The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade une fuerzas con diferentes organizaciones y lleva a cabo campañas enfocadas en Desarrollo de Liderazgo, Seguridad Económica, Salud y Libertad contra la Violencia. n 1993, tras la destrucción dejada por el huracán Andrew, un pequeño grupo de mujeres con solo $5,000 en sus bolsillos decidió lanzar The Women's Fund Miami-Dade, con un objetivo en mente: transformar las vidas de mujeres y niñas en el condado de Miami-Dade.

Desde entonces, esta organización sin fines de lucro ha estado abogando por los derechos de las mujeres que cubren diferentes aspectos que afectan las vidas de las mujeres que viven en el sur de la Florida, tomando medidas a través de la promoción, educación, investigación y otorgamiento de subvenciones.

En sus primeros 25 años, gran parte de su trabajo estaba destinado a llenar las grandes brechas de financiación de los programas que trabajan con mujeres y jovencitas. "Llevamos más de veinticinco años trabajando para empoderar a las mujeres y las niñas mediante el apoyo a cientos de programas innovadores", dijo Kathy Andersen, directora ejecutiva. "Ahora nos enfocamos en la colaboración, reuniendo a donantes de ideas afines, organizaciones comunitarias e individuos para usar nuestro poder colectivo para crear cambios en las políticas y prácticas", agregó.

En los últimos años, The Women's Fund ha asumido un papel visible al unir fuerzas con diferentes organizaciones y conjuntamente ha realizado campañas basadas en sus cuatro pilares estratégicos. Por ejemplo, bajo su programa Freedom from Violence, en octubre de 2018, el Fondo abordó la violencia doméstica porque "una de cada tres mujeres a nivel local y nacional lo viven", dijo Andersen.

La campaña se promocionó en las paradas de Metrorail y de autobuses, a través de carteles publicitarios con la línea de ayuda para

denunciar la violencia doméstica usando el lema: "porque nuestra comunidad necesita saber a qué número llamar".

Otras campañas se han centrado en aspectos como la falta de vivienda o la salud mental y el suicidio. El Fondo trabajó con el Homeless Trust para ayudar a madres, jóvenes LGBTQ y mujeres sin hogar. En diciembre de 2018, la salud mental y el suicidio fueron la temática, ya que el suicidio es la segunda causa de muerte en niñas y mujeres jóvenes de 10 a 24 años.

En febrero de 2020, el Fondo se asoció con el Comité Anfitrión del Super Bowl de Miami y la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado de MiamiDade, y lanzó la campaña “Stop Sex Trafficking”, con el objetivo de detener el tráfico sexual en el condado de Miami-Dade antes y después del Super Bowl LIV celebrado en Miami.

"En nuestra actividad de convocatoria, nuestro tema colectivo ha sido ‘Un equipo’ para representar el trabajo decidido de todas las agencias del orden y socios comunitarios que trabajan juntos", dijo Andersen. "Estamos unidos para construir la fuerza más grande del país para combatir el tráfico sexual. Cuidado comprador y traficante. Usted será expuesto y procesado", concluyó.

The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade joins forces with different organizations and runs campaigns focused on leadership development, economic security, health, and freedom from violence. n 1993, in the wake of Hurricane Andrew’s destruction, a small group of women with just $5,000 in their pockets decided to launch The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade, with one aim in mind: to transform the lives of women and girls in Miami-Dade County.

Since then, this nonprofit has been advocating for women’s rights covering different aspects that affect the lives of women living in South Florida, taking action through advocacy, education, research, and grant-making.

In their first 25 years, much of their work was intended to fill the massive funding gaps in programs working with girls and young women. Through their grant-making programs, they jumpstarted, incubated, and supported other community organizations in their service to thousands of women.

According to their published figures, in their first 25 years, The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade gave out approximately $3.7 million in grants to 485 organizations and programs, making a difference in the lives of 60,000 women and girls.

However, after this long period, The Fund decided to shift its program and strategy to focus on critical issues with greater impact in the community. Their new focus aims to promote systemic change in four areas: leadership development, economic security, health, and freedom from violence.

“We’ve been working for more than twenty-five years empowering women and girls by supporting hundreds of innovative programs,” said Executive Director Kathy Andersen. “We now focus on collaboration, bringing together like-minded funders, community organizations, and individuals to use our collective power to create change in policy and practice,” she added.

taken a visible role joining forces with different organizations and jointly have run campaigns based on their four strategic pillars.

For instance, under their freedom from violence program, In October 2018, the fund tackled domestic violence because “one in three women locally and nationally will experience it,” Andersen said.

The campaign took over Metrorail stops and bus shelters and posted billboards emblazoned with the helpline to report domestic violence using the tagline: “because our community needs to know what number to call.”

Other campaigns have focused on aspects as homelessness or mental health and suicide. The fund worked with the Homeless Trust to assist mothers, LGBTQ youth, and women without homes. In December 2018,

mental health and suicide were the issues, as suicide is the second leading cause of death in girls and young women aged 10 to 24.

In February 2020, the fund partnered with The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office to launch the Stop Sex Trafficking campaign, to stop sex trafficking in Miami-Dade County leading up to and beyond the 2020 Super Bowl LIV held in Miami.

“In our convening activity, our collective theme has been ‘One Team’ to represent the determined work of all of the law enforcement agencies and community partners working together,” said Andersen. “We are united to build the strongest force in the country to combat sex trafficking. Beware, buyers and traffickers. You will be exposed and prosecuted,” she concluded.

Mortgage lenders can be found all over the internet, and the sheer volume of lender options can make it hard for home buyers to find the right fit for them. Couple that with lending-related terminology that many first-time buyers may be unfamiliar with, and it’s easy to see why prospective homeowners can feel overwhelmed about the process of borrowing money to buy their homes.

“This process gets more complicated the more options you have. First, make sure the lender speaks your same language; you need to make sure you understand everything the lender is explaining to you. Second, make sure he or she is honest; sometimes we don’t like what we hear, but it’s important that we understand the difference between the truth and someone that is telling us what we want to hear. Do not let anyone pull your credit at the beginning. I would first make sure the loan officer understands my income and expenses, then if those numbers

amount to what I am looking for, then I would give permission”, say Ledesma.

When looking for a mortgage lender, prospective homeowners should never forget that the choice of lender is, in most cases, entirely theirs to make. When making that decision, a host of variables should be considered. The following are three such factors that, upon ample consideration, may help buyers rest easy knowing they did their due diligence when looking for lenders.

1. Reputation/recommendation Just like other businesses, lenders have reputations, and oftentimes those reputations can be determined via some simple online research. Peruse online reviews to determine what past buyers felt about a given lender. If possible, ask friends, family or colleagues who they worked with to secure a mortgage.

Fees should not be mistaken for interest rates, which change daily and are typically dictated by the financial industry and prospective buyers’ credit history and financial standing. When speaking with potential lenders, ask for a rundown of their fees, and the services those fees include, and closing cost estimates in writing, then compare and contrast fees and costs of various lenders before making a final decision.

“Be careful of the bait and switch. I have seen big lender, banking institutions do this as well as small ones, where they don’t disclose the origination fees correctly, the normal fees are processing and Underwriting, anything above that is basically the cost for the rate . also understand when you see an estimate the bank is only responsible for Origination fees and fees relating to the loan, what I normally see is they will lower title fees , insurance fees and other fees

that the bank doesn’t control l to make the total estimate look lower but then when the time comes to close and all those things go up they explain at the moment that those are not the things the lender is responsible for and by that time you are too late to back out from the loan”, warns Ledesma.

Some lenders may charge considerably more in fees than others, so buyers should put in the effort necessary to comparison shop.

3. Personal interaction Buyers, especially those who have never before purchased a home, will likely have lots of questions. This is where personal interaction with a prospective lender should be noted. Securing financing for a home purchase can sometimes seem like an impersonal process, but it doesn’t have to be, and many lenders are happy to answer buyers’ questions. Lenders who answer questions quickly and clearly can make buyers more comfortable about the home buying process. Buyers may want to avoid lenders who seem evasive or unwilling to answer questions in writing.

“Please understand that a lender sees hundreds of cases a day, and even though your situation might be unique, I recommend you speak to the lender for about three minutes on the phone before you sit down to meet with him or her. Your time is valuable, so the last thing you want to do is have to take off work to meet with a lender and not be prepared or bring what is needed in ordered for the lender to better answer your questions. I personally don’t meet with anyone whom I haven’t spoken to for at least three minutes on the phone”, Ledesma she con-

Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways.

• Small businesses employ local residents. The Statistics Department of Labor Survey indicates companies with fewer than 100 employees employed 69.7 of the population in 2017. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8 percent of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016.

According to Kerry Black, CEO South Dade Chamber of Commerce, “Almost all businesses in Miami-Dade are small, with 98.2 percent employing fewer than 100 workers. Most businesses –81.3 percent– are microbusinesses, i.e., they employ fewer than 10 workers. These businesses are not just the backbone of our economy, they provide the lifeblood to our South Dade communities”.

• Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent

about 96 percent of employer firms in highpatenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.

• Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities.

“The Florida Main Street program encourages economic development and is dedicated to bringing jobs, dollars and people back to Florida’s historic districts. A revitalized district attracts new industry and strengthens service and retail job markets.

In addition, revitalization stabilizes and improves the area’s tax base, while also protecting existing investments.

In an economically healthy downtown, the small business owners can afford to maintain their historic buildings and preserve an important part of the community’s heritage and sense of place. The small business owner is a key player in this revitalization effort”, said Yvonne Knowles, Executive Director, Homestead Main Street.

• Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of Main Street, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have en-

dured.

• Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles.

“When a person supports a local business, they are directly contributing to the economic development of that community.

They are helping to increase the property value of homes, bring more businesses to the community, and helping out local schools. Furthermore, when they buy from a local business, it tends to create a buzz about the community which will bring more people help and thus inject more capital into the community’, said Erick Caceres, Business Development Officer, Center State Bank.

• Small businesses keep money in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads and municipal services.

new staffing app just launched in Miami last month; it’s called Instawork. It helps hospitality businesses like bars, restaurants, and events connect with thousands of high-quality workers for gig work.

Traditionally, the hospitality industry suffers from high turnover rates and short-term, highly seasonal positions. Instawork then seeks to address both issues by connecting those businesses in need with qualified workers on demand.

In other words, Instawork is filling a growing void, as managers who have struggled to recruit permanent employees turn to the ondemand services for workers trained as dishwashers, servers, or line cooks, among others.

“Business partners can access the app for free and post available job offers, including information like location, pay rate, time and date. Then we match the offer with our large database of qualified workers in the area who meet the criteria and fill the position,” said Andreina Morales, general manager for Instawork in Miami.

This launch marks the first market for Instawork in Florida, as the Company is betting to impact an industry that employs more than 142,000, and the city’s tourism industry is growing rapidly, according to South Florida’s Business Journal report from 2019.

The company says Instawork professionals make an average of $16 per hour working an Instawork gig, which is substantially higher than minimum wage. According to Morales, “So far over 6,000 people have already downloaded Instawork in Miami to find work as bartenders, cooks, servers, dishwashers, catering staff, and more.”

“Miami has been one of our most successful launches nationwide and has exceeded all expectations. We are working with great brands within the hospitality industry in the city,” she commented.

According to the company, what makes Instawork different from other apps is that it carries out a thorough verification process.

“No one can take a job until we verify their references, check their profile, and do a background check. We make sure workers have one or two years of experience and meet the profile and job criteria,” she mentioned.

Instawork and other companies are part of a market trend known as the ‘gig economy,’ which is changing the dynamic of work in the 21st century, as businesses need to evolve with the culture of the workforce.

Instawork was founded in San Francisco, California, in 2015 and so far has entered 15 US cities, including Miami.
