Este programa educativo brinda a los estudiantes acceso a excelentes herramientas, redes y la oportunidad de alcanzar su potencial. reakthrough Miami es un programa de 8 años de duración para estudiantes altamente motivados de escuelas y comunidades de escasos recursos en Miami-Dade. En realidad, alrededor del 94% de los estudiantes de Breakthrough asisten a las escuelas públicas del condado de Miami-Dade.

Centran sus esfuerzos en reclutar estudiantes de cuarto grado para comenzar el programa en el verano antes del quinto grado y permanecer en él hasta la graduación de la escuela secundaria, con el apoyo de 130 tutores. Breakthrough ahora está sirviendo activamente a unos 1.300 estudiantes en la escuela intermedia y secundaria, y cada año se reclutan alrededor de 100 niños de cuarto grado.

"Los alumnos sacrifican casi todos los sábados en la última parte de su verano para el programa educativo", dice Thomas Bean, miembro de la Junta y Director de Participación Pública y Comunitaria en Florida Power & Light (FPL).

mente porque muestran una gran aptitud", agrega. De hecho, la aceptación en el programa se basa en un proceso competitivo de aplicación y entrevista, en el que identifican a los estudiantes con motivación académica.

Los estudiantes deben cumplir con dos de los cinco factores de riesgo asociados a la no asistencia a la universidad, incluyendo: bajos ingresos familiares, pertenecer a minorías étnicas, a hogares monoparentales, ser primera generación en sus familias para asistir a la universidad y que el idioma principal no sea inglés.

"Si le das a los niños recursos y el entorno adecuado, te sorprenderá lo que pueden lograr", comenta Thomas Bean. "Estamos sacando a los niños de áreas y vecindarios violentos y los colocamos en entornos educativos con compañeros que son como ellos, pero rodeados de una atmósfera de apoyo y aliento".

Los niños generalmente asisten a clases los sábados y en verano visitan escuelas privadas de alto perfil. “Pueden ir a Carrollton, Miami Country Day y Ransom Everglades.

Estas son escuelas privadas que cuentan con recursos suficientes donde los alumnos ingresan y se sumergen en este entorno", agrega Bean.

Breakthough también coordina diferentes excursiones durante el verano. Por ejemplo, los alumnos que están interesados en carreras STEM tienen la oportunidad de recorrer la planta nuclear de Turkey Point. "Los estudiantes ven lo que es estar en una planta nuclear y terminan fascinados con la vida silvestre que está creciendo y prosperando.

Que no solo empleamos ingenieros, también empleamos biólogos y científicos ambientales", explica Thomas.

Breakthough está teniendo magníficos resultados. El 100% de la clase de 2018 se graduó a tiempo de la escuela secundaria y el 94% se matriculó en la universidad. "No hay muchas organizaciones que puedan reportar constantemente una tasa de graduación del 100%. Esto demuestra que Breakthrough tiene una visión clara de lo que quiere lograr en la vida de estos niños y el papel que quiere jugar en su futuro”, concluyó.

This educational program provides ambitious students with access to excellent tools, networks, and the opportunity to reach their potential. reakthrough Miami is an eight-year program for highly motivated students from under-resourced schools and communities in Miami-Dade.

Actually, around 94% of Breakthrough Scholars attend Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The program focuses its efforts on recruiting fourth graders to start the program in the summer before fifth grade and to remain in it until graduation from high school, with the support of 130 teaching fellows. Breakthrough now is actively serving around 1,300 students in middle school and high school, and every year around 100 kids are brought in and recruited out of fourth grade.

“Scholars sacrifice almost every Saturday in the last chunk of their summer for the educational programming,” says Thomas Bean, Board Member and Director of Public and Community Engagement at Florida Power & Light (FPL).

“These kids are not randomly selected.

These kids are specially recruited because they show high aptitude,” he adds. In fact, acceptance into the program is based on a competitive application and interview process, in which students who are academically motivated are identified.

Scholars must meet two of five risk factors associated with failure to attend college, including low family income, ethnic minority, single-parent household, first generation in the family to attend college, and primary language other than English.

“If you give kids resources and the right environment, you’d be amazed at what they can accomplish,” remarks Thomas Bean.

“We are taking kids out of rougher areas and neighborhoods and putting them in educational settings with peers that are like them but

surrounded by a supportive and encouraging atmosphere.”

Kids usually attend classroom training on Saturdays, and in summer, they get to visit high-profile private schools. “They’re able to go into Carrollton, Miami Country Day and Ransom Everglades. These are private schools that are well resourced and where scholars are able to go in and get immersed in these settings,” adds Bean.

Breakthrough also coordinates different field trips during the summer. For instance, scholars that are interested in STEM careers can tour the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. “Students get to see what it’s like to

be in a nuclear power plant, and they end up fascinated with the wildlife that’s growing and thriving, for we don’t employ just engineers, we also employ biologists and environmental scientists,” explains Thomas.

Breakthrough Miami is having magnificent results. For the 2018 class of graduating seniors, 100% graduated on time from high school, and 94% enrolled in college. “There aren’t that many organizations that can consistently report a 100% graduation rate. This demonstrates that Breakthrough Miami has a clear vision of what it wants to accomplish in these kids’ lives and the role it wants to play in their futures,” he concludes.

Luisa pasó de ser una inmigrante indocumentada a una exitosa emprendedora, graduarse de Georgetown University y luchar por la educación. Hoy se postula como candidata del Distrito 9 para la Junta Escolar de Miami-Dade.

on tan solo 8 años su madre la trajo, junto con su hermana, a iniciar una nueva vida en la Florida. Era 1998 y a su corta edad sintió por primera vez el frio intenso del aire acondicionado en la escuela debido al clima de Miami. Muy diferente del frío que sentía en la lluviosa Bogotá, Colombia, de donde proviene su familia.

Luisa siempre ha estado conectada desde su llegada a los Estados Unidos con el sistema escolar. “De hecho, mi madre decidió quedarse indocumentada para que mi hermana y yo pudiéramos tener una educación mucho mejor en Miami que la que podríamos obtener en Colombia".

Para ella, entrar a un sistema educativo con programas especiales como danzas, con profesoras que invirtieron mucho tiempo y dedicación, fue el punto de quiebre para que ella avanzara y enfocara su futuro profesional. En el Coral Reef Senior High School se involucró muchísimo a nivel distrital y estatal en diferentes organizaciones como Future Business Leaders of America, o el PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association).

“Fui varias veces a Tallahassee para hablar con nuestros representantes en busca de apoyo a la causa de las escuelas públicas”, comenta.

Irónicamente, en el tercer año de High School fue la primera vez que se dio cuenta que era indocumentada.

“Muchas puertas se estaban abriendo con organizaciones que estaba involucrada y no podía viajar por no tener papeles”. Sin embargo, pudo empezar su vida universitaria en Miami Dade College, logrando ser la presidente del Student Government. “Quería ser voluntaria, quería darle al College de mi tiempo, pues me dejó empezar como indocumentada cuando con otras universidades fue imposible”.

Para Luisa las escuelas públicas son la institución que este país le da a todo el mundo igualdad de oportunidades, sin importar su estatus legal, raza, genero, clase social o religión. “Es importante mantener esa promesa que hicimos como país, porque parte de esas libertades son las que han hecho a los Estados Unidos una potencia mundial. En parte esa premisa se ha perdido un poco, por eso debemos retomar ese camino y brindar una educación de calidad a todos los niños”.

tomó 18 años, y hoy es orgullosamente una ciudadana americana. Justamente su residencia permanente coincidió con una beca del Miami Foundation para estudiar en Georgetown University, donde se graduó con un título de economía política, y una especialización en educación, investigación y justicia.

Justo cuando estaba en Washington DC su espíritu emprendedor la llevó a empezar un negocio. Durante su último año en Georgetown, Luisa descubrió el potencial del nitrógeno líquido y lanzó lulu’s, su propia marca de helados de nitrógeno.

En mayo de 2015, decidió traer a Lulu’s a su ciudad natal y abrió su primera tienda en el centro de Miami.

En la actualidad, brinda empleo a 10 personas, entre ellos su familia y varios estudiantes locales, a quienes también entrena en finanzas personales y emprendimiento social.

A pesar de su éxito como emprendedora, Luisa nunca ha dejado de lado su pasión por la educación ni su necesidad por generar un cambio en su comunidad.

Cree firmemente en la educación como el gran ecualizador, y que todos los estudiantes deben tener las oportunidades que ella tuvo, que a pesar de las dificultades la llevaron al éxito.

Para cumplir esta promesa ella cree que el estado debe brindar una educación de calidad. Es por eso que decidió postularse como candidata del Distrito 9 para la Junta Escolar de Miami-Dade. “Considero que mi experiencia viviendo en esta comunidad, siendo estudiante toda la vida en Miami-Dade, además de tener un título en educación y experiencia en negocios, me dan la facultad para abordar las problemáticas y ayudar a crear el distrito escolar que queremos, donde cada uno de los niños debe tener acceso a una educación de alta calidad”, afirma.

Luisa entiende los obstáculos que vive nuestra comunidad día a día. Su experiencia de vida, liderazgo y fortaleza para perseguir sus sueños, le brinda la posibilidad de ser vocera y asumir los retos que surgen en el sistema escolar. “Necesitamos lideres con energía y creatividad, que usen la innovación y el espíritu emprendedor dentro en el distrito escolar para servir a los estudiantes y que alcancen su máximo potencial”, concluye.

Luisa went from being an undocumented immigrant to a successful entrepreneur, a graduate from Georgetown University and an advocate for education. Today she is running as District 9 candidate for the Miami-Dade School Board. hen she was eight years old, her mother brought her and her sister to Florida to start a better life. It was 1998, and at her young age, she felt for the first time the freezing cold of air conditioning at school safe from Miami’s weather—very different from that cold she felt in rainy Bogotá, Colombia, where her family comes from.

Since her arrival in America, Luisa has always had a special bond with the school system. “In fact, my mother decided to stay undocumented so my sister and I could have a much better education in Miami than the one I could get in Colombia,” she recalled.

For her, to be immersed in an educational system with special programs such as dance clubs, with teachers who invested a lot of time and dedication, was the breaking point to advance and focus her professional future. At Coral Reef Senior High School, she became very involved at district and state levels in different organizations such as Future Business Leaders of America, or the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association). “I went to Tallahassee several times to speak with our representatives in search of support for public schools,” she said.

Ironically, while a junior in high school, she realized for the first time that she was an undocumented immigrant. “At the time, many doors were opening for me with organizations that I was involved in, but I could not travel because I didn’t have a valid ID.” However, she was able to start her academic life at Miami-Dade College and became president of the student government. “I wanted to volunteer; I wanted to give my time back to the college because they let me enroll as an undocumented student when it was impossible with other universities.”

For Luisa, public schools are the institution through which this country provides equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of their legal status, race, gender, social class, or religion. “It is important to keep that promise we made as a country because this freedom is what has made the United States a world power. Part of that premise has been lost; however, we must return to

that path and provide quality education to all children.”

Her family’s petition for citizenship took them 18 years, but today she is proudly an American citizen. Her permanent residence arrived in perfect timing with a scholarship granted from the Miami Foundation to study at Georgetown University, where she graduated with a degree in political economy, and a minor in education, inquiry, and justice.

When she was in Washington, DC, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to start a business. During her senior year at Georgetown, Luisa discovered liquid nitrogen’s potential and launched Lulu’s, her own nitrogen ice cream brand.

In May 2015, she decided to bring Lulu’s to her hometown and opened her first shop in downtown Miami. Currently, she has ten employees, including her family and several local students, who are trained in personal finance and social entrepreneurship.

Despite her success as an entrepreneur, Luisa has never neglected her passion for education or her need to advocate for change in her community. She firmly believes in education as the great equalizer, and that all students should have the opportunities she had that led her to success.

To fulfill this promise, she thinks the state must provide quality education. That’s why she decided to run as District 9 candidate for the Miami-Dade School Board. “I believe that my experience living in this community, being a student all my life in Miami-Dade, in addition to having a degree in education and my business experience, gives me the potential to address issues and help create the school district we want, where each kid must have access to a high-quality education,” she said.

Luisa understands the obstacles that our community lives every day. Her life experience, leadership and strength to pursue her dreams give her the likelihood of being a spokeswoman, taking on the challenges that arise in the school system.

“We need leaders with energy and creativity, who use innovation and entrepreneurship within the school district to serve students and to allow them to reach their full potential,” she concluded.

Sixty years ago, Robert Moehling started a family-owned and operated business that is now considered a South Florida landmark. n November 1959, 6-year-old Robert Moehling was instructed by his farming father to sell cucumbers in an effort not to waste the produce. He then sat Robert on the corner of W 192nd Street and SW 344th Street, but no one stopped.

His father figured drivers could not see Robert, so the next day he painted a hurricane shutter in big red words saying, “Robert Is Here.” Robert sold out, and the rest is history. Sixty years later, Robert Is Here hasn’t changed location but now is a worldrenowned fruit stand and farm, which became a South Florida landmark attracting locals and tourists from all over the world.

“My mom and dad moved down here from Illinois and started farming when I was three months old,” says Robert. “I started helping them sell produce since I was little, as everybody knows.” At age nine, he hired a neighbor to work while he was in school, and by age fourteen, he bought ten acres of land and started farming. Now, he owns forty.

He not only built a business from scratch, but he also built a family. “When I turned about 27, a young lady came into the store, four weeks later we were engaged, and after four months, we got married,” remembers Robert. Her name is Tracey, and she has been working in the business alongside him since then.

Kids arrived and Robert Is Here became a business run by the whole family. “We had four children. I have an older son, Brandon.

I got an older daughter called Victoria, then came Robert, my younger son. We had a fourth child; her name is Savannah, like the city in Georgia,” he gently laughs.

As it happened, all four kids began working in the family business. “All kids had to come to work when they turned 11.” Years later, they went to college and came back home. “I didn’t go to college, so I forced them to go to school. It was such a good experience for them, like being on vacation, and then they decided to come back where they belong.”

As the family and business got bigger, grandchildren arrived. Moehling has around 60 employees that are part of the family.

Employees have him as a mentor with discipline and love who built with his own hands an inspirational success story. He is an organized man that understands policies and procedures. To work here, all applicants must follow the same processes, and before filling out an application, they have to undergo a math test.

Robert is a big friendly man who goes around the store greeting customers, taking care, and supervising all duties. Wearing shorts, a T-shirt and an apron, he points out and describes all the produce he has in the

stand, which in his own words, “are too many and too varied, so it’s not easy to count them all.”

“I’ll go slow,” he says while describing the fruits. “We got mangos, papayas, avocados, but also beautiful tomatoes and vegetables.

It’s just a mixture of everything. We got pitaya, guanabana, sapodilla, tamarindo, guavas, pomegranate, passion fruit and bananas,” and the list goes on.

Almost all fruits and vegetables are grown on their farm; others come from imports or different parts of the country. “I grow and sell. I buy and sell. People want to see variety in here. I can’t have the same produce year around. When something is out of season here, I bring it in from somewhere else,” mentions Robert.

Although Robert Is Here remains a fruit stand, it has grown into a complete tourist destination in South Florida, and it belongs to the historic Redland Tropical Trail; an Everglades traveler should stop in this place where the whole family can enjoy an animal farm, a playground, and picnic tables.

If you visit, Robert will greet you with a warm smile while suggesting you try a delicious tropical fruit you’ve never heard of. Before you leave, don’t forget to order a one-of-a kind milkshake made with any exotic fruit from the house.

Hace sesenta años, Robert Moehling comenzó un negocio familiar que ahora se considera un hito en el sur de la Florida. ue en noviembre de 1959 cuando Robert Moehling, de 6 años, recibió instrucciones de su padre agricultor de vender pepinos en un esfuerzo por no desperdiciar el producto. Luego sentó a Robert en la esquina de la W 192nd y SW 344th street, pero nadie se detuvo.

Su padre pensó que los conductores no podían ver a Robert, así que al día siguiente pintó un aviso con grandes palabras rojas que decían: "Robert está aquí". Robert vendió todo y el resto es historia. Sesenta años después, Robert Is Here no ha cambiado de ubicación, pero ahora es un puesto de frutas y una granja de renombre mundial, que se convirtió en un hito en el sur de la Florida que atrae a locales y turistas de todo el mundo.

"Mi mamá y mi papá se mudaron aquí desde Illinois y comenzaron a cultivar cuando yo tenía tres meses", dice Robert.

"Comencé a ayudarlos a vender productos desde que era pequeño, como todos saben".

A los nueve años, contrató a un vecino para trabajar mientras estaba en la escuela, y a los catorce años, compró 10 acres de tierra y comenzó a cultivar. Ahora, tiene cuarenta.

No solo construyó un negocio desde cero, sino que también formó una familia. "Cuando cumplí 27 años, una joven entró en la tienda, cuatro semanas después nos comprometimos, y después de cuatro meses nos casamos", recuerda Robert. Su nombre es Tracey, y ha estado trabajando en el negocio junto a él desde entonces.

Los niños llegaron y Robert Is Here se convirtió en un negocio dirigido por toda la familia. “Tuvimos cuatro hijos. Tengo un hijo mayor, Brandon. Tengo una hija mayor llamada Victoria, luego vino Robert, mi hijo menor. Tuvimos una cuarta hija; se llama Savannah, como la ciudad de Georgia”, se ríe amablemente.

Como le sucedió a él, los cuatro niños comenzaron a trabajar en el negocio familiar.

"Todos los niños tuvieron que empezar a trabajar cuando cumplieron 11 años". Años después, fueron a la universidad y regresaron a casa. “No fui a la universidad, así que los forcé a ir. Fue una experiencia muy buena para ellos, como estar de vacaciones, y luego decidieron regresar a donde pertenecen".

A medida que la familia creció, ya que llegaron los nietos, el negocio también. Moehling tiene alrededor de 60 empleados que forman parte de la familia. Los empleados lo tienen como un mentor lleno de disciplina y amor que construyó con sus propias manos una inspiradora historia de éxito. Es un hombre organizado que entiende de políticas y procedimientos. Para trabajar aquí, todos los solicitantes deben seguir el mismo proceso y, antes de completar una solicitud, deben someterse a una prueba de matemáticas.

Robert es un gran hombre amable que recorre la tienda saludando a los clientes, cuidando y supervisando todas las tareas.

Vestido con un short, una camiseta y un delantal, comenzó a señalar y describir todos

los productos que tiene en el stand, que en sus propias palabras, "son tantos y tan variados que son difíciles de contar".

"Iré despacio", dice mientras describe las frutas. “Tenemos mangos, papayas, aguacates, pero también hermosos tomates y vegetales. Es solo una mezcla de todo. Tenemos pitaya, guanábana, zapote, tamarindo, guayaba, granadilla, maracuyá y plátanos”, y la lista puede continuar.

La mayoría de las frutas y verduras se cultivan en su granja; otras provienen de importaciones o diferentes partes del país. “Cultivo y vendo. Yo compro y vendo. La gente quiere ver variedad aquí. No puedo tener el mismo producto durante todo el año. Cuando algo está fuera de temporada aquí, lo saco de otro lugar”, menciona Robert.

Aunque Robert Is Here sigue siendo un puesto de frutas, se ha convertido en un destino turístico importante en el sur de Florida; donde un viajero de los Everglades debe detenerse, además de pertenecer al histórico sendero tropical Redland. Un lugar donde toda la familia puede disfrutar, ya que cuentan con una granja de animales, un área de juegos y mesas de picnic.

Si lo visita, Robert lo saludará con una cálida sonrisa y le sugerirá probar una deliciosa fruta tropical de la que nunca ha oído hablar. Antes de partir, no olvide pedir un batido hecho con frutas exóticas de la casa, que nunca podrá probar en ningún otro lugar.

Nearly every adult has a credit score, which can fluctuate daily. Various factors, including a person's age and track record in regard to paying bills, combine to produce a credit score. According to the credit reporting agency ExperianTM, credit scores range from 300 to 850, though most consumers' scores fall somewhere between 600 and 750. The Fair Isaac Corporation create what's known as a FICO® Score, which is used by many lenders to determine prospective borrowers' credit worthiness. FICO® scores are often characterized using five terms: • Very poor: Scores between 300 and 579 • Fair: Scores between 580 and 669 • Good: Scores between 670 and 739 • Very good: Scores between 740 and 799 • Exceptional: Score between 800 and 850 Some consumers may feel that these are just numbers on a page. But in certain instances, such as when consumers attempt to buy a home, a credit score can have a dra-

matic effect on a person's monthly budget.

When borrowing to buy a home, borrowers with desirable credit scores may be eligible for considerably lower interest rates than borrowers whose scores fall into the "Very poor" or "Fair" range. Over the length of a standard, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, a low interest rate can save borrowers tens of thousands of dollars in interest fees.

In addition to paying more in interest fees, ExperianTM notes that borrowers with subpar credit scores may have to do even more to earn the trust of lenders.

Borrowers whose scores fall into the "Very poor" range may be required to pay a fee or make a deposit when opening a new credit account, and some might not be approved for credit at all.

Borrowers whose scores fall into the "Fair" may be classified by lenders as subprime borrowers, making it hard for them to open new credit accounts or secure loans without a cosigner.

Consumers can benefit from knowing their credit scores and how to improve them. Taking measures to improve low or subpar credit scores can put more money in consumers' pockets, both in the immediate and distant future.
