Pixie Tips: #1 Limpieza de Closet ¡Es hora de hacer limpieza y organizar el closet de tu peque! Es el momento perfecto de sacar cualquier cosa que ya no le quede o no use y de sacar aquellas cosas que a lo mejor hasta te olvidaste que tenía. Haz lo mismo con materiales escolares, libros y mochilas. Al hacer esto, podrás comenzar a hacer tu lista de compras para empezar el año escolar. Cualquier cosa que no necesites regálalo a alguna organización ya que otros niños pueden sacarle provecho. #5 Agenda de Tareas Decide cómo vas a trabajar con tu peque el tema de sus tareas. Escoge el momento del día que le vas a dedicar a terminar las tareas, si antes o después de la cena. Trata de siempre cumplir el mismo horario y ser consistente. Crea un espacio agradable para hacer las tareas en la casa donde tu peque pueda encontrar todo lo que necesite para terminar las tareas. #6 ¡Sueña en Grande!

Trabaja con tu peque y establece las metas que quieren cumplir este año escolar. Escribe estas metas en un lugar visible donde puedan medir el progreso de lograr estas metas.

Cuando tu peque establece metas y crea un compromiso académico y de actividades extracurriculares se va a sentir más comprometido a cumplirlas. #7 Descansa, Descansa y Descansa!

Ve una película divertida el domingo por la tarde antes de ese lunes de comienzo de clases. Antes de acostarse a dormir leer un cuento sobre el comienzo de clases con tu peque. Recomendamos un libro llamado First Day Jitters escrito por Julie Danneberg. Es importante que tu peque duerma bien la noche antes. Trata de dejar todo listo el día antes para no estar corriendo la mañana siguiente. #8 Comunicación Habla con tu peque. Muéstrale los aspectos positivos de comenzar las clases. Hablen acerca de sus sentimientos de emoción, nervios o frustraciones. Es muy importante motivar a tu peque a que sea honesto y que pueda expresar cualquier sentimiento negativo o de frustración que pueda tener antes de comenzar el año.

Haz que cada día de la experiencia escolar de tu peque cuente! Tómale una foto antes de salir en su primer día de clases. Siempre recuérdale que sea auténtico y él mismo. Motívalo a desempeñarse y ser bondadoso y bueno con sus amigos y maestros. ¡Será un año espectacular donde cosas maravillosas se cumplirán!

ummer is almost over and it’s that exciting time of the year again: back to school. An opportunity to start from scratch and have a wonderful school year. Make sure to start fresh with a clean slate by following these tips and tricks and make 2018-2019 school year a memorable one.

Pixie Back-to-School Tips: #1 Keep vs. Toss: It’s time to declutter! Organize your children’s closet.

It’s the perfect time to toss anything they don’t use anymore and start wearing those things you had forgotten you even had. Do the same with school supplies, notebooks and bags. Then you will be ready to make that back-toschool shopping list. Anything they don’t need make sure to give away; a great place to donate in Miami can be Chapman Partnership and Miami Bridge.

These organizations prepare school supplies for homeless children and youth at risk. #2 Give Back: Check out opportunities to have your child give back in some way this year at their school, local community center, or an online organization. There are so many ways to give back, whether it’s donating to a food drive, or volunteering your time at an after-school program. #3 Teacher Gift: Start off the year with a little gift for your teacher. This will make her feel special right from the get-go. It can be something as simple as a box of sharpies or a note written by your child. Teachers love things they can use in class. #4 Post Schedule: Discuss this school year’s schedule with your child and place it in a visible area in the house. Include homework time, extracurricular activities and free time (including screen time). Discuss with your child what activities they would like to be included in the schedule this year. #5 Homework Planner: Decide how to handle homework time. Pick a time in the day when it will occur (right after school or before dinner time) and try to stay consistent. Set up a homework station where your children can find all the needed supplies to complete their homework. #6 Dream Big!: Work with your kid on setting goals for this new school year. Write them down in a visible place where you can track and record the progress of achieving such goals. When you expect your children to be committed, stay on top of their school assignments, and balance schoolwork with extracurricular activities; they will rise to the occasion. #7 Rest Up & Wind Down!: Watch a funny movie on Sunday afternoon before that Monday to wind down. Before bedtime, read an inspiring story about back to school with your child. A great book is First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. Get a good night’s sleep and have everything prepared the day before. #8 Communication: Talk to your child. Point out the positive aspects of starting school. Talk about their feelings of excitement, first day jitters, anxiety, or frustrations. It is important to encourage your child to be honest and address any negative feelings they may have about starting a new school year.

Make your kids’ days at school count! Take a great photo before heading out to school on the first day and always remind them to be themselves. Encourage them to work hard and be kind, for amazing things are waiting to happen to them this school year.

“La seguridad en las escuelas es nuestra mayor preocupación”: Jefe de Policía López

El Jefe Edwin López ha estado con el sistema de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade por más de 20 años. El mes pasado se juramentó como el primer jefe de policía hispano del departamento.

n ex maestro de Educación Física antes de comenzar a ejercer la ley, quien ascendió hasta convertirse en Jefe de Policía", es una descripción que encaja perfectamente con el Jefe Edwin López y su profesionalismo y compromiso con el Departamento de Policía de las Escuelas de Miami-Dade. (MDSPD) a lo largo de los años, lo que lo llevó a ser el primer hispano en ocupar el puesto.

"Comencé como profesor en la escuela primaria. Lo hice durante un par de años y luego quise tener un mayor impacto positivo en la educación de los niños ", dijo el Jefe López. "Mientras estuve allí, me di cuenta de que los niños tenían una visión negativa e incluso temían a la policía". Quería cambiar esa imagen para construir una relación más fuerte entre nosotros, porque al final del día, los niños son quienes nos brindan información para ayudar a prevenir el crimen. Eso fue lo que realmente me motivó a pasar de ser maestro de escuela a oficial de policía".

Según Alberto Carvalho, Superintendente de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade, él es el hombre adecuado para el trabajo. Carvalho mostró su apoyo al nuevo jefe López en su cuenta de Twitter y publicó: "El es un Jefe educador que viste su uniforme con orgullo, integridad y dignidad. El siguió un llamado para no solo inspirar, sino también servir y proteger".

Ser un educador es precisamente su ventaja para dirigir el departamento. El haber sido maestro de escuela le permite al Jefe López conocer su trabajo desde ambas perspectivas, y así tener una fluida colaboración con los directores de las escuelas y con los oficiales de policía bajo su mando. Actualmente está a cargo de 200 oficiales y aproximadamente 1,000 guardias de seguridad.

López, quien se desempeñó como jefe interino desde abril, reemplaza al ex jefe

Ian Moffet, quien fue transferido al puesto de Jefe de Seguridad Escolar y Oficial de Cumplimiento. Este cambio de personal es en respuesta a la matanza de Marjory Stoneman Douglas School que cobró la vida de 17 estudiantes y profesores en febrero.

El tiroteo en Parkland generó una ley estatal de seguridad pública que requiere que todas las escuelas públicas tengan oficiales juramentados en las escuelas, un requisito bajo un proyecto de ley que el gobernador Rick Scott promulgó en marzo pasado.

"Tendremos al menos un oficial de recursos escolares por primera vez en la historia del distrito a partir del año escolar 2018-2019. Usualmente tenemos oficiales juramentados en las escuelas secundarias (escuelas intermedias y preparatorias), pero ahora también tendremos oficiales en escuelas primarias y centros K8, asegurando más seguridad en todo el distrito ", dijo López.

MDSPD continuará inscribiendo oficiales para cumplir con la nueva legislación. Actualmente hay 360 escuelas y el objetivo es tener más de 360 oficiales jurados disponibles para ayudar a las escuelas. "El Superintendente Carvalho nos ha dado todo el apoyo para asegurar que tendremos todos los recursos posibles y poder juramentar a todos los nuevos oficiales que necesitamos", explicó el Jefe López.

El Departamento también está pidiendo a los agentes de policía retirados que vuelvan al trabajo. El pasado mes de julio se juramentaron 20 oficiales, la mayoría de ellos oficiales retirados que anteriormente prestaban servicio en otras agencias. "Los oficiales retirados son muy importantes para nosotros porque tienen experiencia y capacitación, por lo tanto, están listos para el servicio activo. Mientras que la capacitación para nuevas incorporaciones puede durar de 3 a 5 meses “, agregó López.

Chief Edwin Lopez has been with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system for more than 20 years. Last month he was sworn in as the department’s first Hispanic police chief.

former physical education teacher prior to his start in law enforcement, who worked his way up the ranks to chief of police,” is a description that perfectly fits Chief Edwin Lopez’s professionalism and commitment to the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (MDSPD) over the years, which led him to be the first Hispanic to hold the position.

“I started as a teacher in elementary school.

I did that for a couple of years and then I wanted to have a greater positive impact on the children’s education,” said Chief Lopez.

“While being there, I realized that children had a negative view of and even were afraid of the police. I wanted to change that image in order to build a stronger relationship between us because, at the end of the day, children are the ones who give us information to help prevent crime. That was what really motivated me to move from being a school teacher to a police officer.”

According to Alberto Carvalho, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, he is the right man for the job. Carvalho showed his support for the newly appointed Chief Lopez on his Twitter account and posted, “He is an educator’s chief and wears his uniform with pride, integrity and dignity. He followed a calling to not only inspire but to also serve and protect.”

Being an educator is his precise advantage to lead the department. Having been a school teacher allows Chief Lopez to know his work from both perspectives and thus have a fluid relationship and collaboration with the schools’ principals and with the police officers under his command. He is currently in charge of 200 officers and approximately a thousand security guards.

Lopez, who had served as interim chief since April, replaces former Chief Ian Moffet, who was moved to the role of Chief School Safety and Compliance Officer. The shift in personnel is in response to the Marjory Stoneman “

Douglas School shooting massacre that killed 17 students and teachers in February.

The Parkland shooting sparked a statewide public safety act that requires every public school to have sworn officers at all schools, a requirement under a gun bill that Governor Rick Scott signed into law last March.

“We will have at least one school resource officer for the first time in the district’s history, starting with the 2018-2019 school year. We usually have sworn officers in secondary schools (middle schools and high schools), but now we will have officers in elementary schools and K-8 centers as well, ensuring more security in the entire district,” said Lopez.

MDSPD will continue to enroll officers to comply with the new legislation. There are cu-

rrently 360 schools in the district and the goal is to have more than 360 sworn officers available to assist schools. “Superintendent Carvalho has given us all the support to ensure that we will have all the possible resources and be able to swear in all the new officers we need,” explained Chief Lopez.

The department is also asking for retired police officers to come back to work. Last July, 20 officers were sworn in, most of them retired officers who had previously served in other agencies. “Retired officers are very important to us because they have experience and training; therefore, they are ready for active duty.

Whereas training for newly incorporated officers may last from three to five months,” Lopez added.

Small Changes for Saving this Summer

s the weather heats up, lowering your energy bill can be as simple as making a few small changes around your home.

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) offers top tips to help customers save energy and money like an expert – and beat the heat this summer. “Today, there are more tools than ever that customers can use to understand their energy usage and make changes that can help lower their bills,” said FPL Energy Expert Tiffany SpenceCox. “While some customers who rent apartments or condos may not be able to invest in permanent energy-efficiency improvements, we want them to know there are simple, easy things they can do to save energy and money.”

“You already have control over the top driver of your energy bill – and that’s how you use your A/C. Because it’s hotter in the summer, your A/C runs longer to keep you cool. We recommend cooling your home to 78 degrees, but understand that’s not for everyone. Keep in mind that small changes add up: each degree you raise your thermostat can save you five percent on your monthly cooling costs.”

Quick and easy tips to lower your energy bill Whether you live in an apartment, condo building or in a single-family home, here are some of FPL’s top tips to help you save energy and lower your bill.

• Shade your windows. If you have blinds or shades, keep them closed during the day to reduce how much the sunlight heats your home. Adding curtains can be an inexpensive way to update your décor and keep your space cooler without lowering your A/C. • Switch to LED lights. The next time you (or your landlord) need to replace a light bulb, consider buying LEDs.

They use 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer. Replacing old incandescent bulbs with lightemitting diode (LED) bulbs can save you about $70 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

Keep your A/C filters clean. If you’re able to, we recommend changing or cleaning your filter regularly, usually about once a month. We offer more tips on managing your A/C at FPLblog.com/actips.

Remember to turn off your ceiling fan. Fans cool people, not rooms.

When you leave a room, turn off the fan to save about $7 a month on your bill.

• Consolidate devices using power strips. Certain items in your home, like your TV, computer, cable box or game console, use energy even when switched off. Plug them into a power strip and turn off the entire power strip when not in use, to prevent these “energy phantoms” from increasing your bill.

• Use the FPL Mobile App to monitor your energy use. With the projected bill feature, you can view what your bill will be so you can make changes, if needed, to lower it before it arrives. Get it by texting “APP” to MyFPL (69375).

• Create your personalized energysavings plan. Take the free Online Home Energy Survey (FPL.com/OHES) to create a custom plan to make your home more energy efficient and save up to $300.

its. Pimples. Spots. Whatever you call it, acne can cause discomfort and embarrassment. This skin condition affects most people at some point during their lives. About 4 out of every 5 people experience acne outbreaks between the ages of 11 and 30.

Acne starts in the skin’s oil glands. The hair on our bodies comes out through canals from these glands called follicles. Oil glands make oils that emerge to the skin’s surface through the follicles’ openings, or pores, along with the hairs.

Sometimes hair, oil, and dead skin cells come together to plug a follicle. The plugged pore provides the right conditions for bacteria that normally live on the skin to thrive. When the body’s immune system attacks the bacteria, pain and swelling can result. That’s how a pimple forms.

Doctors don’t know why only some people get acne. They do know what raises the risk for acne.

Increases in certain hormones can cause oil glands to get bigger and make more oil. These hormone levels go up during puberty. Because of this, acne is most common in adolescents and young adults. Hormone changes caused by pregnancy or by starting or stopping birth control pills can also trigger acne.

But people of all ages can get acne. For most, acne goes away by the time they reach their 30s.

However, some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s still get acne. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be upsetting, and severe acne can lead to permanent scarring.

There are things you can do to prevent acne, explains Dr. Edward Cowen, a skin specialist at NIH. He recommends that people with acne avoid skin products that contain petrolatum, a type of oil. Instead, he says, look for creams and lotions labeled “noncomedogenic.” These are less likely to clog pores. A lot of people think certain foods can cause acne breakouts. However, Cowen explains, research has not been able to confirm this in most cases.

While there are plenty of home remedies for acne, Cowen says, it’s better to start with proven over-the-counter treatments for mild acne. These products can contain benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, or sulfur.

People with severe acne should discuss prescription drug options with a doctor, he adds. These include antibiotics to kill bacteria or drugs called retinoids, which can be given as a topical to apply to the skin or as an oral medication.

Wise Choices Fight Acne Flare-Ups

These good habits can help reduce acne:

• Be gentle. Avoid scrubbing hard when washing your face.

Hands off. Resist the temptation to squeeze or pick at pimples.

• Avoid oily skin products. Choose lotions and make-up labeled “noncomedogenic.” These are less likely to clog your pores.

• Wash your hair. If you have oily hair, washing it every day can reduce oil on the skin.

• Loosen up. Avoid pressure from tight-fitting clothing, sports equipment, or backpack straps, which can irritate the skin.

omething unfortunate in my profession is when I have to deal with parties to a divorce where real estate property is involved. After all, one of the last big hurdles before emotional and physical closure, it's the sale of the home and besides children, it's one of the "sticking" points.

It's not just about one party or the other. I have to communicate with both and make sure their best interest is at heart.

I handle husband and wife, absorb it all and still amiable get the job done.

Here are 3 tips for those people unfortunately going through a divorce and having to resolve real estate issues: 1. Make sure your agent is someone you can openly communicate with- Your agent should be able to absorb the information from each party, be kind and courteous and have the professionalism to deal with the attorneys.

Many times, I hear information and I stay neutral understanding each party's situation and concerns, focusing on the main outcome.

2. Make sure it's someone who has a heartJust the same, your agent should understand what the family is going through and connect to each party, having the discretion to know what to do and what to say. Being a family man myself, I can empathize with each party and successfully guide them through the process of selling their home, so they can move on with their life.

3. Make sure it's someone who is a middle man- Usually the husband and wife don't talk to each other and the duties of a transaction broker take over. Make sure you hire an agent who has strong negotiation and people skills and still knows how to deliver the message with heart.
