicated his life to education. Perhaps due to destiny or because his future was marked

to impact this educational center, the year he was born, 1958, the school was also founded. It was called Air Base Elementary School and was just outside the gates of the Homestead Air Force Base.

Raúl stood out in his 23 years of administrative and managerial work, both as assistant principal and principal. However, he recalls, “The most enjoyable part of my career was as a teacher. Almost every year I taught math and science in 5th grade. It was a rewarding experience because I dealt directly with the students and I was closely immersed in their process.”

Since his arrival at Air Base K-8, the school has had significant achievements. In 1996 the school was recognized as a National Magnet School of Merit, offering an international program with a focus on language immersion. “In the last 15 years, we expanded the school to a K-8 program, introduced the Cambridge Education System, and we went from having 600 students to more than 1,100, with 250 children in the gifted program,” says Raúl humbly.

In addition to being recognized by his colleagues as one of the best principals in the district, both for his charisma and love for education, his success was also acknowledged by the Miami-Dade School District.

“When I was at Leisure City, I was nominated for Assistant Principal of the Year and ranked among the six finalists,” he says. Besides, he was chosen in 2011 by the Supe-

rintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools to be part of the Principals Leadership Development Program, designed for those principals who stand out due to their leadership skills.

We are sure that on his last day of duty, his family—made up of his wife Miriam and three children—will be very proud of him for the services provided, the achievements obtained, and his unrelenting desire to help the community. He has been married to Miriam for 38 years, and in that period, he has been an active part of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where he currently serves as president of the management council.

When asked about the legacy he leaves after finishing his service at the school, he answers, “The school belongs to the community, that is why all the members (teachers, students, parents, and volunteers) understand that by being united, we build a powerful force. Children get to achieve their goals because there is a united voice behind them. We are a team, and everyone contributes to improving.”

“I know that my work has finished, and I’m leaving with a contented heart,” says Mr. Raúl Calzadilla, Jr. in a warm, nostalgic way.

June 12 will be his last day as principal of the Air Base K-8 Center for International Education. “I am leaving with immense gratitude to the staff, teachers and parents. Together we have built a strong team, always aiming for the benefit of our students.”

Altamente admirado y querido por sus estudiantes, padres y maestros, el Director Calzadilla se jubilará de Air Base K-8 Center el 12 de junio. Aquí está su historia. unque nació en New Jersey, llegó a Miami a los 9 años. Mientras estaba en la escuela recibió un gran legado de unos maestros americanos que ayudaban a los niños cubanos recién llegados a los estados unidos a integrarse y a asimilar la cultura americana, sin nunca olvidar sus orígenes. En ese momento se dio cuenta que lo suyo era la educación, y que así impactaría a aquellos estudiantes inmigrantes con quienes compartía fuertes lazos.

Raúl Calzadilla, Jr., le apostó a la educación porque sus padres le inculcaron que esta era la mejor forma no solo de salir adelante sino también de impactar el mundo.

Sus padres, Raúl y Carmen Calzadilla, emigraron de Cuba en 1955 y aterrizaron en Union City, New Jersey, previendo tal vez lo que pasaría unos años mas tarde con la llegada de la revolución y el exilio de millones de cubanos.

Al graduarse de la escuela secundaria en 1976, empezó sus estudios en el MiamiDade College y terminó la carrera de maestro en la Florida International University (FIU), con un B.A. en Elementary Education, que complementó en el transcurso de los años con un Masters en Elementary Education de Nova South Eastern University y un Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership de FIU. Raúl cumplió 34 años de servicio con el distrito escolar de Miami-Dade y los últimos 15 años como director de la Air Base K-8. Su vida la dedicó a la educación. Tal vez por coincidencias del destino, o porque su futuro

estaba marcado para impactar este centro educativo, en el año de su nacimiento, 1958, también se fundó la escuela que en ese entonces se llamaba Air Base Elementary School, situada a las afueras de la Base Aérea de Homestead.

Y es que Raúl se destacó en sus 23 años de labores administrativas y de dirección, tanto como Subdirector y Director. Sin embargo, recuerda, “la parte más agradable de mi carrera fue ser maestro. Casi todos los años enseñé en 5 grado las asignaturas de matemáticas y ciencias. Es una experiencia muy bonita porque tratas directamente con los alumnos y estás inmerso de manera cercana en su proceso”.

Desde su llegada a la Air Base K-8, la escuela ha tenido logros significativos. Desde 1996 fue reconocida como una escuela de mérito Magnet a nivel nacional, ofreciendo un programa internacional, con un enfoque en la inmersión de idiomas. “En los últimos 15 años expandimos la escuela a un programa K-8, introdujimos el sistema educativo Cambridge y pasamos de tener 600 alumnos a más de 1.100, con 250 niños en el programa de superdotados,” comenta con humildad Raúl.

Además del reconocimiento de sus colegas como uno de los mejores Directores del distrito, tanto por su carisma como por el amor a la educación, sus éxitos también han sido reconocidos por el Distrito Escolar de MiamiDade. “Cuando estuve en Leisure City fui nominado como Subdirector del año en el distrito y quedé entre los seis finalistas,” afirma. Además, fue escogido en el 2011 por

el Superintendente de Miami-Dade County Public School, para participar en el Principals Leadership Development Program, diseñado para aquellos directores que se destacan por sus labores de liderazgo.

Estamos seguros que en su último día de labores, su familia - compuesta por su esposa Miriam y sus tres hijos - estarán muy orgullosos de él por los servicios prestados, los logros obtenidos, y sus ganas inalcanzables de ayudar a la comunidad. Lleva 38 años de casado con Miriam, el mismo tiempo que lleva siendo parte activa de la iglesia St. Mark’s Lutheran, donde actualmente se desempeña como presidente de la consejería.

Cuando se le pregunta sobre el legado que deja tras terminar sus labores en la escuela, responde: “La escuela le pertenece a la comunidad, por eso todos los miembros (maestros, alumnos, padres, y voluntarios), entendimos que al estar unidos formamos una fuerza muy poderosa. Los niños logran sus objetivos porque hay una sola voz detrás de ellos. Somos un equipo y todos contribuyen a mejorar ".

“Se que mi labor se ha completado y me voy con el corazón satisfecho”, expresa de una manera nostálgica pero muy cálida el Sr. Raúl Calzadilla, Jr. El 12 de junio será su último día como Director de la escuela Air Base K-8 Center for International Education. “Me voy con tanto agradecimiento con los maestros y los padres. Juntos hemos construido un equipo muy fuerte, siempre con el objetivo de beneficiar a nuestros estudiantes”.

The survey also found that businesses within the personal service, hospitality and retail industries were most affected by the economic fallout of the outbreak.

Small businesses do not have the financial might of their larger competitors, making it especially difficult for such companies to weather economic storms.

As a result, when the economy suffers, many small businesses don't have the financial cushion necessary to safeguard their employees from layoffs or furloughs.

When social distancing guidelines were implemented, forcing non-essential businesses to close their facilities to customers, millions of small business employees were suddenly out of work.

Those men and women are friends and neighbors, so it's understandable that people want to find ways to help them make it through such difficult times. The following are some ways to do just that.

• Support local fundraising efforts. In response to the financial fallout of the COVID-19 outbreak, many small business owners urged community members to support their staff. For example, in New Jersey, where Gov. Phil Murphy ordered the closure of all restaurant dining rooms in mid-March, local restaurant owners organized The Great Jersey Shore Take-out, an effort in which the proceeds of all food

Certain medications can help people with potentially debilitating or even deadly conditions live normal lives, while others can help people overcome relatively minor issues like muscle aches or seasonal allergies.

The American Heart Association notes that mixing drugs can produce unexpected side effects. This can make it dangerous for people already on prescription medications to use over-the-counter drugs for issues like headache or seasonal allergies. Understanding the potential interactions between their prescriptions and common prescription and over-the-counter medications can help people stay safe.

• Antihistamines: Antihistamines are widely used to alleviate symptoms of the common cold or seasonal allergies, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The AHA notes that, when taken along with blood pressure medication, antihistamines can contribute to an accelerated heart rate and cause blood pressure to spike. The AHA also cautions people taking sedatives, tran-

quilizers or prescriptions to treat high blood pressure or depression to consult their physicians before taking antihistamines.

• Bronchodilators: Bronchodilators relax and open the airways in the lungs and are used to treat various lung conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. These drugs make it easier to breathe and are available via prescriptions. But patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and/or diabetes should discuss the potential interactions between bronchodilators and other medications they may be taking with their physicians.

• Cordarone: According to Drugs.com, Cordarone is used to treat potentially deadly abnormal heartbeats. Cordarone can cause severe problems that affect the lungs, thyroid or liver, and can be dangerous when combined with other drugs.

For example, the AHA notes that patients who take more than 20 milligrams of Zocor, a drug used to lower "bad" cholesterol and potentially to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other conditions, while also taking Cordarone are at risk of developing

rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to kidney failure or death. The AHA also says that Cordarone can inhibit or reduce the effects of the blood thinner Coumadin.

• Nicotine replacement products: People taking prescriptions for depression or asthma should consult their physicians before taking any nicotine replacement products.

The Federal Drug Administration notes that doctors may want to change dosages of patients' current medications before recommending they take any nicotine replacement products.

The FDA also advises people to speak with their physicians before trying these products if they have diabetes, heart disease, asthma or stomach ulcers; have had a recent heart attack; have high blood pressure but do not take any medication for it; or have a history of irregular heartbeat.

Drug interactions can complicate treatment of various conditions. People currently on medication are urged to speak with their physicians before taking any new medicines, including over-the-counter drugs.
