Silvio Plata A ROLE MODEL FOR ALL

Silvio lost his sight at 18 months due to cancer affecting his retina. However, his condition has not prevented him from developing his talents and reaching for his dreams. he way we look at life will always influence the way we act. We must positively look at life, thanking God for the things we have, not looking at what we lack but at our treasures.” These motivating words come from Silvio Plata, a young man from Miami with an exemplary vision of life, which paradoxically contrasts with his lack of physical vision since he lost his sight at 18 months old.

Born in Nicaragua, Silvio was diagnosed with retinal cancer known as bilateral retinoblastoma that affected both eyes when he was six months old. In Nicaragua, this cancer was not treatable, so the family moved to the United States to save his life.

The first treatment was performed at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, where specialists recommended removal of both eyes to prevent cancer from spreading to the entire face and brain, which would have been fatal. His eyes were replaced by prostheses that he must use for the rest of his life, but due to his physical growth, the prostheses need to be replaced every six months until Silvio reaches 18.

Diverse organizations have supported Silvio and his family in this arduous but important process. Miami Lighthouse for the Blind has been crucial to teach Silvio how to be independent, and since he was 18 months old, he has been participating in their programs which are focused on blind and visually impaired children.

Likewise, when Silvio was two years old, he started on the early intervention program at Arc Project Thrive School in Kendall, aimed at children under five years of age with disabilities. The program provided Silvio with the necessary tools for his training—occupational and fine motor skills therapy—allowing him to develop higher sensitivity in his fingers, which has been fundamental for his learning.

Most importantly, his family highlights the support they have received from the community and appreciates the assistance given to Silvio’s health and for saving his life. “In 2005, when we arrived from Nicaragua, we did not have money to pay for treatment. The community, with sup-

port of television channels such as Local 10 and organizations such as Club de Leones de Venezuela, carried out campaigns to collect money and pay for Silvio’s treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital,” says his mother, Ileana Plata.

Despite these events, Silvio has never let his condition stand in his way and has dedicated himself to cultivating his treasures; that attitude at 15 years old make him stand out from other people. “In my life, I focus on the treasures I have which are music and the talent I have that allows me to learn many things,” says Silvio.

He has a unique talent for music that he has developed since he was two years old. He plays the piano, the ukulele, the drums, the xylophone, and sings. And he does all very well! He has been invited to sing the national anthem at the Miami Open Tennis Tournament and at the Miami Marlins games.

Thanks to a scholarship from Italo’s Way Foundation, Silvio has been able to develop his voice and piano technique at the Doral Conservatory School of the Arts. He has been getting lessons every week since he was five years old and puts his talent into practice every Sunday at the New Jerusalem Church, where he plays piano and percussion.

He never let his blindness hold him back. He is a straight- “A” sophomore at the G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School, and from seventh grade, he’s been part of the Cambridge Global Studies Academy classes alongside other students with no vision impairments. Being part of the Cambridge model allows him to take credits for college, where he plans to attend as a law student.

Due to the training provided by organizations such as Arc Project Thrive or Miami Lighthouse, Silvio developed an extraordinary ability to handle the Braille system, a tactile reading and writing methodology for blind people. In addition to using it daily at school, he has excelled in various regional competitions since he was seven years old and is one of the best in the state in his category.

This led him to compete for the first time at

the 2019 Braille Challenge National Finals in Los Angeles on June 21, where he represented Florida. The best students with the highest results from all over the United States and Canada came to the finals. Silvio, although he had outstanding participation, did not manage to win, but he was delighted to have been invited and for giving his best effort.

Silvio has become a role model not only for his qualities and talents but also for his way of looking at life at such a young age. When asked what the key is to overcoming adversity, Silvio replied, “We should always be positive and grateful, but above all have faith in Jesus Christ, who will give us the strength to get ahead and overcome any obstacle that comes our way.”

Silvio quedó ciego a los 18 meses por un cáncer de retina. Sin embargo, su condición no le ha impedido desarrollar sus talentos y alcanzar sus sueños. a manera como miramos la vida siempre va a influir en la forma como actuamos. Debemos mirar la vida de una manera positiva, dándole gracias a Dios por las cosas que tenemos, no fijándonos en lo que nos falta sino en nuestros tesoros”. Estas motivadoras palabras las dice Silvio Plata, un jovencito de Miami con una ejemplar visión de la vida, que paradójicamente contrasta con su nula visión física, ya que es ciego desde los 18 meses de edad.

Silvio, quien nació en Nicaragua, fue diagnosticado con un cáncer en la retina conocido como Retinoblastoma Bilateral que le afectó ambos ojos desde los 6 meses de nacido. En Nicaragua este cáncer no era tratable, por ello la familia se trasladó a Estados Unidos para intentar salvarle la vida.

El primer tratamiento lo realizaron en el Bascom Palmer Eye Institute de Miami, donde los especialistas recomendaron la remoción de ambos ojos del niño para evitar que el cáncer se propagara a todo el rostro y al cerebro, lo cual hubiese sido inevitablemente mortal. Sus ojos fueron reemplazados por dos prótesis que debe usar por el resto de su vida, pero que debido a su crecimiento, deben cambiarlas cada 6 meses hasta que Silvio cumpla la mayoría de edad.

Diversas organizaciones han apoyado a Silvio y a su familia en este arduo pero significativo proceso. La organización Miami Lighthouse for the Blind ha sido crucial para enseñarle a Silvio a ser independiente y desde los 18 meses él ha sido parte de sus programas enfocados a niños ciegos y con limitación visual.

Así mismo, a los dos años de edad Silvio inició en el programa de intervención temprana de la escuela Arc Project Thrive en Kendall dirigida a niños menores de 5 años con discapacidades.

Este programa le brindó a Silvio herramientas para su formación, como terapia ocupacional y terapia motora fina, permitiéndole desarrollar mayor sensibilidad en sus deditos lo que ha sido fundamental para su aprendizaje.

Pero más que todo su familia destaca la ayuda que han recibido de la comunidad y les agrade-

cen enormemente por apoyar la salud de Silvio y salvarle la vida. “En el 2005 cuando llegamos de Nicaragua no teníamos dinero para pagar el tratamiento. La comunidad, con la ayuda de los medios de Televisión como el canal local 10 y de organizaciones como el Club de Leones de Venezuela, adelantaron campañas para recolectar dinero y costear el tratamiento de Silvio en el Jackson Memorial Hospital”, relata su madre Ileana Plata.

A pesar de estos sucesos, Silvio nunca ha dejado que su condición se interponga en su camino y se ha dedicado a cultivar sus tesoros que a sus 15 años lo destacan de otros jóvenes. “En mi vida me enfoco en el tesoro que yo tengo que es la música y en el talento que tengo para aprender muchas cosas” comenta Silvio.

Tiene un talento especial para la música que desarrolló desde los 2 años. Toca el piano, el ukelele, la batería, el xilófono, y también canta. ¡Y lo hace muy bien! Ha sido el encargado de entonar el himno nacional en el Miami Open Tennis y en los juegos de los Miami Marlins.

Gracias a una beca de Italo’s Way Foundation, Silvio ha podido desarrollar su voz y su técnica de piano en el Doral Conservatory School of the Arts , donde recibe clases todas las semanas desde que tenía cinco años, y pone su talento en práctica todos los domingos en la iglesia Nueva Jerusalén, donde toca piano y percusión.

Silvio no ha creído en el limitante de ser ciego para destacarse en la vida. Es un estudiante de decimo grado sobresaliente de la escuela secundaria G. Holmes Braddock, y desde el séptimo grado empezó a tomar clases del programa Cambridge Global Studies Academy al lado de otros estudiantes regulares, sin problemas de visión. Ser parte del modelo Cambridge le permite tomar créditos para la universidad, a donde planea llegar como estudiante de leyes.

Debido a la enseñanza brindada por organizaciones como Arc Project Thrive o Miami lighthouse, Silvio desarrolló una habilidad especial en el manejo del sistema Braille, una metodología de escritura y lectura táctil para personas ciegas.

Además de usarlo diariamente en la escuela, se ha destacado en diversas competiciones regionales desde que tenía 7 años y es uno de los mejores del estado en su categoría.

Esto lo llevó a competir por primera vez en el 2019 Braille Challenge National Finals en Los Ángeles el pasado 21 de Junio, donde representó a la Florida. A las finales llegaron los mejores estudiantes con los más altos resultados de todo Estados Unidos y Canadá. Silvio, aunque tuvo una participación destacada no logró salir victorioso, pero si muy feliz por haber sido invitado y haber dado su mejor esfuerzo.

Silvio se ha convertido en un joven ejemplar, no solo por sus cualidades y talentos sino también por su manera de mirar la vida a tan corta edad. Cuando se le pregunta cuál es la clave para vencer las adversidades, Silvio contesta: “siempre debemos ser positivos y agradecidos, pero sobre todo tener fe en Jesucristo, quien nos dará fortaleza para salir adelante y superar cualquier obstáculo que se nos presente”.

l verano puede pasar volando. Debido a que el verano a veces parece llegar y terminarse en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, es importante que todos aprovechen al máximo esta relajante época del año.

Las vacaciones en el trabajo y en la escuela son excelentes maneras de crear recuerdos de verano, es por eso que te mencionamos algunas formas con las que puedes sacar aún más provecho de estos descansos.

• Desconéctate por unos días. Desconectarse verdaderamente de los dispositivos electrónicos durante un período de tiempo para darse un descanso mental. Deja de responder los correos electrónicos del trabajo, evite las redes sociales y desactive los recordatorios de cosas que no necesitan su atención mientras está de vacaciones o tomando un descanso.

• Reserva un viaje. No se trata del destino sino de la oportunidad de alejarse de la normas lo que puede ayudar a que una persona sienta que realmente ha tenido un descanso. Alejarse de su entorno, aunque sólo sea por un fin de semana. Los centros turísticos cercanos y los parques acuáticos son ideales para excursiones cortas con los niños.

• Tómate una semana de descanso solo para relajarte. A veces, una persona necesita recargarse después de irse de vacaciones, ya que planificar un viaje en sí puede requerir mucho trabajo. Permanecer o dedicar una semana más a descansar o ponerse al día con las tareas en la casa puede aliviar la presión, lo cual hará posible que vuelvas al trabajo o la escuela sintiéndose aún más recargado.

• Salir de la casa u oficina. ¿Qué hay de bueno en los cielos soleados y las altas temperaturas si no puedes disfrutarlos? Considera pasar tiempo al aire libre todos los días. Ve a dar un paseo, siéntate en el parque después del trabajo o sal a jugar la pelota con los niños en el patio. La luz del sol puede ser grande para la mente y el cuerpo. Vacations from work and school are great ways to make summer memories, and the following are some ways to get even more out of these relaxing breaks from the norm.

• Disconnect for a few days.

Truly disconnect from electronic devices for a period of time to give yourself a mental break.

Stop answering work emails, avoid social media and turn off reminders of things that do not need your attention while you are on vacation or taking a break.

• Book a trip. It's not the destination but the opportunity to step away from the norm that can help make a person feel like he or she has truly gotten a break. Get away from your surroundings, if only for a weekend. Nearby resorts and water parks are great for short jaunts with the kids.

• Take a week off just to relax.

Sometimes a person needs to recharge after going on vacation, as planning a trip and then the trip itself can require a lot of work.

Staycations or devoting another week to just lounging around or catching up on tasks around the house can ease pressure. Then it's possible to go back to work or school feeling even more recharged.

What's the good of sunny skies and hot temperatures if you do not get to enjoy them? Make it a point to spend time outdoors every day. Go for a midday walk, sit in the park after work lets out or throw the ball around with the kids in the backyard. Sunlight can be great for the mind and body.

Doctors with the Heliotherapy, Light, and Skin Research Center at Boston University Medical Center say sunlight triggers the release of serotonin and other hormones associated with a good mood.

Increased exposure to sunlight also can regulate circadian rhythms for better sleep. Sunlight can trigger the release of nitric oxide into blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure.

• Explore summer programs.

Adults and children can try new skills and explore different talents this summer. Sign up for a camp or a class that runs several weeks.

This will help stimulate the mind.

• Visit friends and family. Now that schedules have loosened up, take the opportunity to increase time spent with friends or family members, whether they live close by or far away. Make it a point to reconnect with someone who has been out of touch.

¿Cómo evitar el golpe de calor durante los

calurosos días de verano?

El verano es una época que invita a pasar tiempo al aire libre. El aire caliente y la luz solar pueden ser difíciles de resistir, incluso cuando las temperaturas suben a niveles potencialmente peligrosos. as quemaduras solares puede ser la primera cosa que se le ocurra cuando la gente piensa pasar demasiado tiempo tomando el sol en tiempo de verano. Si no se trata inmediatamente, el golpe de calor puede resultar fatal. ¿Existen personas que pueden tener más riesgo de sufrir un golpe de calor que otras?

Una persona puede experimentar un golpe de calor diferente a otro. Además, debido a que se desarrolla tan rápidamente, el golpe de calor puede ser difícil de identificar antes de que una persona se encuentre en grave peligro. Pero Johns Hopkins Medicne señala que algunos de los síntomas más comunes de los golpes de calor incluyen: • dolor de cabeza, • mareo, • desorientación, agitación o confusión, • lentitud o fatiga, • convulsión, • piel seca y caliente que está enrojecida pero no sudorosa, • alta temperatura corporal, pérdida de consciencia, • latido del corazón rápido, y • alucinaciones. ¿Se puede prevenir el golpe de calor?

La forma más sencilla de prevenir el golpe de calor es evitar pasar tiempo al aire libre

bajo el sol en los días calurosos. Si tiene que salir al aire libre, hágalo cuando las temperaturas sean suaves y el sol esté bajo, como por ejemplo temprano en la mañana o en la tarde.

Además de estos cuidados cuando pase tiempo bajo el sol, hay otras cosas que puede hacer lo siguiente para evitar el golpe de calor.

• Tome muchos líquidos, como agua y bebidas deportivas, las cuales pueden ayudar a su cuerpo a mantener su equilibrio de electrolitos cuando pasa tiempo al aire libre. Además, evite las bebidas con cafeína como el café, los refrescos y el té, así como también el alcohol.

• Use ropa ligera, con tejidos ajustados y holgada en colores claros.

Summer weather draws many people outside. Warm air and sunshine can be hard to resist, even when temperatures rise to potentially dangerous levels. unburn may be the first thing that comes to mind when people think of spending too much time soaking up summer sun. But while sunburn is a significant health problem that can increase a person's risk for skin cancer, it poses a less immediate threat than heat stroke, a well-known yet often misunderstood condition.

What is heat stroke?

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that heat stroke is a lifethreatening emergency and the most severe form of heat illness that results from long, extreme exposure to the sun. During this exposure, a person's built-in cooling system may fail to produce enough sweat to lower body his or her body temperature, putting his or her life at risk as a result. Heat stroke develops rapidly and requires immediate medical treatment. If not treated immediately, heat stroke can prove fatal.

Are some people more at risk for heat stroke than others?

The elderly, infants, people whose occupations require them to work outdoors, and the mentally ill are among the people with an especially high risk of heat stroke. Obesity and poor circulation also increase a person's risk of suffering heat stroke. Alcohol and certain types of medications also can make people more at risk for heat stroke.

What are the symptoms of heat stroke?

One person may experience heat stroke differently than another. In addition, because it develops so rapidly, heat stroke can be hard to identify before a person is in serious danger. But Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that some of the more common heat stroke symptoms include: • headache, • dizziness, • disorientation, agitation, or confusion, • sluggishness or fatigue, • seizure, • hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, • high body temperature, • loss of consciousness, • rapid heartbeat, and • hallucinations.

Can heat stroke be prevented?

The simplest way to prevent heat stroke is to avoid spending time outdoors in the sun on hot days. If you must go outdoors, do so when temperatures are mild and the sun is low, such as in the early morning or evening.

In addition to being wise about when you spend time in the sun, you can do the following to prevent heat stroke.

• Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and sports drinks that can help your body maintain its electrolyte balance, when spending time outdoors. In addition, avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, soda and tea as well as alcohol.

• Wear lightweight, tightly woven and loose-fitting clothing in light colors.

• Always wear a hat and sunglasses when going outdoors, and use an

umbrella on especially hot days.

• Take frequent drinks during outdoor activities and mist yourself with a spray bottle to reduce the likelihood of becoming overheated.

Heat stroke is a serious threat on hot summer days. Because heat stroke can escalate rapidly, people must be especially cautious and mindful of their bodies when spending time outdoors in the summer.

Honduras es un país privilegiado para el cultivo de café y hoy en día es el 5 productor de café en el mundo, esto debido a diversos factores que incluyen su clima tropical, la geografía montañosa y la altura de sus plantaciones de café, lo que lo hace ideal para el cultivo de café Arábica.

“Lo que marca la diferencia del café Ikal es que es un café fresco y amigable con el ambiente, pues lo secamos en invernaderos solares, en lotes pequeños, lo que hace que el sabor sea mucho mejor. Nuestros granos son recolectados

En el mundo hay dos grandes familias de café, el Robusta y el Arábica. A diferencia del café Robusta, que es considerado standard, el café Arábica crece en condiciones geográficas entre los 1,650 pies y 7,900 pies de altura sobre el nivel del mar, tiene una concentración de cafeína máxima del 1,7%, con un resultado aromático y mayor suavidad al paladar, además de ser una bebida más digestiva, lo que lo convierte en un café Premium.

Y es precisamente la frescura del café Ikal lo que lo destaca en el mercado de los Premium.

“La frescura se refleja en la intensidad, el aroma y en la cantidad de espuma que hace,” comenta

Erick Molina. Y agrega que “como resultado el consumidor obtiene café de mejor paladar. Para el no especialista en café su mayor diferencia con otros tipos es que va a sentir el café más rico.”

Ikal viene trabajando con sus propias fincas y la de otros agricultores para escoger los mejores granos de las plantaciones de la montaña de las zonas cafeteras del país, con quienes tiene una relación de comercio justo. La empresa, como parte de su política de responsabilidad social, se ha comprometido con la comunidad Lenca y demás agricultores a la compra los granos de café a precios razonables y justos para el productor.

En la actualidad Ikal está ingresando al mercado estadounidense con un café molido en bolsa, en una presentación de 12 onzas, y con capsulas de café. Los dos productos ya se pueden adquirir en Amazon y por el resto del año la empresa pretende extenderse a pequeñas tiendas a lo largo de la florida.

Ikal coffee - harvested and produced in the mountains of Honduras arrives in Florida. kal, which in the Mayan language means “spirit,” is a coffee originated in Honduras and harvested from the Celaque Mountain, the highest in the country, where not only high-quality coffee is produced but also where the Lenka indigenous community has its home. In fact, the Lenka are the leading artisanal coffee growers collecting Ikal’s beans, a product which is currently entering Florida’s market.

Honduras is a premier country for harvesting coffee, and nowadays it is the fifth largest coffee producer in the world, due to several factors that include its tropical climate, the mountainous geography and the height of its coffee plantations. It is an ideal place for harvesting Arabica coffee.

“What makes Ikal coffee special is its fresh flavor because it is dried by exposure to sun rays inside an ecological greenhouse. Our coffee beans are hand-picked and harvested on small farms by farmers who over generations have used an artisan process for production.

Once the product is in our factory, we take care of processing, toasting, grinding, packing and dispatching,” says Erick Molina, one of the founding partners.

In the world, there are two large coffee families, the Robusta and the Arabica. Unlike Robusta coffee, which is consi-

dered standard, Arabica coffee grows in atmospheric conditions between 500 and 2,400 meters above sea level, has a maximum caffeine concentration of 1.7%, with more savory aromas and gentleness, in addition to being a more digestible drink. Thus, Arabica is considered a premium coffee.

Moreover, it is precisely its freshness that makes Ikal coffee stand out in the premium market. “Its freshness is reflected in its flavor, aroma and the amount of foam it makes,” says Erick Molina.

He adds that “as a result, the consumer gets pure flavor to the palate. For the non-coffee specialist, Ikal feels richer in taste compared to other coffee types.”

Under fair trade guidelines, Ikal has been harvesting from its farms and with other collaborating coffee growers to obtain the best quality beans from the Celaque Mountain plantations. The company, as part of its social responsibility policy, has committed to the Lenka community and other farmers to buy their harvests at reasonable and fair prices.

Ikal is currently entering the US market with a 12-ounce bag of ground coffee or coffee beans. Both products are available at Amazon, and for the remainder off the year, the company will sell at independent stores throughout Florida.
