Latinos Magazine sobre diferentes temas que afectan a su administración, como el Covid-19 (del cual dio positivo y acaba de superar), el programa de vacunación que ya se está llevando a cabo en el condado y sus planes para la recuperación económica de muchos negocios que han sigo fuertemente golpeados por la pandemia.

Sabemos que dio positivo por Covid-19 y que también se recuperó satisfactoriamente. ¿Cuéntenos como fue esa experiencia?

Estuve en cuarentena por dos semanas, tuve un par de síntomas de resfriado e incluso todavía tengo un poquito de tos. Afortunadamente, solo fueron síntomas leves.

Con respecto al Covid-19, ¿Qué está pasando en este momento en Miami-Dade en cuanto a las medidas de prevención?

Estamos trabajando de manera coordinada con el gobierno federal, estatal y local para hablar con una sola voz, para que todos cumplamos con las recomendaciones que incluyen continuar con el uso de las mascarillas y mantener el distanciamiento social. Así mismo, contamos con un sistema de rastreo que nos permite saber quien ha tenido el virus, y poner en cuarentena a aquellos que han tenido contacto con infectados.

Ahora que la vacuna ya está disponible. ¿Cómo va a ser el proceso de vacunación en Miami-Dade?

Hospital, desde diciembre miles de personas han recibido la vacuna. Los primeros en recibir la vacuna fueron los trabajadores de primera línea y de lugares de asistencia médica de largo plazo. Todo está saliendo muy bien y tenemos mucha esperanza de seguir adelante. Aunque la vacunación va a tomar meses, podemos decir que estamos entrando en la última fase de la pandemia.

Cuando tengamos el 80% porciento de la población con la vacuna ya podremos decir que hemos ganado. ¿Cuéntenos ahora sobre los programas que desde su gobierno tiene planeado implementar en el corto plazo?

We interviewed Daniella Levine Cava, the newly elected mayor of Miami-Dade, who gave us an overview of what is to come with her administration.

planeamos lanzar dos programas importantes: Thrive305, que es un programa de innovación, y Recover305, enfocado en las empresas que están pasando dificultades después de la pandemia. Con estos programas queremos escuchar las prioridades de la gente y lo que necesitan del gobierno local. ¿De qué se trata este programa Recover305 y como su gobierno planea recuperar la economía especialmente de los pequeños negocios?

El programa Recover305 se centrará en las pequeñas empresas que atraviesan dificultades y, con la ayuda de los líderes de la industria, planeamos crear nuevos negocios que generen nuevos puestos de trabajo. Así mismo, programas como el Cares Act del gobierno federal están brindando asistencia financiera a pequeñas empresas y residentes del sur de Florida que se han visto gravemente afectados por la pandemia. Esperamos recibir más fondos federales para continuar con estos programas.

aniella Levine Cava spoke exclusively with Go! Latinos Magazine on different issues that affect her administration, such as Covid-19 (she tested positive and successfully recovered), the vaccination program already taking place in the county and her plans for the economic recovery of many businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic.

Below are some questions and answers.

Q: We know that you tested positive for Covid-19 and that you successfully recovered. Tell us how the experience was?

A: I was in quarantine for two weeks, I had cold symptoms, and I still have a cough. Luckily, I had only mild symptoms. I had a lack of energy but recovered satisfactorily well and was able to resume my duties. Thank God it wasn’t worse.

Q: Regarding Covid-19, what is happening right now in Miami-Dade in terms of prevention measures?

A: We are working in a coordinated manner with federal, state and local governments to speak with one voice so that we all comply with the recommendations, including using masks and maintaining social distancing. Likewise, we have a tracking system that allows us to know who has tested positive and quarantine those who have had contact with those infected.

Q: Now that the vaccine is available, how will the vaccination process occur in Miami-Dade?

A: With the leadership of Jackson Memorial Hospital, thousands of people have been vaccinated since December.

The first to get vaccinated were frontline and long-term care facility workers.

Everything is going well, and we are ho-

peful to move on. Although vaccination will take months, we can say that we are entering the pandemic’s last phase. When we have 80% percent of the population vaccinated, we will be able to say that we have won.

Q: Tell us now about the programs that your government has planned in the short term?

A: My priority is to have an open dialogue with the community so that there is more transparency, and we will know first-hand what’s happening in our government. In this way, responding to our community’s needs, we plan to launch two essential programs: Thrive305, an innovation program, and Recover305, for companies experiencing difficulties after the pandemic. We want to hear people’s priorities and what they need from the local government through these programs.

Q: What is this Recover305 program about, and how does your government plan to improve the economy, especially for small businesses?

A: The Recover305 program will focus on small businesses experiencing difficulties, and with the help of industry leaders, we plan to create new businesses that generate new jobs. Likewise, programs like the federal government’s Cares Act are providing financial assistance to small businesses and residents of South Florida that have been hit hard by the pandemic. We look forward to receiving more federal funds to continue these programs.

Finally, I want to emphasize that small businesses are the backbone of our economy. We must continue to support them and provide them with the necessary tools to get them back on their feet.

District 9 Commissioner Commits to Coronavirus Funding for Those Who Most Need It

Kionee McGhee is making sure assistance programs funds and CARES Act money goes out to vulnerable residents, farmers and small business owners.

B

y the end of December, with the CARES Act running, Miami-Dade County had to allocate $474 million of relief money to the business and residents who needed it. County commissioners oversaw this task, ensuring the money got to tenants, landlords and financially strapped residents.

Newly elected District 9 Commissioner Kionne Mcghee talked with Go! Latinos Magazine about the challenges the community and small businesses face right now, and the programs that are on his radar. “I’m making sure that our fair share of the money gets to the people of District 9, particularly to the most vulnerable, the farmers, and the small business owners,” he said with regards to the CARES funds.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is a federal economic relief package to protect the American people from the public health and economic impacts of COVID-19. The U.S. Treasury, through the CARES Act, has already made payments to the state, local, and tribal governments.

As part of the CARES Act, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners created programs to provide immediate relief to all businesses and individuals. Around half of the money allocated to the county, $244 million, had been spent by mid-December, according to a memo released by the county’s chief financial officer, in programs such as rental assistance, ongoing meal delivery effort for seniors, or the Hospitality Restaurant Grant program, to mention a few.

“People are hurting right now as we try to get

through the pandemic. I am planning to solve this by working hard to fight for our people and making sure that every dollar is accounted for and goes to help the people who need it most,” remarked commissioner Kionne Mcghee.

When asked about the policies expected to assist small businesses hit hard by the pandemic, he emphasized the multimillion-dollar Small Business Assistance Forgivable Loan Program, which was approved earlier this year by the board of commissioners, and that was also allocated through the CARES Act. “Definitely, programs like this helped with an immediate cash injection to small businesses, that in some cases were forgivable if the business could demonstrate COVID impact and hardship,” he mentioned.

These kinds of programs are helpful due to the history of successful partnership the county has with the federally chartered Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) that participate in the administration. “These specialize in micro and small business lending in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, and we certainly want to keep these kinds of wonderful opportunities going.”

Debt sustainability is also on his radar. In this sense, he is prepared to tackle threats and crises, maintain critical infrastructure, exercise prudence and austerity, tackle constituent priorities and grow jobs.

“I am always specifically planning and looking to lend support to small business owners.

Job generation by firm size showed that most jobs came from firms with fewer than 20 employees, and that’s our current focus,” he added.

Piberry Institute Where Students come First

020 has been a tough year for my students,” says Marion Carberry from Piberry Institute, the technical school she founded to help students prepare for the workforce—professions that make them valued and contributing to their communities. Ms. Carberry understands the importance of feeling productive, useful, and needed. As a single mother, she experienced setbacks that challenged her feelings of worth and her ability to provide the life envisioned for her children. Then a school like Piberry Institute welcomed her after community college had dismissed her.

That school, Audrey Cohen College, helped transform this Jamaican immigrant into the successful entrepreneur she has become. A girl who had mediocre performances in her formative academic years became a woman who holds three master’s degrees and her own school of higher education. She tells her students, “It’s not how brilliant you are that determines your successes. Many brilliant people die with their talents unused. It is how dedicated you are to your journey that matters. Anyone can succeed at anything, once given a fair shot at it and never wavering,” says Ms. Carberry.

Before founding Piberry Institute, Marion believed herself a dynamic New Yorker destined for fame and fortune. She carefully selected and navigated her educational pursuits; attending Audrey Cohen College (now Metropolitan College of New York) where she excelled through a constructive-action curriculum, learning how to organize ideas, plan a business, and to execute ideas. But success was far away. In fact, Marion had failed so many times—as a talk-show writer and

producer, marketing promoter, restaurateur, private investigator, and fundraiser.

Her spiritual strength led her to never give up.

Taking a chance on herself, she relocated to Florida and met Dr. Vorick Picou.

They began chatting and soon became a team and created Piberry Institute. When the first student enrolled, Carberry promised never to fail at another business venture. Five years passed before Carberry gave herself a paycheck because Marion ensured that her employees would never be owed a dollar for the work they performed.

But, Carberry’s major impetus for keeping Piberry Institute’s doors open during arduous times is the promise she makes to students: to make Piberry Institute a safe space for her students who depend on her and Dr. Picou for counseling, direction, advice, and help to reach their goals. Any student failing to make it, whether dropping out or failing to land a job, hurts. Carberry needs money to build a world class facility to create greater opportunities. “If only someone like MacKenzie Bezos Scott could read our story and help us,” Marion prayed aloud.

Piberry is special. Carberry’s vision is to collaborate with a nonprofit entity that may serve as a resource to her students that require more focused social services.

For PBI, Ms. Carberry is developing a career services model to get all students employed upon graduation. She envisions Piberry Institute as a place having the finest and most innovative nursing equipment and simulations and space to help ensure wellness for the students and their families. “My student population is 98 percent Black and Hispanic single

women. They need more support from counseling, financial planning, and professional advising than any other demographic. They need to learn how to break cycles of racism, sexism and xenophobia.

“Here at Piberry Institute, we do much with little. We will continue to provide opportunities for our students, and one day, we will attract the funds and resources to develop the human services, scholarships and career services model that will get all graduates employed upon graduation. Times like 2020 help to build our resolve that all we need is to write it on paper and we will execute as promised,” said Carberry. Being at this crossroads reminds her of the beginning.

In 2011, she resigned from a great job and took on another that offered her a $5,000 sign-on bonus. She did that to get the money to help start the school. With little money and no savings, Piberry Institute received licensure, leased, and renovated a small space with second-hand carpeting and furniture. Everyone thought she and Dr. Picou were audacious wanting to open a school. Nonetheless, she forged ahead with Dr. Picou who taught almost every Medical Assistant course from 2011 to 2017 while she kept her day jobs and learned as much as she could about the business of higher education. To help with navigating the higher education sector, Marion worked at seven to eight other schools in

the greater Miami area learning as much as she could about the school business, to safeguard Piberry Institute from crucial pitfalls and setbacks experienced due to lack of money, human capital, and owner experience. Carberry and Dr. Picou have persevered despite setbacks.

It hurts Ms. Carberry when negativity about for-profit schools comes from the media and legislators. “They haven’t a clue what a school like Piberry Institute does,” Marion says. “If only they could spend one week here at PBI, observing everything that we do, they would see this is no easy task, no money-making endeavor. This is real work for people whom we believe deserve the best. Many of these students have been spun around for years at other schools and community colleges. We are their last hope.” Marion added with a smile. “I work for each and every student, to make a difference in their lives, to show them that they matter, and to teach them to rise and always strive to do better.”

Piberry Institute has grown from its humble beginning when Carberry and Dr. Picou were the sole employees. In 2017, the staff grew to three and by late 2019, it grew to at least 24 employees in part-time and full-time positions. The school projected even greater growth for 2020, but COVID struck. However, Carberry has kept working. She and her staff have successfully brought the school through its reaffirmation for accreditation with the Council on Occupational Education through 2025.

Carberry believes in technical education. “It works! Individuals hoping for a career learn about the profession through us. They receive direct training in the profession and are prepared to start working in that field on day one of graduating from their program. Carberry believes that education is the answer to breaking barriers. She was first in her family to graduate from college.

Since its beginning, Piberry Institute has grown from a single Medical Assistant Technician program and has offered programs in Practical Nursing and Medical Billing & Coding and Home Health Aid. For 2021, Ms. Carberry will begin to enroll students in PBI’s first associate degree program in Registered Nursing. She will maintain the Practical Nurse, Medical Assistant Technician, and Home Health Aid programs, as well as expand its program offering with Pharmacy Technology, Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Tech. It will expand to other programs in the healthcare field, and Ms. Carberry will continue to build the school that uplifts others through training and support and serves the residents of southernmost Miami, where Marion Carberry knows Piberry Institute can deliver.

Antes de fundar Piberry Institute, Marion se creía una neoyorquina dinámica destinada a la fama y la fortuna. Piberry es especial. La visión de Carberry es colaborar con una entidad sin fines de lucro que pueda servir como un recurso para sus estudiantes que requieren servicios sociales más enfocados. Para PBI, la Sra. Carberry está desarrollando un modelo de servicios profesionales para que todos los estudiantes trabajen al graduarse. Ella ve a Piberry Institute como un lugar con los mejores y más innovadores equipos de enfermería, simulaciones y espacio para ayudar a garantizar el bienestar de los estudiantes y sus familias. “Mi población estudiantil es 98 por ciento negra e hispana. Piberry Institute ha crecido desde sus humildes comienzos cuando Carberry y el Dr. Picou eran los únicos empleados. En 2017, el personal aumentó a tres y, a fines de 2019, aumentó a al menos 24 empleados en puestos de tiempo parcial y tiempo completo. La escuela proyectó un crecimiento aún mayor para 2020, pero COVID golpeó.

Para 2021, la Sra. Carberry comenzará a inscribir a estudiantes en el primer programa de grado asociado de PBI en Enfermería registrada. Benefits of Getting a COVID-19 Vaccine

y name is Rebecca Yamraj, I am 30 years old, live in Homestead, and I have been a registered nurse at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for almost five years.

My experience receiving the Covid-19 vaccine was great. An appointment was required, and after I received the vaccine, I was required to stay for 15 minutes for observation in case there was any reaction.

This vaccine felt like any other vaccine I have received before. The usual consent was required to be signed before the vaccine was administered, and I experienced a small amount of pain at the injection site after, which is common with injections.

I would tell people who are afraid of getting vaccinated that science works. Though this vaccine is new, this type of vaccine is not. Vaccinations also create herd immunity, which is when most of a population is immune to a disease, thus minimizing the spread. Diseases like polio and mumps have been virtually eradicated because of the herd immunity established by vaccinations, and the Covid-19 vaccine is a major step in finally getting the pandemic under control. It is important to stay informed but to be sure that the information is coming from valid and credible sources.

I think it is important to get vaccinated against Covid-19 because this virus is very dangerous. We are unsure of the long-term effects of this virus, so minimizing the risk of contracting it would be advantageous. In addition, we are around vulnerable populations in the community, such as children and the elderly. Though I may be of good health, those populations may not and receiving the vaccine will help minimize their exposure to the virus which can, unfortunately, be deadly.
