Cranbrook Food Action Committee to Hold Fundraiser Celebrating Local Farmers

With eight-dollar cauliflower making headlines recently amidst increasing prices on imported food, more of us are looking for highquality alternatives and realizing the importance of a healthy, sustainable, local food supply. The Cranbrook Food Action Committee (CFAC), a non-profit community organization comprised of committed individuals, groups, and businesses that regard food security as a vital health issue for Cranbrook, are planning Farm to Fork, an evening of dinner and dancing to increase awareness of local food and beverage purchasing options and raise needed funds for upcoming initiatives.

The 1st annual Farm to Fork fundraiser will be held on September 15th at the Cranbrook Public Produce Gardens, which was created by CFAC as a source of fresh fruits and vegetables for the surrounding community. The committee is preparing for an enchanted outdoors evening where upwards of 80 guests will sit together family-style along extended tables to enjoy an inspired four-course dinner featuring locally-produced ingredients prepared by Chef Jamie Funk and Green Door. Some favorite local bands will accompany dinner followed by dancing afterwards. The event will also showcase a selection of food and beverage products from Kootenay businesses and farmers, some of whom will be on hand to present their products.

Farm to Fork will go from 6:30 - 10:30 p.m. Early Bird tickets will be available for $55 each until June 30th; regular tickets will be $65 each from July 1st through September 6th.

A Haitian Journey The Ripples of Dr. Bob Cutler

Whether it’s 40, or 95 years, we will say, “It was a blink of an eye.”

Some will spend their lifetime gathering nuts, amassing wealth, and comfortably resting in the belief that money is life’s only currency. Others will search for something deeper: a currency of compassion, action, and love. A belief that there’s something beyond our tiny world, and that the connection to each other is a connection back to our true selves.

“I can’t change the world,” Dr. Bob Cutler says, “but I can change the life of one person, and from that, there are ripples.” And since 2001, when Cutler made his first of many journeys to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, the people of Haiti have felt the ripples of Cranbrook’s “Dr. Bob”. In the last 15 years, Cutler has returned to Haiti 18 times to provide health care and relief. Along with the Haiti Cranbrook Community Team, Cutler has fundraised close to 1.5 million dollars for Haitian medical care.

In 1975, when Cutler graduated from med school, he was determined to practice third-world medicine. He signed up for a two-year CUSO posting in Papua New Guinea, dreaming of the primitive mudmen, kuru, and bird wars. Yet, when the New Guinea government absconded with project funds, Cutler settled for a life of rural medicine throughout BC. Then, one day, everything changed.

Cutler accompanied Cranbrook businessman Rick Klassen and his wife, Cathy, to Haiti, to pick up the youngest two of their six adopted Haitian children; “Dr. Bob”, as he is known in Haiti, had no idea what adventure and meaning would soon consume his life. In preparation for his first trip, Cutler gathered some rudimentary medical supplies and offered to run a free medical clinic at the twins’ orphanage. Two posters “DOCTOR AVAILABLE” were displayed on the compound wall. His first night in Haiti, Cutler stirred in his sleep, worried no one would show up. At five a.m., he investigated a clatter outside, and was dumbfounded by what he saw: a hundred Haitians lined up around the block, most having walked miles to get a place in line. After two days, Cutler ran out of medical supplies. “I was hooked,” he says, all choked up. “Some people had walked all night long.”

Cranbrook photographer and humanitarian Brian Clarkson remembers the first time Cutler returned from Haiti: “He was on the phone, crying. It meant that much to him.” Since then, Clarkson has accompanied Cutler four times and is constantly moved by the impact “Dr. Bob” has on the Haitians. “I bear witness,” Clarkson says, “to Bob’s amazing journey with these people.”

A Seeker For the next three years, Cutler visited Haiti and ran a two-week free clinic at a mountain village above PetionVille. Around-the-block lineups met Cutler each day, with children and adults in dire need of medical attention. In 2004, frustrated by the lack of resources, Cutler met with Klassen and together they formed the Haiti Cranbrook Community Team (HCCT), to fundraise for medicine and supplies. They agreed that 100% of the humanitarian-based, non-denominational funds would go directly to Haitian care. That year, the HCCT hosted a Haitian Gala at the Cranbrook Railway Museum and raised $36,000. Cutler remembers being awed by the emotional and financial support of Cranbrook and thinking, now we’ve got the resources to really make a difference.

Over the next year, Cutler and the HCCT searched for organizations to partner with. In Haiti, a country strife with government corruption, poverty and economic turmoil, this was no easy task. In 2005, they encountered 30 kids living in a deserted farmhouse, with no water, electricity, nor furniture. The broken toilet was full of feces, and children slept on metal bed frames or the floor. Two tired woman cooked rice and beans on a Coleman camp stove. Cutler, Klassen, and team members offered support, by hiring a nutritionist and moving the children to a new house. On the next trip,

one of the children brought Klassen a box, and made reference to the man who claimed to run the orphanage: “Bad man,” he said.

“Very bad man.” Klassen broke open the box, only to discover a human skull, and a bottle of blood, both used to assist the children in worshipping both the devil and the man, who dreamed of becoming a politician. The team attempted to gain custodial rights, but were denied, as under Haitian law the man’s claim to own the children would be upheld. He offered to sell them to the HCCT for $100,000.

“It’s so hard to find good Haitian partners,” Cutler says. “We had to leave those kids. It was heartbreaking. There was nothing we could do.” For the next four years, Cutler and East Kootenay volunteers worked with various Haitian organizations, yet it was difficult finding a good fit with the HCCT’s vision.

In the 2009 documentary, “Through Human Eyes” Cutler reflects on his spiritual beliefs and how they fit into partnering with Haitian Christian-based organizations: “I’m a seeker. I don’t know. I just don’t know. I’m still struggling to find out whether there’s a God and what all this means. I don’t think that has really limited my ability to work down here. True Christianity is a great way to live your life. As is true Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism.” Then, in 2011, after a gangrenous gallbladder and a near brush with death, Cutler had his question answered and developed a renewed faith in something beyond himself.

A Leatherman and a Friend for Life.

In 2010, in the wake of Haiti’s earthquake devastation, the HCCT began work in Grand Goave, one of the poorest areas in Haiti, where 90% of the buildings were destroyed. Cutler and the team formed a partnership with Haiti Arise, a Christian-based organization that, along with its ministry, provided schooling, agriculture, and health initiatives. Together, Haiti Arise and the HCCT committed to undertake a major endeavour: construct a free-standing medical centre that would offer health care to Haitians.

Six months later, they began construction on Zanmitay (Creole tradition for “friends helping friends in need”) Health Center to address

His first night in Haiti, Cutler stirred in his sleep, worried no one would show up. medical issues such as malnutrition, hygiene, sexual and reproductive health and neonatal care. As well, Zanmitay would provide a workspace for volunteer medical teams, with the eventual hope of a full-time doctor and support staff.

Now, six years since its inception, the Zanmitay Health Center operates with a fulltime doctor, two nurses, an administrator, a cadre of medical volunteers (including Cutler) and provides free medication, and testing for TB, HIV, and malaria. “The people of the East Kootenay have been incredible,” Cutler says. “Zanmitay is a direct result of their generosity.”

Clarkson recalls the story of a woman running out of a market, hugging and kissing “Dr. Bob”. A year earlier, her husband was killed in the earthquake, her house in shambles. Her husband still buried beneath rubble, a group of thieves stole what little possessions she had left, kicking her in the head and breaking her jaw before fleeing. A displaced molar prevented her from being able to chew. Months later, she arrived at Zanmitay near death. Cutler administered antibiotics and extracted her tooth with his Leatherman, the closest thing to a dental instrument. “It’s incredible,” Cutler says, “being loved by a 60-year-old woman starving to death because of something as basic as a simple dental issue.”

The Starfish Saviour Clarkson, Cutler’s long-time friend, says, “I’m going to get emotional.” He recounts a story: A monk was walking along the beach one morning with one of his disciples.

Thousands of starfish had been washed up onto the shore after a storm. Stooping down, the monk lifted a single starfish and returned it to the sea. The disciple asked why the master did this when it made so little difference to the mass of stranded starfish. As the monk lifted another single starfish he replied, “It makes a difference to this one.” And he tossed it back into the sea.

Clarkson struggles to chock back tears. “Bob looks for starfish,” he says. “He’s one of my heroes.”

When Cutler’s asked what it’s like to be adored by thousands of Haitians, he shrugs, and becomes reflective. “We’re all part of it,” he says. “We’re all tied together.” When discussing the awards he’s received—the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award and the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s Heroes and Rescue Award—he’s somewhat dismissive. “Pride’s not something to be played with. The awards are nice and certainly add to the credibility of our fundraising, but it’s not why I do it.”

Cutler speaks decisively when discussing why he contributes so much energy to the people of Haiti. “Firstly, I go for myself,” he says. “I was so disillusioned with humanity, and our choice of 60 types of chewing gum, that I’d be living in a cave if I couldn’t have done something to help people. Then, I go for the people who accompany me; everybody comes back a different person. And finally, I go to help the Haitians,” where Cutler and volunteers typically save two to three lives in the hundreds of clients they see during their visit.

time away. “There’s a huge team,” he says.

“Everybody wants to make a difference.”

“Every journey begins with a first step,” Cutler says. “ I took that step in 2001. I took a risk and since then, everything has fallen into place.” And everywhere, we feel the ripples: in the Kootenay, in Haiti, and all around Dr. Bob Cutler, like a tiny pebble dropped into this world.

16-year-old Kimberley student, Maddie Guimont, has accompanied Cutler twice to Haiti. “Bob has such a big heart,” she says.

“People pat him on the back as he walks by because of everything he has contributed.”

Watching him with the Haitian people has inspired Guimont to become a physician’s assistant, “to help the less fortunate, so that I can make a difference in the world.”

Simonne Haney, Guimont’s mom, describes how a typical day for “Dr. Bob” motivates her to do what she can: “He reaches into his pocket to provide food for a family, arranges for a year’s medication for a toddler, then calls a team meeting to see if we’ll sponsor a family who will be losing their 34-year-old father to congestive heart failure. Bob’s compassion makes me proud to be a part of the team.”

And all this, Cutler asserts, wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and genorosity from people of the East Kootenay. “They teach by doing,” he says. “They demonstrate their love through action.” Cutler credits his wife, Jill, with being the force behind the fundraisings and his lifeblood during his

Over four days the city of Cranbrook comes alive with celebrations and activities for people of all ages from all walks of life. From bouncy castles and burly lumberjacks to yoga in the park and syrup-soaked flapjacks, there is no shortage of sights to see, food to eat and places to be.

Named as one of the top five festivals in British Columbia, Sam Steele Days has earned a stellar reputation as both a family-friendly event and adult-oriented good time. More than 250 local businesses and organizations collaborate to bring a wide variety of low-cost activities highlighting Cranbrook’s rich arts scene, culinary offerings, cultural history, and love of sport.

Rotary Park is home to the central fairgrounds, which is a whirlwind of sights and sounds.

Throughout the day there is live music, performance, and a plethora of mouth-watering culinary creations offered by local restaurants and food trucks. Giant inflatables and games keep the kids entertained while parents and adults wind through the farmer’s market and browse the amazing offerings from local food growers and artisans.

Daily Sam Steele celebrations include a social community pancake breakfast or barbeque. The Sam Steele Para de attracts thousands of onlookers, who line the streets of downtown Cranbrook to take in the hilarious characters, marching bands, musicians, horses, and classic cars, many of which toss treats to wide-eyed, woundup children. Always a favourite is Cranbrook’s Sweetheart Youth Ambassadors on the awardwinning City of Cranbrook float.

Ballet barre is the latest and hottest workout craze to grip North America. It started as a grassroots movement, quickly gaining momentum with classes popping up in many major cities.

And thanks to co-owners of One Love Hot Yoga, Chelsey Dormer, Sue Inshaw and Kristi McRae, it has come to Cranbrook.

“Ballet Barre Works is an amazing amount of fun,” said Dormer. “It allows participants to develop deep core strength and improve posture. You push your muscles to exhaustion, and will quickly see and feel the difference in your body.

“The goal with our Ballet Barre Works program is to maintain the integrity of ballet, but make it accessible to everybody.

One Love Hot Yoga offers six Ballet Barre Works classes a week, and has five different instructors who have worked hard to learn the craft and get certified to teach it.

Domer, Inshaw, and McRae have felt a lot of love and support from the community since opening up One Love Hot Yoga in Cranbrook in 2013, and they are grateful for the opportunity to watch fellow yogis grow, learn, heal, and achieve their physical and mental goals through practice in their studio. They are committed to the health of the Cranbrook community, and offer a “Give Back” class on Wednesday mornings at 6:15 a.m., where the $5 cost is donated to a local charity.

And although the heart-pumping, wall-thumping Ballet Barre Works program has taken One Love Hot Yoga by storm, the studio is perhaps best known for its more grounding and peaceful yoga classes.

One Love Hot Yoga is the only yoga studio in Cranbrook to use infrared heat in its yoga classes, which creates a deeptissue warmth that is great for sore muscles, stiffness, joint pain, or chronic pain.

“About 80 per cent of our yoga classes are sequence classes, meaning the same poses are done in each class,” said McRae. “This allows you to really master the poses, focus on muscle memory and let your mind slip away. Our yoga classes are for yogis of all levels and ages; they leave you feeling strong, challenged and capable.”

Whether you are visiting or call the East Kootenays home, you have no doubt marveled at the majestic mountainous landscape here.

But explore a bit further and you will discover another natural feature of our terrain that may awaken your inner dolphin. This region also hosts a huge variety of fresh water bodies ranging from calm, picturesque lakes with serene inlets and beaches to raging rapids and jaw-dropping waterfalls. With over 20 lakes and numerous rivers within an hour’s drive of Cranbrook, it is no surprise that this area is home to many amateur and professional paddlers, wake surfers, wake boarders, water skiers, kite boarders, wind surfers, scuba divers, and water lovers of all sorts.

If a serene slow float where you can take in the abundance of wildlife and scenic mountain backdrops at your own pace sounds enticing, you may want to try flatwater kayaking, canoeing, or stand up paddling (SUP). If the scenery doesn’t take your breath away, the temperature of some of the glacier lakes surely will! Or, if you are ready to take your paddling to the next level, East Kootenay waters offer everything from slow meandering rivers to steep technical Class 5 creeks and rivers with numerous waterfalls and committing canyons that will get your heart rate soaring in no time. Regardless of which water sport you pick, you may soon get hooked and come to understand why our region is quickly becoming one of Canada’s top paddling destinations for all skill levels.

If power and speed are more your thing, you can have the best of both worlds at Moyie Lake, Lake Kookanusa, Wasa Lake, Tye Lake, and Rosen Lake where the mountains that you’ll whiz by are still just as breathtaking although they may become a blur as you enjoy the high-speed thrills of wake boarding, wake surfing, or water skiing as many locals do.

For those of you chasing the wind, you might want to check out Moyie Lake, Columbia Lake, or Lake Kookanusa where you will find plenty of local kite boarders, wind surfers, and sailors who also love that feel of the wind beneath their wings. And just in case you were wondering, Moyie is known as having the best beach of the group for launching kites.

And just when you thought your water adventures were complete, what if we were to tell you that our area also happens to be a great area for cold water fresh dives? Scuba dive beneath the surface and you may find boat wrecks, abandoned mine sites, sunken cars, glaciers, and even fresh water coral.

It’s all about the Golden Wiener. To see your name etched upon its surface means you are the fastest Dachshund in the region. It’s the grand prize for the top dog | a highly-revered trophy devoted to short-legged, long-bodied, floppy-eared pooches with giant hearts.

The Paw Shop Wiener Dog races have become a favourite event among Sam Steele Days spectators, always drawing a huge crowd and attracting more than 30 competing wiener dogs from across B.C. and Alberta.

“The whole thing is absolutely hilarious and totally silly,” said Stephanie McGregor, owner of The Paw Shop.

“We have dogs running backwards, chasing their tails, refusing to compete. And then some of the wieners are out of the gate like little lightning bolts. No fights yet, surprisingly. At least not among the dogs. The owners? That’s a different story!”

Before each race the wiener dogs gather to strut their strangely-proportioned stuff, each introduced with a personalized | and often hilarious | bio. The top three dogs from each heat move on to the semi-final races, and the winners of those go for glory in the final event, which is of course filled with drama and comedy.

“My wiener dog actually got disqualified last year for a head start,” said McGregor. “It’s a good time for everyone. This year will be the 6th annual year of The Paw Shop Wiener Dog Races. I can’t believe how it’s taken off and the amount of support we have.

“We have a great group of volunteers who help pull it off and all money raised from entry fees goes to the BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch.”

At the end of the competition, when every dog has had its day, each are rewarded with a tasty treat and toy, regardless of who takes home the Golden Wiener.

Fisher Peak Performing Artists As far as music performances go, it’s hard to beat an outdoor summer concert at Rotary Park. Picture a beautiful summer Saturday evening, sitting on a blanket with friends and family, enjoying the sounds of some of the area’s most incredible local performers.

This summer you can enjoy free concerts every Saturday night in July and August, thanks to the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society. In addition concert goers will have an opportunity to take dance instruction with professional dance instructors and coach dancers.

Local food vendors will be on-site providing delicious local fare The Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS) sprang from an amalgamation of the Dancing in the Park and Summer Sounds series in 2013 which featured free entertainment in Cranbrook’s Rotary Park.

Since then the group has provided locals with over 20 free outdoor concerts at Rotary Park every summer.

The best thing about your local butcher is that they carry everything you need for a picnic, including locally made cheeses and baked bread; as well as locally canned pickles, mustards, and chutneys too! As for location, GO Cranbrook recommends Jim Smith in the summer. Take a walk down the path, past the public beach at sunset. There are some sweet quiet spots that are perfect to put down a picnic blanket. Don’t forget to grab a bottle of wine and wine glasses!

Homemade Energy Bars 1 Part Dried Fruit 1 Part Nuts 1 Part Dried Pitted Dates Choice of topping (coconut, cocoa nibs, peanut butter powder, etc.)

Combine first three ingredients in a food processor. Pulse the ingredients for 1 minute to chop.

Process the ingredients continuously for 30 seconds, scraping down sides of processor until ingredients form a ball. Spread mixture out evenly in a pan lined with parchment. Press toppings on if desired. Wrap and chill overnight.

Easy Pulled Pork Carnitas 2 lb. boneless pork shoulder roast 1 tbsp dried oregano 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tbsp kosher salt 1 tsp black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, coarsely chopped 1 jalapeno (chopped and seeds removed) 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 oranges

Rub pork shoulder with salt, pepper, oregano, and cumin. Place in crockpot. Add onion, jalapeno, garlic. Squeeze juice of oranges over roast and add peels into the crockpot. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours. Remove roast from crockpot. When cool enough to handle, shred meat with two forks. Meanwhile, put liquids from crockpot into a pot and reduce on stove over medium heat, stirring regularly. Add back into shredded meat, once it has reached a syrupy consistency. Serve on choice of buns or tortillas!

The Bootleg Gap Golf course is a showcase for golf in the Rockies with its wide open spaces, wildlife, and crisp mountain air. It has previously received GolfWest’s Reader’s Choice Platinum award for Favourite BC Course as well as SCOREGolf’s award for Best Course in BC under $70.

The 12th hole at Bootleg Gap begins a thrilling three-hole stretch that rims the beautiful St. Mary River. This 193-yard par 3 is the course’s signature hole, however, Trevor Simkins, General Manager and Head Golf Pro, thinks players will find the 520-yard par-5 5th hole to be the most challenging. He suggests that players think twice before trying to approach this green in two strokes if the pin is located on the left side.

Instead, he suggests aiming to make three accurate shots to reach the green, which is very shallow. Low-approach shots on the left side of this green will not stay on, so aim to keep to the right side which is much deeper. Trevor’s favourite hole is the 580-yard par-5 15th, a challenging and long dogleg with a tee shot to a landing area protected by three fairway bunkers. Here, hitters can try and cut the dogleg for a chance to reach the green in two, but he cautions to be mindful. The approach shot into the green is best played from the center or right side of the fairway since it can be blocked out from the left side.

Shadow Mountain Golf Course www.shadowmountain.ca

A unique golfing experience, Shadow Mountain introduces 19 of the most breathtaking holes imaginable. Playing through local pines, traversing across rolling mountainous terrain, and finishing with arguably the four most visually stunning holes in Canada, this course, designed by the architect team of Cooke/Carleton, will leave you breathless and exhilarated at the same time. Shadow Mountain has also been named a SCOREGolf Runner-Up for Best New Golf Course in Canada.

John Swanson, Shadow Mountain’s General Manager and Director of Golf, finds the course’s 11th hole to be its most challenging, a par 4 that ranges in distance from 313 yards from the forward tees to 460 yards on the championship tees. This hole offers a fairly generous landing area initially off the tee; however, it narrows dramatically the further the tee shot travels. A significant 150-yard transition bunker along with a strategically placed bunker along the left fairway creates a very narrow and demanding tee shot. The second shot must be of higher trajectory as the green is quite elevated. Two pot bunkers guard the lower portion of the green and collect many errant golf balls. The green however is very generous in size with subtle undulations. A par on this hole is a very good score!

The Wildstone Golf Course is the first Black Knight Design

by Gary Player Design in Canada. Already the course has become a fan favourite and a “must play” for anyone golfing in the area. Wildstone was named 9th BEST Public Golf Course Value in Canada by SCOREGolf.

Wildstone’s par 4 18th hole is the standout for General Manager and Golf Pro, Chris Andrews. This finishing hole has beauty and difficulty wrapped in one. A risk/reward scenario offers a tempting option on the tee shot. Carry the right bunker and you will hit the downslope and be rewarded by the ball rolling for many yards. The percentage play is to hit an accurate tee shot between the bunkers and then use a mid to long iron into the green. The green and surrounding contours are challenging, yet will reward a good shot. If the shot doesn’t reward you, you have the impressive Fisher Peak to gaze at in the background. This is a demanding par 4, but all good golf courses end with a memorable and challenging finish.

The Cranbrook Golf Club offers challenge and enjoyment to golfers at all levels with an abundance of sunshine and an efficient layout easy to walk or ride. Having just celebrated its 100th anniversary, it is also the oldest club in Cranbrook.

Cranbrook Golf has hosted numerous national and provincial championships including the 2004 RCGA National Match Play Championship.

The hole that Paul Whittingham, CPGA Head Professional, picks as his club’s most challenging is the par 4 4th hole, 480 yards from the back tees. What makes it so difficult is that one needs to drive straight along its considerable length while avoiding the trees lining both sides. If you manage a good first drive, then you should have about 150-170 yards left to the green. Here, it’s also important to continue straight as there is a bunker on the left, where Paul advises if you are going to miss, it’s better to be left. The most important consideration with this shot is picking the right club because it’s downhill, so it can be difficult to judge the distance with the loss of elevation and easy to overshoot into the trees behind the green. If you can get on in two, the relatively flat green makes it an easy par.

When asked how best to conquer Hole #8, Head Golf Professional Max Sherwood will suggest a long accurate drive at the 150-yard marker which will avoid the fairway bunker to the left, and the trees to the right. Fisher Peak:

The Ongoing Allure of Cranbrook’s Signature Landmark W: Dave Quinn P: Sjaane Beattie

Cranbrook is defined by Fisher Peak. When we return from our travels, we know we are getting close to home when we glimpse its familiar outline on the horizon from the car or plane window. When we close our eyes at night, we still feel Fisher Peak’s presence, towering over our valley. New arrivals and visitors to Cranbrook are regaled with tales of a climb up Fisher, and if they are lucky, get to join the “club” with their own memorable journey to its summit.

Although it tops out at only 2846 meters, Fisher Peak seems far grander and epic as it looms over our valley like a benevolent lord, watching over every denizen’s existence. The sun rises behind its iconic shape, while the last of the evening alpenglow lingers on Fisher’s summit long after the valley below has descended into twilight.

Named after prospector Jack Fisher, who struck Wildhorse gold at the foot of the mountain in 1863, this skyline silhouette beckons like a siren to the deskbound masses, a familiar form that soothes the spirit like a cold drink in a Microsoft desert. Our desire to be out there, up there, is reflected in our local endeavors. Art gallery exhibitions, renovations, beer brewing, medical examinations on humans and pets, trailer rentals, workouts, historical literature, and lounging are all done in the name or image of Mount Fisher.

First summited in 1913 by A. Nichols and G. Lum, Fisher Peak’s famous summit has since been visited by the Stanley Cup (twice), countless acrophobic dogs, and by people of all ages in every season. Summiting Fisher is seen as a rite of passage for East Kootenay ‘local’ status. Some grind to the summit just once, to say they did it. Others are insatiable.

Keith Powel, author of Fisher Peak Chronicles, writes Denny Kerr did his first ascent of Mount Fisher in 1974, and made his first winter ascent in February 1977. One of Denny’s mentors was the late Kimberley climber Bob O’Brien who still holds the record for the most ascents of Mount Fisher at 136. Denny is closing in on that record with more than 130

times up and down the mountain himself. For many years Denny held the record for the fastest ascent of the 9,336 foot peak at 1 hour 18 mins. He was recently surpassed by a Wycliffe climber, Chris Lague, who has laid claim to an ascent of 1 hour and 9 minutes.

Other local legends such as Pete Libel and Kari Medig, and a handful of the Kootenay’s über-fit elite have summited Fisher in similarly remarkable time frames, which is about a quarter of the recommended one-way trip on the BC Ministry of Forests Fisher Peak Recreation Trail website. They will all tell you, however, that going up is the easy part. Anyone who has made it to the top feels for days afterwards the quad burn from the grueling, 1400-meter descent back to the trailhead. A lingering snowfield below The Saddle often allows for some fun glissading well into the summer months, which can help cool down the burning quads.

Lately, local skiers like Russ Peebles, Monte Paynter, and Mark Knutsgard have been exploring the steep couloirs on Fisher’s north face. As the days get longer in late April, a favourite challenge is to leave after work, camp in a safe spot below the face, wake up and climb in the dark to summit Fisher at first light, get a puckering ski run in, and be back at work nearly on time the following morning. One famous Frenchman has dropped his split board not once, but twice, from the steep north face of Fisher, requiring a long trudge down the slope, as well as two new split boards.
