L

e Jardin Community Center, Inc. has served the people of Homestead with a whole-child, whole-family approach for more than three decades, providing services for thousands of families in its time. Now, thanks to a $31.5 million expansion grant, Le Jardin announces an eighth facility as well as new services.

One of 62 applicants in the U.S., Le Jardin was the only program in Florida to receive the grant awarded through the Department

of Health and Human Services, Administration of Children and Families, Office of Head Start, as part of the Early Head Start Expansion Funding Opportunity.

The new facility at Harris Field, formerly the YMCA, brings Le Jardin up to eight facilities in total and will improve the lives of more than 300 children and their families with access to high-quality education and comprehensive services. Le Jardin’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs will now serve over 1,000 children and families in the community.

The economic impact of the new facility on the community can also not be understated, as the lease agreement brings in a new revenue stream for the city, to the tune of approximately $250,000. CFO/COO of Le Jardin, Audelia Martinez, had this to say, “We are exploring new avenues to bring significant partnerships that will not only benefit Le Jardin’s children and families but the Homestead community as a whole.”

In addition to the new facility, Le Jardin is expanding with new Mobile Health and Mental Health Service buses. Through collaboration with FIU, CHI, and Meraki Health and Wellness, key services will be provided to the children and families of Homestead. “We want partners who understand our community and are eager to form meaningful connections and strong ties with our families,” said Eduardo Berrones, Chief Executive Officer of Le Jardin.

Le Jardin has provided comprehensive services to the Homestead community for more than three decades, ensuring that local children and families, including those with disabilities, have access to education, social services, dental care, health screenings, and healthy meals. The dedicated teachers and staff go above and beyond, creating safe, nurturing environments, and providing care to the community.

While the program is focused on education for Homestead’s youth, Le Jardin also caters to the children’s families and their needs.

Berrones added, “Our objective is to phase the families out of poverty and set them up for success.”

Planning for more expansion is underway, and the future could see the addition of a Wellness Center and even some Youth Sports leagues. Commenting on this, Berrones said, “We want to reaffirm to the community that Le Jardin is a valuable asset.”

he most wonderful time of the year is around the corner. The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, with many Floridians decorating their homes with lights and festive décor and preparing to host fun gatherings.

While sprucing up the home for the holidays and welcoming family and friends back into our homes is cause for happiness, the holidays are a time when customers may use more energy than usual. To keep things merry and bright, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is offering 10 easy, safe and affordable ways to save money on your home’s energy bill.

Try implementing the energy saving tips below and read on about how you can use FPL’s Energy Manager to stay on top of your energy use.

Keep lights/décor bright and energy use low Set it and forget it by using an automatic timer to control when your lights and cheerful inflatables turn on and off. The fewer the hours, the less energy you use.

cal decorations such as making your own wreaths, ribbons or ornaments – all festive decorations that require no energy.

Consider using smart power strips to avoid your holiday décor from drawing phantom energy, meaning the device appears off but is still drawing power while plugged in.

Cook an energy-efficient holiday feast If you use a conventional oven, try to bake several dishes at the same time and use ceramic or glass kitchenware as it allows you to lower your oven by 25 degrees with the same cooking time – keeping your kitchen and home cool.

When possible, use small cooking appliances in your kitchen such as the toaster oven, which saves up to 70% on energy use.

Spend more time with family and less on washing dishes by skipping pre-rinse and running your dishwasher once it’s full to avoid wasting up to 20 gallons of water per day.

Enjoy dips in temperatures Each degree you raise your thermostat can save about 2-5% on cooling costs. If you need to heat your home, set your ther-

mostat to 68 degrees and keep your fan set on “auto” to save energy.

Use the sun to heat your home by keeping your south-facing windows clean and open those curtains during the day and close all curtains at night.

Maintain proper airflow by keeping interior doors and vents open to help air circulate without obstruction.

iabetes affects millions of people across the globe, and its prevalence has risen significantly in recent decades. Data from the World Health Organization indicates that the number of people with diabetes nearly quadrupled between 1980 and 2014. Life with diabetes can be challenging, especially when the disease leads to additional complications like vision problems.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that diabetes affects the eyes when blood glucose, or blood sugar, is too high. The damage to the eyes caused by diabetes occurs over time and can contribute to poor vision and, in certain instances, blindness. As their vision worsens, people with diabetes may be diagnosed with diabetic eye disease, which is an umbrella term used to describe a handful of condi-

tions.

Which conditions are included under the umbrella of diabetic eye disease?

The NIDDK notes that diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma are some of the conditions included under the umbrella of diabetic eye disease.

Though they might all be referred to as diabetic eye disease, each condition is different.

Diabetic retinopathy Diabetic retinopathy affects the retina, which is the inner lining at the back of each eye. The retina senses light and turns it into signals that the brain then decodes. When a person has diabetic retinopathy, damaged blood vessels affect the retina. These blood vessels may weaken, bulge or leak into the retina during early stages of the disease. If the disease worsens, some blood vessels may close off and cause new blood vessels

to grow on the surface of the retina. Serious vision problems can develop when this occurs.

Diabetic macular edema The Mayo Clinic reports that diabetic macular edema occurs when tiny bulges protrude from the vessel walls and leak or ooze fluid and blood into the retina. This leakage causes swelling in the macula, which is the central part of the retina. This is a serious issue, as the NIDDK notes that the macula is necessary for reading, driving and seeing faces. Swelling in the macula can eventually contribute to partial vision loss or blindness.

Cataracts Cataracts is not exclusive to people with diabetes. However, the NIDDK reports that the risk for cataracts is greater for people with diabetes than it is for people who are not diabetic. Cataracts are a condition marked by a clouding of the lens of the eye. According to the Cleveland Clinic, when a cataract clouds over the lens of the eye, the eye cannot focus light in the way it needs to.

That can lead to blurry vision or vision loss.

Cataracts can occur naturally as a person ages, but the Cleveland Clinic notes that cataracts can form more quickly in people with diabetes.

Glaucoma Glaucoma also is an umbrella term that refers to various conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is a bundle of nerves that connects the eye to the brain.

The NIDDK notes that diabetes doubles a person’s chances of having glaucoma. Glaucoma is often marked by gradual vision loss, and the National Institutes of Health note that as glaucoma worsens, individuals may begin to notice they can no longer see things off to the side. Early treatment of glaucoma can prevent further damage, though there’s no cure. If glaucoma is not treated early, it can lead to vision loss and blindness.

Diabetic eye disease can have serious consequences. Individuals with diabetes must be vigilant and address any issues with their vision immediately.

nnual holiday bazaars are a tradition in many communities, and the success of such events has led many towns to schedule similar events throughout the year. Community festivals and weekend marketplaces can be great opportunities for small businesses to connect with locals and generate revenue.

Such events can be even more lucrative for small businesses that plan ahead.

• Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month.

Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

• Make things easy for customers. Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touchless payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contactless payment

usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

• Brand, brand, brand. The National Federation of Independent Businesses recommends that small businesses make everything in their festival or marketplace space about their brands. Storage containers, banners, price tags, and the clothing personnel wear should reflect the brand.
