COFFO - Organización de la Coalición Trabajadores Agrícolas de Florida, por sus siglas en inglés- fue fundada en 1980 exclusivamente con el propósito de mejorar el nivel de vida de los trabajadores agrícolas y de las zonas rurales pobres mediante la administración de programas de ayuda.

“Nosotros administramos programas para ayudar a las personas que vienen a trabajar en agricultura, cubriendo 13 condados en la Florida”, dice Arturo López, Director Ejecutivo.

“Tenemos variedad de programas que van desde la Asistencia para Desastres, Servicios de Inmigración, hasta servicios de Asistencia de Emergencia” agrega.

“Otras organizaciones brindan servicios de vivienda, salud, alimentación, etc., por eso trabajamos con ellos para asegurar que las personas se beneficien de los servicios disponibles y para que no haya duplicación de esfuerzos”, asegura Arturo.

“Nosotros colaboramos con todas las agencias que tienen servicios para inmigrantes. Pero cuando llega un desastre, nuestra organización es la que provee los servicios de emergencia para los trabajadores agrícolas”, afirma María Ávila, Especialista de Alcance en COFFO. De hecho, el Departamento de Oportunidades Económicas de Florida designa a COFFO como la agencia de emergencia para la asistencia de trabajadores agrícolas. "Llevamos a cabo reuniones de coordinación de socorro en casos de desastre, identificación de agencias y fondos de socorro, y brindamos asis-

tencia directa de emergencia a los trabajadores agrícolas afectados por desastres", agrega María.

Otro de los programas bandera de COFFO es la Asistencia de Emergencias. “Es un servicio muy bonito que prestamos a la comunidad. Cuando el trabajador este desempleado o no tiene dinero para pagar su renta o las facturas de servicios públicos, nosotros le damos ayuda financiera para la prevención de desalojo, le brindamos alojamiento temporal de emergencia, transporte, asistencia médica, cupones de comida e incluso alimentos que nos provee la organización Farm Share”, afirma Ávila.

Entre los otros programas que le brindan a la comunidad de trabajadores agrícolas, Arturo destaca el servicio de inmigración que le ayuda a las personas que vienen, por ejemplo, a renovar su permiso de trabajo, o que buscan asesoría para su TPS - Temporary Pro-

COFFO was founded in 1980 to enhance the living and working conditions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Florida.

020 marks the 40th anniversary of COFFO, four decades of continuous support for farmworkers in the state of Florida. COFFO— Coalition of Florida Farmworkers Organization— was founded in 1980 exclusively to improve the standard of living for agriculture workers and rural poor by administering programs that will assist them.

“We administer programs to help farmworkers who come to work in the fields, covering 13 counties in Florida,” says Arturo López, Executive Director. “We have a variety of programs ranging from Disaster Assistance, Immigration Services, to Emergency Assistance Services,” he adds.

The management team is aware that they can’t provide all the services that a farmworker needs because other agencies are offering related programs. “Other organizations provide housing, health, food, etc. We work with them to ensure farmworkers are benefiting from the services available and that duplication is kept to a minimum,” adds Arturo.

“We collaborate with all the other organizations that serve immigrant farmworkers. But when a disaster hits, our organization is the one that provides emergency services for them,” says María Avila, Outreach Specialist at COFFO. In fact, COFFO is designated as the emergency farmworker assistance agency by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunities. “We conduct disaster relief coordination meetings, identification of relief agencies and funds, and provide direct emergency as-

Another of COFFO’s flagship programs is Emergency Assistance. “It is a needed service that we give to the community.

When workers get unemployed or have no money to pay the rent or utility bills, we provide them with financial help for eviction prevention, temporary emergency accommodation, transportation, medical assistance, food stamps, and even food pantry services provided by Farm Share,” says Avila.

Among the other programs offered to the community, Arturo highlights the Immigration Services, helping workers who come, for example, to renew their work permit, or who seek advice for their TPS—Temporary Protective Service. “We also help people who want to become citizens and provide them with citizenship test training and also ESL classes,” he adds.

Actually, ESL classes (English as a Second Language) are part of the vocational training programs COFFO offers, which also includes tax preparation assistance and after-school programs for their K-12 children, covering subjects such as Keeping Children Smart and Safe After School, Positive Youth Development, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Education and Abstinence Education.

“Our offices in Florida City and Immokalee are open to assist all farmworkers, our goal is for them to improve their living conditions. We are a friend they can always count on,” concludes Arturo.

La mayoría de los compradores de vivienda por primera vez, se ven afectados por el precio de compra, los impuestos, y el seguro. Y es que estos siguen subiendo más y más alto. How to Save for Your First Home ome ownership is a dream for people across the globe. Many people save for years before buying their first homes, squirreling away every dollar they can with the hopes they can one day become homeowners.

Most first-time homebuyers are affected by purchase price, taxes and insurance.

They keep going higher and higher. Sometimes it’s better to buy now with a small down payment and to lock in today’s lower interest rates and lock in your homestead exemption, which will cap the rate by which your taxes increase.

But thanks to factors beyond their control, even the most devoted savers can sometimes feel like their dream of home ownership may never come true.

According to the Pew Research Center, American workers’ paychecks are larger than they were 40 years ago, but their purchasing power is essentially the same.

Various challenges can make it difficult to buy a home. However, some simple strategies can help prospective home buyers build their savings as they move closer to the day when they can call themselves “homeowners.”

1. Determine where your money is going. If you’re finding it hard to grow your savings, audit your monthly expenses to determine where your money is going.

Using exclusively debit or credit cards can simplify this process, as all you need to do is log into your accounts and see how your money was spent over a given period.

If you routinely use cash to pay for items, even just to buy coffee on the way to work, keep a notepad handy so you can jot down each expense. Do this for a month and then examine how you spent your money. Chances are you will see various ways to save, and you can then redirect that money into your savings account.

2. Become a savvier grocery shopper.

Another great way to save more money is to alter something you already do each month: grocery shopping. If you haven’t already, sign up for discount clubs at your local grocer. This is a largely effortless way for shoppers, especially those buying food for families, to save considerable amounts of money. Shopping sales at competing grocery stores also can save money.

3. Dine-in more often. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that Americans spend on average 6 percent of their

household budgets on food. However, the USDA also notes that Americans spend 5 percent of their disposable income on dining out. If these figures mirror your spending habits, you can nearly cut your food spending in half by dining out less frequently. That might be a sacrifice for foodies, but it can get you that much closer to buying your own home. (not in South Florida where the average lunch cost per day is around $12 per person which makes it closer to 10% of total income which is spent, not counting date night, etc.)

4. Use tactics like rotating funds, which is you learning how to use credit cards with good rewards instead of allowing the debt to pile on you. Use the same card to pay all the bills you normally pay cash or with your checking; then pay it off early. This way you don’t pay interest and earn points (A side benefit is that credit cards will increase your limits which will give you higher scores and the ability to spend more without affecting your credit ). Saving enough money to purchase your first home is a worthy effort that can be made easier by employing a few budget-friendly strategies.

"Las personas pueden conectarse en línea, pueden hacerlo por teléfono, o pueden solicitar un formulario en papel y enviarlo por correo si lo prefieren. Tenemos que resaltar que en 2020, por primera vez, la Oficina del Censo de EE. UU. aceptará respuestas en línea", dijo Robinson.

Según Robinson, los residentes que no hablan inglés estarán totalmente cubiertos. "El cuestionario en línea está disponible en español, y si la persona elige llamar y completar el censo por teléfono,

contará con el apoyo de agentes bilingües que no solo hablan español sino otros 13 idiomas, incluidos el portugués y el Creole haitiano".

Esta primera etapa se llama operación de auto-respuesta, donde las personas toman el Censo voluntariamente de la manera descrita anteriormente, y va del 12 de marzo al 30 de abril. Luego, del 13 de mayo al 31 de julio, la operación de seguimiento de no respuesta tomará lugar, y los encuestadores del Censo comenzarán a visitar hogares que no han respondido al Censo 2020 para ayudar a asegurar que todos sean contados.

When completing the Census, you should count everyone who is living in your household as of April 1, 2020. very ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide count to determine the number of people living in the United States.

Data from the census provides the basis for distributing billions of dollars in federal funds annually to communities across the country to support vital programs to cities like Homestead.

“The funds that Florida gets every year are used by the state, by counties and by cities like Homestead for programs that serve the community. For instance, education, housing, health care, employment or infrastructure projects that are crucial to the city,” said Andrea Robinson, Media Partnership Specialist from the U.S. Census Bureau Atlanta Regional Office.

From March 12-20, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census.

“People can go online, they can do it over the phone, or they can request a paper form and mail it if they prefer. We have to highlight that in 2020, for the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau will accept responses online,” said Robinson.

According to Robinson, residents that don’t speak English are going to be fully covered. “The online questionnaire is available in Spanish, and if the person chooses to call in and fill the census over the phone, they will be supported by bilingual agents that speak not only Spanish but also 13

other languages including Portuguese and Haitian Creole.”

This first stage is called the “self-response operation” in which people take the census voluntarily in the ways described above, and it goes from March 12 to April 30. Then, from May 13 to July 31, the “non-response follow-up operation” will take place, and census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.

One of the aspects that worries the community around the Census 2020 is disclosing sensitive information to the government. “Your information with us is confidential; by law we can’t tell anyone—not ICE, IRS or DHS, not the president, the governor, the major, nobody,” Robinson added.

In fact, census employees take a lifelong pledge of confidentiality to handle data responsibly and keep respondents’ information private. The penalty for wrongful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.

“People have to be aware that if they don’t respond to the census, that community [Homestead] will stop receiving thousands of dollars for the next ten years, which eventually will affect their daily lives. If they are not counted, that money will not go for that specific neighborhood; it is going to go somewhere else,” she concluded.

"Este evento brindará a más de 200 mujeres las herramientas y los recursos necesarios para empoderarse y, a través del poder del servicio, impactar a otros en sus comunidades", dijo Mercy Hernández, cofundadora de The EDGE. The Early Development of Global Education (The EDGE) es una organización sin fines de lucro con una misión que empezó en el 2007 para empoderar a las mujeres y jóvenes, al tiempo que brindaba servicios humanitarios a niños victimizados y desfavorecidos.

La fundación benéfica The EDGE hasta la fecha ha impactado a más de 30,000 niños en todo el mundo, con un enfoque significativo en la comunidad del sur de Florida. “Hemos ayudado a niños en África, India, América Latina y el Caribe.

Queen Bees participa en eventos mensuales que los equipan y enriquecen con habilidades para la vida y los negocios.

Uno de sus eventos este año será la 3ra Conferencia Anual, bajo el lema IMPACTO. Tendrá lugar el sábado 4 de abril de 9 a.m. a 2 p.m. en el Renaissance Ballroom (ubicado en 5910 S.W.8th Street, Miami, FL. 33144).

"Nuestro objetivo es impactar e inspirar a las mujeres con herramientas prácticas, que las ayudarán a encontrar su propósito, servir a sus comunidades y conectarse con otras mujeres influyentes en el sur de Florida", mencionó Juana Martínez, directora ejecutiva de Queen Bees.

"Vamos a tener cinco oradores sobre temas como liderazgo, equilibrio trabajo

/ vida, empoderamiento de las mujeres, salud de los senos y medicina preventiva", agregó. Durante los descansos de la mañana, los asistentes tendrán el placer de disfrutar de sesiones de yoga y meditación, baile de samba y otros actos de entretenimiento de los miembros de Queen Bee. Según Mercy Hernández, el programa Queen Bees ha tenido un enorme éxito y, por lo tanto, se ha expandido a nivel internacional.

"El año pasado abrimos oficinas en Tennessee y Nueva York, y ahora estamos abriendo puertas internacionalmente para que las Queen Bees que desean influir en sus comunidades puedan tener un impacto de clase mundial".

Los boletos para el evento cuestan $97 para adultos y $75 para los asistentes menores de 25 años. Lo recaudado será donado a la Fundación Benéfica The EDGE. "Por cada $125 recaudados, cinco niños se verán directamente afectados por el apoyo que reciben a través de la fundación", concluyó Mercy Hernández.

Come to the 3rd Annual Queen Bees conference in Miami and join over 200 women who get together to learn while discovering their inner power. n April 4th, the EDGE Charitable Foundation will host its 3rd Annual Queen Bees Conference.

“This event will give more than 200 women the necessary tools and resources to empower themselves, and through the power of service, impact others in their communities,” said Mercy Hernandez, co-founder of EDGE. The Early Development of Global Education (EDGE) is a non-profit with a mission that began in 2007, to empower women and youth while providing humanitarian services to victimized and disadvantaged children.

The EDGE Charitable Foundation to date has impacted more than 30,000 children worldwide, with a significant focus in the South Florida community. “We have helped children in Africa, India, Latin America and the Caribbean. Our goal is to help victimized children either locally or internationally, assisting them through our programs,” added Mercy.

Among the programs they offer is the Queen Bees movement, which aims to empower and unite women through camaraderie, networking, inspiration, education, wellness activities, and constant civic innovation. Queen Bees participate in monthly events that equip and enrich them with life and business skills.

One of their events this year will be the 3rd Annual Conference, under the slogan IMPACT. It will take place on Saturday, April 4th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Renaissance Ballroom (located at 5910 S.W. 8th Street, Miami, FL. 33144).

“Our goal is to impact and inspire women with practical tools, which will help them find their purpose, serve their communities and connect to other influential women in South Florida,” mentioned Juana Martinez, Queen Bees’ Executive Director.

“We’re going to have five speakers on topics such as leadership, work/life balance, empowering women, breast health,

and preventative medicine,” she added.

During the morning breaks, attendees will have the pleasure to enjoy yoga and meditation sessions, samba dancing, and other entertainment acts by Queen Bee Members.

According to Mercy Hernandez, the Queen Bees program has had enormous success and thus is expanding at an international level. “Last year we opened offices in Tennessee and New York, and now we are opening doors internationally so that Queen Bees who wish to influence their communities can do it at a worldclass level.”

Tickets for the event are $97 for general admission and $75 for students 25 and under. Proceeds will be donated back to the EDGE Charitable Foundation. “For every $125 raised, five children will be directly impacted by the support they receive through the foundation,” concluded Mercy Hernandez.

For many South Miami locals, specifically in the Homestead and Cutler Bay area, searching for new, exotic ales usually takes them on a long drive up to Wynwood; one of Miami’s most popular hotspots and tourist attractions.

The owners of Exit One Taproom located in Florida City have partnered with the restaurant Tacos and Tattoos to deliver a similar experience to the South Dade community. “We’re very passionate about craft beer, and we’ve had many opportunities to travel and experience these festivals outside of Florida City,” said Exit One coowner, Breezy Leza. “So we decided as a team, to bring this new idea to Florida City and it was very welcomed.”

Hoping to bring a Wynwood-like event, the festival will include over 20 different Florida brewing companies showcasing their best beverages, as well providing the community with a fun, innovative experience.

The function will also have activities such as a car show, live art demonstrations, hookah lounge and vendor’s village. Guests can also expect live musical performances by local artists Raising Cadence, Yamokah, Banda Kaliente and more.

“We decided as a whole to always involve our local artists and our musicians,” said Leza. “We want to provide a platform for them to express their interests and their talents, and we figured that Exit One and the festival would be the best place.”

And what is a festival without including a variety of delicious food options? Tacos and Tattoos will be serving its unique style of cuisine, offering a traditional Mexican fusion with a Caribbean comfort experience.

“Everything we do is hand crafted, and we

make really good food from abuela’s recipes to my father’s travels” said Jay Cruz, head of logistics and operations at Tacos and Tattoos. “It’s a unique style of dining that kind of forces you to touch all five senses.”

After hosting the successful Craft Beer Not Crap Beer festival last year, the two businesses want to expand on the idea of bringing the community together for something that normally isn’t held below the Kendall area on an annual basis.

With their ambitious drive and the help of production company Circle of Trust Entertainment (COT), they are getting closer to realizing that mission.

“The purpose of this event is to have a good time,” said Arnaldo Felix, a representative of COT Entertainment. “We’re going to break expectations, surpass expectations, and we will be waiting.”
