Cuando el verano te da limones, haz limonada...

Arranca tu verano con algo dulce y fresco: Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos (ABP)

E

Puesto de Limonada:

ste verano comienza por fomentar el crecimiento y el desarrollo mental de tu pequeño por medio del aprendizaje basado en proyectos (ABP).

Planificar actividades de verano para tus peques no debería ser desafiante. Es por esto que ABP le presenta a niños situaciones del mundo real y los ayuda a encontrar soluciones por medio de investigación y exploración, trabajando así las diferentes áreas del desarrollo del niño utilizando proyectos de largo plazo. El truco está en encontrar algo que apasione a tu peque.

Si encuentras algo que despierte su interés entonces habrás encontrado la oportunidad perfecta para que ellos aprendan por medio del juego en un proyecto especial durante este verano.

El verano ha comenzado y con él llegó la oportunidad de poder disfrutar de una deliciosa limonada! El proyecto del puesto de limonada no es solamente adorable y divertido, también es una manera perfecta de enseñarle a nuestros niños conceptos y lecciones importantes de vida.

Sigue estos pasos y diviértete este verano mientras tu pequeño aprende y desarrolla las cuatro áreas del desarrollo del niño de una manera lúdica y divertida!

DIA 1: Tormenta de Ideas!

Haz un plan estratégico y comienza a pensar en: tema, receta, ingredientes, precios, productos de venta, decoraciones, locación, fecha de evento etc… Hoy se trata de puras ideas! Puedes proponer ideas como sabores de limonada, limonada de kiwi, limonada de frambuesas o hasta limonada de hierbabuena. Comienza a hacer tu lista de quehaceres y a recolectar cosas de tu casa que vayas a usar (jarra, vasos, colores, pegamento, tijeras y decoraciones)

DIA 2: Construye tu puesto de limonada Manos a la obra! Hoy puedes enfocarte en desarrollar las habilidades motoras de tu peque al construir y hacer tu propio puesto de limonada. Armarlo puede ser muy fácil!

Puedes comprar algún puesto pre hecho en cartulina o puedes utilizar una pequeña mesa o escritorio y reformarlo. Deja que tu peque haga diferentes diseños y que decore el puesto a su manera. Pueden utilizar marcadores, tijeras, cartulinas, escarcha y hasta pintura para decorar el puesto. Las pizarras también son un buen recurso para escribir los nombres y precios de la variedad de limonadas que se ofrezcan!

DIA 3: Recetas para la limonada El día de hoy podrás trabajar en desarrollar el área del lenguaje al seleccionar tus recetas favoritas y enumerar los diferentes ingredientes que serán utilizados en cada receta.

Crea una lista de compras y ve con tu peque al supermercado para comprar los ingredientes. Esta lista la pueden escribir en casa paso por paso. Recuerda que al escribir cada palabra, puedes pronunciar cada letra para que el proceso de escritura sea más fácil y fluya mejor. Asegúrate de que hayan aprendido a hacer cada uno de los pasos de las recetas antes de comenzar! Siempre es buena idea probar el producto, en este caso la limonada, antes de ofrecerle al público.

DIA 4: Desarrollando el plan de acción Hoy trabajarás con el desarrollo cognitivo y las habilidades matemáticas de tu peque. Haz un repaso de sus habilidades matemáticas de acuerdo a su edad (suma, resta, división) y comiencen por seleccionar los precios de los productos que ofrecerán al público. Pueden practi-

car conceptos matemáticos más avanzados como fracciones y gráficos. Esta también es una buena oportunidad para enseñarle a tu peque sobre lo que significa vender, emprender y tener habilidades financieras para el futuro. Pueden hablar sobre el precio de venta y las ganancias que obtendrán en total.

También, pueden crear su propia caja registradora donde podrán hablar sobre el buen manejo del dinero. No es necesario utilizar dinero real, también pueden diseñar su propia moneda y utilizar dinero “de mentira” para el día de la venta.

Esto todo dependerá de la edad de tu pequeño y sus capacidades.

DIA 5: La comunicación es clave!

Los últimos pasos de tu proyecto del puesto de limonada ayudará con el desarrollo socio emocional de tu peque al enseñarles cómo comunicarse de manera correcta con los demás utilizando buenos modales y valores. Puedes comenzar a utilizar el juego dramático como herramienta y comenzar a jugar diferentes roles como el vendedor y el cliente.

Pueden turnarse y de esta manera tu peque aprenderá a cómo manejar situaciones de acuerdo a su rol. Esta es la oportunidad perfecta para hablar sobre los buenos modales y cómo ser vendedor respetuoso y exitoso. Utilizar frases como: gracias, por favor, buenos días, que tenga un buen día, son todas partes de la experiencia y herramientas que ayudarán a desarrollar su crecimiento socio emocional. Aprovecha esta oportunidad para enseñarles la importancia de sonreir!!

DIA 6: Devolver a nuestra comunidad Recuérdale a tu peque la importancia de siempre dar a los demás y de ayudar a las comunidades que necesiten apoyo. En esta oportunidad, puedes hablarle sobre cómo apartar un porcentaje de las ventas para ayudar a alguna organización que lo necesite. Ayuda a tu peque a crear un cartelón que le muestre a los compradores la organización con la que estarían contribuyendo al comprar sus limonadas. Al finalizar las ventas, puedes llevar a tu peque a la organización y entregar el donativo personalmente.

DIA 7: El gran día!

Finalmente llegó el gran día! Envía las invitaciones y organiza una cita de juegos con los amigos de tu peque. Invita a familia y amigos para que disfruten de la mejor limonada que van a probar este verano!

Toma muchas fotos y videos para documentar tu proyecto. Recuerda que puedes cambiar el tema del proyecto a cualquier tema que sea de interés para tu peque. Desde floristería, bombonería o hasta un show de títeres se pueden hacer como proyecto para el verano. Deja volar la imaginación de tu peque para que así encuentre un proyecto que realmente lo inspire.

Una de los beneficios más importantes del aprendizaje basado en proyectos es pasar mucho tiempo especial y familiar durante el verano, creando así recuerdos que durarán toda una vida.

Kickoff This Summer with Something Fresh and Sweet: Project-Based Learning (PBL) Lemonade Stand

tart the summer by building a dynamic mindset with your little one through project-based learning (PBL). Planning educational summer activities for your kids should not be burdensome. Thus, PBL offers kids real-world situations and helps them find solutions through inquiry and exploration, while simultaneously working on different areas of development through a long-term project. The trick is finding something your child is passionate about then running with it. Discover something that sparks their interests, and you will find an amazing opportunity for them to learn through engagement with a special summer project.

Symbolically, summer has not begun until you’ve had a lemonade on the street, and we all know our kids are the ones who make it sweet.

Not only are lemonade stands adorable and fun, but they are also a great way to teach kids about many important life skills and lessons. Follow these simple steps to have a fun summer learning experience while initiating all four areas of development.

DAY 1: Brainstorm Make a strategic plan by beginning to think about the following: theme, recipe, ingredients, prices, products, decorations, location, and event date. Today is all about ideas. You can talk about having different lemonade recipes such as kiwi lemonade, raspberry lemonade or even a fancy type like lemongrass lemonade. Start by creating a duty list and collecting things around the house to be used (jars, cups, colors, glue, scissors, decorations).

DAY 2: Build a lemonade stand Today you will work on developing gross and fine motor skills by forming your own lemonade stand. Building it can be very simple. You can purchase a prefabricated cardboard stand or you can build your own out of an old nightstand or small table. Let your kids make different designs and decorate as they wish. They can use colors, scissors, markers and even paint to decorate their lemonade stand. Chalkboards are also a great way to post prices and decorate your stand. For summer 2017, we are loving flag banners and polka-dot straws.

DAY 3: Choose a recipe for lemonade Today you will work on language development by selecting your favorite recipe and listing the different ingredients to be used. Create a shopping list; then take your kids grocery shopping.

Back at home, have your children write the recipe step by step. Remember to help them spell each word by sounding out the letters. Make sure they’ve mastered the steps before you begin the

preparations. And to ensure maximum quality, it’s always a good idea to test out your recipe before selling it to the public.

DAY 4:Building your lemonade business plan Today you will work on your kids’ cognitive development and math skills. Review with your little ones their math skills and select selling prices for your products. You may practice more complex math concepts like fractions, divisions, graphics, etc. This is also a great time to teach your kids about sales, entrepreneurship skills and financial terms. Talk about profits and your selling price.

Create your own cash register and remember to have some change handy just in case. If you do not want to use real money, you can design your bills to use as “pretend money” the day of the sale.

DAY 5: Communication is key The last steps of your lemonade stand project will help your kids develop socially and emotionally by teaching them communication skills.

Have your child dress up and use a cute apron.

Today you will practice role-playing with your kids as salespersons and customers, and you can take turns and switch roles. This is the perfect opportunity to discuss manners and how to be a successful and respectful salesperson. Using polite

phrases such as “thank you,” “please,” “good afternoon,” “have a great day” are all part of the learning experience. Take this opportunity to teach them how smiling is always key.

DAY 6:Giving back to your community Remind your young apprentices how important it is to always give back to their community and talk to them about designating a percentage of what they will make to a charity or community organization. Have them create a poster that will show buyers which community organization they have selected while bringing awareness to their customers.

DAY 7: The big day Finally, the big day is here. Send out invitations and make a kids’ playdate out of this important day. Invite family and friends over and have them enjoy the best lemonade they’ll have this summer! Take tons of pictures and videos to document your PBL. Remember: you can always change this PBL to a flower shop, candy shop, puppet show, bakery or anything that inspires your little ones.

Ultimately, one of the most important benefits of a PBL lemonade stand is spending valuable family time together and creating lifelong summer memories.

Pero la celebración más vistosa y entusiasta se vive en la capital del país, Washington, donde se congregan cada año miles de personas para ondear la bandera frente al templo de su democracia: el Capitolio. Familias venidas de todos los estados y turistas extienden sus mantas de “picnic” a lo largo de los tres kilómetros de la explanada que conforma el National Mall para rendir tributo a la patria con el menú oficial de EE. UU: carne a la parrilla, ensalada de papas, mazorcas de maíz, sandías, galletas y cupcakes.

e azul, blanco y rojo se viste el mes de julio porque se celebra la más importante fiesta para los estadounidenses, la independencia. Hace 241 años, el 4 de julio de 1776, desde que las 13 colonias formaron la Declaración de Independencia del Imperio Británico.

Y será durante este mes donde más banderas usted podrá ver adornando las fachadas de las

casas, a lo largo del territorio nacional, y el patriotismo se sentirá con mayor intensidad.

La manera de festejar este día ha variado muy poco desde finales del siglo XVIII: barbacoas, desfiles, “picnic” y fuegos artificiales.

Hoy en día grandes y chicos no solo disfrutan lo tradicional sino sus adhesiones como las playas, las ferias o los patios de sus casas.

Las tradiciones más comunes de este mes: LOS ALMUERZOS, el 4 de Julio se debe celebrar con un buen almuerzo en familia o con amigos, por lo general una parrillada de hamburguesas y perros calientes.

Se estima que en el país se comen al menos 150 millones de perros calientes (hot dogs) durante las celebraciones.

LAS PELÍCULAS, no hay mejor momento para ver películas como el “Día de la Independencia” o “El Patriota” las cuales suelen emitirse y verse durante las celebraciones.

LOS CONCURSOS, se celebran divertidas competiciones y concursos para ver quién come más rápido, por ejemplo, decenas de sandías o quién engulle con más

habilidad perritos calientes.

Desde hace un siglo, Nueva York acoge cada 4 de julio el “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest”: la mayor carrera de consumo de perritos calientes del mundo, televisado y visto por casi 2 millones de personas.

LOS DESFILES, son otra actividad clásica de las fiestas de independencia. En distintas ciudades se organizan coloridos y sonoros desfiles que son seguidos con entusiasmo por los ciudadanos.

FRAUNCES TAVERN, la historia cuenta que George Washington se despidió de su ejército invitándolo a un gran banquete en Fraunces Tavern, que abrió sus puertas en 1762. En la actualidad es un sitio importante para visitar en Nueva York debido a que posee un museo con objetos de la independencia y ofrece comidas y bebidas de la época.

FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES, es la cereza del pastel porque es lo que cierra con broche de oro todas las celebraciones del día. En todas las ciudades de Estados Unidos existe un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales por el día de la independencia. Las opciones: verlos desde el mítico Empire State, en la explanada del Capitolio en Washington o en crucero por Nueva York. Se realizan alrededor de 14 mil fiestas de fuegos artificiales en todo el país.

El 4 de Julio ha sido un día Feriado Federal desde 1941. Aunque eso puede parecer un largo tiempo de espera para que el país celebrara su independencia que se declaró en el año 1776, la tradición del 4 de julio, muchas veces se refiere al día de independencia, como la fecha desde el comienzo de la Revolución Americana y la adopción de la Declaración de Independencia el 4 de julio de 1776.

Desde entonces, el 4 de julio ha sido reconocido como los albores de la independencia

americana, y las celebraciones que incluyen fuegos artificiales y desfiles se remontan al siglo XVIII. El 4 de julio de 1777, la ciudad de Filadelfia, que se convirtió en la primera capital de los Estados Unidos de América, celebró la primera conmemoración anual de la independencia de Estados Unidos, y exactamente un año después George Washington ordenó que se le ofrecieran a todos sus soldados raciones dobles de ron para conmemorar el aniversa-

rio.

En 1781, Massachusetts fue el primer estado que hizo el 4 de julio un feriado oficial del estado, y el día fue declarado un día de fiesta federal por el Congreso de los Estados Unidos en 1870. Sin embargo, esa declaración no concedió vacaciones pagadas a los empleados federales. Ese beneficio llegó en 1941, por lo que ese año es ahora reconocido como el primer año en el que el 4 de julio se convirtió oficialmente en un feriado federal.

And it will be during this month when you can see more flags decorating the front of houses all around the country and when patriotism is more intense.

The way to celebrate this day has varied very little since the end of the 18th century: barbecues, parades, picnics and fireworks.

Nowadays, adults and children not only enjoy the traditional but also enjoy going to the beaches, the fairs or the patios of their houses.

But the most colorful and enthusiastic celebration is found in the capital of the country, Washington D.C., where thousands get together every year to wave the United States’ flag in front of the temple of their democracy: The Capitol. Families from all the states and tou-

rists extend their picnic blankets along the three miles of the esplanade that is the National Mall to pay tribute to the homeland with the official U.S. menu: barbequed meat, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelons, cookies and cupcakes.

The most common traditions of this month: • THE BARBEQUES, July 4 should be celebrated with a good picnic with family or friends, usually barbequing hamburgers and hot dogs. It is estimated that 150 million hot dogs are eaten in the country during the celebration.

• THE MOVIES, there is no better time to watch movies like “1776” or “The Patriot” which are often broadcast and watched during that time.

• THE COMPETITIONS, there are fun competitions and different eating contests to see who is faster in eating dozens of watermelons or more hotdogs. For over a century, New York has hosted the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Con-

test on July 4, the world’s largest hotdog-eating contest, televised and watched by nearly two million people.

• THE PARADES, another classic activity of the Independence Day festivities. In different cities across the country, colorful parades with participating bands are organized and are followed with enthusiasm by citizens.

• THE FRAUNCES TAVERN, the story tells that George Washington bid farewell to his troops by inviting them to a banquet at the Fraunces Tavern, which had opened in 1762.

It is now an important site to visit in New York because it is also a museum with a display of objects from the independence time and offers food and drinks from that period.

• THE FIREWORKS, they are the culmination of the celebrations of the day. In every city around the United States, there are firework displays for Independence Day. The options: to watch them from the New York Empire State Building, from the esplanade of the Capitol in Washington or from a New York cruise. Nearly 14,000 firework displays are held throughout the country.

Did you know?

The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of

American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century.

On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to comme-

morate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870.

However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

El renacimiento del centro de Homestead

uando el centro de la ciudad de Homestead viene a la mente, los ciudadanos locales piensan en un lugar histórico. Y es que la calle principal de Homestead todavía persiste con la reciente reapertura del Teatro Seminole. Al lado del teatro, está Losner Park, adornado con placas conmemorativas para apreciar nuestras tropas militares, y el cual tiene un escenario propicio para realizar eventos de la comunidad; en frente sigue la municipalidad histórica de Homestead, que esconde tesoros del pasado como: archivos de documentos históricos, artefactos de la edad de oro y películas que narran la historia de la ciudad. Al lado de la municipalidad, reside un edificio que alguna vez fue ocupado por el Homestead Sun. Cerca también se encuentran muchos restaurantes auténticos mexicanos, tiendas de antigüedades, pero al mismo tiempo, adyacente hay terrenos urbanos, porque lo local está siendo transformado por una ciudad suburbana.

George Gretsas, Administrador de la ciudad de Homestead, nos comentó que “los centros grandes tienen grandes edificios”. Y construir la nueva municipalidad de Homestead y la nueva cede de la policía es el punto de inicio para revitalizar la ciudad y darle un toque contemporáneo, incluyendo el escenario y los eventos especiales del teatro Seminole. La visión es tener en el centro de la ciudad una mezcla de los edificios históricos junto a edificios con un tema moderno.

El propósito principal de revitalizar el centro de Homestead es aumentar la calidad de vida para los residentes; en vez de manejar hasta la ciudad de Miami, los lugareños pueden disfrutar de las

muchas atracciones que la estación de Homestead les ofrecerá. Dicha estación se compone de 250 mil pies cuadrados en la que el entretenimiento y el transporte se unirán. Sirvirá como un nuevo centro de tranvía que se conectará con la línea del bus Miami-Dade.

También habrá un estacionamiento que será conveniente para los que visiten el centro de la ciudad. En el centro de la estación de Homestead, habrá un lujoso centro de entretenimiento con 10 pantallas de cine, una sala de juegos, un sala para jugar bolos con 14 carriles, tiendas para comprar y un lugares para comer. Al lado de la estación, la ciudad planea construir la primera y única biblioteca cibernética llamada Cybrary.

Esta por supuesto incluirá el uso de tecnología de proyección para presentar un espectáculo sobre historia de libros y lecturas a los visitantes.

En el centro de la biblioteca, habrá un árbol en circuito para dirigir a los visitantes hacia el destino deseado. También tendrá muchas simulaciones de realidad virtual, un tema especial de bus mágico, dándole a los niños la oportunidad de hacer un viaje virtual a través de la historia. La realidad aumentada estará incluida como caracteres de libros en distintos cuentos.

Por su parte Olba Eby, una empresaria venezolana, quién reside en Homestead desde 1998 está muy emocionada con las innovaciones de la ciudad y los planes para el futuro. Como ella dice: “Me encanta la gente que está encargada del proceso de embellecimiento y las personas con una visión para el futuro”. Cada vez que ella pasa por el viejo distrito, se emociona y se siente orgullosa al ver los cambios, como la nueva municipalidad,

la nueva estación de policía y el Teatro Seminole.

Olga también está de acuerdo en cómo los negocios de Homestead se beneficiarán de estos proyectos, ansiosa sobre el turismo que no solamente beneficiará a los negocios locales sino también a los residentes los cuales tendrán un mercado más competitivo.

Según el Sr. Gretsas, los mejoramientos del centro también ayudará a que aumente el valor de las propiedades en toda la ciudad y se espera que cree cientos de nuevos empleos. La estación de Homestead necesitará personal para su funcionamiento, por lo tanto se crearán trabajos a largo plazo.

Además, la ciudad planea reclutar grandes corporaciones para que traigan sus negocios al centro de Homestead. La ciudad cuenta con el apoyo mayoritario de sus ciudadanos para revitalizar el centro de Homestead. En el año 2014, los votantes, se unieron a la visión que tenia la ciudad y unánimemente aprobaron la restauración del teatro Seminole y la construcción de la nueva sede de la policia y otros proyectos bajo construcción.

Homestead's

New Downtown Rises

hen downtown Homestead comes to mind, local citizens think of a historic place. Homestead’s old main street lingers with the recent reopening of the Seminole Theatre. Next to the theater lies Losner Park containing a lofty stage for community events, with commemorative plaques to appreciate our military troops; across the street remains the old Homestead Town Hall, hiding treasures from the past: archives of historical documents, artifacts of Homestead’s golden age, and films that narrate the city’s history.

Next to the Town Hall resides the building that once occupied The Homestead Sun. Nearby stand many authentic Mexican restaurants, and antique shops suggesting an urban village, adjacent to rural terrain as the locale is being transformed into a suburban town.

George Gretsas, City Manager of Homestead, recounted that great downtowns have great buildings.

Constructing the New Homestead City Hall and the new Police Headquarters is the starting point of revamping the city to a contemporary look, including the stage and the floodlit events of the Seminole Theatre. The vision is to have a downtown with a mixture of historic buildings and new ones with modern

themes.

The main purpose of revitalizing downtown Homestead is to increase the quality of life for the residents; instead of commuting to the city of Miami, locals can enjoy the main attractions that Homestead Station will offer.

It comprises 250,000 square feet where entertainment and transportation will merge. It will serve as a new trolley hub and connect to the Miami-Dade Busway, and a parking garage for the visitors to downtown Homestead, making it convenient from the limited parking spaces fronting the buildings.

At the center of the Homestead Station, there will be a lavish entertainment center with 10 movie screens, an arcade room, 14-lane bowling alley, and shopping stores next to dining spots.

Alongside the Homestead Station, the city plans to construct a first-ever cyber library (called Cybrary). It will include the use of digital projection technology to illuminate for arriving guests a show about the history of books and stories about reading. At the very of core of the library will be a circuit tree to direct visitors towards their desired destination. It will have many features of virtual reality simulations, a special theme of a magic school

bus, giving children a virtual trip through history.

Holographic virtual reality is included as characters of books will pop from their respective tales.

Olga Eby a local Venezuelan businesswoman, who has been a Homestead resident since 1998 is excited about the city’s innovations and plans. She stated, “I love people who care about beautification and people with a vision of the future.” Every time she goes through the old district, she gets excited and proud to see changes like the new City Hall, the police station and the Seminole Theatre.

Olga is on board with how businesses of Homestead will benefit from these projects, eager about the potential tourism that will not only benefit local businesses but also the residents of Homestead, who will have a more competitive market place.

According to Mr. Gretsas, the downtown improvements will help boost property values throughout the city and create hundreds of new jobs. Homestead Station will need staff to run it; hence, it will offer sustainable long-term jobs. In addition, the city plans to recruit major corporations to bring their business to the heart of downtown Homestead.

The city has majority support from the public for the revitalization of downtown. Voters in 2014 were in unison with the city’s vision of restoring the Seminole Theatre, and building a new Police Department, and other construction projects.

One of the greatest long-term challenges with projects of this nature is follow-through. The worst thing that can happen in revitalization projects is to leave the job half finished. Fortunately, here in Homestead, we have a united mayor and council willing to take smart risks and see things through to the end according to Mr. Gretsas.

Some of these projects, like the Homestead Station and the Cybrary should be completed by spring and summer of 2018.

Esta temporada de huracanes se espera que sea superior a la media en intensidad de acuerdo con la perspectiva de NOAA. Lo más importante que nuestros residentes pueden hacer es estar preparados y autosuficientes durante las primeras 72 horas, tener listos sus equipos de emergencia y revisar su plan de comunicación de emergencia y familia antes de que llegue una tormenta ", Stephen Taylor, encargado de Emergencia de la ciudad de Homestead.

ablar de huracanes no es nada grato sobre todo cuando los recuerdos que nos trae son bien amargos. Pero vivimos en un Estado donde la temporada se extiende de junio a noviembre cada año. Por tal razón es importante estar más que preparados por si surge una situación de emergencia.

Es importante discutir con su familia un plan en caso de presentarse el desastre. Su familia a lo mejor no este reunida cuando ocurra el desastre, pero es importante saber cómo pueden contactarse unos a otros y si es posible reunirse y lo que deben hacer en caso de una emergencia.

A continuación, le presentamos una guía informativa sobre huracanes que contiene consejos útiles para tener en cuenta antes y después de una emergencia climática.

Antes del huracán En primera instancia se aconseja limpiar los desechos del jardín y domésticos. En el caso de los balcones, remueva todo lo que allí se encuentre.

Recuerde que todos estos objetos pueden convertirse en proyectiles que atenten contra las viviendas y las personas. Para ello se recomienda: - Proteger las ventanas y puertas, preferiblemente con contraventanas permanentes aprobadas por su Condado.

- Llevar al interior de la casa los muebles del patio y todos los demás objetos que no estén amarrados.

- Usar protectores de sobretensiones y fundas impermeables para sus aparatos electrónicos.

- Mantener un galón de agua potable por persona y además se recomienda tener botellas en el congelador para después de la tormenta.

- Recuerde llenar los tanques de gasolina de los

carros que hay en la casa y guardar 5 galones o menos en un lugar fresco, seco y ventilado - Se destaca la necesidad de tener preparado el kit de suministros esenciales antes del comienzo de cualquier emergencia.

Después de un huracán Muchas de las lesiones relacionadas con un huracán se producen tras el paso de éste. Siga estas recomendaciones para estar protegido: • Permanecer dentro de su lugar de refugio hasta que las autoridades locales digan que se puede salir.

Si tiene que salir, esté atento a objetos caídos y cables eléctricos derribados.

• Inspeccionar su casa para ver si se ha producido algún daño y cerciorarse de que no corra peligro al quedarse en ella. Si tiene servicio de gas, fíjese si hay fugas.

• No acercarse a las zonas afectadas ni recorrerlas para ver qué ha pasado.

• Obedecer todos los toques de queda y órdenes de emergencia que se emitan.

• No usar parrillas de carbón, cocinas o fogones de campamento con gas propano o generadores dentro de la casa ni en ningún otro lugar cerrado.

• No acercarse a tendidos eléctricos derribados e informe a FPL sobre ellos.

• Deshacerse de cualquier comida refrigerada que crea que se echó a perder.

Hurricanes are one of nature’s most powerful and destructive events that this nation faces, and they’ve caused eight of the ten most costly disasters in U.S. history. This hurricane season is expected to be above average in intensity according to the NOAA outlook. The most important thing our residents can do is to be prepared and self-sufficient for the first 72 hours have your emergency kits ready and review your emergency and family communication plan before a storm comes.” – Stephen Taylor, Homestead Emergency

o talk about hurricanes is not pleasant, especially when it brings bad memories.

But, we live in a state where the hurricane season runs from June to November every year. For that reason, it is important to be prepared in case an emergency arises.

It is also important to talk with your family about a plan of action in the event of a disaster. Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes; therefore, discuss with them how you can get in contact with each other and if it is possible, how to reunite and what to do in case of an emergency.

Below is a hurricane information guide that contains helpful tips to keep in mind before and after a weather emergency.

Before the Hurricane - First, clean the garden and household of any waste materials. In the case of balconies, remove everything that is placed there. Remember that all objects can turn into projectiles and become hazards to people and homes. The following is recommended: - Protect windows and doors, preferably with your county-approved permanent shutters.

- Bring patio furniture and all other objects that are loose into the interior of the house.

- Use surge protectors and waterproof covers for your electronics.

- Maintain one gallon of drinking water per person and have bottles in the freezer for after the storm.

- Fill up the gasoline tanks of your cars, and store five gallons or less in a cool, dry and ventilated place.

- Have a first-aid kit with essential supplies before any emergency occurs.

After a Hurricane Many of the injuries related to a hurricane sometimes occur after the storm has passed. Follow the recommendations below to protect yourself: • Stay in your shelter until local authorities say you can leave. If you must leave, watch out for fallen objects and downed electrical cables.

• Inspect your home for any damage and make sure it is safe to live in. If you have gas service, check for leaks.

• Do not go to inspect the affected areas to see what happened.

• Obey all curfews and emergency orders that are issued.

• Do not use charcoal grills, kitchens or camp stoves with propane gas or generators inside the house or anywhere else.

• Do not approach downed electric lines, and report them to Florida Power & Light.

• Get rid of any refrigerated food that you may think is spoiled.

Visit www.miamidade.gov or call 3-1-1 to get an update of your County’s services. Weather conditions can affect bus and train services, garbage collection, as well as airport and port operations.

ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES 1. Put your personal documents in an airtight, waterproof plastic bag.

2. Have at least five gallons of bottled water and non-perishable, packaged or canned food supply for seven days.

3. Non-electric can opener.

4. First-aid kit and any medicine that a person takes.

5. Batteries for a radio or electric converter.

6. Flashlights and batteries.

7. Special articles for babies, the elderly or disabled.

8. Charged cell phones, extra batteries, cables for wall and car charging, and a land telephone.

9. Fill up your car’s gas tank 10. Bedding.

11. Articles of personal hygiene.

12. Extra clothing.

13. List of telephone contacts and other useful numbers.

Hurricanes that have landed in an area of the Florida peninsula and have made history: 1. Hurricane Andrew, August 24, 1992. Category 5 It struck the Bahamas, Homestead, and the southern area of Miami-Dade County and the southwest region of Louisiana. It left 15 people dead, 90,000 without homes and $34 billion in damages.

7. Hurricane Opal, October 4, 1995. Category 3.

It touched down on Pensacola Beach and hit the Florida Panhandle, then passed through Alabama and southeast Tennessee. It left 1 person dead and $1.2 billion in damages.

8. The Hurricane of San Felipe-Okeechobee, September 16, 1928. Category 4.

It touched land near Palm Beach and crossed Lake Okeechobee, where floods destroyed agricultural land and the surrounding homes. It left 2,500 people dead and $321 million in damages.
