Queremos ayudar a todos los jóvenes que podamos a obtener un diploma de escuela secundaria de MDCPS ", mencionó Gina MontagninoFiske, Directora del Distrito de Acceleration Academies en Miami-Dade.

Los estudiantes, o los candidatos de graduación (GCs), como se les llama, reciben un "plan de aprendizaje personalizado", según sus objetivos profesionales, ya sean militares, universitarios, de promoción, de trabajo o de iniciar su propio negocio. Por lo tanto, el programa no solo ayuda a los estudiantes en su camino hacia la graduación, sino que también trabaja para garantizar que todos sus GCs estén mejor preparados después de la graduación al ofrecer entrenamiento práctico sobre la vida y su carrera.

ACCELERATION ACADEMIES Using an innovative, non-traditional method, Acceleration Academies has served over 600 previously disengaged students in Miami-Dade.

n its second-year partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), and with operating sites in Hialeah, Homestead, North Miami Beach, and a new location in central Miami, Acceleration Academies, a nationally accredited high school re-engagement program, is redefining the traditional school model and helping young adults overcome real-life challenges to earn their district-issued high school diplomas tuition-free.

Acceleration Academies offer high school dropouts the possibility of earning their high school diplomas by providing a blended learning model in which students can access their coursework online day and night while having the support of licensed teachers, tutors, career and life coaches that are ready to assist their educational journeys.

“We accept students ages 16-20 as long as they have completed middle school, or as

long as they are at high school level and not actively enrolled. We want to help as many kids as we can to earn high school diplomas from MDCPS,” mentioned Gina MontagninoFiske, Miami-Dade Acceleration Academies District Director.

Students, or graduation candidates (GCs) as they are called, are given a “personalized learning plan,” depending on their professional goals, whether military, college, promotion, job or business startups. Therefore, the program not only helps students in their paths to graduation but also works to ensure that all its graduation candidates are best prepared for life post-graduation by offering hands-on life and career coaching.

“We offer flexible scheduling which allows GCs to do their work at home and some of their work at our academy. Our blended learning model gives them the flexibility to do their coursework anywhere with Internet access,” said Mrs. Montagnino-Fiske. “Ho-

wever, students need to access the Acceleration Academies building for their scheduled on-site hours each week,” she added.

Students take one course at a time, at their own learning pace via a competencybased platform. Moreover, qualified professionals and certified teachers work with GCs in small groups or one-on-one settings, creating opportunities to develop substantial relationships with them.

On average, 53% of students complete ten or more courses during an academic year. Since the opening of the Acceleration Academies, nearly 70 former Miami-Dade County Public School students have earned regular district-issued diplomas through the program.

a historia de Javier Morejón es una historia de éxito y superación. Después de salir de prisión le fue difícil encontrar un trabajo. Sin embargo, tuvo la suerte de encontrar un empleo en una compañía que se dedicaba a hacer tours en los Everglades.

Aprendió del negocio y a raíz de su buen desempeño, al año de trabajar allí, pidió un aumento a sus jefes. Este le fue negado ya que por su situación de ex convicto sus jefes creían que no habría manera que pudiera ganar más dinero en otro lugar.

Sin embargo, decidió renunciar, y ya que tenía una visión clara del negocio y de su operación, decidió montar una empresa que se dedicara a lo mismo, pero con un diferencial, un servicio personalizado y privado. “Mi jefe me dijo, no te doy ni un año y ya vamos para nueve” dice con orgullo Javier. Irónicamente el que salió del negocio dos años después fue su ex jefe.

began eight years ago as a company dedicated to offering visitors a private and exclusive adventure in the Everglades.

avier Morejon’s story is one of success and improvement. After leaving prison, he found it difficult to find a job. However, he was lucky enough to get hired at a company that provided airboat tours in the Everglades.

He quickly learned the business, and as a result of his excellent performance, after a year of working there, he asked for a salary increase from his bosses. They refused to give him a raise because of his ex-convict status. His boss believed that as an ex-convict, he would never have a chance to make more money elsewhere.

However, he decided to leave, and because he had a clear vision of the business and its operation, he started a similar airboat touring company, but with a difference: to offer an exclusive and private service.

“My boss told me, you won’t make it to a year, and now we're about to be nine,” says Javier proudly. Ironically, the one

who left the business two years later was his former boss.

Unlike his former boss, Javier has been in charge of the business, which is what he considers the key to success. “Our company is a small family business. My wife Christie, my daughter and my brother-in-law work with me; in total, we are ten employees. This approach translates into a better-quality service that we provide to our customers.”

FPL'S TURKEY POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Florida Power & Light (FPL) y el condado de Miami-Dade, desarrolaron uno de los proyectos más innovadores, sostenibles y prometedores en el estado de Florida que protegerá nuestro suministro de agua. lorida Power & Light Company y el Condado de Miami-Dade han desarrollado un proceso innovador de tratamiento de agua para reutilizar 60 millones de galones de aguas residuales tratadas cada día. En otras palabras, como parte de este proyecto, las aguas residuales diarias de Miami-Dade se reutilizarán en lugar de terminar en pozos profundos o en el océano.

Reuse 60 Million Gallons of Wastewater Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Miami-Dade County developed one of the most innovative, sustainable and promising projects in the State of Florida to help protect our water supply. fter months of extensive study, Florida Power & Light Company and Miami-Dade County have developed an innovative water treatment process to reuse 60 million gallons of treated wastewater every day. In other words, as part of this project, Miami-Dade’s daily wastewater will be reused instead of ending up in deep wells or

the ocean.

Reusing the water would be part of a plan between FPL and Miami-Dade County to reduce the amount of county wastewater going into the ocean. “This will also eliminate Turkey Point’s nuclear plant use of water from the aquifer by providing a drought-proof supply of highly-treated water to improve the water quality of the

plant’s cooling canals,” said Bianca Cruz, FPL’s spokesperson.

The proposed treatment facility would be able to treat up to 60 million gallons of wastewater a day, enough to generate 45 million gallons a day of usable water. Up to 15 million gallons would be used daily to cool the natural gas unit and 30 million gallons for the canals.

The wastewater treatment consists of a five-step process that will ensure wastewater is safe prior to being reused, and this is the same five-step process used to treat drinking water.

During the treatment process, 99 percent of key impurities will be removed including viruses, bacteria, nutrients, and other compounds.

The alliance between FPL and the county is the most economical way to help Miami-Dade comply with the state’s mandate to reuse 117 million gallons of wastewater a day. Six years are left to meet this mandate. This collaboration with FPL would save MiamiDade taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars compared to any other proposal for meeting the requirement.

The entire number of gallons of water—117 million—needed to comply with the state’s mandate could potentially be treated each day as a result of this project, and the additional water could be routed to local wetlands for rehydration.

“In the long term, the treatment facility could treat more wastewater and reach the state’s mandated target. Therefore, it would mean an economic benefit for taxpayers, but, more importantly, it would help safeguard the environmental sustainability of our local ecosystems, as this water could potentially be used to rehydrate the Everglades, which needs plenty of water,” added Bianca Cruz.

Muchos estudios han encontrado que las artes marciales y el autismo van bien juntos; los niños autistas fueron mucho más sociables con sus compañeros, su coordinación física mejoró, al igual que su autoestima.

With a constant search for effective therapies and activities that help develop cognitive and motor skills of autistic children, MARTIAL ARTS are now a positive alternative for kids living with this condition.

Estudios científicos han proporcionado evidencia de que el entrenamiento en artes marciales podría ser un método eficaz para afectar positivamente la actividad motora en el espectro del autismo, ya que los niños involucrados en los estudios se han beneficiado positivamente del entrenamiento.

he relationship between martial arts and autism has been getting much attention recently. Many studies have found that martial arts and autism go well together: autistic children were a lot more social with their peers, and their physical coordination improved as did their self-esteem.

Significant motor issues such as compulsive movement, vocalization, and stereotyped hand and body movements are common in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

While occupational and physical therapy practices can be beneficial in assisting many with ASD, additional physical activities may be helpful as well.

For instance, training in traditional martial arts means emphasizing skill and character development as well as movement patterns.

Therefore, repeated patterns of attack and defense serve as an excellent tool for physical and mental training.

that martial arts training could be an effective method for positively affecting motor activity in the autism spectrum as children involved in the reviews have all undoubtedly benefited from the practice.

According to Livan Concepcion, owner and director at the American Ju-Jitsu Center in Homestead, “Most children with autism lack balance skills; in consequence, martial arts help them improve their motor skills, coordination and balance. Likewise, practicing these disciplines helps children improve their attention span since many of them also have attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).”

In addition to that, a 2010 study by the University of Wisconsin found that children doing martial arts were more sociable with their peers and had greater self-esteem. Not only did they improve in skill at martial arts, but parents reported positive effects on other activities at school and at home.

Martial arts classes require lots of social in-

teraction. There is an interaction between the teacher and student, as well as plenty of connection with other classmates. Many drills and activities require a partner and cooperation with many other students; this helps in nurturing a comfort level for autistic kids, as they become more familiar with their surroundings and peers.

Additionally, “Martial arts offer its practitioners the opportunity to advance individually according to their levels of progress. In this case, children with autism feel more satisfied to practice because there is no pressure from their peers when things do not go well, as in other team sports. This helps them a lot to develop their self-esteem,” says Livan Concepcion.

How Pediatricians Screen for

ediatricians start screening your baby for signs of developmental or communication challenges like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from his or her very first well-child visit. Your pediatrician observes how your baby giggles, looks to you for reassurance, tries to regain your attention during a conversation, points or waves, responds to his or her name, and cries.

Those observations in combination with family history, health examinations, and parental perspectives remain extremely valuable in helping identify children at risk for ASD. Formalized Autism Screening Recommended at the 18- and 24-Month Well-Child Visits: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends screening all children for autism at the 18 and 24-month wellchild visits in addition to regular developmental surveillance. This type of screening can identify children with significant developmental and behavioral challenges early, when they may benefit most from intervention, as well as those with other developmental difficulties. For screening to be effective, it must be applied to all children – not only those with symptoms.

Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (MCHAT): In most offices, pediatricians use the MCHAT, a 23-point questionnaire filled out by parents. Most families find it easy to fill out.

Using this standardized screening, pediatricians

can pick up children at risk for ASD and will be prompted to start conversations about language delay, concerns about behavior, or possible next steps for a child at risk with additional genetic, neurologic, or developmental testing.

Screening Isn’t Diagnosing!

It’s important to note that screening isn’t diagnosing. If your child has a positive screen for an ASD, it doesn’t mean he or she will be diagnosed on the spectrum. And further, if your child screens normally but you continue to worry about ASD, don’t be shy. Screening tests are just that—screening—and don’t identify all children with ASD. The rate of success for the M-CHAT, for example, isn’t 100%, so it is used in combination with health and family history to identify children at risk. Your opinions as a parent are irreplaceable and of the most importance.

If You Are Concerned and Your Child Has Not Been Formally Screened: Talk with your pediatrician about doing a formal screening. Many screening tools are available.

But know this: If you are concerned about your child’s communication or behavior due to a family history of ASD, the way he or she talks or acts, or other people’s comments about his or her behavior, don’t wait to talk with your pediatrician about doing more. If the first doctor doesn’t respond to you or take you seriously, get a second opinion.

Trust Your Instincts

If you have concerns about how your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, or moves, talk with your pediatrician. Before you go to the appointment, complete a free developmental milestone checklist, and read these tips about "How to Talk with the Doctor." Remember, you know your child best and your concerns are important. Together, you and your pediatrician will find the best way to help your child. If you're uneasy about the doctor's advice, seek a second opinion. Don't wait. Acting early can make a big difference!

How CO Can Build Up In a Boat Back drafting can cause CO to build up inside the cabin, cockpit, and bridge when a boat is operated at a high bow angle, is improperly or heavily loaded, or has an opening that draws in exhaust.

Larger boats, such as houseboats, sometimes have generators that vent toward the rear of the boat. This venting poses a danger of CO poisoning to people on the rear swim deck or water platform. On larger boats CO builds up above the water near the water platform. CO that builds up in the air space beneath the stern deck or on and near the swim deck can kill someone in seconds.

Traveling at slow speeds or idling in the water can cause CO to build up in a boat’s cabin, cockpit, bridge, and aft deck, or in an open area. Wind from the aft section of the boat can increase this buildup of CO. Symptoms of CO Poisoning The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. High levels of CO inhalation can cause death. • Install and maintain a working CO detector listed by Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) as appropriate for marine use inside the boat to alert people when dangerous levels of CO have built up inside the boat cabin.

• Properly install and maintain all fuel-burning engines and appliances.

• Educate all passengers about the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning.

• Swim and play away from areas where engines vent their exhaust.

• Watch children closely when they play on rear swim decks or water platforms.

• Never block exhaust outlets. Blocking outlets can cause CO to build up in the cabin and cockpit areas–even when hatches, windows, portholes, and doors are closed.

If you think a person on your boat has CO poisoning move him or her to fresh air right away and contact the nearest emergency services.
