Hospitales promueven estilo de

ay que predicar con el ejemplo”, dice un conocido refrán. Y ese es precisamente el desafío que están tomando algunos hospitales en el país en cuanto a cambiar los hábitos alimenticios en sus menús. Homestead Hospital ha puesto en práctica esta iniciativa.

Las papas y guisantes congelados, las bebidas azucaradas, melocotones enlatados en almíbar y gelatinas de caja parecen estar llegando a su fin en un creciente número de hospitales en Estados Unidos.

La preocupación por establecer un ejemplo saludable y el deseo de hacer que los alimentos hospitalarios sean más nutritivos y apetitosos, es una idea que ha conquistado el pensamiento de algunos y está despertando la conciencia de otros.

Es así como unos han tomado pequeños pasos y han logrado eliminar las grasas trans de sus menús y cambiar a productos lácteos libres de hormonas. Mientras tanto, otros han asumido retos mayores al incursionar en el cultivo de sus propios vegetales de manera orgánica.

El concepto de que el hospital tenga su propia huerta ha venido a ser todo un reto para estas instituciones donde su campo de acción no es la agricultura. Pero lo han hecho

como respuesta a una tendencia hacia prácticas alimenticias más saludables.

"Numerosos estudios demuestran que las frutas y verduras orgánicas ofrecen muchas ventajas sobre los alimentos cultivados convencionalmente, tales como: mayores cantidades de vitaminas, minerales, ácidos grasos esenciales y antioxidantes, que reducen la incidencia de enfermedades cardíacas y algunos cánceres, y un riesgo reducido de enfermedades comunes como cáncer, enfermedades del corazón, alergias e hiperactividad en los niños ", manifestó Bonnie Coyle, MD, MS, y Directora de Salud Comunitaria en St. Luke's University Health Network.

Hasta el momento 250 hospitales en todo el país han firmado un compromiso, promovido por Health Care Without Harm, para servir más frutas y verduras frescas y renunciar a alimentos altamente procesados. Por supuesto estos hospitales constituyen una minoría entre los más de 7,500 en los Estados Unidos.

A la vanguardia En Miami es el Hospital de Homestead quien asumió el reto de predicar con el ejemplo y esto lo llevó a abrir, desde hace 3 años, su propia huerta orgánica ubicada al lado de la institución. Su objetivo, tener un impacto

de largo alcance al ofrecer a la comunidad alimentos frescos y nutritivos.

La huerta, con tres acres de terreno, tiene zanahorias, rábanos, lechuga, col rizada, tomates, judías verdes, pepinos, calabaza, remolacha, acelga, sandía, quimbombó, menta, romero, albahaca, limoncillo, pimientos, plátanos, mango, guanábana, fruta de estrella, guisantes ojo negro, y más.

Asimismo, se utiliza para educar a la comunidad a través demostraciones de cocina, ferias de salud, talleres de bienestar y grupos de apoyo.

Como parte del programa Grow Your Lunch del hospital más de 2.500 estudiantes han recorrido la huerta. La idea de estas excursiones escolares es enseñarles a sembrar semillas, cosechar frutas y vegetales, y cocinar su propio almuerzo bajo la guía del director del huerto.

No obstante, todo lo que se ha logrado hasta ahora, es solamente una porción de los planes que tienen con este proyecto. Según nos comentó la Gerente de la huerta Thi Squire, esperan hacer uso de los 10 acres restantes para cultivar productos no solo para el Hospital de Homestead sino también para todos los demás hospitales dentro del sistema Baptist Health.

ou have to preach by example” is a familiar saying. This is precisely the challenge that some hospitals are taking to change the eating habits in their communities. Homestead Hospital has put this initiative into practice.

Frozen potatoes and peas, sugary drinks, canned peaches in syrup and boxes of gelatin seem to be ending in a growing number of hospitals in the United States. To establish a healthy example and the desire to make hospital food more nutritious and appetizing is an idea that has conquered the thinking of some and is awakening the consciences of others.

This is how some have taken small steps and have eliminated trans fats from their menus and switched to hormone-free dairy products. Meanwhile, others have assumed greater challenges and ventured into the organic cultivation of their own vegetables.

That the hospital has its own garden has come to be a challenge for these institutions whose main business is not agriculture. But they have done so in response to a trend to-

ward healthier eating practices.

“Numerous studies show that organic fruits and vegetables offer many advantages over conventionally grown foods, such as higher amounts of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which reduce the incidence of heart disease and some cancers, and a reduced risk of common diseases such as allergies and hyperactivity in children,” said Bonnie Coyle, MD, MS, and Director of Community Health at St. Luke’s University Health Network.

So far, 250 hospitals across the country have signed commitments, promoted by Health Care Without Harm, to serve more fresh fruits and vegetables and forgo highly processed foods. Of course, these hospitals constitute a minority among the more than 7,500 in the United States.

At the forefront in Miami is Homestead Hospital that took the challenge of preaching by example, and, three years ago, it opened its own organic garden located next to the institution. It aims to have a far-reaching impact by offering the community

fresh and nutritious food.

Situated on three acres of land, the garden has carrots, radishes, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, squash, beets, chard, watermelon, okra, mint, rosemary, basil, lemongrass, peppers, bananas, mangos, guanábanas (soursop in English), star fruit and black-eyed peas.

The garden is also used to educate the community through cooking demonstrations, health fairs, wellness workshops and support groups. As part of the hospital’s Grow Your Lunch program, more than 2,500 students have toured the garden. The idea of these school field trips is to teach them how to sow seeds, harvest fruits and vegetables, and cook their own lunch under the guidance of the garden manager.

However, all that has been achieved so far is only a portion of the plans they have with this project. According to Thi Squire, Grow2Heal Garden Manager, they hope to use the remaining 10 acres to grow products not only for Homestead Hospital but also for all other hospitals within the Baptist Health system.

En conversación con Go! Latinos Magazine, Emilio nos contó sobre su show, su país y su carrera como comediante.

urante 26 años, Emilio Lovera, también conocido como El hombre de las Mil Caras, estuvo presente en el mundo del entretenimiento de los venezolanos convirtiéndose en el estandarte de la comedia con programas como “Radio Rochela” -que lo lanzó al estrellato-, Humor a Primera Vista y Las Mil Caras de Emilio Lovera, haciendo honor a su sobrenombre.

Después de su exitoso paso por la televisión venezolana en los 80’s y 90’s, se dio a conocer -especialmente entre los más jóvenes- por sus shows de comedia en vivo tipo stand-up y por realizar todas las voces de la exitosa serie animada Isla Presidencial, donde se relataban las vivencias de los presidentes hispanoamericanos mientras estaban perdidos en una isla.

“El éxito de esta serie se debe a la novedad que representaba, pues tiene actualidad y una alta dosis de sátira y humor político. Probablemente sea el ensayo más exitoso para una serie animada en redes sociales debido a su rápida acogida por los jóvenes”, afirma Lovera, quien a su vez expresa que con sus shows trata de llegar a la mayor cantidad de público posible, de diferentes edades, género y situación socioeconómica y cultural. Así sale de su zona de confort, prueba material y selecciona el que tenga mejor acogida.

También nos habló de Venezuela y de la crisis en su país, “la mayor responsabilidad que los comediantes venezolanos tenemos es convertir nuestro discurso en mensaje con risa, utilizar el humor como vehículo transportador de la reflexión. Esto hizo que el gobierno enfureciera, primero por ser los únicos que no entienden nuestros chistes, y segundo porque cuando los desnudamos en su ignorancia, incompetencia y descaro, el público ríe de buena gana”.

Aunque el gobierno venezolano ha perseguido constantemente a la industria del entretenimiento, en este caso a

través del órgano recaudador de impuestos clausurando a última hora los locales donde se presentan espectáculos en vivo, Emilio sigue trabajando en Venezuela y por Venezuela. “Los shows que produce mi compañía siguen ofreciendo los tickets más económicos y continuamos inventando nuevos espectáculos como Histeria de Venezuela (una ojeada realista a la historia)”, afirmó.

Agradece a todos los venezolanos en el exterior que lo han apoyado constantemente para seguir trabajando como antes y por convertirlo en parte de su nostalgia. “A ellos les pido que, desde la seguridad personal de su exilio, sigan siendo solidarios con los que no pueden salir, con los que no quieren salir y con los que no deberíamos salir de Venezuela.

A ellos, muchas gracias”.

Su show “La Piñata Latinoamericana”, que se presentará en el Seminole Theatre de Homestead el próximo 02 de febrero, hace un recorrido por nuestra cultura latina, sus experiencias y situaciones. Para Lovera ninguna de sus presentaciones es exactamente igual a la anterior, por eso trae material de actualidad sobre la inmigración que es inédito. “Esta vez no hablo de los errores que el inmigrante en general comete, sino de los que cometen los naturales del país que uno visita cuando trata a un extranjero. Eso me parece novedoso e importante”.

Este show nos mostrará porque ser latinoamericano es una gran virtud: “somos alegres, somos inteligentes, somos solidarios”, afirma Lovera. Y rescata lo positivo de nuestras diferencias con otras culturas, “tenemos lo que a los norteamericanos les falta, que es precisamente nuestra forma feliz de vivir la vida, la espontaneidad y pasión.

Aprendemos de ellos disciplina y respeto a la ley, pero ellos sueñan con ser felices todo el tiempo” concluyó.

n February 2, the famous Venezuelan comedian Emilio Lovera will perform live in Homestead, Florida, with his show “La Piñata Latinoamericana” (“The Latin-American Piñata”). In conversation with Go! Latinos Magazine, Emilio told us about his show, his home country and his career as a comedian.

For 26 years, Emilio Lovera, also known as The Man of a Thousand Faces, was in the spotlight of Venezuela’s show business and became a comedy icon with programs such as Radio Rochela—which launched him to stardom—Humor at First Sight and The Thousand faces of Emilio Lovera, honoring his nickname.

After his successful stint on Venezuelan television in the ‘80s and ‘90s, he then became known, especially among the young, for his stand-up comedy shows and for playing all the voices of the successful animated series “Isla Presidencial” (Presidential Island), that recounted the experiences of Hispanic presidents while lost on an island.

“The success of the series is due to its innovation, its groundbreaking topic and a high dose of satire and political humor. Probably the most successful attempt for an animated series in social networks due to its rapid reception by young people,” says Lovera, who in turn says that with his shows, he tries to reach as many audiences as possible of different ages, sex, and socioeconomic and cultural background. A way of going out of his comfort zone, he tries new material and chooses the catchiest.

He also told us about Venezuela and the crisis in his home country, “The greatest responsibility that Venezuelan comedians have is to turn our speech into a message with laughter, using humor as a vehicle for reflection. This made the government angry, first because they are the only ones who do not understand our jokes, and second because

when we expose their ignorance, incompetence and shame, the public laughs willingly.”

Although the Venezuelan government has constantly persecuted the entertainment industry, in this case through the Tax Collection Body shutting the venues down at the last minute where live shows are presented, Emilio continues to work in Venezuela and for Venezuela. “The shows my company produces continue to offer the cheapest tickets in the market and we continue creating new comedy acts such as “Hysteria of Venezuela” (a realistic look at history),” he said.

He thanks all Venezuelans abroad who have supported him constantly to continue working as before, making him part of their nostalgia. “I ask them, from the safety of their exile, to remain in solidarity with those who cannot leave, with those who do not want to leave and with those like me that should not leave Venezuela. To them, thank you very much.”

His show “La Piñata Latinoamericana,” which will be live at the Seminole Theater in Homestead next February 2, takes a tour of our Latino culture, experiences and situations. For Lovera, none of his acts are exactly the same as the previous one, that’s why he now brings current material on immigration that is unprecedented. “This time I’m not talking about the mistakes that an immigrant goes through, but about the ones made by the citizens of a country when dealing with a foreigner. That seems original and important to me.”

This stand-up act will show us why being Latino is a great virtue: “We are happy, we are intelligent, we are supportive,” says Lovera. And it points out our positive differences with other cultures, “We have what the Americans lack, which is precisely our happy way of living life, our openness and passion. We learn from them discipline and respect for the law, but they dream of being happy all the time,” he concluded.

¿Hace falta extirpar la piel sana que rodea a los

lunares sospechosos?

El objetivo es realizar solo una operación, afirman los especialistas en el cáncer de piel

i a usted le extirpan un lunar sospechoso, el médico debería pensar en extirpar aproximadamente 2 milímetros (mm) de la piel sana que rodea al lunar. Al hacerlo se podría evitar la necesidad de una segunda operación, en caso de que el lunar resulte ser canceroso, según un nuevo informe.

En el estudio, los investigadores extirparon aproximadamente 150 lunares sospechosos de casi 140 hombres y mujeres. A todos se les extirpó al menos 2 mm de piel de alrededor de los bordes de los lunares. Los médicos usan el término "el margen" para referirse a ese trozo de piel sana que rodea al lunar.

"Aunque la gran mayoría de lunares en la piel que parecen sospechosos no resultan ser melanomas cancerosos, una vez se ha tomado la decisión de extirpar un molar, debería haber un margen estándar más claro", dijo el investigador principal del estudio, el Dr. David Polsky, dermatólogo y profesor de oncología dermatológica en Langone Health de la NYU, en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Polsky indicó que la mayoría de los cirujanos extirpan solo la porción más oscura de un lunar sospechoso o, cuando se extirpa todo el lunar, cortan un margen impreciso de 1 mm alrededor del

borde del lunar.

En el nuevo estudio, el 90 por ciento de los lunares fueron extirpados completamente con una sola operación. El 7 por ciento de los lunares fueron diagnosticados como melanoma, la forma más agresiva de cáncer de piel.

A lo largo de un seguimiento de unos 18 meses, ninguno de los pacientes experimentó más crecimientos sospechosos en los lugares donde se realizó la cirugía, encontró el estudio.

"Nuestro estudio muestra que el método de hacerlo todo de una vez con un margen claramente definido y ligeramente más amplio es más seguro y más efectivo a la hora de extirpar completamente los lunares sospechosos con un único procedimiento que el método actual no estandarizado", señaló Polsky en un comunicado de prensa del Langone de la NYU. Moles Need Removal?

Goal is to only perform one procedure, skin cancer specialist says

f you're having a suspicious mole removed, the doctor should consider removing about 2 millimeters of healthy skin from around the mole. Doing so could avoid the need for a second surgery if the mole turns out to be cancerous, according to a new report.

In the study, researchers removed about 150 suspicious moles from nearly 140 men and women. All of them had at least 2 millimeters (mm) of skin removed around the outside edges of the moles. Doctors call that healthy skin from around the mole "the margin."

"Although the vast majority of suspicious-looking skin moles do not turn out to be cancerous melanomas, once a decision has been made to remove a mole, there should be a clearer standard margin," said senior study investigator Dr. David Polsky. He is a dermatologist and professor of dermatologic oncology at NYU Langone Health in New York City.

Polsky noted that most surgeons remove either just the darkest portion of a suspicious mole or, when removing the entire mole, cut out an imprecise 1-mm margin around the mole's edge.

In the new study, 90 percent of the moles were completely removed with a single procedure. Seven percent of the moles were diagnosed as melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer.

Over a follow-up of about 18 months, none of the patients had any further suspicious growths at the surgery sites, the study found.

"Our study shows that a 'one and done' approach with a clearly defined, slightly larger margin is safer and more effective in completely removing suspicious moles with a single procedure than the current non-standardized approach," Polsky said in an NYU Langone news release.

As many as two-thirds of the hundreds of thousands of suspicious moles removed each year in the United States require further surgery because cancerous mole cells were missed during the first surgery, according to the researchers.

These second procedures increase the risk of infection, bleeding and scarring, and also lead to higher costs, the study authors pointed out.

The Romans were the first to change the calendar to have the new year begin on January 1. January was named for the Roman god Janus, who had dual faces.

Romans believed that Janus could not only look back into the previous year, but also look forward to the next one. So Romans made promises to Janus to do good deeds in the months to come and learn from past mistakes.

Early Christians also embraced resolutions as chances to repent and redeem themselves through positive actions. Although there are still some religious ties to resolutions, New Year's resolutions are still largely practiced today. And unlike making promises to God or pagan gods, resolutions are now most often personal promises focusing on self-improvement.

The largest percentage of resolutions made today, according to Statistics Brain, involve self-improvement or education-related goals.

Sharing one's resolutions with a third party can help people stay motivated as they pursue their goals.

Resolutions have been made for thousands of years, and millions of people still make them today.

n nuevo año marca un gran momento para aceptar el cambio. Muchas personas hacen exactamente eso al hacer resoluciones diseñadas para mejorar sus vidas en el nuevo año y los años venideros. Las resoluciones sobre la salud personal son cada año las mas populares entre los cambios que la gente espera hacer al comienzo de un nuevo año. De hecho, un vistazo a las listas anuales que citan las resoluciones más populares encontró que el comer más saludable y hacer más ejercicio se encuentran entre los primeros lugares.

Aunque dichas listas podrían no haber sido compiladas usando los métodos más científicos, no es ningún secreto que conseguir una vida más saludable y verse mejor es un objetivo que muchas personas luchan con la llegada del 1ro de enero.

Though such lists might not have been compiled using the most scientific of methods, it's no secret that getting healthier and looking better is a goal many people strive for upon the arrival of January 1.

Unfortunately, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report suggested that 80 percent of resolutions fail, oftentimes as early as February. For those who don't just want but need to get healthier, failure to live up to a resolution to exercise more can have potentially devastating consequences.

If exercising more is a goal in the year ahead, the following are a few strategies to make that happen.

• Exercise in the early morning. As the day progresses, unforeseen challenges or forgotten commitments have a way of devouring time initially earmarked for exercise. Exercise first thing in the morning before any commitments to work and family hijack the time you have committed to exercising.

• Take on less responsibility. Professionals and parents often cite commitments to work and family as the primary reasons they aren't getting enough exercise. While those are perfectly reasonable excuses to skip a workout, men and women who recognize the long-term benefits of routine exercise may be com-

pelled to take on less responsibility at work while also making an effort to divvy up responsibilities at home more equitably.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ongoing exercise can reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers. The CDC also notes that routine exercise strengthens bones and muscles while improving mood.

Taking on more responsibility at work might be great for your career, but that may prove a Pyrrhic victory if your long-term health is jeopardized. Parents can discuss with their spouse how to better share responsibilities at home so both moms and dads can get regular exercise.

• Embrace more efficient exercise routines. Rather than working a single muscle group at a time, which can be both time-consuming and boring, men and women can adapt their workout routines to focus on multi-muscle exercises.

Work with a personal trainer to make your workout as efficient as possible.

• Schedule your routine each week.

Each week is different, so while it may be ideal to establish a workout routine in which you exercise at the same time each day, that's not always going to be possible. Failing to exercise on a day you had intended to workout can compromise your motivation to workout in the future, so sit down at the beginning of each week to examine your commitments for the days ahead and schedule times to exercise in the next seven days.

This can keep you on track and help you avoid the disappointment of missing a workout because life got in the way.

Finding time to exercise is not always so easy, but even the busiest men and women can likely still include workouts in their daily routines.

os pasajeros del Homestead National Parks Trolley ahora pueden viajar en el tiempo en la época de mayor riesgo de la Guerra Fría cuando la defensa contra el ataque soviético era primordial para la seguridad de nuestra nación, y los Everglades fueron el centro para esta misión. iders on the Homestead National Parks Trolley can now travel back in time to the high stakes era of the Cold War when defense against Soviet attack was paramount to our nation’s security and the Everglades was central to this mission. Thanks to a partnership with the Florida National Parks Association, Trolley riders can access free tours of the Historic Nike Missile Site at Everglades National Park every Saturday through the end of April 2018.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley departs to Everglades National Park from Losner Park (104 N. Krome Ave.) in Historic Downtown Homestead every weekend through April 29, 2018. Riders will get a free ride, free guided tour, and free admission to the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center and the Royal Palm Visitor Center at Anhinga Trail. Free tours to the Historic Nike Missile Site depart from Royal Palm at

1:30PM on Saturdays. Tours at the site last approximately 90 minutes and visitors can expect to return to Royal Palm by 4:00PM. There are no restrooms or food/drink vendors at the Nike Missile Site. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own snacks, water, and bug spray.

The missile base was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, immediately following the Cuban Missile Crisis. The United States Army chose this strategic location within Everglades National Park, located 160 miles from the Cuban coast, to build an antiaircraft missile site. It remains virtually the same as it was when official use terminated in 1979.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley also provides a free ride, free guided tour, and free admission to Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center and boardwalk, where visitors can take the new Island Boat Tour.

There is an additional free stop at MiamiDade County’s Homestead Bayfront Park where visitors may swim at the atoll beach.

The trolley connects to bus routes from Miami-Dade County public transportation and there is plenty of free parking adjacent to the trolley stop. The program is the result of efforts of the National Parks Conservation Association in collaboration with the National Park Service and the City of Homestead.

The National Parks Conservation Association works to protect and enhance America’s national park system for current and future generations and is America’s voice for national parks.
