uando Julián Morales tenía 3 años, se le diagnosticó un raro trastorno genético llamado Disqueratosis Congénita, una forma de insuficiencia de la médula ósea en la que la médula no produce suficientes células sanguíneas. Esta afección generalmente se diagnostica por el bajo número de células sanguíneas circulantes en el paciente, incluidos los glóbulos rojos, los glóbulos blancos y las plaquetas.

"Aunque él está tomando medicamentos que lo mantienen estable, los médicos dicen que solo le servirá durante unos cinco años", dijo Mayra García, la madre de Julián. La verdad es que su única esperanza para una cura es un trasplante de médula ósea, que reemplace las células dañadas con células madre sanas de un donante.

García ha contado con el apoyo de Be The Match, una organización sin fines de lucro que administra el registro de médula más grande y diverso del mundo, y que durante los últimos 30 años ha encontrado donantes para las miles de personas diagnosticadas con trastornos en la sangre como leucemia, linfoma o mieloma múltiple, entre otros.

Según Be The Match, solo el 7 por ciento de los más de 19 millones de miembros del registro son hispanos. Como resultado, los pacientes hispanos que luchan contra el cáncer de sangre o los trastornos en la sangre tienen solo un 46 por ciento de probabilidades de encontrar un donante de células madre sanguíneas totalmente compatible, en comparación con un 77 por ciento de probabilidades de los blancos.

La organización ha estado educando a las personas a través de campañas de donantes.

De hecho, la Sra. García ha estado haciendo campaña con ellos para informar a las personas sobre cómo pueden salvar una vida al unirse al registro, mientras que al mismo tiempo busca un donante para su hijo.

Becoming a Bone-Marrow Donor

Seven-year-old Julian Morales has a rare genetic disease and is in need of a bone-marrow transplant. Finding a Hispanic matching donor has been a challenge.

hen Julian Morales was three years old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called dyskeratosis congenita, a form of bone-marrow failure in which the marrow does not produce enough blood cells. This condition is usually diagnosed by the low number of circulating blood cells in the patient, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

“Although he is taking medication that keeps him stable, doctors say it will work for only around five years,” said Mayra Garcia, Julian’s mother. The truth is that his only hope for a cure is a bone-marrow transplant, which replaces the damaged cells with healthy blood stem cells from a donor.

However, Julian’s search for his perfect donor has been challenging because of his Hispanic ethnicity. Julian’s donor needs to match his DNA profile, which in this case is complicated firstly because there are fewer Hispanic donors and secondly because his mother is from México and father from Nicaragua, making it harder to get an exact match.

Throughout this difficult journey, Mayra Garcia has had the support of Be The Match, a nonprofit organization that manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world and that for the last 30 years has been finding donors for thousands of people diagnosed with blood disorders like leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma, among others.

According to Be The Match, only 7 percent of the more than 19 million registry members are Hispanic. As a result, Hispanic patients fighting blood cancer or blood disorders have only a 46 percent chance of finding a fully matched blood stem-cell donor compared to a 77 percent chance for those who are of purely European descent.

The organization has been educating people through donor campaigns. In fact, Mrs. Garcia has been campaigning with them, informing people about how they can save a life

by joining the registry, while at the same time looking for a donor for her son.

She and her husband have already helped add 1,100 potential donors to the registry and even saved lives along the way—but Julian still hasn’t found his perfect match, not even his parents or little sister are a match.

The reality is that 70 percent of people who need a bone-marrow transplant do not have a match within their family.

The family also launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of the importance of becoming a potential donor. “We started Swab to Save (instagram.com/swabtosave/) to help more families like ours. We do not want others to go through what we have gone through to save our son. The campaign has worked perfectly, and people have started to register faster and more easily,” Garcia said.

Marion Carberry in Pursuit of Her Passion from Jamaica to New York to Florida

An immigrant’s story as an entrepreneur and a leader who fought for her dreams and found her life purpose in education.

M

arion Carberry, a Jamaican immigrant of Hispanic descent who moved to Queens, New York City, with her family as a teenager, started life in America living the ups and downs typical of immigrants. She got married out of high school and had a daughter, went to college as it was her life’s dream, but due to life situations, she became a college drop out.

“Years later, I was very down and depressed, and on the radio came a commercial of Audrey Cohen College [ACC], currently Metropolitan College of New York, inviting people to come in. I got on the subway and harkened to the call to my future. ACC welcomed me with open arms and ended up enrolling me in the Bachelor of Business Administration program,” remembers Marion.

It was the best decision she made in her life: she loved the personalized attention paid to students, with small classes that allowed students to progress and achieve their goals. She excelled academically and developed her entrepreneurial spirit that years later would be of enormous value in her life.

Immediately after graduating and now a mother of two, Marion enrolled in the school’s MBA program and upon graduation, ACC offered her an opportunity to teach there. She started lecturing for the bachelor program and fell in love with teaching. “Those were two amazing years that I really enjoyed until disaster came and changed everyone’s life in New York City including mine,” she sadly reminisced.

9/11 and how her life changed The 9/11 terrorist attacks changed America and many people, especially those who lived in New York City at the time. Among those people affected was Marion, who at that moment was at the top of her professional life. She was a college lecturer, corporate office manager for a highend advertising agency, columnist at several ethnic newspapers and magazines, fundraiser for Liz Holtzman’s comptroller and senate campaigns; later, community activist for her district in Queens, and was a marketing executive that secured major brand sponsorships for community organizations in the music and entertainment in-

dustries.

“After the attacks on the World Trade Center, I developed a phobia of going to Manhattan, of riding the subway, crossing the bridges; everything was chaos and the sensation of panic and fear was devastating,” said Marion. Her post-traumatic stress was strong enough to make her change her life, so she decided to leave everything behind.

Marion decided to retreat to Queens and opened a restaurant with the idea of building a Caribbean brand of restaurants and sell franchises to people who wanted to be operators. “That was my thought; however, I got trapped into operating instead of selling even one franchise,” she says.

After working 15 hours a day in a kitchen, cooking and serving food for about four years, Marion needed to get back to some semblance of her academic and professional training. It was time to leave that period of her life behind, start over and move to a new vista where she could be Marion again.

Back to her territory: Education As the leader she is, she turned a crisis into an opportunity and went back to what she knew and was good at: moved to Florida and found a way back to education, where she belonged. She was hired as adjunct faculty, and later dean, for a large vocational school. In a few years, she also became a director of student affairs at several local colleges and universities, an Associate Director of Student Professional Development at Caribbean School of Medicine—all while working as an online professor at the largest U.S. online university. It was during this time that Marion started her second master’s degree in higher education administration.

PiBerry Institute As dynamic as such a life appears, Marion’s purpose in life was not yet achieved; thus, she decided to link her entrepreneurial spirit with her passion for education, teamed up with an irreplaceable like-minded colleague and opened Piberry Institute, a vocational school where students could get the training needed to quickly enter the workforce upon graduation.

Marion smiles as she ponders and reveals, “The duality of Audrey Cohen College, God’s destiny for my life, and my past experiences perfectly prepared me for the new endeavor giving me the opportunity to find myself and reach my full potential. I wanted to start a school such as ACC—for women, migrants, and the underserved—part of our inspiration to start PiBerry Institute.”

PiBerry Institute launched in 2010, and although it was one of the toughest endeavors she had ever undertaken, a strong partnership and family support enabled Marion to overcome one challenge after the next with bringing PBI to where it is today. To ensure an ability of fiscal responsibility, Marion even pursued a third master’s degree in accounting and financial management during that time.

Piberry Institute (PBI) offers technical degrees in the healthcare industry as the medical field has a strong job outlook, is hands-on oriented and is where students can get their training quickly. For instance, programs like Medical Assisting, Practical Nursing, Medical Billing and Coding, and Home Health Aid allow students to get their diplomas in as little as three weeks to fifteen months and pursue certifications in Phlebotomy, Electrocardiography or Certified Medical Assistant, thus increasing their competitiveness for qualified jobs in the industry.

PiBerry Institute has achieved important goals in its lifetime; it became licensed by the Commission for Independent Education, is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, approved by the Florida Department of Health Board of Nursing, participates in the Student Exchange and Visitor program, and is approved by the U.S. Department of Education, as well as for veterans training. In two years, she and her partner plan to launch other programs in the medical and business fields.

“At this point of life, our intention is not only about money; it is about the opportunity we are providing for our brave and courageous students, who like me, are probably the first generation in their families to attend college. They can make a living for themselves and their families while feeling good about their achievements because they are gainfully employed, helping others as so many selfless healthcare providers do,” Marion proudly said.

Marion wants to make sure she keeps touching students’ lives.

Her purpose remains the same: to always be able to look students in their eyes, to mentor and to lead by example that everything is possible. Marion and her staff are committed to knowing what students’ needs are and helping them to believe in themselves to achieve their goals.

Para garantizar una capacidad de responsabilidad fiscal, Marion incluso realizó una tercera maestría en administración contable y financiera durante este tiempo.

El Instituto PiBerry (PBI) ofrece títulos técnicos en la industria de la salud, ya que el campo de la medicina tiene una perspectiva laboral sólida, está orientado a la práctica y donde los estudiantes pueden obtener su capacitación en poco tiempo. Por ejemplo, programas como Asistente Médico, Enfermería, Facturación y Codificación Médicas y Asistencia de Salud en el Hogar permiten que los estudiantes obtengan su diploma en tan sólo tres semanas hasta un plazo máximo de 15 meses; y, además, pueden obtener la certificación en flebotomía, electrocardiografía o asistente médico certificado, aumentando así su competitividad para los empleos calificados en la industria.

El Instituto PiBerry ha logrado importantes objetivos en su existencia; obtuvo la licencia de la Comisión de Educación Independiente, está acreditado por el Consejo de Educación Ocupacional, aprobado por el Consejo de Enfermería del Departamento de Salud de Florida, participa en el programa de intercambio de estudiantes y visitantes, y está aprobado para la Capacitación de Veteranos, así como también por el Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos. En un plazo de dos años, planean lanzar otros programas en el campo de la medicina y los negocios.

“En este momento de la vida, nuestra intención no es solamente el dinero, sino la oportunidad que brindamos a nuestros valientes estudiantes, quienes, como yo, probablemente sean la primera generación en su familia en asistir a la universidad. "Son capaces de ganarse la vida para sí mismos y para sus familias mientras se sienten bien con sus logros porque tienen un empleo remunerado, ayudan a otros, como hacen muchos proveedores desinteresados de atención médica", dijo Marion con orgullo.

Marion quiere asegurarse de seguir tocando la vida de los estudiantes. Su propósito sigue siendo el mismo, tener siempre la capacidad de mirar a sus estudiantes a los ojos, guiarlos y predicar con el ejemplo que todo es posible. Marion y su personal están comprometidos a saber cuáles son las necesidades de los estudiantes y ayudarlos a creer en sí mismos para cumplir sus metas.

Monarch All Health is a family-oriented health center based in Homestead, offering mental health and medical services to all ages, but with a focus on children 0-5 years old.

r. Rina Santiago-Guia, co-founder and clinical director, makes sure patients feel at home when they visit Monarch All Health Center: “We strive every day for our patients to feel comfortable, like part of our family.

We’re not a typical place where patients come in and the staff doesn’t even know your name. You are more than a number to us,” she told Go! Latinos Magazine while describing her business.

Precisely, their value proposition lies in offering a small community like Homestead a variety of health services all inhouse. “Our different professionals can see different family members in the same place at the same time, which saves a lot of time and energy for the family,” said Dr. Santiago-Guia. “Besides, you come in and it feels like home. The idea of starting Monarch All Health occurred to Dr. Santiago when she worked with children as a clinical psychologist for more than 10 years. When performing diagnostic tests on children, the majority were referred to various specialists such as psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, etc., and found that Homestead needed a place where patients, especially children, could access these services in one place.

Thus, Monarch All Health became the first Homestead-based health center specializing in mental health and medical services where children, families, and adults of all ages come together and are treated by a unified multidisciplinary team. In addition, its focus is on children under five, in which different psychologists who specialize in all areas of mental

health and children’s physical needs ensure that they have a simple and uncomplicated process.

Their team consists of pediatric psychiatrists, pediatricians, psychologists, counselors, speech therapists, and occupational therapists; and the services they offer include diagnostic testing, individual and family therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychiatric services, and all basic pediatric services, among others.

Monarch All Health service is making a difference in Homestead, not only for the unique and qualified service they offer but

utting up strings of holiday lights and giving special gifts to family and friends are holiday traditions for many Floridians. Before you deck the halls this year, consider how your decorations may impact your energy use and your bill.

“Depending on what type of holiday lights you use, those beautiful glowing strands can use a lot more energy than you’d think, which can drive up your energy bill,” said Florida Power & Light Company Energy Expert Monica Landrini. “Purchasing LED lights may be more costly upfront, but will save you money throughout the season. LED lights use 80 to 90 percent less energy and can last 10 times as long as standard incandescent bulbs, which saves you more over time.”

Here are more tips from FPL’s energy expert on ways you can decorate smarter and safer, as well as how you can give the gift of savings this holiday season.

Decorate smarter • Set it and forget it: Use automatic timers to control how long you are running your lights or holiday inflatables each day. The fewer the hours, the less energy you’ll use.

• Use extension cords: Need to add length to your holiday lighting display? Consider using extension cords in less visible areas, so that you’re using your holiday lights where they’ll make the most visual impact.

• Include energy-free décor: You can supplement your holiday displays with wreaths, ribbons and other decorations that don’t consume energy.

• Use inflatables carefully: Although large inflatable decorations are fun and more popular than ever, they can be some of the most expensive holiday decorations. For example, if you run a large, animated snow globe around the clock throughout December, it can add nearly $15 to your energy bill.

Keep safety top of mind • Inspect lights each year: Whether you’re using old or new holiday lights, inspect them for damage. Return or discard any with cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections.

• Check the rating: Ensure that outdoor lighting and extension cords are UL-rated for exte-

rior use. Never use indoor lights outside – although using outdoor lights inside the home is fine.

• Keep them grounded: All outdoor electrical decorations should be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter. You can buy portable units for outdoor use or have them permanently installed.

Give gifts that help save money • Shop smart: A smart thermostat makes for a great holiday gift and can save you about $50 a year on your energy bill.

• Ask Alexa how to save: If you have a device with Amazon Alexa, enable the FPL skill. Then, ask Alexa for energy savings tips from FPL all year long to find new ways to save energy and money.

• Look for the ENERGY STAR® logo: If you’re shopping for larger appliances or electronics, select models that are ENERGY STARrated as they’ll use 40 percent less energy than comparable models.

Postal Inspectors are offering FIVE tips to help ensure your important packages reach their destination, and brighten the lives of friends and loved ones this holiday season.

1. Don't leave delivered mail and packages unattended. Just as you would not leave your wallets and purses on the front seat of an unlocked car overnight, mail and packages should not be left sitting in mailboxes

or on front porches for any length of time.

2. Going out of town? Hold Mail at the local Post Office®. If you plan on going out of town or know you won't be able to check your mail for a few days, 2 consider using the Request Hold Mail service on USPS.com®. Letters and packages will be held securely at the local Post Office until you pick them up or request delivery.

3. Plan ahead. Ship using Hold for Pickup.

Regresa Homestead National Parks Trolley con nuevas rutas y paradas

l galardonado servicio National Parks Trolley de Homestead regresa el sábado 29 de diciembre de 2018 con nuevas rutas y paradas, siempre ofreciendo paseos gratuitos, tour guiado gratuito, así como la entrada gratuita a ambos Parques Nacionales Everglades y Biscayne todos los fines de semana hasta el 21 de abril de 2019. El Tranvía sale desde el centro histórico de Homestead donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de restaurantes locales, visitar el Museo Histórico de Homestead o ver un espectáculo en el Teatro Seminole.

Returns with New Routes and Stop

omestead’s award-winning National Parks Trolley service returns Saturday, December 29, 2018 with new routes and stops while still offering a free ride, free guided tour, and free admission to Everglades & Biscayne National Parks every weekend through April 21, 2019. The Trolley hub is in Historic Downtown Homestead, where visitors can enjoy local restaurants, visit the free Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum, or catch a show at the Seminole Theatre.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley can be boarded at the hub located at Losner Park in Historic Downtown Homestead at 104 N. Krome Avenue or at an additional stop at the Marriott Hotels complex located on Campbell Drive just east of Exit 2 of Florida’s Turnpike. The trolley also connects to bus routes from Miami-Dade County public transportation and there is plenty of free parking adjacent to the trolley stop Downtown.

From Downtown Homestead, the National Parks Trolley will bring visitors to Everglades National Park’s Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center and the Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm.

From Royal Palm, it will adjoin to tours of the Historic Nike Missile Site. On the way back from the Everglades, the Trolley stops at iconic local fruit stand Robert Is Here, known for its selection of tropical fruits and creamy milkshakes. Trolley riders will have the chance to pre-order from the stand or browse the unique array of fresh produce.

The Trolley also travels from Downtown Homestead to Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center and boardwalk and to the atoll beach at Miami-Dade County’s Homestead Bayfront Park. At Biscayne National Park, visitors can explore this mostly aquatic park by taking the Island Boat Tour to Boca Chita Key. The National Parks Trolley is the only public transportation available to these nearby natural treasures and is one of the

first programs of its kind in the nation.

The groundbreaking program boasts a variety of prestigious awards including the National Parks Service Director’s Partnership Award and the City-County Communications and Marketing Association Savvy Award.

The Homestead National Parks Trolley is the result of coordinated efforts, spearheaded by Vice Mayor Stephen Shelley, between National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) in collaboration with National Park Service and the City of Homestead.
